Walmart Black Friday deals include amiibo, $250 Wii U, $299 PS4, and more

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST

Best Black Friday, one of the many sites dedicated to collating deals available during the ebony-black altar of consumerism and bloodlust known as Black Friday, has published an early version of Walmart's ad, detailing its enormous post-Thanksgiving bargains.

The deals I find particularly interesting are the Modern 8-Bit Mario amiibo, a $35 copy of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a $250 Super Smash Bros./Splatoon Deluxe Wii U bundle, a $299 Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection bundle, and $40 Xbox One/DualShock 4 controllers.

The ad itself is slightly blurry, so the stacks of games may be difficult to parse, but there's a variety of deals for the early morning bargain hunter. Here's a list of everything I could see from the ad scan as it currently stands.

Steam analyst claims 1.2 million people owned Fallout 4 at launch

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

Sergey Galyonkin, the man behind Steam analytics site SteamSpy, recently published some initial thoughts on Fallout 4's PC launch via Twitter. Galyonkin acknowledged the unreliability inherent to the way the site pulls in data, reminding his followers that the initial figure was not perfect.

That said, SteamSpy currently has Fallout 4 at 1,287,128 copies sold as of November 10, give or take about 28,000, including pre-orders sold before launch. The site also reports a peak of 471,083 people playing concurrently and 244,138 people watching Fallout 4 Twitch streams. There's a lot of data available for the curious, right down to geographical information for users with registered SteamSpy accounts. (A lot of people in the United States have been playing Fallout 4, as it turns out.)

According to Galyonkin, we have another three days before the site will publish a more reliable estimate. "Usually, in cases like these I just outright delete day 1 and start with day 2," Galyonkin wrote in a Tweet published earlier today. The website's 'about' page says that SteamSpy pulls data from Steam user information, accounting for a fairly sizable margin of error. "The data is based on several days samples: from three days for individual apps to seven days for location-based info. It means that Steam Spy is completely unreliable for recently released games."

If you find marginally unreliable video game statistics as fascinating as I do, give the rest of Galyonkin's graphs a look. The Black Ops III data in particular is very revealing.

PEGI site lists Minecraft for Wii U

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST

PEGI, also known as the Pan European Game Information (the video games rating board for most PAL territories), may have leaked a Minecraft port for the Wii U via its official website, apparently set for release tomorrow, November 12. The game will be rated '7' for 'spiders' and 'lighting fist' -- or, as PEGI puts it, 'Fear' and 'Violence.'

Since Minecraft: Story Mode's Wii U port runs on the original Minecraft engine, folks speculated back in September that we would be eventually seeing a version of the wildly popular building game on Nintendo's latest console. Ever since purchasing Minecraft, Microsoft has indicated it will continue to support the game on competing platforms.

This will not be the first time a Microsoft property has appeared on a Nintendo platform, the first being Banjo-Pilot for the Game Boy Advance and the second being Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise. (According to several members of the Dtoid community, I also forgot to mention the two Age of Empires, the two Zoo Tycoons, and the two Blue Dragon games released for the Nintendo DS)

League of Legends' latest character is Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 11:45 AM PST

Riot really has a knack for designing awesome looking characters -- the latest Champion for League of Legends is no exception -- and Illaoi looks particularly cool. Her conceit is that she can summon tentacles for strong zoning potential, and periodically spawns them across the battlefield.

Her coolest ability is Test of Spirit, where she can literally rip out an opponent's soul, which your team can attack to cripple that character. I'm pretty excited to try her out!

Liam Neeson and Stephen Colbert star in Candy Crush: The Movie

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

Stephen Colbert continues his streak of being super video game friendly by creating Candy Crush: The Movie starring himself and Liam Neeson (best known for sci-fi classic Krull and the Taken trilogy).

The clip starts with Colbert talking up the recent news of Activision Blizzard buying King, the maker of Candy Crush, as well as the company's opening of a movie studio to produce films and television shows based on its IPs.

Liam Neeson acts his ass off in this clip, showing that he deserves better than Taken and Taken-like films. Personally, I'm just hoping for a Krull sequel.

The new Xbox One dashboard rolls out tonight

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST

November is flying by me. It's nearly time for the new Xbox One dashboard update, and you know what that means: backward compatibility! The initial list of supported Xbox 360 games falls short of my expectations, but it'll improve with time, and I am jazzed to play some Doom II with an Xbox One controller. There are some things to know about the update, however.

The current plan is to begin the rollout at 3:01am Eastern / 12:01am Pacific on November 12. As such, "not everyone will get the update at once," depending on time zones and system settings.

Also, no matter when you get the console update, the backward compatibility feature won't start rolling out until 3:01pm Eastern / 12:01pm Pacific on November 12. If you were going to stay up late for that stuff specifically, a change of plans is probably in order.

