Review: Star Wars Battlefront

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST

Star Wars has been a part of my reality ever since my parents showed me the first film on VHS. From there I attended the release of every movie in the series, including the re-releases of the original trilogy -- if you're wondering, I'm an Empire man.

I'm glad that I had such an affinity towards Star Wars at such a young age, because I instantly gravitated towards the games, which for the most part, were pretty spectacular (shoutout to Jedi Knight). But not all of them are created equal. Star Wars Battlefront falters a bit, hiding behind high production values while the actual shooting bits suffer.

Well, that's one way to enter a locked building in Fallout 4

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

In this first Fallout 4 episode of the YouTube show Mythbusters, we're shown a trick to enter locked buildings. Turns out you can just peek through a window and sit on furniture to warp inside. There can't be very many locations where that would work, but it's amusing all the same.

And speaking of amusing, try holding up an item the next time you chat with someone.

Forza 6 adds microtransactions two months after launch

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

One of the biggest criticisms of Forza Motorsport 5 was the career progression system and its over-reliance on microtransactions to advance at a reasonable rate. It was such a deal-breaker for some that Turn 10 reversed its ways and didn't include them at all in Forza 6. The developer said that the only way they'd be added is if "players asked for them."

Well, that apparently happened, as Forza Motorsport 6 has introduced a "Token" system over the weekend. Tokens can be bought for as little as 100 for $.99 or as much as 20,000 for $99.99. In a post on Forza's site, it's said that this currency can be used to buy cars and mod packs.

It's hard to imagine a scenario where players asked for microtransactions to be added into the mix. It's much more plausible that Turn 10 waited to avoid taking heat from reviewers. Whatever the case, players who don't want to see it don't have to; the menus have an option to keep Tokens from appearing on the heads-up display.

Introducing microtransactions two months after launch is an unusual tactic. We reached out to Turn 10 to see if the developer will offer some insight as to why it waited so long, if and how players actually asked for this, and if this will affect the progression pace of Forza 6's career. This is the verbatim response we received:

"Forza Motorsport 6 was designed, tuned and play-tested from the ground up without Tokens. Now that we’ve confirmed that the game economy is balanced and fun for our players out in the wild, we are offering them as a matter of player choice. Some players appreciate using Tokens as a way of gaining immediate access to content that may take many hours to acquire in the normal course of play. There is also an option within the in-game menu to turn off Tokens entirely. We are dedicated to creating open-ended, evolving experiences that are built with and for our fans."

A PR representative attributes this quote to "a Microsoft spokesperson." It's highly unlikely that anyone from Turn 10 offered their sentiment. Also, the quote largely ducks answering any of the questions asked, specifically whether fans actually asked for the inclusion of microtransactions and why a two-month wait took place. However, it was noted separately that nothing in terms of career progression has changed.

That's more like it, Star Fox Zero

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

Comparing recent Star Fox Zero footage to what was shown in June, it's clear Nintendo made the right call when it delayed the Wii U game to April 22, 2016.

Besides visual upgrades, the extra time is going toward improving the GamePad experience and "further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes," according to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto.

A couple of new clips were posted to the official Japanese site, and they're worth watching.

#SaveBubsy

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

Almost did a spit-take when I saw this slide into my inbox today. Apparently, Retroism is on the quest to save Bubsy (yes, the platforming feline with radical CATtitude) and wants your help to do it. They're re-releasing two of Bubsy's “classic” adventures under the name of The Bubsy Two-Fur through the Steam Greenlight system and they're asking you to pitch in and #SaveBubsy with your vote. Strange, I thought the Arcane Kids already did a great job of bringing Bubsy into the modern age.

Heroes of the Storm's two-player hero in action

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Cho'Gall looks every bit as delightfully ridiculous as I was hoping he'd be since his announcement during BlizzCon. The two-headed Ogre is a giant of a hero with a massive health pool and an assortment of wild attacks and skills. The catch? He's controlled by two players at the same time. One player controls his movement and melee skills, while the other hurls magic artillery at their foes and hopes the other guy knows what he's doing.

This video does a better job demonstrating what Cho'Gall will play like. He has a huge arsenal of skills to deploy, including melee attacks, ranged AoEs, and some control and engagement tools. However, many of his skills not only rely on good positioning, but on both players paying attention and activating their part of the attack at the proper time.

When controlled by a drift compatible power couple, it looks like Cho'Gall could be a real monster capable of taking on groups by himself (himselves?). But if the two players can't get on the same page, he'll be a huge liability. After all he takes up two-hero spots on a team and every time he dies it counts as a double kill for the enemy team.

I hope Disgaea on Steam is a sign of things to come

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

NIS is bringing the original Disgaea to Steam. Cool, right?

