Ogle virtual girls in Dead or Alive Xtreme 3's new trailer Posted: 18 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST Yesterday we snuck a peek at the titillating environments of the Asia-exclusive Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, and today we ogle virtual girls with a hint of gameplay in this latest not-safe-for-work trailer. Most of this trailer looks surprisingly similar to the previous title, but what has me interested is the flag game; is that a real thing people play? Do people actually lay down facing away from a flag then make a mad dash to grab it? If you know what this is called, do tell, because I want to play it in real life. It seems like a whole lot of fun. Read more... |
Sick of playing Team Fortress 2? Tough break Posted: 18 Dec 2015 12:30 PM PST When was the last time you played Team Fortress 2? During the Gun Mettle event way back in the summer? Maybe when they introduced that weird sports mode a few months back? During Halloween? This very morning in your little Pyro themed underoos while you drank your Atomic Bonk energy drink? NOT RECENTLY ENOUGH according to Valve. So in its continuing effort to make sure you'll never escape the year 2007, TF2 is introducing yet another update/event/bear-trap-to-keep-you-playing. The Tough Break update seems structurally similar to the Gun Mettle update. A $5.99 cover charge gets you into a fabulous (metaphorical) VIP room of (non-metaphorical) contract killings and guns. As you complete randomly distributed contracts, you will be rewarded with random cases that contain random guns, that are randomly graded by rarity and conditions. It's like a Russian nesting doll of tragedy. It wouldn't be an update without a few new maps and some extra cosmetic items. It's been such a long time since I've been able to keep up with all the other new maps introduced to the game, that these are functionally meaningless to me. For all I know they've been updating the game with the same three maps slightly renamed for years now. The new hotness you can spend yet more money on are a few new taunts, including a bagpipe jig for the Demoman. Really, it took them eight years to actually put bagpipes in his hands?

The Egg gets hotly anticipated sequel starring Mel Gibson Posted: 18 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Cool 3D Worlds' smash hit The Egg announced a follow up project earlier this week, The Egg 2. The great success of the original doesn't seem to have worried Cool 3D Worlds, which is going full bore into The Egg 2, ramping up production to include top flight Hollywood talent in the form of actor Mel Gibson, known for the films Braveheart and What Women Want. Garden Warfare 2 has a full-on hub world Posted: 18 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 looks far more fleshed out than I had originally expected it to be. If all you care about is competitive multiplayer (which was super good in the original!), you'll still be able to melt hours away with that, but there's now also a hub world to mess about in. As detailed in this video, Backyard Battleground will be home to a wave-based defensive mode called Flag of Power, mini-games, character customization, quests, and secrets. It connects you to everything in the game, essentially, and you can explore with up to three friends in co-op. Read more... |

No Friday plans? How about a Hot Date (with a dog) Posted: 18 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST I covered and played the heck out of the MERCILESS pug speed dating sim Hot Date when it was released this summer, but maybe you didn't. So already we're doing good: reminding you of a cool game you could be playing right now! But wait, there's more. Hot Date just got a mobile launch on the iTunes App Store. Maybe you hate downloading and playing cool games on your personal computer (PC) but love downloading and playing games on your mobile cellphone. Maybe it's an easy opportunity to show off a cool game to the same kind of folks who lose hours to Neko Atsume on their cellies but don't play games otherwise. Maybe you just have nothing to do tonight. I don't know, I don't know your life.

Arkham Knight's latest PC patch is drenched with fixes Posted: 18 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST David Cage had nothing to do with the newest Batman: Arkham Knight PC patch, but you'd be forgiven if you mistakenly believed that he did. Not Heavy Rain but heavy rain is the most notable change made to the game among a big ol' list of improvements. Added in is a more extreme rainfall at the beginning of Arkham Knight. Given the game's performance issues on PC, it's very possible that the waterworks were originally scaled back to alleviate some of the resource-intensive strain. Now that Arkham Knight is no longer unplayable on PC (yet still far from ideal), the developers are likely working on getting the game to the point it should've been in the first place. The rest of the changes can be read below, un-minced as Warner Bros. posted on Arkham Knight's Steam page. It's mostly a bunch of fixes and optimizations -- corrections that will be welcomed with open arms by anyone who hasn't given up on it yet. PC Update - December 17th [Steam] Read more... |

