Study: Half of American adults play video games, 10% call themselves gamers

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST

A new study by Pew Research Center presents data on American adults' views of video games, their impact, and the term gamer.

The study found that while 49 percent of all American adults play video games, only 10 percent of those identify themselves as gamers. 60 percent of participants believe video games are mostly played by men, while a nearly identical share of men and women report playing games (48 percent of women; 50 percent of men). Men are twice as likely as women to call themselves gamers.

Rocket League revenue nears $50 million

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 01:00 PM PST

Rocket League developer Psyonix is a pretty heart warming story. In business 15 years now, profitable for the last 10 of those, still independent. Had the idea for Rocket League as far back as 2008's Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, but it sold poorly. How do you fix that? That's exposure, marketing; not that your game was bad.

Rocket League, released this year, took two years and $2 million. Psyonix, "paid the bills by working on some of the biggest games in the industry," like Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War. Deciding to partner for a free release on PlayStation Plus ended up going great, generating way more word of mouth this time around and accounting for a non-specific "several million" free downloads that went a long way towards the eight million total PC and PlayStation accounts that exist now. It's coming to Xbox One, too.

And so $2 million spent in development with revenue nearing $50 million, or 25 times the initial investment, for a dang good game. Recently Universal and Psyonix agreed to split revenue from sales of Back to the Future's DeLorean while Knight Rider's KITT may be on the way. But it's still a heck of a time for someone like me who hasn't spent a dime on DLC. Good job, Psyonix. I remember when I made my first $50 million. It's gratifying.

Katana Zero has the right stuff

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 12:30 PM PST

Hot damn, Katana Zero.

I'm only now hearing about the snappy neo-noir action-platformer from Aski (Tower of Heaven, Pause Ahead) despite an apparent showing at PAX Prime in September. Whoops! This more recent teaser made its way to our tips line today, and I am glad that it did.

Damn, look at Seymour shred Splatoon tunes on his guitar

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST

Splatoon's music was love at first listen. Last year, Nintendo initially drew me to its then-unknown game about squidkids thanks in large part to the kickass theme song. It's now nearly 2016, and I'm not even close to tired of hearing that energizing tune.

Lovable Destructoid community member SeymourDuncan17 is also a fan. Today, he posted a cover of "Splattack!" on the site (if you aren't reading quick posts, you're missing out!) and we wanted to share it here on the front page as well.

You rock, Seymour!

League of Legends team chairman and general villain arrested on fraud

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST

It would be difficult to have avoided the name (and mousy little face) Martin Shkreli if you've been online recently. Shkreli, a pharmaceutical executive, made headlines after raising the price of the life-saving drug Daraprim by more than 5,000 percent, from $13.50 per pill to $750 per pill.

Shkreli stayed in the news by being incredibly smug and shitty about the whole thing, refusing to lower the price while claiming that all the attention nets him, "50-100 date solicitations a day" and bragging about how much money he has like a complete asshole. A competing pharmaceutical company then made a one dollar version of the pill.

Recently, Shkreli was back in the news, revealed as the mysterious buyer of the sole copy of the new Wu-Tang Clan album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. It was auctioned off to the highest bidder and, surprise surprise, it ended up being Shkreli who paid "millions" for it ($2 million is the current reported price).

Car crashes into gamer playing Fallout 4 in his home

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

Ben Rose was playing Fallout 4, minding his own business, when a Hyundai Sonata burst through his wall like a violent Kool-Aid Man before plowing directly into him. Fortunately for Ben and the driver, the words "Wasted!" didn't pop over his body. Ben survived.

When speaking about the accident, Rose delivered the following dare I say epic quote: "You play in a wasteland and then your apartment turns into a wasteland. Cars versus people don't really end up well."

23% off Street Fighter V deal back again for Steam/PC

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST

Street Fighter V's third beta starts as early as midnight 12:01am PT Friday on PS4 and PC (Steam) and will end at 10:00pm Sunday. Pre-ordering the Steam PC copy will grant you beta access, and if you're a fan of the series on PC, you can get some relatively decent pre-order deals for Street Fighter V.

