Nintendo somehow finds a way to make Animal Crossing even more adorable

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Millions of people love puppies. Millions of people also love Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. What happens when you put those two things together? Like chocolate and peanut butter, you get something spectacular!

Here's to hoping this trailer is just the first in a line of puppy-themed videos from Nintendo. Perhaps next it can stack three labradoodles on top of one another for a Tri Force Heroes trailer or even make a video featuring an array of puppies ripping the cast of The Cat Mario Show to shreds!

Dreams looks like the next great creation game

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT

I didn't get a good look at Dreams, the upcoming creation-centric adventure from LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway maker Media Molecule, during Sony's Paris Games Week conference. I was too preoccupied with the other gaming news rushing in. That's typically how things go.

But now that I've had sufficient time to dig into the latest video, read up, and figure out what this thing is all about, my curiosity has only heightened. My mind is racing with ideas.

Media Molecule envisions Dreams as a "space in which to create your own dreams, whether they're games, art, films, music, or anything in-between and beyond."

Zero Escape 3 gets new name and release shenanigans

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 01:30 PM PDT

The third entry in the Zero Escape franchise was announced earlier this year at the Anime Expo. Today, we learned a little more about the 3DS and Vita game.

In North America, it will be known as Zero Time Dilemma, and feature Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland struggling to choose between her boo and Nelly what I can only assume will be another twisted tale of lies, deceit, and death. Not to build up too much hype, but Aksys Games says series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi has "pulled out all the stops to deliver the most compelling and mind-shredding gaming experience ever seen on a handheld platform."

Whoa, guys! Try not to undersell this.

If you're a fan of physical copies and you’re European, prepare to be slightly disappointed. Aksys has announced the game will be a digital-only release in the Europe. Players in the US get the option of physical or digital, probably as a reward for beating Hitler all those years ago. Pending any delays, Zero Time Dilemma will release in the summer of 2016, giving you plenty of time to play through the first two amazing games if you haven't already.

Video game ghost stories #2: The faces

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Link made his way out of the clock tower, still in Deku Scrub form thanks to the Skull Kid. He just needed to find a way to return to his regular body. The Happy Mask salesman apparently knows the secret.

Wandering around Clock Town, Link felt that he was being watched. Looking up, he saw a very peculiar man dressed in green, floating through the air with the help of a large balloon. He seemed particularly interested in Link, and descended to speak with him.

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth is out now on Steam, have a trailer!

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 12:30 PM PDT

Afterbirth, the expansion to The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, was released earlier today on Steam. Just in time for Halloween! There's also a creepy release trailer to go along with it, featuring a disturbingly realistic vision of the Womb, complete with bloody, flesh-like walls.

The expansion requires the base game to play, and will run you $10.99 (or $19.98 for the Rebirth + Afterbirth bundle, if you don't already own the main game). Get ready for more weapon combos, new bosses, new room layouts, 120 new items, daily runs, and more. I can't wait to sink about a hundred more hours running around Isaac's creepy basement!

Also, in case you're wondering where all your progress went after installing Afterbirth, just look for the button on the main menu to import save data, and voila!

A Fallout 4 Pip-Boy edition unboxing video that shows how the Pip-Boy works

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Without a doubt, the most sought-after version of Fallout 4 is the Pip-Boy edition -- the one that comes with a functional Pip-Boy (requiring an alley-oop from your phone). Those who secured a pre-order for this version can count themselves among the lucky, as these things went fast.

Less than two weeks from release, we have an unboxing video to show those people what's in store and to make everyone else a little bit sad. YouTuber ChampChong has an early look at the device, complete with everything that comes in the box including game disc and inserts.

But the star of the show is that giant piece for your wrist. Bulky and unwieldy should be expected from a Pip-Boy, and it seems to deliver that in spades. The official app hasn't been released yet, so there's no footage of it working completely properly. But, there's some sort of placeholder screen that still makes the Pip-Boy look like a Pip-Boy. That should either hold you over or make the wait all that more unbearable. Sorry if it's the latter.

