Battlefield 4 updated with 30 pages of patch notes in tow

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Remember Battlefield 4? You know, the militaristic shooter with the disastrous launch over two years ago? DICE has been busy updating the game and adding new maps, but this is the first time the patch notes have only been released in a PDF, and for good reason: they are 30 pages long.

You read that right, thirty fucking pages. I didn't realize video game patches came with reading homework these days.

Just from skimming the lengthy patch notes, it looks like basically everything imaginable was tweaked in some way, from guns to vehicles to gametypes, and the update also adds the Operation Outbreak map that was created alongside community feedback. So if you're a Battlefield 4 player, look out for the fresh coat of paint the next time you launch the game.

It turns out that Destiny's raid challenges are time-gated

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 03:21 PM PDT

While Destiny is still missing a lot of features, and the loot system is never quite right, Bungie has a ton of variables to account for since it's so massive. Most notably, a millions-strong community that will datamine the living shit out of the game, and even go so far as to mathematically map out every single facet of the experience and post their findings on reddit. The community is dedicated, to say the least.

Likely as a result of these actions, Bungie has taken to time-gating a lot of high-end content as of this expansion. Most notably many Exotics have been gated behind daily missions, which only pop up once (for a full day) every one or two weeks or so. So far it hasn't been a massive hassle, even if it's a lazier way of introducing lengthy questlines.

It seems as if Bungie is using this strategy for the raids, too. Some time ago Destiny producer Luke Smith spoke to "challenge modes" for the raid, gifting players with special loot if they met certain requirements on specific fights (presumably Warpriest, Golgoroth, Daughters, and Oryx). Players have been rapidly searching for any hint as to these challenges, along with the last three Calcified Fragments, to no avail.

As it turns out, they're time-gated, as confirmed by Smith today. The challenges are "not active yet," and more info will come in "several weeks." The remaining three fragments are a part of that event. If I had to guess, the 320 Artifact is gated behind those last fragments. As of right now it is physically impossible to max out your character until someone locates that Artifact.

I'm happy enough sitting at 315 as of today on my Warlock.

Nintendo of America's localization of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes added memes

I've been playing and enjoying The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes a great deal on my 3DS, but some people are up in arms over Nintendo of America's localization of the game.

You really do need to save Kaz in three days

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Early on in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, you're sent on your way to find and rescue a familiar face, Kazuhira Miller, who is being held prisoner in Afghanistan. You're told he's vital to your quest for revenge, and that he has at most three days left to live.

I should've known that wasn't an understatement. What a tragic cutscene.

Fair use for video games expanded in the US

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 01:15 PM PDT

Today, the United States Librarian of Congress defined more of what can be considered fair use across various forms of media and devices, including video games.

The Librarian clarified that players are allowed to modify their copy of a game to circumvent server-based authentication in certain situations where the original servers have been shut down. Museums, libraries, and other archives are even allowed to jailbreak consoles if needed to get games working again.

The new exemptions are only for games that can't be played at all if a server is shut down, meaning these exemptions don't apply if just the online multiplayer portion isn't available but the rest of the game is still playable.

We're in week two of PSN's Sale of the Dead

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT

PlayStation Network's Sale of the Dead continues with more deals on horror games.

This week, there's a whole lot of Resident Evil and not much else. It's a good time to play the HD remake, so I'm probably going to do that tonight. Still need to rewatch Hellraiser, at some point, but otherwise I think I've gotten through just about everything I wanted to this month.

First impressions for Blizzard's impressive inaugural FPS, Overwatch

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT

You could say I've been a long-time Blizzard fan. I was right there in 1992 with The Lost Vikings, the company's second game, all the way through the SNES era into Warcraft and Diablo. Over the years I've generally played every one of its titles, even if I don't view them in the same light.

Overwatch is Blizzard's first foray into the FPS world, and if the beta is any indication, it's on the right track.

Just some folks getting decapitated with a baseball bat in Fallout 4

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT

Just in time for the World Series' start tonight, Bethesda's put out a short clip for those wondering what bats do to heads instead of baseballs. It's not pretty. That's what you can look forward to if you (incorrectly) favor melee over small guns.

