Brand new Mega Man avatars hit the PSN

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 02:30 PM PST

In the dead of night, Capcom has pushed a handful of new Mega Man avatars to the PSN. They're based on the new Legacy Collection artwork, and will run you around $0.49 each.

There's a few cherry-picked Robot Masters here, two of which are in my all-time favorite list (Skull Man and Snake Man). I hope that every boss is represented eventually, but the Legacy Collection has a rather long tail, with the retail editions hitting next year alongside of the debut of the 3DS version.

Conan takes on Fallout 4 in newest episode of Clueless Gamer

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

While it looks like Conan O'Brien won't be riffing on the sequel to Tomb Raider this year, we're getting a Fallout 4-centric episode instead. The opening (above) is basically a glorified commercial with a few jokes built in, but the actual Clueless Gamer segment is worth watching.

Light spoilers are present, as a warning!

Review: Rodea the Sky Soldier

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 01:30 PM PST

The history of Rodea the Sky Soldier is one muddled with platform changes and developmental issues galore. Originally slated as a Wii game in 2010, producer Yuji Naka ran into publishing troubles, and the project was essentially shelved. A few years later, a 3DS release was then planned, and a year later still, he announced that the Wii edition was being pivoted onto the Wii U.

Here we are in late 2015, and all three versions are being released in some form. It's been a wild ride, and you can literally see some of the bumps along the way in the finished product.

Don't masturbate in public to PS4 displays

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

Security camera footage of an unknown man having a wank in front of a PlayStation 4 display has been leaked online, and now here it is for you to watch, if you're into that kind of thing. You won't see much skin, so no worries there. I'm not sure this is what Sony meant when it said "Greatness awaits" and "It only does everything."

Not a whole lot of information about where this video was filmed as it was uploaded to LiveLeak with no real details.

Apparently, masturbating in random aisles of stores happens a lot. I've heard various stories of employees having to throw out wankers from my time in retail, though this is the first I've ever heard of anyone pleasuring themselves to a game console in public. Personally, I like my consoles to be a bit more curvy, like the Wii U.

You can be polyamorous and bisexual in Fallout 4

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST

Former Destructoid reviews editor Jim Sterling revealed in his latest Jimquisition that players can be not only bisexual but also polyamorous in Fallout 4. That's right, you can love and sleep with multiple characters with no negative repercussions.

The fact that this is included with no real issue in one of the biggest AAA games of the year is pretty awesome, especially for people like me who are both bisexual and non-monogamous. I wasn't so interested in Fallout 4 ("Bethesda the game five," as I've been calling it) until I learned that I can finally be represented in an actual video game that isn't shit. Hurray!

I can't wait till Fox News and right-wing groups catch a whiff of this. It is going to be the whole Mass Effect thing all over again

Star Wars Battlefront has a surprisingly small file size

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

In a sea of 40 and 50GB game installs, Star Wars Battlefront flies under the radar. It defies what we've come to expect from a triple-A title. I bet the other games think it's a traitor and call it Rebel Scum.

According to the EA Star Wars Twitter account, Battlefront is at its tiniest on Xbox One (19GB) and at its largest on PC (27GB); PS4 weighs in at 23GB. Regardless of platform, that's about half the size of a lot of current-gen games. The October beta was a 7GB download on consoles and 11GB on PC.

The reason Battlefront runs small compared to its peers might have a lot to do with the fact that it's multiplayer only. Or, perhaps it's very well optimized. Whatever the case, it won't make you hard drive scream quite the way some other recent high-profile games do.

Gentle Love does EarthBound as a tribute to Iwata

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

[Disclosure: Jayson Napolitano previously worked for Destructoid. He is now representing Gentle Love.]

You know Gentle Love, right? It's the Japanese duo responsible for the soothing Prescription for Sleep: Game Music Lullabies albums. "Snake Eater" from Metal Gear Solid 3 done in piano and sax is a great rendition. The fact that Metal Gear Solid series composer Norihiko Hibino is one half of Gentle Love might have something to do with it being so good.

Anyway, Gentle Love has released a two-song album, each track a tribute to someone who passed away this year. The first track, "Onett," honors Satoru Iwata, who famously saved EarthBound, allowing it to reach its cult classic status. It is strangely melancholy; the Onett theme is normally upbeat and punchy, but this version slows it down into something more demure and wistful.

