Emily is Away's AOL-style chat hits eerily close to home

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST

The tagline for Emily is Away is what got me to try it out. "Relive your awkward teenage years." Sure, that sounds like a blast.

It's a short text adventure set in the early 2000s and made to look like AOL Instant Messenger. (Yes, that was my real AIM screen name in the header image.) What struck me immediately was how closely the dates mirrored my life experience. If it's autobiographical, I'd guess designer Kyle Seeley is just a year older than I am.

What struck me later was how other bits of the story applied to me as well. I responded as I would have in that situation and the branching pathways took me to a place I've already been. Drifting slowly away from a girl I cared about, separated by time and space and growing up. On the one hand it's almost eerie, like it was loosely based on my own life. On the other hand, it's kind of reassuring, evidence that I'm not the only person to have those experiences.

Emily is Away releases on Steam on Friday and it is totally free. If you were also an awkward college kid 10 years ago, you too might see yourself in it.

A tranquil moment with The Witness

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

We're not far from the January 26, 2016 release of The Witness (PC, PS4), but going off this latest blog post from designer Jonathan Blow, there's plenty of work left to be done on the puzzling adventure. The first test readings with the actors haven't even started yet! (They begin tomorrow.)

Scanning the post, I was most interested to learn that "there is (almost) no music in the game," and there never will be. It's a stylistic choice.

According to Blow, "If we slather on a layer of music that is just arbitrarily playing, and not really coming from the world, then we're adding a layer of stuff that works against the game." So instead of focusing on that, the team "put a great deal of care into the sounds of the world around you."

Here's a sample.

How to make sure you're extra super dead in Fallout 4

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs floating in a lake? Bob! What do you call a man with no arms and no legs outside a door? Matt! What do you call a man with no arms and no legs flying across a post-apocalyptic wasteland?

I...I don't have a dad joke for that one.

Resident Evil 6 re-release on PS4, Xbox One seems imminent

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST

Want to feel old? Resident Evil 6 (PS3, 360, PC) is three years old. The last mainline Resident Evil received a pretty mixed reception and the only new entry planned for next year's 20th anniversary year is the multiplayer shooter Biohazard: Umbrella Corps.

We still seem far from Resident Evil 7 if recent Capcom comments are any indication. Meanwhile, though, Capcom seems content with re-releasing past games in the series. The Korean Game Rating Board rated Resident Evil 6 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as spotted by Gematsu. Probably means a Resident Evil 6 current gen release is on its way. The same ratings board leaked the HD versions of Resident Evil: Revelations in 2012.

Afro Samurai 2 pulled from PSN, publisher apologizes for game

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 12:30 PM PST

Remember Afro Samurai 2? I'm sure our very own Chris Carter wishes he could forget after reviewing the game. He gave it the lowest score possible, citing bugs and terrible audio and gameplay.

All mention of the episodic title has been pulled from the PlayStation Store for PS4. The game was removed from the libraries of those who purchased it, and their money was refunded. No statement on exactly why this happened was known, until now.

This Hotline Miami sale supports the musicians

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

The music for Hotline Miami has stuck with me like few other video game soundtracks. Carpenter Brut, M|O|O|N, Perturbator, and Magic Sword all in one brutal, high-octane place. It's exceptional.

While the games have been discounted numerous times before, I feel like this weekend's Steam sale is worth highlighting given that 100 percent of Dennaton Games' revenue will go to "the individual musicians behind the series' celebrated soundtracks as thanks for their contributions."

Very cool. The discounts -- Hotline Miami ($2.49), HM OST ($2.49), Hotline Miami 2 ($8.99), HM2 OST ($8.99) -- are active until November 23.

Arkham Knight won't support multiple GPUs

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 11:30 AM PST

The PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight went back up on Steam a few weeks ago. There are still issues even after the re-listing, and the developers are still trying to address them, but there are some they "cannot fix." One such problem, it turns out, is SLI and Crossfire support.

Responding to a forum thread requesting a status update on support for multiple GPUs, a representative of Warner Bros. commented:

"Hi BLOOD & HONOR,

We've been working with our development and graphics driver partners over the last few months to investigate utilizing multi-GPU support within Batman: Arkham Knight. The result was that even the best case estimates for performance improvements turned out to be relatively small given the high risk of creating new issues for all players. As a result we've had to make the difficult decision to stop work on further multi-GPU support. We are disappointed that this was not practical and apologize to those who have been waiting for this feature."

