Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST

Call of Duty campaigns are some of the most inconsistent storylines in all of gaming. While some entries are content with wowing you on a constant basis with new setpieces and unique sequences, a number of them (Ghosts and later Modern Warfare games especially) have dull narratives with uncharismatic leads and boring, samey levels.

Black Ops III unfortunately is the first of its sub-franchise to join that negative trend, but it has a killer zombies mode and a strong multiplayer base to help elevate the overall package.

Can't wait for Black Friday? Xbox One gets three free games at Microsoft

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

Remember the news earlier this week that Xbox One bundles are throwing in a free game? Or GameStop is offering credit with trade-ins for Xbox One? These are all part of a larger promotion from Microsoft and the offer has now arrived at Microsoft Store with an extra twist. You now get THREE free games if you buy select Xbox One bundles from the official store.

The freebie offer is for a copy of Assassin's Creed: Unity (meh), Project Spark (cool), and a free game of your choice (nice). The free game choice is from a selection of 25 titles and includes recent releases such as Halo 5: Guardians and Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

Update: Project Spark is F2P for all already, so really you're only getting two free games.

Blizzard's Overwatch confirmed for PS4, Xbox One

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 11:12 AM PST

GameStop already ruined the surprise, but now it appears things are officially official: Blizzard's new first-person shooter Overwatch is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One alongside PC.

The good word comes from a listing on Battle.net, which shows boxed versions of the "Origins Edition" up for pre-order, but the corresponding links do not appear to work just yet.

Overwatch is planned to launch sometime next spring for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. We can probably expect to hear more about the game at the publisher's BlizzCon keynote tomorrow.

Invisible, Inc. gets new agents and more in next week's expansion

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

Six months after its release, one of my favorite games of 2015 (and also 2014) is getting its first expansion. Contingency Plan is heading to Invisible, Inc. (PC, Mac, Linux) next week on November 12.

Contingency Plan offers, "four new agents [below], two new starting programs, new weapons, items, and augments. Likewise, corporations have added a variety of new threats and challenges to test players skills in a new extended campaign." Corporations have, "expanded their roster with both new units and abilities as well as more advanced versions of familiar guard," while a mid-game complication, "adds new challenges and more time to develop your team."

The expansion will run you $5, though day-one buyer's will get a little 10% launch discount.

Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin' gets a lil weird this week...and a lil furry

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST

Pretty fun new Hey Ash, Watcha Playin' this week with a Banjoe-Kazooie twist. And way more nudity and animalistic sexuality and bloody eggholes. Plus funny voices! I want a gritty, AAA release, like a Witcher 3 or whatever, that uses no voice actors and instead has Animal Crossing garble and text boxes, please.

If you can avert your eyes from that chest long enough you'll see a Mr. Destructoid bobble head down in the right corner, by the way.

This Zero Suit Samus figure puts the amiibo to shame

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST

Two months ago, Nintendo released its Zero Suit Samus amiibo. It was adequate, but real Metroid fans might be left wanting. The Good Smile Company, the company with a good name and good intentions, has a superior figure that will sate those needs.

This 1/8-scale Zero Suit Samus model is up for sale again for the third time. It's nicely detailed, stands 220mm tall (8.66 inches), and even comes with a little metroid pal. It puts amiibo to shame.

But where it eclipses amiibo in quality, it also eclipses amiibo in price. The pre-order page lists it for 9,500 yen (about $78 right now). You get what you pay for, I guess.

A Witcher movie's in the works, somehow not for Skinemax

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST

The Witcher video games have a lot of sexin' going on, but that doesn't mean any movie made about the franchise will be automatically relegated to the late-night softcore adult entertainment channels. There's a silver screen version of the fantasy franchise in the works, and it sounds like a big-time production.

The movie's being headed up by The Sean Daniel Company, who produced The Mummy films. It's said to star Geralt of Rivia, but it won't tell any tale we're familiar with. Rather than being an adaption of any game or book, it'll draw on themes from the series to form its own narrative. This is said to be the first in a series of movies about The Witcher.

Tomasz Baginski has been tabbed as the director for the project. No actors have been announced yet. Right now, they're shooting for a 2017 release. But, you know how these things go. Don't pin all your hopes on a video game movie coming out on time (or ever at all).

Uh, Mario? Is that you?

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

Super Mario Maker got an important update last night. My focus was drawn to the new costumes and much-needed ability to lay down checkpoints in levels, but Nintendo also slipped in an easter egg. It's super easy to access, but I doubt I would have ever stumbled upon it naturally.

