| Paper Mario is the next Mario Maker costume Posted: 01 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST Nintendo keeps adding new levels with unlockable costumes to Super Mario Maker, and I'm loving it. The next Mystery Mushroom outfit is based on Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. It's a little weird looking, but that's part of the charm. The costume's Event Course will be up on December 2 (in North America, and Dec. 3 in Europe). Until then, you should try to earn some of the prior outfits (Cat Peach, Mario Kun (!), Nekki, etc.) if you haven't done so already. The "Yoshi is Awesome!" course, in particular, is neat. | It's Shadow Jago's time to shine in Killer Instinct Posted: 01 Dec 2015 01:00 PM PST Shadow Jago has his own trailer for Killer Instinct, so you know what that means: he's nearly ready. The character will first be available on December 4, 2015, for folks who bought the Community Fund Bundle or Day One Xbox Live Gold. After a short window of exclusivity, he'll then be up for purchase from December 18 to January 15. Iron Galaxy hasn't given full pricing details yet. |
Make like Dig Dug and play music while you walk Posted: 01 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Have you ever wished that music played whenever you walked like in classic arcade games such as Dig Dug and Donkey Kong? Well, your wish has now been granted via an app called Medometer for iPhone, as seen above. I'm assuming the music shown in the video isn't included for copyright reasons, so you'll have to grab it from elsewhere. I'd test the app but for some reason it only works on iOS 9.1 and above, and I'd rather be dead than give up my ability to have John Cena show up randomly on my phone.
Jade Empire free on Origin, plus leftover PC game deals Posted: 01 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST We mentioned Jade Empire going free a month ago, but that was a premature oopsie by Origin. Starting today, this "On the House" freebie is now solidified. No payment info is required -- just add to cart, finish the checkout process, and the game is yours to own forever. Over at Green Man Gaming, they've launched a wave of PC game sales that are arguably better than the site's Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals. There's a new 22% off coupon that stacks with instant savings, making solid prices on titles like Killing Floor 2 and Cities Skylines Deluxe. GameStop actually has a few Cyber Monday leftovers, including Alien: Isolation at $12 and select Dark Souls titles at low prices.
Square only needs 15 seconds to sell Kingdom Hearts Unchained Posted: 01 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST Oh, I get to look at a cute cat and then walk through an elaborate pop up book? Dope. Sold.
Don't Starve: Shipwrecked DLC is out on Steam Early Access Posted: 01 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST Remember the Tim Burton-esque survival game Don't Starve? Its latest single-player expansion Shipwrecked has released via Steam Early Access for $4.99 (currently on sale for $4.49), and it looks pretty amazeballs as expected.
Machoke and Machamp don't have pants on, actually Posted: 01 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST I feel clowned upon. Damn near 20 years later and you want to tell me that Machoke and Machamp don't wear body-building speedos? That those perfectly placed black trunks are, according to Pokémon canon, just markings shared by all the species and not a respectful nod to the beautiful culture of watching Arnold kick Lou Ferrigno's ass in Pumping Iron? What does a Machop/choke/champ's skin even feel like are they just like plastic codpiece smooth like a Barbie or maybe a bit leathery like cranking off an old football? Wait, what -- what are the belts? They're wearing fucking belts those aren't even markings!? Machoke and Machamp Have a Deep, Dark Secret [Kotaku]
StarCraft II's Nova DLC is cheaper up front Posted: 01 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST Blizzard has opened pre-orders for StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops. Each of the three DLC packs will come with three story missions, and the first pack releases this spring. They'll be $7.49 each, or you can pre-purchase the complete bundle now for $14.99 and get an exclusive Nova Terra portrait. Everyone who buys all three packs -- whether up front in this bundle, or piecemeal at a later date -- will get a Covert Ops Ghost skin. As much as I've always been more of a Warcraft guy, I have to say, I adore the mission designs in StarCraft II. Varied, engaging stuff. Blizzard has only given us a light tease of what's to come in Nova Covert Ops, but after Legacy of the Void, I'm expecting good things. It's worth mentioning, though, that you won't need Legacy of the Void to play this upcoming DLC. In fact, you won't need any of the expansions. It'll work with the free Starter Edition of StarCraft II. Pre-Purchase Nova Covert Ops Today! [Battle.net]
Buzz Lightyear is a good look in Fallout 4 Posted: 01 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear has come to Fallout 4, which is probably beyond infinity from some perspective. This very spot on power armor can be put on Paladin Danse with a little bit or work (and a little download of the mod). The hood really does sell the ensemble. Don't forget it. Instructions are on the mod page (you'll have to manually give Danse the armor, but it's all pretty simple.