The strategy role-playing game will be available on PC in February with enhancements including an updated user interface and textures, Steam achievements and cloud saving, keyboard/mouse and gamepad support, and all of the content from Afternoon of Darkness.

Also, adorably, the name of this version is "Disgaea PC."

I have to imagine NIS will bring more titles from its back catalog to Steam if this does well, which I suspect it will. More ports besides Disgaea would be greatly appreciated.

Smash Bros. gets one more dedicated Direct, and it's happening next month

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

Last week's Nintendo Direct had a Smash-centric bombshell in the announcement of Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife coming to the game as DLC. That closed out the show, but the rest was dedicated to an array of other Nintendo titles. In December, Smash Bros. won't have to share the spotlight with anyone. It's getting its own Direct for the fourth and final time.

Next month's Direct is dedicated to Smash Bros. in its entirety. Nintendo hasn't given a date for the event yet, just that it's taking place in December. Nintendo says this will be the last Direct that only focuses on Smash. The game will be 13 months old at that point.

Of course, this doesn't mean it's necessarily the end of Smash news. Nintendo can still (and will likely) include it in its own segments of other events. Interest in the game remains high enough that Nintendo will keep it a priority.

There's a good probability that this final Smash Direct will clear up some unsettled business surrounding the game. It'd be a fine time to lay out some of the other planned add-ons and accompanying amiibo. Also, it was never revealed who the winner of the fan vote for DLC was. Don't expect Nintendo to be all out of bombshells; something tells me it still has a trick or two up its sleeve.

Nintendo successfully fends off another patent case against Wii U and 3DS

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

Nintendo's hardware seems to be a magnet for litigation. Everyone thinks the Wii U or the 3DS infringe on their patents, but Nintendo proves time and time again that they don't. The Japanese platform-holder has another successful defense to add to the long list of victories.

In 2012, Plaintiffs Technology Properties Limited LLC, Phoenix Digital Solutions LLC, and Patriot Scientific Corporation sued Nintendo in California federal court and in the International Trade Commission alleging patent infringement. Early last year, the ITC ruled no such infringement; on Friday of last week, California federal courts came to the exact same conclusion.

Via press release this morning, Nintendo took the opportunity to peacock and assert Wii U and 3DS' non-patent infringing ways. Ajay Singh, Nintendo of America's Director of Litigation and Compliance, said "We are very pleased with this decision, which again confirmed that Nintendo's products do not infringe." He continued "It also confirms that Nintendo continues to develop unique and innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. Nintendo will defend its products and its innovations, even if it must do so multiple times in different places and over many years."

Fallout 4 has a room with all the weapons and items, and it's easy to find

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Fallout 4's the type of game that's dripping with secrets for the community to discover. Its open world holds so much potential to hide things from players, knowing that they'll inevitably find them. One such room has been found in the PC version of the game, and it'll make anyone who goes there the Supreme Overlord of the Wasteland.

By using the console command "COC QASMOKE" on PC, players are transported to a room that looks to contain every item in the game. Everything anyone could want from weapons and apparel to magazines are sitting right there on a table. It's a bit game-breaking in that you don't have to actually play the game anymore to get the good stuff. Now you just need to brute force your way through quests.

It's unclear as to whether the room's inclusion is intentional. The "QA" part of the code leads to believe that it was maybe made for a tester to immediately try out any item under any circumstance. Either Bethesda forgot to take it out, or it wanted players to have the option of raiding the ultimate treasure chest.

PSA: Games with Gold cycles in the second half of November's lineup

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

As a reminder, Microsoft has cycled in the next bit of November's Games with Gold promotion as of today. You can pick up Knight Squad and Dungeon Siege III with your Gold membership, and Pneuma: Breath of Life is still free throughout the entire month.

I'd particularly recommend picking up Dungeon Siege III from the wonderful Obsidian. It's not the greatest dungeon crawler in the world and certainly has its issues, but for a free game it's a great way to spend a weekend.

My main man Cecil shows his stuff in latest Dissidia Final Fantasy trailer

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

Final Fantasy IV is still my favorite entry in the series. Having replayed it every few years or so I wouldn't say nostalgia fuels that claim, as it still has a fantastic soundtrack and an amazing cast -- "Spoony Bard" and all.

That's partially why I'm excited to play as Cecil in the upcoming Dissidia Final Fantasy arcade game (if it ever gets ported to the PS4). For those of you who prefer V, Bartz (Butz) might get you a tad more pumped, and you can view his footage below.

Fallout 4 modder unleashes every legendary enemy at once

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

Mods can elevate a game to make it better than the developer originally intended, or unleash some good old fashioned silly fun out into the world. This mod for Fallout 4 is the latter, as YouTuber Cosmic Contrarian basically just popped every legendary enemy into one spot for a bloodbath.