All you need to do is place a warp door in one of your levels, and then tap on it repeatedly. You'll be greeted by someone strange.

Sony: 'Shooter audience is switching to PlayStation 4'

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 08:45 AM PST

When Sony says that shooter fans are switching over to the PS4, it makes perfect sense. I mean heck, it's ahead in console sales by millions of units, so sheer popularity would dictate that more people are inherently playing on PS4. Then you have their incredibly aggressive exclusivity deals recently, where they locked up exclusive Strikes (dungeons) and weapons for Destiny, and even the timed exclusive Call of Duty: Black Ops III DLC map packs, which have been Microsoft's turf for years.

Want to know how aggressive Sony is in pushing these games? I always tell people the story of a GameStop manager who put out Xbox materials around his store for Destiny around launch, and received three calls from corporate representatives from Sony to take them down, and that "only Sony advertising will be tolerated in stores." I was able to confirm that story with a source, and that store was devoid of Xbox-related materials.

This new claim of a mass migration to Sony's platform comes by way of MCV by PlayStation group marketing manager Lauren Bradley, who also notes that shooter fans will be heavily investing in the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront on PS4 above all else.

As a big shooter fan myself, I'm torn. I just gained access to the Xbox One Elite controller, which I think is much more suited for the genre than the DualShock 4. Additionally, Microsoft tends to do things right with dedicated servers, and party chat is much more stable on Xbox Live. At the same time, a lot of my friends are going where the exclusive DLC is, so I'm stuck on PS4 if I want to play with them.

The console wars are alive and well, my friends.

Another covenant is coming to Bloodborne

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

Even if you're planning to pass on The Old Hunters expansion for Bloodborne later this month, there will still be a reason to revisit Yharnam. From Software is preparing a free patch that will introduce another covenant, The League, and more co-op NPC hunters, among other unnamed things.

The new faction is led by a man with a bucket for a helmet. Do you like his cane? It's yours!

SCE Japan Studio producer Masaaki Yamagiwa describes The League as "a band of Hunters who have taken an oath and are bound by a single purpose." You can join the group to "assist other players online in the game and compete in The League's online rankings leaderboard."

Battleborn needs a few more months

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 08:15 AM PST

Take-Two is giving Battleborn an extra few months of development. The PC, PS4, and Xbox One shooter is now targeting May 3, 2016. Previously, it was slotted for February 9.

"We at Gearbox are feeling energized by the data of our Closed Technical Test, and the additional time will allow us to better act on the feedback for Battleborn competitive and cooperative play when it releases," the studio said in a public statement.

I've heard people describe the technical test as just "all right," so a delay is undoubtedly for the best.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is out in February

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

The eternal plants versus zombies conflict returns on February 23, 2016 -- that's when Garden Warfare 2 is hitting PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Thinking back on how many hours I poured into the first game, my fate is sealed. It was a enough of a twist on the genre to really sink its hooks in, and I suspect it'll be the same story with the sequel.

Pre-orders include a couple of bonuses: "immediate access" to the Grass Effect Z7-Mech, which has a working Zomni-tool blade and the biotic power to "pull" enemies closer, as well as 14 emoji-esque masks for character customization. The Citron emoji is cute, I'll grant them that.

There's a '50% chance' we will see a proper new Legacy of Kain game

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 07:45 AM PST

Legacy of Kain fans have had a small taste of the universe recently with the free-to-play shooter Nosgoth, but others (myself included) are chomping at the bit for a real, proper action game. Finder AU managed to speak to Crystal Dynamic's senior designer Michael Brinker, and it looks like there's hope of that actually happening.

Brinker stated, when asked about a potential future Kain game, "it's a 50/50 chance. We have in-house developers who really want to make that game. It’s interesting because people look back at our history and our franchises and see that we have some really great iconic IPs."

It's cool that the developers themselves really want to see the series return let alone the legions of fans. Right now, Crystal Dynamics has its hands full though possibly developing a rumored third Tomb Raider game when they accidentally confirmed a trilogy at gamescom, and they still have to launch Rise of the Tomb Raider, so we'll see when or if this becomes a reality a few years out at the earliest.

See the Star Wars game that was cancelled before EA got the rights

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

There's Star Wars: Battlefront III. There's Star Wars 1313. There's even that Darth Maul game. But no one mourns Star Wars: First Assault.

