Star Fox Zero site mentions online features, probably nothing

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 02:45 PM PST

When Star Fox Zero was announced at E3, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto said the company was prioritizing single-player (and 60 frames per second) and that there would be no online multiplayer at all. That still seems to be the case despite recent findings of 1) a Nintendo UK listing showing 1-2 players and 2) the Star Fox Zero site reading, "Additional accessories required for multiplayer; sold separately" and "Broadband Internet access required for online features."

Co-op has been known since E3 (one player flies and the other shoots), however, so the player count isn't new. Similarly, "online features" could be anything as benign as a leader board or the Miiverse.

Unless Nintendo and Platinum are taking the delay into 2016 as a shot to really blow things out of the water, these tidbits don't seem to point at anything.

Cool new art on that site, though!

Mario Maker has new costumes and checkpoints

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST

It's a great time to get back into Super Mario Maker.

As of tonight's update, we can now place mid-level checkpoints. Finally! They're going to have such a big impact on my willingness to clear people's levels. To add a checkpoint to your course, simply shake the arrow sign item to transform it into a flag, then place it.

The other big addition, Event Courses, can be found in Mario Maker's online hub. This new category is accessible by tapping the Toad icon on the Course World menu. There are six of these levels to start, and by clearing some of them, you can unlock the Totem Link (Tri Force Heroes) and Arino (GameCenter CX) outfits.

I'd also recommend taking a look at the Makers section of Course World -- there's now an "Official" banner with levels designed by Nintendo. You know, if you're into that sort of thing.

A harder version of the fly-swatting mini-game is available, too, but good luck beating it. It's accessible by shaking the Muncher item until the boss character pops out. I lost on the first level!

Blizzard wants to restore StarCraft, Diablo II, and Warcraft III

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

Based on a job listing, Blizzard plans to revisit some its past games. The company is searching for a senior software engineer to help bring StarCraft, Diablo II, and Warcraft III up to date.

"Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation," reads the post. "We're restoring them to glory."

The responsibilities for the job help clarify what Blizzard has in mind:

  • Make gameplay first again on modern operating systems.
  • Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play.
  • Own implementation and curation of features new and old.
  • Combat hacking to improve multiplayer.
  • Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.

I'd expect to see those three titles accessible via the Battle.net launcher once everything's said and done. If we get anything more substantial -- honest-to-god visual improvements, perhaps -- that would be a lovely bonus.

On a similar note, with BlizzCon 2015 this weekend, it would be nice to hear what is going on with the studio's efforts to update Warcraft and Warcraft II for modern PCs.

Bloggers Wanted: Thankful it's over

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST

Normally on this month of November, we give thanks for all that we have in spite of the endless obstacles life throws at us: a home of some sort, food in a fridge, or the knowledge that Platinum Games continues to work today and give our bleak, meaningless lives direction and purpose. But this time let's give a backhanded compliment to some of our favorite games with maddening sections you must slog through in order to progress in a game you'd otherwise love.

Star Wars Battlefront EA Access trial good for 10 hours of play

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 09:45 AM PST

If you're dropping the five bones per month (get you, Mr. Moneybags; some of us need that $5 for carrots to make soup) on EA Access (Xbox One only), you'll get to play 10 total hours of the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront.

Access is good for all portions of the game (single-player and multi-player) and the clock ticks whenever you have the game open, including in menus. Perhaps even more tantalizing, as folks seem to really care about how soon they get to play new games, this access starts November 12, a cool five days ahead of the November 17 release.

So, following up on our PlayStation Now discussion...this one, this thing, any of y'all subscribe to this business?

Oh, and don't forget to drop $50 on the Star Wars Battlefront season pass, lol.

Let's give away a PS4 and ten copies of Black Ops III

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 09:15 AM PST

The next few days are going to be very lucrative for Big Video Game. What with the release of Black Ops III, Fallout 4, and Rise of the Tomb Raider, these fat cats and big wigs are going to sit atop their wobbly ivory towers of game cases and season pass inserts getting richer while we get poorer. Let's fight back. Let's cut into their margins. We're Robbin' the Hood.

