Escher-esque puzzle game Monument Valley is currently free on iOS Posted: 02 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Monument Valley, the peaceful isometric puzzle game with a visual style reminiscent of Fez, is currently available for free on iOS devices, dropping its previous $4 price tag. It features optical illusion puzzles with clear M.C. Escher influences and a really great soundtrack. I haven't had a chance to play Monument Valley yet myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about it, aside from its short length. But it's hard to complain about the length now that the game is free!
The tragic backstory of Yo-Kai Watch's Jibanyan is based on a real-life incident Posted: 02 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST Jibanyan, one of Yo-Kai Watch's most popular mascots, has quite a sad tale to tell when players meet him in the game. He was once the loving companion of his owner, a girl named Amy, before he got run over by a truck and turned into a Yo-Kai. From then on, he spent his time in the afterlife trying to get revenge on passing cars at the intersection where he was killed. The cars always win. In a recent interview, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino revealed that Jibanyan's tragic origins were actually based on a personal experience of his. On his way home one day, he found an abandoned kitten on the side of the road and almost took it home with him. "I passed it by at first, thinking that I probably couldn't keep a cat at home, but it was just so cute, I thought to myself 'I gotta do this!' So I came back a few minutes later, but by that time, it had already been hit by a car." This really brings a whole new level of sadness to the Jibanyan character, but at the same time I think it's awesome that the poor kitty has been immortalized in a video game. You rule, Jibanyan!
Posted: 02 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST It's finally December! The finale of the year when people begin thinking of snow, goodwill towards men, and of course delicious presents. I remember looking forward to presents so much as a little kid. As an adult, I could just buy what I want without having to wait. Now I may have come full circle, looking forward to presents again since I'm dangerously poor, but I also have Netflix. So aside from outgrowing the sensation of receiving video game gifts, I look forward to receiving unique gifts reflective of my friends and of course, giving gifts to friends.
Destiny's raid challenges are lame so far, but at least they guarantee loot Posted: 02 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST This week, Destiny's raid challenges debuted for both normal and hard mode variants. The gist is that each week, a new boss will have an active modifier that's designed to test player's skill, and reward them with specific bonuses if they meet said requirements. In this case, the challenge involves the Warpriest, the third encounter and first major boss of the King's Fall raid. Except so far, this isn't really quite a "challenge." In essence, players will find that enemies will spawn faster, and the boss has a slightly faster firerate. Other than that, you only need to complete the fight with no one player holding the aura (that allows you to damage him) twice. That's it. Most groups will down him in two sequences (mine does it close to one at this point), so there's very little effort needed to actually accomplish this if you're already doing the fight on hard. So what's your reward? 310 gear on normal, and 320 gear on hard (weapon, artifact), thank goodness. But in the end, this only slightly delays the grind, because the rest of the raid each week is still gated behind multiple counts of RNG. Instead, I wish there was a token system like many MMOs out there, where running the raid will net you a piece of currency -- after accumulating a certain amount, players can then turn them in for a missing piece, most notably the mysterious hard mode helmet that's nigh impossible to get. Raid challenges and guaranteed 320 gear is a step in the right direction, but it's a half-measure. Hopefully Bungie can go further to help retain players going forward, as I don't see this lasting more than a month or so as each challenge cycles through to Oryx.
