Microsoft is overhauling Xbox One on Nov. 12 Posted: 26 Oct 2015 03:00 PM PDT Microsoft is preparing a major update for Xbox One that will overhaul the look and feel of the user interface and, crucially, add backward compatibility support for a growing list of Xbox 360 games. It's called the New Xbox One Experience, and it's launching November 12, 2015. The system update is currently being tested by members of the console's preview program. I'm not among them, but I've heard that certain apps are not working as intended, and had expected launch to happen toward the end of next month. Only a couple short weeks, now.
Noct has potential but there isn't much to it yet Posted: 26 Oct 2015 12:30 PM PDT Noct is a top-down survival game with a killer hook. Set in the ruins of earth after some kind of Pitch Black-like doomsday event, the action is viewed from a grainy thermal camera far removed from danger. You play the part of a survivor on the ground trying to eek out another day of life, raging against the oppressive shroud of darkness and giant bugs that have claimed the world, but you see it all from the impassive perspective of a listlessly drifting military drone. It's a visually striking style that multiplies the spook factor of the desolate wastes by an order of magnitude. Sadly, so far that perspective is about all Noct has going for it.
Halloween sale: $3 Left 4 Dead 2 and 200 other PC games to munch on Posted: 26 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT Costume parties and trick-or-treating may be all the rave, but it's also prime time for zombies and scary story gaming. In celebration of spooky time, Green Man Gaming is running a "Face Your Fears" PC gaming sale with titles up to 90% off instantly and a stacking 22% off coupon for additional savings. There are about 200 Halloween-themed PC games and DLC packs in the sale. Price points are what you'd expect during a Steam Summer/Winter sale, with the coupon making 54 titles at all new historic lows (in USD). You can check out a full list here, or see our top picks below.
You'll be able to pre-load Fallout 4 on all platforms Posted: 26 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT Because playing a game only counts if you do so at the exact moment it becomes possible to do so (November 10), you may be happy to learn that Fallout 4 will be available to pre-load on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Bethesda confirmed. That means you can download the game in advance of it going live on various storefronts (provided you've purchased in advance) and can play once its active without needing to do the 29GB download first. Because you'll have already done it. Computers are very complicated, no need to concern yourself with it too much. Take that, suckers whom are buying a disc of the game. Well, except PC suckers, whose Fallout 4 boxed copy still requires a Steam download anyways.
Burnout Paradise will be compatible with Xbox One Posted: 26 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT There was talk of Burnout Paradise coming to Xbox One, but it wasn't a sure thing. Now it is. On Twitter, Criterion confirmed that the open-world racing game will eventually be playable on the console via backward compatibility. Wider support for digital and disc-based Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One will come with the New Xbox Experience in November, but it's unclear if Paradise is going to be ready in time. The studio simply said to "stay tuned" for a release date. We've had a few occasions to talk about our favorite Burnout games lately. This one doesn't top my list, but I sure loved those multiplayer challenges. Wouldn't mind revisiting them soon.
Chun-Li graces Mad Catz' first Street Fighter V stick Posted: 26 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT Mad Catz' first Street Fighter V fight stick is up for pre-order. The Tournament Edition 2 FightStick works with PS4 and PS3, has "Sanwa joystick and buttons, the very same parts found in Japanese arcade cabinets," and will run you $230. For the aesthetically-minded, you can change the artwork -- here, featuring Chun-Li -- without fussing with any of the innards and wires. Maybe a tasteful Monet, or pigpoopbuttballs. It also works with, "all major fighting games," not just Street Fighter V, so I'm buying this to up my Bushido Blade game.
I wonder how irradiated this official Fallout 4 beer is Posted: 26 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT Fallout 4 is vying for the title of Most Marketed Thing of 2015, from plastering entire cities with ads to pre-order socks to sack-dresses to this partnership with Carlsberg for "Fallout Beer," currently available for pre-order on the superior Amazon UK wherein you can apparently purchase booze over the web. Please someone send me some Hermes Green Tea Liqueur, I cannot find it anywhere. This nuclear plumed Carlsberg is, "a light coloured pilsner lager, with a refreshing zesty hoppy taste and a floral aroma," and--what? Only 4%ABV? More like Carlsbad. Give me a Steel Reserve any day. I'll pay for the extra gravity.