At Green Man Gaming, the current site-wide 23% off code discounts SFV to $46.20, although the coupon will expire as early as tomorrow, December 18 at 8:00am Pacific. Generally, GMG extends its codes through the weekend, but we have word that a lower discount coupon of 20% off will be showing up tomorrow in conjunction with a planned sales event.

You can also grab a copy at France-based DLGamer, where the game is at a slightly cheaper $45.59, or 24% off. Both stores are authorized Capcom retailers and as such will include the Chun-Li battle costume pre-order bonus.

As of writing, both retailers are handing out pre-order bonus keys that grant you access to the beta starting tonight. Characters included in this phase will be Ryu, Cammy, Birdie, Necalli, Laura, and Nash. Word from Capcom is there may be more characters coming in the three-day period.

Note: the server will experience two separate 10-hour maintenance windows during the beta phase -- the first starting at 8:00am on the 18th, and the second at 6:00pm on the 19th -- so plan your game time accordingly.

12 minutes of Mafia 3 gameplay show off beautiful New Orleans

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST

Here's our first look at Mafia III from 2K and newly formed Hangar 13 since the obligatory Animals announcement trailer earlier this year. The sequel is a departure for the series, instead set in 1968 Louisiana and starring Vietnam War veteran Lincoln Clay out for revenge on the Italian mafia that betrayed him.

And damn, look at that colorful, fictional Bourbon St! I am a sucker for neon and this game has some Batman Arkham level of color. Look at that bit where Lincoln stalks low rung drug dealers through a cemetery to get information en route to that sick car slide and "Drive Like a Madman" interrogation sequence.

It's a bit shootout heavy and the driving pushes it a bit. "We want you to feel like you're a stuntman in a Hollywood action move" -- I'm willing to bet a black dude in the 60's south waving a gun, crashing into cop cars, and driving off of ramps is a bit too conspicuous and leans towards Grand Theft Auto-style functionless mayhem versus tying into some kind of grounded Devil in a Blue Dress story. But I'm at least digging the original setting. Still, even reaching Sleeping Dogs-level heights wouldn't be too bad.

And I really want to drink at that jazz bar. Though Lincoln would rather do a video game style stealth takedown wherein he stabs a guy in the eye three times in front of a peace sign graffiti. We're just always at odds.

The Division repurposes 'Silent Night' and, wow, is it ever bleak

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

All is not calm, all is not right. Not in The Division's war-torn city. "Mom and dad died in the blast." "Everything on earth fell apart." That's a big old lump of coal for humanity, eh?

"Silent Night" is no stranger to video game trailers. Just last year, The Order: 1886 used it to add an extra layer of despair over the game's slow, cinematic style. It's a move that's unlikely to fail. The song's just that good.

By the end of The Division's take, the sorrowful little boy pleads to "bring back the world that we loved." It's hard not to feel as if that request transcends the boundary of video games.

Yep, Dragon's Dogma looks nice on PC

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST

Capcom is bringing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen to PC. After all these years, it's really happening. Patrick recently sampled the new port and he liked what he saw.

There's a new trailer out today which, more than anything, is an excuse to remind that the PC version isn't far off now. It's hitting Steam on January 15, 2016 for $29.99.

For anyone coming in completely new to Dragon's Dogma, know that you're in for a special game. It's goofy in a good way (you've heard the memes, I'm sure), with a deep combat system. The spells are just wild. Also, being able to climb on monsters will never cease to amuse me.

Xenoblade director: 'Most of the movies, TV dramas, novels, and games I pick up are made in the West'

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST

Xenoblade Chronicles X is a pretty fantastic game -- but director Tetsuya Takahashi doesn't necessarily think that Japan can keep churning out titles like this for forever.

When interviewed by Time, Takahashi noted that "It seems to me that building the entire world of the game itself (making it open-world) is considered one must-have element for Western RPGs nowadays, but that just can’t be done in the current Japan scene. But lately, I’ve started to wonder about whether this is really just because of budgetary issues. I think this is probably due to differences in cultural tastes, but in the current situation, it’s difficult to take content created in Japan and have it accepted in the West. As a result, you can only create things scaled to make money within Japan alone, and it becomes this negative spiral."

