New Nvidia Shield is a $200 Android console

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 02:20 PM PST

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has announced the company's own sort of Ouya/Amazon Fire TV, the "world's first 4K Android TV console," the Tegra X1-powered Nvidia Shield. Not to be confused with Nvidia's recent Nvidia Shield.

It is a thin rectangle and Nvidia is proud that it looks nice "sitting flat or standing on its edge." Also proud that it can run Crysis (so long as there isn't too much going on on screen). It is "twice as powerful" as an Xbox 360.

It will be $200 with a controller included when it launches in May. There are also subscription options for streaming games (like PlayStation Now) using Nvidia's GRID+ system at 1080p and 60 FPS (if you have the reccomended 50mbps internet speed, anyways). You can stream Batman: Arkham Knight using the service at launch. Like Steam Link ($50), you can also use the Shield to stream directly from your (Nvidia-powered) desktop.

Will Bethesda hurry up and announce Fallout 4?

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PST

GDC is here, and as is the case with any big trade show or splashy industry event, I'll be on tenterhooks waiting to hear the one piece of news I care about -- When is Fallout 4 going to happen? For years I've expected the announcement “any day now” while Bethesda remains stubbornly tight lipped with every passing E3 and VGA ceremony. Still, like the child of a deadbeat father, I hold out hope that this time they'll surprise us and come through.

It's important to me because Fallout 3 taught me how to love open-world games. I thought I already did. Games like Oblivion and the GTA series were considered favorites even then. But in retrospect, I had a fondness for those games. An appreciation for them born out of respect to the jaw-dropping technical execution and the brass balls of the teams that designed them. When I actually played them, I was often a stressed out save-scummer, constantly scheming on the best way to tackle the game and maintain a perfect record. It wasn't until Fallout 3 took me, hand-in-irradiated-hand, on a guided tour of its desolate wasteland that I really learned to love.

Valve: Steam Link game-streaming device, controller, free Source 2, and VR in 2015

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 11:45 AM PST

Valve just announced a number of new products for 2015 along with some pricing details. (Leave it to Valve to reveal hardware with dates and pricing at the same time.) This year, the company will release: Steam Link, Steam Machines, a virtual reality headset, and Source 2.

Steam Link is a game-streaming device that allows you to play your Steam library from your PC on any screen in the house at "1080p and 60Hz with low latency." It's launching alongside the Steam Controller in November; both are priced at $49.99.

Steam Machines are also launching this November and will start around the same price as home consoles. Alienware and Falcon Northwest are currently showing off Steam Machines at the Game Developers Conference, but at least a dozen other partners will be selling Steam Machines.

After the news of Unreal Engine 4 and Unity 5 going free, it comes as no shocker that Valve announced the upcoming Source 2 engine will be free to "content developers."

TL;DR: A bunch of things were announced, none of which were Half-Life 3. I wonder how Valve's physics talk at 3pm on 3/3 went?

Wasteland 2 on Xbox One is a pleasant surprise

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 11:15 AM PST

I wouldn't have thought a game like Wasteland 2 would leave its PC roots but if it works, it works. inXile Entertainment is self-publishing its deep, unforgiving turn-based RPG on Xbox One "soon."

The trailer out of this week's Game Developers Conference lists several upgrades:

  • New quirks and perks system
  • New precision strike system
  • Complete art and lighting overhaul
  • Updated character models for all party members
  • New voice-overs for all major speaking parts and CNPCs

What about current players? Tracing back to the last Kickstarter update, inXile says it's "not done yet" with the Steam version of Wasteland 2. The team is moving its code base to the new Unity 5 engine, so besides "...visual improvements, we have quite a few quirky tricks up our sleeves. The character system is getting perked up and will include some new elements to modify gameplay."

Review: Starwhal

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PST

Even though narwhals look like some sort of bastardized version of a dolphin and unicorn, they are actually whales -- hence the name narWHAL. However, the horn that gives most narwhals their distinctive look is mainly associated with males of the species. Sorry, it's a guy thing.

