The PSN holiday sale has added new deals

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST

The second week of the PlayStation Network holiday sale is a step down, for my personal tastes, but maybe you'll see it in a different light. Jamestown+ is only a few bucks, though, so that has to get a nod. One of my all-time favorite shoot-'em-ups, and it's even better with co-op.

And while PaRappa the Rapper 2 isn't a part of this specific sale, that's out for PS4 as of today (it's $9.99 regularly and $7.49 with PS Plus account). I think I'll jump on that. Feels like the right move.

This box art is a good reason to get Dark Souls III on day one

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 12:30 PM PST

Box art posts are kind of terrible. Everything of substance is squarely in one image. You look at it and think "Hmm, that's pretty okay." I write words that are unnecessary, either in an attempt to describe the cover, or whining about my obligation to write. No winners here, really.

With all that out of the way, the alternate Day One Edition box art for Dark Souls III is pretty slick. Whatshisface is kneeled down, praying or something. It's like a medieval take on a guy with a gun looking away from the camera. But, it's somehow not douchefully done.

Look at all those unnecessary words! A whole paragraph! Really earning my keep around Casa del Robot.

Star Wars Battlefront 33% off on Origin as Force Awakens nears

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST

What will you be doing this weekend? EA is hoping some of you will watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then follow the hype train straight to Star Wars Battlefront. From now until December 21 at 10 AM Pacific, both the Standard and Deluxe Editions of Battlefront for the PC are on sale for 33% off.

The expensive, aka Ultimate Edition (bundling everything along with the Season Pass) is discounted by only 25% off, which sort of makes sense since the Season Pass is still at full price with the first DLC pack still a ways off.

Will the price drop tempt PC gamers on the sideline? We're not sure, but this deal does match a Battlefront sale GameStop was already running last week, and from the tiny fraction of sales numbers we can see, the game did OK at $40.

Perhaps the movie release will lift the server population in the near term, or perhaps we'll be back in a few months with another Battlefront deal post. Tune in next time!

Review: Nuclear Throne

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

Nuclear Throne is not a game for people who get frustrated easily.

My first few hours spent with this top-down shooter from Super Crate Box and Ridiculous Fishing developer Vlambeer didn't go well. I struggled with aiming and, as a result, ammo conservation. I had a hard time predicting patterns well enough to evade attacks. Levels felt overloaded with danger, almost as if an algorithm forgot it was generating levels for humans, not infallible beings. And, most irritating of all, I kept ending promising runs with a single tragic slip-up that stole all my health. (Usually an explosion.)

As much as I enjoyed the general idea of Nuclear Throne, early on, it just wasn't clicking.

Bayonetta is in Super Smash Bros.

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 08:18 AM PST

Bayonetta, a character many fans have wanted in Super Smash Bros., has just been officially announced for the game! Bayonetta was the #1 choice in Europe's Smash ballot, and in the top five in North America. In fact, she was #1 worldwide!

Her playstyle is combo-oriented, with many multi-hit moves, even smashes. If players press and hold attacks, she will start to use her guns at the end of the move. Her down special is the one that has me the most intrigued: it's a counter, but instead of just countering, she uses Witch Time to slow the opponent. If she triggers Witch Time late, Bat Within triggers with separate properties!

Damn this game just got a lot sexier! Bayonetta is "targeted" for a February release date, alongside Corrin.

Cloud available today for Smash Bros.

Cloud from Final Fantasy VII will be available in a few hours for both Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U along with his Midgar stage. The two new pieces of DLC come together at $5.99 per console or $6.99 for both versions.

Cloud's alternate costumes that leaked were also confirmed.

Fire Emblem's Corrin coming to Smash Bros.

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 08:10 AM PST

Corrin, from the upcoming Fire Emblem Fates, is joining the roster of Super Smash Bros. Now, before you freak out that another swordfighter is joining the game, be aware that most of Corrin's attacks don't actually use his sword. Corrin turns into a dragon for most of his special moves. He also has a tipper, so take that, Marth!

He can also be a she! Just like Robin and Wii Fit Trainer, both genders are available as costumes. Corrin will be available next February.

Sorry, Chrom.

Destiny's Oryx raid challenge is the hardest one to date

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

The seemingly final raid challenge has cycled in for Destiny's King's Fall. The first offering was Warpriest, last week was Golgoroth, and now, skipping Daughters entirely, it's Oryx's turn. I managed to down him three times today with the challenge intact, but it took some patience.

Simply put, 16 (or more) orbs of light need to detonate at once, which instantly brings Oryx down to 0% life. To do this, you'll need to go through four Ogre phases, leaving four orbs for each corner. That way on the fourth run you can stand in the orb's wake, blow all of them up, and meet in the middle for the last part of the fight.