Review: Moco Moco Friends

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST

While the concept of catching cute monsters and battling them is innately linked to the iconic Pokémon series, I'm hesitant to plaster the word "clone" over similar games, as RPGs have had party-based systems for decades. But every so often a title comes along that's so close to that concept, comparisons are unavoidable.

Moco Moco Friends is one such game, but it doesn't hit most of the same high notes.

The first wave of Nintendo mobile games will all be free-to-play

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST

The first few games born out of Nintendo and DeNA's partnership to create mobile titles will follow the ever-so-popular free-to-play model. As these things go, the games will be free to download, and they'll depend on in-app microtransactions to pull in revenue.

This confirmation comes out of a Wall Street Journal report. It had been widely expected that Nintendo would dip its toes into the free-to-play waters, but nothing had been explicitly stated. DeNA executive Isao Moriyasu broke the news during an earnings briefing.

Nintendo's goal is to have five mobile games released by March 2017. Moriyasu wouldn't reveal how many of those are currently in development. However many it is, those ones will all be free-to-play. After that, assuming no major market changes, we can probably expect more of the same because free just makes the most money right now.

Oh Halo no: 343 flooded with reports of Halo 5 multiplayer rank resets

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

Some who have dumped several hours in Halo 5's multiplayer over the past two weeks might see an unwelcome sight when they turn on the game. There's a chance that their multiplayer progress has been reset. That's the nightmare scenario come true for a lot of players.

Right now, Halo Waypoint's forum is littered with threads from people who have been hit with the mystery reset. Reports state that the reset impacts rank, commendations, REQ, and other things. Developer 343 Industries doesn't have an explanation for the situation, just that it's "working on a solution."

The silver lining is that the unintentional wipe doesn't seem to be permanent. Some users are reporting that everything's back to normal now. While 343 looks into the cause, Halo 5's matchmaking might be affected. That's okay -- word is that there are a few other games for Xbox One players to enjoy.

Review: Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward (Patch 3.1)

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward was a tremendous expansion, all things considered. It brought in a whole new storyline that was worth getting invested in, new classes, and tons of additional activities including a raid. But that was back in June -- MMOs need to constantly throw out content to keep people interested, especially if they sport a subscription fee.

While XIV is more packed than a lot of other titles (if you choose to dig into PVP, crafting, and RP activities), the worthwhile, meaty content dropped off sometime after the introduction of the Savage version of Alexander. While patch 3.1 is a stop-gap of sorts, it brings in a few brand new concepts that will help breathe some fresh life into the game for a while longer.

J.J. Abrams and Chair are making a spy game

The director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek is teaming up with the studio behind Infinity Blade and Shadow Complex for an "action-strategy" espionage title called Spyjinx.

The creators at Bad Robot Interactive and Chair don't have anything to show yet, but for what it's worth, they are using Unreal Engine 4. According to Chair co-founder Donald Mustard, there will be "a healthy dose of RPG character development," and "really dynamic world building."

New Yooka-Laylee character channels old school graphics

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Ever since the announcement that Team17 would be publishing the Kickstarter-funded Banjo-Kazooie-like Yooka-Laylee, news has been pretty quiet on it. There have been a couple of backer updates, including one showing a cute skeleton girl, but nothing major.

IGN got some special access to developer Playtonic, and it has some behind-the-scenes looks scheduled for tomorrow, but today it let us know about a new character named Rextro Sixtyfourus. Rextro's role is the guardian of the old arcade machines in each level, so his design is meant to hearken back to the bad ol' days of low-polygon models.

That said, he looks pretty good! The design definitely evokes the Nintendo 64 style, but it looks nicer in HD. His textures almost remind me a bit of Viva Piñata, like I could bust him open for some candy. Going the extra mile, he even features a custom shader that gives him scan lines, as if he were being viewed on an old CRT television. Check out the image in the gallery to see it up close.

What is going on with this Dragon's Crown figure?

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

I'm almost at a loss for words other than to say you don't know what you've got until it's gone.

The last Dragon's Crown Amazon figure (that I've seen, anyway) was over the top in ways you would expect given the source material, but that design now looks respectable compared to what's happening here. If you don't mind my asking, uh, what exactly is happening here?

Is Rise of the Tomb Raider the best Uncharted?

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

Both Crystal Dynamics and Microsoft lucked out that the tumult behind Uncharted 4: A Thief's End's development shift and scrapped work pushed Naughty Dog's adventure into 2016. It gives Microsoft the best exclusive holiday line-up for the second year running and positions Tomb Raider ahead of Uncharted. For whatever the latter owed to the original Lara Croft games, both owed to a deeper legacy (including Indiana Jones, which released in 1981 and was itself a somewhat romanticized take on the '40s complete with villainous Nazis).