In Starwhal, that tusk is your key to everything. In the game's chaotic and seemingly random moments, paying close attention to your tusk can be your only sign of refuge.

PS4 passes 20 million mark

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 10:30 AM PST

To make sure everyone knew that the PlayStation 4 was in charge of this console generation (so far), Sony humbly announced that the console has sold more than 20.2 million units worldwide as of March 1.

It's still too early to call for most console warriors, but this gen looks to be coming up Sony. It certainly remains to be seen what Microsoft can do to catch up, but at this point it's probably going to take a lot more than price cuts.

Wii U had no comment.

Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide goes all in with hectic co-op action

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 10:15 AM PST

I've long been an admirer of the Warhammer franchise. While a lot of people seem to put more of their attention towards the 40K universe, the high-fantasy setting of the former is so rich and features such a breadth of potential. As such, I was surprised to hear last month that Fatshark is making a new Warhammer title.

During a special hands-on session at GDC, the folks behind Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide showed off their co-op title that'll seek to offer hardcore action within the high-fantasy universe, while giving loot hungry players the urge to explore the street and depths of Ubersreik.

Sony's virtual reality hat Morpheus coming to PlayStation 4 in 2016

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 09:35 AM PST

In the last month or so, invitations to various virtual reality headset demonstrations have made up a huge chunk of my inbox. GDC is into virtual reality.  I worry someone will pull some garish box out of their bag this week, run up to me, stick it on my face and steal my eyes.

Maybe it will be someone from Sony. Maybe even the lovely Shuhei Yoshida himself. PlayStation VP of Publisher & Developer Relations Adam Boyes posted some pictures of Yoshida showing off the latest Morpheus prototype.

This one has a 120hz refresh rate, a 5.7" OLED display (so it's a Vita in your face!), "9 LEDs, <18ms delay, 5.7inch screen, 100 degree FOV." I'll see what these numbers mean in person later this week.

And it's launching in the "first half of 2016." Is this another 3D TV fad, or are you all into the notion of consumer-grade VR?

The wonderful Double Fine Adventure documentary is going free

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PST

Folks who helped crowdfund Broken Age have gotten an up-close look at how Double Fine operates thanks to episodic videos chronicling development of the adventure game.

With 18 episodes down, 2 Player Productions has produced hours upon hours of compelling footage, and now it's being set free: the documentary series will be uploaded to YouTube piece by piece each Tuesday and Thursday, starting today. The first three episodes are up now.

I'm sure I've written this before, but the documentary was the main reason I backed Broken Age. It's phenomenal, insightful, humanzing, and funny. Whenever an email comes in with a new episode, I want to put down what I'm doing (usually work) and take an extra long "lunch break."

Mad Catz' newest peripheral is an actual, living cat

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PST

Mad Catz unveiled its latest gaming peripheral today, the revolutionary C.A.T. PRO X.

The hot new accessory is a small, domestic mammal that can be used to cradle a mobile phone, PlayStation Vita, or other similar device. It's being called the cuddliest gaming peripheral in the world thanks to its flexible chassis and a furry exterior that delivers unprecedented comfort.

The product also includes vermin control functionality. Mad Catz tells us the C.A.T. PRO X will maim small creatures (such as lizards or birds) lurking outside users' homes and then proudly bring the remains indoors to impress owners. No other accessory on the market will do that.

Team Fortress 2sdays: Heisting Gone Wrong

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PST

I’ll make no excuses for my obsession with Payday 2 as of late, and even though Overkill has been doing some questionable things with DLC recently I still have tons of fun. While most people looking at the game will think of it playing out something like Ocean’s 11 or Heat; in reality you'll take on the role of Ben Stiller from Tower Heist. There’s no other feeling like watching an entire plan go to waste because somebody decided to shoot a guard with an unsuppressed weapon, waking up everyone and their grandmother in the process.

