Amazon will hand-deliver you a copy of Black Ops III at midnight Posted: 02 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST If you live in a city that supports Amazon's Prime Now app, you will be able to have another human being hand-deliver a copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops III directly to your door when the game launches on November 6. For those unfamiliar with Prime Now, it's an app that allows Amazon Prime users to have certain items delivered directly to their door for free. I've used it for groceries before, and the process is about as convenient as your average pizza delivery service. (Of course, that depends on your area -- pizza delivery in LA is a perpetual crapshoot.) Ads for the app make it seem more impressive than it really is, which should be a shock to nobody. It's more of a four-hour delivery time with a specific window. Then you have to contend with at least a 20% tip if you're not a jerk, and potential delivery fees. If you want to make a person bring a single video game to your residence, you have to make a pre-order through the Amazon Prime Now app on November 4 after midnight eastern time. And be quick about it, because there are only so many people and so many copies of Black Ops III. Based on my experience with Prime Now, expect to get your copy between 2 AM and 4 AM. According to the Amazon press release, eligible cities are: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, Minneapolis, Orange County, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. That sounds about right.
Super cute Japanese cat-collecting game now in English Posted: 02 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST Step 1: Place playthings and snacks in your yard. Step 2: Wait for cats to visit! That's advice for Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector (iOS, Android) and life in general. As of a recent update, the Japanese app is now also in English. It's super simple -- you mainly tap on menus to buy and place items, watch cats that come to play, and occasionally snap photos -- but the little guys are just so adorable. I'm currently looking at a satisfied fat cat named Tubbs. Neko Atsume is the kind of game you'll want to check on throughout the day, and that's by design. Something sweet to lift me up after I waste my hearts in Pokémon Shuffle.
Latest Warcraft movie poster drops the giant shoulder armor Posted: 02 Nov 2015 12:30 PM PST Fresh or rotten, I suspect I'll wind up watching Warcraft in a theater. We're many months out from the June 10, 2016 release of the film, but we're only a few days away from the "worldwide debut" of the first trailer. Until then, here's a new poster. It's better than the last two, wouldn't you agree?
You can play Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time on a watch Posted: 02 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST While on one hand I don't understand purchasing a smart watch or most "wearable" tech, on the other, I have to admit amusement at one of these devices -- an older model, to boot -- being capable of running N64 games. YouTube's Hacking Jules got both Super Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time running on an LG G Watch W100. While using the virtual controls on that tiny touchscreen isn't ideal for playing either of these games, it's a pretty neat exercise and an example of how dramatically technology advances.
Giant Street Fighter graffiti towers over Tokyo Posted: 02 Nov 2015 11:30 AM PST E. Honda is big in Japan thanks to German graffiti artist Andreas von Chrzanowski, known as CASE. CASE is known for his big art and his latest towering piece is so different, as he spent a day last week painting this 12 story Street Fighter character near the Tennōzu Isle Station in Shinagawa, Tokyo.
Kojima shows how he made Metal Gear Solid V's 'Nuclear' trailer Posted: 02 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST Few trailers rival the "Nuclear" video for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I must've watched it half a dozen times when it debuted last year at E3, and probably doubled that number leading up to the game's release in September. What a masterful pairing of music and imagery. "I won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea. I will always be with you." That line sparked my imagination. I obsessively pieced together the clues, themes, and fan speculation to form my own narrative for The Phantom Pain. It was such a fun mental exercise. It's strange to look back on this footage now. Some of the scenes didn't even make it into the game, while others occur far later than originally expected. It's also surprising how many story beats are shown here (albeit without full context to know what, exactly, they mean). Last year, Kojima Productions put out an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the "Nuclear" trailer, but it was in Japanese. Devoted fans have since come out with a translation.
Here's the new Xbox One dashboard and how it works Posted: 02 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST Come November 12, Xbox One users will see a major overhaul to the system's interface. That's because the New Xbox One Experience will have launched, and it largely does away with the layout that has graced the console for the past two years. Changes are scary, but we can get through them together. To help prepare you for the update, Microsoft has released two videos that outline how the Xbox One's Home and Guide sections work. Intuitive has never been used to explain the Xbox One's UI, and that more or less remains the case. It'll take a bit of getting used to and a few "how the fuck do I..." moments. I've had the new dashboard for almost a month now through the Preview program. I'm still not sure what I think of it. It can be sluggish at times (particularly the Guide), and that's usually immediately after booting up the console. But, it probably makes more sense than the old layout, which took a lot of time to get used to. This one also has a learning curve, but it's not as steep or long. Hey, at least we get backward compatibility out of this update.