New Conan the Barbarian game being announced next month Posted: 18 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST Funcom, the developer that has run the Age of Conan MMO since 2008, is in line to make a new Conan the Barbarian game after a partnership with Conan Properties leaving Funcom as the main PC and console developer in the Conan world. The MMO developer is also working on a spooky game called The Park set in the same world as its interesting Secret World MMO. The company needs a boost after reports a few months ago that it is flagging after poor performance by its LEGO MMO. A new Conan is one of three games the company will announce in 2016. "We are tremendously excited to be strengthening our relationship with Conan Properties," Funcom CEO Rui Casais said. "Conan the Barbarian is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest and most recognizable fantasy heroes, and as game developers, working with such a character and being able to draw from the fantastically detailed world of Hyboria is nothing short of a dream come true." Aside from Funcom's Conan MMO, the only other recent Conan game was 2007's Conan, a typical God of War knockoff. I'm not sure how much cultural cachet the Barbarian has these days. It feels a bit like remaking Clash of the Titans in 2010. Or that 2011 Conan the Barbarian movie I completely forgot about. But Funcom will announce its new Conan game in January, 2016.

Fyrst look at more beautiful Firewatch fyytage Posted: 18 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST I wrote about Firewatch's topless teens, meaty hands, and mystery way, way back at the beginning of this year (wanna feel old!?). The gorgeous, narrative driven game from artist Olly Moss, Mark of the Ninja designer Nels Anderson, and season one The Walking Dead writers and designers Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin seemed like it was doing that same GDC demo at PlayStation Experience, but IGN has some additional gameplay from after that section in the game. And the "first" thumbnail looks like "fyrst" against the x-shaped beams; that's that joke, explained. Not a great one, but mildly amusing. I watched enough to see that cardboard ranger, but I'm pretty content not seeing anymore of Firewatch, especially with the dialogue focus, until I can play the whole thing for myself. But it's so dang pretty I won't hold it against you if you want to see more.

Here, have another pretty Overwatch cinematic Posted: 18 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST I'm not in the Overwatch beta, but that's not about to stop me from marveling at this latest Blizzard cinematic. It's made up of character vignettes that hint at a much wider world, one I really want to see more of in and outside of the game itself. I'm so on board with these designs. Read more... |
Sony and Microsoft are competing for the Star Wars crowd Posted: 18 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST Statistically speaking, every single person on earth will go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens this weekend (sample size: my Twitter timeline and Facebook feed). Before the main attraction begins, many of those people are going to get a teaser from the video game world, either from Sony or Microsoft's flagship franchise. Both PlayStation and Xbox are taking advantage of the preview space to advertise their respective game. New ads are playing for both Uncharted 4 and Halo 5, both companies confirmed on Twitter. Not surprising given that there's surely a fair amount of overlap between the Star Wars crowd and the video game crowd. None of this really matters because no one's takeaway from watching the new Star Wars movie is that some pre-film ads were really cool. There's a sizable audience with related interests, so it's tough to fault these companies for getting some ads out. But, people leaving those theaters are probably going to want to focus on a different topic of conversation. @PlayStation, @aarongreenberg [Twitter]

Xbox is gearing up for its 'biggest sale ever' Posted: 18 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Xbox's next sale is kind of like the Amazon River. It's definitely wide, but will it be deep? Bonus Geography Fact For Reading A Video Game Site: The Amazon River is the widest river in the world. That's far from the best lede I've ever written, but here we are in the second paragraph, no worse for the wear. All of this is a roundabout way of saying that Xbox has another games sale next month and more than 200 titles will be discounted. That's enough to make it Xbox's biggest sale ever, according to the platform-holder. It's still a mystery exactly how good the deals will be, but at least we have a hint at some of the games that will be on sale. This video shows some of Xbox's exclusives this year like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5, and Forza 6, along with some multi-platform heavy hitters like Fallout 4 and Assassin's Creed Syndicate. This whole thing starts on December 22 (next Tuesday) and goes all the way until January 7. As usual, there will be daily deals on top of a selection of discounts that run the duration of the event. Not a bad way to spend some cash that you may find in your stocking.

Rainbow Six Siege is doing a free weekend on PC Posted: 18 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Ubisoft is holding a free weekend event for Rainbow Six Siege on PC. You'll need to score an access key from a pal (or a friendly stranger) who owns the game, but that shouldn't be hard. Current players can send up to four Siege codes, and for each one that gets redeemed, they will earn a 24-hour Renown Boost (but not until "shortly after" this event ends). Folks who redeem a free-weekend code can pre-load the game immediately and will be able to play from today at 3:01pm Pacific until Sunday, December 20 at 9:01pm Pacific. Siege is also 25 percent off ($45) to own on Uplay. Any progress you make this weekend will transfer. By all means, unload your extra codes in the comments.