Even better are times that you end up having to kill everyone on the map due a “tactical error” by a teammate claiming after the fact that nobody should have noticed that grenade launcher going off. Sometimes that safe you've been drilling for the past few minutes has nothing in it at all, forcing you to carefully attempt to loot everything else in sight. Then every once in a while the moon aligns with the planets and sets into motion some of the most beautiful acts of teamwork ever seen; a heist where everything goes according to plan and you're done in under ten minutes.

For all the frustrations I have with random public players, it’s still a blast to play and even with all the DLC coming out as of late I still love it. One of these Fridays I'll even get around to hosting some for FNF.

On a side note Between 2Fort will officially be returning on the 21st, I won’t spoil any details yet about who the guest it, but rest assured it’s the biggest guest we’ve had yet.

Also don’t forget that we are still looking for people to help with the PC FNF cblogs. It’s a super easy thing and you won’t be alone, I sometimes might not forget to help every other week. If you’re interested hit up Mike or Swishiee for the details.

Reaper of Souls and Heart of the Swarm half off at Best Buy

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PST

Deals on Blizzard games are always a rarity (and they usually happen ages after said titles have been released). This week though, Best Buy has select Blizzard titles on sale 50% off.

If you still haven't tried out Diablo III: Reaper of Souls or StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, they are both at lowest ever price for PC and select consoles.

Beyond the Blizzard titles, a couple of other relatively recent releases are on the price chopping block too, with a fairly big sale on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor down to a mere $19.99

Oxenfree is bringing some flair to new-school adventure games

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PST

Last year a group of former Telltale and Disney employees came together to form Night School Studio. At GDC this morning, the indie developer unveiled its first project, "supernatural teen thriller" Oxenfree.

The studio's Telltale DNA is readily apparent from the trailer, with a focus on giving the player dialogue options and delivering an intriguing narrative. I'm really digging the vibrant, jade-heavy palette, and the two-dimensional gameplay allows for a lot of high quality artwork to serve as the backdrop. Perhaps that's the Disney influence in practice.

Oxenfree is set to release some time this year. No platforms have been confirmed, nor is it known if this will be release episodically or traditionally.

Mega64 does Dark Dreams Don't Die

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PST

The longer we go without a second season of Dark Dreams Don't Die, the more I realize how much I genuinely connected with Swery65's strange adventure game. What a tragedy it would be for this story to go unfinished. I need resolution, especially after seeing some of the wild fan theories.

While I wait (potentially forever), the guys at Mega64 recreated the look and feel of D4 for a video.

You're going to be totally lost if you haven't played it yet, but the skit should still be entertaining.

Capcom listened! Local co-op added to Resident Evil: Revelations 2 for PC

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 06:30 AM PST

There was drama last week surrounding the lack of splitscreen cooperative play in the Campaign and Raid Mode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 for PC -- not only because that's a nice feature to have, but because Capcom "mistakenly" listed it in the product description on Steam. Whoops.

The company has since come back with an unexpectedly quick resolution. Local co-op can now be patched in (install instructions here), though the feature is in beta. There are known issues. "For anyone who isn't satisfied with this option, refunds are available through Steam," says Capcom.

I'm still trying to decide if I should get into Revelations 2 for a single episode, or if it's best to commit to the full package. Also, which platform to go with. This update has me leaning toward PC.

Escalator Pitch: Would you shell out for Sonic 2?

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 06:00 AM PST

Indie developers make some cool as heck games, but they're not always so great at selling them. We want to them work on their pitch game until they're at Bumgarner levels and we want to take advantage of the the horrible, horrible GDC elevators that get gummed up with folks who don't know you're supposed to walk on the left, stand on the right.

First up is Nathan John, who is working on StandPoint. He's pitching Sonic 2. Would you buy it?

