It's no Unity, but Assassin's Creed: Syndicate has some fun glitches

Posted: 25 Oct 2015 11:30 AM PDT

After stumbling upon an Assassin's Creed: Syndicate video embedded on Facebook wherein an NPC's carriage inexplicably began to shake violently and then erupt into the sky, leaving too stiff horses horizontal in the street, I remember how hilariously broken Unity was.

Syndicate doesn't seem as bad, but there are some series' familiar problems cropping up, some more annoying than others. Most common seems to be invisible character models undercutting the drama in cut scenes, people sitting on nothing, player invisibility, things freaking out and going airborne, guards chasing you while stuck running in place, and, of course, falling through floors.

Brett's still working on our Syndicate review, so enjoy these until then.

Killing Floor 2's Gunslinger weapons revealed

Posted: 25 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT

I've been a bad, busy boy. As the self-appointed Killing Floor 2 and Dungeons & Dragons guy, I've failed you, my friends. There just aren't enough hours in the day. But now I'm back!

Tripwire Interactive has been showing off the weapons for the upcoming Gunslinger perk. Attached are pictures of the 1858 Revolver, the M1911 (with silly KF2 engravings), the Desert Eagle, and the .500 Magnum Revolver. Whenever the next update hits, you can roleplay as Revolver Ocelot himself, though you won't have his exact guns. Maybe someday!

There are other teased changes: instead of only having a flashlight on certain weapons, each player will have a body flashlight, and there will be more volume sliders for optimal audio experience. I'm not sure how I feel about the flashlight change, since that seemed like it was a component of weapon balance. We'll also be seeing Killing Floor 2 at PlayStation Experience, so we'll finally know more about the upcoming PlayStation 4 port.

Payday 2 dev insists that microtransactions are here to stay, community isn't having it

Posted: 25 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT

There's a shitstorm going on at the Payday subreddit today, and for good reason -- the devs have recently implemented microtransactions after they promised they wouldn't. This particular Category 5 is based on an AMA held by Overkill producer Almir Listo, which fans are going crazy over.

For starters, Listo deflects nearly every well-intentioned question regarding the implementation of microtransactions, and attempts to directly PR-speak the community, which is a bizarre tactic. He also outright blames the media for misrepresenting the topic in some sort of desperate straw-man maneuver, when it's clear to practically everyone that this was implemented in one of the poorest ways possible (basically in the dead of night under the guise of an event called the "Black Market Update").

Despite the blowback though, the microtransactions are here to stay. Listo confirms this in the AMA, noting, "We understand that there is a lot of fury, anger and disappointment with us adding this. From an economical standpoint however, completely based on statistics, we can already see that the Black Market update is working as we intended."

The thing is, Overkill will probably stand to make a lot of money on this system, preying on whales and casual players, leaving their dedicated fanbase in the dust. While I don't have an inherent issue with microtransactions in games where they're easily ignored, the fact that they already promised that they wouldn't implement them, and proceeded to ignore their dedicated community with tone deaf, canned responses is troubling.

The real question is -- will it be worth it in the long term if they don't budge on this.

Sup Holmes get hallowed with Fran Bow's Natalia Figueroa

Posted: 25 Oct 2015 06:15 AM PDT

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

[Update: Show's over everybody! Thanks so much to Natalia for hanging out with us and sharing so many personal, creative, and professional insights. The rerun should be up soon. In the meantime, here is a man named Cinnamon Toast Ken playing Franbow.]

Today marks the last Sup Holmes before Halloween 2015 and we're going to do our best to slice up a spooky treat. Our guest Natalia Figueroa (KillMonday Games) will be on to talk about her supernatural horror/comedy point-and-click adventure Fran Bow, and I'm going to be wearing some kind of holiday make up. I have exactly 15 minutes to decide if I'm going to go for an Uncle Fester look (which would come pretty easily for me) or go all out for a skeletal ambition.

Tune in live at 2:30pm EST (our new time!) to see for yourself

Konami's new Bomberman is for smartphones

Posted: 25 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT

My morning ritual involves waking up, wiping the sleep out of my eyes, coming to the realization that I have survived another night, and busting open the laptop to read all the hot Japanese video game news that happened while people on this side of the planet were fast asleep.

"A new Bomberman!" I silently exclaimed this morning, a momentary rush of enthusiasm washing over me as I continued to read, learning about Taisen! Bomberman, an iOS and Android game coming to Japan this winter with cross-platform multiplayer and a 100-stage single-player mode.

My excitement quickly faded and was replaced with something closer to indifference, as I sighed and wondered what sort of great Bomberman games might exist if Hudson Soft weren't dead or had someone other than the dreaded Konami acquired the rights to Hudson's properties.

"Oh well," I said to my Jack Russell, probably. "At least it's not a goddamn pachinko machine."

Some gaming videos are getting blocked in the United States due to YouTube Red

Posted: 25 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT

As you may know, I used to be a pretty active YouTuber (getting there again) and I've just received an email informing me that a few of my videos will no longer be viewable in the United States due to disputes over YouTube Red agreements with copyright owners.

The videos being blocked are specifically for the following games: Attack on TitanHatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2, and BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. All three games are notably developed and published by Japanese companies. These videos all had content ID matches for the music included in the games previously, meaning the publishers were making money off the ads served on the videos. I probably could have disputed these videos as fair use, but didn't bother because I knew they wouldn't garner many views.