The easy way to earn XP and mini medals in Dragon Quest Heroes Posted: 26 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT Dragon Quest Heroes made my weekend disappear. I had already invested enough time in finishing all of the side quests that I figured I might as well strive for full completion, but a few optional bosses stood in the way. They are absurdly difficult unless you're at a high level (my whole group was in the mid-80s or above) and have the right mix of equipment. Even then, it's a struggle. You're going to need grind. Thankfully, there are ways to quickly earn XP and the pain-in-the-ass rare currency, mini medals. For leveling, you will want the Magnetic Necklace (earned by finishing Maya's quests, the first of which is called The First Dance) to attract metal slimes. They're hard to hit and quick to run away, but offer loads of XP. The map "Arba Town - Hero" is your best bet for finding them.
Despite all the hubbub, I'm still getting Fatal Frame Posted: 26 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT Our own Zack Furniss had a pretty bad time with Fatal Frame V, as detailed in his excellent review. Having just finished the hour-and-a-half long free demo for the title myself, I completely understand where he's coming from, and I'm grateful for his forthright and earnest appraisal of his relationship with the game. That said, I'm buying it anyway. In fact, his anti-enthusiasm for the game has already helped me to enjoy it more. By setting my expectations low, Fatal Frame V is a lot less likely to disappoint. While the demo is definitely janky at times, it's continued to keep me curious and excited about what it may offer up next. Here are a few of the ways that the Fatal Frame V won me over. Beware of spooky spoilers from the game's demo.
Steampunk mini-golf game is free on Steam all day Posted: 26 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT High in the sky, above the clouds, there is a mini-golf course. That's what Vertiginous Golf would like you to think, anyway. And, up there, rounds are free forever if you click a few buttons right now. Steampunk mini-golf game Vertiginous Golf is free on Steam today. I didn't like it much when I reviewed it earlier this year. But, the beauty of free is that you can make those decisions for yourself at no cost except for some of your time. Vertiginous Golf [Steam]
Who wants a free copy of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns? Posted: 26 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT Yo, check this out. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns came out last Friday and I got ten codes for it. I bet that's more than you have. Lucky for you, I'm a super nice guy. Here's the deal: Arena.net gave codes to Amazon who gave codes to us who are going to give codes to you fine folks. That's a lot of dirty hands these have gone through. You should probably wash your hands frequently, especially since it's almost flu season and you might be dealing with a bunch of filthy codes. And, have you gotten your flu shot yet? Don't make me call you every day to check up. Just do it. I have important shit to do; I don't need to worry about keeping you alive. The breakdown here is a stockpile of five standard digital copies and five deluxe digital copies. They go for $50 and $75, respectively. Here are the Amazon links in case you'd rather not take your chances and go whole hog into the thorns right now (standard, digital). For everyone else, you show great patience. Good. That was the first part of the test. You passed. The second and final part is to leave a comment telling us what makes you thorny. If you don't want to do that, draw a picture of a Destructoid staffer in a thorny situation. Maybe Chris getting slapped by the Homecoming Queen and her bouquet of roses. You get the idea. Mike Martin's in charge of picking the winners. You have to impress him, not me. Flatter him. Bribe him. Send him a cheese platter. Put a severed horse's head in his bed (he likes that.) In a few days, he'll let you know if you're one of the chosen ten. May the force be with you, or whatever we're saying this week. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns (Standard, Digital) [Amazon]
Destiny expands microtransactions with surprise Halloween event Posted: 26 Oct 2015 05:45 AM PDT Bungie has pushed a new update to Destiny in the dead of morning that adds more microtransactions to the game. In addition to "Treasures of the Lost" chests for 200 Silver each, you can pick up the Legendary emotes "Zombie Dance" (700), "Monster Dance" (500), "and "Boo" (300). For reference, the lowest amount of silver you can buy is 500 for $4.99. Chests include random legendary cosmetic masks, and other random small cosmetic items like Jackolytes. I also found a Jackolyte pickup in the Hard Mode King's Fall raid. Thankfully there's also a free version of the event, where you can trick or treat around the Tower for menial items. You can also grab a quest from Eva Levante in the Tower (she sells emblems and shaders near The Speaker) to get a few of the items in the treasure boxes, but if you want more Legendary bags, you'll have to buy them.