OlliOlli 2, Valiant Hearts, Oddworld free via PS Plus

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 05:45 AM PST

[Update: The PlayStation Blog and its European sister-site have confirmed thew new additions. Meanwhile, eagle-eyed Twitter user @thebiglouie spotted Dishonored in the latter article's URL, suggesting Bethesda Softworks' stealth game was initially planned as one of this month's free games at some point. It looks like plans changed, which very well might be the reason why we didn't hear anything about this month's free games until the last minute.]

Sony has been acting weird about this month's PlayStation Plus lineup, refusing to discuss which titles are joining the Instant Game Collection today. It's a strange development, since the company usually gives subscribers a heads up on what to expect well in advance.

Luckily, Internet sleuths poking around the PlayStation Store have discovered what the electronics giant seems so hesitant to divulge. Here's everything Plus members can download today:

Unity 5 shows how to properly sell a game engine

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 05:30 AM PST

Epic unveiled its new free-to-use (with eventual royalties) pricing model for Unreal Engine 4 this week during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, while Unity launched the new iteration of its engine, Unity 5, with a fine mustachioed gentleman chilling on a couch.

Well done, Unity.

The pricing and features for the new engine are broken down here. In short: Unity 5 Personal Edition is free (with no royalties) for "professional developers, indies, hobbyists, and studios with revenue under $100,000 and funding under $100,000"; Unity 5 Professional Edition is sticking with a $75 per month subscription fee, or $1,500 for a perpetual license. Love this competition.

Review: Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 05:00 AM PST

Like many games of its type, Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines features a tiny graphic in its text boxes to remind players they can press a button to advance to the next line. Usually the graphic is of an X or O button pressing itself, but Oreshika's is of a little weasel pushing a button with its nose.

It's animated, and viewed from the side the little weasel can also look just like a person, sitting on their knees Japanese-style, bowing respectfully, over and over. That behavior's almost emblematic of the game's attitude, as it's so eager to let players do what they like (sometimes to their own detriment) that it almost comes off as desperate.

But hey, they're gonna be dead soon anyway, so perhaps some deference is warranted.

Mad Max is releasing the same week as MGS V

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 04:30 AM PST

How unfortunate. Warner Bros. and Avalanche Studios announced the release date for Mad Max on PC, PS4, and Xbox One: September 1 in North America, the same as Metal Gear Solid V, and September 4 in the United Kingdom. Also, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions have been canceled.

As much as I love the Mad Max series, this game is already overshadowed in my mind by the upcoming film, Fury Road (that trailer!), and Avalanche's other in-development title, Just Cause 3.

And now MGS V? Dang.

HBO Go is now available on PS4

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 04:15 AM PST

The Xbox One got HBO Go a few months back, and now it's the PS4's turn to join the party. Starting today, you can access the app on Sony's newest console. Just keep in mind that it still needs a cable subscription for now -- no word on when the standalone service is coming.

I generally watch a lot of HBO -- with some of my favorites like Boardwalk Empire concluded, I catch Girls, Looking, Togetherness, and John Oliver on Sundays. True Detective is coming up, and that show everyone and their grandma likes with a guy named Hodor is dropping in April too.

Suda51: No More Heroes almost ended with Travis Touchdown's death

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PST

Edge recently interviewed Goichi "Suda51" Suda about the making of No More Heroes, which was coincidentally timed quite nicely with my own article about the game a few days ago. The interview covered Suda51's inspirations for creating No More Heroes, the time constraints which resulted in a less-than-stellar hub world and a ditched boss fight, and the game's surprising popularity outside of Japan.

But perhaps the most intriguing part of the interview was the revelation that they originally planned to end the first game with Travis's death. Sylvia would have shot him after his final ranked match, but in the end, they decided her deadly charm was enough to keep him under control.

I wonder what would have become of the franchise had they followed through with their original idea? Maybe we would have never gotten the sequel. Of course, they could have still made a sequel starring a different character such as Henry Cooldown or Shinobu, both of whom were playable for brief portions of Desperate Struggle, but who knows how popular that idea would have been. I, for one, would love to play a No More Heroes game centered around Shinobu; she was awesome. No More Heroes 3, anyone?

