Fable Legends still nowhere to be found this year, even the beta

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 03:00 PM PST

So, Fable Legends, guys. Where is it?

Initially it was slated as a Fall 2015 title, but the beta is nowhere to be found, much less the finished product. Game Informer reached out to Microsoft to get some answers, and they really didn't learn a whole lot outside of the fact that it's still on track. According to Microsoft, we'll learn more "in the coming weeks," including beta access info. So...that's something, I guess!

Now that the series has just dropped its pretenses of being the be all, end all of RPGs, I'm hoping that Legends ends up being a decent multiplayer experience. Take your time, Microsoft.

Tripwire Interactive talks Killing Floor 2 on PS4

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST

I guess this one slipped by me during PlayStation Experience. Tripwire Interactive is starting to produce videos about Killing Floor 2's PlayStation 4 port. It's still off in the distance, but it's a good sign that they're starting to talk about the this officially since there's been relative radio silence since the port's announcement.

While at PSX, I took a look at the game running on the PlayStation 4, and it's shaping up nicely. The framerate isn't locked right now so it's in the range of 20-60, but it's still being optimized. I'll probably stick to the PC version, but I'm curious to see if there will be Sony-exclusive characters. I'd like to shoot Zeds as Nathan Drake, please.

Oh, and the best part of this is Tripwire's Vice President Alan Wilson's incredibly dark eyebrows. Enjoy.

Project Phoenix Kickstarter, slated for 2015, pushed to 2018

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 01:10 PM PST

Well, this is bad news.

Project Phoenix, a game from a dream team of JRPG developers, was initially gunning for a 2015 date based on their initial Kickstarter predictions, but now they are aiming for 2018. That's quite the leap! The problem stems from a programmer who was previously developing other projects, and still hasn't been able to join the project full-time.

There is also a "no refund" sentiment going around too. According to the team, "To initiate refunds is to give up on the project since there would be no money left to complete it." I definitely get that people will be angry and want their money back, but that's part of what you're gambling on with Kickstarter.

These days, I don't pledge unless I'm ok with a late release.

This Psychonauts making-of is a fun look at early Double Fine

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 12:40 PM PST

After hearing that Double Fine was crowdfunding Psychonauts 2, the first thought to pop in my head was "Will there be another documentary?" 2 Player Productions did such a remarkable job capturing the studio's work on Broken Age and other projects. I'm desperate for more.

They're back at it, already, with a Psychonauts retrospective video series called The Color of the Sky in Your World. All three parts are free on YouTube.

Beyond covering the game itself, there's amusing archival footage from the studio's early days. Part one has talk of junkies, exploding toilets, and love at first email. Part two has so-infuriating-you-have-to-laugh quotes from Psychonauts focus groups. Part three? I'm just now digging in!

Kitase speaks about Final Fantasy VII Remake's 'multi-part' format

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST

Last weekend, at PlayStation Experience, Square Enix showed the first gameplay for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, and (according to our comments) people either shat their pants in gleeful excitement or disappointed rage. When news came out that the game would be 'multi-part' (which I assumed meant episodic, but could mean multiple games as well), those same people either nodded their heads understandingly, or broke the three discs from the original game in righteous fury.

I think it's safe to say that this remake is going to be as divisive as everyone's thought for the past 19 years.

Yoshinori Kitase, director of the original and producer of the remake, has clarified a bit about the choice to go multi-part:

One thing that we wanted to be clear about during this weekend to accompany the new trailer was the scale of this project. We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that you’d share our vision for what we want to deliver. The biggest reason why we haven’t done a remake until now is because it’s a massive undertaking to reconstruct FINAL FANTASY VII from the ground up with the current technology. Producing a proper HD remake of FINAL FANTASY VII that maintains the same feeling of density of the original would result in a volume of content that couldn’t possibly fit into one instalment.

First of all, Kitase, installment has two l's, c'mon. Secondly, yeah, makes sense. If that recent trailer is indicative of the entire game, you're going to be watching millions of dollars burn during every hour or so. He also states that the team "would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of FINAL FANTASY VII. We knew none of you would have wanted that."

