| 20 hours went into making this animated tower in Fallout 4 Posted: 18 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST In the classiest video to ever feature Phil Collins' music, the aptly named Saucy Sausage shows us the massive tower they've built filled with an animated display the likes of which has never been seen in the wasteland. The epic buildup to the big reveal rivals the finales of V for Vendetta and The Devil's Rejects; a damned near perfect cinematic moment that I'd hate to spoil for you. So sit back, let Phil Collins sooth you, and be amazed. Spoilers: It is a giant ejaculating cock. |
| Odin Sphere has a great collector's edition Posted: 18 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST Atlus sure knows how to put a special edition together. For Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, a remake whose name I dare not type out manually, the publisher has a $79.99 Storybook Edition planned. It's exclusive to PlayStation 4 and includes a 64-page hardcover art book, a t-shirt, a metal slipcase for the game, an art print, and a fancy outer box. For the time being, this bundle is only confirmed for North America. "We don't have any details on an EU release yet, unfortunately," Atlus said in its announcement today. |
| Fallout 4 at its unscripted best Posted: 18 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST Much has been said about Fallout 4's imperfect dialog system, but I haven't seen many people bring up the weird, occasionally hilarious things that can happen to you mid-conversation. This ten-second video is one such example. Perhaps even the perfect example. |
| Darkest Dungeon aims for PS4, Vita this spring Posted: 18 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST Darkest Dungeon is bringing its madness-inducing dungeon crawling to PlayStation 4 and Vita in spring 2016. Those carrion eaters and shamblers are really going to pop on your TV! Speaking of: the PS4 port will be playable at PlayStation Experience next month in San Francisco, if you're going. I am not. Steven and Kyle and Zack are. They better hug and take pictures. As for the Steam version of Darkest Dungeon, that's still coming along in Early Access with a full release planned for January 19, 2016. I dig the general premise and art direction, but I'm holding off in the hope that some of the harsher mechanics will be made less frustrating. | Try before you buy: Rainbow Six Siege has an open beta next week Posted: 18 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST On the fence about Rainbow Six Siege? Next week, a'splode a man-sized hole through that fence and then through the side of the house and then through the floor. Blow your indecision to smithereens. Ubisoft's holding an open beta next week for Rainbow Six Siege, the ill-timed game about terrorism and counter-terrorism. The event starts on November 25 and runs through November 29. It's available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Go ahead and see if it's your cup of tea before plopping cash down for the December 1 launch. |
| Cheap Black Friday games start this Friday on Amazon Posted: 18 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST Not content with one blackened day in the week, Amazon has an entire "Black Friday deals week." In fact, right now, there are deals leading up to the "Black Friday deals week." They got deals on deals on deals on deals. And you know I'm looking at that $175 refurbished Dyson vacuum cleaner, aww hell yeah! But while there are some little baby deals for punk ass shoppers right now (Dishonored: Definitive Edition for 10% off, Borderlands 2 for $5), this Friday's (November 20) deals week is where you'll fine primo pro deals like:
I'm hooting and hollering in anticipation! |
| See Just Cause 3 running on max settings in 4K Posted: 18 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST After the whole usual pre-release kerfuffle and grumbling about Just Cause 3 running at 1080p on PS4 and 900p on Xbox One, here is some dedicated space for PC players to boast about how much extra P they're getting. PC players love guzzling all that sweet, hot P. I almost feel bad for Just Cause 3. The marketing team just tries to show more and more outlandish things and it's like, "duh you can drive a race car between two train." It's weirdly inert, not exactly exciting to see, though it will be incredibly fun to play. In just two more weeks, as it were; it launches December 1. |
| If you're using power armor in Fallout 4, you'll want this torso piece Posted: 18 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST I've been really trying to break the “too good to use” curse in Fallout 4. Now that power armor consumes (semi) rare fusion cores whenever you use it, my natural instinct is to tinker and craft myself the perfect set of apocalypse defying protection -- and promptly leave it hanging in my garage for the day I'll really need it, like the BFG9000 of old. But I'm trying to rise above my baser tendencies and give myself permission to take the suit out on the occasional wasteland romp. With the chest piece I found last night, I think I'll have an easier time than ever justifying that decision. |
