GDC 15 DLC #4: Pita wraps, damn good fries and ragtime Posted: 08 Mar 2015 01:00 PM PDT We didn't have usual cameraman Kenny Redublo during our fourth lunch of GDC (see us dining with Dale here) and things went a bit awry. Our substitute cameraman Mike Cosimano had some fun with it, though, with some silent movie magic. You missed me gushing over the Felix the Cat-styled Cuphead, Brett explaining what the hell Xbox spent Thursday discussing (free Xbox Live on PC, for example) and me going nuts over these excellent fries. Like, I don't want to oversell a fry. It's just exactly how a fry should be.
Weirdest thing at PAX East 2015: Mineplex freezing cold fan line Posted: 08 Mar 2015 12:15 PM PDT Videogame events are know for their strange sights, but after going to PAX or E3 for a few years, one can start to feel like they know what to expect. That sense of routine was thrown out the window this past Saturday while I was running back from PAX East to put quarters in my parking meter. On my way, I stumbled upon a line of hundreds of shrieking teenage girls, parents, and younger children waiting for... something. They didn't want to tell me what they were doing there at first. In fact, one cheeky teen went as far as to look me straight in the face and tell me that they were all waiting in like for Starbucks to open. "They have a new flavor shot." she quipped. I had almost forgotten how sassy and extroverted teenagers could be. Thanks for the fun reminder, sassy teen. After talking to a few more people in waiting, I was told that the line was dedicated to a group of Youtube personalities called "The Q" who were having a meet-up that day. I've tried researching them since and I'm still not entirely sure who they are. The only one I found confirmation of is named Parker, who I actually met for a brief second here. He seemed nice. To be clear, this line wasn't planning on going anywhere. It didn't lead to a building or a door or any other semblance of an end point. The line was apparently an "event" in and of itself. By the time I stumbled upon them, they had been out there for at least an hour. Members of "The Q" had been running up and down the line occasionally, signing autographs and high-fiving fans, but other than that, nothing was happening. That was apparently enough to keep their fans in place. They seemed happy, shivering there in the freezing cold, waiting for another high five or "Parker sighting" opportunity. I saw the line again about two hours later, when I was headed back to my car to fill the parking meter for a second time. They were still cold, and still shrieking. Did they ever end up going somewhere and doing something, or did they all eventually decide to go home? I may never know. Regardless, knowing that we're in a time when teenage girls are sometimes just as excited to meet professional videogame enthusiasts as they might be to meet a professional musician or actor has me feeling a weird mix of confusion and happiness. Revenge of the Nerds indeed.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a brilliant asymmetrical game Posted: 08 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PDT In Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, a game originally developed at a game jam, one player wears the Oculus Rift and sees a bomb that needs to be defused but doesn't know how to defuse it. Their partner only has a binder. Like, a real binder -- no Oculus Rift involved. The binder has all the steps needed to defuse the bomb, but the reader can't actually see the bomb. It's a game about communication, and it is wonderful not only to spectate, but of course to play. It's really the only game on the PAX East show floor that keeps me coming back for more.
Experience Points .07: Paper Mario Posted: 08 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PDT Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome. This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time. This entry is all about Paper Mario. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments!
GDC 15 DLC #3: Japanese katsu curry with Dale Posted: 08 Mar 2015 09:45 AM PDT Look on ye hungry and despair. Familiar face Dale North joined us for the third Daily Lunch Chronicles (watch the last one here). Back behind the camera, Kenny managed to empty his plate before both of us while shooting, but he didn't have to take pained talking breaks when all he wanted to do was eat this curry. It was fire. More BoxBoy!, Quadrilateral Cowboy, and talk of the eating gauntlet that takes place at GDC. If I had a scale I would be afraid to stand on it. Does someone want to exercise with me? Maybe do some yoga? Also, I was wearing white pants in this video.
I nuked the God of Lightning in Mayan Death Robots Posted: 08 Mar 2015 09:30 AM PDT There's been a lot of games that try to copy the success of titles like Worms or Tanks, but often come off feeling too derivative. "Yeah, it's like Worms, but not quite as good" has definitely left my lips a handful of times. Needless to say, I was a little cautious heading in to Mayan Death Robots after hearing such comparisons. Thankfully, Mayan Death Robots is a unique twist on something that definitely owes its roots to Worms but truly feels like its own experience with innovations. It's exciting to play and exciting to watch, plus you can be a giant robo-monkey and throw banana bombs.
