Blizzard is bringing more people into the Overwatch beta Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST If you've been meaning to register for the Overwatch beta and haven't yet, get on that! Blizzard is holding its first weekend beta event for the team-based shooter from Friday, November 20 at 9:00am Pacific to Monday, November 23 at 9:00am Pacific. Three whole days of stress testing. With this and future weekend events, "a lot more players" in North America and Europe will be brought into the beta. (And folks who have closed beta access are invited, too.) The whole 21-hero roster will be playable on three maps: Hanamura, King's Row, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar. "To help us get the most out of this testing phase, we will be flagging accounts for the Beta Test Weekend a little early, during a scheduled maintenance on Thursday, November 19. We encourage all new recruits to use this additional time to download and install the beta client so you can be ready for action once servers come back online." Despite being hooked on Heroes of the Storm, Legacy of the Void, and Battlefront, I want in on this. I'll clear my schedule! Overwatch Beta Test Weekend November 20-23 [Battle.net]
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final gets original SMT IV cast Posted: 17 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST Atlus is embracing confusing naming conventions with the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final, which Atlus has billed as not a direct sequel to SMTIV (you don't have to have played it to play Final) when we last wrote about it. "Set in a dystopian Tokyo in the year 203X, the Nintendo 3DS exclusive follows the exploits of a silent protagonist who, after dying in battle, returns to the land of living after forming an alliance with Dagda, a demonic god, who together set out on a mission to kill a group of other deities." Despite this, the SMT IV cast (Flynn, Jonathan, Walter, Isabeau) will make an appearance in SMTIV: Final. Isabeau will even join the new protagonist's party. Also, if you have original SMT IV save data, "you'll obtain items and equipment that will be useful on your adventure in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final." It releases in Japan on February 10.
Huh, Zombi is headed to retail in Europe Posted: 17 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST Ubisoft is bringing Zombi to retail in Europe on January 21, 2016. The horror game debuted on Wii U years ago as ZombiU, and only recently dropped the "U" for a digital-only release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Strange timing all around. And now I have to wonder: if there's enough interest for a run at retail, does that mean there's enough interest for a sequel? That would be surprising. I brought this news up in our office chat client today only to learn that a few of us were secretly sitting on the story. Apparently, Brett had been "looking at that all day with no real desire to write it," while Steven (who was busy writing about a mod to weaponize your infant son in Fallout 4) had the Zombi announcement open in a tab, ready for when he ran out of other things. The hive mind grows stronger by the day.
Go download the first episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2 for free Posted: 17 Nov 2015 11:30 AM PST Let's have a Big Fantastic Tuesday Giveaway Extravaganza. The prize is the first episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2. The winner is you! Well, not you, PC player; you are a loser in this isolated situation. Microsoft and Sony are giving away the first episode of the four-chapter story of Resident Evil Revelations 2. Just go ahead and download it. Obviously, the ploy at hand is to give you the initial taste for free in hopes that you're so hooked you can't help but come back for more. If you're going whole hog into this, Xbox has the deluxe edition marked down to $22.49 from $29.99 for Gold subscribers. The main draw to this version is that it comes with two extra episodes. However, buying the episodes piecemeal for $6 each is the only way you'll see any actual saving from this free offer. Resident Evil Revelations 2: Penal Colony [PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace]
Turn your baby into a bomb in Fallout 4 Posted: 17 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST As someone who just wants his kids back, I associate with the plight of Fallout 4's player character. As someone who doesn't want to work too hard at it, I admire the ingenuity of Fallout 4 modder Trainwiz and their Atom Bomb Baby mod. You'll get your baby back -- and then some. Because an endless supply of your baby will fire from a mininuke launcher and explode all over the place, not unlike a real baby, but with fire instead of poop.