Let's take September off to play Metal Gear Solid V

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 03:45 AM PST

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will release worldwide on September 1, 2015.

The news is attached to an IGN video that was supposed to go up tomorrow, but NeoGAF found a working URL for the it earlier today. NeoGAF sees all, and the file has since been spread around.

"I always say 'this will be my last Metal Gear.' But the games in the series that I've personally designed and produced -- Metal Gear on MSX, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, 4, and Peace Walker, and now Metal Gear Solid V -- are what constitute a single Metal Gear saga. With Metal Gear Solid V, I'm finally closing the loop on that saga. In that sense, this will be the final Metal Gear Solid. Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, to me, this is the last Metal Gear."

Sure sounds like the same old Hideo Kojima.

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition may be getting a PC release

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 03:30 AM PST

It was easy to miss the announcement for the PS4 and Xbox One version of Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition amidst the DmC re-release, but it happened. We don't know a whole lot about what the Special Edition actually entails, but we do have a teaser image that involves Vergil, which is great news for fans of the character.

According to a German USK board rating we may also be getting it for the PC, which would be even better news. Devil May Cry 4 may have had some issues, but it was a tip-top action game with a solid combat foundation.

Have you experienced the trainwreck that is Rockman Xover yet? The free mobile game may not be available in the west, but it's still the only surviving and active Mega Man game -- that is, until the end of this month when it shuts down.

If you're curious, Capcom Unity member Appleforce has a full guide available that teaches you how to make a Japanese iTunes account and download the game.

While the game may not be what we wanted, it spawned some awesome new characters and art.

Developer Yacht Club Games has teased more Plague of Shadows news by way of its Kickstarter page, and it will be playable at PAX East. According to Yacht Club it's coming "soon." They also remind us that the base game will be Cross-Save and Cross-Buy on PS3, PS4, and Vita.

Mankind has expanded throughout the galaxy, having come together under one government, a "managed" democracy. And if you don't like it, expect them to spread a whole lot of ordinance instead.

LA Cops wants you to play with yourself on March 13

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 01:30 AM PST

Alasdair told us about his time with LA Cops late last year, detailing his failures as an American law enforcement official. For those averse to Early Access, it will be available to play in just ten days. The "one-person co-op" strategy shooter is set to release on PC and Xbox One on March 13, and to commemorate the occasion, publisher Team17 released the trailer above.

It was a little difficult to get a feel for how the game plays with just Ali D's description, but it also seems like the video alone leaves out some key details. Only taken together does it become clear what makes LA Cops unique: players are controlling one officer directly and the other indirectly, but must make good use of that teamwork through cover fire, pincer maneuvers, and simultaneous takedowns in order to be successful.

A complete breakdown of all of Resident Evil: Revelations 2's DLC

Resident Evil Revelations 2 is halfway done with its episodic release schedule, and it's already confused a ton of people. At the request of a ton of readers, I've broken down everything that Capcom has planned so far for the game.

It's not that bad in terms of pricing if you enjoy the series' Raid Mode (Mercenaries reborn) -- I've gotten at least 40 hours of playtime from the first $6 episode so far.

ArenaNet: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns 'is like Metroid and Zelda slammed together'

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 12:01 AM PST

Guild Wars 2 is one of the most accessible MMOs ever made. Eschewing the Holy Trinity of class builds, you can basically pick any character you want and still fulfill a role in any group. Everyone can heal, and everyone can contribute in some way.

As a result of that design however, a lot of opportunities for advanced tactics fell by the wayside, and the endgame was too simplistic to keep everyone interested. Can the upcoming Heart of Thorns expansion rectify that problem?

I had some time to talk to lead designer Colin Johanson and figure out just that.

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns seeks to redefine MMO endgame progression

Posted: 03 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PST

Guild Wars 2 is an ambitious project. While ArenaNet's initial offering of Guild Wars was more of a social dungeon crawler than an MMO (the company called it a CORPG, or competitive online role-playing game), the sequel was a bonafide massive experience.