Review: Five Nights at Freddy's 3 Posted: 08 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PDT While it has been a mere four months since the last sequel was released, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is set years after the events of the first game. Crafty businessmen keen to exploit the gory legacy of the infamous Freddy Fazbear's Pizza restaurant have assembled a slapdash haunted house attraction, Fazbear's Fright, using real props and recovered animatronics from the infamous murder restaurant. What could possibly go wrong? I can't help but wonder if one-man-band developer Scott Cawthon is being a bit cheeky with this setup, commenting on the popular accusation that he's cranking out sequels of his surprise cult hit to cash in. I suppose you can't blame a guy for striking while the iron is hot. Much like the attraction itself, Five Nights 3 is a grab-bag of recycled parts with some new gimmicks tossed in to liven up the experience. How much fun that is will depend on your tolerance for the now expected (but still embarrassingly terrifying) jump scares, and if you come to the series for its gameplay, or for its world.
| Meet the third ever employee of LucasArts right now Posted: 08 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PDT [Update: Show's over folks! The rerun should be live this week. In the meantime, he're a clip of David talking about working with George Lucas from Video Games: The Movie.] David Fox created the best point and click game ever (my opinion). It is called Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. Now he is working on Thimbelweed Park and maintaining Rube Works. We're going to talk and it's going to great.

Borderlands characters are now in Dance Central Spotlight Posted: 08 Mar 2015 03:45 AM PDT Gearbox and Harmonix have worked together in the past with a dance section in one of last year's trailers for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. At the PAX East Inside Gearbox panel, Gearbox and Harmonix announced a new partnership. Vault Hunters Nisha and Claptrap are now available as character models in Harmonix's Dance Central Spotlight. The panelists discussed the trepidation over including Claptrap, since he doesn't have legs. As it turns out, it was fairly easy for Harmonix to insert him into the dance game. The usual tailbone is mapped to his wheel, and it ended up working without any extra tweaks. Dance Central Spotlight players can download the newest patch, then enter X, X, X, X, X or Y, Y, Y, Y, Y on the character select screen to unlock these characters. No money necessary; it's a cheat code! Like the old days!
| Star Trek Online establishes in-game memorials for Leonard Nimoy Posted: 08 Mar 2015 03:30 AM PDT Leonard Nimoy passed away last week. Though his legacy is broad and varied, most people know him best as Spock, Star Trek's most recognizable Vulcan. The same goes for the MMORPG Star Trek Online, as developer Cryptic Studios opened their contribution to the late actor's remembrance: A permanent in-game memorial. The memorials, which consist of a statue of Nimoy as Spock and a sculpture of the Vulcan IDIC (a triangular symbol referring to "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations") are located on Spock's home planet of Vulcan, and on the planet of New Romulus, the latter of which recognizes Nimoy's work in Star Trek: The Next Generation, where an older Spock acted as ambassador to the Romulans. Cryptic have also opted to add a memorial plaque recognizing other departed figures important to Star Trek. The plaque contains Nimoy's name, as well as those of Deforest Kelley (who played Dr. McCoy), James Doohan (who played Scotty), Majel Barrett (who played Nurse Chapel), and of course, Star Trek's creator, Gene Roddenberry. Check out some screenshots of the newly-opened memorials (with crowds of players paying their respects), as well as of black flags of mourning hanging in prominent social areas. | Gearbox hints at the possibility for a new Brothers in Arms Posted: 08 Mar 2015 03:20 AM PDT At the Inside Gearbox panel today, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey were on stage promoting Tales from the Borderlands, when Baker went into a story about how he loved working on Brothers in Arms, and how the final cutscene felt like it would lead up to something great, but nothing has come from the series in years. Squirming in his seat, Gearbox's Mikey Neumann seemed to want to keep Baker from talking more, but hinted that he might have something to look forward to soon. Neumann made it clear that it was not an announcement, but that the two should talk later about potential future developments for the series. |
Tales from the Borderlands Episode 2 set to release week of March 17 Posted: 08 Mar 2015 03:15 AM PDT Telltale's panel came and went with some fun stories of the studio's journey but nary an announcement of what the developer is doing now. Judging from the comments in just about every Telltale article that goes up, the second episode of Tales from the Borderlands is pretty hotly anticipated. It turns out that the announcement was being saved for Gearbox's panel. At the panel, Telltale debuted the trailer for Episode 2: Atlas Mugged. The video should be available to the general public tomorrow. Telltale was reluctant to give an exact release date, but the current plan is for Atlas Mugged to release during the week of March 17, finally continuing the story of the unlikely team of Rhys and Fiona. The duo isn't in great shape in the aftermath of Episode 1, but they are still maintaining the tenuous partnership. The delay between the first two episodes was jokingly blamed on Mikey Neumann, who did voice work for this episode in the role of series staple Scooter. Awesome badass Athena was also shown to have a part in this installment.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel: Claptastic Voyage comes out March 24 Posted: 08 Mar 2015 01:50 AM PST During today's Inside Gearbox panel at PAX East, Gearbox unveiled the trailer for the fourth piece of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel downloadable content. The story content picks up after the end of The Pre-Sequel and leads into the beginning of Borderlands 2 where the player meets Claptrap in the tundra of Pandora. Jack learns that his recently murdered boss Tassiter had valuable software hidden away inside Claptrap's mind, so he digitizes the Vault Hunters to go retrieve it. Gearbox debuted the trailer for PAX East attendees, featuring giant Handsome Jack heads, confetti, and glitched weaponry. The content is described as lasting "several hours," and will release on March 24, the same day as Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.