Our ammunition comes courtesy of Amazon, who has given us one limited edition Call of Duty PlayStation 4 and ten digital copies of Black Ops III on PS4 to give away. If you're not down with our version of Project Mayhem, Amazon also sells Black Ops III for $60. It'll come to your house in a few days and you can bask in the shame of knowing you sold out the cause.

Alternatively, Amazon's doing a thing where it's delivering Black Ops III at midnight on November 6 in select cities through the new Amazon Prime Now program. If you've never used Amazon Prime Now, the game will come at a $20 discount. More details on that here, you traitor.

Have we separated the wheat from the chaff, yet? You, friends -- you're all chaff. Or are you wheat? I can't remember which is the good one. Anyway, read on, freedom fighters.

Here's what you have to do to maybe get your hands on these sweet wares. Leave a comment telling us about a time you fought The Man. Maybe you slyly went around your boss' back, maybe you punched the bully at school. Maybe you're Ron Paul. If you've never stood up to The Man in any way, shape, or form, make up a fantasy scenario about doing it, you yeller-bellied coward.

Like always, Mike Martin's in charge of picking winners. You have to impress, bribe, or kidnap him to stand a chance of winning. (But really, winners are random, so you have to do none of that.) But, the dude wouldn't object to a nice Edible Arrangement showing up at his door.

Winners will be selected on November 6. We'll send out codes for the game shortly thereafter. The PS4 winner will have to email us an address, and Amazon will ship the console out sometime around November 10. Good luck, you little hell raisers.

Survey: More women own a videogame console in the US than men

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

Would you believe me if I told you that more women own a home video game console in the United States than men? According to Pew Research Center's study of 1,907 adults ages 18 and older, that is indeed the case.

As you can see from the results, women own consoles at a rate of five percent more than men. Also, people that have some college experience but never completed it make up the majority of console owners, which makes you wonder if people dropped out to become a Guitar Hero.

Personally, I'd take these results with a grain of salt, as there are many factors to consider such as the sample size, if the consoles were bought for their kids, and the fact that Pew doesn't specify if they asked about every console or just Xbox and PlayStation.

On top of that, for portable gaming devices, Pew lists the long-defunct PSP and the Sega Genesis, which as you know isn't even a portable console. Even if Pew had listed Sega's actual portable console, the Game Gear, it still would have been an odd listing for a survey in 2015. Now the Sega Nomad, that is where it was at! Plugging in another controller to play with a friend was the bomb, even if the battery life on the thing was garbage.

The Mario Tennis roster has at least one pleasant surprise

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

The more I see of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, the more I want to wait for an eventual sale. I've played a little, and it does feels good, but my concerns about Camelot not breaking enough new ground persist. There are also too many games competing for our attention this time of year.

We're fast approaching the November 20 launch on Wii U and, as such, Nintendo has begun regularly releasing trailers. With each new video, another character is shown. There isn't much left to the imagination at this point.

The latest roster addition comes from Super Mario 3D World.

Bethesda explains how the Creation Engine made Fallout 4 so pretty

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

Lotta folks think Fallout 4's plum ugly, but a lotta folks think Bob Dylan's a bad singer and that didn't stop him from schilling for Chrysler in a Super Bowl commercial. The point is: never like or believe in anything.

And while Bethesda has gone on record as not caring if you think Fallout 4 doesn't look good, the team did work a lot on its Creation Engine, as detailed in a blog post, post-Skyrim to separate this upcoming Fallout  from Fallout 3 seven years ago.

"The first thing we did after Skyrim was to enhance the Creation Engine’s graphical core by adding a physically based deferred renderer. This new renderer allows us to add many more dynamic lights to every scene, and paint our surfaces with realistic materials. We want objects and characters in the world to feel tactile and grounded, and a big part of that is ensuring that these materials are distinct – that metal reflects light in a distinct manner from wood, for example."

There's some dense stuff here not for idiots, of which I am one. "If you’re not sure what all of that means, don’t worry," it reassures. "What’s important is how this technology comes together with the art and gameplay of Fallout 4 to create a dynamic, immersive experience." Ah, yes, I love to play the video games!