He went on to say that "Most of the movies, TV dramas, novels, and games I pick up are made in the West," and that he doesn't have much interest in current Japanese media. Having said all that, Monolith Soft isn't going anywhere. Takahashi noted that the next project (which is assumed to already be underway) will be "pretty different [from Xenoblade Chronicles X]," and that he likes to "keep creating things with different approaches."

There's a lot more there in the full interview if you're interested, including tidbits on why there are optional datapacks, and how they designed the game to accommodate both mech and human playstyles.

The third Street Fighter V beta kicks off tomorrow, here are all the details

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

Capcom is gearing up to hold the third beta for Street Fighter V. If that seems like a lot, well, it kind of is by today's standards. Capcom's using these events less as a marketing stunt and more as actual tests to improve the game. Crazy, eh?

The beta, which is available on both PS4 and PC, starts tomorrow at 12:01am PT and runs until December 20 at 10pm PT. Ranked matches, casual matches, training, the Capcom Fighters Network, battle settings, and options will all be accessible. There will be two ten-hour maintenance periods where the beta will be temporarily shut down.

There's a fair amount of variation in the roster this time, too. The event will start with Ryu, Birdie, Cammy, Necalli, Nash, and Laura. Over the course of the weekend, Dhalsim and Zangief will be added into the mix. Capcom also teases that "there might be some surprise characters along the way."

All of this is leading to a February 16 launch that seems to be on-track. The betas don't always go smoothly, but that's well worth it (and expected) if the final product releases in an unbroken state.

Star Wars Battlefront is giving out double XP

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

Well, they don't call it XP, exactly, but you know what I mean!

With Force Awakens fresh on our mind this week, Star Wars Battlefront is holding a "double score" event. Between December 18 at 1:00am Pacific and December 21 at 1:00am Pacific, players can earn extra points, which means faster ranking and more credits to spend on unlocks.

Good timing. Kyle was just asking me if I still play Battlefront and whether or not he should get it. My answer was something like "Well, no, I'm taking a break, but only because I'm trying to check out a bunch of notable games I missed earlier in the year. I'll get back to it. And I wouldn't recommend paying more than $40" (which is the current price on PSN, hence the original question).

I have a long way to go to earn the Twi'lek character, so I'll likely take advantage of this bonus.

The titillating environments of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3

It's a damn shame that Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 isn't coming to the west, because, as these newly released screens show, the game has some amazing lookin' environments. It's obvious that Team Ninja put a lot of love and care into the gorgeous aesthetics. Makes me wish I could trade the chilly December weather for a Caribbean island right now!

Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 4 trailer gathers the Order of the Stone

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

Minecraft: Story Mode: A Block and a Hard Place is gearing up to release next week, so today we get the requisite launch trailer for it. This episode is promised to be the "Wither Storm Finale," with the last episode in the season reserved for an unknown conflict to be introduced.

The original five members of the Order of the Stone are all shown together here, which is puzzling for a couple different reasons related to events in past episodes. Perhaps the group has made up with Ivor for the sake of defeating a greater evil. Gabriel looks more than capable despite his frazzled state at the end of The Last Place you Look. Maybe the screen above is one of a flashback to a time when the old band was still all together.

The best new characters of 2015

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

Video games have a fair share of legendary heroes. They've been around for years and their stories have spanned generations (of both consoles and humans). They are household names: Mario, Sonic, Master Chief, Solid Snake. This post is not about them.

No, the characters here don't have a legacy to fall back on. They were introduced this year and managed to capture our hearts through wit, charm, and general badassness alone. These are the best new characters of 2015.

Can you run Dark Souls III on PC?

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

As 2016 is looming in front of us, a lot of upcoming games stand out for me, but so far my top two are Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and Dark Souls III. The latter might even be the last Souls game for a while, so I'm looking forward to going in completely blind with my traditional full solo first run.

I tend to play it on consoles first, then move to PC, but you PC-only folks can take a look at the newly minted requirements and mull on them for the next four months. As revealed by Steam, the new minimum and recommended specs are up. For reference, they're roughly the same as the Scholar of the First Sin specs, but the minimum RAM has doubled, as well as the required storage space. The graphics card and processor requirements are the exact same.