The second track, "Sincerely Yours," is more personal. It's an original work honoring musician Eiki Oshimi, who was a mentor to Hibino and who passed away within days of Iwata.

Prescription for Peace: A Tribute to the Departed is up for purchase on Loudr for a dollar to cover licensing fees. Any additional money made through the pay-what-you-want pricing will go to the American Cancer Society.

Dark Souls III looks to have two collector's editions, each with a statue

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

Thanks to yet another retailer slip-up, we have new information that a publisher was trying to guard. This time it comes courtesy of Geekay Games, and it seems as if we now know about Dark Souls III's collector's editions and possibly the release date.

As found by Wario64, a listing for From Software's next title shows both a Prestige Edition and Collector's Edition of Dark Souls III. Each comes with a statue, the Red Knight for Collector's and the Lord of Cinder for Prestige. The figures are the centerpieces, but the likes of an art book, soundtrack, and cloth map are also included. Images of those packages can be found below.

Geekay Games is taking pre-orders for both of these, but it's too early to tell if the pricing is accurate. The Collector's Edition is listed at 499 United Arab Emirates Dirham, which works out to about $136. That seems plausible. However, the Prestige Edition is 1799 AED, which is $490 -- that's rather steep.

Also, according to this early posting, Dark Souls III will release on April 12, 2016. Previously, Bandai Namco would only say that it's set for April 2016. If this is indeed correct, it's still not confirmed that the European and North American release dates are the same.

Close to home: dad throws son at foes in Dad Quest

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

I don't know why fatherhood has become such a prevalent theme among indie games lately, but I like it. There was Octodad, then Dad by the Sword, then Dad Beat Dads. Now there is Dad Quest, and it reminds me a lot of my own childhood. Being picked up and carried around, thrown at the school building, and used as a bola in a battle to the death. Good times. It's kind of like Offspring Fling, but with humans.

Dad Quest is currently up on Kickstarter, seeking seriously paltry funding of only $8,000. It's about halfway there, so I don't doubt it will hit its base funding goal, but I do worry that it will be enough. The campaign lists five people working on it, and with more than a year before its scheduled December 2016 release, that allows an average of $133 per month per person.

Still, I wish the team luck with the project. Something about using a child as a weapon hits my funny bone, so it'll be nice to see if this prevails in the end.

If you like Star Wars and Anna Kendrick, I have the thing for you

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

In a week's time, a lot of people will be transported to the battlefields of Star Wars Battlefront. EA is expecting around 13 million, in fact. All those folks living out the Star Wars fantasy before shuffling off to the movie theater a month later.

Obviously, the transportation is just a metaphor. They will sit close to their televisions and monitors and play Battlefront from the comfort of their homes. But, this live-action trailer takes a more literal approach as if they were actually transported. Everyone's clothes fall to the ground as earth is suddenly far less populated.

Also, Anna Kendrick makes an appearance. Some people like her a bunch. Me? Every time I hear her name, my brain throws her in a Anna Kendrick/Kendrick Lamar/Lamar Odom stew. My editors are telling me that neither Kendrick Lamar nor Lamar Odom star in this trailer.

Monster Hunter X has nods to Wind Waker and Macross Delta

A modder has taken the Alien out of Alien: Isolation

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

The first time I played Alien: Isolation, I was at developer Creative Assembly's studio in Horsham, England. The game hadn't been announced yet and we were the first non-Sega people to see it. There was the briefest of introductions before we were sat down and told to play.

Sega and Creative Assembly didn't need to give us a full-blown marketing pitch because Alien: Isolation is a game that speaks for itself. I crept my way ever-so cautiously through the beginning of the demo. Each and every creak had me spinning around looking for that Alien that I knew existed but I hadn't seen yet. It took me a very long time to meticulously get past that first section.

Later, I found out that there was no peril. I could have run through that part and been just fine. But, it didn't feel that way. Alien: Isolation absolutely nails its atmospheric tension. It makes the prospect of danger more terrifying than actual danger. Not seeing the Alien is somehow worse because at least you know where it is when it's in your view.

One person has released a PC mod for Alien: Isolation that will make it so you never have to see the Alien if you so choose. The mod (which can be downloaded here) gets rid of the Alien, leaving the player free to explore the space station. The music, sound effects, and other enemies on the Sevastopol are sure to keep you on edge, though.

