Get nude humanoid deer as stamps for Wii U this week

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 03:30 PM PDT

This Thursday, the game with the greatest Miiverse stamps of all time launches on the Wii U. Cutie Pets Pick Berries is an E-rated puzzle game that has hunky humanoid deer -- officially known as Mandeer -- matching berries while smiling intensely.

I'm seriously considering buying this game for these stamps. Just look at them:

PSN's Sale of the Dead doesn't do much for me

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Overall, can't say I'm feeling this October-appropriate PlayStation Network sale.

Many of these deals aren't all that noteworthy, but on the bright side, it is only week one (of two, presumably) and the sale does bring Grim Fandango Remastered down to $8.99 (PS4 and PS Vita).

Old favorites return in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Lately, Nintendo hasn't said much about Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash other than to note its fast-approaching November 20, 2015 release date for Wii U. Today isn't much different.

This latest video confirms a few unsurprising roster additions (Waluigi, Daisy, and my boy Boo), but I'm still left wondering about modes, content, and online play. I have been since June.

You like making me sweat, Nintendo? Because I'm getting worried.

Pokken Tournament is so unpopular in one Japanese arcade, it's being removed

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 12:30 PM PDT

One popular Japanese arcade has announced it is removing Pokkén Tournament due to lack of popularity and profitability, and the fact that the game will be releasing on Wii U next year.

redditor reports that the fighting game wasn't very popular even here in America at two Dave and Buster's, saying, "Pokkén machines were mostly a ghost town with little interest at Dave and Buster's, while everyone was raving near the Tekken 7 machines."

Perhaps Pokkén Tournament just isn't deep enough for the arcade crowd, or maybe Nintendo fans just don't like to leave the house for anything other than getting StreetPasses (I'm kidding).

'The story was written without writers': The one-year gutting and reassembly of Destiny

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 12:15 PM PDT

Remember when we learned comedian and writer David Cross and Brian Posehn worked on Bungie's Destiny, and then the company "did not use a single, solitary thing [they] wrote." That's not the half of it.

A lengthy Kotaku report talking with over half a dozen former and current Bungie employees has revealed the slapdash way Destiny got completely reworked in about a year. The short of it: long-time Bungie and Halo scribe Joe Staten and his team put together a two hour supercut video of Destiny's cinematic and story beats and showed it to their supervisors in July of 2013. Higher ups, including project lead Jason Jones, didn't like it, so they opted to scrap it and start from scratch. This, in July 2013, with a then-planned launch of March 2014.

It became obvious the team would need another extension (into September of 2014) and so gameplay and polish took precedence. "The writing team Joe put together was ostracized," one source said. "The story was written without writers. The extension actually made it so we could get things to the base level of acceptability, and that’s what we shipped."

Staten actually left the company during the midsummer reboot, though Bungie didn't announce his (allegedly not amicable) departure until September 2013. Jones and other top Bungie folks (art director Chris Barrett, design lead Luke Smith) did two weeks of "Iron Bar" meetings where they would take the existing work and stitch it together into a new, less-linear plot -- Bungie's "director" interface that let's players largely go where they want.

Stream the full Halo 5 soundtrack this week

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 11:30 AM PDT

Lately, my background noise of choice for work has been the ocean. There are enough recordings available that you can afford to get real picky, real fast. I like the sound of distant waves crashing, not that distracting up-close sloshing. The occasional stormy ambiance is nice, too.

But I'm going to burn out on this stuff before long. I can feel it.

Convenient timing, then, that the Halo 5: Guardians soundtrack is streamable via SoundCloud this week ahead of its paid release (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) on October 30, 2015.

If you just want to hear the iconic chanting, the first track has you covered.

Review: Tales from the Borderlands: The Vault of the Traveler

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT

[Disclosure: Anthony Burch, who consulted on the story for Tales from the Borderlands, was previously employed at Destructoid. As always, no relationships, personal or professional, were factored into the review.]

What a ride. When the first episode released late last year, I wrote in the review "If the rest of the season maintains this level of quality, Tales from the Borderlands will be up there in history with the other great recent Telltale adventures."

It is finished now and I am pleased to report that it kept up the brisk pacing, sharp writing, and truly heartfelt moments throughout the five episodes. There's no doubt this will be held in high esteem among adventure games. Tales from the Borderlands is the best series Telltale has ever produced. Period.

The best Black Friday Xbox One deal so far

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT

A 500GB Xbox One + Fallout 4 + Gears of War: Ultimate Edition + a second controller for $299.99. If this upcoming deal from Dell is any indication, it's going to be a productive Black Friday.

The online-exclusive deal begins at 6:00pm Eastern on Thursday, November 26. And it will probably be out of stock by 6:01pm, sharp, considering a) these discounts are meant to drive traffic and additional shopping and b) that time of day is relatively convenient.

