Monolith organizes medical fundraiser for producer Posted: 20 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST Back in May, Monolith Productions executive producer Michael Forgey was diagnosed with a "highly aggressive" form of glioblastoma (brain cancer). His friends at Monolith are doing the best they can to ease the burden of this terrible news with a fundraiser, in the hopes of lessening Forgey's medical bills and providing security for his family. Andy Salisbury, community manager for Monolith, detailed the aims of the fundraiser yesterday in a Reddit post. "This Tuesday we urge you to play Shadow of Mordor, stream your gameplay if you can, and spread the word using the #ForForgey hashtag." Of course, the hashtag is ultimately in service of the group's fundraising effort. At press time, the #ForForgey YouCaring page has pulled in over $100,000 -- a third of its ultimate goal. Funds raised through YouCaring are received in real time, according to the site's FAQ page, so the money you donate is all but guaranteed to reach its mark. We wish Monolith luck with the fundraiser, and hope for a speedy recovery for Forgey.

The HTC Vive has been improved, details at CES Posted: 20 Dec 2015 01:00 PM PST Recently, Engadget published a report from an HTC Vive-centric developer forum in China that claims HTC has made a "very big technological breakthrough" on its Steam VR-powered virtual reality headset. Originally, the headset was set for a limited December release, but the launch was pushed to April 2016 so consumers wouldn't have to replace their initial unit with the superior iteration, according to HTC CEO Cher Wang. "We shouldn't make our users swap their systems later just so we could meet the December shipping date," Wang said. It's like HTC is Apple's evil good twin! HTC will be detailing the breakthrough's specifics at next month's Consumer Electronics Show, a one-time mandatory destination for video game news. CES 2001 was the place where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed the original Xbox to the public, after all. It was also the place where Nintendo performed a heel turn on Sony, breaking its 'Nintendo PlayStation' partnership in front of a crowd. It's also possible HTC will reveal the Vive's price at CES. Engadget writer Richard Lai pressed Wang for hints about the MSRP, but she responded with an anecdote that also served as an extremely round figure. Essentially, if you make around $1,700 USD per month, there's an 80% chance you'll find the Vive affordable. That's a crazy response, right? This could indicate that HTC isn't totally confident in Vive's pricing. If it was affordable, the company would be actively banging that drum. Or, this could also be a PS4/Xbox One situation, where competitors wait for someone to flinch on price before they start looking for ways to undercut on the base model. God Eater Resurection may be coming west Posted: 20 Dec 2015 12:20 PM PST God Eater Resurrection, a remake of Bandai Namco's take on the Monster Hunter formula, looks like it's coming west, or so suggests a European trademark filing made December 18. In January of this year, the publisher also filed a mark for Rage Burst, the subtitle for God Eater 2's expansion, though the publisher has not made any official comment about localizing either title. Bandai Namco has, however, launched a countdown website, which is teasing an announcement for tomorrow morning, Monday at 8am Eastern time. So I suppose we may know more soon. God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2: Rage Burst are both designed for PlayStation 4 and Vita, and have been available in Japan since this October and February 2014, respectively. The only entry in the series to see a western release to this point is an enhanced version of the original God Eater, titled Gods Eater Burst, which was released in March 2011 for the PSP. All the character themes in SFV Posted: 20 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST One of my favorite parts of the Street Fighter series has always been the music. Select themes from the games have made it on everything from (poorly recorded) mixed cassettes when I was a kid to my favorite driving playlists right now. I haven't been keeping up with the SFV beta so I wasn't sure how the audio in this installment was shaping up. Turns out it's in good hands. You can listen to the extended themes for every character in this YouTube mix. I'm partial to Laura's swanky brass section and Vega's remixed matador anthem (but of course I would be). While you're at it, go listen to the soundtrack for SFIII again, it's amazing.

The Haters Guide to GOTY Season Posted: 20 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST Destructoid’s Game of the Year awards are upon us. It’s a time to celebrate another year of excellent video games, share what surprised us, and evangelize the forgotten gems and stealth hits that may have gone unnoticed. It’s also time to shit on everyone else’s favorites. Let’s face it, half the fun of GOTY lists are explaining why they are deeply, deeply wrong to every other simpleton in the comments section. 'Tis the season to dump on your fellow man’s bad taste, to perform your public duty to explain to someone why their favorite game of the year is something only a moronic ape (nothing personal) would love. But with so many games released this year -- and with so many of them being frustratingly good -- it can be hard to come up with convincing arguments for why they all secretly suck. Don’t worry, though. I’ve got you covered. With this haters guide, you’ll never be caught short without a snarky word or bad faith insult to fling when someone has the nerve to saunter up and tell you, with a straight face, that Tales from the Borderlands was the best game of 2015. The art of pacifist game design with Fullbright and Frictional Posted: 20 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST [Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.] Did you know that the protoype for the snoop-to-win exploration adventure Gone Home was built in the same engine Amnesia, one of the games credited for bring the Survival Horror genre back from the brink of obscurity? That's just one of the many parallels that popped up between the design sensibilities of Thomas Grip of Frictional Games and Steve Gaynor of Fullbright during their respective Sup Holmes episodes. It wasn't surprising to hear that Thomas was heavily inspired by other Horror titles in creating Penumbra, Amnesia, and Soma, but I didn't expect to hear from Steve that the opening area of the original Resident Evil was one of the inspirations for Gone Home. From the sounds of it, Fullbright's upcoming title Tacoma may venture even further into intentionally taught territory. We also got a little hint of what Thomas's next title at Frictional may be, but he wasn't ready to spill the beans quite yet. Regardless of beans, it's undeniable that these two developers have done something that many didn't think was possible. If games were pop music, then physical conflict would play the role of the lead singer. These managed to create highly engaging, successful radio hits using only drums, bass and keyboards. That's no small feat. We were lucky to have them on the show, and greatly look forward to what they may do next. Read more... |

