Pre-order Resident Evil Origins Collection to unlock new costumes in-game

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

Resident Evil Origins Collection isn't out until next year, but purchasing it before its January 19 release date adds a bit of eye candy into the mix. Pre-ordering the HD collection now will unlock new costumes for Resident Evil 0's Billy and Rebecca. Both costumes are throwbacks to Capcom classics like Street Fighter and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

Rebecca's practical nurse outfit fits right in to the gritty and injury filled world of Resident Evil, but Billy's prisoner costume is a little much. Like, I get it; sexy costumes bring in pre-orders, but seriously? Do we really need to see every outline of his pecs in that thing? I don't need distracting, form-fitting onsies in my game. Is a little realism too much to ask for?

VERY IMPORTANT: PlayStation VR has a game where you play as a cat

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 12:23 PM PST

Thus far, Sony's South Korea presser has been predictably light on news. Shu has some sweet checkered pants. There was a lengthy dubstep dance routine. Only 3,200 people are watching on Twitch.

PlayStation VR has hogged the spotlight. That's perfectly okay, because there's a game where you play as a cat. You know I'm not lying because the header says "VR Cat View" right on it. Imagine all the lazing about and wacky cupboard shenanigans. If you see a string, you might be trapped in there playing forever.

The future is upon us, and the future is great because in the future we can be Cat People.

PS4 users can now buy hilariously bad avatars

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

I've got the little futuristic frog guy as my PS4 avatar, so I'm set for life. But not everyone is down with him or the other freebies. Somehow, it has taken Sony until now to lend a helping hand.

As of today, PlayStation 4 users can finally purchase avatars through the PlayStation Store, and "previously purchased PS3 avatars will transfer over in the coming days."

We still can't change our PlayStation Network IDs, sadly, but this is a start. I hope to see other system features from that user poll come to fruition soon.

Now, with all of that business out of the way, let's look at some of the five thousand avatars available for purchase on PSN. By all means, post your favorites in the comments.

Shuhei Yoshida has cute checkered pants

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 11:57 AM PST

PlayStation's holding a press briefing in South Korea right now. It's hard to tell what's happening. People are speaking in Japanese and the show's being translated into Korean. I speak neither of those languages.

The show kicked off with Sony talking some financials, although I could understand none of it. Then there was, like, a six-minute dubstep dance routine meant to make PlayStation VR look really cool. But, everything was TRON-like and PlayStation VR definitely looks way better than TRON aesthetics. I've played it; I know.

So, I guess I'm just here to say that the Sony boss has some cute checkered pants.

Text like you're in a nuclear wasteland with the official Fallout keyboard

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 11:30 AM PST

Bethesda has released an official Fallout-themed keyboard for iOS and Android called Fallout C.H.A.T. (or, Communications Hub and Transmitter). The app includes a custom keyboard that outputs text in old-timey black and white, as well as animated Vault Boy GIFs and over 60 emojis.

Personally, I'm using the keyboard to harass tease friends that are super pumped about the upcoming release of Fallout 4, which is just a few days away as I'm sure you all know.

Splatoon concept art reveals urinal warp zones

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

A 320-page Splatoon art book was recently released in Japan and it's chock full of never-before-seen images and notes about the game's production. A lot of it is the kind stuff you might expect to see in a book of this type, though a small illustration on page 152 caused me to stand up and take notice. Ironically, the place I was standing at the time of this discovery was my bathroom, which is fitting given the nature of what was uncovered.

From the looks of it, the designers of Splatoon had at one point played with the idea of allowing players to transform into squids and use urinals and sinks to warp to different areas on the map. Splatoon's single-player campaign features a kind of ink-based power line system that allows players to quickly zip from place to another, and I have to imagine that this toilet-based form of transportation was an early iteration of that concept.

Potty humor isn't particularly hot right now, but I have to wonder if Splatoon 2 might return to this mildly icky idea.

Undertale is too demonic and evil for the 700 Club

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST

[Header image by Nibroc-Rock.]

Undertale, one of my favorite games released this year, made a very unlikely appearance recently on the 700 Club, a Christian television program hosted by Pat Robertson. The show received a question from a viewer about a peculiar skeleton.

"Recently, I was looking through my daughter's phone, and I found many pictures of a cartoon skeleton with one glowing blue eye and wearing a hoodie. When I asked my daughter why she had such demonic images on her phone, she told me there was nothing wrong with it because it was from a video game. How do I help my daughter not be attracted to such demonic things?"