America's pastime has adopted the moniker, but Bethesda's hoping that Fallout 4's the real Fall Classic this year.

John Carpenter didn't sue Hideo Kojima because 'he's a nice guy'

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT

John Carpenter (Ghosts of Mars; Gorgon, the Space Monster) recently talked to Hollywood Reporter about his successful plagiarism suit against French director Luc Besson (Léon: The Professional) whose recent film Lockout rips off Carpenter's classic Escape From New York

"Look, CanalPlus is the company that, with me, owns Escape From New York. They came to me and said, 'Luc Besson ripped you off on Lockout.' Or Lockdown, whatever the hell that was. And they sent me the movie, and yes, he did. It’s the same story. (Laughs) I mean, you can’t do that, can you? You have to change a couple things. He’s after the president’s daughter? Come on. So I took him to French court."

Carpenter's side won an €80,000 settlement (CanalPlus sought €3 million), €20,000 of which went to Carpenter.

"[CanalPlus] wanted to also go after the video game Metal Gear Solid, which is kind of a rip-off of Escape From New York, too," Carpenter said, "but I told them not to do that. I know the director of those games, and he’s a nice guy, or at least he’s nice to me."

John! John! Kojima's free now, work on a game with him!

Hideo Kojima's infatuation with Hollywood is long-documented. Snake in Metal Gear is named for Escape From New York's Snake Plissken and looks like Terminator's Kyle Reese. Metal Gear Solid's Snake would end up looking more like Kurt Russell and even briefly goes by Plissken in Sons of Liberty. Also Metal Gear's Big Boss is just Sean Connery.

If Tales from the Borderlands characters were Vault Hunters in Borderlands 3

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT

Tales From the Borderlands (Season One?) wrapped up last week, and it was fantastic. One of the coolest things about Telltale's effort is how it will have an indelible impact on the main series. Once Borderlands 3 comes around, Pandora and its denizens will bear the scars wrought by Tales.

It's likely we'll see some of the Tales characters show up in the next mainline Borderlands game. Heck, it's not unreasonable to expect some might even be playable, considering how the season ends. I wonder what that would be like...

(As it discusses who didn't die, this post contains spoilers for Tales from the Borderlands. Read on at your own discretion.)

Nice sarlacc pit you got there, Star Wars Battlefront

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT

The Star Wars Battlefront beta gave rise to funny moments with Luke and Darth Vader, but I need to see more. More gifs, more videos. All of it.

Today's trailer from Paris Games Week shows other heroes and villains in action, including Leia, Han, Boba Fett, and Palpatine. A certain sarlacc even makes an appearance.

They're meant to look cool, though, so we'll need to wait until the full game releases in a few weeks before we can see these notable characters at their funniest. The design team has described the Emperor as "very mobile," and I'd very much like to see him run amok.

Alien: Isolation gets a Game of the Year edition, but it's named correctly

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Xenomorphs are resilient little buggers. One year removed from the release of Alien: Isolation, we thought we had done away with the titular alien. Nope. It comes back to haunt us today because a flamethrower isn't hint enough that we don't want it around.

Sega just put out Alien: Isolation - The Collection on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It's just what it says it is -- a collection of everything for the game up until this point. It's like a Game of the Year edition without the aggrandizing title. Well done, Sega.

More specifically, The Collection features the Ripley DLC, and the additional maps that were released to flesh out the Survivor and Salvage modes. It retails for $40 on Xbox One and PS4, while the regular version of the game runs $30 (but, you can likely find it cheaper somewhere). Alien: Isolation - The Collection costs $60 on Steam, but it's discounted by 50 percent today, meaning that it's only $30. Picking this up will deal a slight blow to your wallet, but a major one to your nerves.

Fallout 4's Trophies revealed, for lovers and fighters

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT

If you want to gobble up all of Fallout 4's Trophies, you're going to have to really get around the Wasteland. There's a lot to do, a lot to see, and a lot to kill because you're a Masshole. That explains why you (again) put a live grenade in someone's pocket while you were stealing their bottlecaps.

