Samus tries to interview Tim Rogers at PAX about Videoball

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 02:30 PM PST

We've got a whole lot of PAX East 2015 coverage headed your way over the next week. On the video front, a lot of our coverage will feature Destructoid regulars like Jed Whitiker and myself talking to videogame developers and publishers about the usual stuff. In the midst of those shoots, we accidentally started a new series called What Samus Wants where Samus Aran of Metroid fame dons her robe and journalism hat in an earnest attempt to "get into the business".

Today she talked to Sean Velasco from Yacht Club Games about all the new characters they are working in to Shovel Knight. She also attempted to chat up Tim Rogers from Action Button Entertainment, though as you can see, that didn't quite go as planned. Tomorrow she's set to interview Kit and Krysta from The Nintendo Minute about Splatoon, and later, Dan Adelman about Axiom Verge. If all goes well from there, she may be meeting up with Sexy Layton and Sexy Luke to talk about... videogames? I'm not sure.

I wonder if we'll see Juliet again tomorrow? She's current my new favorite person, for reasons that I hope are obvious.

Square Enix releases five Final Fantasy Type-0 HD character trailers

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PST

It’s only a week and a half till the release of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD on March 17, and Square Enix has released a series of trailers so you can meet the students of Class Zero. The handy playlist above introduces Machina, Rem, Cinque, Cater, and Trey, five of the heroes trying to save Orience. Unfortunately the trailers are in Japanese, but they look good!

I remember seeing screens of this game when it released on the PSP, and remember being super jealous that we never got it. I think it’s gonna be a return to the aesthetic that made Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII so great, and you get to breed chocobos. I love chocobos.

Next week's Cities: Skylines pre-order deals up to 27% off

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 01:00 PM PST

Next week's release of Cities: Skylines has a pre-order discount right now making it cheaper than 2013's SimCity at MSRP. The new city-builder game from Colossal Order starts at $29.99 and can be pre-order for a bit cheaper at a few digital retailers.

To really sweeten the pot, digital retailer Green Man Gaming has the title as part of its "VIP Gaming Sale" this week, where the game is 27% off MSRP. That cuts the price down to a mere $21.89. Just log in or create an account on this page to see the discount.

The same percentage discount applies to the Digital Deluxe Edition. In a similar fashion DLGamer has a 25% off coupon and is a good alternative for nearly the same percentage off (especially if GMG's VIP deal doesn't work in your particular region).

Resogun Defenders is DLC done right

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PST

As a semi-jaded gamer, I typically despise the concept of DLC. Often times we are presented with content that either doesn't live up to the price or publishers push their content too early in a game's life. Resogun Defenders for the PlayStation 4 is the exact opposite of that.

Even if you're a casual fan of Resogun and haven't picked it up for some time (like me), at $4.99, Defenders gives you so much value and pleasure that you'll want to drop whatever AAA title you're currently stuck on and really get into this -- because there's a lot to get into.

After recently adding challenges and a photo mode for free, Resogun Defenders adds two new game modes -- Protector and Commando. Both are fantastic and make the game significantly better. I admit, I've never been terribly good at Resogun, but I always enjoyed it nonetheless. With these added modes combined with challenges, I now have a desire to delve deeper and get better.

In Protector mode, you race around the map trying to rescue as many humans as possible. The fun starts when you're suddenly flooded with humans and the panic overtakes your body. Gotta catch 'em all is pretty much your goal -- as impossible as it seems at times.

Radio Dtoid LIVE from PAX East 2015 is happening!

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 11:30 AM PST

[Dtoiders Nanashi and TheDustinThomas have once again agreed to assist us with a recording of Radio Destructoid live from PAX East! Now's your chance to be a part of Radio D history! --Mr Andy Dixon]

It's that time once again! PAX East is upon us, which means seven hour lines, new games to play, talking to Jonathan Holmes, and partying with Dtoiders!