Though the show makes no mention of which video game is being discussed, there's no doubt that the skeleton in question would have to be Sans, the pun-loving, lazybones skeleton from Undertale. How could anyone find such a lovable scamp like Sans demonic?

Pat Robertson urged the viewer to give their daughter something more wholesome to play. "There's got to be some video game that isn't so evil, but those things are filled with violence [...] and brutality, it's unreal."

It's rather ironic that they're trying to dissuade this young girl from playing Undertale, a game that specifically markets itself as giving players the option to not kill anything. If played a certain way, Undertale is all about friendship, mercy, laughter, and happy feelings, which is exactly the kind of thing Pat Robertson is suggesting they play instead.

Of course, if played a different way, then they may actually have a point about Undertale harboring monstrous tendencies. But let's not tell them about that, shall we?

There's a new Snoopy game and it kind of looks like Yoshi's Woolly World

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

Comic strips are three-panel bundles of joy. Well, sometimes. The likes of Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, and Dilbert fit the bill. Marmaduke does not. Marmaduke has only brought pain and suffering to those you love.

As far as these things go, Peanuts is pretty darn great. Charlie Brown and Friends is a classic by any measure, something so heart-warming in its innocence and its innocent mischievousness. And, there's a romantic perfection to creator Charles M. Schulz dying in his sleep the night before the last strip ran, going out with the thing he dedicated most of his life to.

Through merchandising, Peanuts lives on. Everyone's out for a payday. That's why there's a new Activision-published game titled The Peanuts Movie: Snoopy's Grand Adventure. It ties in with, you guessed it, The Peanuts Movie.

Judging by this trailer, it looks kind of okay. It's like if Yoshi's Woolly World were put in less capable hands. Snoopy underwater, Snoopy on the moon, Snoopy in a jungle -- that all seems like it nicely captures the rampant imagination of the lovable dog and bird sidekick.

This isn't some little downloadable budget title, though. It runs $50 which feels like a hefty price tag. Nostalgia is king in 2015, and the movie may find its way into the hearts of a lot of people. The game, however, likely will not because that's an expensive investment in hopes that Lucy doesn't yank the football away at the last second.

Three-year-old Call of Duty: Black Ops II still has 12 million players a month

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

Want to feel old? Call of Duty: Black Ops II is three years old. Want to feel, I don't know, surprised? Impressed? That "huh" feeling when you learn a moderately interesting but not too interesting or at all valuable piece of information?

Buried in Activision's earnings report and overshadowed by things like the company buying the Candy Crush developer for six god damn billion dollars, Call of Duty fan site Charlie Intel found the following:

"On November 6, 2015, Activision Publishing expects to release the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops III from its award-winning studio, Treyarch. Momentum ahead of launch has been strong and engagement for Call of Duty: Black Ops II grew quarter-over-quarter again to nearly 12 million MAUs, an unprecedented level for a game that is three years old and only available on old-generation consoles."

No wonder Black Ops III is still coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 without the single-player. And that 12 million November is up from 11 million in August, so the upcoming Black Ops III is building even more hype for its 2012 predecessor.

Fallout 4 pre-order deals: Cheapest PC discounts & console bonuses

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

We're exactly ONE WEEK away from Fallout 4's debut (can't believe I was just able to type that), and between the leaked content, screenshots from PS4 versions, and an overabundance of marketing stuff, the train appears to have arrived.

If you want tickets to one of the biggest gaming shows this fall, we've prodded the robot and it has delivered a breakdown of all noteworthy Fallout 4 pre-order deals, ranging from cheapest Steam copies to physical copies on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. If pre-ordering isn't your thing, hitting the back button may be prudent -- this post is pre-order deals all the way down...

North America Fallout 4 PC/Steam Deals

UK/EU Fallout 4 PC/Steam Deals

What About Australians?

You poor sots should just buy the physical copy from JB Hi-Fi for $59, which has been all over the news down under as the cheapest price on Fallout 4. If you need instant gratification (e.g. pre-loading the Steam copy), Funstock Digital's deal does not appear to be regionally priced in AUD. So at £29.24 GBP, you're looking at about $62 AUD -- not a bad deal at all. Make sure you use the coupon.