Interestingly, the mod doesn't actually remove the Alien. Instead, it traps the xenomorph in a vent, keeping it from escaping and attacking you. That'll do, but we'd be more comfortable if the thing were entirely gone. As long as it exists, there's always a chance it'll break out and get you with its little mouth.

Fallout 4 has even made its way into Rocket League

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Fallout frenzy is through the roof today. The game releases tomorrow and reviews just went live earlier this morning. If you hang out in our little corner of the Internet, you can't get away from all the talk.

That madness over Fallout extends to other titles as well. Rocket League is adding a Vault Boy antenna decoration with this week's update. It's free, so there's nothing holding you back from using it to deck out your DeLorean.

Of course, the biggest Fallout fans won't be playing Rocket League this week; they'll be trying to survive in the Wasteland. Maybe if the radiation sickness has them down and out, they'll play some car soccer while recovering.

The Game Awards 2015 are in less than a month, here are all the details

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

Geoff Keighley has been producing video game awards shows for a while now, but it was only last year that he just put the entire thing together himself. In Las Vegas during PlayStation Experience last December, the inaugural The Game Awards took place. In less than a month's time, round two will go down.

Keighley and Company revealed today that the second annual The Game Awards are scheduled for Thursday, December 3 at 6pm Pacific in Los Angeles. As always, the show will be part awards, part reveals, part celebrities, and part musical performances. There will probably be some corporate-paid advertising in there too.

As we've come to expect, the whole thing will be streaming online for the entire world to watch. There are perks to tuning in, as Keighley says "We plan to put fans at the center of the show -- and give them special opportunities to interact with us by using their gaming consoles, mobile devices and computers." Game discounts through various platforms will be offered on the stream.

If you want to see all the pomp and circumstance first-hand, tickets will be sold on November 12. There's no word on the price of tickets or where in Los Angeles the event will happen. All we know is that anyone who checks it out -- either in-person or streaming -- will get to look back at 2015 in gaming and get a small glimpse at what the future holds.

Review: Just Dance 2016

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

Yes, another Just Dance -- the seventh in the series -- has arrived. This latest edition is no exception to the usual hallmarks that defines the series with its ease of accessibility and colorful party atmosphere. It holds onto the same format it’s had for years -- select a song, do a jig, and embarrass your friends by uploading the clips to Facebook.

There’s not a whole lot of ingenuity to this installment, but then again, that’s part of the mass appeal of the series to begin with. This time around there are a few additions to the roster: new modes and an unlimited streaming service to name a few. But let’s be honest -- we’re all just here to dance, rinse, repeat.

Bone-up on how Pokemon relates to real life history

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

Another Did You Know Gaming is out, and it celebrates the real life influences that are found in Pokemon. I think my favorite bit is how Sableye is basically an eyewitness account by a Kentucky family who thought they were visited by aliens.

I love things like this, and it's a large part of why I love Yo-Kai Watch so much. A lot of it is based in reality, and it's a ton of fun uncovering it all.

Affordable Space Adventures is getting a huge update this month

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

A lot of people have taken to the Wii U eShop's Affordable Space Adventures, and it looks like there may be another excuse to boot it up this month. This week, the game's price will drop down to $14.99 (from $19.99) for two weeks, which will accompany a free "remaster" update, which is set for November 12 in Europe (and "soon after" in the US).

There's an all new Origin Story gametype, five new levels, and fixes all around. The additional mode boasts "extremely difficult puzzles," which is good news for those of you who were left wanting more.

Video Review: Fallout 4

Looks like it's about that time again, Chris the Miracle Worker has managed to review a relatively little known game called Fallout 4. That said, who the hell reads reviews nowadays? So much time and reading text and you have to scroll and bleugh. If you haven't read the review by now, here's a handy video version with visuals and accompanying music, if you're into that.

Review: Rise of the Tomb Raider

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

I sometimes forget that Raiders of the Lost Ark came out in 1981. Its breezy pulp adventure quality carries only obvious signifiers of its era (like, Nazis), and the repetition of these tropes act as enough hand waving to the point where Uncharted's modern day setting can be taken for granted, though mostly because the series tends to exist outside what we see as modern society (save maybe for Elena's camcorder) and instead provide the same fantastical distance that 19th century adventure novels offered.

The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and its immediate follow up, Rise of the Tomb Raider, doesn't ground itself in modern society, either -- there's just a moment of Lara wearing a casual leather jacket back in England, an alternative costume I wore for the entirety of my adventure through Rise's wilds -- but neither does it call back to breezy, "fun" pulp history. Rather, it continues the self-serious, "gritty" origin story trajectory, hence the inelegant title.