I'm placing the video below the fold, as it clearly contains spoilers for upcoming enemies -- don't watch it if you haven't played much of the game yet. Also, maybe watch it on mute if you're at work. On second thought just mute it regardless.

The Game of Thrones finale trailer hopes you have been following along

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 02:45 AM PST

Don't watch the trailer below if you aren't caught up with the first five episodes of Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series. It highlights a lot of the major choices from the previous episodes, including the one right at the end of Episode Five, A Nest of Vipers.

At 3:14 in the video, the proper trailer for Episode Six, The Ice Dragon begins. It has war, wargs, Whitehills, and whitewalkers. You know, all the stuff you'd expect in a story about a doomed house in Westeros.

No wonder Uncharted 3 was so average: Nolan North had broken ribs during filming

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

Did You Know Gaming has another video in store for us, and this time it deals with the Uncharted series. One of the most interesting bits is definitely the fact that Nolan North broke two of his ribs before the filming of the mocap action sequences in Uncharted 3, which would partially explain why the game felt off. That, and the guy who played "Cutter" in the game left to go film The Hobbit, which explains why he basically broke his leg in Drake's Deception and isn't seen again.

I also completely forgot that the first game was unveiled in 2006, and I still haven't bought into Drake's "everyman appeal," especially after seeing how many people at Naughty Dog tried to sell him as the ultimate everyman.

I love little factoid productions like this, and it would be awesome to see a fully fledged TV show from this crew.

Reminder: Super Star Wars comes out this week on PSN

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST

As a reminder, Super Star Wars will hit the PSN this week (PS4 and Vita with Cross-Buy). It was part of a classic trilogy for the SNES, and was basically a re-telling of A New Hope, through the veil of an action platformer -- it was an awesome game. I hope that the release of the first game is testing the waters, because hot damn Empire and Jedi had some amazing 2D boss fights.

Supposedly it has been "enhanced," but it seems like that just entails "new save features, leaderboards, trophies, and updated display and controller options." We'll try to provide more updates as the game is released.

Walmart will have a 'minimum' of 21 Modern Mario amiibo for Black Friday

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST

According to Walmart's Black Friday ad, it will have a "minimum" of 21 Modern Color Mario amiibo at its stores. For those of you who are wondering why this matters, the figure was previously exclusive to a Wii U bundle in the US, making it pretty difficult to obtain. Since Black Friday has been becoming more and more of a garbage "holiday," Walmart's sales will again "officially" start at 6PM on Thursday when most friends or family would be eating Thanksgiving dinner.

I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I don't suggest going out to Walmart on Black Friday just for this. Just pay the nominal import fee of $4 to $7 and be done with it. It's a very common figure overseas.

Yes, the first game breaking Fallout 4 bug has been found

Posted: 15 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST

It was only a matter of time, but the first repeatable game breaking bug has been found in Fallout 4. We all knew this was coming.

The bug, which crashes to desktop on PC, is triggered as part of a settlement quest where players are sent to Monsignor Plaza. When trying to travel there as part of the quest, the game crashes. It's unclear if the same bug effects console players.

You can read more about the bug on the Bethesda forums. The developer has not yet responded to complaints about the issue, so it's unknown if a fix is coming.

One million players have 'warped in' StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void

Posted: 15 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST

In just three days since launch, one million people have "warped in" in StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.

The news was confirmed via a tweet from the official StarCraft Twitter account.

Still undecided? Check out our  thoughts in our StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Review

"If you're invested in StarCraft II's story already, you likely won't be disappointed by Legacy of the Void's tale. If you haven't played any form of StarCraft II yet and are intrigued by the prospect of another RTS, this is probably the strongest the game has ever been. It's a perfect time to jump in."

Watch the first in-game footage of Friday the 13th The Game

Posted: 15 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST

To celebrate hitting its Kickstarter success, Gun Media - the team behind upcoming horror Friday the 13th The Game - has released a "RARE glimpse" of the work-in-progress game.

"This is a RARE glimpse into a game development prototype build that we’re using to test and prove out gameplay design concept. All of the assets, character models, animations, etc… are temporary assets, put in place so we can test in a reasonable context. The art, sound effects, music and gameplay are not final by any means."

Design documents for a sequel to Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura uncovered

Posted: 15 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

Way back in 2001, gone-but-not-forgotten developer Troika released Arcanum: Of Steamworks of Magick Obscura. It was an utterly fantastic (if buggy) RPG set in a vast, strange steampunk fantasy world where the long-established magical forces were being dampened by the new industrial revolution.

This was long before steampunk became synonymous with simply whacking a few gears and some brass plating onto something and calling it done: Arcanum explored how Victorian social values would apply in a world where half-orcs and dwarves wander the streets. It also had realistic architecture and one of the greatest soundtracks of any game ever. The entire thing was fantastic, and if you haven’t played it yet you really, really should.

