| Void and Meddler is a grimy cyberpunk point-and-click Posted: 21 Oct 2015 02:30 PM PDT Cyberpunk is often a particularly nasty genre. It's an evolution of noir, which is why you see conventions of noir regularly appear in cyberpunk stories. The morally ambiguous main character, the even more ambiguous romantic interest, the nigh-insurmountable conspiracy -- all tropes found in both cyberpunk and noir. Whereas noir usually comes with a fedora and a smart suit, cyberpunk comes with a sick node in the back of your skull that lets you surf the internet with your eyes, man. That same confluence of genre conventions returns for Void and Meddler, a point-and-click game that has the proper amount of grime. The teaser trailer (which we've embedded below) hits a lot of my notes, right down to some kind of Future Drug™ and Future Sushi™. It reminds me of Kentucky Route Zero filtered through Blade Runner. It's also giving me a bit of a Read Only Memories vibe. The Future Drug™ has a mixed gender symbol that you can see in some of the screenshots. The game also takes place in a city "where genders and species melt into each other," which sounds a lot like Read Only Memories' choose-your-own-gender system. As is a regular thing for adventure games nowadays, Void and Meddler will offer plenty of player choice that will affect their story and the world around them. The first episode of three is set to release on October 29, 2015. You can pre-order the full season for $12, if that's something you're into! |
| Rock Band 3 tracks should be playable in Rock Band 4 by end of year Posted: 21 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT People who played Rock Band 3 can expect their Rock Band 4 library to grow significantly in the coming months. Since Rock Band 4's October 6 launch, Harmonix has been at work trying to bring old content onto the new platforms. The most recent game is the first up. Harmonix wrote a post on its website detailing the going-ons. If all goes according to plan, Rock Band 3 will be able to be imported to Rock Band 4 on December 8 when an update gets pushed. The caveats are that you own and have played a copy of Rock Band 3, and that you pay a $15 export fee. The export fee isn't new to Rock Band, but it has steadily increased over the years. The cost to export the first Rock Band's tracks into Rock Band 2 was $5; it was $10 to export from Rock Band 2 to Rock Band 3. An interesting aside in Harmonix's note is that the developer is soon losing the rights to sell Rock Band 3. That agreement comes to an end on October 30, at which point the game won't be sold digitally anymore. Of course, you can still pick up a physical copy at any retailer that's still carrying stock. Harmonix seemingly has no intention of stopping after Rock Band 3. It's also working on exporting the other Rock Band titles into Rock Band 4 (apart from The Beatles: Rock Band). There's no word on when any of that is expected to happen, because it's not a given that it ever will happen. Harmonix also released this chart to help clear up any confusion because digital rights ownership is tricky. Let's take it one step at a time, and that first step is Rock Band 3 on December 8. | Assassin's Creed Syndicate finally uses 'London Calling' in a trailer Posted: 21 Oct 2015 11:30 AM PDT "London Calling" is a very good song by The Clash, a very good punk band. Through its staccato'd guitars and less-than-frantic pace, it tells of social and political concern in England's capital. There's a feel-good veneer covering the lyrics that are anything but. Assassin's Creed Syndicate, a video game that is imminently releasing, takes place in Victorian London. By some great exercise of restraint, Ubisoft hasn't yet put out a trailer with "London Calling" as its backdrop. That is, until right now. Really, it's a fitting song for the game. Assassin's Creed titles typically try to tie in era-appropriate social and political elements -- even if it's usually ineffective. Still, that's probably not what any marketer had on his mind with this one. They probably just thought "London Calling?! Oh, I know just the perfect thing! This will really rock the casbah!" |
| Just Cause 3 makes for a neat 360-degree video Posted: 21 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT It might just be that I'm still new to 360° videos and my sense of wonder hasn't worn off yet, but I got a kick out of this one for Just Cause 3. We get to follow protagonist Rico Rodriguez on a wingsuit ride as he blows up bases and shrugs off a bunch of bullet wounds. |
| Octodad: Dadliest Catch to get Wii U release on October 29 Posted: 21 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT While children are dressing up as Marvel superheroes and/or Disney princesses and adults are doing the same but with sexy versions (think Ant Man but with assless chaps), one humble cephalopod will be dressing up as a regular dad. Sure, he's been at it for almost two years now, but this time he'll be on a Nintendo console. That's right; Octodad: Dadliest Catch is coming to Wii U. For the Wii U version, Dadliest Catch will feature off-TV play and compatibility with just about every control input available, from the GamePad to a lowly Wii Remote. For its first week on the Nintendo eShop (October 29 through November 5), it will be $11.24, after which it will jump up to its normal price of $14.99. |