Dang! Watch an Alien-inspired, professional Metroid short film Posted: 02 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST Nintendo doesn't much care to do anything with Metroid save for soccer games, so here's a professional grade Metroid production, The Sky Calls. I was a bit dismissive of this for about as long as it took to see those excellent title cards and appreciate the post-processing put into capturing the 70's sci-fi vibe that I love. The description notes, "2001, Alien, and Solaris" as influences and it shows, eschewing modern, sterile sci-fi for a style, "more in tune with the themes that inspired the first Metroid game in 1986: isolation, exploration, and the wonders of deep space." Jessica Chobot -- more like Ridleyssica Chozo, am I right! -- stars as the titular Metroid, Sam Balcomb directs. Really impressive effort.
Xenoblade Chronicles X's Best Buy pre-order bonus is...pizza? Posted: 02 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST Move over Fallout 4 socks, Best Buy has topped itself in mere weeks. If you pre-order upcoming Wii U exclusive Xenoblade Chronicles X at Best Buy, it comes with "$10 ePizza Cash Presell Gift." What? Well, it's a bit more confusing than getting a pizza should be. You have to pre-order at least a day ahead of its December 4 launch and the pizza cash is limited to the regular version of the game, so no collector's version and pizza. When you complete your purchase, you'll get a code that you can enter here; it currently just says, "Come back December 4 to get your $10 Pizza Cash." The code is redeemable through 1/14/16 and the subsequent voucher is valid through 1/31/16. You'll have to print out your $10 coupon and "redeem at any participating pizza restaurant in the U.S. that accepts MasterCard." Always a catch.
It's no mistake that Sony isn't showing us more of The Last Guardian Posted: 02 Nov 2015 09:15 AM PST Sony gave us a look at the long-awaited The Last Guardian at E3 -- just enough to whet our appetite. Confirming that "Yes, it definitely still exists," we were shown seven minutes of boy palling around with bird-dog-thing. It wasn't meaningful outside of the context of, again, "Yes it definitely still exists." That was all by design. In an interview with GameSpot, PlayStation head Shuhei Yoshida said that Sony's intentionally withholding footage because of the nature of the game. "Development is going well, but because it's all about the story, we don't want to show too much," Yoshida remarked. He continued "We wanted to show that it exists, it works, it runs. It's not like we won't show anything before launch, but I think we will try to limit what we show about the game." That's not much of a departure from the past several years. At this point, we've been conditioned to not expect to see footage of The Last Guardian. That's why when Tokyo Game Show and Paris Games Week go by without any news, it's pretty easy to accept -- even if we all just want to see some more running, jumping, and climbing with bird-dog-thing. Last Guardian Footage Purposefully Being Held Back, Here's Why [GameSpot]
How to bang your dragon: Dragon dating sim revived Posted: 02 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST "I'm imagining the beginning to Stand By Me, but, instead, 'Hey, kid, you ever plow a dragon?'" Crude. But that's what I had to say about Dragon Dating Simulator last year. The project ultimately missed its funding goal, only raising €3,925 out of €8,000. But now it's back, with a new campaign (it already hit its reduced €4,000 goal), new art, a new theme song, and a new name, Angels with Scaly Wings. I kind of imagined their wings to be more bat-like, but I guess scaly wings is more in line with popular dragon representation, despite presenting some aerodynamic problems. Angels with Scaly Wings, now on Greenlight, has a playable demo and boasts "4 potential love interests (2 male, 2 female)" as well as "Shorter, one-off romances with secondary characters."
| Black Ops III embracing mods on PC next year Posted: 02 Nov 2015 08:45 AM PST Call of Duty: Black Ops III is going to look a whole lot different next year on PC. Series fans have wanted robust mod support for years now, and Treyarch is listening. Players will be able to create not only maps in Black Ops III, but whole modes. Lots of potential for remixing existing content (Zombies, Freerun) or spinning it off into something unrecognizable. There aren't many specifics yet, but this is what we do know:
That's the plan today, anyway. It may change, for better or worse, as we move into 2016. Modding & Mapping Tools Coming to Black Ops 3 PC in 2016! [Treyarch] |
What Fallout 4 might have looked like in 1984 Posted: 02 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST Eight more days 'til Fallout 4, Fallout 4. Fallout 4. Eight more days 'til Fallout 4, Sil-ver Shamrock! Chiptunes group 8 Bit Weapon decided to mock up what Fallout 4 might look like if it were made in 1984 open-source editor called Outlaw Editor. It's even running on an Apple II, which only allows for black, white, green, purple, orange, and blue. Sometimes limitations create great art. You might also enjoy this Fallout 4 mock-up from a few months ago done in the style of the original games.
