Look who's coming to Thanksgiving dinner (spoiler: it's Chad Concelmo)

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

It's been long enough since Chad Concelmo left Destructoid that we probably have some readers now who aren't familiar with the most amazing features editor/perpetual teenager/fragrance mogul to grace our pages. If you don't know him, read this or go listen to old episodes of RetroForceGO!

Sadly (for us), Chad moved on to work for Golin Harris, working on public relations for Nintendo. Typically this means he stays behind the scenes, but to commemorate Thanksgiving he stars in the short film below. Since it stars Chad, it is naturally amazing (!!).

Also Kirby is there too, but who cares about that?

The wastelander's guide to building settlements in Fallout 4

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

Okay, so you've been playing Fallout 4 since launch and you've wandered the wastes, scoured the ruins of Boston, and swam in the glowing sea. You've had a lot of adventures. Now you're thinking about settling down, and checking out all that settlement crap you haven't touched since Preston begged you to show him and his buddies how to plant carrots.

That's fantastic, because I've been wasting my time playing around with the settlement stuff since the day the game came out and I have a full country harvest of tips and tricks that will save you time and get the most out of your settlements.

What're you playing? IS IT FALLOUT 4?

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Lord on a skateboard we did it, that's it, the year's over, there's nothing left to get through in 2015 (year 3 of Luigi). I'd like to thank everyone who got us this far and let's just coast into 2016, done completely with holidays, with 5PM sunsets, with frigid chills even in almost-always-perfect San Francisco.

Hopefully you are playing some games to celebrate. Or writing a poem or falling in love or hate-eating day-two leftovers or having fun with friends online or studying grammar in a foreign tongue or baby sitting an old, crocheting woman or whatever else fills your heart with medical-grade pharmaceutical feelings of joy.

These are the games what we're playing.

Final Fantasy VI rated for PC

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

Final Fantasy VI is on its way to PC, a new PEGI rating suggests.

While Square Enix has not made any official announcements regarding the matter, the publisher has re-released a number of classic Final Fantasy games on the platform recently.

If precedent if followed, this is likely an enhanced version of the mobile port, rather than the original game or a full-blown remake, as we've seen with the PC editions of Final Fantasy IIIIV, and V.

Square initially released the role-playing game on SNES in 1994, and has since brought the title to PlayStation, Game Boy Advance,  and various digital storefronts. In 2013, Square Enix released an unnecessary remake of sorts for iOS devices (which came to Android the following year).

The mobile version is currently available for half-off ($7.99 down from $15.99) via Google Play.

You can fight Majima anywhere in the world in the Yakuza remake

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Yakuza: Kiwami, a remake for the original game, is shaping up to be a pretty awesome re-release. There are a ton of new features packed in, one of which is the ability to fight Majima Goro, a Starscream-esque friend of the main character, anywhere you want.

In essence, the story reason for this is because Kiryu, only recently released from 10 years in prison, needs to constantly practice -- so Majima is always at the ready, even if it means coming through a sewer grate at a moment's notice. If this ever gets localized, I'm in.

Speaking of Yakuza, the fifth game still doesn't have a solid date -- it's supposed to be released in the west digitally just next month.

Here's a quick look at World of Warcraft's new Demon Hunter class

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

The World of Warcraft: Legion expansion isn't set to debut until mid-2016 (!), but Blizzard has provided alpha access to some individuals far ahead of its release. As of this week I had a chance to try out the Demon Hunter class, which only Night Elves and Blood Elves have access to.

Since I've always had an affinity for the Horde (though my server-first raiding guild during Burning Crusade made me switch to Alliance), I created a Blood Elf, and jumped into it. Like the Death Knight before it there's a little exposition with a limited amount of skills before you jump into the core game, and it sheds a little light on some more of Illidan's story.

What's really cool about the class is that it has a double-jump, glide, and dash attack at its disposal, the latter of which can be used to air-dash. Souls also drop from some fallen foes, which can replenish your HP when touched, adding a bit more flair as well. It's a tad more action oriented than a lot of other play styles, but at the end of the day it's still WoW.

