You can try Sword Coast Legends for free this weekend

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST

Sword Coast Legends didn't quite make it to the stars it was reaching for, but I'm still confident it'll get there eventually. Now that there's been a couple of content packs, adding in "playable drow elves, new skill trees, additional monster abilities, [and] character respec," I'll probably jump back in to check it out.

And this weekend, you can too! From December 17 to December 22, Sword Coast Legends and all if its content will be free-to-play. That should be just enough of time for one of you to build a Destructoid community level. Have fun!

Night Dive's Turok re-release hits PC this week

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST

I tried to play Turok once, and only once, back when I was still in grade school. My friend and I rented the game for N64 because 1) the box art was cool and b) he was into violent games. But shortly after getting back to my house, I got seriously ill. I've still only ever played the opening bit!

Night Dive Studios is bringing Turok back with a re-release on PC. The graphics have not aged well, even with enhancements, but perhaps I'll give it a proper chance. Dinosaurs holding guns? Pretty, pretty good.

A bunch of DualShock 4 controllers are on sale for Green Monday

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

Haven't heard of Green Monday? Well, it exists, and while it's no Black Friday or Cyber Monday, it's definitely an actual day where retailers attempt to hawk you more wares for "cheap." At Best Buy, we spot loads of console titles and accessories on sale, the most noteworthy of which are PS4 DualShock 4 wireless controllers as cheap as $40 and all variants are at $20 off.

For the most part, the gaming deals are scattered between Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, and GameStop. Best Buy has the aforementioned PS4 controllers along with decent deals on Razer gaming mouses. (Mice? Mices? ... how do you say 'gaming mouse' plural?)

Gamers who actually shop at Toys "R" Us (which has an excellent amiibo collection) should take note of the $100 gift card for $90 deal below. 5,000 units are available, and it was one of the more popular Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals this year.

It's the last day to get Bastion on PS4 and Vita for less than $3

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST

The Kid just rages for a while. He knows it's a fool's errand to try to rage forever. He's smarter than that. The Kid has already seen one Calamity and that's enough for a lifetime.

Come December 15, The Kid figured it'd be best for everyone if Bastion weren't priced so low anymore. "Just $3 is ridiculous," he thought. "Best to knock that back up to $15." Again, they can't rage forever. They might die trying.

The Kid didn't feel bad, either. They had their chance. The ground had already come to life before their very eyes. Now, The Kid was ripping it out from underneath their feet.

Play class-based Ghost in the Shell shooter now on early access

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST

That Ghost in the Shell shooter I keep talking about, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - First Assault Online (GITS:SAC-FAO for short), is finally playable in its Early Access period on Steam or through Nexon's launcher. It's five bucks to get in on the ground floor, but GITS:SAC-FAO will be free-to-play sometime next year if you want to wait for it.

The final release still plans to add new modes, maps, weapons, characters -- a lot of shit, basically. But the Early Access build is promising, "the core gameplay experience to be in place including several unique characters, three initial game modes (Team Deathmatch, Terminal Conquest, and Demolition), five maps based on iconic locations from the anime, many weapons, initial augment and weapon attachment systems and basic matchmaking and progression systems."

The newest DayZ update is more Game of Thrones than The Walking Dead

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

The latest update to DayZ, a game about surviving the zombie apocalypse, is sans zombies. Rather, developer Bohemia Interactive opted to focus on adding animals to this new version of the game -- some that may prove to be even more deadly than the undead.

Wolves are being added to DayZ as part of the predators update. They're sort of like zombies, but smarter, more agile, and they roam in packs. But cuter. There's some give and take.

To even the odds (kind of), bikes are also introduced. I'm no Lance Legstrong, but I don't think I could pedal away from an angry, hungry wolf.

By the way, alternate takes on that headline from the staff chat are: "The newest DayZ update is more The Grey than The Walking Dead," "The newest Day Z update is more Teen Wolf than The Walking Dead," and "The newest DayZ update is more AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO than URRRGHHGHGHG."