Would you have wanted that? Would you?

Let's watch robots build Steam Controllers

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

Ever wonder how controllers are made? Valve has put out a fascinating behind-the-scenes video showing the hard-working Aperture robots (yes, really!) that assemble Steam Controllers.

It lacks the minutia of something like How It's Made -- which I totally get; the Internet is an impatient place -- but there is an additional nugget of insight for those of us who would like to know more:

"To achieve our goal of a flexible controller, we felt it was important to have a similar amount of flexibility in our manufacturing process, and that meant looking into automated assembly lines," writes Valve. "It turns out that most consumer hardware of this kind still has humans involved in stages throughout manufacturing, but we kind of went overboard, and built one of the largest fully automated assembly lines in the US."

PaRappa the Rapper 2 hits PS4 next week

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST

Sony has begun selling PlayStation 2 games on PlayStation 4 with Trophies and 1080p support. After that initial batch of titles, PaRappa the Rapper 2 is up next. It'll be available on Tuesday.

It's unknown exactly how much this will cost -- again, your old PS2 discs aren't compatible with your PlayStation 4 -- but it'll surely be either $9.99 or $14.99 in line with prior re-releases.

I've somehow never played the sequel, despite liking the original game, so this is exciting. After watching footage of it to get in the spirit, I'm now hungry for burgers (but not noodles!). Fingers crossed that there aren't any weird issues with latency.

Windows 7 now supports the Xbox One wireless controller adapter

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

The Xbox One controller is terrific enough that I've considered dropping $25 on one of those wireless adapters for PC so I can use it beyond just Xbox gaming. But I haven't. Not yet!

I'm still on Windows 7, despite Microsoft's continual prompts to upgrade, and the adapters are for Windows 10. Thankfully, that changes today -- Windows 7 and 8.1 are now supported as well.

These things are temporarily out of stock on Amazon, but so long as I'm there, I might as well buy some Nerds Rope in bulk to hand out in place of actual coal this Christmas. That would be fun.

Lightning Returns PC port up to 28% off at launch

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST

Today, Square Enix's PC port of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII-3 finally arrived. The game was basically unavailable for pre-order (which is rather weird), leading some of us to think the title may get delayed, but alas our speculation was proven incorrect as the game has now released with a week-long launch deal.

Most authorized retailers will have the standard 10% off, but at Green Man Gaming, you can stack the site's usual coupon code, making the game only $14.

Review: Hearthstone: League of Explorers

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST

Blizzard is doing a great job of keeping Hearthstone players invested. In addition to the typical daily quest, weekly Tavern Brawl, and Arena schemes invented to reward people with new decks on a constant basis, it has also delivered some wonderful single-player adventures.

Curse of Naxxramas and Blackrock Mountain were not only ingenious ways to provide guaranteed cards to the playerbase, but they were actually really fun homages to classic Warcraft lore. The League of Explorers is more of the same, and I'm okay with that.

Nominees for Destructoid's Best Wii U Game of 2015

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

As much as the Wii U isn't the runaway commercial success Nintendo would like it to be, and as much as it's more of a first-party machine than anything else, it remains one of my favorite consoles in recent memory. The game releases are slowing down, but when they're good, they're real good.

This was a memorable year for Nintendo fans thanks in large part to titles like Splatoon, an original IP in a genre the company isn't known for, and Super Mario Maker, which brings to life something gamers have dreamed about for decades. It was also the year we got mermaid Yoshi.

Knowing my fellow Destructoid writers, I have a decent idea of which game will ultimately win, but you could make a reasonable case for any of these nominees.

Nintendo files patent for what might be the NX's controller

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

Nintendo has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an oblong controller that features a full touchscreen. As rumors heat up surrounding the NX, Nintendo's next piece of hardware, we're left to wonder if this is the vision the Japanese platform-holder has for its controller.