No, No Man's Sky ain't coming out tomorrow Posted: 26 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT We could make a million articles about which games don't release this week. Fallout 4 does not release this week (but very soon, nonetheless). Persona 5 does not release this week. Half-Life 3 does not release this week. See? It's easy. Another one for the pile is No Man's Sky, although that rumor actually had to be debunked by the developer. Leading up to tomorrow's much-awaited press conference by Sony at Paris Games Week, people thought that suddenly launching No Man's Sky would be a part of the plans. Hello Games' Sean Murray says it's not true. "I heard that rumour that [No Man's Sky] is stealth releasing on Oct 27th. It is false," Murray tweeted. Sony has taken to strongly promoting No Man's Sky at its events, but an "And you can play it right now!" reveal still seems unlikely. But, wait -- if there was going to be a stealth-release, isn't that denial exactly what Murray would say? Argh, we've learned nothing. @NoMansSky [Twitter]
Posted: 26 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT Juan Ponce de León's hunt for the Fountain of Youth is a legend far more emblematic of many adventures than most depicted in media. The conquistador committed the lion's share of his days to exploring the New World, much of it allegedly in pursuit of eternal life, only to ironically wind up in an early grave. It was a fruitless venture, one fueled by myth, that ended in disappointment. Other wayfarers have been known to scale mountains and search corners of the globe not for fabled treasure, but self discovery. However, for every Henry David Thoreau that dredges up answers in the reflection of Walden Pond, there are countless others who never manage to find enlightenment in the wild, leaving perhaps with just anecdotes, or scars, memories of their hardships. The Legend of Legacy is the tale of seven pilgrims, each with motivations of their own for travelling to the mysterious isle of Avalon, and while they may find what they seek, the overarching journey is characterized by a dissatisfying emptiness, a promise unfulfilled.
| Miyamoto wanted GoldenEye 64 to be less violent, 'shake hands' with enemies Posted: 26 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT Years later and we're still talking about GoldenEye 64 -- that's just how iconic it is. Speaking at the GameCity Festival in Nottingham, ex-Rare employee Martin Hollis stated that originally, GoldenEye was going to be a much more violent game, with "beautifully rendered gore that would explode out." Evidently at some point during development he obtained a fax from Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto, who suggested that there was "too much close-up killing," and that "it would be nice, if at the end of the game, you got to shake hands with all your enemies in the hospital." You may laugh, but Hollis did have the utmost respect for Miyamoto, and still does, actually. He notes that he "studiously" tried to learn Nintendo's brand while developing GoldenEye, and was influenced by Mario 64 to make the locales more open-ended. Hollis also states that Miyamoto was trying to implement "user-centric design," which ultimately is a more player-friendly concept. If you remotely love GoldenEye you should read the rest of the piece from The Guardian, which has some really interesting tidbits. | CyberConnect2 is tapping into .hack for 'New World' Posted: 26 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT CyberConnect2 and Bandai Namco have teamed up for New World, an upcoming Android and iOS RPG. It's really going for a .hack feel through and through, which you can plainly see from this newest gameplay trailer. This first title is actually volume one (Maiden of Silver Tears), and the start of a long-lasting universe collaboration. The first title will launch before the end of the year in Japan as a free-to-play game -- no word on a localization. |
Learn the twisted backstory behind Sonic Adventure 2 Posted: 26 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT Sonic Adventure 2 is a pretty strange game. I remember playing it for the first time with my cousin, plugging away at multiplayer for 10 hours straight. For that reason, I've always had a soft spot for the Adventure sequel, even if it wasn't nearly as good. This video from DidYouKnowGaming sheds light on some of the lesser-known concepts in Adventure 2, including the "enhanced American influence," (beyond the obvious San Francisco levels), Pepsi Man references, the fact that Robotnik's cousin may have a fictional form of AIDS (and Shadow the Hedgehog was the result of a race for the cure), and even the story behind Sonic's shoes. Uh, I kind of want to play it again.
