Nintendo's first mobile app is Miitomo

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 03:15 PM PDT

Nintendo is finally entering the mobile space with DeNA. Its first app to come out of the collaboration, Miitomo, is a Mii-centric free-to-play title about communicating with others.

Miitomo was originally scheduled to launch this year, but Nintendo felt it needed to push back the release to March 2016. CEO Tatsumi Kimishima told investors at a briefing today in Tokyo that the company is caught up promoting other impending games, and with more lead time after the holiday season, it can properly explain and market the mobile app.

It's being pitched as a "friendly conversation starter." You are the main character, so to speak, and you'll be asked questions which Miitomo will then relay to your friends' Mii. The idea is to help people discover commonalities and build "unexpected relationships."

Looking further out, Nintendo and DeNA plan to release four more mobile games by March 2017. That's presumably when we'll start to see its iconic characters on smartphones and tablets.

Curiously, Kimishima also mentioned there are unannounced games headed to Wii U and 3DS by the end of this holiday season. Twilight Princess HD, perhaps?

Making sense of Atlas Reactor's simultaneous turn-based combat

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Atlas Reactor is a tactical multiplayer game about predicting your opponents' moves.

The twist is that although combat is turn-based, everyone's "turns" play out simultaneously (albeit across distinct phases: prep, dash, blast, and move). It's tough to convey how the system works in practice unless you have visual examples. Even then, it can be hazy.

This latest video sets up several what-if scenarios to help get the point across.

The Art of Fallout 4 is so bright you gotta wear shades

Bethesda is offering a sneak peek at The Art of Fallout 4, a massive 386-page art book now available for pre-sale at the Bethesda store for a cool $50 and an estimated shipping date of December 22. Not exactly cheap, but after taking a look at the preview images, I think I'm sold.

League of Legends' Kindred sports a killer kit and beautiful design

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT

It's getting to the point where I'm starting to get lost when selecting a Champion in League of Legends. Sure, the newest kid on the block, Kindred, has a giant floating mask for an icon and the list is in alphabetical order, but with 127 characters in all, there's room for confusion.

Every so often though I find a new favorite and always seem to recall their spot on the list. Kindred is one of those favorites.

No, there are still no backward compatibility PS4 plans

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is a pretty affable cat, but who knows he could speak French, too? He's a triple threat!

Asked at Paris Games Week if the PlayStation 4 would ever see backward compatibility, Yoshida answered, completely in French.

Boh! The Hitman vacations* (*does murder) in fake Italy

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Il Sicario (known in the states as "The Hitman") is the star of the upcoming game Hitman, which has been pushed from a December release into March 2016. Also April, May, and June, as Hitman will launch as an incomplete game and trickle the rest of its content out in subsequent months.

From Paris Games Week is a new location for The Hitman to go and do hits in, Sapienza, a fake town in southern Italy, and definitely not the real town where my hitman mother and family are from. We are good citizens here in the Americas and don't kill anyone, please don't look into it, thanks.

Review: Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT

Perched atop some large edifice in Assassin's Creed Syndicate's London, I hesitated. Many slickly-presented columns of light reached toward the sky in all directions -- each one indicating yet another thing to do in an effort to satisfy the game's calling for you to do everything. I was frozen less from indecision and more from just simply being overwhelmed. There's so much to do. So much.

The sprawl of this year's Assassin's Creed is greater than ever. Syndicate's London is reported to be 30 percent larger than Unity's Paris. Ubisoft used that extra real estate to cram in as much additional content as possible. Disingenuous maybe, but it's to the developer's credit that this patchwork quilt of stuff to do doesn't show its seams nearly as often as one would expect.

For the first time in several Assassin's Creed installments, it feels as there's mostly an overarching goal to work toward. The majority of the game deals with the idea of changing things to make a better London, and that's reflected both in the story missions and a lot of the side content. Regardless of what endeavor you choose to embark on, chances are that it'll make baby steps toward that goal. Many baby steps later and progress can be seen.

$20 Hardline and Dragon Age: Inquisition in Origin Halloween sale

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT

Well, if you have all the time in the world to play large RPGs this winter, Dragon Age: Inquisition is now at a new low price on Origin (the PC physical DVD version was $20 a few months ago). That is, if a certain other RPG isn't getting in your way early November...

