Call of Duty: Black Ops III tops Japanese charts

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST

You typically don't see first-person shooters topping the Japanese software charts, but that's exactly what Treyach's Call of Duty: Black Ops III has done since its launch two weeks ago.

The first-person shooter moved 187,446 units since November 6 (143,817 in the fist week) on PS4, according to the latest information compiled by Japanese sales tracking group Media Create.

Per the same data, the title sold 32,022 additional copies on PS3 over the same period, and outsold other new releases like Project X Zone 2, Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Need for Speed.

In comparison, last November's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare topped Japan's charts in its opening week with 79,586 sales on PS3, plus 64,060 more on PS4, and 3,370 on Xbox One. The previous year, Call of Duty: Ghosts played runner-up to God Eater 2 with 190,631 sales on PS3 and 12,950 on Xbox 360. Ghosts released on PS4 in February 2014 and sold 13,701 in its debut.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the aspect of the data is how country's platform preference has changed over the past couple years. Despite initially struggling to sell in Japan, the PS4 has become the leading platform of late, even outperforming the long-popular portable systems.

In its opening weekend, Black Ops III generated over $550 million worldwide.

Christmas Pikachu and other holiday Pokemon merch

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

From the people that brought you Intern Pikachu, the Pokémon Center is doing a holiday line of Pokémon products. Deck the halls with Pokéballs of holly. Rudolph the red-nosed Deerling. Uh. Man, I really haven't heard Christmas music is a couple of years.

There's a Pikachu tree ornament, a "holiday wreath" (#waronchristmas), a bunch of plushes, some mugs, and Pokémon shaped cookie cutters. The line will be up for sale at the Pokémon Center on November 25.

The Silent Hill Retrospective: Origins

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Silent Hill: Origins opened with an outsider saving a little girl from a house fire. But when you look back on its place in the series, it meant so much more than a simple rescue. Travis Grady had problems of his own, but they meant very little in the grand scheme of Alessa Gillespie's fate. Legacy, it seemed, was more important than the here and now. The very idea of it would haunt Silent Hill to the bitter end.

We had entered a new era, where the Eastern/Western Horror Assimilation was wholly Westernised. The exoticism had been replaced by rationalisation, the abstract now explained through the poppiest of psychologies. Silent Hill's greatest strength, up to this point, was its ability to be introspectively surreal, yet broadly relatable. But come 2007, it had to contend with a burgeoning world of wiki pages and ill-defined trope sites; where every slice of media had to be connected, referenced, catergorised, and virtually filed.

Origins' developer, Climax, would go on to make the superior Shattered Memories, but first it had to deal with the trappings of prequels, retcons, and shared universes. As a result, Origins merely tread water, kept itself neutral; which wasn't the greatest of starts in this new era of Westernised survival horror. SH4: The Room had its faults, but hand on heart, it was still a memorable experience. But what was Origins to anybody, exactly, if not for money and fandom?

PS Vita RPG Ray Gigant heads west next spring

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

PlayStation Vita dungeon crawler Ray Gigant is coming to North America and Europe next spring.

The role-playing game comes from Operation Abyss and Demon Gaze studio Experience, and while it was published by Bandai Namco in Japan, new publisher Acttil is handling the localization.

Ray Gigant follows the exploits of three super-powered young warriors striving to save the world from alien titans that have invaded the planet and destroyed most of its major cities. However, these folks don't always see eye-to-eye on the best way to accomplish their common goals.

Acttil tells us the plan for the western release is to release it digitally via PlayStation Network with PlayStation TV compatibility and Japanese voice-over accompanied by English subtitles.

If you're in the Bay Area, you can go hands-on with the RPG at PlayStation Experience next month.

Review: Mayan Death Robots

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

I really enjoyed my time with Mayan Death Robots at PAX East this year. My buddy and I played a few matches and left anticipating its eventual release. Now that it is released, I was excited to jump in and see the final product.

As someone who somewhat-regularly hosts local multiplayer game nights, I look forward to including Mayan Death Robots into the rotation, even if it is just for a match or two. If you're not in my position, well, maybe this isn't for you.

Atelier Escha & Logy Plus coming to PlayStation Vita in January

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Atelier Escha & Logy Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky is coming to PlayStation Vita in North America on January 19 and Europe the very next day, Koei Tecmo has announced.

The role-playing game originally came out on PlayStation 3 in 2014, but (just like previous entries in the series) has been reworked for the portable and stuffed to the gills with various enhancements.

This time around, those include new events inspired by the anime adaptation of the game, all the DLC from the PS3 release out of the box (if there were a box -- it's a digital-only release), a new playable character, more costumes, extra missions, new bosses, and some rebalancing.

Two Earth Defense Force games deploy Dec. 8

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

XSEED Games is serving up a double-shot of bug-killing action on December 8, simultaneously putting out both Earth Defense Force 4.1 and Earth Defense Force 2 in North America.