As per usual, I'm particularly looking forward to the last part. And for another year until they realize it's a terrible idea and I should totally be fired, Radio Dtoid let us take the helm and record a live episode for them! With the exception of Kyle who will probably at least make it onto the recording, this would be an entirely community-driven episode of the podcast because there won't be any of the actual hosts there. So let's get down to brass tacks before Conor thinks about what he's just set in motion here.

Planet of the Eyes is a treacherous place for Polaroid robots

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PST

Crash landing on an alien planet is the worst. There's hazardous flora, deadly fauna, and even rock formations that seem to have some sort of blood lust. That just piles on top of the existential crisis of being a robot with an unknown purpose. Such is the existence on Planet of the Eyes.

I played through a couple of demo sections at PAX East. One showed off puzzles while the other demonstrated more action platforming. Both were rife with opportunities for robot death and dismemberment. At the very least, the planet is beautiful as it is repeatedly and mercilessly trying to kill me.

New radio station coming to GTA V

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 10:30 AM PST

Rockstar remains busy improving and tweaking Grand Theft Auto V. With the impending arrival of heists, they also have plans to add another radio station -- except only on PC at first. I guess us console peasants are going to be left out for a little while.

Set to arrive on April 14 with the debut of the PC version, the new station is called The Lab and will feature The Alchemist and Oh No. Also, a full standalone album will follow on April 21.

The station is said to cover "every corner of the fictional world of Grand Theft Auto V and features guests from across the musical spectrum – including Earl Sweatshirt, Little Dragon, Phantogram, Freddie Gibbs, Popcaan, Killer Mike, Tunde Adebimpe and Samuel T. Herring (from Future Islands)."

March's grab bag of monthly musings

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PST

For the month of March, Andy, Occams, and I had a slight problem. Oh sure, Destructoid's ninth anniversary is going on, and we'll tell you more about that later. But what about another monthly musing? The community loves to talk about topics together as a group and a monthly musing helps facilitate that. Only problem is that we are either uncreative or busy.

Skyworld takes unique advantage of Valve's new virtual reality tech

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 09:30 AM PST

We got a big shock at the beginning of the week when Valve announced its partnership with HTC to produce a new virtual reality headset. We all knew the company had ambitions to enter the console market with Steam Machines, but the inclusion of a VR device makes it seem all the more bold. The VR arms race we're seeing with Facebook, Sony, and now Valve shows that it's likely going to get heated in the coming years.

Over the course of GDC week, Valve let only a select few members of the press go hands-on with its device and play some demo titles. It was behind closed doors, and many people were turned away. But fortunately, Destructoid was among the few to give the new technology a test drive and experience the VR title Skyworld from the developers at Vertigo Games.

Friday Night Fights - Dance the Night Away!

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PST

Oh look at you, my pretty little girl, sitting there with your face all painted up in your little halter top, you're nothing but a little slut. Who wants to guess what movie I just watched? That's right, Sharknado. I love that flick. So. Damn. Bad. Flying sharks eating people. People being cut out of flying sharks. So amazing. The incredible talents of Ian Ziering AND Tara Reid? So much talent and prestige, all in one spot. Doesn't get better than that.

In non-terrible movie related news, I've really been going at streaming on Twitch the past week. In doing so, I've discovered I am terrible at figuring out Twitch and OBS. I thought it would be a simple affair (and it is really), but I went in gung-ho and not reading anything. Needless to say (read the guides on starting), it took me a minute to stop looking stupid. I plan on focusing on upcoming/indie games for my personal stream and playing more mainstream (as well as upcoming) games on the official Destructoid Twitch channel (Wed. & Thurs. night 10pm-11pm PST). Last night I streamed the upcoming DmC Definitive Edition remaster and some fun talking to Orlion in chat. I also plan on playing through the entire Halo MCC saga (with a special guest hopefully) on the official Destructoid channel starting next week, so please tune in for that. Other than that stuff let's play some games! Real quick though: Do you think that, even without the talent show, Sky would still wanna kiss me?