| First shots of Valkyria: Azure Revolution and the PS4 remaster Posted: 18 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST I don't know if it was the Valkyria Chronicles Steam release success or Sega just doing its regular couple years of apologizing with good releases before falling into a funk again, but there is a new, anime-as-hell Valkyria Chronicles coming out called Valkyria: Azure Revolution. It was announced yesterday for a winter 2016 release in Japan, but here are the first proper screenshots by way of Famitsu. There's also Valkyria Chronicles PS4 remaster screenshots, but they don't look much different than the PC version I've been playing all year, so it's a bit less exciting. It will come with an Azure Revolution demo, though. I'm a bit torn on the new visual style (at once pretty but a bit overwrought) and there are going to be some major changes to how it plays, but I'll always take a new, good turn-based strategy game. “ヴァルキュリア”の名を冠する新プロジェクト『蒼き革命のヴァルキュリア』がPS4で登場 [Famitsu] |
| The concept for Chrono Trigger came about from a trip to the United States Posted: 18 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST I had played RPGs before it, but Chrono Trigger was probably the first time that I sat down and became immersed in something for days on end. Having borrowed it from a friend I didn't run into the "rental" problem I had with some other RPGs, and I could spend as much time as I wanted taking it in. I enjoyed multiple endings, and swapping the cart back and forth with people led to some awesome new discoveries. We all know Chrono, Frog, and Magus is the best party choice (!), but I loved that every character was viable in their own way. Did You Know Gaming takes on the classic in its newest episode, and it contains a ton of interesting facts, most notably a lot of information regarding the soundtrack. There's also lots of great bits in there with involving famed artist and producer Akira Toriyama.

| Assassin's Creed Syndicate releases on PC tomorrow, but will it work? Posted: 18 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST Assassin's Creed Syndicate is one of the best Assassin's Creed games in recent memory. But, only two-thirds of the prospective audience has gotten a chance to see it. While PS4 and Xbox One owners have had the chance to spend three weeks in digital London, PC players have to wait until tomorrow. Given the problematic launch of Assassin's Creed Unity, it's worth beating the drum: Will Syndicate on PC work? Ubisoft carved out three weeks to refine this version so that it shines as brightly as possible. The developer knows that it has to win back the trust of PC players. It can't afford for this to go off the rails. Despite the fact that it releases tomorrow, there aren't yet any impressions from major publications. Sources say that the game just unlocked a bit earlier today, so most likely haven't had time to play and then write something. However, a thread has popped up on reddit detailing one user's issues thus far. It seems as if some Nvidia GameWorks features, like PCSS shadows and HBAO+ Ultra, are causing dips in performance upward of a loss of 20 frames per second. Other than that, some bugs are being reported, but that "It's pretty good when it's not breaking." Because this is just one person's experience, it's hard to say if it's completely representative of the final product. Bugs are going to happen in a game of this magnitude, but the frequency with which they happen is what determines if they're acceptable or not. This looks to be better than Unity, but that was practically a given. Do yourself a favor and wait until more reports are out about the status of this version. We said that Ubisoft has to win back the trust of PC players. That means that it definitely doesn't get the benefit of the doubt yet. AC Syndicate PC Port Report [reddit] |
| Rocket League December DLC adds first non-standard arena Posted: 18 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST We knew a new Rocket League announcement was coming today. It's not any more word on if/when the car soccer game would show up on other platforms. Instead, it's a handful of new car customization options modeled after brutal post-apocalyptic wastelands like the one seen in Mad Max. Chaos Run will be paid DLC, bringing two new battle-cars (Ripper and Grog), six new decals for each, as well as some new paint types, wheels, toppers, and antennas. It's no DeLorean, but it looks cool. More interesting is the new arena "Wasteland." Not only does it go along with the theme, featuring cracked desert sands and graffiti'd billboards, it is also the first Rocket League field to break the mold, featuring a sloped perimeter, a wider pitch, and different boost locations. It isn't as crazy as some of the arenas in Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, but it should definitely change up how the game is played in subtle ways. Wasteland will be available for free for all players. |
