One of WiiWare's best games is now on mobile Posted: 29 Oct 2015 03:15 PM PDT WiiWare may not be fondly remembered by many, but for many years Nintendo's digital platform was one of my favorite places to discover hidden gems. In fact, some of my favorite games from the last generation (Lost Winds, Bit.Trip, and Let's Catch, just to name a few) got their start on WiiWare. Many of these titles have been forgotten to the annals of time, while others have seen release on other (more successful) platforms. WayForward's Lit is the latest title to make the transition to a new home, with a reimagined spin on the concept launching today on iOS and Android devices. Lit follows teenager Jake through a maze of light-based puzzles in a darkened nightmarish high school, were he attempts to rescue his girlfriend Rachel. The mobile version has a more simplistic cartoony art-style and trades in the IR-heavy motion controls for touch-based inputs. The core idea behind the game remains the same, though, tasking players with breaking windows with a slingshot and moving lightbulbs from one lamp to another in order to stay out of the deadly shadows. It's available now for free (with advertisements) via the App Store and Google Play.
| Gearbox is still updating Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel Posted: 29 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT Fresh updates for Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection rolled out today across PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and even PS Vita. Those 3x better legendary loot drop rates enabled back in May via hotfix are now permanent, for starters. There are also balance changes, bug fixes, and performance improvements across the board. On PS4 and Xbox One specifically, The Handsome Collection has gained a field-of-view slider (under Video Options), and the latter version's multiplayer connectivity has been touched up. If you'd like to see specifics, follow the link below for platform-specific patch notes. Once there, scroll down past the hotfixes to the "updates" section (or search for "October 29, 2015"). | Posted: 29 Oct 2015 01:30 PM PDT It's been over four years since XSEED delivered the first half of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, and now the (hopefully) epic conclusion has finally arrived on PlayStation Network and Steam. The role-playing game is available for $30 on both platforms, while its predecessor is currently on sale for $10. If you haven't played that yet, you definitely should start there. It's pretty amazing. |
Video game ghost stories #1: Man eater Posted: 29 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT Journal Entry #1: We recruited a new member to our party today, but they're a little... strange. We found them hanging out in a swamp eating frogs. At first, I thought it was an enemy, as their appearance startled me, but they seemed eager to join our team and we need all the help we can get. Let's hope for the best!
Paradox picks up White Wolf Publishing from CCP Posted: 29 Oct 2015 12:30 PM PDT White Wolf Publishing has found a new home under Paradox Interactive. The company, known for role-playing games like Vampire: The Masquerade, had been with EVE Online maker CCP Games since 2006. For years, CCP was working on adapting World of Darkness into a massively multiplayer online game, but development on the project ceased last year. White Wolf was sold in an all-cash deal and will be run as an "independent entity with a dedicated team" lead by Tobias Sjögren, the former VP of business development at Paradox. "If it makes sense [Paradox] might publish some [White Wolf] stuff," said VP of acquisition Shams Jorjani. "But our business will stay the same publishing great strategy, management, and RPG games." For now, while we're still waiting to hear more specifics, this seems like positive news. More opportunities for these properties, certainly. "We have great respect for White Wolf's gaming worlds and see big opportunities for their expansion in the future under our new subsidiary," said Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester. I'm sure fans have special requests. Let's start with this: Paradox Interactive Acquires White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games [Paradox]
Marathon gamers are 25% more likely to consider sleeping with a serial killer Posted: 29 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT Do you ever find yourself playing video games for more than eight hours straight? If you answered yes, would you consider sleeping with -- or fucking -- a serial killer? According to OKCupid, 25 percent of you are likely to answer yes. OKCupid is basing this spooky factoid off an analysis of the thousands of questions users answer to find like-minded lovers. I've been on the site for years (having met my boyfriend there) and it is fascinating how honest some people are with their answers when marking them publicly visible.