Uh, yeah. Don't forget that you have until the end of the year to request a refund.

GameBarcodes distill games down frame by frame

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

A couple weeks ago an imgur page was floating around the Internet showing various films with each frame reduced to its average color and represented as a single vertical line in what turn out to be often vibrant barcodes. This is not exactly that same process, but a similar idea as applied to video games.

Alan Zucconi ripped frame data from Let's Plays of various games. He gives a tutorial how to do it on his site. Instead of taking the average color, his algorithm tabulates all of the colors and arranges them into a vertical slice, giving it more of a painted look than a hard barcode look, but it's still striking.

My favorite of the bunch is Journey's, because it works as a retelling of the game. You can see how it starts in the deserts, treks through the underground, and ends on the snowy peaks, all from one image.

Others are not so pretty. For all the praise Bloodborne gets, it makes for just about the dullest, drabbest barcode. 0rbitalis is also a strange choice, considering how much of it takes place against a black background.

PS4 gets Beyond: Two Souls next week, Heavy Rain in March

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST

If a "huge portion" of PlayStation 4 owners never played something as universally liked as The Last of Us, I wonder how many of them missed out on Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain. "Enough," I suppose. Both games are being remastered for the system.

Beyond ($29.99) is up first, on November 24, with updated graphics, improved controls for action sequences, the option to play missions in chronological order from the start, and the Enhanced Experiments DLC included. There's also that "see the decisions other players made" feature that has become something of a tradition in modern adventure gaming. I love that thing!

As for the Heavy Rain remaster, it's not out until March 1, 2016.

"[T]hose who purchase Beyond: Two Souls digitally will be entitled to download Heavy Rain on PS4 when it releases at a discount," says Quantic Dream. I'm more interested in Detroit, myself.

No one's talking about Square's new Chrono Trigger inspired PS4/Vita RPG

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST

I guess a few years ago "new Chrono Trigger-styled RPG from Square" might've carried a bit more weight. Hell, a few years prior still and "new RPG from Square" would've carried a lot more weight. Maybe it's that the former "Project Setsuna" is now known by Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna and that doesn't quite roll off English tongues.

But look at that 2D character art! And even the 3D shines in places, like with the snow scape above. And they're even calling it "Active Time Battle 2" based on Chrono Trigger with seamless transitions into battle. And you guys liked Bravely Default, right? It can happen. A good new PS4/Vita JRPG from Square Enix.

Read Only Memories is coming soon to PS4 and Vita

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST

Read Only Memories, the cyberpunk adventure inspired by Snatcher, will be making its way to consoles soon on PS4 and PS Vita, as announced today on the PlayStation Blog.

I reviewed Read Only Memories last month when it was released for PC, and I really enjoyed it. Developed by MidBoss, the team best known for organizing the GaymerX convention, Read Only Memories is a point-and-click adventure set in 2064 in a world filled with genetic and cybernetic enhancements, with an emphasis on the inclusion of LGBT characters. And it also has cute robots!

There's no solid release date yet, but I'm glad that more people will get a chance to play this.

Read erotic manga to up your seduction game in Yandere Simulator

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

It's been a bit since we checked in on Yandere Simulator, the Hitman-like stealth game "about stalking a boy and secretly eliminating any girl who seems interested in him, while maintaining the image of an innocent schoolgirl." Last time it was poisoning rivals. Now?

Ah, well you can collect erotic manga to read at night to up your seduction skill, though you have to stay up late to read it, which costs you an hour of school time the next morning. Seduction level four lets you pester male students for favors without giving them something in return or befriending them first, while level five applies all the previous benefits to female students.

Also different panties have different effects.

There's a ton of stuff coming to Rock Band 4 in December, including Rock Band 3

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

Rock Band 4 launched in a state that felt kind of bare bones. Several features were cut from past games in favor of just getting you to simulate playing music in your living room again. A lot of that's getting added after the fact in a "better late than never" December update.

The patch, which goes live on December 8, was just recently detailed on Harmonix's site. Notable features included are: leaderboard and friend challenging, more detailed song results, in-depth statistics covering your entire time playing the game, improved calibration, more items in the Rock Shop, a mode that automatically plays the drum's kick pedal for you, the ability to manually set the breakneck speed (first time ever in a Rock Band title), and a full combo tracker that marks which songs have been FC'd and also provides an in-song indicator to signify if your combo has been broken.

