Review: Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 03:00 PM PST

A little more than four years ago, Nintendo released Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! on the original DS. It continued the series' focus on the miniature Mario robots, to the chagrin of fans of the platforming in the original. In our review, Jonathan Holmes said "It didn't make me feel much, or think much, or have much of a memorable effect on me at all."

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars plays the same as Mini-Land Mayhem!, but with a few new features. It remains a puzzle game that acts as filler; it can be picked up and played just as easily as it can be put down and forgotten.

Daily cat fix: Splatoon's Judd takes a cat nap

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 02:30 PM PST

Most developers put out lots of trailers, gameplay footage, and screenshots galore to get us excited about their upcoming games. Nintendo uploads this 30 second video of Judd, the feline judge from Splatoon, taking a nap.

Yep.

It's so weird and random, yet cute and calming at the same time. I doubt this actually means anything for Splatoon, but at least it got me thinking about the game again. I have high hopes for this one, what with all the crazy characters they've been revealing. The developers clearly have a lot of love for their creations, and I can't wait to see more!

Halo: The Master Chief Collection patch seeks to bring relief

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PST

As is the trend nowadays, big-name titles don't get released polished and complete, that's what those day one suckers are for. Recently, the biggest suckers have been the Halo faithful who have been crushed under the immense weight of issues associated with the The Master Chief Collection.

Well, fear no longer young spartans, because according to early reports of the latest MCC patch, those pesky problems that have plagued the game may finally be gone -- most notably improved matchmaking performance and success rates. Here's a list of what 343 Industries has attempted to improve:

Meme Run pulled from Wii U eShop by Trollface creator

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 01:00 PM PST

In a continued lack of self-awareness, Carlos Ramirez (a.k.a. Wynne), creator of the popular meme "Trollface" has filed a DMCA takedown against Ninja Pig Studios. The filing claims unlicensed usage of the Trollface likeness in their Nintendo Wii U eShop game Meme Run infringes on his copyright of the image.

Rumor: Phil Harrison taking his talents elsewhere

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PST

News from GDC has it that the one-time Sony exec and now Microsoft executive Phil Harrison is planning to leave his position with the company. Sources have confirmed with GamesIndustry.biz that he is stepping away after being hired by Microsoft in 2012.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Harrison grew frustrated after Don Mattrick left and was subsequently blocked from climbing the corporate ladder with a promotion. Apparently, Harrison gave Microsoft some type of ultimatum that if he wasn't moved up, he would leave.

Well, it looks like Harrison might be backing up his words and will be moving on. But where to? Back to Sony? Off to Nintendo? Please don't say Zynga.

In the many years that I've been involved in gaming, I haven't ever really immersed myself in the community. I've lurked, I've commented a few times, and I've been to physical meetups and conventions, but I think that cyber-shyness has prevented me from really stepping out. That's dumb and counter productive, so it's time to dive right in and get the ball rolling.

That Metal Gear Online trailer is still so dang good

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 11:30 AM PST

Steven covered this well-edited footage of Metal Gear Online in December, but here it is again with commentary by online community manager Robert Peeler. Yep, that's good enough for me.

The balloon-firing trap shown at 1:54 is the stuff of dreams. Same goes for the enchanting plush puppy. (At one point it was going to be a "real" dog, but the designers didn't want us to shoot that.)

Looks like Unreal Tournament is in capable hands

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PST

The new Unreal Tournament is going to look gorgeous once Epic and the community are finished working on it. Last I saw of the project, it had only just become "a game," and now here it is making real good use of Unreal Engine 4. According to Epic, the map shown in this video, Outpost 23, "sets our visual bar for where we would like to see Unreal Tournament continue moving forward."

You can download a pre-alpha build of the game (or simply follow its continued development) over here. It takes a certain type of person to be interested enough to want to do that, and I imagine said person is fully capable of destroying me in UT, so I'm going to pass for the time being.

Madden NFL 15 latest EA Vault addition

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 10:30 AM PST

EA Access continues to prove itself worthy as Madden NFL 2015 has just been added to the current lineup of available games in the The Vault.

It's a shame Sony turned down this service. Despite their concerns, it appears to be providing plenty of value -- at least it would for me.

Seen at GDC: Game development is for whites only

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PST

Spotted around the happenings of this year's Game Developers Conference was a sticker that tells us game development is for whites only.