Review: Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide Posted: 26 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT Left 4 Dead is one of my favourite games. The summer of 2009 was spent staying up until five o’clock in the morning, playing the same campaigns with the same group of friends, and it was by far the most fun I’ve ever had with a game. Sadly, we haven’t (officially) heard a peep from Valve about any signs of a third iteration. So over the years, I’ve drifted from title to title, hoping to find something that would get me as hooked as those games did. Unfortunately, while many of them are great, the sea of co-op FPS games to come out since then haven’t ever managed to scratch that same itch that L4D did. Sure, I’ve had fun with the Paydays and the Killing Floors of the world, but nothing ever quite managed to be comparable. Be sure take that into consideration when I say this: Fatshark’s Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide is the Left 4 Dead 3 we never had, for better and for worse.
Please vote for 'appear offline' in Sony's new PS4 feature poll Posted: 26 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT A new poll has appeared in the wild for PS4 owners, hinting at what might be coming in update 4.0. Some features you can vote for include PS2 classics, "appear offline" mode, deleting items from your library, changing your PSN ID (why isn't this just...available?) and custom backgrounds. I have to admit, voting for PS2 classics is tempting, but I'm willing to bet that Sony would support it for a few months and then completely abandon it if it doesn't net a 1000% profit. As such, it's clearly safer to go for some of the smaller implementations like folders, or of course, my personal favorite, "appear offline," a feature Microsoft has provided for years along with the ability to change your Gamertag. Like for all of my call to arms posts, I'll take full credit if "appear offline" gets implemented, and you'll have my thanks. I'm definitely taking credit for pushing Darkwing Duck into a tie for first place with Mabel in the Disney Infinity poll! Sony Knows [NeoGAF]
If you haven't played Darksiders II yet, Deathinitive Edition is a good place to start Posted: 26 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT Darksiders II has become a sort of joke within our community by way of the hashtag #Darksiders2, fostered by our resident funny man, Occams. To this day our readers still use that tag to denote something particularly garish, like wearing a Jack Skellington shirt to an opera concert, for example. But to get real for a second, Darksiders II is a damn good action game, and something I'd consider required reading at this point for action fans. The Deathinitive Edition isn't necessarily that big of an upgrade, but it's a good way to introduce yourself to the franchise.
Because Star Wars Battlefront is Star Wars related, 9.5 million people played the beta Posted: 26 Oct 2015 12:01 AM PDT With all of the hype surrounding the new Star Wars film, it's no surprise that 9.5 million people downloaded the beta for EA's new Star Wars Battlefront. When the upcoming J.J. Abrams joint is crashing every ticketing system known to man with presales, you know it's real. EA noted that the nearly 10 million users come from the PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, and note that this is the biggest beta they've ever hosted. Hell, it may be one of the biggest beta periods of all time, though a lot of publishers remain guarded when it comes to numbers (for reference, Destiny hit 4.6 million in beta across two platforms). It makes you wonder why the Star Wars license was kept in limbo with various project cancellations for so long. The Biggest Beta in EA History [EA]
RollerCoaster Tycoon World is having its first beta this weekend Posted: 25 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT After the diabolical mess that was RollerCoaster Tycoon 4, the idea of a new, proper game in the series to follow it up is both exciting and utterly terrifying. RollerCoaster Tycoon World has been passed around three different studios, with Nvizzio Creations currently being at the helm. RollerCoaster Tycoon World could either be the mess most people are expecting it to be, or a semi-decent follow up to Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, and no one quite knows which way it will go. We will get a very rough idea this weekend though, when the game’s first closed beta begins. From October 30 to November 2, pre-purchasers will have the chance to try out the rollercoaster and park building portion of the game, with seemingly none of the actual money-making Tycoon strategy included. That in and of itself is worrying, as these sorts of games live or die based on how well the simulation is, and we won’t be seeing any of that side of the game just yet. Nvizzio claims it wants to spot-check different parts of the game, but the two sides seem so critically linked to me that they probably shouldn't be tested separately. We'll know about that side of the game by the end of November, when the game's second beta test is planned for. You can read about what exactly is available on the official website. One thing to remain positive about is that Nvizzio Creations is allowing players to share videos and screenshots of the beta. That’s hopefully a sign it's confident enough that the game is worth people playing at this stage. At the very least, pre-purchasers can spend three days building rollercoaster death machines or better yet, Mr. Bones’ Wild Ride. So that’s something I guess?