Doom alpha invites are going out today

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Curious about how the new Doom looks and feels? If you're signed up for the beta (redeemable codes were included with early copies of Wolfenstein: The New Order), you may find out soon.

Bethesda is now sending out invites for this weekend's multiplayer alpha test, which runs from Friday, October 23 at 12:00am Eastern to Sunday, October 25 at 11:59pm on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Participants were chosen from the aforementioned beta pool.

In this alpha, players will get to fight each other six versus six on the industrial map Heatwave. There's a single Demon Rune that can turn its collector into a Revenant and a one-hit-kill power weapon, the Gauss Cannon, for retaliation. Read up on the full equipment list here.

Capcom bundle adds Remember Me, Resident Evil 4

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT

Okay, now I'm tempted.

The Humble Capcom Bundle has added Resident Evil 4, a personal favorite that I can never seem to own too many copies of, and Remember Me, Dontnod's memory-stealing third-person adventure, to its pay-more-than-the-average tier (currently set at just under $9).

As a refresher, if you spring for those two titles, you'll also get Steam keys for Resident Evil: Revelations, the first episode of Revelations 2, Resident Evil 5, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, DmC: Devil May Cry, Lost Planet 3, and Strider. The $15 tier has Ultra Street Fighter IV and RE5 DLC.

If nothing else jumps out at you, Strider is worth the $1 minimum.

Star Wars actor left Uncharted 4 cast after 'weird changes'

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT

Uncharted 4 lost its writer and then its director in early 2014 amid allegations that writer Amy Hennig was "forced out" by The Last of Us’ Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, the pair that would go on to take control of the project. A year later, the game was delayed from its marquee fall 2015 spot and into 2016, giving Sony another weak holiday lineup on the exclusive front (compared to Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider for Microsoft).

Alan Tudyk (Star Wars: Rogue One, Firefly) was going to voice a character in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. He recently spoke to IGN about why he left the role (or was let go).

"I worked on Uncharted, the one that has yet to come out - I was doing a role on that. Really, I hadn't seen [Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North] since he and I had recorded years before," he said.

Review: Life is Strange: Polarized

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 08:39 AM PDT

It's perfectly fitting that Life is Strange's final episode is subtitled Polarized. I can't think of a more apt word to describe my mindset right now. Life is Strange's conclusion left me satisfied, but not for the same reasons that made the previous four installments so effective.

In fact, Polarized often betrays the very foundation of exploration and character-building that the game is built upon. It trades that for a more linear and scripted finale. It's a shame, but it mostly works. Still, it's not going to be the climactic closing to this game that make me look back at Life is Strange fondly. Swimming in the academy's pool with Chloe, and Max popping in her earbuds to drown out the school chatter are much more memorable moments.

Downwell tips and tricks to get down the well well

Downwell is one of the best games of the year and it's only $3. If the stellar reviews and word of mouth are enough to convince you that this game is excellent, you're in luck. And while it's pretty great to just learn how the game works through repeated, vicious deaths, here are some tips to get good quick.

Make a custom Pikachu plush at Build-a-Bear

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Uh, it's called the Build-A-Bear Workshop, not the Build-a-Fictional-Electric-Mouse Workshop. That egregious oversight aside, you, too can have an expensive plush as The Pokemon Company has partnered with Build-A-Bear.

Starting 2016, Build-A-Bear retail stores in North America, Europe, and Australia, as well as the online store, will have a Pikachu option. Kind of think doing it online removes the only novelty of going in a store and putting a doll together -- you can't even stick the heart in before it gets stuffed -- but whatevs, whatevs.

Unique customization options include a Poke Ball hoodie, that excellent Charizard costume, and a "Pika Pika" voice box. I'm sure you can try to squeeze some bear-sized sunglasses on his face as well, but given how many outfits Pikachu has in Japan (intern, luchador, etc), I think the options here are going to be pretty limited. You'll also get a limited edition Pokemon trading card with your purchase.

Destiny's hidden 'No Time To Explain' weapon found

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 07:45 AM PDT

Destiny players recently found a secret in the Not Forged in Light Daily quest, but nothing could be done about it -- until today that is, when the daily has arrived yet again. If you finished it before and picked up the extra Ghosts, you'll get a quest, which will allow you to re-enter and trigger the questline for No Time to Explain, an Exotic 290 pulse rifle.

Uncovered by reddit, all you have to do is go back in and grab all three hidden Ghosts in one run without wiping. To get the third Ghost, after you kill the Templar boss from the mission, do not finish the last bit in the Gorgon treasure room -- instead, head back down to where you would fight Atheon, by way of the jumping puzzle. Head left into the cave, then drop down to a ledge on the very bottom, to the right. That Ghost will trigger a new jumping puzzle to a portal on the left. Beating the miniboss inside will trigger the rest of the quest.