According to the YouTube description, "This was a tech beta ran on Xbox Live a while back before the game was canned. The beta only had this one level and i couldn't spawn bots or add another player."

First Assault was, ironically, meant to be Star Wars' answer to Call of Duty and Battlefield. It was planned as a digital multiplayer shooter that would lead into an eventual Star Wars: Battlefront III by winter 2015 (hello!) and reportedly came as close as $10,000 in certification fees away from a public beta in winter of 2012.

Then Disney took over LucasArts, putting all projects on hold, and EA ended up with 10 years of the Star Wars license by May 2013.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate's PC requirements are done hiding in the shadows

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

It's almost impossible to talk about Assassin's Creed on PC without bringing up last year's Unity debacle. It was so profound that it likely affected the release of Syndicate, pushing it back a month so that Ubisoft could be sure everything would work as it should.

Two weeks out from Syndicate's November 9 PC launch, Ubisoft has given us minimum and recommended specs for the game. This is what you'll need to be sure that if anything goes wrong, it's Ubisoft's fault and not yours.

Here's the minimum your rig will need to run Syndicate:

  • OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64bit versions)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 2400s @ 2.5 GHz or AMD FX 6350 @ 3.9 GHz
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Hard Drive: 50GB of available space
  • Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon R9 270 (2GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0)
  • DirectX: DirectX June 2010 Redistributable
  • Sound: DirectX compatible sound card with latest drivers

Star Wars Battlefront's four gorgeous planets in just 30 seconds

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

Most everyone who is interested in Star Wars Battlefront has a good idea by now if they're buying it. The open beta last month served as a nice test run in that sense. We've all had an opportunity to see what we're getting into.

While it's not exactly indicative of the quality of Battlefront's final product, EA DICE released a short 30-second clip showing off the four planets. They're dazzling. Note that the video's not made up of gameplay footage, but it is in-engine capture.

Easy to digest, right? Less easy but interesting to some is an accompanying virtual tour of all the planets. The segmented videos stop at unique spots where you can read some facts and say "Oh, so this is where Wookie's live, huh?"

Take a good look at Battlefront's playground now. In two weeks, you'll be so busy dodging lasers that you won't have time to fully appreciate it.

Watch Tetra kick ass in Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors 3DS

Pulling a reverse Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors launched on the Wii U last year and is getting an updated version on 3DS, Hyrule Warrios Legends, sometime next year. It's January 21 in Japan, first quarter 2016 for America and Europe.

King of Hyrule, Toon Link, Skull Kid, and Tetra are being added as playable characters and you'll find the latter on display here. Seems buying this version lets you bring those characters over to the Wii U version, too.

Japan is getting a hella expensive Mega Man Legacy Collection package

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 05:45 AM PST

You win again, Japan. Sort of.

Capcom has announced that come February 25, 2016, when the physical package of Mega Man Legacy Collection is released, Japan will be getting a special edition. It's going on sale for 9,709 yen, and will contain a 2016 notebook, a sticky note set, and bookmarks. Both the standard and limited copies will net you two 3DS home themes.

On the flipside, while hardcore collectors will dig it, note that this is around $80 for the game, and some stationary. That's one cold price!

Target 'Buy 2, Get 1' free sale returns in time for Fallout 4

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

Starting Sunday November 8 and going through November 14, most video games sold by Target (online, too) are buy two, get one free. Of course you will get the cheapest of the three for free, but you can cheat the system* by buying two brand new releases and getting the third free.

Think of some games that will be out when this takes effect: Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Really just Star Wars Battlefront's missing, and that seems almost by design.

I last partook in this yearly festival in 2009, picking up Borderlands, Demon's Souls, and whichever Ratchet and Clank game came out that year. Not the greatest haul.

*Only if you were definitely already planning to buy two new $60 video games on the same day and still, even then, what system are you cheating, really?

Super Hexagon goes 60FPS on iOS

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 05:15 AM PST

Haha, okay.

So, Super Hexagon, a game from 2012, just got an update on iOS. It's the new "2.0" version, and it makes the game run smoother, presumably a fix for the larger screens as of late. It's an all across the board improvement, which includes a better frame rate, retina support, and sharper visuals.

An Android update is unannounced. I haven't thought about this one in a while (I didn't really get the obsession with this, I just went back to playing Cavanagh's own VVVVVV for the 20th time), but I may check out the 2.0 edition later today.

Why the hell are Assassin's Creed Syndicate's goofy steampunk costumes 1GB?