Europeans should probably also grab Fallout 4 from FunStock, which seems to be beating out Green Man Gaming in all regional pricing. The site gets a bit slow at times, though, so patience may be required during checkout.

Konami sorry for PES 2016 update boner, needs a few more weeks

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

Konami's in the news today for more concerning reasons, but remember that the pachinko-maker does regularly make one video game that's not Metal Gear: Pro Evolution Soccer.

Unfortunately, Konami screwed up its late roster update and apologized via PES Fan. Basically, the roster update added October 29 is incomplete, missing the final few days of transfers, which is when most player transfers actually happen. So PES fans waited for a roster update and then got a bad one, though the roster issue only affects offline play as off and online rosters are updated on two different channels.

"The roster issue is a priority for us to correct ASAP, but will take some weeks unfortunately," Konami said.

"We had planned a second Data Pack for end of November which was set to include a new stadium for PS4 and Xbox One, the Maracana. However, we will not release this Data Pack without including a fix for the offline roster issue"

The Jackbox Party Pack is coming to retailers

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Beloved party game The Jackbox Party Pack is coming to North American retailers on Nov. 6, courtesy of Telltale Games' new publishing arm. The partnership between Jackbox Games and Telltale is "part of an all-new strategic publishing initiative" on the latter's part. Telltale will also be publishing the Party Pack on the Xbox 360's digital games store, where it had previously been unavailable.

The Jackbox Party Pack contains You Don't Know Jack 2015, Fibbage XL, Drawful, Word Spud, and Lie Swatter. The first three mini-games are drunk party staples in my apartment -- the latter two, less so. If you want a physical copy of the game, it'll run you $29.99, compared to the $24.99 digital download.

Jackbox recently unleashed the Jackbox Party Pack 2, which was favorably reviewed by Destructoid's Chris Carter. I still haven't gotten sick of the first Party Pack, so it'll likely be a couple months before I dip into the sequel, but it seems I'll have a wealth of excellent content waiting for me.

Remedy: 'Quantum Break needs to be awesome'

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 06:45 AM PST

Sam Lake, head of Remedy, would rather it be his fist in his mouth than his foot in his mouth. Remedy's next title can't afford that kind of blunder. "Quantum Break needs to be awesome," he says in this video produced by Game Informer. "We want to live up to the heritage of Max Payne and Alan Wake."

We won't learn exactly how good Quantum Break is until April of next year. We will, however, find out some more about the game in the coming weeks. Game Informer has a month of exclusive coverage scheduled for it in November.

It has been two years since I had an in-depth look at Quantum Break. I wasn't sold. Steven saw it more recently, and he was equally wary. Maybe all that time-bending and cover-shooting will come together in the end. It'd be great if it were just the fist in Sam's mouth.

Bethesda sitting on unreleased Skyrim port for Xbox One

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

In twilight of 2013, Nintendo put out a remastered The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for Wii U. One of the key reasons cited for the project's existence was it allowed the Zelda team to experiment and familiarize itself with the new hardware before developing the next entry in the franchise.

It seems Bethesda took a similar approach with Fallout 4. Instead of releasing the post-apocalyptic action role-playing game alongside the new Xbox or PlayStation, as The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Oblivion once had, the studio opted to spend a little more time with the kit before launch.

"The first thing we did was port Skyrim to Xbox One," Fallout 4 director Todd Howard told Game Informer. According to Howard, this was done purely as an exercise to allow Bethesda's staff to understand the new hardware faster than they would making a new game from the ground up.

As for whether we'll ever see that Skyrim port on new platforms, Howard cautioned "don't get your hopes up yet," indicating nothing is in the works right now while suggesting it might be someday.

Make a map in Killing Floor 2 and win some money, maybe

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

...I didn't write about this? With all the Killing Floor 2 stuff I write I could have sworn that I did. This is bad. What else have I forgotten? Who...am I?

I'll deal with that later. If you have any mappin' skillz, you can put them to work in the Killing Floor 2 Grindhouse Mapping Contest. The first competition phase started on October 12 and ends on November 30 so if you want to be part of it, get to work! The second phase starts on December 7 and ends January 31 next year. Your map will be judged on criteria such as fun, performance, graphics, AI pathing, and a bunch of other stuff you can find here. 1st prize for the first phase is $5,000, and winning the second phase will get you $10,000. Plus, you can work in teams!