In essence, you're going to have to kill Atheon again (grab a checkpoint or just do it on normal), then do two quests. After that, voila, the weapon is yours. It's pretty easy all things considered, and it only took about 30 minutes for me to do earlier today. If you don't have the quest yet, now is a good time to get it started, as you'll have to wait until the next time the daily pops to get the weapon.

Star Wars Battlefront introduces playable Leia, Han, and Palpatine

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT

The best part of the recent Star Wars Battlefront beta was the incongruity and anticlimax of seeing iconic characters like Luke Skywalker and Daddy Vader die on the field of battle squished by an AT-AT.

Can't wait for it to happen to Leia, Han, and Palpatine. The PlayStation Blog has a post detailing the newest Hero/Villain characters. Looks like the datamining efforts were right.

Leia one-hit kills troopers with her blaster and is, "very much about support play, buffing team members, and holding positions." She can also call in supply drops for her team. Han is about, "offensive output, damage, and mobility." His Rapid Fire blaster lets you shooter as much as you want without overheating and he has a barreling "Shoulder Charge." Palpatine has Force Lightning and Chain Lightning, plus a dash, though he is the main Villain support character.

Also what the hell's going on with Han's hair?

Review: Downwell

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I'm only falling down wells.

Downwell is a game about getting down a well, but the only way to get down the well is to learn how to get down the well well. Because this Game Boy throwback is difficult, pitting you against a cast of monsters, gravity and yourself. But it's okay: you have Gunboots.

While the roguelike ties and cave-like setting might scream Spelunky, the mostly one-man project is more like a blend of Vlambeer's Super Crate Box and an upside down vertical shooter like Ikaruga.

This is not a Beedrill: Gardevoir now in Pokemon Shuffle

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT

In yesterday's update to Pokémon Shuffle on the 3DS, new main stages were added, finishing out the Albens Town area with Mega Medicham as its boss. You don't care about Mega Medicham though (especially since we already have Mega Lucario as a go-to Mega evolving Fighting-type). No, you care about Gardevoir.

This should come as little surprise to those who have been following along. The first Albens Town update added Ralts at Main Stage 217, then the second added Kirlia at Main Stage 223. Gardevoir rounds out the evolutionary line at Main Stage 238, just two levels before the boss.

Currently, Gardevoir is only available for Pokémon Shuffle players on the 3DS. Pokémon Shuffle Mobile is still holding back its main stage repertoire in order to stagger release. It currently goes as far as Main Stage 180 (Mega Aerodactyl).

Metal Gear Solid V's $179M day not enough to top sports games

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain made headlines for its $179 million opening day global sales, but here in the United States, Metal Gear was outsold in September by two sports titles, NBA 2K16 and Madden 16.

Of course, those two -- and most major sports releases -- are regularly, year-after-year, among the very best-selling games of the year. The Phantom Pain obviously did well. And its worth noting that NPD sales data is: 1) just for the USA and 2) only tracks retail copies. So if Metal Gear got a hell of a lot of downloads, it might be better than third-best for the month of September; unlikely, but not impossible.

Otherwise, the PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console for the 8th out of 9 months this year, though hardware sales actually dropped compared to this time last year. NBA 2K16, Madden 16, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and FIFA 16 all sold better on PS4.

Review: Pulse

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT

While having a blind protagonist isn't exactly a brand new idea, Pulse tackles the subject in a unique way that proves that video games are indeed art by being one of the most colorful experiences I've played to date.

Unfortunately art sometimes comes with a high price and ends up not only lacking vision, but being a bit short-sighted.

Life is Strange: Episode Five Achievement guide

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 04:50 AM PDT

Here we are, friends. It's time for the conclusion to Life is Strange's five-episode arc. I'm writing this prior to playing, and I have no idea what to expect. Well, that's a half-truth -- I expect to be an emotional wreck by the time this is all over.

But, we'll go out just like we started, and that's by snapping photos all along the way. Again, like all the other installments, Polarized has ten optional pictures along the way that unlock Achievements. There's a certain poetic allure to helping Max with this everyday aside while she takes on her herculean task.

In the event that you didn't clean up all the Achievements from previous chapters, the episode oneepisode two, episode three, and episode four guides will be a valuable resource to you.

Now for the formalities: Life is Strange has a chapter select feature that tells you how many photos in each section remain to be collected. However, make sure to select the option to "play this chapter in collectible mode" which will allow you to hunt without changing any choices you've already made.

Everything from here on out may contain spoilers -- especially if you haven't played the previous episodes. The screenshots that I've captured certainly give away where each Achievement can be found. I've listed them in the order in which they appear, but I highly recommend playing through once at your own speed before using a guide to clean up.

Let's go out strong. For Max.