That jockeying for position matters somewhat. The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot built upon Uncharted's iteration in the genre. I can't remember a single non-Croftian character from the original Tomb Raiders (aside from Gerard Butler and Daniel Craig in those Angelina Jolie-led films), whereas the reboot shines a light on Lara's personal relationships, just without Uncharted's breezy quips.

First screens for Game of Thrones finale are non-canon (for me)

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

The long-awaited season finale for Telltale's Game of Thrones series following House Forrester is almost here. It releases next week, but today we have a few tastes of what to expect. Mira looks like she's in trouble with the Lannisters and Gared makes a new bear friend while searching out the North Grove. As expected, the two feuding houses of Forrester and Whitehill are preparing for all-out war.

These screens highlight the slightly different journeys that could have led to this point. One screen in particular has three inconsistencies with my decisions, as I had [REDACTED] choose [REDACTED] as [REDACTED] in Iron From Ice, I had [REDACTED] kill [REDACTED] in A Nest of Vipers, and I chose to have [REDACTED] survive the [REDACTED] instead of [REDACTED] at the end of that same episode. My screen of that scene will look pretty different.

Some day, I'm going to write about this game and not have to censor out the spoilers.

Guitar Hero TV adds Iggy Pop and White Stripes this week

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

I'm surprised at how much I'm still playing Guitar Hero Live. It's really easy for me to boot up the TV function and just play random songs, which cycle in new tracks on a constant basis. I have over a hundred "free plays" and I rarely use them -- I think the system really works.

Starting tomorrow, a few new songs (below) will be added to the game. The obvious highlights include The White Stripes and Iggy Pop, but I'm sure the rest will appeal to someone. I recently had a chance to chat with  the lead developer of Live, and he stated that "once a song was added to Guitar Hero TV, it stays there." So right now, the plan is to add to an ever-evolving catalog.

Buy tickets to see Dead or Alive's Itagaki in court

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

I say "Dead or Alive's Itagaki" because perhaps you forgot about the brash Team Ninja head. You wouldn't be at fault. Since leaving Team Ninja in 2008 all he's managed to put out is Devil's Third, an incredibly poorly received Wii U game that Itagaki has defended by blaming people for not playing it correctly or well enough.

But Itagaki is currently in the news because his Devil's Third development studio Valhalla Game Studios treads too closely to movie studio Valhalla Motion Pictures, the latter claims. The film company currently produces The Walking Dead and has been around nearly three times as long as the Devil's Third developer.

The trial is Friday, November 13 at at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and is totally open to the public for $105 per ticket. "Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided."

Cat Mario is still adorable in his Super Mario Maker 8-bit form

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

I'm still miffed that the costumes in Super Mario Maker only work in their 8-bit renditions, but you have to give it to Nintendo for adding so many to the game. Next up on the block is Cat Mario and Cat Peach, which can be unlocked by playing their respective courses in event mode.

The checkpoint update was a step in the right direction, and I hope they continue to add more missing features to the game, like slopes.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III biggest launch of 2015 at $550 million

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

Call of Duty: Black Ops III made a lot of money in three days. And while that's not surprising, it is notable, given that the series sales had been in a bit of a decline with Ghosts and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.

I guess the return to the familiar, well-received Black Ops sub-series worked.

Activision says "retail sales up significantly over last two years" and that digital sales are double those of last year (it's also the best selling day-one digital PS4 game). The three day opening weekend sales total over $550 million. Black Ops III even managed to move 164,716 copies in Japan, mostly on PS4, making it the top-selling Japanese title for the week.

PSA: Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival is not a free download, it's actually a $60 bundle

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 03:15 AM PST

Well, this kind of came out of nowhere, and I don't see a lot of people talking about it.

Earlier this year during E3, Nintendo reps informed multiple outlets that Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival would be a free eShop download, and all you would need is one figure to play it -- similar to the amiibo Tap: Greatest Bits app. But it seems as if they have changed course.

As confirmed by Nintendo to Destructoid today, amiibo Festival is a $60 retail game and not a download. For that price, you'll get the disc as well as two figures -- Isabelle and Digby -- and three amiibo cards. Scanning a figure to the GamePad will allow you to play as that character, and the game itself supports one to four players. Nintendo did not comment as to whether or not the amiibo would be available separately, or what the "limited time offer" logo means for Digby on the box. I can confirm that the toys will not be packaged individually, as was the case with Mario in the Mario Party 10 bundle -- sorry collectors.

I was initially excited for this but $60 is pretty rich, as not even Wii Party U  was this expensive, and that came with a controller. It looks like Nintendo is really trying to incorporate amiibo into lesser known games that are more prone to fail, like the recent Chibi-Robo toy that was held hostage by the game bundle in the US. As a reminder, Festival is offline-only, and you only need one controller (the GamePad) to play, which is passed around to everyone involved.