Diversity in game development (especially amongst the sexes) continues to be a hot-button issue and with statements like these, it appears we have a ways to go for race diversity as well -- at least in this anonymous person's mind.

While the sticker doesn't outright say it is trying to promote diversity, we have to assume the placement of SELMA, ALA, in the bottom left corner is a big hint that it is.

EA closes SimCity maker Maxis Emeryville

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 09:30 AM PST

Another studio with a storied legacy has fallen under Electronic Arts. The Emeryville offices of Maxis, the force behind simulation games like The Sims, SimCity, and Spore, shut down today.

EA says it's "consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki, and Melbourne," and added that "These changes do not impact our plans for The Sims."

According to the company's statement to Kotaku, "All employees impacted by the changes today will be given opportunities to explore other positions within the Maxis studios and throughout EA. For those that are leaving the company, we are working to ensure the best possible transition with separation packages and career assistance."

Closing a game studio in the midst of the Game Developers Conference? Not exactly subtle.

Why do some developers shy away from surrealism in gaming?

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PST

When it comes to crafting videogames out of the norm, there’s one question developers should ask themselves: What are we afraid of?

Games are the perfect medium for exploration of bizarre, unnatural worlds, and yet it seems few developers are interested in traveling to those places. What makes us afraid to innovate beyond the comfort of realism? While mainstream games rarely stray from convention, many indie developers are plumbing the darker corners of the human mind, creating strange worlds that both thrill and unsettle us.

Battletoads join Shovel Knight on Xbox One in April

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PST

Shovel Knight is on its way to Xbox One in April, and the Battletoads are coming along for the ride.

The Battletoads, who debuted on the NES in 1991, are going to be returning in the Xbox One version of Shovel Knight! It has been so much fun to bring the radical attitude and gameplay of the NES classic to the Shovel Knight world.

While Rare's amphibian heroes are making an appearance in the Xbox One version, God of War protagonist Kratos will have a cameo of his own in the upcoming PlayStation Network release.

Will we ever see any classic Nintendo characters on the Wii U or 3DS versions? We asked the team at Yacht Club Games, who said they "would love to see that happen." Any suggestions?

What was the very first PlayStation 2 game you ever played?

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PST

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the PlayStation 2. In those 15 years, we've already had two more Sony console releases, but the PS2 is still near and dear to many of our hearts. The console gave us many of our favorite games, from huge hits like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Kingdom Hearts, and Metal Gear Solid 3, to more experimental titles such as Shadow of the Colossus, Persona 4, and Katamari Damacy. The PS2 had something for everyone, and many people consider it to be one of the greatest consoles of all time.

But where did it all begin? Everyone has their own special memories of when they first saw the PlayStation 2 in action, and of their very first time playing a game on the console. Whether you got the PS2 at launch, waited a few years before diving in, or played it at a friend's house, everyone had to start somewhere.

So what was the very first PlayStation 2 game you played? Here's what our staff had to say:

Creative Assembly reveals inital pitch video for Alien: Isolation

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 07:46 AM PST

Alien: Isolation was one of my biggest surprises of last year. As huge fan of the film series, I always wanted to play a title that emulated the original movie's tone and style. Though the action of the James Cameron-helmed sequel Aliens was far more conducive for videogames, it was especially brave of RTS developer Creative Assembly to make a direct sequel to the original film.

At a postmortem panel at GDC, Creative Assembly's Alistair Hope discussed the origins of development on this particular title. Wanting to try something new, the developers crafted a mood piece showing off the environment and creatures that inhabit it. Similar to the tone and style of the Nostromo from the original film, they wanted to show that they could create an Alien experience that not only injected the horror of the unknown, but also made the alien itself scary once again.

We seldom get to see pitch videos, so it's great to see where it all began. Creative Assembly totally knocked it out of the park with Alien: Isolation and it was a real pleasure to see the evolution of the title, including the game's original third-person view.

Never seen Alien: Isolation third-person footage shown at GDC

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 07:45 AM PST

One of the great joys of attending GDC is going to panels conducted by developers talking about your favorite games. Not only will you learn new and exciting details about the development, but you might even see something that you would not expect.

During a postmortem panel for Alien: Isolation, creative lead Alistair Hope talked about the title's former life as a third-person survival horror game. As they were developing it, they talked about the trends the genre stuck to, thanks in part to Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, Clock Tower, and Silent Hill 2. They initially sought to emulate that perspective and style, but after experimentation, eventually decided to return to Isolation's original vision as a first-person title.