Posted: 02 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST I can remember building sandcastles in San Francisco's wonderfully-named Ocean Beach when I was young, armed with just one bucket with an embattled parapet mold to give the formations that distinct "castle" look, and another large blue bucket with a white hose. An enterprising scamp (read: lazy), of course I would build close enough to the water that I could efficiently refill my hose bucket without a lot of walking. And I can remember the dread when idiot child me, who did not know about tides, turned around to find the vast slush of ocean lapping at my castle door. Panic. Moats were dug not to thwart would-be invaders, but natural disaster, rerouting the encroaching water around my creation. Eventually it would not be enough, my monument consumed by the unfeeling waves. Nothing lasts.
The Xbox One wireless PC adapter works like a charm Posted: 02 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST Finally -- Microsoft is releasing the wireless Xbox One adapter for PCs. After years of waiting I can finally eschew all of the wires that have been sitting in my desk drawer, or more specifically, four micro-USB cables to hook up four applicable controllers. The Xbox One controller really is, in my mind, the best remote of this generation, so I opt to use it more often than anything else, including the 360 pad. After obtaining my unit I proceeded to plug it in, press the sync button, and I was good to go. This particular adapter works for up to four controllers per USB stick, and each remote synced up in roughly two seconds time. Additionally, I tested it out with an Xbox One Elite model, which also worked without issue. The stick itself is a tad bigger than I'd like it to be, but it's a much more form factor and snug design compared to the oval 360 wireless adapter. I should note that it worked seamlessly due to Windows 10, and that prior platforms don't seem to be fully supported, including SteamOS and the Steam Link (even after a lengthy driver install, it didn't register on my Windows 8 machine). Oh, and Xbox 360 remotes aren't backward compatible either. If you're interested in one, it's currently being sold for $24.99 nearly everywhere.
BioWare store celebrates N7 day with new gear and a 20% discount Posted: 02 Nov 2015 07:15 AM PST Remember when BioWare declared November the 7th a worldwide celebration of all things Mass Effect? Yeah, me neither. This year however, it might be worth paying attention to the faux-holiday. To hype up the event, the BioWare Store is having a store-wide sale offering 20% off many of their items, just in time for Christmas. This week will also see the release of several new articles of Mass Effect branded clothes. The new N7 gear will include some red striped sneakers, a necklace replica of a Mass Relay, a reversible Paragon/Renegade hoodie, a whole new line of women's N7 gear including sweaters, cardigans, and leggings, and last but certainly not least, an N7 fleece onesie. I'd like to think the best part of being a galaxy saving Spectre is being issued premium pajamas branded with your special operations tag. Who wouldn't want to unwind after a long day of shooting Geth and wrestling Krogans by snuggling up in some PJs and watching some space-Netflix? Check out the gallery below for a peek at some of the new items that will be hitting the store this week.
Southern Nuzleaf and other odd Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon characterizations Posted: 02 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST What would Pikachu sound like if it could talk? I don't mean its "pika pika" parlor trick, but what if you asked it which Steve Zahn movie it liked best, or if it knows how to change a car's air filter? Pokémon offers only a few talking creatures, mostly in animated films. So there's the conniving Meowth or the hurt, serious Mewtwo, but what the heck does a Nuzleaf sound like? Well, according to the writers (and subsequent localization crew) of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, he's a genteel southerner throwing around 'I reckon's to flavor his great lines like, "These mystery dungeons sure are mysterious alright."
I really wish the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon was more like the original pitch Posted: 02 Nov 2015 06:45 AM PST Back in 2011, the original pitch for the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon was found. Simply put, it looked pretty great, and was faithful to the source material. Instead, we got a weird "super fighting robot" rendition that was goofy as hell, often times in all the wrong ways. Thankfully KeijiDragon and the folks over at Rockman Corner have restored the original to a much more presentable format, by way of tracking down the original VHS tape. Give it a watch and reminisce on what might have been.
