Experience Points .27: GoldenEye 007

Posted: 07 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome.

This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time.

This entry is all about GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments!

Look for a $250 Wii U bundle with Smash and Splatoon on Black Friday

Posted: 07 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

While Nintendo has slowed its Wii U release schedule to a drip feed, there are still upcoming games that look promising (Xenoblade Chronicles X and Star Fox Zero among them), and more importantly, there are a bunch of fantastic existing titles you can't get anywhere else. I haven't come across too many Black Friday deals for the console yet, but this bundle is worth sharing.

Meijer will have a Wii U 32GB Deluxe Set with Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. for $249.99 + a $30 gift card (redeemable November 29 - December 24). You can't get much better than that for pack-in games considering 1) they're fun as hell and 2) they're rarely on sale.

GameStop will have the exact same bundle on Black Friday, but for $279.99 instead.

The main drawback here is that Splatoon and Smash will be pre-installed on the hard drive, so if you plan to make many more digital game purchases, you'll likely need an external HDD.

Final Fantasy VII composer isn't working on the remake

Posted: 07 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

Nobuo Uematsu, the beloved composer of Final Fantasy VII (and the most titles in the series), will not be contributing to the soundtrack for Square Enix's upcoming Final Fantasy VII remake.

While speaking with French outlet JeuxVideo, Uematsu was asked whether he was involved with the recently-announced PlayStation 4 project. "Not at all," Uematsu replied, suggesting either his music is being rearranged by other composers or Square Enix is moving in a new direction.

Blizzard: No crossplay, Mac port for Overwatch

Posted: 07 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Blizzard's new first-person shooter Overwatch may be coming to consoles, but Mac OS users are being left out in the cold. According to game director Jeff Kaplan, unspecified technical hurdles with the Mac ecosystem are limiting the PC release to just Windows computers for now.

"Currently with the technology behind Macs and the way Overwatch runs it's just too challenging for us at this point to support it," Kaplan said at BlizzCon, the studio's annual convention in Anaheim, California. "Our focus right now is entirely on [Windows], Xbox One and PlayStation 4."

For those hoping to play with friends across the supported platforms (à la Rocket League or the upcoming Street Fighter V), you're out of luck too. Kaplan added that Blizzard has no plans for PC-to-console crossplay, saying the individual platforms are "their own ecosystems."

The shooter is expected to launch next spring. More details about its pricing can be found here.

Cheaper Steam copies of Fallout 4 & Black Ops III in Weekend Deals

Posted: 07 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

Another Saturday, another round up of usual gaming deals with nothing exciting-- holy shit Fallout 4 comes out next Tuesday. Holy shit I better prepare my goodbyes to the wife, daughter, gardener, guy down the street that works at McDonalds (thanks for the extra sauce packs bro), and maybe Brayden too. Actually we all hate Brayden so F him.

Accompanying Fallout 4 next Tuesday will be Xbox One's exclusive of Rise of the Tomb Raider - which uh... should have picked a different release date maybe? For Fallout 4 on the PC, Steam key is 20% off at GMG and keys are being sent out instantly for pre-load (23.8GB). Since its still unreleased, stores are still offering gift card bonuses on console version.

Released yesterday was Call of Duty: Black Ops III which actually appears to be a decent game (on the console anyways), probably something to do with Treyarch (review here). So if you're into that then there's a $10 discount on Xbox One & PS4 versions below.

Finally this weekend screams Xbox One bundle deals. We covered it recently here, but some of the top selling/best value bundles are also listed below. Can't miss is the $350 one with almost $200 in bonuses. Can't fault Microsoft for being aggressive in selling their units when their neighbor Sony is flashing all the blings across the yard. Acting like a Brayden there, Sony.

Happy "N7 Day," Mass Effect fans! I hope you can muster up some excitement for this teaser trailer, which is mostly a montage of old space footage with Commander Shepard (voiced by Jennifer Hale) putting a bookend on the original trilogy, as we move forward with a new story and different heroes.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is expected to launch in late 2016.

Skullgirls dev 'underestimated' PS Vita port job

Posted: 07 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

At one time, Lab Zero Games planned to ship a PlayStation Vita port of its latest fighting game Skullgirls 2nd Encore "a few weeks" after the PlayStation 4 version. However, it's been a few months since the title arrived on PS4, and the the PS Vita release is still nowhere to be found.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Skullgirls designer Earl Gertwagen addressed the issue, saying the Vita version "is still undergoing optimization, and there are a number of bugs to take care of that, while somewhat small, we feel are unacceptable to ship with. We want it to be on par with other fighting game releases for that platform, and it’s unfortunately not there yet."

Gertwagen went on to say the development team "ran into walls trying to bring optimization up to par, and grossly underestimated how much work that would require.

"This moved us into a timeframe where we had to start implementing features for the upcoming release of the Japanese version, which has further contributed to the delay."

Lab Zero Games is currently focused on its next project, Indivisible, a Valkyrie Profile-inspired action RPG that the studio is attempting to crowdfund (to the tune of $1.5 million) via Indiegogo.

New characters announced for Heroes of the Storm, including a two-player hero

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 03:30 PM PST

Heroes of the Storm is known for trying some of the more unconventional types of playstyles, and that goes double for the upcoming character Cho'gall. As Warcraft fans know, this famous ogre has two heads, which will allow him to be played by two people. Yes, you heard that right, Cho'gall is only available with premade groups, and you need to team up with someone to use him -- he cannot be played in a solo queue.

The hero will be balanced as a "tuned up" character, and will count as two kills upon death. "Cho" controls movement and has a set of abilities, and "Gall" can queue up abilities of his own, with separate talent trees. If you play with someone who owns Cho'gall and win two games, you can unlock the hero for free for a limited time. Yeah, it's pretty wild stuff.

Two other heroes have been confirmed as well -- Greymane, and Lunara. The former is a human and Worgen combo, who can transform into his werewolf persona for a more aggressive kit, and back into human form for a defensive set of abilities. Lunara the dryad sounds really fun as well, as she is permanently mounted for an inherent movement bonus, and has standard ranged attacks that stack poison (in the form of a DOT). Oh, and Tracer from Overwatch is coming to the game at some point, as well as a new level called "Towers of Doom" and a new mode called "Arena" (a combat mode where you choose between three random heroes at the start).

Cho'gall, Greymane, and Lunara are playable at BlizzCon and the reception so far has been positive. In the same way I've covered every hero since the launch of the game, expect some impressions once these roll out for the general public.