We had the unique opportunity to check out the game in third-person, and it certainly looks...different. It could've been good, but I won't deny that I'm quite used to the perspective we've got now.

GDC 15 DLC #1: Chicken shawarma wrap

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PST

We're at the Game Developers Conference all week. GDC is pretty cool, but also a convention, which means gross convention center lunches. We want to have nice lunches all week. Not too nice. Downtown food is overpriced, even for San Francisco where a thousand bucks a month qualifies as cheap rent.

We went Mediterranean with our first lunch of the week. Well, I did. Brett Makedonski just chugged a Mountain Dew because he is a proud disgusting American. Our cameraman Kenny Redublo (of A la cartridge fame) brought a glass jar filled with yogurt, granola, and blueberries.

Oh, and we played a bunch of weird games at the Indie Megabooth earlier, some of which we remember to talk about.

Tomm Hulett's unified Mario Timeline Theory

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PST

Game director Tomm Hulett has been working in the industry since he was a kid, starting with a job testing NES games. Since then he's worked on everything from PersonaContraSilent Hill, and Adventure Time, but no matter what he does or where he goes, Mario will be in his heart.

Tomm asked me over a month ago if Destructoid would be interested in hosting one of his pet projects, a split-timeline that poses a theory on how every Mario game is connected that he'd been working on with artist Howard Milligan. I was excited about the idea, but was crestfallen a few weeks later when I saw that someone had apparently beaten Tomm to the punch. I shouldn't have worried. When I told Tomm that someone else has tried their hat at a Mario timeline, he said something like "Oh that? That's nothing. Wait until you see the size of the thing I've got for you."

He wasn't kidding. The image he was working on ended up being too large for Dtoid to host (you can grab it for yourself here), though we were able to shrink it down to a still-massive size for our gallery's servers. I'm not the Mario expert that I should be, but I'm pretty sure each and every game Mario has ever appeared in has found a place on the map, including Hotel Mario and Mario's Time Machine. He even got the the Super Mario Bros. movie in there somehow. The only thing I see missing is Mario Paint, but I suppose that could be construed as part of the "Mario Sports Series." I did have a guy try to convince me that Football was an art once, so I guess it's only fair to call Painting a sport.

Xbox One controller adapts, goes wireless on PC this year

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 06:00 AM PST

At GDC 2015, Microsoft announced plans to release a wireless adapter for Xbox One controllers on Windows later this year. Great news, but we need dates, Phil Spencer. Specific dates!

I had terrible luck with my wireless adapter for the Xbox 360 gamepad -- damn thing was spotty at best, non-functional at worst -- so here's hoping these new ones are an improvement.

Microsoft announces cross-buy program for Xbox One and Windows 10 devices

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 05:45 AM PST

Speaking at a GDC presentation today, Xbox boss Phil Spencer just announced plans to support cross-buy and other cross-platform functionality between Xbox One and Windows 10 devices.

Sony popularized cross-buy support on PlayStation systems in 2012, allowing customers to purchase select games on one console and download the game again on another device without a second purchase. The company has also introduced cross-save and cross-play functionality, letting users to transfer save games and interact across platforms in various other ways.

Nintendo began experimenting with cross-buy support last year, beginning with Squids Odyssey. Two more cross-buy titles (Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tripping Stars and Roll7's OlliOlli) are slated to debut on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop tomorrow. Hopefully more games follow suit.

It's fantastic to see all three major console manufacturers finally embracing this trend.

Elite: Dangerous lands on Xbox One this summer

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 05:30 AM PST

During a talk at the Game Developers Conference, head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced that PC space sim Elite: Dangerous will make its console debut this summer on Xbox One.

Frontier Developments says that "all content added to the PC version by February's Community Goals content update and March's Wings content update" will make it into the console port.

I've stayed away from Elite: Dangerous (and Star Citizen, for that matter) and will continue to do so until they're further along in development. Xbox One, though? Wonder how Elite will translate.

Oh hey, this looks like the final Steam Controller

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 05:15 AM PST

Weird as it might still look, you have to admit that Valve's Steam Controller has come far.

Remember this photo? Or this more recent one? It's like leafing through your worst yearbooks.

Given that I play PC-centric games with a mouse and keyboard and I'm fine with that setup, I don't see much of a need to get one of these controllers, but I am curious to touch those trackpads.

