| XCOM 2 looks quite nice outdoors Posted: 20 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST Sometimes, I just want to look at the world of XCOM free of distraction. It's quite pleasant, in fact, when you aren't obsessively worrying about the many ways in which your squad can and likely will perish. Or how your never-big-enough organization will die a slow, painful death because of a few rookie calls you made early on that are now catching up with you. But maybe that's just me. At any rate, XCOM 2 is looking nice in these nature screenshots. |
| The next big Steam sales will have more stable discounts Posted: 20 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST Valve is tweaking the way it handles major sales on Steam -- at least the next pair. The upcoming autumn sale (November 25 - December 1) and winter sale (December 22 - January 4) will not feature the limited-time daily deals and flash deals of old, reports Eurogamer. Valve described the scenario in a message to the Steamworks developer group, which read:
My wallet is thankful. The pressure of a timer counting down on flash sales usually chipped away at me and resulted in an impulse buy. There was a sense of urgency. Now, I'm probably going to load up the storefront on the first day of the sale and not return for the duration. Still, I am curious to see how these changes affect sale prices on the whole. No flash or daily deals during Steam autumn, winter sales [Eurogamer] |
| Second Fig crowdfunding campaign Anchors in the Drift failed to meet its goal Posted: 20 Nov 2015 12:44 PM PST I was ready to eat crow at the very beginning of the Anchors in the Drift crowdfunding campaign. After wondering aloud if the general public would get behind paying sizable chunks of money for a free-to-play game, it opened strong with over $70,000 of its $500,000 goal in the first hour. However, most of that money came from the side that makes Fig unique. Only a small percentage of the money came from the crowd; the majority of it came from investors. On that side, rather than receiving the stated rewards, investors stand to make money if the project sees success in the market. So Anchors in the Drift was doomed from the start, because although it had the support of a few wealthy individuals, it couldn't set fire to the masses. In the end, it raised about $5,200 from its 125 traditional backers and more than $100,000 from its investors. After the first Fig campaign for Outer Wilds just barely made its mark of $125,000 and this failed significantly, it brings into question the viability of Fig as a platform. It's a fantastic idea, but it will really need a big success soon in order to prove itself. |
| Hollow Knight could be the next surprise indie hit Posted: 20 Nov 2015 12:20 PM PST The metroidvania-esque Hollow Knight took the Internet by storm yesterday, making it to the front page of reddit at least twice, and it could potentially be the next surprise indie hit following Undertale's recent success. The above trailer has racked up over half a million views since last night and is overwhelmingly upvoted. Hollow Knight has flown under my radar, but the gorgeous art style alone makes me want to play it. The game was funded on Kickstarter way back in December of 2014, and even then it looked pretty solid. I for one am looking forward to giving it a play when it releases for PC, Mac, Linux, and Wii U sometime in 2016. |
| The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth coming to PS4, but other platforms unlikely Posted: 20 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST Afterbirth, the expansion to The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, was released last month for PC users. Owners of Rebirth on other platforms have since been left waiting, but according to a tweet yesterday from Edmund McMillen, the expansion is currently in development for PS4. There's no release date yet, but it's good to know that they're working on it. For everyone else who owns Rebirth on a platform other than PC or PS4, things aren't looking so great. Tyrone Rodriguez of Nicalis tweeted today that they were "evaluating Afterbirth for Wii U, New 3DS and PS Vita," but unfortunately the expansion was "not running at a performance level [he's] happy with." No word yet on the Xbox One version. This is sad news for some Isaac owners. I was hoping all versions of the game would be able to receive the expansion, but it seems the large amount of additional content, which includes over 100 new item combination possibilities, might be a bit too much for some platforms to handle. |
