You Dtoiders have been on an absolute tear lately! Not only are you kicking out awesome new community projects at breakneck speeds, but you're doing so with an enthusiasm and positivity that I haven't seen in years. Seriously, I am so f*cking proud of you all I just want to pick you up and keep squeezing you forever! (But I won't, because we all know how Of Mice and Men ends.)

Anyway, you're doing a great job, and I hope you keep it up! Here's some highlights from the last month.

Reminder: tonight is your last night to get your free Latios or Latias in Pokemon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PST

You can grab a free Latios or Latias (whatever your version doesn't have) in Pokemon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire right now. The catch? You have to do it right now before the promotion ends sometime tonight.

All you have to do is start your game up, hit "Mystery Gift," then "Receive Gift," then "Get with Code." Enter "2015LATIOSLATIAS" (or "POKEMON380381" in Europe) and you're good! You'll obtain an EON ticket (pick it up at your local Pokemon Center), which you can use at Petalburg Gym.

That's it! Note that you can get your ticket through other means, and if you already got one before, it won't work.

HTC Vive VR headset announced in partnership with Valve

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PST

HTC has announced they are partnering with Valve on a VR headset, revealed today as the Vive. The Vive will be "powered by Steam VR," which seems to be a software solution created by Valve for VR headsets. It is unclear at this time if Steam VR will support other devices or just the Vive.

The Vive will have dual 1200 x 1080 screens; that is a lot of pixels for each eye! The screens will also run at 90 frames per second and are said to "display photorealistic imagery." The headset also works with base stations that can track users in a 15 x 15 foot space. For comparison, the current version of the Oculus Rift is 900 x 1080 and 75 frames per second. Audio-wise, you'll have to plug in your own headphones to the dedicated jack, so it will be up to you to decide how "next-gen" your sound experience will be. Thankfully, the Vive package is a little more generous on the controller front. It comes with two, one for each hand.

No games have been officially announced supporting the Vive, but the official site points to the website for The Gallery Six ElementsThe Gallery's site states it is being released "when VR hardware goes public," and that the Vive is aiming to be in consumer hands this holiday season. Check out the opening sequence for The Gallery below, and just imagine what the future holds!

Watch me die in Castle in the Darkness on Beard View Live

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PST

Hey Beard View fans, I'll be playing Castle in the Darkness over at our Twitch channel at 6:30 pm Eastern / 3:30 pm Pacific. You can obviously watch it embedded below, but I encourage to come join the chat and keep me company!

Castle in the Darkness is one of my favorite games in a long time; it has throwbacks to so many great NES games as well as one of the best chiptune soundtracks to grace my ears. Cave Story fans may want to check it out also, as Nicalis published the game and you might see a cameo of a certain rectangular character.

Sonic Team lead plans to continue making Sonic for consoles

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PST

Recently, there have been rumors going around that Sega would be leaving the console market and only releasing games for mobile devices. Takashi Iizuka, the Sonic Team lead, put that rumor to rest in an interview with 4gamer stating, "Personally, I don’t plan to stop Sonic for home-video game consoles. Don’t worry about them! And enjoy!"

So fear not, Sonic fans; there will still be games for you to play and enjoy in the future. Personally, I'm hoping for a Sonic Boom sequel. Just kidding

New Dj CUTMAN album of remixed videogame music out now

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PST

Web musician Dj CUTMAN has created a ton of awesome remixes of videogame music over the years. Today, he released his newest album, Volume III, compiling selected works from 2012-2015. There's a lot of great stuff in here, remixing music from a range of games, including Bravely Default, Super Mario 3D World, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and more.

My favorite tracks are the ones from Link's Awakening, Shovel Knight, and Final Fantasy. The Zelda dungeon theme is one of my favorite songs from the NES, so I always love hearing it reused and remixed in various ways. And I'll always be down for some Shovel Knight music!

The album is available on Bandcamp, where you're free to name your own price.

Sup Holmes finds out why kitty loves robot with Robot Loves Kitty

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 05:30 AM PST

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

[Update: Thanks to Calvin and Alix for being on the show! The rerun will be up soon. In the meantime, here's some gameplay form Upsilon Circuit.]