For most players, this isn't that much different than what they've already been doing if they haven't been using the "No Knight" strategy, it's just more tedious. There are no other qualifiers for this challenge -- anyone can die for example -- but if anything goes wrong on any of the runs, it can spell instant doom and a wipe. Sure, you can go an extra phase if a bomb is accidentally destroyed by a Knight (hence "more" than 12 orbs), but it just creates more room for error.

Last call to claim your free Xbox games

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

We, the fine people at Destructoid, are here to help. If you call, we will answer. If you fall, we'll pick you up. If you're going to forget to download some Games with Gold, we'll post an article that acts as a pleasant reminder.

So, hey. You should go download those free Xbox games if you're a Gold subscriber, eh? The two you're in danger of missing are Knight Squad on Xbox One and Castlestorm on Xbox 360. Now there's no danger because you just got 'em if you want 'em.

If you want to get a head start on more free games, December 16 is when the Games with Gold calendar flips over and some new titles are gratis. Thief on Xbox One, and Sacred 3 and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising on Xbox 360 are up for grabs tomorrow. And, until the end of the month The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is also available.

It's tequila time! Watch Swery drink and explain inspirations for his games

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST

If you're going drinking in Osaka, Swery looks to be about the best tour guide you could ask for. If you want to know a little more about Swery's life and the inspiration behind his games, this video looks to be about the best tour guide you could ask for.

Over the course of 18 minutes, Swery leads the way through his stomping grounds, explaining the places and people who affect his life and career. A few highlights from this light-hearted jaunt around Osaka are Swery getting beat in an arcade at the first game he ever made, a conversation with the bartender who teaches Swery english, and a D4-like tequila time shot spree.

Steven and I are on a constant quest to find strawberry daquiris when we travel abroad. We've had no luck so far in Germany and Tokyo. We need to concoct a reason to get to Osaka, because I bet Swery has the hookup.

Review: The Bit.Trip

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

The Bit.Trip series holds a special place in my heart. With a wonderful blend of rhythm-based mechanics and arcade-style gameplay spanning various genres, the games are easy to pick up, quick to fall in love with, and yet incredibly difficult to master.

This compilation, aptly titled The Bit.Trip, marks the series' very first appearance on PlayStation consoles, featuring all six games in one neat little bundle. And thankfully, they play just as great on PlayStation as they did on the Wii all those years back.

Hideo Kojima reportedly forming new studio

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

According to Nikkei, game designer Hideo Kojima is forming his own studio.

That might seem like an obvious next move for the Metal Gear Solid creator now that he's officially out at Konami (the "vacation" has ended!), but I kind of like the idea of him saying "eff it," retiring early, and spending the rest of his days living it up in cinemas. That seems like his happy place.

Reportedly, Kojima is bringing along some of his old staff for this new venture and will debut his next game on PlayStation, pending final negotiations with Sony. Konami controls the Metal Gear property, so I think it's safe to say The Phantom Pain is indeed his farewell to the series.

After six years, Noby Noby Boy's Girl has completed her journey

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

Well this was sudden! We just heard last month that Noby Noby Boy's Girl had finally reached Pluto. Shortly after, she has already looped around and made her way back to Earth, ending her journey where it began. I figured it would take much longer. Maybe the Pluto milestone got people really excited to hop back into Noby Noby Boy to finally reach the end.

Upon returning to Earth, Noby Noby Boy's ending sequence was finally revealed for anyone still playing, featuring a special bonus level and a heartwarming letter written back in 2009 when the game was first released. The letter is really something, like discovering a buried time capsule. It ponders the question of how long it would take for the game to be completed. “Would it take one year? Three years? Or even ten years?” The answer was six years and some change, as Girl returned to Earth 2,489 days from the start of her journey.

Congratulations, everyone who played Noby Noby Boy! You helped contribute to this momentous event, no matter how small your contribution may have been! I know I didn't play as much as I would have liked, but I still helped a little bit. Now I think Girl has earned some well deserved rest after all those years stretching across the solar system.

Biker Mice from Mars game out now

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

Ah, the '90s. We were much younger back then. Some readers today might not have even been alive or sapient. Let me tell you something about the '90s. There were lots of cartoons. Some of them were good. Only '90s kids could possibly know that, am I right?

Even at the time, I remember thinking Biker Mice from Mars was a cynical ploy, manufactured by adults to appeal to kids with it's totally radical setup. I never actually watched it. Maybe I missed out on the "irreverent satire" the press release for this game describes.

From the looks of the screens, this plays like a Temple Run-esque behind-the-back runner, but on a bike. So instead of a runner, it's more of a biker... mice. From Mars.

