Mushroom 11's world is beautiful desolation Posted: 17 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT Every so often a game comes along that lends itself to a big ol' screenshot gallery. To fit the bill, a game obviously needs to look good, but it also helps if it has a simple control scheme that allows easy access to the F12 key. Typically, this comes up with Telltale's cinematic experiences, but other titles work too. One such title is Mushroom 11, whose review went up earlier today. With its simple point-and-click controls, it was easy to keep a finger on the screenshot button, and some ugly-but-pretty areas had me hitting it often. The following gallery features shots of each boss and some puzzle solutions (including one where I was doing entirely the wrong thing before realizing what I should have been doing), so if you want to go in spoiler-free, avoid it. Otherwise, check 'em out!
Interview: XSEED Executive VP Ken Berry Posted: 17 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT Ken Berry is the Executive Vice President and one of the founding members of XSEED Games, one of the premier localization houses responsible for bringing Japanese games to western audiences. Earlier this week at an XSEED-hosted event in San Francisco, I had the opportunity to see the studio's latest crop of games (including titles in the Earth Defense Force, Senran Kagura, and Legend of Heroes series) and discuss them (and more) with Mr. Berry.
The first full Ratchet and Clank trailer is not great Posted: 17 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT The first full trailer for the Ratchet and Clank movie has been released, and it's ridiculously generic. I get the "In a world..." joke, and I get the overwrought narrator, but this is the most kids movie-ass trailer I've seen in years. There's super broad physical comedy, there's a short comic relief character yelling the word "awesome," there's a villain establishing his dominance, there's a little pun that allows the trailer to swear without actually swearing, there's a Hot Pop Song, and zero laughs were had. This trailer seems almost dangerously bereft of real jokes. The Ratchet and Clank games are genuinely funny, so this project looked like an easy win for game-to-movie adaptations. Now, I'm less certain. The curse continues!
Posted: 17 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT From the beginning, Mushroom 11 establishes itself as something different. Though it has been done before, the whole concept of traveling from right to left in a 2D game can still be jarring simply because of its rarity. It sends the message: "You will not be doing the same stuff you're used to doing." Throughout the seven levels, it mostly delivers on that message. Though it can be described as a puzzle-platformer in general terms, there is no jump button. In fact, the central control scheme is like nothing else. Some familiar challenges and solutions show up, but the unique control forces a different kind of thinking than traditional puzzle-platformers have required.
Prey for the Gods looks like a new Shadow of the Colossus Posted: 17 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT At first, Prey for the Gods looks very similar to a crafting-heavy survival game a la Rust filtered through some Never Alone. But that's only the first part of the trailer. Prey for the Gods looks beautifully nihilistic, a story that appears to be just as much about the indomitable human spirit as it is being abandoned by a force you never truly understood in the first place. There's a lot I like about what this game's selling, especially the "kill your gods to save the world" angle. If I know my fiction, I'd bet you a cool hundred that killing the gods actually doesn't fix anything and the last moments of the game are also the last moments of that world. Currently, we have no word on a release window or even targeted platforms. Turns out the trailer I just linked said 'Coming to Windows and Mac'. My bad!
Weekend Deals: Warhammer Vermintide only $20 as beta goes live Posted: 17 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT Yesterday the Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide beta went live on PC. The beta key giveaways appear to be over, but if you pre-order you can jump in the co-op FPS "beta" right away before next week Friday's release. There's a 32% off deal at GMG for End Times - Vermintide, making the base game $20.25 or $30.37 for the digital Collector's Edition (lots of in-game and digital bonuses that we're not sure is worth an additional $10). Also at GMG this weekend is an decent "Hail to the Heroes" sale. About 200 PC gaming titles are up to 85% off instantly with a stacking GMG coupon to use for additional savings. Notale discounts are listed below like $3 Just Cause 2, $6 Tom Raider GOTY, and more. (Yeah basically an Edios sale). In console game deal this weekend think Best Buy. They have several decent offers going on like the Wii U Deluxe console with Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land for $250 - a prelude to bigger price drop during Black Friday? Also on sale are PS4 titles like Until Dawn slashed $20 to $39.99, its historic low price point. Several Wii U games are also discounted like Splatoon for only $45.
Dizzy joins Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator roster Posted: 17 Oct 2015 06:15 AM PDT Dizzy will soon be joining the cast of Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator, the updated version of last year's Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign, after being selected by Japanese arcade players in a popular vote. While Dizzy has been playable in the past, until now the half-gear ranged fighter has only played a role in Guilty Gear Xrd's story. She will join Jam Kuradoberi, Johnny Sfondi, and newcomer Jack-O as additions to the Xrd roster in Revelator, which launches on PS4 and PS3 in Japan next spring. Arc System Works has not announced an international release for Revelator at this time. 『Guilty Gear』シリーズの人気キャラクター「ディズィー」の制作が決定 [Arc System Works]
Rise of the Tomb Raider has exploding chickens Posted: 17 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT In case you had any doubt about Lara Croft being a terrible person, in Rise of the Tomb Raider, her latest adventure, the sociopathic archaeologist has the ability to use chickens as explosives. Rather than use, say, an inanimate grenade like a normal, sane person, Lara apparently prefers strapping munitions to living, breathing creatures and watching them die fiery deaths. The hilarious and disturbing ability isn't available in the standard game; it's part of a GameStop pre-order bonus package, which includes a gun, outfit, and other abilities that do not involve poultry.
XSEED named a cow after Hideki Kamiya Posted: 17 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT The original title of this article was "XSEED named a cow Swag Lady," which is also true. There are several cows in Return to PopoloCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale, a cute and leisurely little RPG, if my brief time with the Nintendo 3DS exclusive this week is any indication. XSEED localization specialist Tom Lipschultz certainly has a better feel for the game and franchise in general, coming to the studio's fall showcase with a copy of the original 1985 manga in tow. Lipschultz, beaming with genuine enthusiasm for PopoloCrois in a way only a true fan could, was more than happy to tell me more about the series than I could possibly retain. Which brings us back to the cattle. Being the soiled philistine that I am, one of the few details that stuck with me was a story about bovine, specifically, a cheeky naming process that resulted in one of the dairy cows being christened "Hideki" after the ill-tempered Platinum Games producer. So, if you're milking Hideki after Return to PopoloCrois launches early next year, make sure to take a snapshot and tweet it at Kamiya. He'll probably block you, but it might be worth a laugh.