Shaq promises a Shaq Fu related 'surprise' during The Game Awards Posted: 02 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST Ever since I was little, I adored watching Shaq play. Whether it was on the Magic, Lakers, or any of the other teams, he was the sole reason I got into basketball and started playing it growing up. I even liked Shaq Fu, despite its many, many flaws. That's why I'm so excited to see that the new Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn project actually happening, In fact, Shaq actually promised a "surprise," as he will be in attendance for The Game Awards. Will it be a full reveal with footage, or just a logo with a projected date? Who knows, but either way, I'm interested in seeing if it will be good. Shaq [Twitter]
The Uncharted 4 beta has been moved up by a day Posted: 02 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST Although we got word earlier today that the Uncharted 4 beta would take up 7GB of space, it seems as if the dates have been altered ever so slightly. Instead of starting up on Friday, the beta will now kick off tomorrow, December 3, at 9AM PT. All you need is a copy of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and the aforementioned storage capacity, and you're good to go. The beta will run until December 13. I think I'll partake in it, but I'm not expecting a whole lot - I was never crazy about Uncharted's multiplayer component. PlayStation Europe [Twitter]
The final issue of Archie's Mega Man comic is delayed again Posted: 02 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST It's a sad time for the Archie Mega Man comic. Despite the fact that it was highly acclaimed in the eyes of many critics and fans, it's coming to an end after just 55 issues. In even sadder news, said issue isn't actually out yet on its official due date of December 2. This is after a delay from mid-November. Some fans are worried that it may not be coming at all. After checking with Archie's Twitter account, it seems as if news will be coming soon in regards to the new date. Hopefully we'll all get some closer. Archie Comics [Twitter]
Star Wars Battlefront's Battle of Jakku DLC is just okay Posted: 02 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST Oh thank goodness, more content for Star Wars Battlefront. While The Battle of Jakku hasn't seen a wide release yet (that's happening on December 8), the free new DLC is now available for folks who pre-ordered the game. It's two new maps and a mode set on the war-torn planet of Jakku, which will also appear in The Force Awakens (albeit many years later, hence that decrepit Star Destroyer from the movie trailer).
Atlus' Deadly Tower of Monsters will arrive in January Posted: 02 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST We haven't heard a lot out of Atlus' (and Ace Team's) camp in regards to Deadly Tower of Monsters, but a whole lot of info just rolled out today. For one, just look at and bask in the glory of that screenshot above. Also, the fact that the main character is called "Dick Starspeed." In short, you'll aid Dick as he fights his way across the planet of Gravoria, battling dinosaurs and giant ants along the way. It's basically one giant homage to old school sci-fi and creature films. It'll drop on January 19 on PC and PS4.
A documentary style quest to obtain every NES game is now streaming on Amazon Prime Posted: 02 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST Previously available on-demand, Nintendo Quest is now streaming for all Amazon Prime members. In essence, it's a quest taken on by two people to obtain all 678 officially licensed games in 30 days. Along the way they'll encounter special guests and the like, and chat a bit about the history of Nintendo. My favorite part about the trailer is the sheer number of retro game stores the duo finds. Hell, one retailer at the end has a "Nintendo Rehabilitation Clinic" shirt on. In my area, there's only one location that sells old games.
Severed might be one of the last great PS Vita games Posted: 02 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST It's rare we get to talk about an upcoming PlayStation Vita game, much less one that is exclusive to the handheld and looks genuinely interesting. The next title from Guacamelee! developer DrinkBox is Severed, a first-person dungeon-crawler centered on strategic dismemberment. You'll engage strange creatures primarily with the touchscreen, rather than use buttons. This input method "allowed [DrinkBox] to make the game a much more deep and complex experience than button-based sword fighting ever could have been," according to CEO Graham Smith. You can't just blindly swipe at limbs. Different foes have different weaknesses to exploit. And that art! These aren't your typical dusty dungeons.
Yacht Club Games would love to have Tingle DLC for Shovel Knight Posted: 02 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST The Shovel Knight amiibo is still mysteriously a giant question mark in the US, despite the fact that some people in Europe are getting their hands on the toy this week. Speaking to Gaming Boulevard, developer Yacht Club Games had a few interesting things to say, most notably regarding the amiibo functionality and its dream DLC. As it pertains to the amiibo, co-op isn't the only thing coming -- "New relics, equipment, the ability to customize Shovel Knight’s look, new challenge stages, and on Wii U, two player co-op! We plan to continue support of the Shovel Knight amiibo in future Yacht Club Games and Nintendo products!" Additionally, when asked about adding Tingle, they responded, "We don’t have any plans for more Nintendo specific DLC content. But we’d always love to do something with Tingle. He’s the best!" As much as this prospect sounds amazing, I talked to Yacht Club Games earlier this year, and the studio noted that Nintendo wasn't responsive to adding in one of its properties to the game, like Sony and Microsoft did for Kratos and the Battletoads, respectively. I think the amiibo was a compromise of sorts. Let’s talk with: Yacht Club Games – part 2 [Gaming Boulevard]
One month later, the Alienware Steam Machine is still a nice accompaniment to the PC Posted: 02 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Back in October, I had the chance to test out the new Alienware Steam Machine's mid-range model (i3 Dual Core, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD), and was fairly pleased with the results. As the hardware manufacturer even noted before launch, it's not exactly a replacement for a real gaming PC, but an add-on. It's a rather expensive piece of kit that could otherwise be invested back into a PC upgrade for sure, but my hardware is still kicking in spite of that fact.