Here's the first full list of Xbox 360 backward compatible launch games

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 01:30 AM PST

I really think that Microsoft and Sony have switched places in terms of functionality with their consoles this generation. The former came out of the gate with a terrible DRM concept that crippled their image, and Sony took the piss right on stage at E3, mocking Microsoft and their horrid anti-consumer strategy. But a few years later, the Xbox One has made quite the turnaround. One major feature that will be absent on the PS4 is backward compatibility, and it's finally upon us for Xbox One this week.

On November 12, current-gen owners will be able to play 104 games if you own the title digitally, or have the disc. According to the publisher there's more to come in December and beyond. Additionally, previous-generation Games with Gold choices will work from here on out on XB1.

Check out the full list below.

Which of the three console publishers has the best holiday lineup?

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 12:30 AM PST

Holiday season is upon us, and our wallets are not ready -- they never are. There's a ton of games around the corner, but surprisingly, most of the are multiplatform. That's a huge win in my book, but the "big three" console publishers still have their exclusives, of course.

Taking a look at what's to come, there isn't a whole lot. Microsoft launched Halo 5 recently, and Rise of the Tomb Raider, though technically a holiday exclusive, is launching later for the PC and PS4 platforms in 2016. Xbox 360 backward compatibility is arriving on November 12, though. Sony basically has nothing to offer outside of Bloodborne DLC for the rest of the year.

Nintendo, thankfully has a more exciting lineup. They just dropped Yo-Kai Watch last weekend, which I adore, and they have a few more tricks up their sleeve with Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Pokémon Super Mystery DungeonDevil's Third (US), and of course, the big one, Xenoblade Chronicles X.

All things considered, that's not bad at all, even if Star Fox was pushed out of this year.

Here's every perk in Fallout 4, in video form

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST

Number crunching is a standard pastime for RPG fans, especially for those of you who can't play games at work, and avidly theorycraft the day away until you can get home to the latest adventure. Fallout 4, like past entries, is no exception, and the massive perk system can be extremely daunting.

As a result, I recorded the entire perk chart and put it into video form, so you can peruse all you want. Note that this is particularly useful for deciding your initial statline at the start of the game, as you can see what each perk requires, stat-wise, before investing.

Do your planning now before the game launches tomorrow on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Review: Fallout 4

Posted: 08 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST

My first introduction to the Fallout series was in 1997, with Interplay's wonderfully open and unique strategy RPG titles. So when Fallout 3 first dropped from Bethesda years later, I was taken aback by a lot of the concessions that were made to transfer the experience to a fully realized 3D world.

New Vegas thankfully was a step in the right direction to help make the world of Fallout much more compelling, and as it turns out, Fallout 4 lies somewhere in the middle of Bethesda's effort and Obsidian's contribution.

Helldivers is coming to PC next month

Posted: 08 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST

Arrowhead’s Helldivers was pretty popular when it released on PS3, PS Vita and PS4 earlier this year.

The top-down co-op shooter was given a 9/10 by Destructoid’s Conrad Zimmerman, who said it was “unrelenting and brutal, [it] delivers fast-paced combat, epic standoffs and a comical approach to death”.

Finally, PC players will get the chance to see what Helldivers is all about when it comes to Steam next month. The release will include the three free expansions released, including Democracy Strikes Back. However, there will also be as-of-yet unknown paid DLC on launch, which isn’t great.

Here's the World of Warcraft: Legion opening cinematic, almost a year before release

Posted: 08 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

World of Warcraft: Legion is still the better part of a year away. That hasn’t stopped Blizzard releasing its opening cinematic though, and dang does it look good.

The trailer shows human and Forsaken airships descending to fight against evil warlock Gul’Dan, while the Burning Legion are throwing glowy green shit right back at them as any good baddies would.

Not enough Horde presence for my liking, but hey, Warlords of Draenor did happen so I suppose it’s the Alliance’s turn to be relevant…

It also proves once again that when it comes to cinematics, Blizz is among the best. It’s also fun to compare this absolutely fantastic CG work with the weird, uncanny-valley nightmare that is the upcoming Warcraft film.

World of Warcraft: Legion will be released in September 2016 at the very latest. I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more about it before then.