This week, Origin is running a Halloween "Zomboss Invasion Sale" where Inquisition, along with other EA-published titles such as Battlefield Hardline and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, hit new low prices. While I'm not a big PvZ fan, you really can't argue against a $5 price point.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada brings out the Orks

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

I'm starting to run out of intelligible things to say about Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, but even if I did have fresh insights, I'd be too preoccupied by these screenshots to share them.

Good lord is this game pretty.

Today, it's finally the Orks' turn, and their cobbled-together ships are represented especially well here in Unreal Engine 4. I have to wonder how demanding this game will be on PCs.

Koei Tecmo is localizing Gust's dark new RPG

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT

Yoru No Nai Kuni is coming to western shores as Nights of Azure, Koei Tecmo announced today.

Directed by Keisuke Kikuchi (Fatal Frame, Deception IV), the new role-playing game represents something of a departure for developer Gust, the studio most known for its cheery Atelier series.

The story follows two young women, Arnice and Lilysse, who set out to liberate their kingdom from the demons that keep people locked in their homes at night. But the quest won't be as simple as defeating their enemies in battle, they discover, as their loyalties are tested by impossible decisions.

Nights of the Azure will be available in North America on March 29, 2016 and in Europe starting April 1. However, it seems Koei Tecmo only intends to publish the PlayStation 4 version in the West, despite the game's availability on PS3 and PS Vita in Japan, where it launched earlier this month.

Batman: Arkham Knight is back on Steam

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Warner Bros. has begun selling the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight again after pulling it from the Steam store in June due to widespread performance issues and bugs. It's currently $49.99.

As an apology, the publisher is offering the prior games in the series (Arkham Asylum GOTY, Arkham City GOTY, Arkham Origins, and Arkham Origins Blackgate) to "everyone who has already purchased or will purchase Batman: Arkham Knight for PC prior to 11:59pm PDT, November 16, 2015." If you're qualified, expect to find those titles in your library by December.

Other gifts for qualified players include the upcoming Community Challenge Pack DLC and Team Fortress 2 cosmetic items created by the Arkham community.

Looking over the user reviews on Steam, it sounds as if the PC port is indeed better than before but still not up to standards for some players, performance-wise. Interestingly, old reviews are now marked as "pre-release."

November's Games with Gold lineup disappoints

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT

I'm not sure what I was expecting from this lineup. Too much? Microsoft has come out with the list of games that Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download for free next month:

Xbox One

  • Pneuma: Breath of Life (November 1 - 30)
  • Knight Squad (November 16 - December 15)

Xbox 360

  • DiRT 3 (November 1 - November 15)
  • Dungeon Siege III (November 16 - November 30)

For what it's worth, Brett enjoyed Knight Squad at PAX South, describing it as "a dose of Bomberman, a dash of Gauntlet, and a whole heaping of trash-talking your friends."

Special note: the Xbox 360 offerings, DiRT 3 and Dungeon Siege III, will be playable on Xbox One after the New Xbox One Experience update lands on November 12. And better yet, going forward, all Xbox 360 titles in Games with Gold will be backward compatible. Lovely.

The Last Door Season 2 hits Steam Early Access

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT

The first season of point-and-click horror game The Last Door was an utterly chilling exploration of the intersection between Catholic guilt and Lovecraftian mythology. I loved it, and if you're looking for a title to cuddle up to this Halloween, you'd do well to check out the game on Steam.

Although it ended on something of a cliffhanger, the lack of resolution was partially mitigated by the knowledge that a second season was on the horizon. Said follow-up has just hit Steam Early Access, with the premiere episodes available to play right now. If you purchase that version for the introductory price of $7.99, it'll get you all four episodes as they're released.

This is more than a season pass for an episodic game, however. It's an Early Access release, with all that moniker entails. On the Steam page, development team The Game Kitchen outlines the state of the game and its plans for the non-final release. "Not all achievements and other Steam extras have been added, and final passes on the text and gameplay are also still being conducted. While we don't plan to make any major changes, feedback and suggestions for tweaking gameplay and fixing bugs, typos, and so forth are always welcome, and will be taken into consideration for all 4 episodes of Season 2."