X comes after Z as far as new Puzzle & Dragons is concerned Posted: 17 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST Puzzle & Dragons X is confirmed for a 2016 3DS release in Japan. The money-printing series' (50 million downloads as of a couple months ago) next dedicated console entry is a follow up to Puzzle & Dragons Z, which was sold outside of Asia bundled with Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. Though "X" is a few letters before "Z," Puzzle & Dragons X will continue the RPG-like additions (towns and NPCs) the previous 3DS offshoot had over the mobile version, according to Siliconera translation of Hachima reporting on the announcement in Famitsu. In fact, it looks like a lot of Puzzle & Dragons Z content is just being remixed, with additional content, over 500 monsters, and extra RPG elements. 【先出し週刊ファミ通】『パズドラ』新作ほか、ガンホー・オンライン・エンターテイメント作品を大特集![Famitsu]
Check out all of Mega Man 1, recreated in Mario Maker! Posted: 17 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST [As someone who joined Dtoid in what I call the silver age, I know of past alumni of Dtoid but nothing specific. Decommissioned fighting robot Tony Ponce swings by show us his extremely ambitious remake of Mega Man 1 through Super Mario Maker, now with checkpoints! And this thing's ambitious with a capital BAMB. Got other cool stuff to share? Share with us in through a community blog! ~ Strider] You're probably wondering what ol' Tony Ponce has been up to these past few months. A lot of things, actually, but I'll save some of those stories for another time. Today, I want to talk to you about a little project I've been cooking up during my free hours.
We need to dirty that Pip-Boy up a little bit Posted: 17 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST Anyone who got their hands on the wrist-encapsulating replica Pip-Boy with their copy of Fallout 4 might feel a dissonance between the dirty, grimy in-game world and the shiny coat of paint on the device. For a place where nothing is brand new anymore, the Pip-Boy looks awfully pristine. Bill Doran, a video game prop modder, took it up himself to give that thing the rusted, half-broken appearance it deserves. Through some meticulous painting, stenciling, and dismantling, he ended up with a Pip-Boy that looks a lot something you might find lying beside a dead body. If you want the outcome of this video but don't possess the know-how, here's a little hack for you: Fill a bucket with water. Find a dirt pile. Throw water on dirt pile. You've made mud. Throw Pip-Boy in mud. Grab your skateboard. Do an ollie over the mud. Boom. You now have a dirty Pip-Boy.
Fallout 4 has the smallest Alien Easter egg Posted: 17 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST First, let me clear something up that also confused the shit out of me. Prometheus 2 is no longer called Alien: Paradise Lost, but instead Alien: Covenant and is coming in 2017 (as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy). Meanwhile, Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has had his Alien movie (Alien 5, basically) put on hold until Ridley Scott's sequel to his prequel. Meanwhile, watching Jodorowsky's Dune recently has me sad for the science fiction that could have been. Instead, simultaneous prequels and sequels to a movie (Alien) that really didn't need one, let alone six. Ah well. Anyways, here's a tiny-ass Easter egg spotted by Imgur's 1Times. A particular Flux Sensor in Fallout 4 has "CM-88B 180924609" etched into the back. Incredible sleuths with heightened Google abilities will know that as the registration number of the ship Nostromo from Alien. If you, too, wish to collect this etched item, the directions to it are here.
Raiden joins Metal Gear Solid V as the Skulls come home to roost Posted: 17 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST The Gray Fox outfit in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is pretty dope, though it's a challenge to get me out of my sexy Black Ocelot. But maybe for FOB missions, wherein I will sacrifice style for results. A recent Famitsu live stream showcases the latest additions to the mode, including the new gun camera emplacement, Raiden suit, Wormhole weapon, and even a Skulls sighting on base. It still weirds me out that some of the later enemies in Rise of the Tomb Raider end up looking like the Parasite Unit because of their white hats.
Fear and loathing in Halo 5: Guardians Posted: 17 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST "Fuck this stupid fucking Call of Duty bullshit. Get your shit together, Bungie...er...343, whoever!" This is how my first night with Halo 5 ends, in a fit of rage after a kill-less losing streak in the game's new tepidly received Breakout mode. Breakout is a small arena-based four vs. four game type where spartans have no shield and one life. Capturing a flag or eliminating the opposing team nets you a win. Win five rounds and you win the entire match.
Heroes of the Storm's Cho'gall is freaking weird, but feels balanced Posted: 17 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST Earlier this month, Blizzard announced a two-player hero in the form of Cho'gall for Heroes of the Storm. In essence, the primary player would control movement and their own set of abilities with Cho, and another would take care of Gall, who is attached to the former -- almost like a permanent Abathur hat. It makes for an interesting playstyle, but of course, it has its drawbacks.