Isaac devs Edmund McMillen and Tyrone Rodriguez are a couple of monsters

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 07:15 AM PST

[Update: The plot thickens. Edmund has taken to Twitter over the past few hours saying the missing items were the result of a post-launch bug and not part of some nefarious plan to punish dataminers. Cagey as ever, Edmund won't go into the hows and whys of what happened or why he couldn't say anything at the time yet, but promises all will be revealed in a blog post in the coming days.

Guess we'll have to wait for the whole story, but I don't think I'm ready to believe it was all a complete misunderstanding. Edmund and Tyrone seemed to be intentionally egging the conspiracy theorists on. Even if the situation was unintentional and beyond their control, they at least had some fun with it in the meantime, which is all well and good. After all, you have to have a decent sense of humor and a slight masochistic bent to be an Isaac fan in the first place]

The Binding of Isaac fan community spent the past few days in the thores of a full blown, conspiracy nutjob meltdown. Heading over to /r/bindingofisaac was like a scene in a thriller where the cops peel back the secret entrance to a psychopath's lair and find a wall of photographs with all the eyes scorched out with cigarette burns and a bunch of creepy doll heads nailed to a shelf. They thought Afterbirth, the recently released Isaac expansion, had some secret content they couldn't get to, and they couldn't help but tear themselves apart trying to find it. All the while, developers Edmund McMillen and Tyrone Rodriguez were stirring the pot, unleashing cryptic tweets and sneaky links, watching as it all boiled over.

Turns out they were sort of right, there was “missing” content. But none of it could be accessed by any amount of digging, crazy challenge, or datamining, McMillen and Rodriguez were playing a cheeky prank all along.

Halo 5's REQ Packs have already raised $500K for the World Championship

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Halo 5: Guardians had the biggest Halo launch yet, according to Microsoft, "with more than $400 million in global sales of [the game] and hardware." It's the fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive.

With that in mind, I've been curious about how well REQ Packs are selling. Many people are fine with earning these packs and the ensuing in-game items by just playing multiplayer matches and saving up points, but there's also the option to buy them outright with real-world money.

The microtransactions must be doing all right, because a portion of their proceeds go toward the Halo World Championship prize pool, and as of today, $500,000 has been raised.

Microsoft says that 45 million REQ Packs have been "acquired," though we don't know how that figure breaks down in terms of purchases made with in-game currency versus real money.

Ghost Trick is back up on Apple's App Store

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

A few months ago, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective was removed from sale on Apple's App Store due to compatibility issues with iOS9. That in itself didn't make a whole lot of waves, but then last month it was removed completely, meaning people who had already purchased it weren't able to download it again. Yikes.

All is now well again for the realm of specter tomfoolery. Ghost Trick is now back up on iTunes, fully compatible with the latest iOS devices. You should check it out if you have the means. It's pretty dang good, and the first couple chapters are free.

Rise of the Tomb Raider actually has tombs

Konami confirms closure of US-based Metal Gear Online studio

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

Konami has confirmed yesterday's reports that it closed Konami LA, the studio responsible for the Metal Gear Online portion of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The Los Angeles studio, formerly Kojima Productions LA before Konami scrubbed the Metal Gear Solid creator's name from as many places as it could, opened in 2012 as part of the company's "commitment to expanding our development footprint," president Tomoyuki Tsuboi said at the time.

Now Konami's singing a different tune in a statement issued to Polygon:

"Konami has made the decision to close its Los Angeles Studio, effective immediately, due to the product development resources being restructured into a more centralized unit. This facility contributed to the recent Metal Gear Solid games. Konami will continue its operations to support all Metal Gear Solid titles, including the recently launched Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Online. Metal Gear Online is still scheduled to release for PC Steam in January 2016."

Today, Turn 10 Studios announced a pair of Fallout 4-themed cars for its latest racer, Forza 6.

Those include a Fallout-branded 1956 Ford F100 (available for all Forza 6 players today) and the fictional Chryslus Rocket 69, which is coming next year for those who own Fallout 4 on Xbox One.