Review: Turok: Dinosaur Hunter

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

The year was 1997 and ten-year-old me was obsessed with two things, dinosaurs and video games. Imagine my excitement when the latest issue of GamePro magazine arrived in my mailbox informing me of an upcoming game where I got to roam amongst dinosaurs. I was excited to say the least.

Now, 18 years later that very same game I adored as a child is rereleased for PC and my inner child is both happy and sad; happy that I've been able to play Turok: Dinosaur Hunter again, and sad that it just isn't as perfect as I remember it.

Heroes of the Storm's Lunara sure is fun

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

Lunara arrived in Heroes of the Storm this week, and I boosted her up to level 5 in one night alone -- she's that fun to play. As an assassin she's capable of tons of damage (I'm usually top Hero Damage in unranked play), and has a unique movement gimmick to go along with it.

You see, Lunara can't use a mount, and she doesn't have a boost (at least not until an optional one at level 20). Instead, she moves slightly faster than the average hero, and gallops along at a consistent pace. It's incredibly fun in terms of escaping and chasing down foes, and the bounding animation is amazingly ridiculous.

Nintendo Download: Cloud in Super Smash Bros.!

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

It's not a bad week for Nintendo systems, as Cloud's appearance in Super Smash Bros. (and his Midgar stage) highlight the Wii U and 3DS offerings. Also on Wii U is Minecraft: Wii U Edition (sadly without GamePad inventory management), Temple of Yog, Mega Man Zero 4, Mega Man Battle Network 5 (Colonel and Protoman), and Island Flight Simulator.

Beyond the Smash DLC the 3DS is a bit light though, with The Legend of Dark Witch 2, and The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and His Square Mind. Yes, I copied and pasted that last one, haha.

Capcom celebrates Mega Man's anniversary with, what else, merchandise

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

"Area man complains about recent lack of Mega Man games."

You've seen the headline before a million times right? Well, prepare yourselves, because you're going to get some more passive aggressive complaining.

It's Mega Man's 28th birthday this year, so instead of celebrating with a new game announcement, or anything interesting, a ton of new merchandise is coming to Japan. This includes both food and merch like pillows and the like. In the near future, all we really have to look forward to is the upcoming physical release of the Mega Man Legacy Collection, including the 3DS Gold amiibo bundle.

The reception to Digital Eclipse's Collection has been overwhelmingly positive so far, and it seems like Capcom is happy with sales, so hopefully this leads to a real revival at some point. Heck, we say that every year, so who knows. Enjoy your stuff!

Review: King's Quest: Rubble Without a Cause

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

The first episode of the newly minted King's Quest series really took me by surprise. While I had been loosely following it for years, I never expected it to be one of my favorite games of the year. The cast, the animation style, and the touching storytelling were a cut above Telltale's usual offerings, and as long as The Odd Gentlemen can keep it up, it may be on its way to becoming a new classic.

While the second episode isn't quite as good as the first, it still manages to marry the wonderful cast of characters with some fun puzzle-solving mischief -- except this time, the stakes are much higher.

If this is really it for the new Super Smash Bros., what did you think of it?

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 01:30 AM PST

Nintendo just had its "final" Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct, and it was a big one. In addition to the confirmation of Corrin, the launch of Cloud (and his Midgar stage), and the announcement of some Mii costumes, Bayonetta was unveiled, which is easily the biggest news of the night. I had a chance to play with Cloud, and although he isn't my favorite fighter, he's translated incredibly well, and I'm actually having more fun with him and his stage than most of the other third-party additions in the past.

In fact, I'm enjoying Super Smash Bros. as a whole more than its predecessors, and at some point late this year, it really did top Melee for me. It's a return to form for the series after the disappointing Brawl, and has a strong foundation that casual and hardcore fans alike can get behind. More and more I've seen local tournies convert from Melee-only to the new version, and that's a good thing.

But what's your favorite? For the sake of simplicity, we'll lump in the 3DS and Wii U iterations as one vote since they are fundamentally the same game.