Tribes Ascend dev releases past Tribes for free Posted: 02 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST Lot of out of the blue Tribes news this year. Developer Hi-Rez released its appropriately named "Out of the Blue" update to Tribes Ascend after two years of nada back in September. Now, each entry in the series joins Ascend in being free. That includes the Earthsiege games and even the PS2 game Tribes: Aerial Assault. Yes, a developer is giving you its decade-plus old PS2 game for free on PC for kicks. Well, for good will and to invigorate its newest iteration, too, I'm sure.
Star Wars: The Old Republic's latest expansion marks the best the game has ever been Posted: 02 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST Man, I'm surprised Star Wars: The Old Republic is still trucking along. You have to give it to BioWare (and to some extent, EA) for staying with it after its mixed reception at launch, so-so expansion packs, and its transition into free-to-play. I was there day one, and promptly quit after reaching level 50 as there wasn't really a whole lot to do after I had experienced a few of the stories. But with the newest Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion that launched last week, I'm back in, dabbling a bit with old and new characters alike. It's a marked improvement.
| PlayStation's holding another press briefing this week Posted: 02 Nov 2015 05:45 AM PST After skipping out on gamescom, Sony took center stage at both Tokyo Game Show and Paris Games Week within the past couple months. Those major showings seemingly weren't enough as PlayStation has yet another press briefing up its sleeve. This one's for the South Koreans. A new page on the Korean PlayStation site tells of a November 4 presser in time for this year's G-STAR convention in Busan, South Korea. G-STAR doesn't actually begin until November 12. There's no real indication why the event's happening a week earlier than we'd expect. There's also no real indication as to what we can expect from this show. PlayStation VR is listed on the presser's page, but that's it. It will probably be thick with localization news and maybe word of a new MMO or something. Sony can't have that much more to talk about, especially given that it'll want to save something for PlayStation Experience which is happening early next month. We'll find out if that's the case in just a day's time. This all kicks off at 10:30 am in Korea, which, for those Stateside, is 5:30 Pacific on November 3. The whole shindig's streaming online (as these things do), but we'll also be here to cover it in case you like your information in word form. We always got your back on that front, friends. | Die nasty: League of Legends sees first two-time World Champion Posted: 02 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST In the League of Legends World Championship's fifth year, the contest saw a first: 2013 winners SK Telecom T1 became the first League of Legends team to win the game's top tourney twice. SK Telecom T1 actually debuted in 2013 as a relatively no-name team en route to a surprise 2013 championship. In this latest run, they almost went undefeated across several European venues, finally dropping a game against runners-up KOO Tigers in the finals before winning it all for the team's second $1 million prize in the last three seasons. SK Telecom T1's Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok also ate raw broccoli on stage after the win, a reference to comments that his hair looks like the vegetable. |
Final Fantasy XIV's patch 3.1 will once again feature Knights of the Round Posted: 02 Nov 2015 05:15 AM PST I haven't been playing Final Fantasy XIV as much as I'd like, mostly due to the content drought and other obligations. But that will change when patch 3.1 hits, which is set to bring a ton of new activities to the game. One of the biggest additions is the Diadem area, which is basically a free roaming zone that can be played solo or with friends. There's also new story missions, new Gold Saucer games, two additional dungeons, extra Vanu Vanu tribe quests, primal encounters (a reworked Knights of the Round fight from the main scenario quest), a 24-man raid similar to the Crystal Tower series (Void Ark), and a ton of quality of life adjustments. I really dig how much they've changed boss fights in dungeons over the past year or so, and the Pharos Sirius hard mode fights look pretty amazing. What I'm most excited for however is the Void Ark, which will be really easy to pick up and play.