Nintendo rejected this Super Mario Bros. 3 PC pitch by Doom developer id

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST

John Romero of id Software fame just released this video of a Super Mario Bros. 3 PC port John Carmack and John Romero made to show Nintendo in order to get the license for the PC version. Nintendo would ultimately decline the offer, but id and company used the technology and wherewithal to create something of a classic in its own right, Commander Keen, which turns 25 today.

Very Quick Tips: MechWarrior Online

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

With MechWarrior Online hitting Steam, there are bound to be a lot of new pilots climbing into the cockpit for the very first time. But getting started might not be the easiest thing in the world. MechWarrior is a little more complicated than your typical online FPS, with plenty of quirks and eccentricities all its own. Add to that a hardcore playerbase that has spent the last three years learning these systems inside and out, and you might not receive the most welcoming introduction to the battlefields of the Inner Sphere.

This quick tips guide will hopefully help get new pilots up to speed and on their way to giant robot carnage as soon as possible.

Space epic Star Citizen hits $100 million in crowdfunding

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

The ambitious, multi-faceted space epic Star Citizen has hit a hell of a new milestone, crossing $100 million in crowdfunding. The project was just at $50 million one year and two months ago. A year before that, it sat at $15 million. Another year earlier, $3 million.

Which means that, despite some uncertainty around the game and its development, the rate of funding is just going up, whether its coming from large outside sources or devotees buying hangars full of $500 spaceships. And that might allay some of the uncertainty, because clearly the rug is not being pulled out from under the project, which continues to make absolute bank -- money that could go towards it achieving all of its lofty goals.

At the time of writing, 1,092,904 "Star Citizens" have raised $100,169,399.

This new Pokemon is a fire and water type

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

We got our first glimpse of Volcanion so long ago, via a leak, that today's official announcement from Nintendo initially felt brand new to me. The latest Mythical Pokémon is a fire/water type -- the first of its kind -- should be obtainable in an upcoming distribution event before long.

"This Pokémon uses fire and water to create steam within its body, expelling explosive shock waves and scalding steam from the arms on its back. Volcanion's power is said to be so great it can destroy an entire mountain, gouging out the earth and changing the shape of the land!"

Yet another reminder that perhaps kids shouldn't be trusted with these almighty beasts.

Unravel looks like a wonderful platforming adventure

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST

Unravel is probably on your radar by now, but if it isn't, I've got a trailer for you!

This is a puzzle-platform game from Coldwood Interactive and EA about a tiny yarn character who ventures out into the big wide world. Yarny can unravel himself to latch onto branches, create tightropes, and do other things of that nature. The twist? There's only so much yarn in his body. He'll have to use it economically, or else he will get stuck, unable to continue his journey.

Destiny with all the DLC is cheaper than just The Taken King add-on today

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

As we inch toward the end of the year, retailers keep doing all they can to turn their existing inventory into profit. Destiny is the beneficiary of the holiday sales creep today, as the legendary edition of the game is on sale for half the normal asking price.

Until the end of today, Amazon has Destiny: The Taken King - Legendary Edition marked at $29.99 on PS4 and Xbox One. That version of the game comes with the base Destiny experience, The Taken King, The Dark Below, and House of Wolves. For comparison's sake, The Taken King alone retails at $40.

Exactly one year ago today, this sale wouldn't have been much to write home about. Now, it's a fantastic deal. That's not only because it contains more content. In the past year, Destiny has somehow transformed from a mediocre game to a fantastic one in the public consciousness. It's a weird and unlikely transformation, but good on Bungie for turning the ship around without the need to release a sequel.

PlayStation Vue is off to a good start, but it needs a bit more time

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

"Cut the cord."

You've seen the pitch a million times. While it will take a lot more time until all of the Adam Levine-loving, Voice-watching watching baby boomers truly cut enough cords to make online television really take off, many companies are keen to get you to drop your cable service right now.

The latest kids on the block this year are Sling TV, and now, Sony with PlayStation Vue, which just hit Amazon Fire TV in addition to the launch platform of the PS4. After using both of them for some time I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but they have a little ways to go yet.