NIS confirms Wii release for Rodea: The Sky Soldier

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 05:00 AM PST

It looks like Rodea: The Sky Soldier will be the Wii's swan song. Today, NIS America confirmed first edition copies of the Wii U version will come equipped with the original Wii prototype.

The aerial action game was announced for Wii in 2010, but never saw a release. Instead, the project was reworked as a 3DS and Wii U title, which is now planned for an autumn launch.

Rodea: The Sky Soldier comes from Sonic programmer Yuji Naka's independent studio Prope. The developer is also responsible for experiences like Let's Tap, Ivy the Kiwi?, and Let's Catch.

It's difficult to imagine anyone wanting to play an inferior rendition of the game, (Has anyone with a Blu-ray player ever used those throw-in DVDs?) but this move is a nice nod to all you collectors out there and anyone who hasn't yet jumped on the Wii U train. This very well could be the final Wii title to ever see an official release. That sort of thing probably deserves a spot on your shelf.

Nintendo's big release schedule for Never Alone, Don't Starve, and lots of other indies

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 04:45 AM PST

Klei's wilderness survival game Don't Starve: Giant Edition is headed to the Wii U eShop this spring with a convenient map viewable on the GamePad screen (or Off-TV play, if you'd rather). Great!

Also cool: E-Line's charming platformer Never Alone will use the controller to show contextual details about the "history, culture, and lives of the Iñupiat people" when it hits Wii U this June.

These are just two of the 30-some independent games coming to the console in 2015. Nintendo has put together a release schedule for those titles as well as the next batch of 3DS eShop games, including HAL Laboratory's minimalistic puzzle-platformer BOXBOY!, viewable below.

Upsilon Circuit's creators lived in a tree fort to help save money

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PST

PAX East is almost here, and from what I've seen, there's going to be more interesting and exciting games at the show than ever before. A lot of these games are exciting because they are fun to play. Upsilon Circuit can't get by that easy, as by design, most people on the planet will never get to play it. Even worse, those who do play it will not likely be able to play for long.

It's a free-to-play game with "true permadeath," meaning that once you die in-game, you'll never be able to play again. The penalties for failure are more severe than in just about any other game ever made. If you play football once and lose, you aren't banned from football forever. The fact that Upsilon Circuit has higher stakes than one of the most dangerous sports in the world definitely says something.

Smash Bros. dev bringing blocky puzzler BOXBOY! to 3DS

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PST

HAL Laboratories (Super Smash Bros., Mother) has been busying itself with a couple Kirby games recently, but it looks like someone over there had an idea for a lil puzzle game and rolled with it.

BOXBOY! (already released on the 3DS eShop in Japan) is minimal outside of its charming animations. It is black, white, and mostly made of squares. You can walk Qbby left and right in an overworld with a Ms. Pac-Man-esque bowtied Qbby trailing behind. Enter doors to start a world, most of which seem to be designed around a particular technique. Five worlds (with around seven levels each) were playable during my GDC demo. There are 17 in total.

Aside from running and jumping, Qbby can bud blocks from his body. Each level gives you a limit to how many blocks you can produce at any given time, while there is also an overall number of blocks you can use on a stage. Getting to the end while collecting one or two black crowns will net you a "perfect" rating (and give you currency to unlock fun extras).

When you start, you can produce one block from your body and usually throw it to use as a step to reach a higher platform. As the levels go on and the block limit gets higher, you use new techniques. One section is themed around using blocks as a hook. That is, you produce three stacked blocks straight up, followed one to the right, forming a hook atop your head. You can then latch that last block onto a high ledge and have Qbby contract up to that latched block like folding in one side of the accordion.

I'm fine with the absentee art style (and Qbby's dumb lil feet as you move the box back and forth), but I never felt stumped throughout the first five worlds. It was more relaxing than puzzling. Maybe that's the point. Or maybe the later worlds will combine the various techniques a bit more, or make it so the limit of blocks you can produce per stage actually feels like a restriction; I never ran out.

Azure Striker Gunvolt gets a New 3DS update, adds more buttons

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 02:30 AM PST

I still go back to Azure Striker Gunvolt from time to time. It's an excellent little platformer and a wonderful ode to the Mega Man ZX series. Developer Inti Creates has just shared update 1.2 is on the way, set to debut on March 5, that will bring a few improvements in tow.