It's out now on Android and iOS for free (with microtransactions) for those who hold the series more fondly in their hearts than I do.

Sultry shooter Bullet Girls 2 coming to the Vita

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

Remember D3's Bullet Girls? Well they're back, and just as not safe for work as before.

The publisher has announced that a full sequel is in development, and is set for the PlayStation Vita. In short, the series is basically a shooter mixed with some erotic elements. Don't watch the trailer at work! The odds of this getting localized are basically slim to none, as the first one never made it over either.

Tales of Berseria has a silly name, but it's still looking great

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

Tales of Berseria will launch next year on PS3 and PS4, Bandai Namco has confirmed. Accompanying the announcement is a new trailer, which actually gives us a hefty amount of gameplay, both in terms of combat and field exploration. It will start a female protagonist named Velvet as she exploreds the Midgand Sacred Kingdom.

I don't know what it is, but "Berseria" sounds especially ridiculous to me. I mean, "Zestiria" has a regal ring to it, "Xillia" sounds almost extraterrestrial in nature, but "Berseria" is the one that makes me giggle the most. Go figure.

Japan is getting a special Pokken Tournament controller for Wii U

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

When I played Pokken Tournament over in Japan, the first thing I noticed was the controller. It has a distinctive look and feel to it, and although it's not the most comfortable thing in the world, it works.

To celebrate the Wii U release of the game, it looks like Japan is getting a special home edition of said controller. It will launch on March 18 from Hori, and will go for 3,480 yen (roughly $28). If you don't want to shell out for it, you can use the GamePad, Classic Controller Pro, or Pro Controller. I...still want one.

Oh, and the official Japanese boxart is out, as well as a new trailer.

Mega Man 9 and 10 are on sale on Xbox Live

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

Odds are you own Mega Man 9 and 10, but if not, you can save a bit of cash this week. Right now, both games are being sold for $2.99 if you have Xbox Live Gold by way of the Xbox 360. They're normally $9.99.

If you haven't picked up 9 yet, do it. It's one of the best platformers I've ever played, as the level design is both amazingly old school and meticulously fine-tuned. 10 isn't bad per se, but it's not nearly as inventive or enjoyable. Still, it's absolutely worth three bucks.

Street Fighter V's next beta is free for all Japanese PlayStation Plus owners

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

Here's yet another cool promotion coming out of Japan.

The next Street Fighter V beta session, which runs from December 18-20, will be open for all PlayStation Plus subscribers. The catch? You'll need to be located in Japan. Sadly, even after fighting game website Shoryuken reached out for confirmation, they were told that this was "only announced for Japan" at this time.

The game is only a few months away though, and is still set for a February 16 release date.

Resident Evil Zero HD's Wesker Mode is everything I want out of an extra gametype

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster is shaping up to be a fine project, especially when it comes to its extras department. Wesker Mode swaps out Billy (but leaves Rebecca) for the titular villain, who has the superhuman powers that he exhibited in most of the series. In addition to increased melee capabilities he can also dash, and he looks like a ton of fun to play.

If the initial reveal trailer wasn't enough, here's some new footage from Capcom.

Final Fantasy VII Remake devs are getting help from the Kingdom Hearts team

Posted: 15 Dec 2015 12:10 AM PST

A new issue of Famitsu has spilled the beans on a ton of new Final Fantasy VII Remake details, and they're pretty juicy. In addition to focusing more on Biggs, Wedge, and Jesse, Square notes that you'll be able to fully explore Midgar, which should quell the fears of those of you who dread the "multi-part" format.

Square isn't saying how many volumes are planned yet, nor are they sharing info on online features, but the "main scenario" for the first part is currently completed. Also, they're getting help from the Kingdom Hearts team, the voice cast is expected to be the same as Advent Children, and Cloud's hallucinations will be more "meaningful" this time around.

All of that sounds pretty good if the "multi-part" format doesn't take months or years to complete, and we aren't gouged price-wise.

First hands-on with Crytek's newest game The Climb

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST

Is free solo climbing cool? I'm sure there's been some virality in its danger in the YouTube era, but we've had, what, Cliffhanger, which was more about guns and biceps than cliff hanging, and then the arbitrary opening Mission Impossible II?

Recreating a niche extreme sports doesn't quite feel like the surefire Wii Sports gambit that sold Nintendo's first weird-controller piece of hardware -- success it has failed to find again with the Wii U -- but Crytek's first full VR game, The Climb, is correct: climbing rock in virtual reality is fun.

Bungie introduces level boosts for Destiny after it said it wouldn't

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 10:36 PM PST

Aw here it goes!