Lesbian weapon brawler Valkyrie Drive gets steamy trailer Posted: 01 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni, from Senran Kagura creator Kenichiro Takaki, is a game where girls kiss their partners to transform into battle weapons. It is coming to PlayStation Vita in Japan on December 10.
Street Fighter movie in black and white: 'Turns out it's actually a masterpiece?' Posted: 01 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST This tweet by Glitch Ritual reliably turned up several times a day in my Twitter feed over the holiday weekend and so I must share it. It's a pretty simple trick with VLC player's settings (not a specifically made black and white version) and it only looks that good because, hey, Street Fighter (1994) isn't all bad. It's got Kylie Minogue, after all. But that great composition and lighting, we can definitely give much of that credit to cinematographer William Fraker, who was also the director of photography on classics like Rosemary's Baby and Bullitt. And because we're talking movies: Bone Tomahawk, which one of you reminded me of in the comments last week, well, I went and watched it and it is good. A slow burn, traditional style western (in the vein of the Coen's True Grit) with a gruesome twist. It and Cop Car are two of my lowkey highlight releases from this year. Now I'm going to go back to writing Street Fighter noir fan-fiction.
Dtoid Designs: The Mario at the Movies Challenge Posted: 01 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST Dtoid Designs is back for the threequel and this time, it's personal. Originally for the third month of the contest I was going to go with a festive theme that celebrated the holidays. But then I remembered that Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out this month... and The Hateful Eight... and Krampus and Concussion and Joy and The Revenant and oh yeah, December is a great month for movies. Screw the holidays, let's celebrate the silver screen! For December, in honor of all the great awards-bait movies coming out this month, I'm issuing the Mario at the Movies challenge. Your objective is simple: pay tribute to a movie using Super Mario Maker. You can recreate your favorite scene or try to recreate the entire film in a single level. What you create is up to you, just make sure to have fun with it. To enter this month's contest, simply leave a comment below with your level ID, level name, and the name of the movie your level is inspired by. Entries must be received by December 15 and once your level has been accepted, you will get a message letting you know. Once again, please do not change or delete your level after it has been entered.
Dragomon Hunter: Anime MMO fan service by way of Germany and Taiwan Posted: 01 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST "Dragomon Hunter is one of the games where we've made the most changes [to appeal to the western audience]," Aeria Games' Product Marketing Manager Alexandre Bousquet tells me. That doesn't mean shaving the points off of spiked hair tips for use as beard stubble or turning onigiri into jelly donuts. The anime-styled MMO is currently in open beta for France and the United States, two western territories that are down with Asian-influenced animation. Even the name, Dragomon Hunter, is meant to spark the heart of anime fans. But, wait, why is a German company releasing an anime MMO in the USA and France?
Senran Kagura patch lets you kiss your anime girls Posted: 01 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST Senran Kagura: Estival Versus has been out in Japan (PS4, Vita) since early this year (we're supposed to get it soon). Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson's Kagura was just added as a DLC character as seen in the video above. But that's burying the lede. The 1.15 patch adds a new feature to Estival Versus: the opportunity to kiss the girls in the Locker Room with the "Kiss the Girls" feature. Best moisten up those winter-chapped lips. On the PS4 you can also solicit knowing glances via the camera. Senran Kagura: Estival Versus ‘Kagura’ DLC now available in Japan, ‘Kiss the Girls’ feature added [Gematsu]
| Bloodborne is offline for 'emergency maintenance' Posted: 01 Dec 2015 06:15 AM PST Yesterday, I logged into Bloodborne for another evening of futile attempts to beat the optional boss in The Old Hunters. It's a maddening exercise in patience. One slip-up, and you're out. Plenty of people are struggling with the DLC's first boss, too. (And the last! And those bastard sharks* guarding a cool weapon!) Little help? For the next couple of days, we're out of luck. From Software has temporarily disabled the game's online functionality, so you'll have to play either offline, or not at all. "We are currently conducting emergency maintenance on the game servers," reads a notice. "The maintenance should be complete within a few days. We will update you again once the maintenance ends." It's believed this is the result of an exploit enabling players to access The Old Hunters without paying for the content, as reported by Kotaku. Hopefully the fix won't take longer than expected. | You deserve to see Revolver Ocelot spinning his guns Posted: 01 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST [Photo] Now that 2015 is officially over and there's definitely no more massive holidays to attend or anything like that everyone's going to start getting all retrospective and I'm going to kick it off by waxing nostalgic for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Gosh, what good times those were, a few months ago, huh? Much better than Fallout 4. Anyways, I remembered this thing I forgot to share to all of you good little girls and boys per the holiday spirit and my community service sentence. Sure, young white guy in mom's living room spinning guns against a backdrop of motel art is fine. But I raise you the Revolver Ocelot motion capture actor Tornado Yoshida dressed up like Ocelot and spinning guns at this year's Tokyo Game Show (I didn't see him, damn!) |