Hotline Miami 2 level editor beta hitting next month Posted: 17 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST It's been a little while since we last heard about the “almost ready” level editor for Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. But good things come to masked murderers who lie in wait and our patience has finally been rewarded. Developer Dennaton has announced that the level editor beta will hit the Steam version (and only the Steam version) on December 10. According to the announcement, the level editor will be open to everyone (no need for an invite) and all the content will be available from the start. Sadly, there are a few limitations. The level editor will never see the light of day on the console versions (although they are planning on releasing map packs to those platforms), there won't be any custom music options given the obvious copyright problems that would expose Dennaton to, and there won't be a custom sprite editor included (although there are third-party options available). The level editor may be coming out a little later than initially expected, but it's still good to see a developer supporting their game with free additions like this. Looking forward to all the fun and frustrating rampages the Hotline community will cook up with these tools.
| Cobra and Shadowloo join forces in new Street Fighter X G.I Joe comic Posted: 17 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST Comic book publisher IDW released its first solicitation blurb for its upcoming Street Fighter X G.I Joe comic and it's exactly as campy and dumb as previous collaborations between the two franchises have been. Destro and Bison join forces to hatch a fiendish plot to rid themselves of their respective archenemies by *shocking music cue* pitting the Joes and the world warriors against each other in a free-for-all tournament... Somehow.
This set-up sounds as cliché as it gets, but I can't help but crack a smile at the idea. I can remember lying on the floor and running over Cobra commander with Guile's "Sonic Boom tank" on a distant Christmas morning. It doesn't hurt that the alternate covers for the issue are spot on. The low-res version of Gung Ho and the Vega/Snake Eyes fight are pretty much perfect. The series will start next February if you feel like keeping an eye out for a nostalgic guilty pleasure. | There's a $329 PS4 Star Wars Battlefront bundle on eBay Posted: 17 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST It's Tuesday and it's another big release day. If you've digested all the Star Wars Battlefront reviews (e.g. this one here) and you still want in on the action, particularly on the PS4, then here's a worthwhile pre-Black Friday deal for you to gander at. |
Everything we know about Cloud in Smash Bros. from both a Final Fantasy and Smash perspective Posted: 17 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST In the wake of last week's reveal of Final Fantasy's Cloud coming to Super Smash Bros., some people have managed to put together videos analyzing his introduction in great detail. We have two great examples for you. The first, by GameXplain, is long and gives a frame-by-frame breakdown of Cloud's moveset along with any nods that Sakurai gives to Final Fantasy. A more digestible one by Master0fHyrule is three minutes and just features all of Cloud's moves in real-time and slow-motion. Of course, all of this is based solely on the initial reveal. Nintendo likely has more to add. Look for that next month at the Direct that will be dedicated entirely to Smash Bros. Until then, pore over these videos so you know exactly how to use or defend against that big ol'd Buster Sword.
A new Valkyria Chronicles and a remaster are coming to PS4 Posted: 17 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST As it turns out, Sega's recent Valkyria trademark was worth getting excited over after all. The company has a new game in the series and a remaster of the original Valkyria Chronicles in development for PlayStation 4, according to Famitsu. Western release for both? Let's hope! Valkyria Chronicles Remaster launches in Japan on February 10, 2016. This version will sport graphical updates, DLC pack-ins, and Trophies, as well as a demo for the new game, Valkyria: Azure Revolution, which releases in winter 2016. Director Takeshi Ozawa describes Azure Revolution as "largely different on the surface but in a good way." Battles are real-time and "action-ish," with players "setting commands to buttons," reports Gematsu. "The concept of the battle system and the sensation of the battlefield are the same, but because it's an RPG with simulation elements, you can experience the battlefield through a different perspective," Ozawa told Famitsu. "You get the feeling that you're taking territory from a major power and expanding your scope. You'll prepare at the base, go out to the field, achieve your objectives, and return to base. It's similar to an RPG where you go into dungeons." Intriguing stuff! And if you're wondering about the visual style, wonder no more.