There's a Gardevoir in this Pokken Tournament trailer

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 04:45 AM PDT

Sure, this general Pokkén Tournament trailer is a little less balls to the wall exciting than seeing Luchador Pikachu doing a Stone Cold Stunner, but, hey, there's some Gardevoir action going on, eh?

The Bandai Namco-developed fighting game is in Japanese arcades now and is coming to the Wii U worldwide in early 2016. Chris and I played it just last month at Tokyo Game Show and were surprised by the depth. Each pocket monster has a surprising number of moves. It's nice to see a non-conventional, new take on a one-on-one fighter, and with the Pokémon license, it should do well.

You can buy the Chibi-Robo amiibo separately in Japan

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT

In western regions, you'll have to pony up for the Chibi-Robo!: Zip Lash bundle to gain access to the Chibi-Robo amiibo, but it looks like a recent listing proves that isn't the case in Japan. It's a fairly typical practice there, getting standalone figures, as they've even had a solo Squid amiibo without the need for the Splatoon 3-pack. It's a pretty sweet proposition if you aren't keen on picking up the game.

We've reached out to Nintendo to see if there's any chance of this coming west. For now, the website claims that Chibi-Robo amiibo is coming in "holiday 2015."

Halo 5 will be invading Minecraft soon

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Microsoft is only just getting started with the over-saturation brand synergy aspect of Minecraft. On October 23, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One editions of the game will host more DLC in the form of Halo 5: Guardians skins.

The good news is that if you already own the Halo Edition mash-up pack, you'll get free access to the new Blue Team and Fireteam Osiris characters, which include the two main characters of Guardians -- Master Chief and Locke.

If you don't own it already it's priced at $3.99. All my friend's children still play Minecraft, so it's not going away anytime soon -- I'm okay with that.

Konami insists Kojima hasn't left, is 'on vacation'

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 03:45 AM PDT

Yesterday, The New Yorker ran a piece about Hideo Kojima's last day in-office at Konami, including his good-bye party on October 9, and noting that his non-compete expires in December, at which point he can do whatever he likes.

Konami, though, according to Tokyo Sports and translated by Kotaku, insists Kojima is still an employee of Konami, and simply "on vacation."

A spokesperson at Konami’s Tokyo headquarters said, "Currently, Kojima is listed as a company employee [at Konami]. Currently, Kojima and the development team are finished developing Metal Gear Solid V and are taking a long time off from work. Because the development time for console games is so long and fatigue builds up, it’s common for employees to take extended periods of time off when development is finished."

Now, it could be that the whole development team is taking a vacation and that everyone simply knows it's the last time Kojima will be in the studio that used to bear his name even though he is under contract until December. The original piece noted that Konami's president, Hideki Hayakawa, and its CEO, Sadaaki Kaneyoshi were both absent from the party, while the Konami spokesperson said, "We’re not sure what kind of thing this was," when asked about the good-bye party. It could also be Konami being squirrely.

Review: Tales of Zestiria

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT

My history with the Tales series is sort of akin to an on again, off again relationship. I was introduced to Phantasia by way of a friend's import copy, and immediately fell in love. After that I only dabbled in a few entries before being courted all over again by Vesperia, then went back to dabbling.

But when Zestiria came across my desk, I knew it was time to jump back in again. I'm glad I did.

Fast and Furious 6 chase recreated in GTA V

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT

Fast and Furious 6 is an excellent film. I know Fast Five is the zenith of the series for most fans, but I prefer Furious 6 for the same reason I prefer Saints Row IV to The Third; the excitement ramps up in a way that feels natural in the context of that universe, as opposed to just slamming me in the face with all-out lunacy at random intervals. Also that part with the flipped car was sick.

YouTuber Sam of RUNitsAlpha agrees, because he's created a near shot-by-shot recreation of Dom Toretto's crew pursuing Owen Shaw through the streets of London. At first blush, it's legitimately impressive. The movement is synced perfectly to the audio, and it's neat to see the obvious potential inherent to a GTA/Fast and Furious crossover finally realized.

And then you see the side-by-side comparison, and that's when you really begin to appreciate this video. Obviously, it's not a perfect recreation -- the 60 FPS presentation on the GTA side honestly threw me off, and there are certain limitations that are just unavoidable -- but I'll be damned if I wasn't truly impressed. Also, the use of music from the Fast and Furious soundtrack was an obvious touch, but I dug it nonetheless! Good work, Sam.

Review: Guitar Hero Live

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT

As I've said many times in the past, I was a Guitar Hero man all the way up until I first laid eyes on that beautiful keyboard for Rock Band 3. The Hero series was stale, iterating annually (sometimes multiple times in a year), and assisted in the great plastic market crash a few years back. Meanwhile, Harmonix cleverly used its game as a unified platform, and stuck to providing DLC support.

Years later though things have changed. While Rock Band 4 is content with giving you more of the same, Guitar Hero Live completely reinvents itself, for the better.