It's time for GOG.com's big fall sale

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

GOG.com has begun its fall sale on some 350 games and, all right, I'll look. But that's it!

This year, there's an extra bit of motivation on top of the discounts. If you spend $5 during the sale, you'll get a free copy of System Shock 2, which holds up to this day. If you spend $15, you'll get Chronicles of Riddick: The Assault on Dark Athena. And if you spend $30, you'll get Banished. Three very different types of games, but all of them are worth playing.

Fresh deals will rotate in every 12 hours, and new bundles will pop up every 24 hours. The sale lasts until Sunday, November 15 at 7:00am Pacific. Lots of Witcher, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout on the best-selling list.

Review: Yo-Kai Watch

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

Over the course of the last month, I've gone from knowing next to nothing about Yo-Kai Watch to falling in love with it. My wife and I watch the localized version of the show, I have the theme song stuck in my head perpetually, and I'm thinking of importing a few of the other titles in the series.

A little over a week ago, I got to experience the first game for the very first time as well. While it's not nearly as deep as comparable RPGs, it's incredibly charming and worth playing if you can get over a few caveats.

Co-op enters the Hearthstone arena for the first time ever

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

Potential co-op for Hearthstone has been the talk of the town for quite some time after a leak surfaced earlier this year. Now, players can actually play it by way of this week's Tavern Brawl activity.

Starting today, and through Monday, November 9, two players can fight Mechazod at the same time. You'll both get pre-built decks, and the titular boss will switch sides during each turn to battle individual players. No matter what the outcome is, you'll both net yourself a free deck of cards for your troubles.

It's a really cool concept, and one I'd love to see come to Hearthstone proper in the coming months. I think it would go a really long way for players who aren't all that into competitive play, and are intimidated by online matches.

Newer, smaller Vault Boy bobbleheads are coming for Fallout 4

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

If the 7-inch Vault Boy bobbleheads were too rich for your blood at $20, Bethesda has announced another 5-inch line that's going for $15 apiece. At this point you have a huge range to choose from, running the gamut of pretty much every major special ability or perk in the game.

I've never really been a big fan of Vault Boy in particular, but I'm tempted by the Perception one. The estimated ship date is November 13.

Ultron and Darth Maul hit Disney Infinity 3.0 this week

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST

This week, four new toys are arriving in the Disney Infinity 3.0 universe -- Darth Maul, Ultron, Hulkbuster Iron Man, and Spot. While Hulkbuster is technically a larger, more premium-like figure, it's listed at the same MSRP as the others ($13.99) Also, the rest are pretty easy to pick out of a lineup, but the latter character is likely going to have people scratching their heads.

He's from the upcoming Pixar film The Good Dinosaur, which not only helps mark the occasion of the first time ever where the studio has released two films in the same year (Inside Out), but is also relatively unknown, partially due to the fact that Disney hasn't promoted the film at all.

This particular Pokémon is level 50, has the illusion ability, and comes complete with Sludge Bomb, which it can't normally learn. Nintendo hasn't given a set date for the end of this event, so get to it when you can.

Bungie: 'Microtransactions and expansions can co-exist' for Destiny

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST

Well, nuts.

Shortly after the release of The Taken King, rumors started coming out that Bungie would supplement Destiny's new content with cosmetic microtransactions, and would refrain from going back to the underwhelming premium paid expansion model. According to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, it looks like that has been debunked.

When asked by an analyst regarding Destiny's future, he stated, "We had a full year of expansions to the game that have been very well received and sold quite well. More recently, you've seen us introduce smaller, in-game purchases that allow people to customize their experience and express themselves; those have been very well received and have sold well also. I think we've already shown that DLC and microtransactions can co-exist and that our community is hungry for more great content."

He stopped short of actually announcing anything, but odds are, Activision is going to to make money by any means. Get ready for some more underwhelming expansions until the beta period is over Destiny 2 drops.

Guitar Hero Live is adding 70 new songs to GHTV by the end of the year

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST

Guitar Hero Live was a pleasant surprise. After Activision milked that cow for so long, I didn't think it could introduce one of the freshest rhythm games in years, but it did. But this is just the start for Guitar Hero TV (GHTV), the new streaming music model implemented in Live.