| $299.99 Xbox One confirmed for Black Friday by Microsoft Posted: 20 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST To sway even more gamers into its side of the world, Microsoft has confirmed that for the Black Friday period next week, you'll be able to find select Xbox One bundles at the $299.99 price point at even more retailers. What's interesting in the release is that Microsoft doesn't specify which Xbox bundles will be receiving the $300 treatment, as retailers will of course do their own respective promotion. What you can gleam from the announcement is that the $300 price tag will be on tap at multiple stores, and will be the bare minimum in terms of the deal you should expect. Yes, that means you should expect some even better deals from Microsoft Store, Amazon, Target, Best Buy, et al. come Thursday/Friday next week. For example, along with the $299.99 price tag, we're expecting Microsoft Store to also offer an additional free game or two (as they are currently doing), or $50 in Xbox Live credit. (Remember, Dell is offering a $299 Xbox One with Fallout 4 plus extra controller). Here are the two bundles we think you'll be seeing with the $299.99 price tag at most retailers:
What will be extra sweet come next week is if we start seeing the 1TB models inching their way to the $299.99 price point. We think it's a bit more unlikely, but at the minimum we expect to see additional free games or bonuses attached to the $349.99 1TB bundles. Last deal to note, if you'll be needing a few games along with your shiny new Xbox One, Microsoft has already kicked off Xbox's Black Friday sale, with over 150 games on sale for Gold members. Newcomers to Xbox Live Gold will also be able to try the service out for $1, for the first month of membership. (FYI: there's also currently a $34 deal on 12-month subscription for those interested.) Special pricing on Xbox One runs from Thursday, Nov. 26 through Monday Nov. 30 in the US. For the Xbox Store game deals, deals are open to everyone from Nov. 24 through Nov. 30. |
| Heroes of the Storm is throwing a 50% off sale next week Posted: 20 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST Hey, big spender. You may want to hold off on making any purchases in Heroes of the Storm over the next few days. Blizzard is about to throw a fairly substantial Black Friday sale. From November 24 to December 8, the game's shop will have all heroes, skins, and mounts for half price. That goes for all regions. During this promotion, Blizzard is also going to sell a 360 Day Stimpack "at a deeply discounted price," as well as a Second Chance bundle with: Winter Veil Jaina, Greatfather Winter Rehgar, Reigndeer Mount, Nazeebra Mount, Lunar Tiger Mount, and Magic Carpet Mount. Despite spending only in-game gold on Heroes so far, this sale might prove irresistible. I still have some credit saved up from the absurd Diablo III real-money auction house days. |
| Cut Fallout 4 weapon resurrected by modder Posted: 20 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST From the murky brine of cut content and dummied out items, modder xxdeathknight72xx has returned to the surface with a most intriguing treasure. A curious harpoon gun that never made it into the game proper. The harpoon gun replaces the railway rifle and is functionally very similar -- a big clunky weapon chucking nasty spikes that will pin severed body parts to nearby walls. Oddly enough, air bubbles can be seen escaping the harpoon gun in a few animations, implying that it was originally intended to be used underwater. Did Bethesda have submerged exploration in mind before it realized that underwater areas in games are the worst thing ever and decided against it? Or could this possibly be a hint at future DLC? I'm sure that would make our resident nautical expert Ben Davis happy. If you want to give it a try, you can download this mod for the PC version. If you're playing on one of the console versions, you can pick up the railway rifle and hum the Jaws theme to yourself to approximate the experience. |
| Xbox's Black Friday sale is live, here are all the deals Posted: 20 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST The biggest shopping day of the year starts one week before the biggest shopping day of the year. Some retailers have already begun with the Black Friday consumerism, Amazon probably being the most notable example. Xbox falls into that category too, at least for its most faithful customers. Xbox Live Gold subscribers have access to Xbox's Black Friday sale right now. It includes a ton of discounted games on both Xbox One and Xbox 360. Gold members also get a slightly better price than others. Those without premier status have to wait until next Tuesday to gobble up Xbox's wares. There's an easy workaround, though. Xbox is offering a month of Xbox Live Gold to Silver accounts for $1. That expense would be made up with the saving for purchasing most any game on the list. And, you'd get a couple Games with Gold for your trouble. The full list of Xbox One and Xbox 360 games on sale is below. The promotion runs through November 30, so there's plenty of time to think it over. It's not like Xbox is going to run out of digital goods. Black Friday [Xbox] |
