Experience Points .28: Pokemon Red/Blue Posted: 12 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome. This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time. This entry is all about Pokémon Red and Blue. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments! |
Gearbox is opening a new studio in Quebec Posted: 12 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST Mere days after Bethesa revealed plans to establish a satellite in Montréal, Gearbox Software has followed the Fallout developer's lead, announcing a new studio in nearby Québec City, Canada. The Duke Nukem: Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines maker is already hiring for the new location, which will be co-headed by former Skylanders artist Pierre-Andre Dery and Sebastien Caisse, a business specialist and writer formerly of Québecor Media and Squeeze Animation. If you're curious as to why game companies are flocking to Québec, well, the local government provides tax incentives that make the province an attractive place for game studios to set up shop. |
Halo 5 is getting advanced control options Posted: 12 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST A legitimate reason to use a Christopher Walken header image? Today is a good day. There's more to next week's update for Halo 5: Guardians than Forge mode, maps, and REQs. The game is also expanding its control options. You'll be able to adjust the look acceleration and the inner and outer dead zones, as detailed in this blog post by 343 Industries. Look acceleration affects how long it takes to hit max look speed while holding the analog stick all the way in one direction. If you liked the feel of Halo 5's multiplayer beta, drop this setting down to "2." The default is "3," which "was done in part to help you make large aim corrections a bit faster." The inner dead zone is the small area where the analog stick's center position ignores input. It can be adjusted to better prevent the camera from drifting. Similarly, the outer dead zone can help with slow turn ("when you are applying 100% input on the look stick but not reaching top look speed"). Lastly, there's The Dead Zone. It's one of the better Stephen King film adaptations. Advanced Controller Settings [Halo Waypoint] |
First footage of Yakuza 6 looks just wonderful Posted: 12 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST I may knee-deep in Yakuza 5 at the moment, but it's never too soon to start getting pumped for the next entry in the series. That would be Yakuza 6, which Sega unveiled at Tokyo Game Show this year and plans to release exclusively for PlayStation 4 sometime next autumn. You know, in Japan. Who knows how long the game will take to come west (if it ever does), but it sure does look pretty. |
Splatoon's festive Splatfest is naughty vs. nice Posted: 12 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST I've missed the last couple Splatfests, but game of the year nominee discussion has me in the mood to get back into Splatoon. The next event is a good one, too. It's team naughty vs. team nice! The 24-hour battle begins Friday, December 18 at 9:00pm Pacific. So, something fun to do for those of us who aren't seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening day. I wonder what "naughty" and "nice" art the Miiverse community has whipped up. |
Nominees for Destructoid's Best PS4 Game of 2015 Posted: 12 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST The PlayStation 4 has seen its share of ups and downs in 2015, from the wonderful Bloodborne and unexpected Until Dawn to the disappointing The Order: 1886 and delayed Uncharted 4. It could have been a lot better, but it just as certainly could have been much, much worse. Still, big-budget exclusives aside, PS4 owners had no shortage of quality games to spend time with this year, including everything from blockbusters on the scale of Metal Gear Solid V to smaller, lesser-known gems like OlliOlli2, there was something for everyone, no matter your disposition. Here are Destructoid's nominees for Best PS4 Game of 2015... |
TowerFall Ascension hits Vita next week Posted: 12 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST TowerFall Ascension is such a treat for local arena game fans. It's even better with the Dark World expansion, which is worth getting for the fantastic new co-op levels alone. Both are about to arrive on PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV (anyone else recently buy one for $20?). TowerFall Ascension ($14.99) and Dark World ($9.99) will hit Vita on Tuesday, December 15. If you own them on PS4, you won't have to pay again. There's Cross-Buy. Multiplayer is handled via ad hoc wireless, so make plans to invite your PS Vita-owning buddies over. Existing players with TowerFall save data on PS4 may want to hold off for the