In addition to over 200 songs at launch, the service is adding 70 new tracks by the end of the year, featuring artists like System of a Down, Alice in Chains, Weezer, Judas Priest, Iggy Pop, and St. Vincent. Additionally, a Black Veil Brides premium show will hit GHTV on Friday, which features footage from their concert DVD Alive and Burning.

For those of you who aren't aware, each song will come complete with a music video, or in some cases, a live concert. It's a nice break from the avatar-laden screens of old, and a great way to get acquainted with the style of a band beyond just listening to the track.

Finally, you'll be able to access the entire song catalog this weekend for free without spending tokens, starting on Friday at 4AM PT.

Among others, a goddamn dinosaur on a skateboard is coming to Indivisible

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

Indivisible, Skullgirls developer Lab Zero’s latest game, has managed to build up a lot of popularity recently. It seems like I can’t go 30 seconds on the Internet without hearing about it at the moment.

With the announcement of new guest characters coming to the game in the future, that hype train shows no signs of slowing with 11 days left of Indivisible’s crowdfunding campaign.

Talking to Polygon, Lab Zero announced that indie game icons will be joining as playable characters in Indivisible, with their in-game skills based around their appearances in their original games:

  • Annie (Skullgirls)
  • Zackasaurus (Super Time Force Ultra)
  • Juan (Guacamelee!)
  • Shovel Knight (Shovel Knight)
  • Lea (Curses N’ Chaos)
  • The Drifter (Hyper Light Drifter)
  • Calibretto (Battle Chasers)

I like that Annie is in it. Way back when Skullgirls came out, she was set to be the first DLC character for the game. Unfortunately circumstances meant that never happened, so being able to play as her at last in a Lab Zero game feels nice to me.

These are only the beginning though, as Lab Zero have stated that they would love to be able to add more guest characters in the future.

At least six future Street Fighter V characters have been found in the game's files

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST

With the recent announcement of Dhalsim, we now know the entire roster of returning characters coming to Street Fighter V at launch. Overall it’s a pretty decent roster and the new characters look fantastic, with one original character still yet to be revealed for the game’s launch. Still, there will always be disappointment for some when their favourite Street Fighter IV character is nowhere to be seen.

Don’t worry though, as user AceKombat of Shoryuken has datamined the Street Fighter V beta and found audio files that suggest either six or seven characters not previously confirmed for the game might be in active development.

The seven names found in the files are: Juri, Alex, Guile, Ibuki, Urien, Fun, and Balrog.

Now Alex and Urien make sense, as previous leaks suggested they were returning along with already confirmed launch characters Karin Kanzuki and Rainbow Mika. Juri, Guile and Ibuki are all fan-favourites, and so their returns were also to be expected.

Balrog is a weird case: his, Vega's, and M. Bison's names were all switched from the Japanese versions to avoid legal troubles with having a boxer called M. Bison. The file found is either for the boxer we know as Balrog, who has not been confirmed for Street Fighter V yet, or it's a leftover file from the Japanese version where the already announced character Vega is known as Balrog. My person feeling is that it probably is the boxer Balrog, however with leaks like this it's tough to really know for sure.

Fun (or ‘Fan’ as some people are claiming) is a character we know nothing about. Chances are they’re a new original character for Street Fighter V, so I’m sure if they are new we’ll be hearing about them soon enough.

So now I just need to sit in my hole and patiently wait for Cody to come to Street Fighter V. One day, my friend… one day.

Korean horror game White Day looks fantastic

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:30 PM PST

Today at a Sony Computer Entertainment media event in South Korea, a local studio Roi Games showed off an impressive-looking PlayStation VR project by the name of White Day.

It appears to be a remake of White Day: A Labyrinth Named School, a Korean horror game released in 2001, where players take on the role of a boy who becomes trapped in his school after sneaking into the building on the eve of the eponymous Asian holiday to leave chocolates for a girl he likes.

There's no word on whether this will ever see a western release, but I certainly hope it does.