Majestic! Bloodborne is online again Posted: 02 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Earlier this week, From Software took Bloodborne offline for "emergency maintenance on the game servers," presumably to address an exploit that led to players gaining access to content from The Old Hunters DLC without paying for it. The servers are back up now, thankfully. Let the bells ring! The studio hasn't said much about the situation other than to note that "in regards to the issues like NPC survivor state not [being] handed over properly which occurred in the previous update, we have provided a latest update (1.08) where such issues have been fixed." And with that, I can get back to helping people on some of these Old Hunters bosses to feel good about myself again. Laurence has destroyed my confidence. Notice for the completion of server maintenance and update delivery [PlayStation]
Fast Racing Neo, that awesome looking Wii U racer, finally has a release date Posted: 02 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST Fast Racing Neo has been on my radar for quite some time now, and finally, it's almost upon us. It's set for December 10, and will go for $14.99 -- given what seems to be on offer here, it seems like a fair enough price. My anticipation jumped up significantly after hearing that the F-Zero GX announcer was going to be a part of the project, so I'm hopeful for this one. Shin'en Multimedia [Twitter]
Nintendo of America apparently limits 3DS games to four themes Posted: 02 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST Well, this is an interesting little factoid. While chatting on Twitter about upcoming 3DS themes for The Legend of Dark Witch, Circle Entertainment noted that nine of them will be coming to Europe, and four to North America. When asked about the disparity, Circle replied that Nintendo of America only allow games to have four themes as a maximum. It's such a weird arbitrary thing, like the demo play limits on 3DS, but I find little things like this to be fascinating. I love to hear how all of the different branches of Nintendo operate worldwide. Circle Entertainment [Twitter]
Lost Reavers has officially launched in Japan Posted: 02 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST Although it still hasn't been confirmed for localization, Bandai Namco's Lost Reavers is now out in Japan. The game is a free-to-play title that features a dungeon crawling-esque setup, with a heavy emphasis on teamwork and action. While I'm not exactly chomping at the bit for this, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Hara's involvement has my interest. Plus, the launch trailer (above) looks fun enough. Hopefully the free elements are inoffensive.
| Final Fantasy XV is now playable from 'start to finish' Posted: 02 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST It's kind of absurd to be getting up-to-the-minute updates on the development of a game, I know, but this is Final Fantasy XV -- a game that was announced in 2006, and had rumors of cancellation for years on end. According to developer Kitade Satoshi on the official forums, it is playable from start to finish, and that the first half of the game is basically done. At this point, the devs can now start assessing the overall package, and make adjustments as needed, as they've done with the demo version. Everything is coming together, but more of that signature Square Enix fanfare is still on the way -- the game isn't even getting a release date until a special announcement event in March 2016. | Yo-Kai Watch has shipped 10 million games worldwide Posted: 02 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST Oh my swirls! The Yo-Kai Watch series is a phenomenon in Japan, and it looks like it's still doing quite well. Level-5 is reporting that it has shipped 10 million units to date, which is an increase from March, when it topped seven million. The launch of two Ghostbusters-themed spinoffs definitely added to this number, as did the undisclosed sales of the western localization of the first game. Good on Level-5, but I really, really hope that the series catches on in the west. We still don't have concrete sales numbers yet, and Nintendo of America usually toots its own horn when it comes to that. Yo-Kai Watch [Gamer.ne.jp via Gematsu] |
Amplitude set to release on January 5 for PS4 Posted: 02 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST It has been a bit of a wait for Amplitude, Harmonix's 2014 Kickstarter success. It was originally slated for release in March of 2015, but was pushed back a few times to January of 2016. Still, a year is nothing if you consider the last game in the Frequency/Amplitude series came out in 2003. In a backer update, Harmonix announced the official release date of January 5 on PlayStation 4 for $20. Backers who pledged $40 or higher during the Kickstarter campaign will get early access on December 23. The update is specific about PlayStation 4; no word is given on the PlayStation 3 release. Along with the release information, Harmonix included a launch trailer and the final track list (below the video).