| Halo 5 now has Big Team Battle Posted: 18 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST With today's 6.2GB "Battle of Shadow and Light" update for Halo 5: Guardians, Big Team Battle is in. My old favorite! The eight vs. eight multiplayer playlist supports Capture the Flag, Strongholds, and Slayer, and it's playable on four new maps: Basin, Deadlock, Guillotine, and Recurve. Besides those additions and some tweaks to existing content, 343 is rolling out a bunch of new REQs. Not all of these items will be immediately available, but everything should be in the game within 24 hours. |
| Crytek's VR adventure Back to Dinosaur Island free on Steam Posted: 18 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST Is it possible to go "back" to Dinosaur Island without ever having been there in the first place? Apparently it is, because Crytek just released a short virtual reality demo on Steam called Back to Dinosaur Island. From the reviews already up on Steam (most of which show 0.1 hours logged), it sounds like it's basically a short cutscene made to show off Cryengine and how it plays with VR. Note this is not the same thing as Robinson: The Journey, which is also a Crytek-developed VR game featuring dinosaurs. Presumably, that will have more game to it, in addition to the pretty foliage and scary Tyrannosaurus rendered in stereoscopic 3D. |
| Eidos is holding Deus Ex: Mankind Divided back until August Posted: 18 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST Eidos Montreal has pushed the release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided to August 23, 2016. A fairly substantial delay, considering the game was previously slated for February (and, heh, remember that canned pre-order program that would have let people play four days early?). "We're confident and proud of the game so far," said studio head David Anfossi. "However, as we are now playing through the game in full we can see that it will require more time in post-production for tuning, iterations, and refinement to meet our high standards." You do you, Deus Ex. No compromise on quality - new release date for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided [Deus Ex] |
| Posted: 18 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST I'm really surprised that Super Star Wars is getting a re-release in 2015. No, not because "it's old," but rather the fact that it's an exceedingly unforgiving retro game, which doesn't really gel with the hand-holding landscape of modern gaming. While some elements haven't aged all that well, it's still very much a classic. |
| The dialogue in Fallout 4 is so much better as farts Posted: 18 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST Some evil genius decided to completely redo all the voice dialogue in Fallout 4, only instead of words he uses fart sounds. Bethesda spent years writing and recording this dialogue, while this person made it better in just over a week. *fart sounds* "How did a girl like me ever get so lucky?" If you'd like to experience the raunchy new dialogue yourself you can grab the mod for PC here, I wouldn't hold your breath on this one being ported to consoles. |
| Posted: 18 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST After twenty or so hours in the blistering sun (my cold, unkempt room) with my hands on the well-used revolver (bargain basement keyboard and mouse), I'm walking away from Hard West in turmoil. A tactical turn-based western game that dabbles in demonology is exactly the sort of thing that turns my head. Plus, that XCOM 2 itch needs a-scratchin'. It's too bad the damn thing is more broken than a cowboy's nose after a pistol-whipping. |
| The Wii U turns three years old today in the US Posted: 18 Nov 2015 02:45 AM PST Ok, I couldn't resist that "dust" joke. But really, my Wii U has gotten a lot of play over the past three years. Today marks the third anniversary of the US launch, which took place on November 18, 2012. Since then it's really struggled to gain traction, while its younger brother the 3DS continues to soar. It's a shame as the system is pretty damn great, and the Wii U GamePad is one of my favorite controllers of all time. Whereas so many Wii games took to forcing in waggle controls just because developers could, the GamePad has been a rather innovative and consistent force throughout the Wii U's lifetime. Sure, the Wii had a lot of great games that depended on it, but I loved how Nintendo went back to its roots with tactile controls, even if it ended up paying for it. Or maybe that was partially because of the terrible, confusing name. Maybe we'll never know. Either way, I'll continue to have fond memories of the ill-fated system for the rest of my gaming career. Nice work, Nintendo. Sorta. |