| Does it matter if Link is a boy or a girl? Posted: 20 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST Linkle's debut as a playable character in Hyrule Warriors Legends seems to mean something big to a lot of people, but I guess that's par for course. Regardless of how long it's been since you actually played a Legend of Zelda game, chances are that if you're an adult who's been into games for a while, the series probably means something to you. Not surprisingly, reaction to the character has been pretty mixed. Some who've long wanted for there to be more women protagonists in games in general see Linkle as a faux-attempt at progression, while other see her as something of a step forward. Others who loathe the idea of gaming becoming more "feminized" have been quick to condemn Linkle as "just more pandering to the SJW crowd," while for others the new character is yet another piece of "sexy waifu" fodder for their fantasy fun folders. Part of all the discontent and emotional investment around the prospect of a woman Link comes from the ambiguity that lies at the core of the character. Is Link an individual, or is he (or she) a blank slate avatar meant to represent the player? For years, Nintendo has managed to have its cake and eat it too when answering this question. It may not be able to get away with that for much longer. |
| Bombshell, that female Duke Nukem riff, is coming in January on PC Posted: 20 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST We haven't heard a whole lot out of 3D Realms and Interceptor Entertainment in regards to Bombshell, but now we know when it's expected to drop -- January 29, 2016. That's what the date is for PC at least, as the console iterations will arrive later on in the year, with PS4 and Xbox One versions slated. It'll go for $34.99 with a "digital deluxe" edition (digital soundtrack and artbook, world map overviews, beta access to the "FPS prequel") for $39.99. I don't expect a whole lot out of this project, but I'll give it a shot. |
| Friday Night Fights - Destroy the Rebel scum! Posted: 20 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST I got to play Battlefront at my brothers... It is not the best... It may not even hold a candle to the old ones (2 ftw!). Holy fuck though. The sound, the feel and the looks? Damn. I might have to take this brain-dead, hunk of hotness out for a few dates. By might, I mean definitely. The beta didn't really sell me on it, but the full version and a few matches sure did. Admittedly, I'm a pretty big Star Wars lover and an easy target as I love mp. Speaking of multiplayer and this place, I was recently asked why I thought FNF had died down. Not an easy question to answer honestly. A lot of variables go into such a thing. My best guess is a mix of folks growing up, certain hosts moving on from the site, and the new consoles/Steam upgrades themselves. Now days it doesn't feel like we all have to meet up at a specific place to organize stuff. Friends lists, community hubs, forums and such are all built into platforms (and some cases the games) themselves. It's easier than ever to find people to play with and add them to your roster of buddies. Add to that the fact most of us have kids now, work, and other responsibilities and I think it's rather easy to see why the tumbleweeds blow through here a lot. I don't think we are interacting less with each other though. I interact with Dtoiders past and present every day through Steam/Xbox Live/PSN/Skype, and I'm sure many of you do as well. If not, then get off your rump and join us. It's a blast and there is no reason to restrict it just to Friday's anymore. Which brings me to the reminder that the FNF Blog is not just for Friday. All week you can sign up and try to gather some friends to play with. Don't get discouraged if no one answers right away, it happens. Maybe the days don't line up, whatever. Maybe leave an open invitation, dick pic or some other lure. Either way, let's play together. |
| Bask in the glory of more Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem weirdness Posted: 20 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST More Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem (Genei Ibun Roku #FE in Japan) weirdness awaits. This time, admist the peppered-in combat sequences, there's a commercial for soda, lots of fantastic costumes, and even some anime cutscenes. Tiki (a character that appeared in previous Fire Emblem games) is front and center here, and will be appearing in this new project as a vocaloid creation of sorts. Impressions will start pouring out of Japan soon enough, since the game is set to launch on December 26 of this year on Wii U. |
