Popular bluffing card game Coup will be a videogame soon Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST When people talk about good games to ease newbies into board games, The Resistance is one that gets brought up often. Heck, we have even played a few games of it on our forums. It took the hidden team aspect of Werewolf, trashed the player elimination aspect, and put a greater focus on deduction. Coup is a newer game set in the same universe, but instead of a hidden team game, it is a free-for-all of deception and deduction. Both games have their strengths, and one of the newest points for Coup is that it will soon be available in videogame form. The small development team easily surpassed the initial Kickstarter goal of $5,000, currently sitting at an almost 50% surplus with two weeks left in the campaign. With the Kickstarter success, it will definitely be made for iOS devices. Android and PC are listed as stretch goals at a lofty $100,000, but the team wants to explore those options even without the additional funding. For those left out in the cold by the timed exclusivity, I can still recommend the tabletop version. It's relatively inexpensive, and there is something so satisfying about lying to your friends and getting away with it.
Doujin fighter Dynamite Bomb launches next week Posted: 09 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST Dynamite Bomb is coming to Playism's western storefront next Tuesday, February 17. The fighting game from doujin circle Light Green 8 is a combo-heavy experience where standard attacks don't seem to inflict much damage. Beyond its simplistic appearance, there are a few intriguing wrinkles here, like freezing and poising attacks reminiscent of status ailments in RPGs. It's not pretty, but maybe it's worth a look if you're in the market for something new toy around with. Playism [Twitter]
| Devious smile: 'Mishaps' can occur in RollerCoaster Tycoon World Posted: 09 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Pipeworks is promising footage of RollerCoaster Tycoon World soon, presumably on or around the Game Developers Conference early next month. I look forward to seeing that, skeptical as I still am about the game. Until then, here's a bunch of words describing its coasters. Highlights:
There's a short Q&A on the blog, too. Someone asked the question I was most concerned about, which is, "Will there be coaster destruction of the possibility for 'mishaps?'" You bet. "Be careful not to build something too crazy or your peeps might have a rough time staying in their seats as the coaster goes around that bend," responded Pipeworks. Hehehe. It'd be swell if RCT World and Frontier's roller coaster game turn out okay. It's been too long. |
Sword fight! A two-man team made this impressive 3D brawler Posted: 09 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST Strength of the Sword Ultimate is a bad, bland name for a good looking 3D action game. This two-man project is actually an enhanced version of Strength of the Sword 3, which came to PS3 in 2013. It also gets a bit more naming credit because the "3" is a joke and there is no 1 or 2. I'm down with that. Anyways, it means you know these two can deliver on the project, which is seeking a modest sum on Kickstarter. Additions include competitive multiplayer, co-op, polished up singleplayer, and a cool-sounding Dark Mode where stringing PvP wins together has you fight challenging Dark Swordsmen. Beating enough of them lets you enter matches as the powerful Dark Swordsman, whose powers are tutorial-free and need to be discovered. Great trailer. Great, hand-drawn pitch page (that artwork is so endearing). Cool additions to an already-finished game. Modest funding goal. This is a good project. Strength of the Sword Ultimate is headed to PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), with stretch goals that could lead to releases on: PS3 and Xbox One; Vita; and Wii U.
Seaworthy: It's like FTL, but with pirates Posted: 09 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST I always wanted to play a more brutal game centered on pirates, but as the years went by I was continually disappointed. Sid Meier’s Pirates was an interesting ride, but it was too lighthearted for me. Seaworthy, a real-time strategy title that features pixelated pirates, looks like it’s going to go a long way in delivering that brutality I’ve been looking for. Right now it’s on Kickstarter, and while there’s plenty of Kickstarter-based titles that I balk at, this one looks like it could actually be worth getting into. It’s supposed to be a clever mixture of FTL and Sid Meier’s Pirates, coincidentally, where you command your crew as you see fit, take part in battles, recruit new pirates to hop aboard your ship, and more. Looks like it’s probably going to be right up my alley. Or would that be galley? Seaworthy’s alpha build is coming out before the end of 2015, with Early Access soon after. It remains to be seen if it’ll be worth picking up, but I’m pretty interested just from the trailer alone. [Via Rock, Paper, Shotgun]
Critic Anita Sarkeesian immortalized as TowerFall alternate archer Posted: 09 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST TowerFall Ascension is getting a big expansion, Dark World, sometime this spring. With it comes 10 new archers, alternates of the existing colors. The ghastly, piratical red alternate was revealed last year and four new archers have been revealed today, including a blue archer alt modeled after Tropes vs. Women in Video Games host Anita Sarkeesian. "Anita’s work has been an inspiration to the TowerFall team. Her 'Tropes vs. Women in Games' video series gave us a valuable new lens through which to assess our character designs. TowerFall is about bringing people together, so it’s vitally important that the cast of playable characters makes everyone feel invited to join in." Pretty cool. Also, now I just really want to see my likeness in TowerFall style. God I would be so damn cute. You can see the other four alts here. Vigilante Mask is pretty sweet. The last five will be unveiled, "in the coming weeks." Also, TowerFall is fun as hell. If you've got some friends, you should pick it up.