Twitch users will attempt to install Linux together

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 11:30 AM PDT

Twitch stumbled its way through the Pokémon series. Slowly but surely, it conquered Dark Souls. But can strangers work together over the internet to install Linux? With enough time, probably!

The stream starts tomorrow at 1:00pm Pacific. Every ten seconds, the most popular keystroke will be pulled from the channel's chat room and entered into an Arch Linux virtual machine.

Eventually, long after most of us have lost interest, the nonsense will give rise to progress. After reaching certain milestones -- the first successful boot; writing a "Hello World!" script in Python -- the stream organizer will raffle off prizes. First they install Linux, then they take over the world.

If I can tear myself away from Twitch's four-hundred-episode marathon of The Joy of Painting, I'll have to peek in on this mad experiment.

Sony's PS4 media remote is a gigantic monolith of a device

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT

I try not use too many remotes in my household. It's already bad enough having so many different controllers lying around, and having to juggle multiple devices beyond that gets pretty annoying. It's why I try to control most of my capable electronics with my smartphone.

If you're into clickers the new PS4 universal media remote is now available for $30, but note that it still has a little ways to go.

Jason terrorizes more Mortal Kombat X players today

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Like a mall Santa without any other prospects, Jason Voorhees lives for one time of year. (Or maybe he's dead? I don't know.) Regardless, Halloween is kind of Jason's bread and butter because then he can show up, scare some people, and go back to hibernating in space or in Hell or at the bottom of the lake or whatever. Easy paycheck.

Dutifully, Jason shows up right before the spooky holiday, this time in Mortal Kombat X for mobile devices. He does all that machete murder Fatality stuff that he does on PC and consoles, but on your phone or tablet instead. At least this seems a little more fair, as Scorpion is probably better trained in the fighting arts than some sexed-up teen.

Warner Bros. says that Mr. Voorhees can be added to the roster through the Jason Challenge or through the Jason Multiplayer Season. But, you should try walking up to him, looking him in the eyeholes, giving him a firm handshake, and telling him that you'd be honored if he joined your team. If he hacks you to death, that means he likes you.

Ratchet & Clank has some great aesthetics, channels its inner Star Fox

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT

As a part of the on-going Paris Games festivities, Insomniac put out a nice little gameplay video for the upcoming Ratchet & Clank game. The tropical setting really pops on PS4, and everything generally looks great. Nothing too revelatory, but good to see nonetheless.

There's also a flying section where Ratchet is prompted to "Do a barrel roll!" He does, but not before blasting away at a Hydroharvester. Business first, fun later.

I had a chance to play Ratchet & Clank last month at Tokyo Game Show. It felt fine, and this video corroborates that it's coming along nicely. Now, if only the same could be said about the Ratchet & Clank movie.

Fallout 4, video game as it is, will have a menu screen. Enthralling stuff. We have an image of what that looks like. But, some people hate spoilers, and they're probably mad that I even confirmed there's a menu screen. Damn, I better protect my neck.

Channel your inner 2007 and HIT THE JUMP for a spoiler-free version of that menu screen:

Lab Zero to launch Indivisible PS4 demo on Nov. 3

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT

Today, Lab Zero Games and 505 Games announced a PS4 version of their Indivisible prototype, to be released on November 3 for all PlayStation Network users. If you have a computer and want to play the prototype right away, it's currently available on the Indivisible website for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

The team at Lab Zero is attempting to raise funds through Indiegogo to begin full development on Indivisible. Although 505 Games has agreed to publish the game and provide $2 million if the necessary crowd funding comes through, they still need $1.5 million to make it a reality. As of writing, the campaign is approximately $1 million away from hitting its goal.

Lab Zero Games was founded by members of the original Skullgirls team after they were laid off from Reverge Labs. If they reach their funding goal, Indivisible will be their first original game.

Halo boss: Cortana 'not really nude,' appears without clothes to 'attract and demand attention'

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

343 Industries makes Halo now and so 343 Industries needs a way to explain Halo's Cortana with respect to its own design, intent, and ambitions. Accordingly, Halo franchise director Frank O’Connor offered GamesRadar a new canon for why Cortana is naked (though not one for why she has been more and more busty, with wider hips, with each passing installment).