Now you have literally no excuse not to make a map out of Mr. Destructoid's head. And also make me a Mr. Destructoid helmet for when I play with y'all.

PlayStation Now not dead, service adds over 100 games

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 05:45 AM PST

I don't know anyone using PlayStation Now or even talking about PlayStation Now and the times I've tried it haven't really worked, but Sony keeps chugging along with its games-on-demand, subscription-based streaming service. (I am genuinely interested if you're subscribed, find it works, and find it worthwhile)

The program hit Japan last month and the UK this month.

Today the US PlayStation Blog announced the addition of 105 games to the service, almost doubling the offering to a total of over 250. Sony's taking advantage of its close relationship with Capcom (see: Street Fighter V), as "21 of these new additions come from renowned publisher Capcom, who will be adding top franchises, such as Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Lost Planet, Mega Man, Dead Rising, Bionic Commando and more"

Top franchises such as Lost Planet.

To be fair, the other 80 new titles are sort of meh.

Force Awakens' Jakku shows up in Star Wars Battlefront

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

In the second teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there was a striking shot of Rey speeding past a long-abandoned Star Destroyer. The scene takes place on a desert planet, Jakku, and the massive ship crash landed almost three decades earlier. How did it happen?

We'll get to see one interpretation of the event in Star Wars Battlefront.

The Battle of Jakku will be in the game, just not in time for launch. It's coming a little later: December 1 for folks who pre-order Battlefront, and a week after that for everyone else.

Blizzard's done telling us how many subscribers World of Warcraft has

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 05:15 AM PST

Every three months, like clockwork, Blizzard has shared World of Warcraft subscription statistics as part of its quarterly report. The MMO is perfectly healthy, but the fanbase isn't at the fever pitch that it was at several years ago. Subscriptions have mostly seen a steady decline, save for when expansions release. As such, the media loves to irresponsibly run "World of Warcraft is doomed!" articles.

Blizzard's sick of it. Following the announcement that World of Warcraft now sits at 5.5 million subscribers (the lowest of the past nine years), the developer is done publishing subscription totals. During an earnings call, it said "Note that this is the last quarter that we plan to provide subscriber numbers. There are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance." It wasn't elaborated upon as to what metrics would be used.

You can hardly blame Blizzard for finally going this route. Every other MMO on the market would be drunk on euphoria if it could touch 5.5 million subscriptions. When World of Warcraft hits that, it's supposedly bad times, ahoy. Losing players is never a good thing, but World of Warcraft's still in a much better position than its competitors. Now, it's going to have to find creative ways of telling us that it's just fine without misleading investors.

Dark Mewtwo is actually Shadow Mewtwo

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Just a bit of housekeeping. The new Mewtwo form copped over the weekend is officially Shadow Mewtwo, not Dark Mewtwo as early sleuths sussed. Makes sense what with its "Shadow ___" moves.

Not too much else revealed in the characters' debut trailer, but damn I'm still in love with Pikachu Libre. Pokkén Tournament is being developer by Bandai Namco in conjunction with Nintendo (like the latest Smash Bros.) and is coming to the Wii U worldwide in early 2016

Konami still planning next Metal Gear, needs a lot of money

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:31 AM PST

Konami seems to have closed its LA studio, formerly Kojima Productions LA before Konami scrubbed the Metal Gear Solid creator's name from as many places as it could. The studio opened in 2012 and most recently was responsible for the online component of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Konami has yet to comment on the reported closure and layoffs.

Meanwhile, the print edition of Nikkei (via 2ch and translated by Kotaku) has Konami talking about the next Metal Gear. Shortly after the messy, public split between Konami and Kojima, the former maintained it would be committed to making more Metal Gear, even without Kojima.

Nikkei notes Kojima hasn't said if he'd be involved with another Metal Gear, but given how things ended, it can't be likely. Most recently Kojima seemed to have a going away party with his team that Konami reports no knowledge of, saying that he is simply on vacation, though his contract reportedly expires in December.

The only real definitive statement Konami made about the next Metal Gear, according to Nikkei, is that, "When we start development, a large-scale investment will become necessary."

I'm sure the brand name and Phantom Pain's success is enough to sway investors, at least once, but Konami can't inspire much confidence.