| What's your most beloved 'alternative' sports game? Posted: 18 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST Before big publishers sought to buy up every license known to man, there was an influx of amazing alternative sports games. Mario has somewhat kept that torch alive with arcade-like influences over the framework of real sports, but there are decidedly less NFL Blitz's and NBA Jam's in the world. These games don't get enough credit: without them, I probably wouldn't have learned the basics of many sports, which is knowledge that is still relevant to this day. My personal favorite? Super Baseball 2020. It had pretty much everything you'd want -- outfielders with jetpacks, customizable robot batters, and tons of flair. It was like a jacked up Bad News Baseball, and I loved it. There are a bunch of other standouts too for me, including Mutant League Football, and the fairly unknown Ballblazer Champions (basically a more involved Rocket League) -- I haven't met anyone else who has even heard of the latter. With the upcoming launch of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, take a minute to share your favorite alternative sports games. |
| Guitar Hero Live adds another live rock concert this week Posted: 18 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST One of the coolest things about Guitar Hero Live's GHTV element is that Activision, in the near future at least, is keen on supporting it with constant new content. That includes 70 new songs by the end of the year, and updated live concerts to play. They already debuted with an Avenged Sevenfold concert, and now, they're looking to Rival Sons, who is currently ready to support Black Sabbath's world tour in 2016. Weezer and Grizfolk concerts are said to arrive before the end of the year. I feel like at some point, Activision may just make the GHTV app available for everyone to download for free, provided that you have a guitar controller. |
| Review: Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Posted: 18 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST Once upon a time, Mario Tennis was a national pastime at pretty much every household I visited. Back in the year 2000 there weren't a whole lot of alternative sports games outside of a few gems (I miss EA Sports Big), and the original Nintendo 64 game was pure magic. It even inspired me to play actual tennis for a full year in a league after taking lessons! As the first follow-up to a console iteration since 2004 however, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash feels like it could have used more development time. |
| Next month's Rayman looks great, I'll probably never play it Posted: 18 Nov 2015 12:30 AM PST People have said nothing but good things about Rayman Jungle Run and the third mobile Rayman game using the same assets (after Fiesta Run), Rayman Adventures, looks great. And while Jungle Run was limited as an endless runner (though, again, still pretty beloved), this one has full movement and exploratory platforming. But it's on phones and the like -- coming out December 3, just announced -- so I'll probably skip it. I don't know why Rayman has been consigned to mobile; I suppose Rayman Legends didn't perform well enough, though Ubisoft kind of chopped its legs off with the whole Wii U exclusive/not-exclusive debacle around that release (I still hate the mosquito on non-Wii U consoles). Oh well. We had Origins, we had Legends -- great 2D platformers aren't too common these days. I'd still like to see Nintendo have another crack, but the company seems content with 3D or 3D on a 2D plane. Something of a sad 20 year anniversary for Rayman, but the game might well be great and it's just me having a sad for not wanting to keep up with the times and game on my mobile. Though Apple TV owners can play the thing right now. Else-wise, December 3 for Android, iPad, and iPhone. |
| Smash isn't the only fighting game Cloud is hitting this year Posted: 18 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST More Dissidia arcade trailers are out in the wild, and this one deals with the divisive Cloud Strife. While a lot of people who have never played a Final Fantasy game are quick to dismiss him, I feel like I have to make the case for Cloud as a fighting game character. He's easily one of the most unique fighters in the series from a moveset perspective, drawing from a large pool of magic and limit breaks to go along with his unconventional Buster Sword style. It makes sense then that the developers of Super Smash Bros. would have no problem designing an enticing looking combatant, and Square Enix and Koei Tecmo have seemingly done the exact same thing for the third iteration of Dissidia, set to hit arcades this month. Cloud is still very much relevant, folks. |