Turns out, she's not naked, you fucking pervert! You just think she's naked because she's not wearing clothes and you're a big ol' horndog wrassling with your wild dick like Steve Irwin atop a croc, you sick fuck.

"She's not really nude … but that's what it makes you think of," O'Connor said. "So one of the reasons she [chooses to appear without clothes] is to attract and demand attention. And she does it to put people off so that they're on their guard when talking to her and she has the upper hand in those conversations.

It's kind of almost like the opposite of that nightmare you have where you go to school in the nude. You're terrified and embarrassed and she's kind of projecting that back out to her audience and winning intellectual points as a result."

EA shoots (first) for 13M Star Wars Battlefront sales

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT

Electronic Arts isn't trying to be Greedo greedy, just ambitious when it says that it expects Star Wars Battlefront to move 13 million copies. Maybe realistic, too. The Star Wars maelstrom of fandom is at a fever pitch between this game and the upcoming film. #Synergy on-point, everyone.

As reported by IGN, EA upped its Battlefront estimates from 10 million to 13 million in an investors' call yesterday. "We feel very good about 13 million units," COO Peter Moore said. The beta was played by 9 million people, but that's a free product. That statistic indicates some degree of interest, but doesn't necessarily fully translate to willingness to buy.

EA's original prediction of 10 million was based on the history of the other two Battlefront titles. They each sold about 9 million units. The publisher shifted that a bit for the collective Star Wars hype (and then shifted it a bit further).

For perspective's sake, 13 million is a ton of copies. Like, that's Call of Duty-big. Last year, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare had sold 11.4 million through its first month, and that was with the added benefit of 5 million of the sales coming from legacy platforms. Granted, Advanced Warfare was the lowest performance the series had seen in a while.

Star Wars Battlefront will need a launch similar to Call of Duty if it's going to hit its projections. If it succeeds, it could very well be the best-selling game of the year. Star Wars is coming for your throne, Call of Duty. And, as Steven and I learned in Tokyo last month, you come at the king, you best not miss.

The history of Call of Duty

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 07:15 AM PDT

With Black Ops III only a week out, we got to thinking about the series at large.

The first installment I played was Call of Duty 2, but the first one I loved was Modern Warfare. I'm hardly alone. Over the past decade, much has changed for the franchise. The founders of Infinity Ward are no longer with the company. New studios have entered the picture. The storylines now look to the future instead of at our past. Hell, there are even zombies.

Halo devs will 'talk about' split-screen co-op for the next game

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT

Halo 5: Guardians dropped split-screen cooperative play, a series staple, in favor of maintaining a smooth frame rate. The game does support online co-op, but it's just not the same. We've grown so accustomed to going through these campaigns with our buddies in the same room.

Speaking to GamesRadar, franchise director Frank O'Connor admitted the resulting feedback from fans has been "huge," but "realistically, for Halo 5, it's not something we can just throw in a patch."

"Split-screen is fun for me too," he said. "It's not something that I object to, and we would've loved to put it in. We'll talk about it for the next game, and we'll talk about it for the future."

Friday Night Fights - Fright Night Edition

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT

Welcome to another spooktacular edition of Friday Night Fights! Hollowiener is upon us, and I'm excited to take my kiddos trick or treatin' and see some slutty costumes on moms. I had to miss Halloween last year due to surgery, so I'm really happy to be going this year. Plus I get to be Batman and my son is Robin. My daughter is an asshole (I know you're reading this) and refuses to be Catwoman, Harley or Poison Ivy. "I want to be a creamsicle." This is why I tell people you're adopted. Smh. What 13 year old wants to be a popsicle?

Moving on from crushing disappointment in my child, what spooky games are y'all playing? Playing any of them together? WELL YOU FUCKING SHOULD BECAUSE IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Seriously, let's play some games together.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 scores English subs

So, if you're open to importing the seaside sports game, Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 will be available in Japan and across Asia starting February 25, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

Review: Human Resource Machine

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Tomorrow Corporation, the studio behind World of Goo and Little Inferno, is one of my favorite indie developers of the last couple of years. Known for creating polished indie games with accessible mechanics and interesting, dark stories, I was incredibly excited to see more of the same from their newest game, Human Resource Machine.