time being -- there isn't support for cross-platform saves yet, but that's coming in a patch "shortly." There aren't plans for a PlayStation 3 port, according to designer Matt Thorson, but if you're desperate for something to play on that system, you've got Yakuza. Nominees for Destructoid's Best PC Game of 2015 Posted: 12 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST The personal computer ("PC," to those in the know) is always good for a clutch of unexpected surprises and in 2015 it was no different. There heavy hitters are there, from Metal Gear to The Witcher. But there is also an unexpected legitimate challenger in the crowded MOBA arena in the form of Heroes of the Storm. Or two novel pieces of interactive fiction in Her Story and The Beginner's Guide. Downwell brought the Game Boy to PCs. Invisible Inc. manages to find the correct point where stealth and strategy complement each other perfectly. There's flat out fun in Borderlands' humorous adventure or Rocket League's car soccer. Soma and Undertale appear to be some of the most moving games of this year. |
Killer Instinct is getting its own amiibo-like toy line Posted: 12 Dec 2015 12:45 AM PST Killer Instinct Season 3 is still in development, but that hasn't stopped the team from adding in a few more tweaks and extras along the way. One of the biggest upcoming changes is the addition of a Shadow Jago figure, that will essentially function as a toys-to-life/amiibo unlock for the core game. This six inch figure will be limited to 5,000 units, but it'll come with a code that unlocks a new costume for $34.99 -- if you're interested, you can buy it here. Other characters are coming in the future, including Jago, Spinal, Hisako, Sabrewulf, and Fulgore. Shadow Jago [Killer Instinct] |
PlayStation Europe's buy one, get one free sale isn't as good as it looks Posted: 11 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST You may have noticed that Sony is currently running a buy one, get one free sale on the European PlayStation Store. At first glance it looks pretty sweet, with some fairly recent releases included in the deal. Unfortunately, all is not as it seems As commenters on the blog post announcing the deal and the folks over at Gearnuke have pointed out, some of the games included have had a significant price hike in the last few weeks. Using PSPrices, it’s clear to see that The Last of Us Remastered, Saints Row IV: Re-Elected & Gat out of Hell and Zombie Army Trilogy have risen from their standard price of £39.99 to £44.99. Meanwhile, The Order: 1886 shot up by £10 from £34.99 to £44.99. Raising the price of a game just before putting it on a discount is scummy and, unfortunately, all too common practice. It lets publishers advertise a bigger discount without having to drastically lower their prices, and unaware customers may assume they’re getting a better deal than they actually are. So just keep in mind that while it may look like you’re getting a free game, depending on what you buy you may end up paying a raised price for one to cover the cost of the other. Tekken 7: Fated Retribution announced, the first new character is Street Fighter's Akuma Posted: 11 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST Tekken 7: Fated Retribution has just been announced at The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2015’s grand finals. Fated Retribution will be released first in arcades, and will include new characters, outfits, items and stages. That all sounds pretty cool but still fairly standard for an updated version of a fighting game. But then you find out who the first new character is, and things get a bit interesting. Up top you can see the trailer shown at the tournament, and it confirms that Street Fighter’s very own Akuma will be entering the fray. Considering he isn’t in Street Fighter V, his presence in Tekken is exciting. Maybe Tekken X Street Fighter isn’t that far off now? We currently don’t know the launch date for Fated Retribution. There’s also no confirmation about whether it will ever find its way to consoles, but I’d be very surprised if it didn’t. I suppose we’ll be hearing a lot more about it very soon! |
Be sure to grab Giants: Citizen Kabuto for free on GOG.com Posted: 11 Dec 2015 03:00 PM PST GOG.com is ending its Big Winter Sale with a free game. And it's a rather good one, at that! For the remainder of the site-wide sale, Giants: Citizen Kabuto is free to claim and keep. This game is part third-person action, part real-time strategy. Originally released in 2000, it centers on three races vying over an island floating through space. One faction uses guns, another wields magic, and the other is a giant creature. Pretty interesting premise, even in 2015. You'll have until December 13 at 5:59am Pacific to grab your copy. That's when the sale ends! |