| Without gunboots, Downwell was an altogether different game Posted: 21 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT Slowly but surely, Downwell is taking over our staff. As it well should -- it's fantastic! It might not look the part at first glance, but get your hands on this game (preferably with a controller), and you'll see why it's infectious. In short: you're never more than a few seconds away from getting into the zone. Once you get good at playing Downwell, you won't stop feeling good. It's a game about reading your environment and descending strategically. It's a game about momentum. A large part of that stems from the central mechanic: your trusty gunboots. You can shoot to slow your fall, or kill enemies, or destroy pesky platforms, but ammo is in short supply. To reload, you'll need to land, and doing so for even the briefest of moments can be dangerous. It's hard to imagine Downwell without gunboots, but they weren't always there. |
| YouTube launching subscription service with exclusive PewDiePie show Posted: 21 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT Today, YouTube announced its new service YouTube Red that will have exclusive shows, movies, and make the site ad-free for $9.99 a month. Among the exclusive content announced for YouTube Red is Lazer Team, a sci-fi comedy by Rooster Teeth, and Scare PewDiePie, a reality show from the producers of The Walking Dead. PewDiePie will explore sets inspired by famous horror video games while a camera crew follows him, capturing his reactions. |
| Haha, holy shit, no one bought EA's basketball game Posted: 21 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT Remember how NBA 2K16 was the best-selling US retail game in September, toppling even Madden and Metal Gear Solid V? Well, that one is made by 2K. Electronic Arts also makes a basketball game, NBA Live. NBA Live was so bad EA stopped making it for several years and then tried to reboot it with NBA Live 14, which was bad, and kept on giving it a try with NBA Live 15 and, this year, NBA Live 16. NeoGAF extrapolation of those same NPD numbers has NBA Live 16 US retail sales at about 8,000 to 2K16's over 1 million. PastaPadre notes seeing no more than 120 people (connected online) playing, even at peak hours. The revived Live has gone from claiming 2-3% of basketball market to less than 1%. Just like last time, consumers have an idea of which basketball game is good, and which one blows, and they just aren't buying the latter. Even if EA could make Live good next year, the franchise name is so damaged (again). I can't expect EA to keep at it much longer. Just make another NBA Street with Mario characters. No one bought NBA Live 16 [PastaPadre] |
| You can drive the DeLorean in Rocket League Posted: 21 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT Talk of Back to the Future is inescapable today. It's October 21, 2015 and, as it happens, that's an important date for the series. We're now living in the distant future Marty McFly traveled to in the second film. Cue tweets, videos, and blog posts about anything and everything BttF. I can't help but be a part of the problem thanks to Rocket League. That DeLorean DLC we told you about is now available for $1.99 on Steam and PlayStation 4. The tires can even flip up! This isn't the first time I've paid for something like this and it surely won't be the last. |
| PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate is great (and now on Steam!) Posted: 21 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT Mmm, fluid dynamics. Double Eleven has brought PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate to Steam at long last. This package repurposes Q-Games' darling twin-stick shooters into a cohesive, singular experience with an optional new visual style and improvements to scoring and treasure tracking. At $8.99, it's a good buy. These games are great! But Ultimate is even cheaper with loyalty coupons. Folks who own PixelJunk Shooter on Steam will get a 20% off coupon (and that save data is compatible with Ultimate). There are also 5% off coupons associated with the other PixelJunk titles on Steam. So, if you own Monsters, Eden, and Nom Nom Galaxy, you're looking at an additional 15% off. These discounts stack, but they only last until November 3. |
| Take 48% off on Grand Theft Auto V for PC Posted: 21 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT Want a take a ride on the savings express? (Last pun, promise.) A new low on the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V has surfaced at Green Man Gaming. Earlier today, the digital retailer launched a 40% instant savings discount on the game, dropping her from $60 to only $40.19. Stack on the unique 22% off coupon for additional savings, making a final total of 48% off list and a new historic low price.