You've got to go to McDonald's to catch the latest Pokemon Posted: 29 Oct 2015 11:30 AM PDT The Pokémon Company announced early this month it'd be handing out Level 50 Mythical Hoopa, though the North American distributor (it's GAME in the UK) hadn't been decided yet. The legendary pocket monster is coming to Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, and Y owners who stop in at a McDonald's hamburger shop between November 27 and December 23. You don't have to buy anything, just bring your 3DS and the game to claim your gift. I imagine that Hoopa-led Pokémon movie will be coming out soon, too.
Microsoft man: 'Halo is to games' what 'Star Wars is to movies' Posted: 29 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT Microsoft must be pretty happy that for the second year in a row it has more big exclusives in its holiday lineup (what with Uncharted 4 delayed and the paid timed exclusivity for Rise of the Tomb Raider) than nearest competitor Sony. The Xbox One shrugged off sluggish sales with a decent holiday 2014 and could do the same again, especially with the just-released, T-for-Teen rated Halo 5. But come on. Speaking to GameSpot, global marketing boss Aaron Greenberg talks up Halo 5 as, "the most anticipated game of the year," because apparently Metal Gear Solid V didn't come out this year and Fallout 4 is being pushed to 2016. Ok. But "man working at company says company's biggest game is good" is par for the course. Sure, a little hyperbole, but-- "What's really so special about Halo, and people will feel it the moment they start playing the campaign, is just the richness of the universe and the story and it's very much like what Star Wars is to movies, Halo is to games. You have that special sauce--it's unlike anything else."
Never mind, Sony is still making first-party Vita games Posted: 29 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT No one seems to know quite what is happening with the Vita right now. Last week, Sony Computer Entertainment executive vice president Masayasu Ito stated that Sony wasn't working on any first-party titles for the Vita. In an interview released today on VG247, SCE Europe president Jim Ryan said quite the opposite. According to Ryan, what Ito said about the Vita's first-party future was misunderstood. "I think what was said was that we’re no longer in the business of triple-A development of games for Vita. But there is still first-party Vita content being worked upon." While this is good news for the Vita, promises of first-party development alone aren't going to help keep the ailing system on life support. Ryan neglected to mention exactly what Sony-developed games we can expect in the handheld's future, but hopefully there will be some good titles in the bunch. I need something to use my Vita for besides Remote Play and Persona games. PS4, VR and why Sony must "break the mould" for the good of the games industry [VG247 via Polygon]
Halo chief would 'love' a Halo without shooting Posted: 29 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT I think we can all agree Halo 5 is great, even if the gameplay gets in the way of the story, but I still can't help but imagine a game in the series without all that pesky shooting weighing it down. Luckily, it seems Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor is right there with me on this one, recently telling Time "methods of gameplay that aren’t simply shooting interest [him]." How exciting! "I’d love to go do a xenoarcheological expedition to the original Halo ring," O'Connor added. "You know, take some scientists down, drive around, catch samples, do some detective work, maybe there’s a mystery. And it wouldn’t require shooting. It’s the universe and environment that can still be exciting, even without action. So that’s one of the things I’d love to see us invest more in." Sounds like a wonderful idea, Frank. I'm already chomping at the bit to pre-order at GameStop®. Halo‘s Frank O’Connor reacts to criticism of Halo 5 [Time]
| Mirror's Edge Catalyst pushed back to May 2016 Posted: 29 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT Mirror's Edge Catalyst, the long-awaited reboot/sequel/whatever to 2008's Mirror's Edge is almost upon us. We've been sitting idly, hoping to play as Faith again for seven years. The wait just got a little bit longer. Catalyst was originally scheduled to release on February 23, 2016. According to a blog post on MirrorsEdge.com posted today, it is being pushed back three months to release on May 24. Producer Sara Jansson lists nebulous reasons for the delay: shooting for "the highest quality possible" and making sure that when a player "step[s] into the massive City of Glass and experience the rise of Faith, it’s as entertaining, impressive, and memorable as it can be." Lack of specifics aside, that's fair enough. The wait for a followup to Mirror's Edge has been long, but better for it to take just a bit longer and be polished than to release early in a state of jank. | Review: Alienware Steam Machine Posted: 29 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT PC gaming is in the midst of a cultural shift. No, not necessarily the "Steam Machine" revolution, which Valve is trying to heavily push, but a movement away from the tether of a dedicated platform into the living room. In a way, it's a celebration of all of those wonderful LAN parties some of us had as kids (or still have, in spite of the heavy push for online play). It's also an emerging market, as multiple platform publishers are attempting to hone in on the console crowd. Right now though, it's very, very early. |