| Dark Souls III might be the last of the series, as a 'big closure' Posted: 20 Nov 2015 04:15 AM PST From Software's Hidetaka Miyazaki has some sad news for fans of the Souls series -- the upcoming Dark Souls III might be it. Speaking to GameSpot, Miyazaki states, "I don't think it'd be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I'm considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series. That's not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future. Dark Souls 3 will mark the last game where the development project began before I became president. The next title will be a game that was conceived while I was president. I believe that From Software has to create new things. There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of From Software." It sounds pretty cut and dry. At first I thought "hey maybe he won't mention Bloodborne," but there it is front and center. I definitely sympathize with creators in situations like this. This is Miyazaki's passion project, and much like Kojima with Metal Gear, he can't seem to escape it. I know he has a ton of other great ideas brewing in that ingenious mind of his, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings. And if that future involves a revival somewhere down the line of the Souls series much like how it revived the spirit of King's Field, so be it. | Review: Renowned Explorers: International Society Posted: 20 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST I'm glad I stuck Renowned Explorers out. For the first couple hours it was kind of a slog. Not exactly bad, but dense, unwieldy, and unexciting. I would finish an expedition and quit, not wanting to get back to it until days later, forcing myself to play for this review. Then the other night, something clicked. The interactions between all of the different resources started to make sense. The nuance of the combat revealed itself. I finished an expedition and then immediately started a new one. I finished a full run and then immediately started a new one of those. Once I got into it, it wasn't half bad. |
| Republique is coming to the PS4 in physical form Posted: 20 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST Republique is such a weird project. It was released on iOS in December of 2013, as an episodic series spanning five chapters. Episode 4 and 5 still have not been released to this day, but the franchise made the jump to PC, and PS4. It got to the point where I completely lost interest in the story somewhere in 2014, and now, Atlus is partnering with GungHo to produce a physical version in stores next year for PS4. I'm still waiting on the final two chapters. At this point I don't know if I even want to replay the first three again just to refresh my memory, let alone restart a brand new file on consoles. |
| Project X Zone 2 pre-order bonuses include a challenge stage Posted: 20 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST Pre-order bonuses, as a rule, are pretty scummy. I get that publishers really need that cash now, but providing in-game incentives, some of which are not sold later (or, even crazier, just included in the game -- weird, I know), is not good. It's hard to get hopping mad about this Project X Zone 2 content though. For pre-ordering, you'll get a challenge stage, a Sun Sword item, a 3DS theme, and two in-game accessories. Starter items are usually eclipsed after a few hours, and considering the sheer amount of content this sequel promises, I'm not sweating one stage. So if you want it, it's there. You have until February 16, 2016 to decide. |
| It looks like Guilty Gear Xrd Sign will be coming to PC Posted: 20 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST A lot of fighting games have been coming to Steam this past year, including Guilty Gear XX. It seems as if publisher H2 Interactive isn't done with the series yet, as Guilty Gear Xrd has been listed on the Korean Game Rating database for PC. This is odd timing, as the follow-up, Revelator, was just confirmed for an international release this week. This listing is for Sign, which is the base game. We've reached out for comment, but H2 will likely be sharing the news at some point in the near future. |
| Does anyone like Zidane? I don't hear him talked about much Posted: 20 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST Whenever the "best" Final Fantasy discussion comes up, VI is almost always near the top for a reason. Then you start getting into uncharted territory, with games like V and VII getting thrown around. But one I see most often is IX, which is pretty much beloved by everyone. At the same time, I don't see anyone praising Zidane as part of the reason why they like IX. I'm similar in a way, in that I do like IX (I'd probably place it in the mid-upper echelon), but I don't think of Zidane often, and cite Vivi and other cast members as my core reason for enjoying it. I'm curious though, what people think of ol' Zidane. |
| Telltale's Game of Thrones is getting a second season Posted: 20 Nov 2015 01:30 AM PST After finishing the season finale for Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series, I had my suspicions that it was all setting up for an inevitable second season. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner confirmed that would be the case.