Today on Sup Holmes we welcome the team from Robot Loves Kitty (also known as Kitty Loves Robot) to the program. They're probably best known for Legend of Dungeon, but their Mario-inspired Tiny Plumbers and the upcoming "What the heck is lovechild of Ronald Reagan and Max Headroom doing in this game" game Upsilon Circuit are nothing to shake a stick at either. We'll probably be spending a lot of time talking about that one, as it's doing a lot of things that have never been done in a game before. Probably the closest any other game has come is Twitch Plays Pokemon, or maybe #IDARB. You'll have to watch the show to see what I mean.

The stream starts at 4pm EST! We hope to see you there!

Magnetic love in the digital domain

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PST

[Sometimes great Cblogs come from the community. Sometimes, they come from the staff. And sometimes, they come from community members who have since become staff, like this one from Stevil/Stephen Turner! --Mr Andy Dixon]

So vinyl came back in a big way, bringing cassette tapes along for the ride. And while vinyl was predominantly brought back to combat piracy through desirable nostalgia, cassettes have been more of a cheap novelty. They were never great, audio-wise, and judging from the warbled, underwater sounds of punk from my kitchen, they haven’t really improved at all. That’s not to say they don’t have value, though, and I’d be willing to bet that their resurgence in the virtual domain isn’t as superficial as we’d like to think.

What sets tape apart from vinyl is personalization. Mixtapes were a huge part of a late 20s/early 30-somethings life and it’s this age bracket that influences videogames today, either through developer or player. Mixtapes essentially boiled down to connection, discovery, care, and ultimately knowledge; expression and flaunting in equal measure, between lovers and friends. It’s a projection of the self on to magnetic tape, usually through the sounds of others. And this form of expression, this simple way of sharing personalities, has been seeping into videogames more and more, as both players and developers grow older and demand more subtly in their stories.

Cibele is a game about love, sex, and the Internet

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PST

Nina Freeman (How Do You Do It?, Space Dad) is the first and only person to talk to me at length about how Smash Bros. could be a metaphor for an orgy. You can watch her full Sup Holmes episode here. We talk about magical girls and stuff.

Nina's next game is called Cibele, "...a game about love, sex, and the Internet. You play as a girl who's becoming close with a boy she met in an online game. Her relationship with him heats up, becoming more and more intimate with each phone call and private chat, until the two decide to meet up in real life to have sex."

Despite the spoilers, that's pretty brilliant description. This kind of thing happens all the time, but people don't often talk about it, let alone make a game about it. If anything, it's strange that it's taken this long for it to happen.

Obscure Video Games: Space Fishermen

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PST

Fishing games have been around a long time. The earliest one I remember playing is Activision's 1980 Fishing Derby for the Atari 2600. Despite its simplicity, it was great. Since then there have been tons more fishing titles, but only a few have really tried experimenting with the genre. One such example is 2002's Space Fishermen for PlayStation 2, a collaboration between a small Japanese developer by the name of Land Ho! and Spumco (the creators of Ren & Stimpy).

The game begins with a choice of three characters:

  • Diver - a bodybuilder wearing nothing but a diver's helmet and a loincloth
  • Masabo - a goofy Stimpy-lookalike
  • Swallow - a blue woman with extremely long hair

You start out in a hub world where you can talk to people, buy stuff, and choose your fishing site. Everything is in Japanese, so I had to fumble around a bit before I could get to the action, but if you need help there are YouTube videos which illustrate the process.

Fishing takes place on small planet-like areas. Your character rides a hoverboard around the perimeter of the water, and shoots electricity from their rod/gun thing. Wait for yellow circles to appear and hook the fish with the circle button. Then reel it in by rotating the right stick while pulling the left stick in the opposite direction of the fish's movement. It's a little awkward to do all this simultaneously, but eventually I got used to it.

The "fish" you catch are just as bizarre as the characters. So far I've seen a baseball octopus, a clam frog, and a living tin can. Each of the approximately 150 species has a type which determines what kind of lure they like to eat. For example, an "Animal" type fish will go for a "Shell" type lure. It's somewhat like Pokémon in that way, and the system adds a little strategy to the game.

Space Fishermen never saw a release outside Japan, but if you have the means to play it then I say give it a shot. You just might get hooked.
