Blood Rocks are now slightly less ridiculous to get in Bloodborne Posted: 21 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST To fortify weapons in Bloodborne, you must find increasingly rare materials. The last item in particular is a huge pain. A Blood Rock is needed to max out a weapon, but so very few exist. There's one toward the end of the game and another in The Old Hunters. Unless you're willing to mess with Chalice Dungeon grinding, that's it. New Game+ is your best bet for more. From Software has taken its sweet time in tweaking the rarity of Blood Rocks, but the day has come at last. As of update 1.09, the Insight Shop now carries the material (after you clear "a certain portion of the main game" -- seemingly Mergo's Wet Nurse). They cost 60 Insight a piece, which is admittedly a lot, but still doable for dedicated players. The store has also dropped the price of another upgrade material, Blood Stone Chunks, to 20 Insight each. This change is especially appreciated given the many cool weapons in the DLC. I only had a single Blood Rock to spare, and I used it on the Whirligig Saw (affectionately known as the "pizza cutter"). I'll be interested to try out more weapons in-depth now that I can reasonably upgrade them. The newest update (v 1.09) has been released [PlayStation via Eurogamer]

Ninja Senki DX slashes onto PS4 and Vita with giant shurikens Posted: 21 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Tribute Games, developer of Mercenary Kings and Curses 'n Chaos, is set to release Ninja Senki DX on PS4, PS Vita, and Steam in February. Ninja Senki DX is an updated version of the freeware game from 2010 created by Jonathan Lavigne, co-founder of Tribute Games. The freeware version is currently still available to download for PC, and I highly recommend checking it out! It's a fun NES-style action platformer starring a ninja who chucks an endless supply of shurikens the size of his body at his enemies. It's challenging, but the charming pixel graphics and music help to alleviate frustration. The updated version will feature multiple endings, a new challenge mode, a remixed soundtrack, unlockable secret modes, leaderboards, and achievements. It'll run you $4.99, and supports cross-buy for PS4 and PS Vita. Read more... |
Man sues Bethesda over Fallout 4 addiction Posted: 21 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST Move over, Florida Man, we're getting intentional weirdos. According to the Russian-government-owned news publication RT, a Siberian man is suing Bethesda and its Russian localization crew over his addiction to Fallout 4, which cost him his job and his wife. The 28-year-old is seeking 500,000 roubles ($7,000) for emotional distress. He did not know Fallout 4, which he noticed on an advertisement and downloaded on his PC, would "become so addictive." Over a three week period he ceased showing up for work and got fired, ignored his friends and loved ones until his wife left him, and stopped sleeping or eating regularly. Not as bad as the poor dude who got hit by a car while playing Fallout 4. "If I knew that this game could have become so addictive, I would have become a lot more wary of it. I would not have bought it, or I would have left it until I was on holiday or until the New Year holidays," the man said in a statement, Wildly, Russia is not the first to do this. In 2010 a US federal judge sided with a Hawaiian man who said was addicted to Lineage II (he had over 20,000 hours in the game). Developer NCsoft had to pay his legal fees. Over on the other side of the world, RT says the law firm is using this as a test case to "see how far we can go" regarding this issue. If you don't like it go to Russia. You won't need to buy the Twilight Princess remaster to get that sweet Wolf Link amiibo Posted: 21 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST One of the better-looking amiibo that has been revealed is the Wolf Link amiibo with Midna riding on his back. The problem is that since its announcement alongside a remaster of Twilight Princess, the amiibo has tethered to a bundled release of the game. That's no longer the case, as Wolf Link has broken free from his shackles. Nintendo recently updated its product certificate site with a listing for an independent version for Wolf Link. However, there's no indication if the individual amiibo and the one bundled with the game will release at the same time. Through 13 months of amiiboing, Nintendo hasn't yet made an exclusive bundled amiibo stay that way. Everything thus far has been timed and eventually released individually. Not surprising considering that sometime halfway through 2015, Nintendo decided it would like to sell a whole lot of these things. Wolf Link won't be the first to buck that trend. Destructoid's award for Best Wii U Game of 2015 goes to... Posted: 21 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST Simply put, Splatoon delivered. Nintendo's inventive take on the shooter genre was the best in its field this year and so much more. It's a multiplayer experience that is both competitive and joyful, one where seasoned players and newcomers alike are welcome. Hell, even the single-player campaign is a treat. You don't need to have precise aim or snappy reflexes to come out on top. I love that. There's room for different play styles and, hey, if you would rather lay down ink in relative safety than attempt to engage in firefights, that's cool. In fact, we could probably use more teammates like you. What was a great game at launch has become a truly exceptional one in the months since. New maps, weapons, and outfits help keep Splatoon feeling fresh, while limited-time Splatfest events regularly pop up to foster a sense of competition and camaraderie among players. If you haven't tried this yet, you're missing out on something special. Read more... |
Pick Me Up! Super Mario RPG being revived for Wii U Posted: 21 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST A Geno costume in Super Smash Bros. isn't the extent of Nintendo's short-term plans for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The revered and beloved Square-developed SNES game is getting a full port on the Wii U's Virtual Console. And, it's coming quicker than Croco can run off-screen. Super Mario RPG is set for a Christmas Eve release on December 24. Just three days away! There's a mighty big catch, though: It's only available in Europe. The price will be €7.99 across the pond. There's no word regarding a North American version, but its existence elsewhere opens up the possibility. For now, those left wanting will have to just be happy for their old-timey RPG-playin' brethren on the other side of the world. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't offer up a quick tip for first-time Super Mario RPG players. There's a missable frog coin the very first time you go into Mushroom Kingdom Castle. You have to jump on Toad's head as he's moving through the very first screen. When he stops briefly at the door, jump onto the ledge above the door to hit the hidden chest. Missing this one-time event almost shattered the world of ten-year-old me, and I wouldn't want you to suffer the same fate. Super Mario RPG revived on Wii U this week [Eurogamer]