| A cancelled Darth Maul game from a few years ago might still happen Posted: 25 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT A few years ago, Red Fly Studios was tasked with making a Star Wars game known only as Battle of the Sith Lords. Featuring Darth Maul being an absolute badass, prototypes of it were made until eventually the game got cancelled, potentially due to the sale of the Star Wars IP to Disney. Recently talking in a reddit AMA, Dan Borth of Red Fly Studio has confirmed they are working on reviving the project, with the goal of pitching it to EA once they have something to show for it. EA hasn’t given the project the greenlight, so for now it is still technically cancelled, but Red Fly say they’re not done with Maul yet:
The prototype footage of the original game (courtesy of Game Informer) looks really interesting. A more violent version of The Force Unleashed, starring a shirtless Darth Maul doing evil Sith things with lightsabers and shit. Maybe if Battlefront does well, we’ll be seeing more of this in the months to come? |
After 23 years, a new and official Dizzy game has been released for free Posted: 25 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT Way, way back in the dark, unknown past of the 1980s, Codemasters published the Oliver Twins’ hit series Dizzy for platforms like the Sinclaire ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Amstrad CPC. Starring a sentient egg who had to save his friends, the last proper Dizzy game to come out was in 1992… which was before I was even born. Yikes. Well one day, the Oliver twins were rummaging through their loft when they found the design documents and files to a long lost and unreleased NES title called Wonderland Dizzy. Thanks to the series’ surprisingly active and passionate community, the Oliver twins and Codemasters were able to get the ROM running in a browser emulator. Now, decades after it was made, Wonderland Dizzy has finally been released for free. It’s considered to be the newest main series Dizzy game and has had some tweaks including wider language support and an infinite lives mode to make things a bit easier. You can watch the video talking more in-depth about Wonderland Dizzy’s discovery up top, or you can go to the official website to play the game in your browser for free on their website, which also fabulously looks like something from 1992. Now if you egg-scuse me, I need to hatch some new egg yolks to finish this news post off. I shell return once I have thought of them, as I’m convinced they’ll crack you up.
Posted: 25 Oct 2015 07:01 PM PDT Halo really grabbed me back in 2001. I had just won an Xbox from a Taco Bell contest (no joke), and I was getting ready to sell it when a friend told me about a little old sci-fi shooter from Bungie. After playing Halo at a demo kiosk at EB Games, I came back home and immediately unpacked my Xbox. From there, my enthusiasm was infectious. I used my network engineering class to forge a 50-foot Ethernet cable, and my group of friends proceeded to play Halo for months on end nearly every weekend across two consoles. Over the years, my love for Halo waned. Not only did the campaigns cease to grab me as time went on, but a lot of my fireteam companions have moved away, and I've had to play with them online instead. Halo 5: Guardians hasn't done a whole lot to pull me back in, but those of you who are still content with Master Chief and his wacky adventures across the galaxy will likely walk away satisfied.