| Star Ocean 5 has been delayed in Japan Posted: 01 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Despite the fact that tri-Ace was acquired by a mobile publisher, it seems as if it is going to keep on trucking with console games. One such project is Star Ocean 5, which will be published by Square Enix. It was originally set for a February 25, 2016 date for Japan, but it's just been delayed to March 31 of that same year. Apparently the reason for the delay was due to quality reasons. The game has already been confirmed for the PS3 and PS4 platforms, and will be localized at some point next year. | Mortal Kombat X's next batch of DLC will be revealed during The Game Awards Posted: 01 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST The Game Awards will air on December 3, and with it, a few reveals from some major studios. One such reveal involves WB's Mortal Kombat X, which already has new confirmed DLC, as told by a tweet from Ed Boon. I mean, everyone basically wants Baraka to happen at this point, but I hope we get more wacky additions like Jason and The Predator. I don't really play Mortal Kombat X all that much anymore, so some fresh new additions would probably bring me back in. Ed Boon [Twitter] |
| Big PlayStation Now update means 4 PS3 games you've already played Posted: 01 Dec 2015 04:45 AM PST Okay, okay, I don't want to presume. For the same reason that re-releases on current platforms are fairly innocuous (people miss stuff!), it's not at all a bad thing that five (four new) 2K games just joined PlayStation Now. Especially after the additional 100 last month.
It's just that it's still so unexciting, especially compared to a pretty solid service like PlayStation Plus. It could one day be the Blockbuster et al for some kid who can't afford loads of games, but I doubt those kids have screaming internet to support streaming games. So who knows. Maybe this is The Future and we just all don't know it yet. |
See how much faster Monster Hunter X loads on the New 3DS Posted: 01 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST Monster Hunter X was just released recently in Japan, and it's blowing sales expectations out of the water. It's only set for the 3DS at this time, but since the platform is now semi-fragmented by the "New" and "old" models, there is a slight difference in terms of load times. Nintendo themselves have actually broken down the difference, which is mostly insignificant (a few seconds) outside of the initial boot-up time, which takes only five seconds on the New model, and roughly 21 seconds on the old. It doesn't exactly scream "upgrade now," but it's definitely better on the newest iteration of the portable.
Here's how Rainbow Six: Siege's microtransactions work Posted: 01 Dec 2015 04:15 AM PST Since Ubisoft is Ubisoft, there's been some confusion as to how the microtransaction system works in Rainbow Six: Siege. Having experienced the retail version, I'll explain. Basically, everything that comes with a gameplay advantage can be unlocked by way of Renown, which is an in-game currency. You can earn points by watching tutorial videos, completing single-player missions, and playing online. This is primarily used to unlock Operators, which are the classes of Siege. Think of how unlocks for a typical shooter like Call of Duty function, and you'll get the gist. Except this time, instead of having to rank up to level 40 for example to pick a certain loadout or weapon, you can unlock your classes of choice from the start -- say, a medic or melee bruiser type. Prices start at 500 Renown as a base, and each time you unlock an Operator in a subset, its price goes up by 500 Renown (to 1000, 1500, and 2000 respectively). There's five subsets of Operators, with four in each class (20 in all). It sounds complicated, but it's not. I already have nine Operators, and I didn't get the game until the day before launch. More are set to come as DLC, but for now I don't feel like Siege's economy is drastically different from its competition. There are also weapon skins and boosters -- the latter of which earn you more Renown, and also apply to teammates. It's a weird system for sure as I don't like the idea of boosters in premium games, but they're something that can easily be ignored as the actual game is pretty fun to play. I also feel like the earn rate is fair so far. I've completed all of the single-player elements and have been playing online for the past day or so, so expect a review tomorrow.
Halo artist re-imagines a realistic Legend of Zelda hero Posted: 01 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST It's always interesting seeing things from a new set of eyes. In this case, it's a re-imagining of Link from Halo artist Kyle Hefley, who currently works for 343 Industries, handling character designs. This art is more of a realistic take on the hero, and can be viewed in monochrome format or full color, complete with Navi. He definitely looks more western, that's for sure, and if Nintendo ever decided to let another developer handle the series, I actually don't mind this look all that much. Realistic Link design by Kyle Hefley (343 Developer) [NeoGAF]
Metal Gear Solid V is half off on the EU PlayStation Store Posted: 01 Dec 2015 03:45 AM PST Putting the US PlayStation Phantom Pain price of $45 (25%) to shame, the European PlayStation Blog just kicked off its 12 Deals of Christmas and day one of deals is half off Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on either PS3 or PS4. Each day's deal lasts 48 hours. You have until 11:59PM GMT, December 2 for cheap Metal Gear. There's also a pretty extensive list of Games Under €15 for Christmas valid until December 24, too.