Rumor: It looks like there might be amiibo for Splatoon

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 08:37 AM PST

According to Raru, a South African retailer, there might be an amiibo launch on the way for Splatoon. Listings for "Splatoon Boy" and "Splatoon Girl" were found on the site, in addition to Greninja and Jigglypuff amiibo. Could this be all or part of a possible amiibo Wave 5? We know for a fact that the latter two are coming as part of the Super Smash Bros. amiibo line, but the date is still unknown.

I didn't think about it before today, but it makes perfect sense for Nintendo to ease people into a brand new risky IP with amiibo. I imagine the functionality could involve bringing over your own character for multiplayer to a friend's house, too.

Penny Arcade would team up with Telltale on a Thornwatch game

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PST

In a question-and-answer session at PAX East today, Penny Arcade founders Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik got onto the topic of their fantasy IP Thornwatch, which Krahulik has developed into a tabletop game. In an offhand comment, the pair mentioned that they would love to work with Telltale on an adventure game in the universe. The vision sounded a bit like Game of Thrones, in that it would incorporate various viewpoints from within the universe, including the Lookouts and the Daughters of the Eyrewood.

Unknown to Holkins and Krahulik, Telltale co-founder Dan Connors had stayed in the room after his own panel, and had heard the entire pitch. Though this is far from confirmation that the two companies will work together in the future, it is certainly plausible given how the developer has formed collaborations in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if this actually ended up happening.

Review: Zombie Army Trilogy

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PST

The Sniper Elite series has been around for quite some time, entertaining fans since 2005 on pretty much every platform known to man. But alongside of the core historical-centric games there has been a lesser known sub-franchise known as Nazi Zombie Army, complete with a demonic Hitler and the same sniper-heavy gameplay of the core franchise.

Rebellion Developments has repackaged the two existing games in a brand new bundle called Zombie Army Trilogy, which also includes a previously unreleased third entry. Confused yet? Don't be, because in essence, they're a collection of horde-mode like encounters with mixed results.

Downwell has a simple premise but it's damn fun

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 07:45 AM PST

A glance at Downwell's tricolor palette in still shots doesn't really do it justice. Watching it in motion gives a better idea what it does, but not until actually playing it does it all click. It is built around a simple mechanic: press the button to jump; press it again in the air to fire gun boots downward.

The recoil doesn't act as a double jump exactly. No extra height can be gained from the shots, but the little protagonist's descent can be slowed. The catch is that the boots have limited ammunition in a magazine and reloading requires a stop on solid ground. Those simple mechanics produce a surprising depth in the trip down the well.

I couldn't trick the eye-tracking tech in Assassin's Creed Rogue

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 07:15 AM PST

Whenever I get my hands on new technology, my first inclination is to try to break it. Well, not the way Fred Durst likes to break stuff, but to see if I can expose any hiccups in the design. Going into a demo for the SteelSeries Sentry, an eye-tracking device, I was confident it wouldn't take long. After all, I can make some pretty minute eye movements that would surely throw it off.

I was dead wrong. No matter where I focused my gaze, the SteelSeries Sentry followed right along. The first (and mandatory) example of this is during the introductory calibration. While it was significantly inaccurate before calibrating, the process cleared that right up. Suddenly, there was a tightly-packed cluster of flickering dots on the screen wherever I looked.

Those dots were indicative of a finer degree of tuning than the human eye can perceive. Each time they wiggled about, which was constant, it represented a vibration or movement of the eye -- something that was completely impossible to actually notice no matter how steady you might think you're staring.

We'll need Windows 10 (or an Xbox One) for Gigantic

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 06:30 AM PST

Motiga's team action game Gigantic is looking fabulous in this new trailer out of PAX East.

While that's no surprise, this is: the Seattle-based studio is partnering with Microsoft to bring the game to Windows 10 as "a key launch title," in addition to Xbox One. Progression and purchases made in-game will carry across the two versions and, optionally, there's cross-platform play.

"You will ultimately even be able to opt in to play matches with friends across platforms -- matches where everyone has agreed to mix PC gamers and console gamers," said Motiga. "If you're not interested, no problem -- you don't have to opt in."