As could be predicted, this update isn't all about new features. It's about squashing bugs too. Harmonix outlines several little fixes it's making so players don't experience any hiccups. Improvements to microphone lag and tambourine sensitivity are two of the more remarkable examples.

Harmonix also says that it has a new gameplay mode that will release on December 8. But, it's not talking about that yet. The developer's also planning monthly updates for the foreseeable future. First thing's first, and that's shipping this monumental patch.

On top of all the reasons listed already that make this update significant, it's also when the tracks from Rock Band 3 will be able to be imported into Rock Band 4. A month ago, Harmonix was going to try to make it happen. Turns out it was successful.

Although it wasn't explicitly mentioned in the post on Harmonix's site, product manager Eric Pope told us today that everything's a go with Rock Band 3. According to him, it'll be available "on or around December 8;" He says that "It can sometimes vary by a couple of days based on first party submission dependencies."

Looking forward, Pope doesn't yet have a time-table for when other Rock Band games might be available to import to Rock Band 4. "Timing is still to be determined on other exports, but we'll post an update as soon as we have one," Pope says. In the meantime, players will have Rock Band 3 songs to placate them and they'll have a whole bunch of new features to add even more depth.

Geoff Keighley says the Game Awards will be shorter this year

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 07:45 AM PST

Last year was Geoff Keighley's first time putting on a video game awards show by himself. Like any initial venture, it wasn't perfect. One of the main complaints was the duration of the event. That's going to change for The Game Awards 2015.

"Honestly, the show felt a little long last year. We went almost three hours," Keighley says in this video about the evolution of The Game Awards. "This year, we're going to try to create a much tighter show. It's going to be about two hours long, and we're going to jam-pack it with tons of great content. It's important that we take what happened last year, try to adapt to the feedback, and build on it this year," he continued.

Apart from cutting down the running time, Keighley's also looking to hit a better balance between awards and reveals. For better or for worse, it seems as if that will be achieved by cutting down on exclusives. "We probably had a few too many world premieres last year," Keighley laments.

The other main component of The Game Awards 2015 will be musical acts. Keighley tweeted that both Chvrches and Deadmau5 will be headlining acts for the show. Deadmau5 is said to be "working on something very special."

It's two weeks on-the-nose until the December 3 show takes place. It always serves as both a nice look back and a glimpse forward. But, if we can do that in an hour less time, well, that's certainly a welcome change.

[Update] Amazon-exclusive Chibi-Robo amiibo on sale in 15 minutes

[Update: Just 15 minutes until little Chibi Robo's up for sale.]

Two hours is enough time to steal and recycle enough copper to buy the latest Nintendo doll going up for purchase, right? The stand-alone version of the Chibi Robo amiibo is going on sale on Amazon for $13 today at 2PM PT.

Note that you won't get the lil guy until it releases on November 30, but if you wanted him that badly you'd have picked up the one packed in with Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, right? There's a limit of two dolls per buyer and Amazon's "one-click" purchasing is enabled. Over on reddit, an Amazonian notes, "though we have ample quantities, we do expect to sell out."

$299.99 PlayStation 4 Uncharted bundle shows up on eBay pre-Black Friday

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

If you don't want to deal with pushing and shoving your way to pick up a $299.99 PlayStation 4 next Friday, eBay is offering them right now via authorized Sony retailer ANTOnline.

We would have totally told you about this deal earlier but in the spreadsheet eBay usually sends us, we saw that the quantity available was only "43" -- while a good deal, it was much too low in volume to make a fuss over since it would be sold out well before we mention the deal.

But if you clicked through, you'll notice that it's well over 970 sold as of writing. Hell, when we started writing this, it was at 850-ish. The damn promotion is now on the homepage of eBay. So much for "43" units available. Maybe they meant 4,300?

In either case, we suspect this will still sell out before the day ends now that it has made its way to the homepage of eBay vs. the deal sections.

Shipping is free and sales tax is in CA/GA. You'll also earn $6 cash-back in eBay bucks, and finally with the authorized Sony retailer status, you'll also be getting the full PS4 warranty for that extra peace of mind (because Sony customer service is always topnotch /s).