Konami Los Angeles Studio to be closed, staff laid off

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

According to multiple industry sources (including former Dtoid CEO Hamza Aziz!), Konami has closed its Los Angeles studio, formerly known as Kojima Productions Los Angeles.

Duke Nukem creator George Broussard was one of the first to tweet the news earlier last night. Eurogamer later confirmed the reports, claiming "over 20 jobs" had been made redundant by the closure.

This comes after Konami dropped Kojima's name from the studio, renaming it to Konami Los Angeles Studio. As of last night, Konami's careers site displayed job openings at the studio, including the high-level positions "Senior Gameplay Programmer" and "Senior Multiplayer Designer," but all open positions at the Los Angeles studio have been removed as of press time.

We've asked Konami for comment, and will update this story as necessary.

Epic announces Paragon, teases a beefy dude with metal arms

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:15 AM PST

Epic has been working on Fortnite for a while, but that's not the only title the studio has up its sleeve. Today, it announced Paragon along with a teaser video featuring a guy who kind of looks like if DmC's Dante got buff and then also had his arms replaced with sleek red metal prosthetics. That's Twinblast, the first of five characters teased on the Paragon website.

The following character reveals will be trickled out over the next few weeks, with Steel showing up on November 12, Sparrow on November 19, Dekker on November 24, and finally Grux on December 3.

Following along with the character reveals will unlock in-game items for Paragon, which should release for PC in early 2016. That said, nothing else is known about how the game actually plays, so who knows if you want an in-game item? Beta signups are open, so we should probably learn more about what this actually is soon.

New experimental rules bring Underdark specializations to D&D

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

I've fallen a bit off of covering all things Dungeons & Dragons due to a dearth of time, but I'm jumping back in with this month's Unearthed Arcana. This one is all about bringing your character to the subterranean Underdark. There's two new fighting styles for fighters, paladins, and rangers (Close Quarters Shooter and Tunnel Fighter), a Deep Stalker archetype for rangers, the shadow origin for sorcerers, and a new warlock patron: the Undying Light.

It's all cool stuff that thematically ties well into the latest adventure, Out of the Abyss. I've only DM'ed the opening prison section of that so far (again, no time), but I might get my players to take a look at these just for funsies. Do you guys like these characters, or do you think they need more fine-tuning?

Someone uncovered 10 color variations for each character in Street Fighter V

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

This is to be expected for a fighting game, but Street Fighter V will feature 10 color variations for each character. Dedicated fans have of course uncovered them by making use of leftover files, using data from the recent PC and PS4 beta session.

Some of them are just small outfit color swaps, but in the case of Necalli above, they can sometimes be more dramatic. Whether these will be locked behind the new "merit-based" DLC system is unknown.

Review: Rodea the Sky Soldier

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

The history of Rodea the Sky Soldier is one muddled with platform changes and developmental issues galore. Originally slated as a Wii game in 2010, producer Yuji Naka ran into publishing troubles, and the project was essentially shelved. A few years later, a 3DS release was then planned, and a year later still, he announced that the Wii edition was being pivoted onto the Wii U.

Here we are in late 2015, and all three versions are being released in some form. It's been a wild ride, and you can literally see some of the bumps along the way in the finished product.

Have you ever been okay with a big publisher buying another developer?

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

So, it looks like Activision is buying King. That King, the one who makes Candy Crush. I can't say that it doesn't make sense, but that doesn't mean it's any less surprising. I'm trying to think of when a situation like this has actually worked out for consumers though, and I'm not coming up with much. I've seen countless defunct studios (Bizarre Creations) fall in the wake of their buyer, in addition to ones who have been crippled and are a shell of their former self (BioWare).

But in some ways, I'm actually okay with this situation. Look, traditional publishers often find themselves in the red these days, looking to the mobile avenue for profits. In the case of Activision, I still think Blizzard (who was bought by the same company, funnily enough) makes really great games -- if King's mobile revenue keeps letting them do that, so be it. Big publishers really need to start making moves now to account for an increased casual audience beyond anything that the Wii brought to the table. Heck, Nintendo seems to be doing a two-fold strategy with the NX and their DeNA mobile titles.

The jury is still out on Activision and King (what's next, Candy Crush inside of StarCraft II?), but a few other instances of publishers purchasing developers have worked out in the past. For instance, I was pretty okay with Monolith Soft being sold to Nintendo in 2007. It might be a rare occurrence, but what was one such positive situation on your end?