Konami seems to be hiring for a new Metal Gear Solid game

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 12:48 AM PST

[Update: Konami may have posted this listing earlier in the year, but it's still up currently. We've reached out to the publisher for more information.]

Oh Konami. At this point, the damage has been done. Kojima is gone, he's moved on to greener pastures where he can be more appreciated.

But still, it looks like they're keen on keeping the Metal Gear name alive, at whatever cost (including pachinko). As of this week, Konami is seeking out "highly-skilled developmental professionals" (hey I know someone who's name rhymes with "video" who would be great for this!) for a "New Metal Gear" project.

Your guess is as good as mine what they're aiming for, but despite Konami's protests that they aren't out of console development, my guess is a new mobile project or even a port job of some previous Kojima-led work.

Microsoft is adding 16 new Xbox 360 games to Xbox One today, including Doritos Crash Course

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 12:15 AM PST

Not bad, Microsoft.

After coming out of the gate swinging with backward compatibility for Xbox One, 16 new titles are being added today. Highlights include Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Braid, Halo: Reach, Hydro Thunder, Peggle, Spelunky, and Splosion Man. Check out the full list below.

Microsoft promises that "this is just the beginning," which is great news if it sticks to that plan. Again, it has really turned the console around, and I've been using it more than my PS4 this year.

Here's how to bring Rock Band 3's tracks into 4

Posted: 17 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST

Harmonix has finally added in the ability to bring over every track from Rock Band 3 into the newest iteration. Yep, that's every track, and despite the import licensing issues in the past, all 83 songs are good to go. Provided that you own the game in the same console family, you can transfer them over with a fairly simple process that costs $14.99.

Just boot up Rock Band 4, go to the "Get More Songs" section, and select exports. From there, you'll find an option for Rock Band 3, and it will authenticate. On Xbox One everything will instantly load, but on PS4 you'll have to manually re-download every song. It's all listed there so you don't have to hunt, but it's tedious. The entire process took me roughly 15 seconds to do, from start up to queuing all the songs. I hope the first two games and LEGO Rock Band are this easy.

So yeah, enjoy your Rock Band 3 songs, sans keyboard (RIP), and try them on Brutal Mode.

Super Mario Maker is getting three new elements in a free update

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 11:30 PM PST

Nintendo is constantly adding new things to Super Mario Maker, and now three new course tools are coming to the game as a free update. You can get the bumper by shaking a grinder (the spike wheel), doors can be turned into warp doors (enacted by a P-switch), and the Koopa Clown Car now has a fire variation.

The former two seem like really cool additions, and I can see making a level based or two based on their gimmicks alone. All of these will arrive on December 22, along with a "bookmark" system that lets players save levels from the web portal for later. I'm still hoping for slopes at some point Nintendo!

PlayStation VR comes with a 'Wii size' processor box

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 09:00 PM PST

With retail versions of VR headsets incoming over the next ten months, a lot of eyes are on Sony to start revealing more information regarding the final retail specs of its upcoming PlayStation VR headset. While much is still unknown, we may finally have confirmation of a long rumoured aspect of Sony's VR solution.

According to a report by Polygon, who used a near retail PlayStation VR at a recent event but were unable to take photographs of the unit, it featured the long rumoured "external processing unit," which is a box that connects the console and headset, providing additional processing power for VR software.

Basically, imagine the expansion pack for the N64, only it's external and "around the size of a Wii."

If these rumours of the size of the external processor are true, it will likely come in at around one third the size of the launch PS4 console.

Walking across Just Cause 3 takes almost nine hours

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST

Just Cause 3 is a huge open world game that constantly throws parachutes, wingsuits, cars and any manner of other vehicles at you in order to speed up your journey around the world. Nobody doubts it's a pretty huge open world, but just how huge? Well, thanks to YouTuber TheyCallMeConor we now have a pretty good idea.

TheyCallMeConor, who often walks across video game maps online, reportedly took around eight hours and forty minutes to walk across the map, which is pretty damn lengthy.

So, have you got almost nine hours to spare, or are you going to stick to vehicles in Just Cause 3?