Two of Fallout 4's biggest changes are reflected in the Trophies, too. "Community Organizer" and "Benevolent Leader" deal with allying with settlements and keeping the people happy. Also, "Lovable" is earned for reaching the maximum relationship level with a companion.

Interestingly enough, there are no Trophies this time for maintaining certain karma levels. That means you can play however you want and not worry about replaying just to clean those up. Although, it is always fun to see how interactions change when you take a different approach.

Let's stop pretending Halo 5's gameplay matters

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Halo 5: Guardians is a video game much like any other; some parts of it are real good, others not so much.

Take the story, for example, this part of Halo 5 is pretty nice. There's a reason why we gave the game a good number in our review; if you dig cinematic action, like the stuff from Hollywood movies that video game blogs cover nowadays, it's going to be a fun ride.

Of course, between the gorgeous wonderful amazing cutscenes, you have to suffer through some lackluster gameplay.

Quantic Dream's android Kara comes alive in PS4 exclusive Detroit

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:44 AM PDT

The robot learns the world fucking sucks. Emotions!

David Cage has finally figured out what happens to his android, Kara, who started life as a short story/tech demo years ago. And it turns out she's in Detroit! Sorry, lady. But a fun play on the motor city once so prized for its vehicle manufacturing, now just sad about its sports teams and public officials cutting off water to residents.

PS4 exclusive Wild looks like symbiotic Animorphs

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:40 AM PDT

We finally got to see some gameplay from PS4 exclusive Wild today at Paris Games Week and my goodness, it has some awesome Animorphs vibes.

The idea behind Wild seems to be that as a shaman, you can enter a trance and control animals in the world around you by inhabiting them. Eagles can see really well, rabbits are small useless fluff balls and ravens can fly in to mess stuff up.

The game is certainly looking interesting. Want to see it for yourself? There's five minutes or so of gameplay you can watch right now.

Tekken 7 will use PlayStation VR

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:33 AM PDT

When I slid out of bed this morning and started prepping for Sony's press conference at Paris Games Week, I didn't imagine the event would be home to so much Tekken stuff.

First, there was a cute bit in which series producer Katsuhiro Harada was revealed as the next Street Fighter V character. There was a mock-up and everything. This segued into Bandai Namco's announcement that Tekken 7 is coming to PlayStation 4. Expected, but fine.

We're now nearing (what I assume to be) the tail end of the conference and there's yet another piece of Tekken news which really should have been mentioned earlier. "200 developers are working on PlayStation VR," according to Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, and Harada-san is among them. Tekken 7 will be playable with the virtual-reality headset. Huh.

Sony announces Gran Turismo Sport for PS4

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:26 AM PDT

Today at its Paris Games Week press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment revealed the next entry in its long-running simulation racing series, Gran Turismo Sport.

It will be compatible with PlayStation VR and aims to be "the most realistic driving simulator of all Gran Turismo games to date." No word on a release window, but a beta is planned for early 2016.

Crytek shows off its VR dinosaur game Robinson at Paris Games Week

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:20 AM PDT

There was but a whisper of Robinson: The Journey back in June, and now developer Crytek has shown off a bit more of it during the virtual reality portion of Sony's Paris Games Week press conference.

The trailer features not only the boy protagonist we've seen before, but a Wheatley-esque floating ball eye thing directing him safely through the dinosaur stampede. Strangely, the duo is moving against it, toward whatever the animals are running from. That doesn't seem smart.

That Until Dawn virtual reality DLC is real

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:15 AM PDT

This news is a little bit old because we reported it last week, but now it's confirmed. Super scary horror game Until Dawn is getting an add-on, and that DLC will be playable on PlayStation VR.

The expansion is called Rush of Blood, and it's the first virtual reality content for an already-released major title. It's a ways off in the distance because PlayStation VR won't release until next year, but it's coming nonetheless. Should be a nice little push for both the peripheral and the game.

Here's the newest trailer for PlayStation VR's RIGS Mechanized Combat League

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:07 AM PDT

As one of the eight games for the PlayStation VR, Sony have unveiled the latest trailer for RIGS Mechanized Combat League.