| SEGA sez: New Sonic to be 'inspired by how it played in its heyday' Posted: 29 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT Earlier this year, SEGA issued a bold apology. The company apologized for accidentally naming its Halloween character "Boob" instead of "Boo." Even earlier in the year, SEGA made another apology for how shit Sonic games have been recently and that company has "partially betrayed" fans. Sega Games CEO Haruki Satomi offered the following statement to Destructoid: "Seeing our fans across the world respond to our recent interview with Famitsu, lets us know we've made the right first step in acknowledging who we are and where we want to be. Sega is dedicated to bringing you quality gaming experiences and becoming a brand you love and trust again." Continuing that that vein, a recent comment by SEGA Europe Marketing Director Jon Rooke, noted by GoNintendo, points to future Sonic going back to the series' roots. "Sega has publicly apologised to the fans as the quality of console games in the Sonic franchise hasn’t been acceptable over recent years. It’s been tough translating that iconic side scrolling 2D experience from the 90s into 3D but Sonic is still huge for us so the new games will be more inspired by how it played in its heyday." And yet, that official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account just spews memes irreverently, instead of offering kids advice about sexual harassment and cigarette smoking. "Over the next few years, we want to use engaging content and marketing to remind the public why they fell in love with Sega in the first place." Oh. | Dawn of War II: Retribution just got some weird new DLC Posted: 29 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT Today's reminder that Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III would be a lovely thing to exist comes in the form of a peculiar DLC release for 2011's Dawn of War II: Retribution. Out now on Steam, the Ridiculously Bloody Blood Pack adds a toggle for dramatic new blood effects in the real-time strategy game. It's the kind of thing that would be a fun little bonus, but it costs $1.99. |
Microsoft keeps insisting Kinect is the bee's knees, cuts price by $50 Posted: 29 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT Once upon a time, many moon ago, Microsoft was adamant that Kinect was an integral part of the Xbox One. Then, when Xbox One didn't sell all that well, partially because of the $100 markup necessitated by the Kinect, the Xbox One was perfectly capable of functioning without the camera peripheral. Crazy how that works, eh? Microsoft's still beating that drum, albeit significantly quieter. Major Nelson writes today that Kinect owners routinely report the highest level of customer satisfaction, as if they found religion or marital bliss. Also, Microsoft says that it still has great things in the pipeline for Kinect that it's constantly working on. Let's take a quick break to look at some of the must-have games that wouldn't be possible without Kinect:
Steam's Halloween Sale is full of spooks and savings Posted: 29 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT Halloween can quickly turn into an expensive holiday. Fake graves for the yard, sexy costumes, and peeled grapes aren't going to buy themselves. But, if you've budgeted irresponsibly, Steam's here to bail you out again. Just underway, Steam has a Halloween sale going on through November 2. There are a lot of games with the word "zombie" in the title, as you'd expect. Some look good, others not so much, but it's the reason for the season. Not everything's spooky, though. Grand Theft Auto V at 33 percent off is the fixture at the top of the list. Nothing's scary about that game unless you get freaked out by the sheer amount of money it has made. Steam Halloween Sale [Steam]
Looks like Outlast II will have a religious theme Posted: 29 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT After the critical and commercial success of Outlast, it's only natural Red Barrels would want to continue down that path with a sequel. The first teaser for Outlast II debuted today, and its religious subject matter already seems more intriguing than the nightmarish asylum of the first game.