Review: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege Posted: 02 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST The original Rainbow Six was one of the first squad shooters I ever played, outside of the Delta Force series (both debuted in the same year). I still remember hanging out at my friend's house with his dad, who also played, and all the tense moments that came about. Before that, I had been blowing things to bits in Catacomb and Doom without thinking, and it changed my perspective on shooters as a whole. Rainbow Six Siege isn't nearly as innovative, but it's a really good excuse to blow things to bits and think tactically at the same time.
Rocket League has evidently been rated for Xbox One Posted: 02 Dec 2015 01:30 AM PST Good news, everyone -- if you've been wanting to get in on the Rocket League craze and don't want to play it on PC or PS4, you may have your chance yet on Xbox One at some point. The Taiwanese Game Software Rating Regulations Board has just rated it for Xbox One. Since the developers have been giving away this game like candy (free with PlayStation Plus, or free on PC if you bought a Steam Controller), it's safe to say that it will probably hit Games With Gold at some point. There's so much DLC that they're probably still making plenty of cash even if it went free-to-play at this point. Rocket League [Gamerating.org via lifelower]
Lab Zero's Indivisible hits funding goal Posted: 02 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST Indivisible, an action RPG from the minds behind Skullgirls, was just funded through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. The drive hit its $1.5 million goal after receiving a 20-day extension from Indiegogo administrators with a mere three days to go. Eight percent of the $1.5 million ($120,000) has been allotted for taxes and fees, with the rest ($1.38 million) going towards development. Lab Zero took to Twitter in celebration moments after the campaign hit its goal. According to Indivisible's campaign page, the funds raised are not just for development costs -- they're also a method of proving interest for publisher 505 games. "505 Games has generously agreed to contribute a further $2 million toward its development only if we reach that goal. So for us here at Lab Zero, your contribution counts for more than double!" Lab Zero has been announcing indie crossovers over the course of the drive, with Red from Transistor announced as the final guest character.
Posted: 02 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST Dementium was originally pitched by Renegade Kid to Konami as a proof of concept for a Silent Hill game on the Nintendo DS. Konami turned them down and thus we ended up with Dementium: The Ward on the DS instead, which performed well enough to warrant a sequel. Prior to now I had never played the original games, but I figured if it was good enough to get a remaster, surely I'd like it?
Shadow Complex Remastered rated for PC in Europe Posted: 01 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST Whenever people list off their favorite metroidvanias, Shadow Complex is one of the ones most often that hits that list, especially when it comes to western offerings. While the game is currently set for Xbox One backward compability, it's kind of stuck on the Xbox 360 island otherwise -- unless this rating has something to say about it. According to a PEGI listing, Shadow Complex Remastered is a thing that will be happening on PC at some point. I mean, it's not like Chair Entertainment has a lot going on at the moment, as it kind of fell off the console and PC map after creating a string of Infinity Blade games for mobile devices, so it makes sense. Shadow Complex Remastered [PEGI] Thanks, Rich!