It's no surprise considering how big of a property Game of Thrones is and how much was left open at the end of The Ice Dragon. (I'm still bitter that Gared's story was essentially pointless throughout Season One, but Bruner hints that it's still building up for a revelation in the future.) It's sort of a shame that this second-tier Telltale series is getting more attention right away, where we haven't heard anything yet about the future of the consistently excellent Tales from the Borderlands series. I know there are some The Wolf Among Us fans out there who are even more indignant, having waited even longer without any mention of more. Bruner goes into more detail about the future of Game of Thrones in the Hollywood Reporter interview. Click through at your own peril; it's rife with spoilers for Season One. | Yakuza: Kiwami looks dope as hell, super weird Posted: 20 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST Sega just dropped a new trailer for Yakuza: Kiwami, and it looks awesome. There's plenty of new features afoot, including new combat abilities and minigames. I love the balance this series always struck with insanity and GTA-style overworld exploration. In case you're confused, Yakuza: Kiwami is what Sega is calling the remake of the original Yakuza, and it's hitting PS3 and PS4 in January 2016 in Japan. It'll also bundle in a voucher code for the Yakuza 6 demo. |
| Sony working on PlayStation 2 emulation for PS4 Posted: 20 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST The PlayStation 4 can play PlayStation 2 games. The same special Battlefront bundle that includes Super Star Wars also includes Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, not as ports, but running as emulated PS2 games (in this case, potentially at higher resolutions). Sony confirmed as much curtly, saying, "We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time." If Sony can draw on the 1,850 PS2 games, it could put the Xbox One's backward compatibility to shame. Though it also remains to be seen -- and we seem far out from an answer -- if, say, this just means another store section opening up with which to buy things or if you can load up the new console with old PS2 discs. | Bungie flip-flops, nerfs Pulse Rifles in Destiny right after buffing them Posted: 19 Nov 2015 11:30 PM PST On the next episode of "as the nerf turns," it looks like Bungie is making pulse rifles and shotguns less effective in its big December update for Destiny. This follows an update in the 2.0 edition that actually made pulse rifles not terrible, and a similar update halfway into the 1.0 version's lifecycle that also made shotguns viable. Additionally, auto rifles are being buffed slightly, as well as hand cannons. Sniper rifles, sidearms, and fusion rifles are roughly staying the same. It's always interesting to see that Bungie can't alter weapon properties separately for PVP and PVE modes, even though that system is already set up. As soon as they balance something for one mode, it suffers in an other, and the cycle continues. It would make sense to just balance both once and for all, but it's probably easier to switch things up so people keep playing. Destiny Weapon Tuning – December Update [Bungie.net] |
| A nice big 9GB patch just landed for Bloodborne Posted: 19 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST If you're an avid Bloodborne fan eagerly awaiting more content, you're likely already aware that The Old Hunters is just four days away from launch. What you might not have been aware of is that a 9GB patch for the game landed today. While much of the patch is dedicated to preparing for the DLC, according to a translation of the Japanese patch notes, it also contains a few other updates and additions. There's a new covenant available, new co-op partners, an ancient summoning bell for chalice dungeons and more. Chalice dungeons are also getting some updates to their functionality. For the full translated patch notes, take a look here. So, are you feeling pumped for more Bloodborne? Ready for it to kick your ass again? |
| There's a Fallout 4 patch hitting PC next week Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST It's no secret that Fallout 4 is pretty damn buggy. Bethesda open world RPGs are not known for technical polish, and the development team knows that well. Thankfully, the first patch for the game will be rolling out next week on PC. While Bethesda has not detailed what fixes will be coming in the patch, it has said it will initially be a beta patch on Steam, then a full PC patch, then later a patch for consoles. Apparently, this pathway for patch releases is going to be the standard for Fallout 4. So, what do YOU want to see fixed in this patch? |