Much like Season One's "Collector's Edition," the final game will retail for $9.99 and contain bonus features, such as exclusive playable scenes and improved visuals. If you buy the Early Access version, you'll eventually get access to that content as it is released. The episodes that comprise the season will be available to purchase directly from the developers, but you'll miss out on the exclusive content. The first episode of the previous season is currently available to play for free, if you're interested.

Low gravity and cubic ball are mutators headed to Rocket League in a free update

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT

Rocket League fans will probably want to just skip ahead and watch the video below. It gives brief mention to the additions Psyonix is making to the car soccer game next month. It goes by pretty quickly, so I took the time to write out the full list below the video. You're welcome.

Most of the mutators are self-explanatory, with a lot of focus on the ball's attributes. There are a couple that make a bright orange question mark appear above my head, like Pinball and Time Warp. Psyonix might shed light on those during its first look tomorrow at 2 PM Pacific on the Rocket League Twitch channel.

After the update next month that adds these mutators, there's another update planned for December that changes the soccer field to a hockey arena, switching out the ball for a puck. The best part of all this? Both updates are going to be free.

Review: Assault Android Cactus

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Every once in a while a game slips past my grasp due to any number of assignments that I have to tackle at a time. One such title is Assault Android Cactus, which I really enjoyed during its Early Access incarnation, and happened to launch just recently on Steam.

I regret not jumping into the final version immediately, as it's one of the best twin-stick shooters in a long while.

Game Center CX level coming to Super Mario Maker in all regions

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT

When November 4 hits, you'll probably want to boot up your copy of Super Mario Maker. In addition to checkpoints, a new power-up creation tool, and a Course World overhaul, it looks like we're getting a new premium level.

It's created by Arino from Game Center CX, and will be available for all regions, not just Japan. Previously, Arino debuted in Super Mario Maker as a playable character in the east. This is a rather unexpected development, but I'll take it!

This Metal Gear Solid cosplay of Raiden is as real as it gets

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Famed cosplayer Masazi visited TGS recently with a really badass Raiden costume, but it was tough to get a good look at it. Now you can see the entire outfit in video form, hosted and directed by the Rescue the Princess YouTube channel.

The attention to detail is insane, as the mask actually opens up on multiple levels. Hats off to Masazi for one of her best costumes yet.

Watch Xenoblade Chronicles 3D run at the clock speed of an original 3DS

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT

When Xenoblade Chronicles 3D arrived earlier this year, exclusively for the New 3DS, fans were skeptical as to whether or not it would have just ran on older hardware. YouTube user Osha has given the experiment a go, using homebrew software to slow down the clock speed of his New 3DS to that of the previous model. As you can clearly see, the game runs, but it's much slower and clunkier.

It's also important to note that the New 3DS has a number of different hardware enhancements, not just an increase in clock speed (it also has more RAM and VRAM), so the better hardware is inherently beefing this up beyond the capabilities of a normal 3DS.

With those caveats in place, it's still interesting to note that the game runs in an incredibly sluggish fashion, which should put to bed the rumor that Xenoblade was merely ported to the New 3DS for the sole purpose of selling devices -- and not out of necessity.

Uncharted 4 is 'shooting for' eight multiplayer maps, all of which are new

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT

Hey, in case you forgot, multiplayer in Uncharted is a thing.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is going to continue the tradition that started with the second iteration, and it appears as if they aren't relying on nostalgia this time. Lead multiplayer designer Robert Cogburn recently noted that every map is going to be new, and that they are "shooting for" eight arenas. Vehicles are coming after launch, which could spawn the creation of newer, bigger maps. New features include sidekicks (AI characters), Mysticals (magic powers, basically), and a grappling hook mechanic.

If you want to get in on the action, Sony is hosting a multiplayer beta on December 4.

A sequel to AeternoBlade is in the works for the 3DS and Vita

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT

AeternoBlade may have had issues, but I found it to be a fun little action game for the 3DS eShop when it was released last year. Thankfully, developer Corecell Technology has announced that a sequel is in the works, which will see the return of Freyja, the heroine from the first game, as well as a new character -- Bernard.