| Ubisoft says Vivendi investment was 'unsolicited and unwelcome' Posted: 21 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT As it turns out, not everyone's always happy to receive $161 million. That's the case with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot (and other staff) after Vivendi bought 6.6 percent stake in the French publisher. In an internal email obtained by GamesIndustry International, Guillemot called the investment "unsolicited and unwelcome." He also pointed out how Vivendi has a history of "aggressively pursuing companies within the entertainment sector." There are concerns among Ubisoft employees that this investment was just a first-buy for Vivendi toward eventually gaining a majority control. Guillemot is specifically worried that a Vivendi takeover would mean that Ubisoft is controlled by a group that "[doesn't] understand our expertise and what it takes to succeed in this industry." He asserts that Ubisoft will "fight to preserve [its] independence," and that this unwanted investment shouldn't distract the company from its game-making goals. Vivendi is most notable in the games industry for once owning the majority of Activision. Two years ago, Activision paid more than $8 billion to regain its independence. That won't be the path Ubisoft takes if Guillemot has anything to say about it. Ubisoft: "We're going to fight to preserve our independence" [GamesIndustry International] |
| Posted: 21 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT Just like being knocked out for too long, having a gun shot right next to your ear is, like, super bad for you. Rainbow Six Siege needs to show some consideration for its hostages because tinnitus is no joke. A little hearhole protection goes a long way. Mopp. Mopp. |
| Rumor: New DLC coming for Until Dawn titled Rush of Blood Posted: 21 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT According to an email received today by Destructoid, verified and confirmed through a second independent source, Sony is currently performing market testing in the UK on a piece of Until Dawn DLC, tentatively titled Rush of Blood. The DLC, which appears to be an on-rails first-person shooter, is being designed to work with PlayStation VR.
While it's currently unclear how far along this DLC project is, it seems like it's set in the same areas as the main game, and relies heavily on motion controls. So, how do you feel about the prospect of on-rails, virtual-reality Until Dawn DLC? |
| Last Fallout 4 trait video explains why Luck is so critical Posted: 21 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT Good fortune is a godsend in The Wasteland. It can mean the difference between finding treasure or finding trash. More importantly, lady luck smiling upon you might mean the difference between life and death. The last of Fallout 4's trait videos deals with the nebulous concept of Luck. Unlike the other traits under the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. umbrella, Luck doesn't direct affect any skills. Instead, it increases all skills and your chance of landing a critical hit. The survivalist who keeps his Luck low might as well walk around with a posse of 13 pitch-black cats. This concludes Bethesda's series of Vault Boy Fallout 4 videos. Fitting, as it seems as if our luck has run out. |
| This Resident Evil HD mod brings the original's campy dialogue back Posted: 21 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT When Resident Evil got a facelift on the GameCube, the dialogue was inherently upgraded -- and subsequently carried over to the new HD re-release. It wasn't a major fix, but it was far less campy than the original PlayStation version. Now, you can relive the all that PSX glory with this fix from the Resident Evil Modding Forum. Evidently it took quite a while as the remaster had over 500 audio files to edit, some of which had gunshots and sound effects mixed in. That's dedication! | I'm not sold on Heroes of the Storm's Artanis yet Posted: 21 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT Heroes of the Storm's Artanis isn't dropping officially until October 27, but those of you who pre-ordered Legacy of the Void can play him now, as part of an early access program. While Artanis might be a formidable foe within the confines of the StarCraft universe, I'm not sure I'll be using him to suit my Warrior needs. |
| Posted: 21 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT Similar to Evoland and its sequel, Bedlam is a game that hops between time periods and genres of gaming history. The latter, however, is a first-person shooter. I've grown up playing as many FPS games and mods as I could get my hand on, so I was very eager to jump in, knowing the game's premise. Thankfully, there are parts of Bedlam that brought me back to those "good ole days" of modding Half-Life and browsing gaming magazines for the deets on the newest shooter to hit the market. Unfortunately, parts of the game that remind me that not every genre is perfect. |