MechWarrior Online is aiming for the stars on Steam

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

Longtime readers of the site, especially folks that read my c-blogs and recap articles before I became a staff writer, know that I have a weird, on-again, off-again relationship with MechWarrior Online. It's a game I want to love, but frequently don't. One that I'll play for months at a time, get fed up with some problem or another, and quit in a huff -- only to come back a few months later to start the cycle all over again. It's very Sookie and Bill, only with less sexy vampires and more swearing at a keyboard.

This weekend MWO celebrated it's launch on Steam with an event designed for its biggest fans. Over 100 mech-head diehards gathered in Vancouver at PGI's studio to commiserate, gently trash-talk longtime rivals, and find out exactly where the game is heading. I was there too, and had the opportunity to sit down with PGI president Russ Bullock, and MWO's creative director Bryan Ekman, and finally ask them some of the questions I've had on my mind during the past three years of my kiss-kiss-slap-slap affair with stompy robots.

Don't spend too much time underwater in Fallout 4

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

Lavonicus over on Reddit has done a great civic duty for all Fallout 4 players -- he spent over 30 hours exploring the depths of every major body of water in the game. The experiment was mostly fruitless though, because outside of a hint of a possible DLC bit, there isn't much there to find. Now you don't have to do it though!

You can read the full 113-image post, and the map below highlights the more interesting parts if you want to check them out for yourself.

The Last Remnant lives on in portable form thanks to the Cloud

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

Square Enix develops so many games, it's hard to keep up. I try my best though, and I distinctly remember The Last Remnant, and despite its lackluster elements, the title screen is still burned in my memory.

If you live in Japan and want to relive the experience, it's now on iOS and Android for 2,000 yen (roughly $16). It's an actual no-frills port, mostly because it runs on Cloud-based technology. Unfortunately, that means you'll have to stay connected to the internet to play it.

If you're curious, the game isn't lost to the ether otherwise -- it's still on Steam for $9.99.

Final Fantasy Explorers will have two new summons

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

Final Fantasy Explorers, when it's released next month overseas on 3DS, will simultaneously revere its classic roots and look to the future. There will be 12 summons (Eidolons) to fight, including fan favorites like Diabolos, Shiva, and Leviathan -- but two of them will be new.

This includes the poisonous Dryad, and the mysterious Amaterasu, both of which look the part. The coolest thing about their appearance is that you can battle stronger versions of these bosses after the main story, with different mechanics. Get a look at everyone in the gallery below.

Fable Legends open beta delayed until spring 2016

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 02:15 AM PST

Well, Microsoft was true to its word when it said more info was "coming soon" regarding Fable Legends.

As stated on the official site, the beta has been delayed until spring 2016. That's...the beta period, so the game will likely be much farther off, possibly the end of the year. As a PC and Xbox One simultaneously release with cross-play, it would probably make a nice holiday game.

100,000 more people will get into the closed beta as a result in the next few weeks. I can wait for this one -- it looks fun, but Fable has burned me many times. Remember the Kinect game and the XBLA hack-and-slash project?

Microsoft is tired of you asking for Rare Replay on Wii U

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

It appears as if Minecraft Wii U and Phil Spencer have opened the floodgates.

Given that the Microsoft-owned Minecraft is coming to Nintendo's newest console and Spencer recently mused on the idea of bringing GoldenEye back, a lot of fans have taken to Twitter to quiz the publisher on future possibilities. So much so that Microsoft has issued a statement, saying that "we have no information of any games coming to the Wii U other than Minecraft."

But really Rare -- is Rare Replay coming? Maybe Microsoft will rise up to save the Wii U in its twilight era before the launch of the NX? Probably not, but a man can dream.

As for GoldenEye, it likely won't happen. Time and time again Rare has essentially noted "we gave you Perfect Dark, which is like, our original better version anyway." And every time, I've disagreed. I'd love to see a true return of GoldenEye one day with split-screen and online capabilities.

Cave's newest shooter is out now on iOS

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 01:30 AM PST

DoDonPachi IchimeBanchou lives!

As Cave's latest experiment, this brand new game is a free-to-play shooter for iOS, and it's actually live right now internationally, including in the US. It's a bit hard to find though as the listing is relatively cryptic, with no actual US title available.