Update: eBay has informed us that there are 2,500 units available. At about 1,100 sold, its on pace to sell out by the end of the day.

Game deals from Dealzon. Sales help support Destructoid.

'We're drift compatible': My favorite weird co-op games

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

I’ve been thinking a lot about ogres lately. Specifically, Cho’gall, the recently released two-headed character in Heroes of the Storm. As far as I know, he’s totally unique in the MOBA world as the only hero that requires two players to control him at the same time. One player controls the movement and melee while the other one controls the ranged attacks and the ability to dash. It’s a ridiculous mix. From a strictly competitive standpoint, Cho’gall seems stupid. But he’s just the kind of stupid that I love.

I’ve always had a soft spot not just for co-op gaming, but for co-op games that split the work between the players in interesting ways. Weird games that give the players two different kinds of tasks to accomplish but make them dependent on each other at the same time, often to frustrating and hilarious results, but also occasional moments of brilliance. Those rare special times when you can get in sync with someone enough to really act as one and pull off an accomplishment neither of you could do on your own.

It's an idea I don't think you see enough of in games. There are tons of co-op and team experiences out there, but too few of them really have you and your partners doing something different. Even so, I’ve been lucky enough to play a few of these games over the years and I’d like to share some of my favorites with you.

Persona or SMT Warriors? Atlus says 'get in touch with us anytime'

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

A recent Famitsu poll asked fans what Koei Tecmo Warriors (or Musou) crossover they'd most want to see and Gematsu has the Sokuho@Hokanko translation of the results, as well as responses by those series' respective creators on the idea of such a crossover.

Final Fantasy (#5) producer Yoshinori Kitase offered, "The Forgotten Capital quest could be hot," while Tales of (#6) response was a curt, "Thank you very much, but there aren't any plans."

Rounding out the bottom of the results at #9 and #10, respectively, Shin Megami Tensei producer Kazuyuki Yamai gave the boldest, "Get in touch with us anytime," as Persona PR defaulted back to a more daydreamy, "It’d be interesting if we could make it one day." Not that Persona needs another spin off. Is it weird that Final Fantasy isn't the headline here? It's dropped so much cache recently. Plus Kitase's answer seemed more like a, "ah, sure, that'd be neat" to be nice, but what do I know about reading tone in translated Japanese.

Fans voted on anime crossovers, too, with Pretty Cure, Fairy Tail, Tokyo Ghoul, Kingdom, Gin Tama taking home spots.

That 8-bit Odin Sphere game is definitely happening

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 06:15 AM PST

Recently, Atlus asked fans to tweet out in support of an 8-bit version of Odin Sphere, and it immediately had over 20,000 people respond to the call. It's no surprise then that it took less than a week to hit its 28,888 tweet goal, and the publisher has confirmed that the game is now in development.

As a result of other goals, Twitter icons and mobile wallapapers are coming at some point. Cool! More Odin Sphere isn't a bad thing.

Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator is getting localized next year

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 05:45 AM PST

Guilty Gear Xrd Sign was a damn good fighting game, but the common complaint was that the cast wasn't big enough. That's nothing a premium expansion pack couldn't fix of course!

Aksys Games has announced that Revelator, the follow-up of sorts, will be headed west in "spring" of 2016. It'll still feature 60 FPS, and will again have cross platform play between the PS3 and PS4 consoles. New characters include Johnny, Jack-O, Jam, and Dizzy.

I had a chance to try out the former two in Japan recently at an arcade location test, but left just a week before Jam was added. They both play really well, and I'm looking forward to Revelator. Dizzy was added to the game as a result of a fan poll, and is expected to be added in at some point in the future.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 gets rope tug and buoy hopping

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

It's not just volleyball, clapping titties, and virtual reality you're getting with Dead or Alive Xtreme 3. No, no, no. As shown off in this new video, there's also tug-of-war and pool crossing minigames. The latter would be pretty fucking hard in real life. Which one of you has a pool?

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is coming to PS4 and Vita in Japan on February 25. There's an English version coming to Asia, but no explicit word on a Western release.

Check out every job in Final Fantasy Explorers

Final Fantasy Explorers will arrive in January on the 3DS, but in the meantime, you can take a look at this infographic to plan out your upcoming job choices. As someone who has been maining Paladin in Final Fantasy XIV for some time in my raid groups, I think I'm going to try to go for the tank role if I can find anyone to play with. Other than that, you can't really go wrong with Monk, Dragoon, or Ninja.