The kicker? ArenaNet was still able to cut out the subscription fee, effectively making Guild Wars 2 buy-to-play and allowing players to return at any time.

Here we are over two years later with the Heart of Thorns expansion on the horizon, and the developer continues to find ways to innovate.

No more file size limit for Skyrim mods on Steam Workshop

Posted: 02 Mar 2015 11:30 PM PST

Bethesda will be removing the 100MB file size limitation from Steam Workshop mods in an upcoming patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.  Finally, all those gorgeous gigantic textures can be installed from Steam itself, instead of from a third-party application. Fans of Nexus Mod Manager need not fear though. In the comments of the blog Bethesda stated that the new patch shouldn't interfere with the popular solution for installing and updating mods.

The Creation Kit will also be receiving an update to support unlimited sized mods. The way the new system will work is that the Skyrim launcher will not longer download mods from the Steam Workshop. Steam itself will download and place the mods in the correct location and the Skyrim launcher will update the .esm load order after the download is complete.

Bethesda has not yet released a solid release date for general release of the patch. However, it's currently in beta testing and if you follow the instructions on the source post, you can check it out yourself now.

New Xenoblade Chronicles 3D trailer released titled 'Heir to the Monado'

Posted: 02 Mar 2015 11:00 PM PST

Nintendo has dropped a new trailer for next month's Xenoblade Chronicles 3D entitled "Heir to the Monado." It features a flashback to when Shulk acquired the mythical sword Monado as well as a few cinematics and battle scenes.

You can really see the improved CPU of the New Nintendo 3DS showcased here. This may be the best looking game on the handheld to date, and the action on-screen all seemed to flow smoothly. I also can't wait to see how the improved super-stable 3D looks on a game designed specifically for the new model.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will launch April 2 in the U.K. for £34.99 and the U.S. April 10 for $39.99.

3D Realms' Bombshell returns with a tiny bit more hair

Posted: 02 Mar 2015 10:00 PM PST

Last May I broke the news about 3D Realms' upcoming Bombshell, and the typical '90s-esque trailer was decidedly light on gameplay but generous with clichéd teaser elements.

Now there's a proper trailer out to dissect and pick apart and it looks like Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison herself has grown a little more hair than when we last saw her. She still looks like she desperately wants to DJ from her MacBook at a dimly-lit coffee shop, but she also has a really awesome mechanical arm that looks like it'll play an interesting role in the story.

Rather than being a straight-up shooter, Bombshell is actually an isometric ARPG. It also features a gaggle of aliens headed for an ass-whoopin' from ol' Shelly herself. You'll be able to upgrade her arm using specific ability trees (as expected) and supposedly utilize first-person shooter controls to take care of business. I gave the trailer a quick peek, as I was initially excited about Bombshell when I covered it last year, but now that I see it in action it's hard to say whether or not I'm still interested.

I suppose I'm as interested as I can be while eating cold fries and pretzel bun cheeseburger sliders from Beef O'Brady's in my living room at 6 AM, but the isometric view gives me pause. And I'm sure Shelly is your typical everyday lady-palette-swap-of-a-soldier or whatever, but hey -- I'm down. I can't turn down a 3D Realms game, after all.

Bombshell is headed out sometime this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

"Own More and Be More" is EA's dystopian-toned tagline for its unveiling of Battlefield Hardline Premium. In addition to the £44.00/$59.99 price for the base game (£59.99/$69.99 for the "deluxe" version), you can slap down an additional £44.00/$59.99 to unlock exclusive things that should have been included anyway.

Review: Resident Evil: Revelations 2: Episode 2

I didn't expect to enjoy the first episode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 as much as I did. It was nice to see Barry and Claire back in action, and the co-op elements were implemented in a neat asynchronous manner. Not to mention the killer Raid Mode that might be the best iteration yet.

The good times keep rolling in Episode 2 with a great atmosphere, more Raid levels, and an compelling-enough narrative.
