Destructoid's award for Best PS4 Game of 2015 goes to... Posted: 19 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Was there ever any doubt? Of all the distinguished and exemplary titles to grace the PlayStation 4 in 2015, few approach the wit and artistry of From Software and Hidetaka Miyazaki's Bloodborne. As the latest installment in what is, for all intents and purposes, an established and beloved series, Bloodborne walks the line between refining the formula established by Demon's Souls and setting out on its own. It subverts expectations and challenges much of what we've previously known to be true, brazenly turning one familiar concept on its head after another and to great effect. So eerily similar and yet astonishingly different, it invites us to fall back into old habits, but ultimately forces us to learn new tricks. It asks us to throw caution (along with our shields and armor) to the wind. It challenges us, when things are at their most desperate, to push ahead, rather than recoil, allowing us to regain lost health by courageously striking back at our attackers. Bloodborne gives whole new meaning to keeping your friends close and enemies closer still. It plays hard to get, pushing you away as an invitation to come closer -- and not just in combat. The story is, at once, almost invisible and plain to see. It stands out in the open with indifference to the player, seldom demanding to be heard, but eager to reward those willing to lend it an ear. The city of Yharnam and its surrounding lands are harsh and make us fight with every fiber of our being for each and every step there we take, but the struggle is worth it. For all the pain and frustration it may bring, Bloodborne pays back everything ten times over and then some. This game is an achievement and without a doubt our favorite PlayStation 4 release of the year. Read more... |
Flappy Bird creator releases a new game Posted: 19 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST Well, maybe "new" isn't the operative word. Flappy Bird studio DotGears has released Swing Copters 2, a sequel to last year's Swing Copters, which itself wasn't all that different from the game that put the Vietnamese developer on the map. This iteration maintains the simple, yet brutal gameplay of its predecessor, but introduces new ways to monetize the formula, allowing players to purchase new characters and items for $0.99 or more. Swing Copters 2 is currently playable for free via the iOS App Store and Android marketplaces. Swing Copters 2 [Google Play, iTunes, Amazon]

That ugly Final Fantasy VI port is out now on PC Posted: 19 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST I have good news and bad news. The good news is Final Fantasy VI, otherwise known as the best Final Fantasy, is now available on Steam. The bad news is it's a port of the hideous mobile version. As for while the mobile versions of classic Final Fantasy games look so terrible, developers Bill Stiernberg (Cosmic Star Heroine) and Lars Doucet (Defender’s Quest) have explored this subject in great detail, mostly finding fault with inconsistent art that renders the whole thing a clashy mess. You can find nicer-looking iterations on PlayStation Network and Nintendo's Virtual Console, but if you're dead set on playing this on PC (and you're anti-emulation), this is option that exists. PS2 launch title FantaVision rockets to PS4 next week Posted: 19 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST FantaVision is coming to PlayStation 4 next Tuesday, according to the PlayStation Blogcast. The fireworks game was initially conceived as a tech demo to showcase the power of the PlayStation 2 before later being converted into a retail game to launch alongside the system. The gameplay involves stringing together a series of identically-colored flares as they are shot into the air and then detonating them to create pretty pyrotechnic explosions and boost your score. And as if a game about setting off fireworks wasn't strange enough, Sony, for some reason, decided to punctuate the core experience with bizarre footage of children, families, and other people. Posted: 19 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST Until Dawn’s success is much deserved, considering it was co-written by the guy who gave us The Last Winter, in which Ron Perlman and Connie Britton are terrorised by a ghost moose. Jokes aside, and regardless of the story’s intentional hokum, it’s a game that’s given more credibility to digitised acting in mainstream games; the kind of cinematic emulation developers have been lusting over for years. Whereas David Cage’s convoluted attempts alienated the casual audience, Supermassive Games went for the simpler approach, combining a video game’s need for genre with an informed audience’s need for choice. Yes, at times, Until Dawn suffers from moments of