EDF 4.1, an expansion on last year's Earth Defense Force 2025 for PlayStation 4, vaunts improved visuals, smoother framerates, and over 50 percent new content to help justify its $50 price tag.

Meanwhile, EDF 2 ($30) is a PlayStation 2 title previously unreleased in North America that's been reworked for the PlayStation Vita with extras features, including new voiceover and online co-op.

There's currently no word on when exactly the games will be released in European markets.

Hahahaha: Tidus shows his stuff in Dissidia Final Fantasy arcade

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

Tidus (Teedus) is kind of an awkward protagonist. X was the first fully-voiced Final Fantasy game, and Square really tried to force in some strange subplots and scenes meant to evoke emotion -- instead, they ended up being weird in an uncanny valley-esque way.

But the game? Man do I love myself some Final Fantasy X. It's easily one of my favorites of the series, and the battle system, post-game events, and soundtrack are excellent by any standard. Tidus is one of my favorite main characters from a pure gameplay perspective, as his speedy style and weapon choice (Caladbolg is one of the coolest Ultimate Weapons) are ace.

It makes sense that he translates well into Dissidia Final Fantasy, which is launching next week in Japanese arcades.

Humble Weekly brings back the Japanese indies

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

The doujin scene isn't my usual beat, but Astebreed is cool as hell and I like sharing deals whenever possible. As such, hey, you may want to take a look at this Japan-centric Humble Weekly Bundle. No rush! You've got several days, still.

Pay what you want:

Pay more than the average (which is only $3.30 at the time of writing):

If the titles sound familiar, well, that's the bundle way. These things tend to repeat themselves.

Happy one year anniversary amiibo, you wretched little things

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST

It's crazy to think that exactly one year ago today, I was hopping from store to store to pick up the first ever wave of amiibo. While characters like Mario were extremely easy to find, I distinctly noticed that even though I was able to pick up the Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer figures, that there were only a few per store. By the time I got home the "Trinity" debacle had already started unfolding, and shortages in the US are still a thing to this day.

As I noted a few months ago, I stopped getting into hardcore hunting. I haven't waited in line once since then, though I will break that trend tomorrow waiting for Lottie (a Target exclusive), so I can hang out with a friend as he picks one up for his wife. Still, I've opened the packages of every single one of my figures -- I like their look and their functionality -- and with the help of some amazing readers and friends, I've managed to snag every amiibo to date.

They're cool little items for sure, and even though Nintendo has gotten the situation more under control compared to the disasters of Wave 3 and the like, it can still get a bit sticky. Here's to another year of hopefully curbing back, though all of the recently announced US amiibo bundles show no signs of that happening.

Samsung's $99 Gear VR headset out now in US

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

Oculus and Samsung's $99 Gear VR headset is now available in the United States.

The attractive price point comes with one caveat: the device is only compatible with this year's line of Samsung smartphones (the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge+).

The companies are touting more than 100 games and apps available at launch, with over 25 more "brand new made-for-VR games and experiences" planned for release by early December.

You can find Gear VR demo stations at select Best Buy and AT&T locations. The headset is also available for order via Amazon and can be found at T-Mobile shops starting next week.

According to the manufacturers, a worldwide release will happen sometime soon.

Hold up: The MIDA Multi-Tool is coming back to Destiny

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST

When Destiny made the jump to "Year 2" with The Taken King, a number of Exotics didn't make it along for the ride. A huge one is the Gjallarhorn, a notoriously unbalanced rocket launcher that nearly every raid group "required" for public runs. But there's a number of good Exotics that are far better than the ones included in Year 2.

My personal favorite, the MIDA Multi-Tool, is confirmed to return in Year Two, pending the arrival of the December update. I typically only use it for my Hunter, but in essence, it's a scout rifle (my favorite weapon type) that makes you run extremely fast, with the added ability to see the radar while aiming down your sight.

It sounds small but the speed boost is relatively crazy, and on a maxed out agility Hunter you can basically run twice as fast as any other class. A few other are confirmed to return, like the Armamentarium, the Nothing Manacles, and the underwhelming Dragon's Breath (which might be alright now since the 'horn is out) -- more will be revealed leading up to December, and others are already on the landing page.

As fun as it will be to boost the MIDA up to 320 for a while, it doesn't stop the fact that there's still no real fresh content in the game. Raid challenges still haven't been delivered, and my group is basically taking a break to play Fallout 4 or Battlefront until they drop. Bungie has a long road ahead as there's no other expansion in sight.

That new Attack on Titan game freaks me out

Posted: 20 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

It's not like I was going to sleep tonight, anyway, Attack on Titan.

A handful of audio-less gameplay clips from Koei Tecmo's upcoming PS4, PS3, and PS Vita action game have surfaced on the official Japanese site. Lots of zooming around, slashing titan flesh. A couple of the videos are more mundane and feature the protagonists chatting with one another.

Let's not focus on the mundane.