Please don't add amiibo support to Mighty No. 9, Inafune

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

Since there is another way to monetize Mighty No. 9, Keiji Inafune is considering it.

When asked by USGamer regarding the possibility of amiibo in the game, Inafune responded, "That's definitely an option for us, and if we have the opportunity to do it, then we'll definitely take the chance. And also, we know for a fact a lot of our backers are Nintendo fans, because we ran a platform survey [for Mighty No. 9], and we see how many people are choosing Nintendo hardware. So it's definitely something we have to look into."

After reflecting on it, I'm not big on the idea of indies supporting amiibo. For one, now that the cat is out of the bag regarding the fact that the developer itself will have to handle production, it doesn't paint a good picture in terms of stock. This will be a nightmare if people can't pick up the Shovel Knight amiibo, as the huge feature of co-op is gated behind it. With all of the delays and debacles surrounding Mighty No. 9, this is just another potential mess waiting to happen.

Sonic creator asks you play Wii version of his new Wii U, 3DS game

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST

Rodea: The Sky Soldier went through a heck of a development cycle and somehow came out the other side but not unscathed. Chris gave it a good score, though he noted, "the game's tumultuous development process bleeds through the finished product despite its charms."

The same cannot be said for the inferior 3DS version.

But it doesn't matter anyways as Sonic-creator and Rodea-head Yuji Naka suggests that everyone just play the original Wii version instead. It came as a bonus with all launch-date Wii U copies of the game.

That Friday the 13th game cleared its $700,000 Kickstarter goal

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

I'm pretty sure everyone expected this, but the Friday the 13th game has cleared its Kickstarter goal of $700,000, with only a few days to spare -- something tells me it won't reach the $5.5 million mark for its stretch goals.

While a lot of people are hyped up with this concept, it has the potential to be pretty horrible if it isn't executed perfectly. There have been plenty of asymmetric games before, and I'm sure there will be plenty of video fodder abound for this, but I'm not sold yet until I get my hands on it.

Watch a complete breakdown of Street Fighter V's Dhalsim

Dhalsim is a relatively new reveal for Street Fighter V, and VesperArcade already has a great 15 minute breakdown of what to expect in his current incarnation. He's described as SFV's biggest zoner, and his moveset and even his basic movements are extremely unconventional.

I don't think I'm going to dig his style, but he looks like a unique inclusion -- hopefully an upcoming beta will allow us to experiment with him.

Failing to go to orbit in Destiny after an activity will nullify postmaster rewards

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST

So this is a weird one.

Over at the Destiny subreddit, they've uncovered something surprising, straight from Bungie. According to the official help section of the game's site, failing to go to orbit after an activity (read: a raid or Strike) will forfeit all of your postmaster rewards (anything you didn't pick up off the ground, or rolls off the map).

This sounds obvious, but it's really not. After each raid is complete I typically use the "change character" function before I return to orbit, as it's a way faster means of swapping characters. Also, I generally log off immediately after my third raid of the week to do other things. There's really no point in going to orbit anymore with the dawn of the app, which allows you to swap items for your avatars. It's also not obvious at all that items are randomly lost by doing any number of these functions, including putting the PS4 into rest mode.

For all you Destiny players out there, this is a PSA of sorts, and something to be aware of. I've probably missed out on a ton of Exotic engrams because of this.

F1 2016 is going to have some 'new and exciting features'

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST

Good news for you F1 video game fans, F1 2016 is apparently going to have some "new and exciting features" for you. What are they? We have no idea.

According to a blog post on the Codemasters' website, we were told that these features will include "a couple of must haves which we know are important to you."

So, let's hypothetically say it knows which features are important to me in a new F1 game. Time for F1 2016 to essentially become a Mario Kart clone with butts rather than turtle shells to throw. Bring it on Codemasters, I'm glad you know which features are important to me going forward.

MapleStory is getting a VR game for some reason

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

When I was younger, I always confused 2D anime MMO MapleStory with other 2D anime MMO Gaia Online. I wasn't a particularly bright kid. MapleStory had a cool idea by mixing up normal MMO trappings by making the game a 2D platformer. Then MapleStory 2 happened and forgot about what made the original so interesting by turning it into your bog-standard 3D MMO. Bummer.

So what better way to celebrate a troubled series of MMOs than uh… making a VR version of it for a convention in South Korea? That’s exactly what Nexon is doing, as it has announced it will be showing off MapleStory VR at the G-Star event in Busan, South Korea from November 19-22.

The game will be compatible with both the Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear, and we’ve got a video of it in action, courtesy of MMO Culture.

We don’t even know if it is an MMO, or just a VR game set in the MapleStory universe. Either way it’s not exactly the VR .hack or Sword Art Online game we’ve been waiting for, but it’s kind of cute so I’ll allow it. Still an utterly bizarre choice though.