Unfortunately, Troika had to shut its doors a few years later due to the poor commercial performance of its games. It never released the sequel to Arcanum we were looking forward to. We’ve known that Journey to the Center of Arcanum was to be the title of it for a few years now, and we’ve also known that it was going to be a first-person RPG in the Source engine. What we didn’t know is where the game was to draw its influences from, what the story would have been, or really anything else about it.

Fast forward 14 years and RPG Codex has managed to uncover a design document of what could have been Journey to the Center of Arcanum. It was to be a game more similar to the likes of Deus Ex and Ultima Underworld than the original:

In JTCA (Journey to the Center of Arcanum), we hope to incorporate the best aspects of the most popular first-person RPG’s on the market, as well as include a new direction, one that is inherently Troika’s. If Arcanum has proved anything, it is that we know how to craft a well-balanced RPG, with memorable characters, a compelling story, and a character-development system that is second to none. The dichotomy between magick and technology gave us a perfect game environment to create an almost infinite number of playing styles, and we hope to translate that same environment into a 3-D world.

We hope to achieve a similar gaming environment as was presented in Half-Life or Deus Ex. The complexity of the levels in Half-Life, as well as the obvious care that was put into their design, created a game that was both fun and challenging at all levels. The use of puzzles and the intelligent placement of enemies helped players learn the use of the items presented to them, as well increasing their skill in items they previously had. The puzzles in JTCA would make the best use of these items, offering multiple solutions for every puzzle…

… As thieving in Arcanum very important, we hope to incorporate the best game-play mechanics of games like Thief and Thief 2. By allowing the player to move in the shadows, and to move quietly among enemies, we hope to offer a different kind of playing style than the mage, warrior or technologist. Strategy and success will be rewarded with audio and visual cues. Story elements will also support this playing style, as the Thieves Underground did in Arcanum.

This design document was confirmed to be real by ex-Troika developer Tim Cain (also of Fallout fame). Previous parts of the document describe some of the changes to the world’s lore, including the introduction of new technology that allowed it and magic to co-exist, which apparently wasn’t something Cain liked the sound of:

Yes, Troika was working on a "Journey To The Center Of Arcanum" treatment, and yes, it was going to use the Source engine.

[...] I have three or four treatments for JttCoA, and they are all different. One I remember writing, and it is full of game system ideas, for skills and attribute changes. Another is written from the basis of using the Tribes engine instead of Source. Neither of those went to publishers either. We just wrote them as a "what if?" scenario to toss around during design meetings. Drog's [the person who released the design document to RPG Codex] document looks like one of those.

[...] So to clear things up...yes, this is a Troika doc on one possible treatment of JttCoA. I didn't write it, but I think I know who did. I never liked the "new metal which combines magick and tech" idea, because I thought it undermined the main motif of Arcanum, but the writer liked the idea, so he wrote it up for a design meeting. The doc was never intended to be sent to a publisher, just for us to read for a meeting, but I sent it to show the fan some of the ideas we were considering.

Journey to the Center of Arcanum seems like it really could’ve been great had it ever actually happened, and now I need to go and be sad for the rest of the day that it never did. However, it’s also interesting to potentially see its influence on later games such as Troika’s Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Seriously, Arcanum was great, and I would give any limbs required to have Journey to the Center of Arcanum happen.

Fallout 4 has the third biggest UK launch of the year

Posted: 15 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST

You might not have noticed, but Fallout 4 released last week. I know, I know, it was kind of snuck out and didn’t get much fanfare, so I totally won’t blame you if you somehow managed to miss it.

However, you might be interested to know that in only a week it’s managed to become one of the biggest UK launches of the year so far.

GfK Chart-Track has announced two things about Fallout 4: firstly, it’s the biggest ever launch of a Fallout game. Bethesda had a massive boost of popularity and was pushed into the wider public consciousness when it launched Skyrim. Plus it’s been five years since the last Fallout game to make the long-time players even more eager, so this bit isn't all that surprising.

Fallout 4 has also enjoyed the third biggest launch week in the UK, behind FIFA 16 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.  FIFA has always had an absolutely massive player base in the UK, and Call of Duty still has more brand recognition than Fallout, so again it's nice to have confirmed but not all that surprising.

What it does mean, however, is that Fallout 4 has managed to overtake The Witcher 3, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Grand Theft Auto V to potentially win this year’s battle of the ridiculously-too-big-to-ever-actually-finish games.

Worth noting that, as always, these charts don't include digital versions of the games listed, and as more and more games are being bought digitally these days the rankings might be skewed slightly.

Now to see whether this popularity continues through Bethesda’s run of planned DLC for Fallout 4 in 2016.