Coleco announces new cartridge-based console Posted: 18 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST Are you old enough to remember the ColecoVision console from the '80s? Do you yearn for the days of old when games came on cartridges and everything had a nice physical manual? Do you often buy into new consoles announced with no hardware details because of overwhelming nostalgia? If you answered yes to the questions above then Coleco has a console just for you and the ten other people that buy one: Coleco Chameleon. The Chameleon is said to be a "modern-day take on the classic game console" that will "play compilations of favorite games from the past." Read more... |
Posted: 18 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST Video games are increasingly expensive products to create. Every generation as graphics increase in quality, the sheer size of teams required to put together new amazing, fantastic worlds grows dramatically. With video games costing so much to produce, it's no wonder established franchises are annualized and brought back out time after time, ensuring healthy profits for investors. While Assassin's Creed comes around every year for another round of milking the cash cow, today we're talking about an entirely separate variety of games. We're talking about new brands created this year, risking assured profits for creative scope. Yes, it's time to talk about the best new IPs that were launched this year. Read more... |
Rashid and Laura are getting their own Street Fighter V one-shot comic Posted: 18 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST Free Comic Book Day is a pretty fun nationwide event that hits once a year. In essence, a bunch of different franchises have a few free issues to choose from, and most comic book stores across the US participate in giving away goodies and said comics. It's a promotional event, but it's also social, and an excuse for comic book creators to craft new series. Capcom and Udon have done just that with Street Fighter V, which will be debuting a special one-shot issue that focuses on Rashid, Laura, Birdie, Karin, and Charlie Nash. You'll be able to pick it up on May 7. For those who aren't aware, "one-shot" refers to a one-off standalone issue that sometimes (but not always) leads to a new series. Read more... |
Final Fantasy XV might be out by summer 2016, next major update in January Posted: 18 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST It's been a tough month, year, decade for core Final Fantasy entry fans. XIII in most ways was a disappointment, XIV, while great, is still an MMO that many people aren't going to buy into, and can you believe that it's been nearly a decade since XII? Based on the Duscae demo I think we're going to be in for a treat when XV drops, and now Square Enix is saying that it might be ready for a summer 2016 target. Tagged by way of an online questionnaire that nonchalantly asks "would you prefer XV or Persona 5 if they were both released at the same time," it looks like Square is fishing for the best possible release date. In other news, the next big update will arrive in January, with the "Active Time Report" update, so we'll likely know more then. Until that time, more waiting! Mobile puzzler Threes playable online for free Posted: 18 Dec 2015 02:45 AM PST Boy, do I love Threes. It's a charming puzzle game; a sublime blend of simplicity and polish. It's won many awards, including a 'Best of 2014' from Apple itself. Unfortunately, developers Asher Vollmer and Greg Wohlwend had their flavors chomped hard by the plagiarists behind 2048 and the con men behind putting 2048 on the App Store. Making a profit in the mobile space is difficult enough, especially when the free game biting your style is more popular than the product you're charge for. Vollmer and Wohlwend have been trying to solve the money problem ever since 2048's inception, including a free version of Threes with ads, an Xbox One port, some physical merchandise to capitalize on the game's impeccable graphic design, and now a browser version of Threes that I can only assume is some kind of honeypot. I've been known to mess around with free browser Tetris from time to time in order to chase those Tuesday blues away, and this could be a solid replacement. The phone version is still the primo version in my eyes; there's something about the accessibility of having this game on the tiny rectangular computer I have with me at all times. But if you can get past the persistent tutorialization, the browser version absolutely works! We are the folks that made Threes [...] AMA [Reddit]

