Dtoid Designs: The 5 best Halloween Super Mario Maker levels Posted: 31 Oct 2015 02:30 PM PDT Last month we asked you, the Destructoid community, to show us your level creation skills with the first Dtoid Designs contest. The challenge was to create a Super Mario Maker level based on the theme of Halloween and you guys did not disappoint. Several dozen of you answered the call and responded with ghost houses, ghost ships, tributes to Horror video games, one stage that was nothing but dicks and several that will benefit from next month's update introducing checkpoints. Some levels were okay, many were good but only a handful were great enough to make to the top 5.
They Call Me Spooky: Until Dawn, Death, and Expectations Posted: 31 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT [Sometimes we approach a game with a plan, but the game has different plans in mind. For October's Bloggers Wanted response, Wutangclam tells us about his experience with Until Dawn and how it changed his expectations. - Pixie The Fairy] I wanted a couple of things from Until Dawn. I wanted to have fun, of course, and enjoy a game that I didn't know too much about outside of the little bit of marketing it had prior to release. The game had a cast of playable characters - high school stereotypes that anyone familiar with horror as a concept could recognize - and all of them could live or die based off of the player's decision.
Video game ghost stories #3: Buried in the ground Posted: 31 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT Journal Entry #1: I moved to a new town today. It was a last-minute decision, and I didn't even have a place picked out, so it was a little scary. Luckily, a raccoon named Nook showed me some really cheap houses to rent, so I now have a home to call my own (even if it's really small). I guess Nook owns all the properties here? He seemed friendly enough, I suppose, although he was kind of pushy. Well I'm just glad I have a place to stay. The Gyroid thing out front is kind of weird though... it moves around a lot and surprises me. I don't know why, but it looks really sad. Anyway... tomorrow is a big day. I should get some sleep.
Five Nights at Freddy's World looks... strange Posted: 31 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT Creator Scott Cawthon has revealed his plans for the Five Nights at Freddy's series and it seems he's taking things in a different direction. Ditching the horror, jump scare craziness that has defined the Freddy's experience, the next game in the series, Five Nights at Freddy's World, will be a cutesy JRPG. Players will take a party of their favorite Freddy's cast members on a pizza throwing, cupcake bombing, teeth-achingly saccharine adventure. Sure, why not? Some dark part of me can't help but wonder if Scott was inspired by Five Nights at Fuckboy's, a fan-made, profane RPG re-imagining of FNAF that marries the recognizable cast to RPG mechanics and lowbrow jokes. Is this a creator making a fan-work of a fan-work of his original work? The snake is eating its tail, the cycle is complete.
Posted: 31 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT When I was a kid in the ancient days of the early ‘90s I was part of a church youth group. Obviously this was before I morphed into a surly, foul-mouthed teen (and then an even more profane adult). Every year the youth group would participate in an extended weekend getaway at a camp up north along with a bunch of other churches. They’d hold this little summit way up in the sticks, far removed from anything remotely resembling civilization in the middle of January during the very depths of our Canadian winter. For reasons. Of course I went every year. Not only was it a great excuse to get an extra Friday and Monday out of school just after the Christmas break, it was always legitimately, innocently fun. It was a chance to blow off school, ditch the normal boring Sunday service, and find the most entertaining ways possible to critically injure ourselves in the woods. And in 1994 it would be even better than ever. Because that year, for whatever reason, they were holding a video game competition. This was it, I was going to be The Wizard.
New Grand Theft Auto V Online mode channels Manhunt Posted: 31 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT Eight more days 'til Hallo-ween, Hallo-ween Eight more days 'til Hallo-ween, Hallo-ween Ahem. Sorry. I watched Halloween 3: Season of the Witch last night and that jingle is stuck in my head. Also, what an odd movie. I like the idea of Halloween becoming an anthology series before Season of the Witch's failure brought about the return of Michael Myers, but I don't think doing it with your third iteration helps, nor does the name, which is so dang non-descript and seemingly unrelated to this weird sci-fi flick. At least the doc gets it in. Anyways! Grand Theft Auto V is kind of ancient history for me -- it's two years old already. But Rockstar is still doing Grand Theft Auto Online stuff and damn, the Halloween-inspired Slasher mode looks pretty great. One player runs around with a shotgun, the rest just have melee-capable flashlights that could just as easily give away their position as help them meander about. The flashlight crew needs to survive, the hunter needs to pump them full of led lest the tables be turned and one of the survivors get a gun, and everyone wears spooky Halloween masks.