XCOM 2 Dark Events offer 'dramatic gameplay changes' Posted: 02 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST One of my favorite things about XCOM: Enemy Unknown was that it lets you fail, so I kind of love that XCOM 2's canon centers around the Commander having failed in the first go and now needing to oust our alien overloads off of Earth. Firaxis has just detailed the sequel's Dark Events, black ops projects under Advent, the human group working with the alien invaders. As you gain more sway and reclaim swaths of Earth, Advent becomes worried it's losing its grip on the world and begins to work against the XCOM project. "[Dark Events] run the gamut from something as small as improving Advent soldiers’ gear in the field to more dramatic gameplay changes such as deploying a UFO that will hunt the Avenger. Advent can also negatively affect XCOM supply drops and, in a far more chilling Dark Event, hide extra Faceless amongst the populace of each mission. Rapid Response poses another massive threat to XCOM, guaranteeing Advent reinforcements will be deployed during all Guerrilla Ops missions. We've also heard reports of Advent employing Viper Rounds—poisonous ammunition made from Viper venom." Can't wait, can't wait. XCOM 2 was delayed to February 5, 2016.
Metal Gear Solid V is $40 as Amazon's daily Gold Box deal Posted: 02 Nov 2015 04:46 AM PST It seems like you can't throw a proverbial rock on the Internet without hitting some games site talking about Mother Bases and D-Walkers and kidnapping via weather balloon. That's all Metal Gear Solid V speak and there's a lot there to digest. If you're in the dark maybe Amazon can help shed some light in a cost-effective way. As part of its Gold Box daily deal promotion, Amazon has Metal Gear Solid V discounted to $40, down from its usual $60. PC doesn't quite make the cut, as the sale is only for PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Still, that's a fair little savings on a title that's sure to be at the center of a lot of Game of the Year conversations. Metal Gear Solid V [Amazon]
PSA: Grab your free November Games With Gold titles now Posted: 02 Nov 2015 04:45 AM PST The new round of Xbox Games With Gold offerings are upon us, and you can now pick up Dirt 3 for Xbox 360 and Pneuma: Breath of Life on Xbox One. In case you're curious, Dirt 3 was fairly well received by racing fans everywhere, but Breath of Life hasn't rated all that well. On November 16, Dungeon Siege III for Xbox 360 and Knight Squad for Xbox One will take over. The former has its problems, but I'd highly recommend it as a free download for a mindless rainy afternoon.
No Halloween plans? Steam hits new user record over weekend Posted: 02 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST Steam is continuing its trend of increasing concurrent players and breaking past service records every few months. Just in June it was exciting to see Steam hit 10 million users using the service at the same time. This Halloween marked a new peak, with almost 12.6 million users all logged in at once. The most played games were, again, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, and Grand Theft Auto V. So, who was playing PC games on Halloween and not getting drunk on room temperature pumpkin beer and then getting late-nite tikka masala (after having Japanese curry for dinner)?
Posted: 02 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST The first time I played Poncho was at EGX around two years ago. Its unique visual identity, compelling set of gameplay mechanics, and endearing protagonist drew my attention among the crowd of other indie games playable at the show. Unfortunately, poor puzzle execution and technical issues marred my experience. I was rather excited to see code for Poncho arrive in the Destructoid office. Having not looked at the game for almost two years, I was interested in attesting to how the finished product turned out. Unfortunately, my impression hasn't changed much in two years. Poncho has a lot going for it, but it also has some pretty glaring caveats to any recommendation I might possibly give it.
Gunman Clive creator releases ROM of his game on Game Boy Color Posted: 02 Nov 2015 03:45 AM PST Bertil Hörberg has accomplished quite a bit in such a short amount of time. As a one-man show he released his creations on multiple platforms, and even collected them in HD on the Wii U. Gunman Clive might not be the most fully-featured platformer out there, but it's a wonderful homage to the retro era, and worth playing, especially for the few bucks he charges for it. His newest project is decidedly even more retro flavored, as he's crafted a playable ROM for the Game Boy Color (or any Game Boy model and emulator, actually). It runs at 60fps and only features one level as a demo of sorts, but still it's a really cool sentiment. Game Boy [Gunman Clive]
Call of Duty double dips its brush with live-action Black Ops III trailer Posted: 02 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST It wouldn't be a Black Ops release without a celebrity-laden live-action trailer to air during the sports. This times its Michael "Where's Wallace?" Jordan telling the legend of Kevin, who kills people with cyber bees while eating sandwiches and shows up Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. Well, at least until Cara Delevingne shows up. But man, I got to imagine there are one or two other songs with "black" in the title Call of Duty could use. "Man in Black." "Slick Black Cadillac." "Black Skinhead." Maybe be a little more subtle and take something off Black on Both Sides.