Evolve has a new monster and a new version of the game Posted: 29 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT It seems like not many hunters are still trying to take down the monsters of Evolve. It came and went in February, and not many peeps have been made since then. Developer Turtle Rock Studios is still trying to breathe life into the game, and the Gorgon is its latest effort. In this grindhouse-style trailer for the Gorgon, we get a look at a new monster coming next week on November 3. It's a scary spider lady thing. As Turtle Rock describes her "She's one bad bitch." With the video, we get confirmation of this month's earlier report that Evolve would get a new edition of the game. Evolve: Ultimate Edition also releases on November 3, and it looks to be a standard "Game of the Year" type offering (although very few people would heap that accolade on Evolve). Gorgon comes in the package, as do nine other characters, likely including only prior content. You'll usually get the most bang for your buck by waiting for the inevitable collection of content. Patience is key. But, in the case of Evolve, that might not be the case. An excited base of people around launch is more enticing than stalling for another hunter to play as. After that buzz has died, it's not nearly as fun to jump into. That just might be what some people unfortunately realize about Evolve: Ultimate Edition.
Twitch ditches gaming-only, launches Twitch Creative Posted: 29 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT Twitch has been strict in the past about its content being gaming-only, locking out streamers using PlayStation 4 title The Playroom to create non-video-game-related television shows. With the recent beta of Twitch Music and today's announcement of Twitch Creative, the streaming juggernaut is relaxing those standards a bit. Currently, users can view streamers drawing, sculpting, and otherwise crafting art on the newly official channel. To kick it all off, Twitch secured the rights to the entire archive of Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting (403 episodes!), and is broadcasting it marathon-style starting today and running through November 6. I will probably spend more time watching a Twitch stream in the next week than I have all year. Gimme those happy trees!
First gameplay for NieR: Automata emerges Posted: 29 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT If you happened to attend Paris Games Week, you might have been able to catch a quick look at NieR: Automata, the newest entry in the series developed by Platinum Games. For the millions of you who didn't though, here's a video that shows off the gameplay at work. The action looks sufficiently fast-paced, with an insanely quick running speed and aerial combos. The original NieR did a lot of things right, but I think Platinum is going to bring a lot to the table here from a gameplay perspective.
Those wacky Street Fighter IV Halloween costumes are out Posted: 29 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT Over a week ago, Capcom unveiled some new costumes for Street Fighter IV (yep, the one that's out already), and unlike some of the other pallet swap DLC it has released in the past, these are actually pretty cool. As of now you can go grab them on Steam, PS3, PS4, and Xbox 360 for $19.99, for the complete pack, or purchase piecemeal packs for $3.99. At this point I'm only dabbling in SFIV, and I'm mostly waiting for the new iteration. The little bit I played at TGS and during the previous two beta sessions has me excited, and I think I'm going to enjoy it a lot more.
Nintendo Download: Human Resource Machine Posted: 29 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT It's a relatively low tide for the eShop platform this time around. On the Wii U you'll find Human Resource Machine, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, PictoParty, and Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town. I haven't tried the Wii U port yet, but I'm happy to see that Octodad finally made it over. The 3DS platform is light this week, with a demo for Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. I feel like this demo was created for the sole purpose of having something to show for the 3DS. With support for download play, getting access to Tri Force Heroes shouldn't be terribly difficult.
Sonic games are being removed from the Wii Virtual Console Posted: 29 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT The digital revolution has its conveniences. For instance, I tend to jump into FPS games randomly, playing a few rounds before moving on to the next one. Being able to do this instantly is great, and I don't necessarily need to own the disc for a lot of these games. But the digital era has an ugly side of course, most notably the fact that you don't really own your media -- so I do curb my purchases a bit. This seems to be the case with Sonic the Hedgehog games on the Wii Virtual Console, as they will be removed on October 30 from the eShop (not your console). This is affecting Japan as we speak, but it seems like it may be a global issue as well. If you still want your Sonic fix you can look to basically every other platform, including the 3DS eShop, which has enhanced Sonic games. Famitsu [Twitter via Nintendo Life]
Review: Overlord: Fellowship of Evil Posted: 29 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT Shit. That would be my review of Overlord: Fellowship of Evil if one word reviews were passable, but since that isn't the case I guess I'll give you all a few paragraphs describing shit. Are you one of the few people who remember the Overlord series with fondness? Then stop reading now and forget this game ever existed, you'll be better off having never played it.