Xbox's Black Friday actually kicks off this Friday with a 150+ game sale Posted: 17 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST The Black Friday Creep is upon us once again. Every year, retailers try to move the goalposts for when the year's biggest shopping day begins. Xbox, bold as ever, has decided it's bumping the event up an entire week. We have this new video from Xbox that promotes its Black Friday happenings. More than 150 games will be on sale at discounts from 40 to 60 percent. Titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and Batman: Arkham Knight (the version that works!) are heavily featured. A full list of games is likely coming in the very near future. Black Friday falls on November 27 this year. But, Xbox Live Gold subscribers get access to the sale on November 20. Silver members have to wait until November 24. It's unclear whether Silver accounts get the same discounts as Gold. Regardless, everyone gets the life discount of not getting trampled by a cavalcade of soccer moms looking to save two dollars on laundry detergent.
Amazon is listing Pokemon Generation 1 on 3DS at $9.99 each Posted: 17 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST Well, I guess this would make sense, but it's probably not ideal for a lot of you who were expecting to scoop up the upcoming releases of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow all at once. Up at Amazon, there's a $9.99 pre-order price live for all three games. It could just be a placeholder (we reached out to check), but it would also make perfect sense why Nintendo would charge a premium for this, especially if the link capabilities work with the new hardware. They're still expected to launch on February 27, 2016 in digital form. Pokemon Red Version [Amazon]
Review: Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series: The Ice Dragon Posted: 17 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST In my review for The Lost Lords, the second episode of Game of Thrones, I lamented that I was making all the wrong decisions and that my version of House Forrester was doomed. With The Ice Dragon wrapping up the series, my prophecy has basically come to pass. I knew it from the beginning: I'm not cut out for Westeros. Cersei Lannister once famously told Eddard Stark, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die." In that case, I certainly didn't win.
| [Update] More publishers claim Green Man Gaming is selling its games unauthorised Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:43 AM PST [Update]: We have received this statement from Green Man Gaming's head of PR:
It's worth noting that Green Man Gaming doesn't say where its sources are, and "a range of outlets" could mean literally anything, so don't take this as proof that it is 'safe' to buy from for Ubisoft or Activision games. However, it also referenced a statement they made to PCGamesN which suggests it will be working towards becoming more transparent in the future:
Back when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was coming out, we reported that popular game retailer Green Man Gaming may not have been acquiring its keys for the game legitimately. CD Projekt Red stated that the site was not an authorised reseller, and as such the keys they sold were not guaranteed to work. This issue caused major controversy on the incredibly useful subreddit /r/GameDeals, which collates all the different discounts on games running at the moment. The subreddit has a rule against unauthorised key resellers, which at that time is what Green Man Gaming was seen to be. It was decided that as the site had such a good track record before then, it would not be banned unless further publishers claimed it wasn’t authorised. Well, now Activision and Ubisoft have contacted the subreddit to say that Green Man Gaming is not an authorised seller of their games. Considering right now Black Ops 3 and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate are currently being heavily promoted through the site, that’s a bit of a problem. The problem with buying games from unauthorised resellers is pretty simple: you don’t know what you’re getting, and you don’t know how the seller got it either. For example, keys given out by Green Man Gaming for Black Ops 3 inconsistently gave the NukeTown DLC to some but not to others. Sometimes they were “Rest of World” keys, meaning there is the chance they were bought from regions where the game is much, much cheaper. And for some, the key was just flat-out invalid. There is no guarantee your game will work, and if it doesn’t, you’re very limited in what you can do about it. Following this discovery, Green Man Gaming has been banned from the subreddit. Interestingly, Green Man Gaming claims to be unable to show any evidence proving it is an authorised seller. As a result, it is also withdrawing from the subreddit and doesn't seem to be contesting the ban. It is worth noting that while Green Man Gaming is not authorised to sell Activision or Ubisoft games, it is authorised to sell EA, Bethesda, WB Games, Devolver Digital and ArenaNet games. We have contacted Green Man Gaming about this issue and will update this article should we hear back from them. For now though, be very careful about what games you purchase from the site. As you know, we have official and direct relationships with a range of publishers, developers and distributors. Some publishers send us keys directly. Some publishers use distributors to send out their keys, and so we work with the distributor to get keys. Where we don't have a direct relationship, we have always taken care to responsibly source keys from range of outlets. Most retailers and businesses operate in this way as it's not always possible to obtain product from the source. Earlier on, we spoke to PC Games N and said "Going forward, we are going to make this clearer on our site for every product, so a customer knows exactly where the key is coming from - work has started on this already." I will drop you a line when this is live on the site. |
Fan favorite Terra takes a step up to the Dissidia Final Fantasy arcade plate Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST Terra is often a fan favorite Final Fantasy character -- heck, anyone from VI is usually a top choice. What makes her especially badass in Dissidia is that she can Trance mid-fight, turning her into her Esper form. She's also a great zoner, with her power to utilize tons of different ranged magic attacks. As a side note, I totally forgot she was called "Tina" in the original Japanese version.
Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST Gauntlet as an eight-person competitive arena game? Sure, I'm in. That more-or-less accurate summary is about all it took for me to give Knight Squad a look. Hearing a few co-workers sing the game's praises at conventions also helped convince me. I don't have an extra Xbox One controller for Knight Squad, much less seven, but that's okay. Unlike a lot of recent multiplayer games, you can compete online as well as locally.
Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna, Tokyo RPG Factory's latest, launches in early 2016 Posted: 17 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST Earlier this year at E3, we got a glimpse at "Project Setsuna," and damn was it beautiful. Now the game is known as Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna, and already has a release date in Japan -- February 18. It'll launch on both PS4 and Vita, and gameplay is said to be very close to Square's own Chrono series. For those of you who are curious, it has been confirmed that it will get a localization sometime in 2016.
Funcom's The Park is coming to consoles next year Posted: 17 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST Late last month, Funcom released The Park, which was said to be an experimental adventure game set in the same universe as The Secret World. It was an alright little romp, especially at a discount if you can swing next. Early next year it appears as if it's coming to both PS4 and Xbox One, after what Funcom calls a "successful" PC launch -- though, that metric seems to be partially based on YouTube views, and sales have not been shared.
Controller remapping is now available on all Xbox One controllers Posted: 16 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST Good news for everyone who owns an Xbox One but didn't shell out for one of those ultra fancy premium Elite controllers, you can now remap the buttons on your standard Xbox One controllers too. Previously limited just to Elite controllers, you can now go in and swap around what all your buttons do in all your Xbox One games. Want to swap your A button and right trigger for some reason? Done, totally sorted. This functionality now works for standard official wireless controllers, as well as third party wired controllers. Syncing customised layouts to the cloud and creating controller presets are still exclusive to the Elite controller, and none of this functionality works at all on PC yet. You can change your layouts by going to Settings, Ease of Use then Button Mapping. So, who's excited to have this functionality widely available on their Xbox One?
Is this our first glimpse at the name of the Mass Effect: Andromeda protagonist? Posted: 16 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST The internet is full of really eagle-eyed geeks, the kind of people willing to freeze frame trailers that seemingly show off absolutely nothing and find nuggets of new information in them. Sometimes they are right on the money, other times they read way too much into nothing. It's always tough in advance to tell which is which. Earlier this week reddit user Benelioto spotted something in that recent Mass Effect: Andromeda N7 day teaser trailer that might tell us the name of the protagonist of Mass Effect: Andromeda. I'll help you out, it's around 44 seconds in. Still miss it? I can't blame you, it's a tough catch to make. Try looking out for a set of dog tags. According to eagle eyed Benelioto, the dog tags appear to say either Rider or Ryder, which they hypothesize is the name of Andromeda's main character.
Norman Reedus says Silent Hills still 'needs to happen' Posted: 16 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST If you're still salty over the cancellation of Silent Hills, you are not alone. Norman Reedus - who's likeness was used in the (terrifying) Silent Hills interactive teaser P.T. -- is still "super bummed" about the whole thing, but recently told IGN he "[has] faith" that he, producer Hideo Kojima and horror legend Guillermo del Toro "can do something else".
EA is working on its own 'Assassin's Creed-style' game Posted: 16 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST EA has confirmed that it is working on a new Assassin's Creed-type action game. At the UBS Global Technology Conference yesterday, CFO Blake Jorgensen said that Jade Raymond - an Ubisoft veteran who joined EA in July to found new Montreal studio, Motive - would be leading on the "gigantic action" game.
