Posted: 14 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST Asymmetric multiplayer is not an easy feat to pull off efficiently. Sure, it's relatively simple to create two gameplay styles within the same game, but to make them blend together to create a unique ebb and flow is something that's not seen too often. Clandestine attempts to hit that level of gameplay by utilizing third-person stealth mechanics and a separate "hacker" interface, neither of which can exist without the other. The idea isn't flawless, but dang can it create a good time.
Binding of Isaac's ARG is over, unlocks new character Posted: 14 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST The craziness and drama surrounding the release of The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth has been almost as fun as the game itself (which in my opinion is pretty damn fun). As reported two weeks ago, the initial launch of the expansion was accompanied by widespread confusion from the fanbase when it appeared that several items that were supposed to be included in it were not accessible. From there things quickly took a life of their own, and what seemed like a cheeky prank from a developer having a laugh at dataminers who spoiled his last big surprise was actually part of a much larger and complex scheme. An unbelievably complex ARG that included ciphers hidden in achievement pictures, cryptic tweets disguising clues, and creepy backwards voicemails in a complex breadcrumb trail of clues that eventually led a group of hardcore Isaac fans to a building in Santa Ana, California to dig up the truth.
Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns won't change your opinion of Guild Wars Posted: 14 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST My experience with Guild Wars 2 has been very similar to a lot of people I've met over the years. We all agree it's a wonderful, beautiful take on MMOs, and delivers on its promise of a subscription-free game. But at the same time, we often find ourselves gravitating towards other games every few months on a more consistent basis, like Final Fantasy XIV. Guild Wars 2 is a massive success for ArenaNet, who is always listening to its fanbase for adjustments and the like, but it doesn't offer up a lot of endgame activities or structures that hardcore MMO fans are usually accustomed to. The developer's recent Heart of Thorns expansion is basically more of the same, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on your initial experience.
Watch me stream the Wii version of Rodea The Sky Soldier Posted: 14 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST Watch live video from Destructoid on www.twitch.tv Curious about the Wii version of Rodea: The Sky Soldier? Chris was able to review the Wii U edition and talk briefly about the 3DS one, but a lot of people have been asking about covering it on Wii, so here you go. I'm streaming the first two hours of the game starting at 3:00 pm PT. Fly into this adventure with me and see how often I fail playing this long-awaited game for the first time, live on Twitch!
Highschool Romance is a visual novel where a boy attends an all-girl school Posted: 14 Nov 2015 08:15 AM PST Shoji's crazy parents are at it again! Due to a "mixup," you've been sent an an all-girls school. But have no fear -- the principal has decided that rather than simply send you to the correct one, you'll just dress up like a girl to fit in. Oh that wacky Shoji! This setup is for a visual novel game called Highschool Romance, due out next week on Steam. You can check out reviews for developer AJ Tilley's other games here. I haven't played a lot of visual novels myself lately outside of Steins;Gate. Man, I need to watch the Steins;Gate anime again. Highschool Romance [Steam]
Someone recreated the piano scene from Big in Fallout 4 Posted: 14 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST Settlement building in Fallout 4 isn't as user friendly or refined as it should be (I'd like my garden of melons to not float three feet off the ground, if at all possible), but that isn't going to hold people back from making impressive things. Take, for instance, this walking piano:
Everything from the November Nintendo Direct Posted: 14 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST That Nintendo Direct won E3. With a far better showing than its June event (sans the amazing puppets), Nintendo knocked it out of the park. While the Direct itself would have won over many fans, it blew up the entire Internet on Thursday with the unveiling of Cloud Strife in Super Smash Bros. Here's everything else that happened.
Want to play an 8-bit version of Odin Sphere in your browser? Take to Twitter Posted: 14 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST Atlus of Japan has just announced a neat little promotion for their upcoming ports of Odin Sphere. If 28,888 people tweet out that they're interested, we'll unlock an 8-bit browser version of the game. Based on the footage it looks like a severely minimalist cut, and Atlus hasn't actually finished it yet, but it will arrive eventually. Since it's only been a day (and is already over 20,000 tweets) and the event is being held until November 30, there's plenty of time. Odin Sphere [Atlus] Thanks Jeff!