| Who is your favorite Fallout 4 companion? Posted: 17 Nov 2015 11:15 PM PST Fallout 4 has been out for long enough, so the time has come to start discussing the finer points of the game. I hope you've consulted Jordan's companions guide, and have located all 13 characters to accompany on your travel. Obviously, if you don't want the names of the companions spoiled or you don't want to see discussions regarding them, don't scroll down below. I'm going to kick things off with my personal favorite -- Nick Valentine. Sure he's a bit of a softie, and far too nice to the player right off the bat, but he's also a badass. I really dig the fact that he's a synth that was thrown out as a "defect," with a chip on his shoulder. Also, he's fairly useful from a pragmatic standpoint, and I love how he tracks or otherwise tries to explain the Mysterious VATS Stranger. |
| Fallout 4 mod lets you see full sentence dialogue prompts Posted: 17 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST Fallout 4's streamlined dialogue options have been a divisive subject among players. Some love the more minimal interface, while others like myself wish we had a clearer idea of what exactly we were about to say. Thankfully, as is normal for Bethesda RPGs, there's a mod to suit every taste. This particular mod, Full Dialogue Interface, is an English language mod based on a Russian mod for customizing dialogue that would appear in the game. It allows you to see in advance of a dialogue choice the full sentence that you'll say, rather than a short indicator of tone.
The Full Dialogue Interface mod for Fallout 4 is available on NexusMods, alongside installation instructions. |
| New update will 'visually improve' Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection Posted: 17 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST A second patch for Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is bringing "various visual improvements." What, exactly, is being visually improved isn't detailed, but the patch will also bring "adjusted trophy requirements, adjusted forward movement sensitivity, improvements to package installation, stability improvements and updated credits." For some reason. The 1.04GB patch is rolling out now. If you've updated, let us know what you think of those "various visual improvements!" |

| The Hatoful Boyfriend plushie Kickstarter passed $95,000 Posted: 17 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST Everyone has a favourite Hatoful Boyfriend pigeon, and anyone who says they don’t is a god damn liar. It is impossible to have gotten to 2015 without falling for the charm and class of Sakuya, or the zany life-loving Okosan (who is also objectively superior to all others), so just stop denying your avian passion. Allow yourself to fall into their feathery embrace as your lips/beaks/whatevers finally meet, nestled in their plumage until the sun rises once again. That, or just get the official plushies that are currently being Kickstarted. There’s currently 19 days left, but the campaign has managed to unlock the last of its stretch goals, meaning every potential pigeon lover will be available in a frankly disgustingly cute cuddly form. The pledge tiers to actually get the plushies are kind of confusing, and, unfortunately, a lot of the early stock has already gone. In theory, $25 will nab you one of the original campaign birds (Shuu, Ryouta or Okosan), while $1000 will get you the entire set, plus a whole load of extras including art by the original Hatoful Boyfriend artist, a giant Shuu plush and more. For those not wanting to faff around with Kickstarter there’s some bad news: there is currently no confirmation that these plushies will be available elsewhere once the campaign ends. Chances are they will seeing as how popular this campaign is, but if you want to get one you might want to act fast. So get in fast if you want some cuddly pigeons for your house. |
| Come watch someone's dad do Street Fighter II's victory poses Posted: 17 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST Street Fighter’s victory poses have always been kind of daft to me. Instead combing their hair, doing backflips, or laughing at nothing, chances are as soon as a real fight was over people would just limp away mumbling various swear words. I know real fighters also don’t tend to shoot energy balls out of their hands, but let’s just ignore that for now. Yet somehow when Nick Luciano’s elderly father does the same poses, the results were endearing as hell. He’s not exactly doing Vega-style backflips, but he can pull off a mean Dhalsim dance, and as far as I'm concerned that's all that matters. Now I want to see how he’d do Rufus’ victory pose.