| Get a look at all of Laura's moves in Street Fighter V Posted: 21 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT If you're itching to try out Laura in Street Fighter V next year, content creator AXETB has provided a video of all of her moves, so you can start planning your tech early. This run-through even includes normals, and it's in slow motion so you can break everything down to your heart's content. Sadly, Laura will not be a part of the second beta round coming up this weekend, though R. Mika, Rashid, and Karin will be playable. |
| Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate ships over four million copies worldwide Posted: 21 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT Last we heard back in April, Capcom had shipped over a million units of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in the west. Now, we know that it has reached over four million shipped worldwide. To date, the Monster Hunter series has topped over 33 million units in sales. The four million number for Monster Hunter 4 includes download cards and eShop sales, and demonstrates the incredible market power of the 3DS. I still can't believe Sony let the Monster Hunter series slip through its fingers after it dominated on the PSP. Monster Hunter 4G [Capcom] |
| Review: The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes Posted: 21 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT People often say Zelda never innovates, but I'd argue that they haven't been paying attention to the many unique games in the series. Titles like Minish Cap feel completely different while maintaining the classic feel of the NES original, and spinoffs such as Four Swords often encapsulate that same spirit. That's also true of Tri Force Heroes, a new three-player spinoff for the 3DS. There's just one major catch -- like many other things in life, it's less enjoyable to play with yourself. |
| Scribblenauts developer hopes for $500,000 on Fig for its next game Posted: 21 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT When I hear "5th Cell," my mind goes to the good times I spent with 2008's action-tower defense Lock's Quest or 2009's creative puzzle platformer Scribblenauts. Those were cute, inventive 2D games. I definitely don't think of Hybrid, whose 3D cover-based shooting I had forgotten about entirely until seeing this new project. 5th Cell is continuing in Hybrid's tradition of making run-of-the-mill looking games with one neat twist. Today, the developer announced its free-to-play action-RPG Anchors in the Drift. At first glance, Anchors in the Drift looks like a standard Diablo-like, with its isometric viewpoint and and its magical abilities. The key that 5th Cell is hoping will differentiate Anchors is the ability crafting mechanic, which borrows a creative aspect from the studio's earlier titles. Abilities are made up of different cards, which can be assembled in any order, customizing them to fit the player's needs. Anchors in the Drift is the second project to come to the video game-focused crowdfunding/investment platform Fig. The first was Outer Wilds, which just barely made its $125,000 base goal. Real talk for a second here: this is weird, right? Crowdfunding a free-to-play game? Not even considering that the core gameplay looks just average, I can't imagine this making its goal. It's up on a little-known crowdfunding site, it's asking for half a million bucks, and it's going to be free when it comes out anyway. Who's going to be putting money into this, let alone the hundreds of dollars necessary to bypass the free-to-play mechanics? Just the investors? Best of luck to 5th Cell on this one. |
| Destiny's Trials of Osiris event delayed yet again Posted: 21 Oct 2015 12:30 AM PDT As we all know Destiny's latest raid is getting its Hard Mode variant this weekend, but the other major endgame event, the PVP-centric Trials of Osiris, is taking a backseat for the second weekend in a row. Unfortunately, Bungie designer Lars Bakken has confirmed the Trials will be delayed yet another week in favor of pushing out King's Fall Hard Mode. It was previously delayed last week because of a major exploit involving Nightstalker Hunters, and the power to use infinite supers. Technically the bug hasn't been fixed, as the Hunter's "Quiver" ability (that grants them multiple supers) has just been disabled to inherently disable the glitch. It's not ideal, as Quiver is one of the Nightstaker's best abilities, and many players treat Trials of Osiris as their main source of endgame entertainment, as they don't prefer raiding. | Square Enix plans to remake a lot of old games Posted: 21 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT Back at E3 this year, Square Enix announced probably the most-requested remake from the company's back catalog, a remake of Final Fantasy VII. According to a recently released annual report, Final Fantasy VII is just the start of a future in which the company plans to remake a bunch of its older games. Interestingly, Square Enix also discusses new ways of revitalising those old titles for new audiences, singling out the idea of adding VR support to remakes of old games. So, which Square Enix games would you like to stick your face directly inside? |