Posted: 31 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT The elevator pitch for Sword Coast Legends was concocted in a cauldron specifically to make the Zack Furnisses of the world greedily salivate. "That 5th edition D&D that you love Dungon Mastering for your players?" n-Space asks, churning the pot with its over-sized ladle. "We're going to translate that into a digital format, so that you can keep your players with you even when their schedules don't allow. And you like old cRPG games, right? We're even going to throw in a single-player campaign to bring back those memories." And it does bring back those memories! Sword Coast Legends finds every way it can to make you wish to return to those older, better games.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III's Nuketown looks like the coolest one yet Posted: 31 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT Nuketown is a historical map in the Call of Duty franchise. It was first featured in Black Ops, then moved into Black Ops II, where it was also a zombie map, it was remade as "Nukehouse" in the ill-fated Declassified, and finally, it's reappearing in Black Ops III under the "l33t" moniker "NUK3TOWN." While the new name is pretty dumb the solid symmetrical design remains, and I really dig this super bright, digitized ReBoot-esque theme -- especially the working shuffleboard at 0:50. Call of Duty: Black Ops III launches next week.
Batman: Arkham Knight on PC will never be fully fixed Posted: 31 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT Early last year, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it would no longer attempt to squash the bugs that plagued Batman: Arkham Origins. In doing so, the publisher ensured that game would never fully be fixed. Today, it announced a similar fate for Batman: Arkham Knight. In the Arkham Knight news section on Steam, community administrator Yorick today posted that the company will offer refunds to anyone who purchased Batman: Arkham Knight on the PC, regardless of how long they've actually played it. Yorick admitted many players are still experiencing issues. While the developers plan to continue to try and fix the game, there are apparently problems with it they will be unable to do anything about.
The Silent Hill Retrospective: The Room Posted: 31 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT What makes the difference between houses and homes? Is it the space itself or the people inhabiting them? Is it down to the memories we create for ourselves or the aged familiarity of the spaces around us? And if a room is indifferent to our philosophies and the objects we put in them, then why does it seem so safe? For Silent Hill 4: The Room, the answers are found in the most voyeuristic of ways; holes in the walls, windows to the streets, and doors to adjacent hallways. Whole worlds are found not just in supernatural portals, but in the borders between everyday lives. Thematically, SH4: The Room is the ideal companion piece to Silent Hill 2, as both deal with the trappings of domestic nihilism on an intimate scale. But unfortunately, it’s best remembered as the black sheep of the series; a failed experiment that, while conceptually sound, was undone by its own rushed designs. But whatever you or I think of SH4: The Room, it needs, now more than ever, to be celebrated for its bewildering existentialism and uniqueness from the usual fare. By breaking away from the infamous town, we saw Silent Hill at its most perverse, most abstract, and most alienating.