Gameplay seems to be following a similar Metroidvania baseline, with the added ability of a new time manipulating mechanic. It will drop sometime in the second quarter of 2016, with the 3DS as the core platform, followed by a Vita release (just like the first game).

Don't worry, Nintendo Directs are still a thing, one coming this year

Posted: 28 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Last we heard, Nintendo Directs were going to continue despite the loss of Satoru Iwata, and now we have a bit more info to go on.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has once again re-iterated that they are going to continue to happen, and that the next one is slated for 2015, before the end of the year. Kimishima notes that there will be "at least" one this year, as a matter of fact.

While fans have been clamoring for Directs for weeks now, Nintendo is understandably getting its bearings back after suffering such a great loss.

A lot of people are playing Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer has sold over two million copies since its release in Japan on July 30, 2015.

Yes, really. 2.02M, to be precise -- even though North America and Europe didn't get the spin-off title until late last month.

In comparison, Splatoon has "only" sold 2.42M since May.

Ponder on that for a minute. Over 2 million people. That's the equivalent of the entire population of Bahrain buying Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer.

Twice.

This guy solos Crota's End...on a Rock Band drum-kit

While Crota's End never quite duplicated the challenge of Destiny's very first raid, The Vault of Glass, those of us familiar enough with the second raid know all too well that it's the end that's the tricky bit.

But then this guy comes along and solos it not just on the hardest difficulty, but also using a Rock Band drum-kit and wtf I don't even. Marvel at this:

Quake Live drops free-to-play model, and players aren't happy

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Quake Arena, the once free-to-play game based on the massively popular Quake 3 Arena, has had one of its biggest updates since launch. As of the newest update, the game is now a one-time purchase of $10, and all in-game stats players have built up over the past five years have been reset.

The full update has been detailed on the Steam Community: listen server support, Steamworks integration, Steam Workshop for custom maps and game modes, and a whole load of bug fixes and tweaks are included in the patch. For some people, this update is a welcome change to the game and is being seen as a return to the simplicity of Quake III.

However, others are angry at the decision to wipe all in-game statistics. There are reports that friends lists, preferred servers, and clans have been cleared, and most worryingly that active subscriptions to the game have been removed with no word of any sort of refund.

While breaking up clans and friends that have potentially been together for years is bad enough, it stops being a problem of just not liking change when people who have paid for a service are locked out of it.

We have contacted id for a statement on this, and will update the story should we get one.

Sniffing pug butts given an accessible controller for disabled gamers

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Butt Sniffin Pugs is a game about exactly what you’d expect: walk around a park, sniff pug butts, get new abilities, sniff more pug butts. While that does sound wonderful, there are other people on this site who have more expertise in butts than me. It’s the controller I want to talk about.

You roll a big ol’ tennis ball around to move, and then slap on a plushy dog’s arse to take a whiff. The entire thing looks like something MacGyver would make to detonate a bomb in a pet shop, but developer Gabe Telepak says he wants to adapt it to work for a wider variety of games to help allow players with disabilities to play.

Talking to Kotaku at IndieCade, Telepak said:

At first [Butt Sniffin Pugs] was kind of this fun thing, but now we’re trying to use it to talk about accessibility. Like, ‘Hey, we can make our games more accessible. It’s not that hard.’ Instead of letting the controller die as a one-time thing, we want to use it for that cause.

While it’s essentially a big-ass trackball, the Butt Sniffin Pugs controller could be incredibly helpful for people who don’t have the fine motor skills needed to use a traditional controller. One of the pros of this controller is that it doesn’t seem like it would be particularly cost-prohibitive for players, as opposed to some of the accessible hardware that’s out there.

Telepak is working with IndieBox and AbleGamers to make a slightly less janky version of the controller that, unfortunately, also has a removable dog butt. I kind of think that should be absolutely compulsory for all controllers ever.

There’s no specific release date for Butt Sniffin Pugs other than “in 2016” for PS4 and PC, and “later” for iPad. The controller is still in the prototyping stages, so don’t expect to see that quite yet either.

There is also a Kickstarter for the game coming some time this month, but what with there only being three days left of it I'm not quite sure when.