| Game of Thrones Episode 6 dated, Episode 1 available free now Posted: 20 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT The final episode of Telltales' Game of Thrones series, The Ice Dragon, will release on November 17, 2015. To celebrate, Episode 1 - Iron from Ice - is available for free on... well, everything (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC/Mac, plus compatible iOS and Android devices, too). So if you'd been holding off, you're able to explore the opening installment for free. Yay. I still have yet to play this series. What do you think of it? |
| PlayStation 4 price drops across Europe Posted: 20 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT You can now buy a brand-new PlayStation 4 in the UK for £300. Sony has announced it has revised the recommended retail price of the 500GB console to £299.99 in the UK, and €399.99 across Europe, including Austria, Benelux, France, Ireland, and Portugal. |
| Payday 2's latest update addresses complaints about the microtransactions Posted: 20 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT Remember last week, when Overkill went back on its multiple promises that it would never add microtransactions to Payday 2? Remember the uproar that happened because of it, and rightly so? Well, it looks like Overkill has listened and acted on feedback. Kind of. In day six of the Crimefest event, Overkill has added those infamous drills to the normal loot drops. You’re now able to earn the drills to get the pay-to-win weapon skins just by playing, and they’re rewarded to players in much the same way as any other item in the game. It goes a way to apologizing to the players who have been angered by the initial update, but who knows whether it will be enough to get people to go back to Payday 2. It’s worth pointing out we don’t know how rare these drops are going to be for players, so it’s not like they’re ditching the scheme altogether. If anything, this is just making the carrot all the tastier looking by teasing you every once in a while with what is in the safe, hoping you’ll be hooked enough to buy some more drills. Plus the fact there are still microtransactions in a game that people were previously promised would never have them is still a pretty big kick in the teeth. Also in day six of Crimefest is a reworked version of the popular First World Bank from the first Payday game. The entire heist is now possible to complete stealthily and has multiple goals to put it more in line with other heists in Payday 2. That’s a positive for those who weren’t driven away by Overkill lying, right? Right? Remember last week, when Overkill went back on their multiple promises that they would never add microtransactions to Payday 2? Remember the uproar that happened because of it, and rightly so? Well, it looks like Overkill has listened and acted on feedback. Kind of. In day six of the Crimefest event, Overkill has also snuck in a small patch that added those infamous drills to the normal loot drops. You’re now able to earn the drills to get the pay-to-win weapon skins just by playing, and they’re rewarded to players in much the same way as any other item in the game. It goes a way to apologise to the players who have been angered by the initial update, but who knows whether it will be enough to get people to go back to Payday 2. | Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter announced for spring 2016, my dear Watson Posted: 20 Oct 2015 07:00 PM PDT If you’ve not played Frogwares’ fantastic Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments, you are seriously missing out. The game combined the visuals of BBC’s Sherlock with the Victorian setting of the source material, with fantastically designed environments and a really cool deduction mechanic. The entire game was really great and easily the best Sherlock Holmes game to have ever been made. That’s why you should be excited for Frogwares’ recent announcement it is now working on the newest game in the series: Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter. Being published by Bigben Interactive (as opposed to Focus Home Interactive last time), The Devil’s Daughter is aiming to take the series in a slightly different direction. With a focus on drama and action, it claims that Holmes’ “ruthless logic is overwhelmed by family stories, irresistible emotions, and an occult revenge.” By the sounds of it, the game’s five cases will take place in an open world, as opposed to the set areas seen in the previous game. You can take a look at some ridiculously pretty screenshots in the gallery below. Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter will release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in spring 2016. That gives you enough time to go get caught up with Crimes and Punishments, so go do that. I’m pretty excited for Devil’s Daughter. |