Super Mario Maker is getting a ton of new costumes this week Posted: 18 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST As I've said recently, Nintendo is doing a commendable job of supporting Super Mario Maker. Sure it still has a ways to go until it becomes the definitive level-making tool it was touted as, but a lot of these updates are getting it one step closer to that reality. In addition to the three new tools this week, you'll also find brand new 8-bit costumes for Mr. Saturn, Master Belch, and the Badge Arcade Bunny. The former two are from Earthbound, and the latter is from the titular Badge Arcade app on 3DS. Those event courses should arrive tomorrow. Read more... |
Posted: 18 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST Before Level-5 was creating its Yo-Kai Watch Empire and dazzling Nintendo fans with Professor Layton, it was creating amazing RPGs in the early 2000s. Among classics like Dragon Quest VIII, Jeanne d'Arc, and Rogue Galaxy, its very first game, Dark Cloud, stands out to me the most. I don't know what spurred me to pick it up nearly 15 years ago -- maybe it was a magazine preview -- but I fell in love that very evening. It hasn't aged well in a few ways, but it still holds up. League dev Riot Games purchased by Chinese company Posted: 18 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST Recently, League of Legends developers Riot Games inadvertently announced the acquisition of Riot by Chinese holdings company Tencent Holdings Ltd in a blog post regarding changes to the company's compensation policy. "Our majority investor, Tencent, recently purchased the remaining equity of Riot Games." As befits a holding company, Tencent has its hands in many pots, providing services to China such as distributing HBO shows, NBA games, and music from numerous American record labels. In addition to owning Riot Games, the company also has a minority stake in Activision Blizzard and a 48% share of Epic Games. According to the company's December 2014 earnings statement, Tencent's assets are worth 171.66 billion Chinese Yuan, or around 26 billion USD. With the acquisition of a wildly popular MOBA, that number is sure to balloon over the coming months. Currently, we have no word as to how this will affect Riot Games in the long term, aside from the aforementioned change to their compensation policy. It's possible this means employees with stock options will receive cash as a result of the purchase, or it could mean something else! Riot and its team have never been shy regarding the company's full-time benefits, so we'll likely hear employee scuttlebutt over the coming months. It's a little difficult to completely grasp the impact of this purchase, considering that I am very much not from China. The core of this deal, independent of national boundaries, is this; a company that exists to increase its asset pool just bought one of the most popular games in China. Worst-case scenario, League and Riot stay exactly the way they are. Best-case? This cultural tour-de-force gets even bigger. League of Legends now owned entirely by Chinese giant Tencent [ars technica]

Iron Banner is coming back to Destiny this month Posted: 18 Dec 2015 12:30 AM PST For those of you who enjoy Destiny's Iron Banner PVP event, you won't have to sneak away from whatever family events you're doing this Christmas week to play it. Bungie has announced that it will start on December 29, running for a week. This lines up with the end of the SRL Sparrow Racing event, which so far has been a pretty major disappointment. The physics are still wonky, a lot of players just ram others instead of actually racing, and the fact that there are only two courses ensures that it gets boring after a single day of play. Posted: 18 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST Bandai Namco has just released a countdown site, teasing the announcement of uh… something. Right now it’s anyone’s guess as to what it could be, as “hunger” doesn’t give us a lot to go on. Is it Armored Core? Ridge Racer? God Eater? Digimon? Hell, even Pac-Man fits the "hunger" prerequisite. Considering just how many IPs Bandai Namco is currently sitting on, it could be just about anything. Whatever it is, it better be worth the three whole days of lead-up before we get an official announcement. Any ideas, gang?

You might be able to get P.T. back with this risky third-party method Posted: 17 Dec 2015 11:30 PM PST Ah, the cancellation and immediate destruction of P.T. The first major non-hearsay sign that Konami was on a downward trend. It's pretty clear now that the game was abolished from sight because of Konami's issues with Kojima, all the while making his life a living hell throughout 2015 But alas, if you don't have P.T. on your PS4 anymore, there is a method of getting it back -- you'll just have to assume a ton of risk. In essence, you're going to download a program on PC, run a proxy through your PS4, and you'll be able to download the game. Some users are reporting bricked consoles and other errors, so again, do so at your own risk. I know this isn't on the minds of many folks, but game preservation is important. As much as Konami wants us to think that P.T. doesn't exist, it did -- it's a piece of gaming history and a piece of art. How to re-download P.T. [Gamexeon] Read more... |

BioShock creator: 'gamers want an experience that lasts more than 10-12 hours' Posted: 17 Dec 2015 09:00 PM PST BioShock creator Ken Levine has revealed that his upcoming project will feature an open world. Talking to NPR's On Point (via GameSpot), he confirmed that his latest project will depart from the more traditional, linear storytelling of past games like BioShock, and will instead a more open-world style to encourage multiple playthroughs. "The AAA, single-player narrative game is starting to disappear. Kind of games like BioShock. There's fewer of them being made," said Levine. Read more... |