To find it, you can either follow this link here, or type in "Cave Co., Ltd" in the App Store, click a game, then click the company name, and find it on the list at the bottom. There doesn't seem to be any microtransactions or IAP involved -- rather, the game is supported by ads. Finally, menus are translated, but the game as a whole is not.

Yakuza: Kiwami continues to look great

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

Every time I see footage for Yakuza: Kiwami, I just want to replay the first game again. It's a shame that we never got the PS3 or Wii U HD remakes, but I'd settle for a worldwide release of this one, as it seems like the best version of the game yet.

Unfortunately, there are no current plans to localize Kiwami outside of Japan. My guess is Sega will be judging the sales of Yakuza 5, which released just last week, first.

Microsoft: 'We know there's a lot of demand for a Minecraft amiibo'

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST

Now that Yacht Club Games has proven that it is possible to engineer a third-party amiibo, pretty much every publisher that has a Wii U or 3DS game is asked about creating one.

The latest publisher is Microsoft, who has even acknowledged said demand very recently. Minecraft team member Helen Zbihlyj, in response to a fan on the official Microsoft Studios site, stated, "we do know that there's a lot of demand for a Minecraft amiibo - no idea if we'll get one."

I wonder how the Shovel Knight rollout will play out. It's launching in Europe this month, and in January in the US. Yacht Club recently told me that there's going to be plenty of stock, so I'm hopeful from a consumer point of view -- but sales and future viability is another matter entirely.

Though he didn't go into the details of what the new project entails, he did confirm that though some team members are staying on to continue working on Star Wars Battlefront, he has moved onto the next Battlefield instalment.

The ESRB has rated Super Mario Galaxy for Wii U

Posted: 13 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

If an ESRB rating found by Nintendo Life is to be believed, it looks like Super Mario Galaxy is coming to the Wii U.

Don't get too excited, because it's more than likely that this won’t be a remake or an HD remastering. If it was, it would’ve been given its own separate rating through the ESRB, much like Wind Waker HD. As it is, this listing includes both the Wii and the Wii U, which suggests it’s going to be released on the American eShop instead.

The Wii U is already backward compatible with Wii games, so I’m not entirely sure how much of a demand there is for a digital release of Super Mario Galaxy. But it’s coming nonetheless, and at least it means you can get rid of the box to save some space?

As this isn’t an official announcement, there aren’t any release dates available. It would be a nice way to bring a close to 2015 though, so my guess is that it’ll hit the American eShop by the end of the year.

An ESRB Rating of Super Mario Galaxy for Wii U Has Been Spotted [Nintendo Life]

If an ESRB rating is to be believed, it looks like Super Mario Galaxy is coming to the Wii U.

Rating boards like the ESRB and PEGI are usually a pretty good way of telling what games are coming before they’re announced. For example, we found out weeks before its official confirmation that Minecraft was coming to the Wii U.

It’s worth mentioning this won’t be a remake or an HD remastering, otherwise it would’ve been given its own separate rating through the ESRB, much like Wind Waker HD. As it is, this listing includes both the Wii and the Wii U, which suggests it’s going to be released on the American eShop instead.

SHODAN is back for System Shock 3

Posted: 13 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST

Just in case you missed it, System Shock 3 was not-so-subtly teased by OtherSide Entertainment last week. It’s unrelated to the work going on at Night Dive Studios, who is currently working on a remake of the first game; OtherSide’s entry is a brand new, bona fide sequel to the cult classics.

While the studio is helmed by Tim Stellmach, who designed the first System Shock, OtherSide is still a fairly new and unproven studio making the follow-up to one of the best-received games of all time. That gives people a pretty valid reason to be dubious about the game, if you ask me. That cynicism is even more valid when you remember that we don’t have any gameplay, screenshots, or even concept art available at the moment.

What we do have now is a teaser confirming that SHODAN, the megalomaniacal rogue AI of the first two games, is back, and she sounds creepier than ever.

Her announcement was tweeted out alongside the official confirmation that OtherSide is indeed making System Shock 3. Apparently the teaser site that had “SYSTEM SHOCK 3” written in great big letters simply wasn’t blatant enough?

There currently aren’t any announced platforms or release dates for System Shock 3, but I’m sure OtherSide will be talking more about the game soon.