Machine is not what I've come to expect from this talented developer, however. That's not in and of itself a bad thing, but many of the aspects I most loved about the studios past games have become some of my biggest criticisms of this new release.

Get in the Halloween spirit with Rare's 'Nightrare' video

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT

Halloween is nearly upon us, and Rare has chosen to share its "Nightrare," video, featuring a few of its famous mascots. It was made by a small team for Rare's 2015 Creative Jam, and it's merely a trailer, so don't have high expectations -- though, it does feature a maniacal chainsaw-wielding Banjo.

Haha, it kind of reminds me of an Are You Afraid of the Dark episode.

Here's what Shenmue III looks like so far after three months

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Shenmue III is chugging along, despite the many comments by the developers that they never got enough money to make the "true vision." Regardless, it seems like the project is going well so far, as they've provided a recent update on their Kickstarter page regarding map design and posted a few combat pictures.

Some of the objects in the screens provided (like the one above) are using placeholder assets, but this is still an in-game testing build. What this basically means is that testing can begin, and the team is beyond just creating assets for the game.

Prepare to wait a while for this one, in case you forgot -- it's set for an estimated date of December 2017 on PC and PS4.

If a Small Soldiers situation ever happened, this massive Zero would be terrifying

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT

Small Soldiers, also known as the evil PG-13 inverse of Toy Story, might have had a mixed public reception, but it also spawned a pretty badass PlayStation game. It also haunted the dreams of many kids, which is exactly what this gigantic Zero figurine may do if it ever becomes sentient.

Crafted by X-Plus Toys, this thing is 18 inches, and will run you 10,200 Yen (roughly $84 US). Amiami is currently taking pre-orders. Most of you are probably aware of my Mega Man collection, but I make it a rule to not pick up big items like this, so I'm probably passing.

Mighty No. 9 gets a new site, still a long ways away

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT

A new website has popped up for Mighty No. 9, delivering all of the previous information in one place. This includes a look at all eight Robot Masters Mighty Numbers Roll Call, Dr. Light Dr. William White, Mega Man's Beck's transformations, and Zero Ray.

It also details all of the features Mighty will ship with, including 12 stages, hard, hyper, and maniac difficulty settings, a score attack mode, the ability to play as Ray, leaderboards, a challenge mode, swappable regular and retro music, a boss rush gametype, 2-player online race battle support, and two player online challenge co-op.

Despite all this hubbub and one of the worst-handled campaigns ever, I hope this is good come February.

Rise of the Tomb Raider launch trailer features an original song by Karen O

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 01:30 AM PDT

Rise of the Tomb Raider is just a couple weeks from launch (for the Xbox One at least), so naturally we can expect a launch trailer to keep the hype train rolling. This one comes with an extra tidbit of news, past the new bits of story revealed. Karen O, frontwoman for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, has produced an original song for Rise of the Tomb Raider titled "I Shall Rise."

It has an almost James Bond quality to it, where I can picture naked silhouettes swimming around while listening. Not only is "I Shall Rise" featured in this trailer, it is also a part of the game's soundtrack, appearing somewhere along Lara's journey.

Karen O's previous major contribution to video games was having one of the most fun low-level Rock Band songs to play on drums.

You can buy actual Fallout Nuka Cola at Target next month

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Well, it looks like Bethesda is pulling out all the stops for Fallout 4 next month. In addition to the $120 sold out special edition and the numerous other promotional items (including beer), you'll be able to pick up Nuka Cola at Target when the game launches on November 10.

This seems to be a rebranding of Jones Soda in the form of "Nuka Cola Quantum," and Target does have an exclusivity deal on the item. It doesn't look like it has any "bonus XP" nonsense -- it's just a fun little promo.

I don't drink soda very often but I may pick one up to have for company.