Gravity Rush Remastered is getting a physical release in North America Posted: 14 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST There was discouraging talk of Gravity Rush Remastered being a digital-only release in North America, but as it turns out, a physical version is in the works after all. Amazon has opened pre-orders for the PlayStation 4 game. It's releasing on February 9, 2016 for $29.99. Someone must have decided the box art was simply too good not to use.
Clannad is coming to Steam on November 23 Posted: 14 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST An English release of Clannad is coming to Steam on November 23, Sekai Project has announced. The ultra-sad visual novel tells the story of a high school delinquent whose life turns around after meeting a strange older girl. It was first released in Japanese for PC in 2004, and has since been released on various other platforms and adapted into manga, anime, and audio formats. Clannad [Steam]
| Target exclusive Timmy and Tommy Nook amiibo sighted, Roy exclusive to GameStop Posted: 14 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST Being an amiibo collector is an expensive hobby. But really, limiting yourself to the Super Smash Bros. line wasn't all that impossible to do. It's the other waves that are starting to get out of control, particularly Animal Crossing -- I have no affinity towards most of those characters. But still, we're getting eight this month, and four in January. Oh, and it looks like Timmy and Tommy Nook (one figure) were found at a Target kiosk, as an exclusive. That pair hasn't even been confirmed yet, and this will make it the second Target exclusive for the Crossing series after Lottie, who launches on November 22. In other news, Rover and Kapp'n have been confirmed, and Roy will be a GameStop exclusive. Famicom (Japan) colored R.O.B. is looking like it will see a localization as well. | Posted: 14 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST You didn't think I'd miss the next Dissidia Final Fantasy Arcade video just because it was the weekend, did you? I'm really digging this series off of a portable and onto proper hardware. Let's hope that Square Enix's potential plans for a PS4 port come through. For reference, they've mentioned that it was a possibility, but not until the arcade version shipped. |
Xenoblade Chronicles X is sprawling and unforgiving, and I love that Posted: 14 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST I've played MMOs with smaller zones than Xenoblade Chronicles X. The scale here is absolutely breathtaking, and a mite surreal once you realize that you're playing on the Wii U, where the development team couldn't even optimize the game on a single disc. Here's a few thoughts after spending a ton of time with the experience.
| Doujin mecha shooter Steel Strider out now Posted: 14 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST Steel Strider, the sequel to Gigantic Army, is now available on Steam, Nyu Media has announced. The new shooter comes from Astro Port, the Japanese indie team behind this summer's Tokusatsu-inspired STG Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser, though this one is more of an homage to classic run-and-gun games like Turrican and Super Contra than cheesy '70s-era television. If romping around the galaxy in a manned combat robot and being an interstellar peace-keeper sounds like your idea of a good time, you can download Steel Strider now for $5.99 / £4.79 / €5.99. | DestrUKtoid Episode 26 - Escape The Fart Posted: 14 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST The UK, it exists and Destructoid now has writers there. Great British Pounds. Eastenders. Steptoe and Son. The Destructoid UK Podcast (DestrUKtoid). This week UK Editor Laura Dale is joined by Joe Parlock and Vikki Blake to talk about getting taped to a billboard, killed in an end of the world wasteland and climbing a mountain to look for historical treasures. Have a listen on iTunes or direct download. |
This is likely our first look at the Ryu amiibo Posted: 13 Nov 2015 11:31 PM PST Nintendo is slow to provide nearly any news for upcoming amiibo, outside of some recent exceptions for bundles. Basically, we have very little idea of what newer amiibo even look like, or where they may be exclusive. While we know nothing about the latter right now, Twitter user FanLoxx caught a look at Ryu from a Toys"R"Us terminal, and it looks appropriately legit. Lucas will arrive in January alongside of the second wave of Animal Crossing amiibo, so it would stand to reason that Ryu would follow that release. For those of you who are interested, here's a full listing of upcoming amiibo. FanLoxx [Twitter]