| Primal Carnage: Extinction EU/AUS release date confirmed Posted: 19 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST Primal Carnage: Extinction is coming to PS4s in Europe and Australasia next Tuesday, November 24, 2015. Though the price has yet to be confirmed, the game - which hits PSN two weeks after the North American release - sells for $20 Stateside. Here, have a video and gorge on all that dino-flavoured carnage. When we reviewed the original game back in 2012, we said that: "Primal Carnage contains a feeling that I can't quite put my finger on. You'll need a decent team makeup and some good communication to really sense it, but trust me: it is there. It's a warm feeling, one that lets you know everything is going to be OK. It tingles up your spine and into your brain just to whisper "Hey, not all multiplayer dinosaur games have to suck."" HAPPY FRIDAY! <3 |
| Why doesn't Rockstar release a new GTA game every year? Posted: 19 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, has opened up about why it does not annualise the release its biggest titles like Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, and Red Dead Redemption. Talking at MKM Partners Investor Day in New York City (via Gamespot), Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that annual releases can "[burn] off your intellectual property" and reduce demand and quality, reducing their capacity to be "massive consumer events". |
| Kinect creative director Kudo Tsunoda has left Xbox, but not Microsoft Posted: 19 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST Kudo Tsunoda, the creative director behind the Kinect since back when it was known as Project Natal, has left the Xbox division of Microsoft to work on non-gaming projects for the company. You might know him as the “Well BAM! There it is!” guy from E3 a few years back. An email sent out to employees by Microsoft Windows and Devices Group’s vice president Terry Myerson confirmed that Tsunoda would no longer be involved in Kinect development, and would instead be working on things such as Microsoft Edge and the HoloLens. Tsunoda will be tasked with refining ways of interacting with these devices through voice and gesture, so there’s certainly some overlap with what he did with the Kinect. As well as the Kinect, Tsunoda also led various first party Xbox development studios such as Rare, Lionhead, and Twisted Pixel. Replacing him will be Hanno Lemke, general manager of Microsoft Studios Europe, and Shannon Loftis, general manager of Microsoft Studios Publishing. Both have already had plenty of experience managing the same studios Tsunoda did, so this probably isn’t the earthquake it could’ve been. It looks like this might be the final nail in the coffin for the Kinect. | Game with the devs of WH40K: Regicide again! Posted: 19 Nov 2015 06:30 PM PST Hammerfall Publishing, the awesome folks behind Warhammer 40K: Regicide, want to play with you again! We somehow didn't deter them last time! What is Regicide you ask (again, I might add)? It's about the bloodiest, most amazing take on chess that I've seen. It has two modes. Classic mode follows old-school chess rules, but more murder-y. Regicide mode let's you plan your strategy and utilize tactical abilities (and some crazy powers too) to wipe your enemies clean off the board. Game has online and single player, as well as letting you choose either the Space Marines or the Orks! Why listen to my little blurb? Watch the gameplay video below and then go play with the fine folks who made it! This is all going down at 3pm PST on Sunday the 22nd. It will be on the game's Twitch channel here. Join in the chat to play or shoot them an email here, to setup something in advance. I will be in chat, there might be the handing out of some game codes and even some hoodies (dat Spush Mareeen one)! |
| Video, screens offer better look at PS4's Valkyria: Azure Revolution Posted: 19 Nov 2015 06:05 PM PST So I jumped the gun yesterday when I said Valkyria: Azure Revolution and Valkyria Chronicles Remaster (PS4) news was petering off. Yesterday's plain, boring website is now home to a bunch of new screens, the first footage of the game, and some mondo chest bags. The three apparent main characters have names, too: Amleth, Ophelia, and Brunhild. Does that mean smaller parties instead of a whole squad? Earlier reports did hint at more of an RPG lean this time around, though I much prefer the first game's threaded battles. Leave it to Sega to announce a game and show it off three days later. Hopefully all this salivating is proof enough that the strategy spin off is ripe for a Western release. |