Boss Rush Mode will now be unlocked after completion, the demo will get full save data transfer support (which will debut tomorrow), and a few "small bug fixes." But the biggest update is probably the New 3DS-centric addition, which adds support for the ZL and ZR buttons to change weapons on the fly. If you have a New 3DS you'll also get faster load times.

As previously stated, adding support in for the New 3DS buttons is much simpler than putting in Circle Pad Pro controls, as the latter takes a percentage of the 3DS' processing power.

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest is getting a demo

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PST

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest is coming to Japan, and I couldn't be more excited as a Theatrhythm fan. While there is no announcement of a localization yet for the west, Japan is getting it on March 26, in addition to a newly minted demo that will debut on March 11.

It will feature two songs, one from Dragon Quest III and another from V. If you happen to own a Japanese 3DS, look for it on the eShop next week.

Sling TV gets AMC added to its base package

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 01:30 AM PST

Sling TV is a pretty neat cable-cutting service that's already live on the Amazon Fire TV, Roku 3, and in the coming weeks, the Xbox One. Today, it debuts AMC in its base package, which is still priced at $20 per month.

This is a huge get, as The Walking Dead is one of the biggest shows on TV, and Better Call Saul is fantastic so far. IFC is also being added, which most people will be familiar with by way of Portlandia. On Demand content is "coming soon."

I've contacted Sling TV to inquire about the launch date on Xbox One, as we haven't heard anything other than "soon" in the past few months. If it gets FX, I will 100% cut my cable once HBO Go goes standalone.

Bethesda announces Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, coming this year

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 01:06 AM PST

After a string of questionable franchise entries, Wolfenstein: The New Order was pretty good, and hit it off well critically and commercially. It's smart of Bethesda to capitalize on that success, and that's just what it is doing with Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a new standalone prequel in the series.

It will be developed by MachineGames, and will take place in 1946, featuring classic hero BJ Blazkowicz as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein. There will be two episodes of sorts to the game, "Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves" and "The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs." More of the same is great news.

It will be available on May 5, 2015, digitally for Xbox One, PS4, and PC for $19.99, roughly one year after The New Order's release.

Metal Gear Solid V launch details confirmed, Collector's Edition unveiled

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 12:23 AM PST

After a leak involving the release date for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Konami has confirmed the date this morning -- September 1, 2015 (September 15 for Steam), with a few other details in tow.

Metal Gear Online is name-dropped in particular, which will go live the day of Phantom Pain's launch and is included in the base package. It will feature a "class system" and characters like Ocelot and Snake will make an apperance. Mother Base mode is also reconfirmed, with the ability to play online and raid other bases to steal items.

There will be a "Day 1 Edition" of the game and a Collector's Edition, which are priced at $59.99 on PS4 and Xbox One ($49.99 on Steam, PS3, and Xbox 360) and $99.99 respectively. The former will come with a physical map and a selection of DLC items.

The Collector's Edition will only be available for the PS4 and Xbox One, and will come with a half-scale replica of Snake's Bionic Arm, a collectible SteelBook, a behind the scenes Blu-Ray, the map, and a special box. It'll also ship with more DLC.

Catch the full version breakdown below. Thank God, all of the DLC so far seems to be cosmetic.

Microsoft announces a ton of indie games coming to Xbox, like Shovel Knight

Posted: 04 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PST

Microsoft has just announced a ton of indie games coming to Xbox One, which is good news since it feels like Sony announces one every other day. The biggest game in the lot is probably Shovel Knight, but there are some other gems in there like Cuphead.

It's good to see Microsoft remaining competitive, as it will force Sony and Nintendo to up their games -- in the end, we all win. Sadly, it doesn't seem like the Xbox version of Shovel Knight will have any exclusive content to match Sony's Kratos boss fight.

This Breaking Bad 'inspired' weed game on iOS is just....

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 10:34 PM PST

While scrolling about in the iOS app store I found a game called Breaking Farm -- or as it's known by its other name, "Impending Lawsuit."

The story involves "Weedsenberg," who watches a "famous television series" and gets the idea to start an island paradise in Jamaica -- to grow weed. Intrigued, I booted up the free download, and it's basically Cookie Clicker on weed. The tutorial is roughly 15 seconds, and beyond that, you swipe to earn more money, or just rake it in automatically.

Breaking Farm is serious business, as the developer Ivanovich Games, based in Barcelona, gives us a pretty stark warning on its Apple storefront page: "Everything is this videogamne [sic] is fiction. Don't even think about starting up a business inspired in this game."