The patent, which was found on FreePatentsOnline by a NeoGAF user, was filed in June of this year and just published today. We have independently discovered the patent's application and the actual patent on the United States Patent and Trademark Office's site. These two pages confirm that the patent was definitely filed and it's not just an elaborate PDF uploaded to an external site.

Through 259 lines of descriptors, Nintendo's inventors explain how this controller will supposedly work. It's a lot to take in but the patent also offers an abstract summary which reads: "A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a first portion of the housing is formed in an elliptical form when viewing from the front. A display panel and a touch panel constitute one main surface of the first portion. Holes are formed in left and right end portions of the display panel and the touch panel, and two operation sticks are provided through the two holes. When viewing the first portion from the front, an area except key tops of the operation sticks becomes a display area."

While that's still not succinct, Nintendo also attached images that paint a much clearer picture. Below are graphics that offer a nice visual representation of the controller. It's just speculation at this point (even more so beyond if this is actually the NX's controller), but it's thought that this device might use Sharp's free-form display technology.

Nintendo won't confirm or deny any of this until the NX's proper reveal. There's no timeline on that, but it's rumored to be aiming for a 2016 release. The new year's right around the corner, so it likely won't be too much longer before we find out what all of this is about.

Valve says around 77,000 Steam accounts are hacked each month

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST

There's a real problem concerning Steam account security. For years, hackers have targeted Steam users to gain unauthorized access to their accounts and clear out their inventory of items. It's a familiar story, but it's an ever-growing one, too.

In a new post about security and trading, Valve reveals that the issue has gotten so bad that approximately 77,000 accounts are compromised each month. The trading system is mostly to blame, so Valve's employing security protocols to tighten up the ship.

As of today, Valve has three new measures for users who don't want to use two-step authentication. As described by Valve, they are:

  • Anyone losing items in a trade will need to have a Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled on their account for at least seven days and have trade confirmations turned on. Otherwise, items will be held by Steam for up to three days before delivery.

  • If you've been friends for at least one year, items will be held by Steam for up to one day before delivery.
  • Accounts with a Mobile Authenticator enabled for at least seven days are no longer restricted from trading or using the Market when using a new device since trades on the new device will be protected by the Mobile Authenticator.

The even easier answer would be to mandate two-step authentication from everyone. That's not a road Valve wants to go down, though. The company says that it thought about it (and doing away with trading altogether), but it wants to do everything it can to keep from putting steps between the users and their desired results. So, these three new measures are the compromise for people who are most at-risk because they won't protect themselves.

Where is our review for Devil's Third? No US review copies

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

Tomorrow, Devil's Third, a game years in the making, will be released in the US on Wii U, published by Nintendo. So where is all the fanfare, and reviews from US outlets? Nowhere, because Nintendo isn't sending out review copies for it. I mean, if you want to read up on it, there's plenty of good reviews out there from European and Japanese sources, as well as hours of gameplay footage, so it's not like you're in the dark. But this whole situation is just really odd.

Just today, I got a notification for the available Nintendo Download games this week, and although Fast Racing Neo, a third-party indie eShop-only game headlined it, Devil's Third, the only retail release and technically first party, was pushed to the very bottom into the "also" section. The hype was real at one point, and Bayonetta 2 seemed to work out well for them, so I guess they probably assumed this one would be a hit too -- only, it didn't pan out so well critically in Europe, hence the late to the game US shun-session. It could also partially be related to director Itagaki throwing Nintendo's own GamePad under the bus.

As for me, I picked up a copy by way of a street-date-breaking retailer, so I'm hacking away at the single-player component. Once I complete that, I'll wait to test out multiplayer on live servers tonight and tomorrow, hopefully bringing you a full verdict by the end of the day Friday. Since I have no embargo to abide by let's just say the campaign is super rough, but I'm holding out hope for multiplayer, which is supposed to be fun.

Telltale's Walking Dead characters are here for a limited time in Road to Survival

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

I tried out The Walking Dead: Road to Survival briefly. For me, the strategy combat was too shallow and the settlement aspect was too much like Farmville with zombies to hold my interest. Maybe you're different, though! Maybe you didn't delete Road to Survival after getting too many push notifications about it. Maybe this news is for you.