I have mixed feelings about this publishing deal -- for what it's worth, Motiga says it'll make for a better game -- but then again I'll probably just end up playing Gigantic on Xbox One.

Mario meets Shadow of the Colossus again

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 05:45 AM PST

Hooray! Illustrator Jason Lupas has come out with more Mario and Shadow of the Colossus mashups following the pieces we covered last month. I'd love to see a game follow this concept.

There's a finished version of the prior Donkey Kong sketch, an underwater scene (shown above), and a cool four-legged reimagining of the Chain Chomp. Good stuff, Jason.

Tactical cyberpunk game Syndicate free on Origin

Wait, no, forget I ever mentioned it. I'm sorry.

Instead, nab the original Bullfrog Productions-developed Syndicate for free through Origin's On the House. Once the game is in your library, it'll stay there, and this is a good one to have.

Blizzard's multiplayer FPS Overwatch adds a gunslinger and a bodybuilder

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 04:30 AM PST

I keep forgetting that Blizzard is off working on a team-based shooter called Overwatch. Maybe part of the problem is the name? It's definitely not the characters -- there's a spacesuit-wearing gorilla with glasses named Winston, for crying out loud. That speaks to me.

This fine GDC x PAX week (make it stop!), Blizzard announced two new characters: McCree, a revolver-wielding outlaw, and Zarya, a Russian bodybuilder with a particle cannon.

There are accompanying videos, but don't expect much in the way of presentation here. They're a rather no-frills demonstration of the characters' various moves, which I actually appreciate.

So *that's* how Sakaguchi got stuck making Final Fantasy after Final Fantasy

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PST

"How'd they get him?"

That question comes to mind when I go back and watch some of my favorite Mega64 videos. Somehow, there have been skits with big-name creators like Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, and Ken Kutaragi. Now here's another in that vein: "Hironobu Sakaguchi's Final Fantasy."

Did he just staple his computer monitor? He just stapled his computer monitor.

Gone Home canceled for consoles

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 03:30 AM PST

With Majesco's money troubles -- the company does not have new games in development for 2015, but is instead continuing to distribute its back catalog -- and the closure of its indie publishing arm Midnight City, the PC hit Gone Home is staying home.

Fullbright's Steve Gaynor confirmed to DualShockers that, "Gone Home for console is not actively in development any longer."

Gaynor didn't rule out an eventual console release, but right now the studio is working on its new game, Tacoma.

Dragon's Dogma Online will have its first alpha in April

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PST

Sony has announced that Dragon's Dogma online will have its first alpha on PlayStation platforms (PS3 and PS4) in April. Apparently the build is "invite-only," but you can still sign up to be selected if you happen to have a Japanese-region PSN.

I know people are down on the free-to-play element, but I definitely want to give this a shot. I'm a fan of Dragon's Dogma's world in general, and I think this has the potential to be fun.

Telltale founders discuss the studio's evolution at PAX East 2015

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 02:45 AM PST

At PAX East's big opening panel, Telltale Games co-founders Dan Connors and Kevin Bruner talked about how Telltale came into being. They began by following the storytelling path through the ages, from telling stories around a campfire to Choose Your Own Adventure books to Dungeons & Dragons. The panel focused on the studio's desire to craft malleable stories for players to enjoy.

Connors and Bruner worked together on the unreleased Sam & Max: Freelance Police together at LucasArts, but as the developer was shifting focus toward Star Wars, the two decided to start Telltale. On the studio's vision in 2004, Bruner said "We really wanted to capture the idea that stories are things that are shared."

The founders went over the studio's repertoire of titles over the past ten years, from the comedy puzzling of Sam & Max to the darker titles like The Walking Dead. They traced the evolution from single episode titles to seasons, and the waning of puzzles in favor of pure storytelling. The two closed with an analogy on the spaceship Voyager, where the studio isn't exactly sure what it will find in the next five years, but it's sure to see new stuff.