| EA 'will evaluate any and all opportunities' with Nintendo going forward Posted: 31 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT Remember when EA came out on stage with a massive amount of support for Nintendo's Wii U at its first E3, and then basically ran off into the night in 2013 without so much as port support? A lot of third-parties have flocked from the Wii U actually (Ubisoft included), but evidently EA is looking at what Nintendo can bring to the table in the future. Regarding striking up a new relationship with Nintendo, EA CEO Andrew Wilson had this to say:
Though the source has named the NX as part of the conversation, it was never specifically mentioned by Wilson, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. Nintendo is in such a weird spot -- the 3DS is doing great, the Wii U is kind of there, and it has two completely new markets on the horizon. 2016 will be a very interesting year for them. | Assassin's Creed Syndicate has a Uplay reward actually worth getting Posted: 31 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT Uplay, Ubisoft's digital rights management service and scourge in the eyes of most gamers, had one cool concept once upon a time. When the program launched, it was supposed to reward players by unlocking things through gameplay. In essence, it was like Achievements that meant something. That never fully panned out. Sure, the system worked like it was supposed to, but the prizes weren't ever all that interesting -- an alternate costume here, an Xbox 360 background there. A lot of times, the rewards are just ways of making the game's grind slightly more bearable, like when Uplay would offer in-game currency. Assassin's Creed Syndicate has one reward that's actually very cool and worth your time. Five songs off the game's soundtrack are available to download to your PC. Syndicate's OST, composed by the fantastic Austin Wintory, is moving at times and memorable at all times. The tracks, just a fraction of the entire soundtrack, delightfully capture the spirit of the game's setting. Just listen to "Jokes Jokes Jokes" which is embedded above. Cashing in on these songs will cost you 30 Uplay points (I have 1,200 and am not sure how I accumulated that many). If you've owned or played Assassin's Creed Syndicate, go to Uplay on your PC -- err, recently re-branded "Ubisoft Club" -- and navigate down to the rewards section. From there, just opt to download the select tracks from the soundtrack. That initiates a download of an 18MB .zip file containing the five songs. You'll burn through them quick and then you'll want to hear more. Uplay will probably never have the full support of the gaming community. However, as long as the program is necessary to play Ubisoft titles, the rewards component could still do some neat things. It'd be great to see more like this soundtrack offer in the sense that it doesn't directly complement gameplay, but instead brings a wonderful part of Syndicate and puts the spotlight on it outside of the context of the game. Of course, it helps that the soundtrack kicks a lot of ass. |
$16 Killing Floor 2, Free Tribes, & Halloween sale in Weekend Deals Posted: 31 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT Skipping out on the Saturday night costume soirée? No problem, this weekend is filled with PC gaming sales galore on Halloween (and non-Halloween) themed titles. Probably the best in the business right now is GMG's "Face Your Fears" sale with discounts up to 90% off and a stacking 20% off code. About 250 titles are discounted including $6 Metro Redux Bundle, $16 Killing Floor 2, $3.60 Dead Island Franchise, and more. A tricky deal is available this weekend for Shadow Warrior, where the game is discounted already by 85% off on Steam Store. Snag an Alienware coupon which stacks another 75% off and you'll have the game for only $1.50. You might want to act fast as the Alienware supplied code is limited in quantity. If that's still too rich for your blood, how about seven free games? The Tribes Universe games are free from Hi-Rez Studios this weekend. Titles include Earthsiege, Earthsiege 2, Starseige: Tribes, Tribes 2, Tribes: Aerial Assault, Tribes Vengeance, and Tribes Ascend. Can't go wrong with free.
Mewtwo gets a new form in Pokken Tournament Posted: 31 Oct 2015 04:15 AM PDT Watching livestreams of video games is something I've never been able to get into, but perhaps it's time I start trying to learn how to enjoy them. Last night during a Japanese stream of Pokkén Tournament, Mewtwo was unveiled as a fighter in the upcoming Bandai Namco game. With crystals bulging from his body, this form of Mewtwo is unlike any we've seen before.
| If you're having trouble with Destiny's first King's Fall jumping puzzle, consult these GIFs Posted: 31 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT To this day I run into people who have issues with the King's Fall jumping puzzle in Destiny's newest raid. It's never a problem having to wait (or if they go to orbit), as you only need a certain amount of players to finish it, but people can get frustrated, which isn't good. Thankfully, an intrepid Destiny player over on reddit created a cool looking 8-bit GIF (at variable speeds) to help people learn the pattern. Give it a look below and have it burned into your memory. Additionally, someone else has crafted a 3D image of the maze before Golgoroth, in case you feel like doing the pressure plate puzzle. Check that out in the gallery. | Bowser Jr. and his dead father join the ranks of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Posted: 31 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT The most recent trailer for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash introduces both Bowser Jr. and Dry Bowser to the court. Neither character is new to the Mario Tennis series, although Junior is now bringing the Koopa Clown Car along to help him out. It's still a bit weird seeing Bowser Jr. playing tennis with the skeleton of his father, but I guess it's nice that they can still spend time together even though his dad is undead. You know, it's actually a little heartwarming, in a messed up kind of way. I hope we see more Mario enemies joining the roster, those are always my favorite characters to choose. I'm rooting for Shy Guy to make a return, or for Blooper to make his tennis debut. |