Score attack! Mario, Metal Gear, Witcher, and more games better than Star Wars Posted: 21 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST There are exactly 100 professional reviews culled on the Bloodborne Metacritic page. Of that 100, 99 are "positive" and 1 is "mixed," a lowly 7/10, which I'd suggest is still positive. Oh, so nobody dislikes this game? When I started writing this article early this year it was called, "Everybody loves Bloodborne?" because apparently an ill-fitting, not-actually-a-joke Everybody Loves Raymond joke is more important to me than clarity of thought, but the point is: I was confused, amused, and likely boozed. But seriously, no one doesn't like Bloodborne? Read more... |
Nathan Drake's whole world crashing down around him Posted: 21 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST With his feet in the air and his head on the ground, Nathan Drake is again in a predicament. He'll probably find a way out of it, that coy koi. Still, his world's coming crashing down around him, kind of like Meek Mill's when that other Drake decided to drop a mixtape. January's Games with Gold are for fighters and other fighters Posted: 21 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Xbox has no delusions of ushering in a peaceful new year. Many a punch will thrown by those who subscribe to Xbox Live Gold, it's just inevitable. Well, unless you suit up as Adam Jensen and play the pacifist. January's Games with Gold have just been revealed, and they're sure to float someone's boat (or find their lost remote). Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition kicks off Xbox One's new campaign on January 1. Killer Instinct is normally free-to-play but with a revolving cast of fighters. This edition unlocks the entire season one roster. Carrying the torch the thematic violence, indie beat-'em-up Zheros joins the fray on January 16 on Xbox One. It's the game's initial release, and we don't know a lot about it. This trailer will probably paint a better picture than my words could. On the older system, Dirt Showdown and Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be available for two weeks each -- January 1 through 15 and January 16 through 31, respectively. They are conveniently playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility, so the 360 can keep propping up the leg of your horribly off-kilter coffee table. (You really need to get a new coffee table.) Start the New Year Off Right with January’s Great Games with Gold Titles [Xbox Wire]

Dying Light's Legendary Levels aim to keep you playing forever Posted: 21 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Techland is doing their damnedest to make sure they're on your radar for most improved developer. Most people weren't happy with Dead Island (fun co-op romp, though!), but their continued support of Dying Light and willingness to have fun and break the fourth wall has earned them quite a bit of goodwill. I'm excited to jump back in with The Following next February. In this new video, lead game designer Maciej Binkowski (who I interviewed at PSX, and should probably write about) details the new legendary level system. After maxing out a skill tree, you gain access to the Legend tree, where you can continue to boost your stats for an additional 250 levels. Every 25, you'll get new weapons and outfits. I can dig it. Remember, even if you don't purchase The Following, you'll have access to these new features so long as you own the base game.