Titanfall on MY phone? It's more likely than you think Posted: 29 Oct 2015 02:30 AM PDT Titanfall might not have made as big of a splash as it wanted, with its Call of Duty-but-with-mechs gameplay, but it has its following. Those who just can't get enough of the "expansive sci-fi universe" of Titanfall at home might be in luck; developer Respawn Entertainment is teaming up with Nexon to bring the franchise to mobile and tablet devices. The two studios are co-funding a new developer Particle City, which is sort of a sub-developer to Respawn, founded in part by Respawn's Vince Zampella and sharing office space in Los Angeles. Particle City is currently hiring to work on the mobile Titanfall games. No genre or format has been announced for the upcoming Titanfall mobile title(s), but Zampella extols the partnership with Nexon, citing the publisher's "free-to-play expertise" as a strong point. Titan Clicker, here we come!
| Digital Foundry on Arkham Knight PC: 'No improvements from interim patch in September' Posted: 29 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT Well, this is awkward. Although Batman: Arkham Knight has returned to Steam, all is not well with the game even after multiple patches, and a giant interim patch last month. In fact, investigating further, Eurogamer's Digital Foundry notes that it's essentially the same build from the interim state. The reality is actually worse:
This whole situation is rather crazy in regards to how the publisher has responded to fans. Within a week and a half of release, Ubisoft removed the Season Pass from the marketplace for Assassin's Creed Unity, and made the Dead Kings DLC free for everyone on all platforms, including PC. Additionally, they gave Season Pass holders access to two full Ubisoft games (including Far Cry 4) and the first episode of Assassin's Creed Chronicles. Owners of Arkham Knight on PC got...a challenge room pack that will debut in 2016, and past games in the series, six months after release in December. And the game is still broken. |
Nintendo notes that amiibo sales aren't stopping, Animal Crossing Cards are selling gangbusters Posted: 29 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT Over 20 million amiibo have been shipped worldwide in this past year. Despite the manufacturing issues and poor communication, Nintendo has done well for itself. The margins are likely far more lucrative for the Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer cards though, as 8.6 million individual cards have been sold to date -- keep in mind that the game just launched at the end of July in Japan, and only in the past month in the west. Take a look at the charts in the gallery below for the full rundown on the amiibo situation right now. To recap a bit, the US market still accounts for the vast majority of sales with 56% of all product sold (the next highest is Europe with 23%); Link, Mario, and Pikachu are still the top three sellers in the US; and in Japan, the Animal Crossing Cards are on top. The next amiibo-centric happenings include the launch of the Mii Fighter 3-pack, Mega Yoshi, and the Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival eShop game. Corporate Management Policy Briefing [Nintendo]
Sony's Yoshida doesn't know if it will ever be possible to change your PSN ID Posted: 29 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT PSN recently sent out an invite-only questionnaire that invited players to feedback on their most requested features. On that list was the option to change your PSN ID. Well, according to a recent Q&A with PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida, it turns out that changing PSN ID might not even be possible.
Want to play ten 'unrestricted' hours of Need for Speed before it's out? Posted: 28 Oct 2015 11:20 PM PDT If you're a member of EA Access, you can now sample ten hours of Need for Speed, completely unrestricted, for free. You'll be able to try out every mode and feature in advance of release next week, and the clock only counts down while you're in-game -- so you won't be locked out ten hours after you download it.
Update: Arkham Knight Steam reviews are being tagged 'Pre Release' Posted: 28 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT [Update: Since the story was posted, the pre release tag has begun to be removed from these reviews]. Boy, Arkham Knight really is the gift that keeps on giving. Yesterday Batman: Arkham Knight finally returned to Steam after a four-month delay and, as well as still being stupidly buggy, there's some dodgy things going on with reviews of the game. People who purchased Arkham Knight on launch day four months ago that were unhappy with the product they purchased and left a review on Steam have now had their Steam reviews tagged as "Pre Release" reviews. No, those are not pre-release reviews. Those are reviews of a product that was released, charged for at full price and advertised as a finished retail product.