Europa Universalis IV on sale in time for Cossacks expansion Posted: 01 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST As we famously reported a couple months back: The Cossacks are coming, the Cossacks are coming! Well, those cock and ball sack hybrids have hit Steam as Europa Universalis IV's sixth major expansion. It will run you $20 -- not bad for newcomers, either, given that Europa Universalis IV is going to be just $10 for a little while longer. Paradox is also pointing attention to its new leaderboard, which logs Ironman game scores. Other additions in the Cossacks expansion follow:
Killing Floor 2's Return of the Patriarch update is worth the wait Posted: 01 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST Last week, Tripwire Interactive came under scrutiny when they introduced cosmetic microtransactions to Killing Floor 2. Many people who had purchased the Steam Early Access title felt that this showed Tripwire's true money-grabbing intentions: why would a game that sorely needed more content and balance updates get microtransactions before content? While it remains to be seen whether or not this will all go down in flames and the community will truly abandon the game like so many are threatening, the Return of the Patriarch update is going to breathe new life into the game. With a new boss, a new perk, new maps, and Steam mod and workshop support arriving, good luck sticking to that boycott you might have been planning.
Sony has two new $300 PlayStation bundles Posted: 01 Dec 2015 02:45 AM PST PlayStation 4 bundles didn't seem too prevalent or kill-worthy this deals season (though it's possible I just missed them all), but it looks like Sony is formalizing that $300 Uncharted Trilogy bundle and adding a $300 Star Wars Battlefront PS4 bundle for a couple more weeks of December. The price will hold December 5 through Dec. 19, according to the PlayStation Blog.
Activision reveals crowd-sourced music video results for Guitar Hero Live Posted: 01 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST I'm generally not a fan of lip-sync videos, but it looks like Activision managed to round up quite a few people into their newest scheme for Guitar Hero Live. The gist is that people are tasked with creating a video for Ed Sheeran's "Sing," and over 100,000 fans participated. The final product includes Stephen Curry, Shaquille O'Neal, Erin Andrews, and "Vine Star" King Bach (the world is moving so fast, guys). The best part is that it's actually playable in-game starting today, and the video was edited by Alan Chimenti, who worked on Katy Perry's "Roar."
Tecmo disavows Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 comment, still not bringing it west Posted: 01 Dec 2015 02:15 AM PST Comments made last week by a page administrator on the Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Facebook went beyond confirming the game wouldn't come west. Replying to a different inquiry on the subject, a representative wrote, "Do you know many issues happening in video game industry with regard to how to treat female in video game industry? We do not want to talk those things here. But certainly we have gone through in last year or two to come to our decision. Thank you." On that same Facebook page Koei Tecmo is distancing itself from the comment that, "reflect that individual’s opinion and not the opinion or business strategy of Koei Tecmo Games." But there are still no plans to bring Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 west.
Prescription for Sleep: Lullabies of Mana is a beautiful Secret of Mana tribute Posted: 01 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST [Disclosure: Scarlet Moon Productions' Jayson Napolitano used to write for Destructoid.] Secret of Mana is one of those games that really means a lot to me. It wasn't just because I had so much fun with the co-op function with a good friend of mine, but everything about it was just beautiful and memorable -- from the character designs to the soundtrack. Scarlet Moon Productions has a new album coming out titled Prescription for Sleep: Lullabies of Mana, and it features Metal Gear Solid/Bayonetta series composer Norihiko Hibino on saxophone and PersonaQ/Etrian Odyssey pianist AYAKI, so you know it's legit. Destructoid has an exclusive track to share with you all -- it's called "The Thick of It," and it's one of my favorite songs from the SNES original. You can listen to it freely here or below, and purchase it here.
Second King's Quest chapter out December 15 Posted: 01 Dec 2015 01:30 AM PST It's been a long time coming since the first episode of King's Quest, which turned out better than many expected. Five months is a long time between episodes, especially when competitors like Telltale are generally maintain about a two-month period in between. Of course, The Odd Gentlemen don't have that experience, so perhaps it can be expected. The second episode, titled Rubble Without a Cause, is set to release later this month. On December 15, players will finally get to continue the story of King Graham. Hopefully the wait for the third episode isn't quite so long, though with the holiday coming up we might have to expect a lull in development.