That's a good Minnesota Master Chief Posted: 20 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Master Chief traded his signature green for some purple pride at the Minnesota Vikings game this afternoon. There's always the off-chance that this isn't the fabled Spartan and it's actually an innovative midwesterner who's found the warmest way of dealing with the frigid Minneapolis winters. Whoever's in that armor, they think a football game to be more worth their time than the Halo 5 World Championship qualifiers that are being streamed live right now. @best_nfl [Twitter] Read more... |
Stars, wars, and lasers with Alex and Mike of Totally Choice Posted: 20 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST [Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.] The Bit.Trip series has gone on to become one of the higher profile indie success stories in recent years, but there was a time when Bit.Trip co-creator Alex Neuse was on a very different path, toiling away at LucasArts on a project that would never come to life. Maybe it's not a coincidence that this former employee of George Lucas would go on to make so many games about space. Nearly every game that Alex that Alex's independent game studio Choice Provisions (formerly Gaijin Games) days would be related to space in one form or another. The previously mentioned Bit.Trip series, the recently released Laserlife, the upcoming astronaut cannibal adventure Tharsis, and the light-hearted romp Space Dave! are just a few examples of the cosmic-themed adventures that Alex and Choice Provisions have created in the intervening years. Today on Sup Holmes we'll be talking to Choice Provisions co-founders Mike Roush and Alex Neuse about where they've been, where they are going, how it's felt to grow from their humble WiiWare exclusive days into a publisher who works on nearly every platform, simultaneously generating original games while promoting games from other developers like DriveDriveDrive!, Shutshimi, and a lot more. Join us live at 2:30pm for the whole ding dong.

Destructoid's award for Best 3DS Game of 2015 goes to... Posted: 20 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST The 3DS had a rough launch, but over the course of a few years, it bounced back in a big way. At this point if you count digital releases, it's one of my favorite platforms of all time -- and I'm not just talking about the portable arena. Slowly but surely many franchises have found their home on the 3DS, including the once Sony-led Monster Hunter. This year may have been a light lineup in some gamers' eyes, but it still had a handful of great Game of the Year contenders and our 2015 winner, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, epitomizes how far the 3DS has come on a both a technical and fundamental level. Despite the fact that it called Sony home for nearly a decade, the series has transitioned well into Nintendo's safekeeping. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate caught me in a way that the last iteration never could, with a large number of gameplay adjustments and engaging environments. Capcom also managed to support the game for months on end with free DLC updates, including a ton of classic homages and Nintendo tie-ins. This train isn't stopping anytime soon for both publishers either, as Monster Hunter X has smashed records yet again this year in Japan on 3DS. Read more... |
New Super Mario Maker costume leaked Posted: 20 Dec 2015 03:45 AM PST Looks like those dang dataminers are up to their old tricks again. According to this video by the YouTube channel GameXplain, they've plied their wicked ways on Super Mario Maker and dug up an as of yet unannounced costume from the game's metaphorical sub-levels. It's the Skypop plane from Super Mario Land on the Game Boy! This cute little black and white throwback includes its own custom sound effects for dying and clearing a stage and looks downright adorable. It's great to see Nintendo continuing to throw support behind Super Mario Maker. I think it's one of the most interesting and joyful games to come out in the past few years. I sometimes wonder if the Wii U had launched with a copy of it in the box if things might have worked out a little differently for the struggling system.

Batman: Arkham Knight's last DLC out this week Posted: 20 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST The last of the Arkham Knight DLC will be arriving on Dec 22, just in time to land in the stocking of all the naughty children of Gotham. The new pack includes the expected alternate looks for Batman and his whip (this time featuring the 2008 Christian Bale batsuit and the Batmobile from the original Arkham Asylum), a four-pack of returning villains to fight, and some new areas to explore, including an expanded wing of the GCPD (yawn).