For weeks now, Destiny dataminers have been hacking away at the game's code, looking for anything of note. Although they've found plenty of tertiary things, they figured out one huge addition -- paid experience boosts. The notion was quickly denied by Bungie, who noted that it was "just an experiment" and that it had no intention of introducing pay-to-win elements like that into the game.

Until it does, of course.

As of today, astute redditors have located the existence of "level packs," which have popped up on the UK PSN for a whopping £24.99 (!). There's one for each (!) class (Titan, Warlock, Hunter), and it comes bundled with a few extra items in addition to a level 25 instant boost (which was granted for Taken King collector's edition owners) and a subclass boost. This is quite the conundrum for Bungie. It probably wouldn't have even been that big of a deal if it hadn't promised they weren't going to be in, Overkill style.

The level 25 jump doesn't concern me much, it's the subclass boosts. Players who opt to pay will inherently have access to new abilities for PVP that another player otherwise wouldn't, unless they opt to grind. Gone are the days of "only" cosmetic microtransactions. The floodgates have been opened, and the water is expensive.

You can now buy Subclass boosters on the PSN for £24.99 [reddit]

Battlefield 4 The Legacy Operations DLC out today

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 09:00 PM PST

The latest Battlefield 4 patch rolls out today.

Consequently, the multiplayer servers will be offline for up to an hour on each platform. The PC version rolls out at 08.00 UTC, PlayStation 4 09.00 UTC, Xbox One 10.00 UTC, PlayStation 3 11.00 UTC, and Xbox 360 12.00 UTC.

The Legacy Operations DLC - which adds the remake of Dragon Valley - will also be available later... well, on current-gen and PC, anyway. (Xbox 360 and PS3 owners won't be getting the free DLC owing to the size of the map. Sorry guys).

The DLC was shaped by a community vote that took place almost a year ago, where Battlefield 4 fans were asked which map they’d like to see return the most, and the winning vote was the popular Battlefield 2 map Dragon Valley.

The DLC won't be auto-updated with the patch, so if you fancy it, head on over to your console's digital store and download it.

One-on-one rival battles have come to Guitar Hero TV

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

When it comes to Guitar Hero Live, the one song I kick arse at is "Everybody Talks" by Neon Trees. I know it’s not considered “rock enough” for a Guitar Hero game by some people, but they’re obviously just jealous of how good I am at it.

Now I can prove my cheesy pop-rock dominance, as FreeStyle Games has introduced Rival Challenges to Guitar Hero TV, the microtransaction-driven music channel portion of the game.

If you’re at least level 10, you’ll now be pitted against similarly-skilled opponents in a one-on-one battle. Twice during every 30-minute slot on a Guitar Hero TV channel you and another player will see each other’s profile cards and note highways side-by-side on the screen, much like the main game’s battle mode. The winner of the challenge will net an extra 100 XP, which is a pretty decent amount.

It seems like a nice way to mix up Guitar Hero TV, which can feel a bit repetitive after the fifth song or so. However, I would’ve much preferred the ability to choose the songs for myself. Being thrown against another player on a song you don’t like or haven’t heard before would be incredibly frustrating.

Another new feature is that once per day if you log in with zero ‘plays’ (the controversial currency used to play Guitar Hero TV songs on-demand), you’ll be given three of them for free.

Three free songs isn't really all that generous, making this a transparent ploy to get you to buy more plays when you’re done, but it’s better than nothing. Considering I don’t play GHTV that much and I have almost 60 plays, I don’t see this being a problem that affects too many people.

You can read more about the update on the Guitar Hero community blog.

The UK has been spared the last-gen port of Pro Skater 5

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST

[Update: Despite saying it wouldn't be released on Xbox 360, Pro Skater 5 has popped up on the Xbox Live Marketplace, costing £24.99. It isn't available on the PS3, so this might well be a mistake on Activision's part.

We've contacted Activision for clarification on what exactly is going on, and will update should we hear back from them.]

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5’s last-gen port will not be launching in Britain, despite being due for release elsewhere this week.

Talking to Eurogamer, Activision has said it was “not releasing in the UK on those platforms at this time”. The reasons for the decision aren’t made clear, but I bet not many people will be too upset by this news.

We don’t know how the last-gen port will fare just yet, but considering the mess of a current-gen release, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. When it launched for Xbox One, PS4 and PC earlier this year, Pro Skater 5 was derided as being buggy, half-baked, and overall sloppily developed instead of being to the quality the next major entry in a well-loved series really should be.

Developer Robomondo has a track record with sub-par skating games, having previously been behind the awful Tony Hawk: Ride, and the underwhelming Pro Skater HD.

My friends, the UK has possibly dodged the biggest bullet of the year!