Soul Axiom is a cross between Journey and Tron

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 02:30 AM PST

Everything you could say about Soul Axiom feels reductive. It looks like Journey mixed with Tron, except when it looks like Tron mixed with Tron. It’s a puzzler that evokes The Talos Principle in both its non-linearity and its environmental conundrums. And the story is a spiritual successor to developer Wales Interactive’s previous title Master Reboot. This is the kind of stuff I try to avoid when doing previews.

But it’s still accurate, and it doesn’t diminish how interesting this game looks. Soul Axiom is an unsettling and compelling techno/cyber-thriller, with a killer visual style that matches its high-concept premise. Whether it actually delivers on its many promises is another thing entirely, but there’s a lot to be excited about so far.

Play Evolve this weekend, earn a special gold monster skin

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PST

There's a special gold skin for the Goliath, Kraken, and Wraith hidden within Evolve's code. It was previously only available for developers, but now, players will have a chance to nab it.

All you have to do is play Evolve this weekend. From 9:00 PST on March 5 (yesterday) until 9:00 PM PST March 8, you can unlock the skin by playing a match. The skin won't be available immediately though, as developer Turtle Rock states that it will be delivered by March 14.

It's a nice little extra, but likely won't make up for all of the DLC peddled at launch for many.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend is getting a localization

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 01:00 AM PST

Aksys Games has announced that BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend will be getting a localization on PS3, PS4, Xbox One, and Vita this summer.

Can't keep track of BlazBlue's updates and sequels? The "Extend" is quite literally an update to the existing BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, which recently launched -- it features some tweaks (Guard Crush), as well as a returning character and a new one.

Sounds great! I'm generally a bigger Guilty Gear fan over BlazBlue, but I'm still interested in keeping up with it.

Destiny will get one more update before the next expansion

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PST

The last update for Destiny was pretty great. I logged in to check it out, and promptly quit because there really isn't anything to do. Bungie is teasing the next update however (1.1.2), of which it isn't giving details yet. It will be the last update before the House of Wolves expansion.

Will Queen's Wrath ever come back? Will Iron Banner ever be more than a PVP re-skin with mixed rewards? We may never know, because Bungie might not give anyone a reason to come back until the paid expansion.

In other news, famed data-miner megamanexe64 notes that Inferno Skirmish looks to be coming to PVP on April 21, which is basically a more hardcore "kills-only, free-for-all, no radar" variant. So far, most of his "predictions" have been correct. Could this coincide with the 1.1.2 update?

Monster Hunter 4's Legend of Zelda DLC will arrive this month

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 11:00 PM PST

[Update: it's live today! Go pick it up]

Still playing Monster Hunter 4? Well you'll be happy to boot it up on March 6, as a number of free DLC items are arriving at that time.

On that day, you'll get a Link outfit, including a bow, shield/ sword, and armor pieces. A new quest will also debut called "Clockwork Contraption," as well as some extra weapons.

The new DLC schedule is apparently on Fridays going forward. Good guy Capcom, going forward with free DLC -- then again, Monster Hunter is conducive to it as fans basically expect it.

EU FNF: Last Minute Before Bed Edition

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 07:34 PM PST

I almost passed out without posting this. Then I realized I hadn't wrote anything yet (way to go dingus) and here we are. Crap. Sooooooooooo, I'm tired. It's 1:30am here and I have to be up at 7 to take kids to school and go to the doctor afterwards. Really got nothing on my mind. So how about dem Bears? Eh? Great hockey team. Seen any good adult films lately? Just saw Teachers myself. Lovely flick. Good plot structure. They did a good job plugging up any plot holes as well.

That's really all I got. I'm going to go dream about playing Halo. Just got the MCC and man, what a nostalgia rush. CE still holds up today. I really love they included the anniversary edition in there. Tried Halo 4 and it's pretty, seems neat, no real knock against it. Still, it feels off though. Just..... not right.

Like Panza's face. *shudders* Ugh. Dat face.