RIGS  is a weird mix of sports game and mech FPS, set in 2065. It's got the over the top sports commentators, the roaring crowds, and more than a hint of Super Monday Night Combat to it that I can't help but love.

RIGS will be an exclusive for the PlayStation VR when the device launches. You can take a look at the trailer up top.

Horizon Zero Dawn is still lookin' great

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:03 AM PDT

Horizon Zero Dawn. That's the name I can never seem to remember.

Guerrilla Games showed more footage of its action-RPG at Sony's Paris Games Week conference, and this has to be one of the better-looking upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusives. The premise: human tribes hunt gigantic mechanical creatures in the wilderness to gather a precious resource.

During the on-stage demo, the game seemed to freeze at a climactic moment, but it was a fake-out. "Crash? Oh no...we just opened up dev mode," said managing director Hermen Hulst. We then got a look at one of the machines, the Thunderjaw, up close. Karma is coming for you, Guerrilla.

LittleBigPlanet developer explains how its new PS4 game works

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:02 AM PDT

Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway) has shown how its interesting new game, Dreams, works with a live demo of the game in alpha state that included plenty of rat possession.

Every player creates a custom Imp who follows you in Dreams; this one Calcifer orange and French. You use the Imp, controlled with the DualShock 4 motion controls, to engage with the world almost like a computer mouse.

The Imp can also possess characters, vehicles, and inanimate objects. Each Dream can go from traditional platforming to sandbox to puzzles; the one on display was set wide-open so you can do anything, in this case plopping a bunch of trees around, then a small house. Going through the door led somewhere completely different, a large stone study. "Almost anything, like a well or a manhole cover" can be a gateway to another dream.

Unlike LittleBigPlanet, which separates "play and create," Dreams mashes them up, though you can lock your levels down more, too. Plus, giant macaroon dessert world! Looks pretty neat. There's a beta coming 2016, too.

Hey guys, it's that time you've all been waiting for, the first multiplayer trailer for Uncharted 4's multiplayer mode is now live.

The trailer is highly cinematic, which means we learn very little from watching it, but it certainly does feature Uncharted characters fighting each other.

We will update with more info on the multiplayer mode as it surfaces.

So, today at Sony's Paris Games Week media briefing, the company announced the first open beta for Battleborn, the next game from Duke Nukem: Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines developer Gearbox Software, will be taking place on PlayStation 4 sometime next year. Get hype!

PlayStation 4 enabling DJs with Avicii music rhythm game Vector

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 05:42 AM PDT

In 2015, 1 out of 3 humans are DJs. This has led to global gridlock as necessary goods and services plummet under insistence that, "you should come see my set." The population rate is in decline, too, as more men become DJs; while a small percentage will make enough money to woo suitors, it is an otherwise irredeemable life choice.

Avicii is a Swedish DJ, apparently one of the most popular in the world, whose real name is Tim Bergling, which is fun to say. He's teamed up with Hello There to make Vector, a rhythm game wherein you can design your own levels and play against others. It's coming 2016 exclusively to PlayStation 4.

Housemarque announces ruby shooter Matterfall

Posted: 27 Oct 2015 05:41 AM PDT

Housemarque is probably best known for its trippy 2D shooters Super Stardust or Resogun, but the studio is going in a different direction for its latest game Matterfall, announced today at Sony's press conference during Paris Games Week. The trailer showed a guy in a Crysis-lookin' suit, able to construct weapons on the fly.

He fights against some antagonistic red crystals that appear to be taking over the environment and its inhabitants. Then they turned into rock-hard tentacles and attacked him! I've seen enough anime to know where that was going. Good thing the trailer cut at that point.

No Man's Sky takes flight in June 2016

Sean Murray didn't lie. No Man's Sky didn't release today like some people thought it would. But, now we know when it will launch. That's June 2016. Mark your calendars.

Apart from that nugget of information, we got another good lookin' No Man's Sky trailer. I don't think this game is capable of making bad lookin' trailers. Hope that tides you over for eight months or so.