I wasn't really floored by what's on offer so far, but I'm still looking forward to the new expansion.

StarCraft II co-op goes free-to-play, but only directly with friends

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is out, and with it, a few new modes, such as the full co-op portion and Archon Mode -- which allows two players to control one base. But if you aren't willing to take the plunge yet, the Starter Edition has been updated recently to account for the Void expansion. In essence, you can download the game for free and get all of the new units, but you can only play with friends.

As an added bonus due to the recent patch, co-op mode is available, with three of the six characters at your disposal. If you're interested in seeing how the game has changed over the years, give it a shot.

Let's take a moment to reflect on how amazing Donkey Kong Country 2 was

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

Donkey Kong Country 2 turned 20 this month. To celebrate, current Rare Creative Director (since 1998!) is reminiscing on the game, tweeting out tons of concept art, as well as used and unused ideas. It really brings home how well-crafted Rare's older games were, and how much love went into each and every release. It showed.

Diddy's Kong Quest (which is not Diddy Kong's Quest by the way, a moniker that I used for almost two decades) had a major impact on me at release. Even though I was already a big Country fan because of the first game, I ended up playing the second iteration for weeks on end, enjoying both the solo and co-op elements. It played so well, and the levels were among the greatest seen to date in the platforming genre.

There's a ton of great sketches and designs on Mayles' Twitter, and if you're a Country fan, I suggest checking them out.

PES 2016 is getting a free-to-play edition soon with seven teams

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

For all five of you who play PES 2016 (just kidding, it's a wildly successful franchise) will be delighted to hear that your friends can join in on the action soon for free. Starting December 8, there will be a free "entry level" edition of the game that features an exhibition mode and seven teams, as well as a training portion and myClub.

It will apparently be updated for free alongside of the core game, so all of the new mechanics and roster changes will follow. Pretty neat.

The Nintendo UK Store just got a huge amiibo restock

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 01:30 AM PST

In the UK, Nintendo has a dedicated online store where you can go online, and buy amiibo straight from the source. I know right? Here in the US we have to hunt for retailer exclusives and hope that our F5 tactics actually work when refreshing random online storefronts, but over there, you can just buy any figure you want that's in stock.

And as of right now, it's quite a bit. All of the Splatoon amiibo are back (including the squid), as is Mega Yarn Yoshi, Rosalina (who is still ultra rare in the US), Chibi Robo, and Retro Mario. Have at it, friends. For those of you who aren't familiar with the UK store yet, note that it won't ship to the states.

You'll want to watch this Xenoblade Chronicles X map guide video

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 01:15 AM PST

If you're hyped up for Xenoblade Chronicles X, you'll probably want to take the time to watch this nine minute video regarding the game's map system. It's pretty complicated, and X doesn't actually explain everything in detail unless you figure it out for yourself, and read the actual manual.

Remember when you had to do that? Glorious. I've even had to take notes in a real notepad reviewing this. Expect a full review on Monday morning.

Xbox One Fallout 4 1TB bundle $329 in early Cyber Monday sale

Posted: 27 Nov 2015 06:30 PM PST

Update. Deal's dead. Finally OOS. Check for other Xbox One bundle deals here.

Here's an Xbox One Fallout 4 bundle that crept up on us "unexpectedly." We somehow thought this sale was going to happen on Sunday night or else we would have mentioned it earlier. Turns out the spreadsheet said 9PM PST on 11/27 FRIDAY... And thus just before Black Friday has closed the curtain in the West Coast... out comes an early Cyber "Monday" deal.

Okay. Sure.

If you missed out on Microsoft Store's Black Friday deal (which started on a Wednesday night), Antonline has 2,000 units of Xbox One Fallout 4 1TB bundles up for grab at a low price of $329.99. This is a pretty swell deal all things considered, especially since sales tax is imposed in California and Georgia only.

FYI, you'll need to add to cart before you can see the price. Shipping is free.

There's only about 700 units available left so the deal should end well before Monday. Will it last through Saturday? Who knows, but there also aren't too many shoppers awake at this ungodly hour. Gamers totally sleep, right?