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

God, of course it was coming. Fucking steampunk. It will never be cool or good, you're exactly like that shitty we-live-a-Victorian-lifestyle couple that everyone made fun of for their shitty thinkpiece about how great life is without electricity and when women's faces melted off under poisonous makeup, except you've smashed up a watch and glued its bits to your fucking hat.

Anyways, what the fuck, Ubisoft? The common 25-50gb modern game download is filling peoples' consoles quickly enough, but some free Assassin's Creed Syndicate DLC is just adding to the problem. The free steampunk outfit for one half of Syndicate's protagonist duo, Evie Frye, is an 820MB download on Xbox One, 1GB on PS4.

There's also a $5 Steampunk pack with an outfit for Jacob Frye (complete with weird sideburns) that comes with pieces of new gear. That one's 1.5GB on Xbox One,2.1GB on PS4. It's included for Syndicate season pass holders.

Black Desert, that Korean MMO, is getting a King of Fighters costume

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 04:45 AM PST

You may recognize the name Black Desert from its insanely detailed character creation tool. At this point though my interest has transcended mere avatar construction, and I want to play the damn thing.

My interest has been further piqued by this King of Fighters promotion, which brings in a Mai costume into the fold. It will be added in by way of an in-game cash shop (read: microtransactions) later this month on November 11. A North American edition is confirmed for 2016, but you will have to buy the game, thus it will not be completely free-to-play.

Did GameStop just spoil Blizzard's big surprise?

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

Overwatch is headings to consoles, it seems.

Despite only officially being announced for PC, GameStop began taking pre-orders for Blizzard's first-person shooter on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One today, according to various sources.

Kotaku contacted a location in the New York City area and discovered the title is being listed as a $60 game, suggesting it either doesn't employ a free-to-play business model, as expected, or includes extra content similar to Heroes of the Storm's physical PC bundle.

Meanwhile, IGN managed to get one shop to utter the phrase "Overwatch: Origins Edition."

Blizzard is hosting its annual BlizzCon event this weekend in Anaheim, California, so there's a good chance we'll hear more about this at the publisher's keynote address tomorrow.

Destructoid reached out to Blizzard for comment and received the following response:

"We are excited to share more information about Overwatch with everyone at BlizzCon this weekend - so be sure to tune in to the opening ceremonies for free at www.BlizzCon.com."

Rainbow Six Siege has a year's worth of DLC planned

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 03:45 AM PST

Rainbow Six Siege releases on December 1, but Ubisoft wants people playing well into 2016. In a post over on the Ubiblog, the studio shows off its Year One Roadmap and details its plans for downloadable content.

In the wake of consumer unrest over DLC practices in other competitive multiplayer games it looks like Rainbow Six Siege is handling it about as well as can be expected. There are four planned updates sprinkled throughout the year. Each will bring two new Operators (characters) and one new map, both available for free with the former requiring Renown (in-game currency) and the latter unlocked immediately. Additionally, the updates will add new guns, also purchasable with Renown. Ubisoft is clear that it doesn't want to split the community or give anybody who pays extra an advantage.

Weapon skins are where the paid DLC comes in. The lower-tiered skins, like standard camouflage, can be purchased with Renown, but the higher-tiered skins, like that gross shark mouth gun above, are only obtainable via the premium currency R6 Credits.

Street Fighter V beta gets story tutorial with Alpha Ken and Ryu

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

A recent 2.3GB update for PlayStation 4 users engaged in the Street Fighter V beta adds a tutorial, going over fighting game fundamentals (walk towards your opponent to do fighting with them et al) and SFV moves like V-Skill and V-Trigger.

But it also eschews yoga-bro Ken and sexy bearded Ryu for younger versions of the duo that look straight out of Street Fighter Alpha. They're also being trained by Gouken and damn doesn't that 2D art make you wish Street Fighter was still 2D, even a little? Well, I miss it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III's Dead Ops Arcade II minigame is batshit crazy

Posted: 05 Nov 2015 03:15 AM PST

Just like the original Black Ops, there's a hidden arcade game locked within Call of Duty: Black Ops III. It's actually quite easy to access (just select the top-left icon in the video on the mission hub screen), and like its predecessor, it operates a lot like the old school classic Smash TV.

Except this time it's going for a Blood Dragon-esque vibe, complete with a man and chicken relationship, and an evil gorilla. My favorite bit though has to be the first-person mode power-up, seen at the end of the video below. Easter egg spoilers, obviously.

Expect our full review later today.