They basically got all of the important ones in there. I'm sure some Arithmetician/Calculator fans are going to be pissed, though.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III Easter egg channels...Silent Hill?

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

People are saying Doctor Whom and that's fine, that's fine -- "Angels," innit, governor? -- but it still reads Silent Hill to me because they're like mannequins (by way of I, Robot), even if Super Mario Boos might be closer. Also, the I, Robot director's got his first film since 2009 Nic Cage flick Knowing and it looks terrible.

The point is: shoot off all the robot arms in Call of Duty: Black Ops III's Nuketown in under two minutes and you'll have a swarm of (suddenly re-armed) robots after you when you're not looking, and, yes, they can kill you.

Shooting the heads off, meanwhile, just turns them alive and after you, which is less cool.

Horror fact: things that only move around when you're not paying attention are scary. Especially Furbys and your priorities.

BlazBlue: Central Fiction is looking hot

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

BlazBlue: Central Fiction, which was announced back in July, is still coming along. The game will fully launch in Japanese arcades tomrorow, but not before developer Arc System Works dropped a new character on the fanbase -- Nine.

Design-wise she really brings it, with a flowing animated cape, slick teleportation animations, and plenty of unique tricks like planting seeds in the ground to disrupt enemies. I'll definitely give this a shot if it heads overseas.

I watched a Korean musical about an MMO and so can you

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 04:05 AM PST

As a prelude to the Blade & Soul World Championship, NC Soft put together a Blade & Soul musical. I suppose it wasn't technically about an MMO since it was the Blade & Soul story, but I'm really not sure about anything after the display I saw last week.

The good thing is, wow, you can watch the whole thing, too, for a slightly watered down version of what the hell I experienced live.

For example, the sudden, anachronistic rock music and devils at 10:00.

Or the sudden rock music and dub step at 11:00.

Or the actual devil at 29:50.

Or the cool-ass hats of 45:50.

I swear to God at some point two different Korean female gangster rappers came out in modern attire and rapped and they've cut that bit from the video upload.

Blade & Soul opens $35,000 world championship to the West

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

As announced earlier, Blade & Soul has a firm January 19, 2016 release date for North America and Europe, several years after being promised for release in those territories. Well, NC Soft wants to make it up to you. To start, a chance to win tens of thousands of dollars (and even more Korean won) and make the term "world championship" a little more accurate.

Even if the  ‎₩40,000,000 granted to the winner comes out to something closer to $34,448.

The Korean MMO is actually much more action-based than your typical MMO and NC Soft is heavily supporting the PvP aspect with a large yearly tournament replete with cash prizes.

The televised, two-day World Championship took place November 13-14. There was even a musical. More on that later. And while winner Sinkyum Kim rolled over opponents with his Warlock (only dropping one round), it was a lot fun. Kim won't be back next year, though, as he readies to entry compulsory military service in Korea. China, Taiwan, and Japan were represented along with Korea, though Koreans took the top three spots.

Still, one Japanese player in particular, crowd-favorite Yuya Masumoto, gave last year's champ, Jaesung Lee, a tough run for third. This left head of esports development Yongjun Choi, "was really surprised to see how the Japanese player was really good against Jaesung Lee and also the Koreans players who played against this Japanese player, they were really, really surprised to see the Japanese player played that well."

The 3DS has a few releases as well, including Family Fishing, a game from Arc System Works, and I Love My Pony. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is slated for November 20.

Sad new PC SaGa videos let you relive the old art

Square Enix just dumped a whole sagging load of trailers, most of which impress me with their original artwork and then make me sad when I see the new sprites at the end.

Deadpool is out on PS4 and Xbox One this week

Posted: 19 Nov 2015 03:15 AM PST

That Deadpool game from 2013 was pretty decent. Sure it had its issues, but as High Moon's swan song before they went off to Activision's porting pits, it wasn't bad. Now, the game is being re-released this week on the PS4 and Xbox One platforms for $49.99 -- curiously, the same price as the digital editions for the last generation currently are going for.

If it's anything like the Prototype re-releases, you'll want to do a bit of research before jumping in -- those games weren't really upgraded at all. Right now the game is live on the Xbox marketplace, but the PS4 version is still on the way.