World of Warcraft is getting a more Call of Duty-like PVP system Posted: 21 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST Blizzard is changing things up for World of Warcraft's PVP mode once the Legion expansion hits, and it sounds like the system is going to get closer to the Vanilla era. For starters, currencies for buying gear will be eradicated. Players will instead level up with a mechanic closer to most online shooters, unlocking rewards and "Honor Talents" (loadouts). When entering PVP your Honor Talents will unlock, and gear won't matter "all that much." Stats will be nullified after entering PVP (only providing a nominal bonus), normalizing the playing field for all players. Hell, it even has a Prestige system, where you can reset your Honor Level to 1 for rewards. It's a tried and true system that's worked for years as a carrot for players, so why not try it, I guess. All of this sounds pretty good (or at least, better than the current system) as PVP needed some shaking up, but is it too little too late? Legion isn't even set to launch until mid to late next year. Awesomenauts is still trucking with a brand new expansion, Overdrive Posted: 21 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST You really have to give it to Ronimo. They released their 2D action platformer MOBA Awesomenauts back in 2012, and as a smaller developer, they've gone through so much. They've dealt with legal issues surrounding the publishing of the game on previous generation consoles, and even created other projects while maintaining monthly support for Awesomenauts, as well as an expansion and a heap of free characters. You could say they have their hands full. And the ride isn't over yet. They've just announced their newest update, which is yet another expansion titled Overdrive -- set for release sometime next year. Among other base enhancements to the game like a new matchmaking system, the recent shared XP update (which brings it more inline with Heroes of the Storm and less like DOTA or League), and visual reworks for classic characters, there's also a ton of new content coming. Four characters are already confirmed (Professor Yoolip, Chucho Krokk, Jimmy and Amy, and Ix the Interloper), as well as that Starstorm stage that still hasn't been released yet. Three of the characters will be part of the premium package, but Ix will be free for everyone. Read more... |
Cell games: I tried to build a pacifist utopia but the internet ate me up Posted: 21 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST The internet. It's a place where cats reign, where strangers will give you DIY tips for making fucking machines [as in machines to sex; I am not being overly enthusiastic about the general idea of machines], where Silicon Valley venture capitalists will whine on Twitter that there's "nothing to do" in San Francisco and that the city lacks culture because there aren't enough fancy carpet stores. It is a public place, a nascent extension of our real world selves that we're still not quite sure socially how to handle. Otherwise ZenSephiroth89 wouldn't be telling gamenvape to kill himself over his stance on the subs-versus-dubs debate. Read more... |
Rise of the Tomb Raider just got a demo, so give it a shot Posted: 21 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST Sorta kinda (but not really) Xbox One exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider is really good. Like, just as good, if not better, than the recent Tomb Raider release. Everyone who is able to should play it, whether or not that's now, or when the timed exclusivity runs out. You can get a taste for yourself if you aren't sold yet by way of a demo though, which just arrived on Xbox Live. Just follow the link below and you're good to go. Rise of the Tomb Raider [Xbox Live]