the uncanny valley, but it’s still a technological leap forward, which resulted in commercial and critical acclaim. We’re now starting to see what next-gen is capable of and what happens when a profitable industry is able to afford network friendly faces. Whether or not this stifles character or artistic creativity is certainly up for debate, but either way, we’re in the midst of a second wind; a dormant idea resurrected by better tech and development teams determined to side-step mistakes of the past. PSA: Watch out for Star Wars spoilers on Xbox Live and Battlefront Posted: 19 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially hit theaters, which means everyone who cares a modicum about popular culture is booking to the theaters to experience this sweeping cultural moment before some jerk spoils the film's major twists. I come here not to impart judgement on spoiler-phobia (it's not every day real, honest-to-God Star Wars comes back from the dead, so I kinda get it), but to deliver a warning. According to NeoGAF user Xaero Gravity, certain Xbox Live users have been combing through their 'recent player' lists and delivering the spoilers like a TIE Bomber. Their advice is solid: don't open messages from unknown players until you see the movie. Another GAF user names one of the culprits, but I won't start a witch hunt without first-hand information. The post isn't difficult to find if you decide on a pre-emptive block, though. If you're playing Star Wars Battlefront on PC, avoiding spoilers might be a shade more difficult than simply opting out of a message. A second NeoGAF thread warns of Battlefront players changing their avatars to custom-made spoiler rundowns, which has been corroborated by a reddit thread. The OP has provided proof by way of a screenshot, but even their valiant blurring attempts don't quite hide everything -- don't click if you have any working theories. The avatar scourge continues into Call of Duty: Black Ops III, according to a post in the Battlefront GAF thread and a video from Call of Duty YouTuber HoneyBadger (which, as of writing, has spoilers lurking in the comments). Both advocate disabling user-generated content in Black Ops's options menu, which is a great idea regardless of how you feel about Star Wars spoilers. As the week goes on, it becomes exponentially more and more unlikely you will make it to The Force Awakens with fresh eyes, so you should get on that ASAP. More jerks will see the movie, and they'll find new ways of spoiling it for everyone else. Maybe one day we'll all look up and find that an entrepreneurial asshole has hired a skywriter to ruin the secret of John Boyega's bottomless charm.

GMG Winter Sale: $9 Cities Skylines and Shadow of Mordor GOTY Posted: 18 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST GOG and GamersGate had their respective Winter sales earlier this month, but it's now GMG's turn to bust out the "savings." Today the digital retailer launched their 2015 Winter sale with discounts up 92% off after a stacking coupon on select titles. Full break down of the sale here or check our top picks below. While we're billing this as a "Winter Sale" there is actually another "Best of 2015" sale also going on, for simplicity's sake we've combined everything below. Most games require you to use a coupon code at checkout to get the best price. Top pick includes lowest price Cities: Skylines and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor GOTY. Both are clocking in at only around $9 a pop. Read more... |
Black Ops III multiplayer is free this weekend Posted: 18 Dec 2015 04:00 PM PST Once you're done with your obligatory two Star Wars viewings this weekend (one to get it in before the spoilers hit, and another to make sure it was really that good), maybe you should fire up your PC and play some Black Ops III. The game's multiplayer mode will be available as a free download for all Steam users, and will run until Sunday at 1 PM Pacific time. If you like what you see, the vanilla game will also be on sale for $44.99, along with the 'Digital Deluxe' version (which contains the game's Season Pass) for $79.99. I found the multiplayer fit my busy November mindset beautifully, so I heartily recommend it to those with just enough time for a really solid online shooter. I wish more games would do free weekends like this. Demos are inherently limiting, and have rarely caused me to buy the product in question; they're often just tutorials that don't give an indicator of the full experience. If you're able to wring every drop of Black Ops-themed fun you can from this weekend, then maybe paying $60 for the full package was never the right move for you. Only one way to find out! Also, according to the legalese at the bottom of this press release, Activision has trademarked "stylized roman numeral III" so watch out, Tomb Raider 3.