Danganronpa 3 is an anime, new Danganronpa game also coming Posted: 01 Dec 2015 10:00 PM PST Two new Danganronpa projects have just been announced and I have no idea how I feel about either of them. For one, Danganronpa 3 is actually not a video game. It's an anime, subtitled The End of Hope's Peak, and will hypothetically bring the story of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc's survivors to a close. Based on the teaser image for the anime, it appears Makoto Naegi will be answering for his actions in Danganronpa 2, which I won't spoil because A) you should really play the best game of 2014 & B) we do not have enough bandwidth on the site for me to explain the story of Danganronpa. According to a Famitsu translation posted on NeoGAF, the show will "satisfy fans of the series, [using] tricks that can only be done in anime." We also have a handful of new details regarding New Danganronpa V3, the next video game in this franchise. The same GAF translation notes that V3 will focus on bluffing as a player mechanic. "The trials this time will rely on lying to take down your opponent's arguments," GAF user GSR writes. Every robot animal seen in the games to date will appear, including Monomi (which doesn't make sense, see previous comments regarding Danganronpa 2) and series mascot Monokuma. New Danganronpa V3 will be coming to PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2016, according to a previous announcement. What little I gleaned from the respective trailers seems to indicate Ultimate Despair will be the arc villains going forward, with the Hope's Peak gang left behind. I can get behind that; it's hard to shoehorn high schoolers into the same situation over and over, but I'd still like to see the original crew in a support role going forward. Also, is that a robot clone of Makoto headlining V3? Hell yeah, actually. New Danganronpa V3 / Danganronpa 3 thread [NeoGAF]
Guess which Grand Theft Auto game just magically appeared on PSN Posted: 01 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST A year after the Xbox 360 release, a PlayStation 3 port of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has appeared on the PlayStation Store. There was no announcement. It wasn't there, and then suddenly it was. IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE. Replacing the 'classic' version that was available via the store, it looks as though this port takes its cue from the Xbox 360 mobile port, boasting the same trophies as the Xbox 360 version. You'll need $15/£11 and 2.1GB of space on your PS3 to make it your own. When asked why it didn't annualise its biggest titles, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two recently said: "We think with the non-sports titles, we are better served to create anticipation and demand. On the one hand to rest the title, and, on the other hand, to have the highest quality in the market, which takes time. You can't do that annually."
Here's how much space you'll need to play the Uncharted 4 beta Posted: 01 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST You'll need around 7GB free to play the Uncharted 4 beta. The news was revealed by developer Naughty Dog during a livestream last night. The beta will be available from this Friday, December 4. While you won't be able to pre-load the beta client (gah), you'll have until Sunday, December 13 to spend quality time with Nate and co. Uncharted 4 is due out exclusively on the PS4 in March, 2016. Are you tempted to give the beta a try? Uncharted 4 beta client is around 7GB [VG24/7]
Black Desert Online is getting its first English-language beta test this month Posted: 01 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST Upcoming Korean MMO Black Desert Online has been making waves for quite a while now. The game is already in closed beta in Korea and Russia, and so the trickle of information coming from it has meant people have been eager for a while now to get their hands on the fully translated and tweaked western release. Publisher Daum Games has announced when we’ll finally be able to take a gander for ourselves at the game: Wednesday, December 16 will see the start of the first English-language closed beta. The beta will see improvements from the already available Korean and Russian betas, such as additions the character creation (which is already ridiculously in-depth), new weather systems, balance changes and more. There will also be a PVP component in the beta, with the level cap roughly halved to make things fairer for the rush of players. If you’ve pre-purchased the game’s Conqueror’s Package, you have guaranteed access to the test when it begins. For the rest of us, applications are open on the Black Desert Online website. Registration closes on December 9, so you may want to get in there quickly. On launch, Black Desert Online will be free-to-play in Korea, Russia, and Japan. In Europe and North America, it will be buy-to-play with no subscription, like Guild Wars 2 or The Secret World. The western release will have some major changes from the other releases, notably the progression system will be tweaked, presumably to accommodate the change in pricing structure.
Play Final Fantasy XIV for free for four days Posted: 01 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST Are you a lapsed Final Fantasy XIV player? Did you try it out, only to find it didn’t quite click with you, or maybe you clocked hundreds of hours and, unfortunately, have been unable to renew your subscription? Well, turns out you’re exactly the sort of person Square Enix is aiming at with its new promotional campaign for the game. If you have a valid but inactive Final Fantasy XIV account and log into the game this month, you’ll be rewarded with 96 hours of free access to the game. You’ll have full access to all the game has to offer, but there is no mention of the Heavensward expansion so don’t go in expecting to be able to give that a try. Just to make it clear, the promotion isn’t for 96 hours of play time, but for the amount of time the game will be available to you. When you first log in you will be given four days to play for as much as you like, and then after that your access will be revoked again. This free access is running until December 31, however players logging in on December 28 or later won’t get the full 96 hours. You can read the full explanation of the event on Lodestone. Is this enough to drag you back to Eorzea? I might give it another try because I did like what I played, but the terribly confusing in-game maps made exploring a bit of a drag for me.