The Star Wars Force Awakens Play Set is a good companion for the film Posted: 21 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST Disney Infinity 3.0 was a pleasant surprise, but I was infinitely more excited at the prospect of experiencing the original trilogy and the Force Awakens Play Set than the base Clone Wars-centric game. This weekend, I had the chance to play the latter. Having just seen the film as well I'll keep spoilers light -- basically, the desert planet Jakku exists, as do the two characters shown in every trailer and advertisement (Rey and Finn). Gundam Extreme Vs. coming Stateside on Vita Posted: 21 Dec 2015 02:45 AM PST After years of surviving on a thin stew of import model kits and Crunchyroll viewings of Iron Blooded Orphans, North American Gundam fans are finally getting some love. Namco Bandai is bringing Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Force (that's a heck of a title) to our western Vitas. The Vita release will include Virtual-On like 2-on-2 arena duels where mech pilots square off in teams and try to compliment each other's mechs and playstyle to get the upper hand on their enemy. There will also be a team battle mode where players take command of a small squad of Gundams and a battleship and do battle against a rival squad. The Extreme Force mode seems to be the meat of the game and focuses on a mix of original missions and recreating scenarios from the Gundam universe. Sounds good to me so long as I get to play as Norris Packard and take out some Guntanks in a custom Gouf. Read more... |
Super Nintendo Chalmers is the best thing I've seen all month Posted: 21 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST Custom consoles are one of my favorite things in the gaming world, and this one is no exception. User rori3 shared his creation with an ominous post on reddit, noting that he had "Just finished [his] White Elephant Gift." It's none other than Superintendent [Gary] Chalmers, one of the unsung heroes of The Simpsons franchise, and arch-nemesis of Seymour Skinner. I hope that if this is really a gift (and not a joke), that whoever gets it appreciates it! Just finished my White Elephant Gift [reddit] Read more... |
Here are some of the best in-game winter events running right now Posted: 21 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Mince pies, gingerbread men, last-minute panic buying of presents, and, of course, shutting yourself away from your family for the entire time to take part in some of the many in-game events happening at the moment. To save you the time and effort of having to hunt them out, here are some of the best events going down over the holidays. Read more... |
This is what Street Fighter IV looks like with motion controls Posted: 21 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST Like most people it seems, I think that the Steam Controller has potential, but it just hasn't been realized yet. It's a great time to test it out though, as one individual just tried it out on Street Fighter IV, including the motion control capabilities. ConstableBento ended up giving it a go with his expertise in tow, and was able to pull off both hadouken and shoryuken motions with it. It's a very short little clip but it gets the job done, and shows off the controller's potential to encroach and improve upon on just about every genre there is. If you want the setup, you can find it here! Motion Controlled Hadouken | Steam Controller [YouTube via Shoryuken] Read more... |
Chrono Trigger inspired Project Setsuna still looks great Posted: 21 Dec 2015 12:30 AM PST Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna (formerly known as Project Setsuna) is still happening compliments of developer Tokyo RPG Factory, and it still looks beautiful. This newest video is one of the most descriptive pieces of footage yet, showing off overworld and field gameplay, as well as combat, and a number of characters. Setsuna will launch in Japan in February, and at an undisclosed time in 2016 in the west. Yep! It's confirmed for a localization.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven is coming west Posted: 21 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST If I hear the phrase "CyberConnect 2," I'm usually in. Although they've been consigned to creating licensed anime games for years, they've also crafted a few original joints, most notably Asura's Wrath -- one of my person favorites of theirs. Thankfully, another one of their works, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, is getting localized. It's a 3D arena brawler, which hosts a large number of characters (over 50), with online play in tow. Namco Bandai announced the news this morning along with Tales of Berseria and One Piece: Burning Blood, and it couldn't be a better time to be an anime fan.

One Piece: Burning Blood slated for just about every console in the west Posted: 20 Dec 2015 11:30 PM PST One Piece: Burning Blood, announced for PS4 and Vita at Tokyo Game Show, has just been confirmed for 2016 release in North/South America and Europe, where it will be available on: PS4, Vita, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. The 5,000-piece limited "Marineford Edition" will be available at select retailers and direct via Bandai Namco. All Xbox One and PS4 pre-orders come with, "an exclusive DLC pack that includes Gear 4th Luffy as well as three other yet to be announced items." Burning Blood is the first fighting game based on the popular anime with 3-vs-3 fights. That's why the blood's boiling. It's extreme.