Starting today and running through January 31, characters from Telltale's take on The Walking Dead will be showing up in Road to Survival. Players will be able to meet up with and recruit Lee, Clementine, and Kenny. The trailer below notes Lee will be free for now, but would normally cost $10. Ten dollars! You could probably get the Telltale games for that much when they're on sale.

Hearthstone's 'Winter Veil' event is now underway

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

Blizzard has kicked off the Winter Veil event in Hearthstone, which basically amounts to a few tidbits of fanfare, and a sale. The gist is that through January 6, you'll be able to pick up 50 classic packs for $50, at $1 a pack. Newcomers can use this to boost their starter deck, and veterans will no doubt pick up tons of Arcade Dust to create other cards.

Stay tuned for my review of the League of Explorers DLC in the near future, now that the final wing is set to debut today.

Minecraft Wii U won't have GamePad inventory support, but it'll have a few other things

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

This week, we learned that Minecraft was coming to Wii U, and that it wouldn't feature GamePad inventory support -- basically, the only enticing mechanic that could have been in this port.

On the bright side, we now know that it will ship with Wii U Pro Controller support, voice chat, and the ability to use USB keyboards. It's...something, I guess, but there's still no compelling reason to pick this up so late in the game unless they patch in a unique feature.

Nominees for Destructoid's Best Xbox One Game of 2015

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

What are you looking for from a game on Xbox One? Do you want narrative excellence? Action perfection? Platforming prowess? Xbox One had all of that in spades in 2015.

That is to say, a lot of good games came to Microsoft's console this year. Some are true exclusives, some can be found elsewhere. Some require cutting-edge technology, some are very old. And, in the case of Shovel Knight, some just look very old.

It's that variation that really sums up Xbox One's year. When parsing through all the games to whittle down to a manageable list, our favorites were all significantly different from one another. These were the eight experiences on Xbox One that we found to be the very best of the best this year -- all unique in their own, special way.

Here are the nominees for Destructoid's Best Xbox Game of 2015:

Hyrule Warriors Legends will have a Tamagotchi-like 'My Fairy' mechanic

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

More details are coming out of the woodwork for Hyrule Warriors Legends, which is set to arrive in January in Japan, and March elsewhere. Evidently there will be a "My Fairy" system for Adventure Mode, which should give players a little something more to do than grind out objectives and maps. Now, you can raise a fairy character, feed it food, and have them contribute during combat with magic.

Additionally, a ton of new costumes have been confirmed, as well as a new Adventure Mode map called "The Great Sea." Wow, this is one hell of an expansion.

Nintendo Download: Fast Racing Neo, Devil's Third NOA snub

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

It's been a while, but this Nintendo Download week is most definitely highlighted by a few major third-party eShop releases. The Wii U headliner is Fast Racing Neo, which I highly recommend to any Wipeout or F-Zero fans out there. Also on Wii U is Devil's Third (tomorrow), Dinox, Jones on Fire, Medabots: Metabee (VC), Medabots: Rokusho (VC), and Sketch Wars.

I feel like I need to specifically note that Devil's Third was buried at the bottom of the list, even though it's the only retail game releasing this week and is technically first-party, published by Nintendo itself. It's really distancing itself from this one.

The 3DS is also in good shape with SteamWorld Heist. Plus, you can also choose from Terraria, Petit Novel Series - Harvest December, Radiohammer, and Rytmik Ultimate.

Have over 10 minutes of Gravity Rush 2 gameplay

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 02:45 AM PST

Yesterday, we learned a lot of new things about Gravity Rush 2, and now, there's gameplay readily available to ogle at for yourself by way of an official livestream. It's crazy how much more detailed the environments are compared to the first game, even this early on into development.

The entire art style looks a lot brighter, the character models are more interesting, and the environments are even grander in scale. I really dig the increased amount of aerial traffic, with all of the airships flying around. This is going to be a really long wait.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate's Jack the Ripper DLC coming next week

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 02:25 AM PST

Assassin's Creed Syndicate has been teasing its Jack the Ripper DLC for weeks now, but this is the first time we've had a really good gander at it. All told, it actually looks quite meaty, and the new story trailer isn't half bad.

It will be out next week on December 15 on consoles, as part of the Season Pass. PC owners will be getting it on December 22. If you don't own the Pass, it's sold piecemeal at $14.99. I hope this is just as wacky as the Assassin's Creed III "Evil George Washington" DLC.

Oculus Rift pre-orders come bundled with one of the best VR games

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 02:01 AM PST

If you want to sell VR, you need the ardent early adopters to show it off and the people they show it off to to be impressed. To that end, it helps to have some dang good software support, so it makes sense that EVE: Valkyrie will be included in all Oculus Rift VR pre-orders.

The EVE: Valkyrie Bundle is "exclusive to Rift," which I suppose means other VR headset owners will be buying it separately. It's also, "premiering on the Oculus platform," which means that tentative Q1 release date could be before the Vive's April 2016 launch. Or CCP is holding EVE: Valkyrie until the Rift, which will be "at least $300." PlayStation VR is also slated for the first half of 2016 and EVE: Valkyrie was playable on it at PlayStation Experience.

I recently played EVE: Valkyrie with a "near-final" version of the Oculus Rift VR and the space dog-fighting game is pretty neat and didn't make me ill in an hour of play. It did make me sweaty and pinch the bridge of my enormous god damn nose, though.

The coolest thing about VR space dogfights? The menus

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

EVE: Valkyrie has been one of the best full-game showings for virtual reality (versus novel tech demos, which are still my favorite use of VR) for a while now and as we edge towards the early 2016 wave of VR release (Rift, Vive, PlayStation VR), EVE: Valkyrie will be at the forefront, coming packed into Rift pre-orders to make sure the hardware has software to really sell it.

I sat with a near-final Oculus Rift on my head for over an hour with no signs of illness, just a sweaty face and pinched nose bridge (my nose is very big). And while the in-cockpit view EVE: Valkyrie remains an incredibly cool experience, one of my favorite things in the demo session was, oddly enough, the UI.

This is the first time I've felt closer to the Minority Report style control that the Kinect promised. Looking at a menu option from the space hub highlights it and, controller in hand, a button press selects it. This allows for cool looking HUD style menus that actually work as well as the typical menu format -- the only one that really works -- where your options are vertical or horizontal.

Of course someone modded Zelda into Fallout 4

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

For years, some of my favorite PC mods have been homages. It's easy to plan it out on paper, but much harder to actually sit down and create -- while I previously had time to do that in the past, I pretty much leave it to the pros now.

ClockWyrck has done quite a bit of work, and has crafted Zelda's Master Sword for us in Fallout 4, and alongside of Maartman's Zelda Pip-Boy, it looks right at home. Of course, the Majora's Mask moon mod brings it all together.

$20 Season Pass confirmed for XCOM 2

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 11:30 PM PST

Since XCOM 2 is a AAA game that exists, it is getting a Season Pass. This one, though, is a lot easy to swallow than the vast majority of publisher's "Mystery Passes" that I loathe so much.

2K Games is calling it the "Reinforcement Pack," which bundles three DLCs together for $20 (a Season Pass). In an odd twist of fate, the publisher is actually telling us what it has in it. It will be bundled with Anarchy's Children (soldier customizations, coming spring 2016), Alien Hunters (missions that involve tracking down a new alien, and new customization options, including weapons and armor, for summer 2016), and Shen's Last Gift (a new class, weapons, armor, mission, and customizations, also for summer 2016).

Since we know exactly what the Pass entails, it doesn't seem all that bad. Plus, XCOM games are pretty beefy out of the gate. In addition to all this, there's standard and deluxe editions ($60 to $75 respectively, the latter of which includes the DLCs).