Tales of Berseria is coming to PS4 and PC in the west Posted: 20 Dec 2015 11:20 PM PST Bandai Namco's Tales of Berseria was announced in the middle of this year for PS3 and PS4 in Japan. That has since received a 2016 launch date in Japan. Today, the company confirmed its plan to bring the newest Tales of game to North and South America, but only for the PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam. Berseria is the first Tales of game to be solely led by a female protagonist. That's Velvet, "the embodiment of darkness," thanks to, "festering anger and hatred after a traumatic experience three years prior." She's balanced by Laphicet, a young boy, "created in the image of light."

French consumer group takes on the Steam user agreement Posted: 20 Dec 2015 09:00 PM PST Valve is being sued by a French consumer group that deems the terms and conditions of the Steam user agreement as "detrimental to consumer interests." According to redditor Silencement, consumer rights group UFC-Que Choisir states that because the Steam's user agreement prohibits the resale of digital games, it is not permissible in French law. The case also takes umbrage with Valve's refusal to assume responsibility when accounts are hacked and customer information stolen, its automatic ownership of any user-created content on Steam, and the fact you can't get anything back on your Steam Wallet even if your account is closed/banned. Valve also chooses to apply the consumer laws of Luxembourg, regardless of where the player may be in the world. This is not the first time someone's tried to take on Valve. What do you think about the case?

Prison Architect's latest update introduces women's prisons Posted: 20 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST Introversion Software has released a major new update for Prison Architect. Now you’re able to make the game all Bad Girls-y, with the introduction of women’s prisons. This isn’t just a quick aesthetic change, as women inmates may behave differently to men, and their differing needs will have to be met to avoid a riot. Some prisoners are also allowed to look after their children while inside, so will need their own specially constructed family cells and nurseries. The update also introduces new additions to the modding API, new translations, and, of course, plenty of bug fixes. You can see Introversion’s entertaining as always video detailing the update at the top, and a full changelog on its forums. And now I want to binge-watch Orange is the New Black. Again. Thanks, Introversion…

Here's over an hour of The Division gameplay Posted: 20 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST The Division isn’t getting a public beta test until early next year, but there have been some very closed, very NDA’d alpha tests running recently. Here’s some leaked gameplay footage of that alpha thanks to YouTuber Depro Fan. The videos show off character customisation, wandering around the world, and then, of course, plenty of gunfights. All in all, it seems to be a pretty comprehensive look at what the alpha has to offer. What’s interesting is that I’ve played The Division, but because the player in the videos wasn’t guided through it by a Ubisoft PR rep like I was, this is the most detailed look at the game I’ve seen so far. I’m still not convinced that it’s going to be the greatest game to have ever happened, but this footage certainly has got my hopes up that it might be good. We’ll find out for sure when the game launches on March 8.

Xbox One gets discount + $50 gift code at Microsoft Store again Posted: 20 Dec 2015 03:30 PM PST Update: $50 gift code deal is now dead :( Microsoft probably should have checked the calendar when it started up this Xbox One sale, but for those who don't care or need to have it in time for Christmas, this deal is rock solid. For a limited time, the Microsoft Store is once again offering a gift code with the purchase of any Xbox One bundles. The value is now $50 (vs. the $60 during Black Friday), and on top of that you'll get a choice of a free game from a selection of three older titles. The more popular bundles are sold out (e.g. Fallout 4 1TB bundle), but it looks like there are still plenty of stock on a handful of bundles. All Xbox One bundles below gets a $50 gift code + 1 free game:
Before you get too excited, your freebie game choice includes Microsoft's infinite supply of AC: Unity, Watch Dogs, and The Crew. No doubt Microsoft had some agreement with Ubisoft in offloading its overstock titles into sales promotions. The $50 gift code shows up in cart automatically and will be delivered to your email address by January 8 (this depends on your order date) and would be good for anything at Microsoft Store such as another controller or game. If you must have this Xbox One bundle deal in time for Christmas, you'll have to pay for expedited or express shipping at $10 and $17 respectively, or you can head over to your local Microsoft Store if one is available in your area. No expiration date are provided by Microsoft, but we'd imagine the deal will end fairly soon as Christmas nears. Will we see the Xbox One hold at the $299 price tag after New Years? Our magic 8-ball says "Sure, why the hell not." Game deals from Dealzon. Sales help support Destructoid.