Gush about things you love this month Posted: 09 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST [This month's Blogger Wanted comes from Luna Sy and is all about love and video games!] This is the month of February. This is the month of ♥ L ♥ O ♥ V ♥ E ♥, and it's time to celebrate that.
| Persona 5 tidbits: Coffee shop living, Ghost in the Shell studio, and Arsene Posted: 09 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Persona 5, the only game that matters, got a proper trailer last week that managed to live up to and surpass some lofty expectations. We know a bit more about what we were shown now, too, thanks to a Famitsu piece covered by Sokuho@Hokanko and picked up by Gematsu. The protagonist's persona is Arsene. It fits the burglary motif, as it's a nod to the classic French gentleman thief character Arsène Lupin. Or, more closely, Japan's Lupin III, whose canonical lineage stems from the French original. The tousled hair protagonist is a second year high school student living just outside the city at his parents' friends' coffee shop and, unlike in Persona 3 and 4, he has his own problem to deal with rather than just being the town fixer. On the gameplay side, guns are back as ranged weapons. All the characters have their own distinct gun, but, like Evokers, they're not actual guns. They are used for combat, though. There are also some not-randomly-generated dungeon areas with their own "gimmicks." Think the flashy stealth cover bit from the trailer. That was actually suggested by the anime director. The 2D cutscenes are being done by Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Kick-Heart). The cobbled together dungeons will return, though, along with turn-based combat that's a bit different from past battle mechanics. Also the cat can transform. Give me this game. | Failed GTA attack sums up my experience piloting jets in videogames Posted: 09 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST You might think that a helicopter peacefully drifting along in Grand Theft Auto Online would be an easy target for a fighter jet, but some of us aren't so skilled at flying these things. Poor MrSmileyHat69. I know your pain. [Via reddit] |
Lonely Valentine's Day? PS4 online multiplayer free this weekend Posted: 09 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST PlayStation Plus, what with its 11 million users, was an effective long con when it comes to making people feel okay with not-so-suddenly having to fork over cash for multiplayer privileges ("I'm already subscribed anyway..."). There's always room for more customers, though, especially on a social-loneliness inducing "holiday" like Valentine's Day. Yes, come here, the PlayStation (TM) loves you. Seriously, drug dealing 101 right here: "Get a taste of the action, without opening your wallet." Just a taste. PlayStation Plus multiplayer open weekend kicks off this Friday [PlayStation Blog]
Evolve sure has a lot of skin DLC at launch Posted: 09 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST Evolve is nearly upon us, and a few of us have access to the game's pre-launch servers -- expect some impressions soon and a full review after we've tested the full version. When Evolve launches tomorrow, it will arrive with a fair bit of skin DLC to go with it. While all of it is optional, purchasing the bundles for everything day-one adds up to $60.89, not including the $24.99 Season Pass that nets you three exclusive skins. Take a look at the gallery below to get an idea of what to expect. I was confused enough by the pre-order situation, but at least it wasn't as bad as Watch Dogs.
Kirby ad makes curses look adorable and pleasant Posted: 09 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Curses aren't anything to scoff at. Anyone that's played Castlevania II: Simon's Quest knows that. So do Chicago Cubs fans, all too well. But, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse makes jinxing hijinks look so tolerable. Maybe we need to add a caveat: If a hex hogs an entire spectrum of light, chances are it'll be an endearing form of voodoo. Somehow making curses pleasant is a wicked form of sorcery that we shouldn't even try to comprehend.
Development on new BioWare IP Shadow Realms ceased Posted: 09 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST Shadow Realms had a very cool idea going for it. The tabletop RPG-inspired, four versus one gameplay reminded me of board games like Descent or Level 7 [Omega Protocol]. The modern fantasy setting seemed like a nice break from the typical medieval environment. The BioWare pedigree got my hopes up for something great. Alas, it was not meant to be. Its fate seemed shaky last month, with some sources suggesting that it would be canceled while others said it was being rebooted. Now, the ambiguity is gone. In a blog post on ShadowRealms.com, BioWare Austin General Manager Jeff Hickman announced that the team "would not move forward with development" on the title. Not all is lost for BioWare fans. The team that was working on Shadow Realms is set to continue working on other RPG staples, like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Still, it's a bummer for those who were looking forward to something new. An Important Update on Shadow Realms [ShadowRealms.com]
Worlds Adrift has open-world swinging, flying ships Posted: 09 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST The thought of harvesting more trees and crafting more trinkets is unappealing, but I'll put up with those mechanics if it means getting to swing around in an open world. This is Worlds Adrift, an adventure game from Surgeon Simulator and I am Bread maker Bossa Studios. If it isn't obvious, what's shown in the footage here is far from finished but, goodness, swinging is already looking like a blast even in this crude environment. Now imagine that plus airships. New gameplay footage! [Worlds Adrift]
Good start, Monday: Splatoon's cat has a bow tie Posted: 09 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST What's a "Splatoon cat"? Sifting through my email this morning for gems to share with you, my eyes darted straight to one from Holmes with that subject line. Whatever it is, I'm in. As translated by NeoGAF user StreetsAhead, the cat's name is Judge, which is fitting since "he has the ability to instantly distinguish the status of the entire turf war field," and also judges the round's winners and losers. If more referees looked like this, we wouldn't get so upset at bad calls. The developers have been posting regular updates on Twitter, including this recent picture of that tempura guy (aka Crusty Sean, the proprietor of Shrimp Kicks). What fantastic characters. I'm convinced Splatoon is one of the best things Nintendo has cooking. [Via Go Nintendo]
Shelter 2 dips its adorable little lynx toes into March Posted: 09 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Despite the typical Portland bleakness, I'm all warm and fuzzy after rewatching this Cuteness in Shelter 2 video Steven posted the other week. Those lynx cubs had better not die young. We've been saying February for months now, but the game's release date has shifted back, if only slightly, to March 9, 2015. The title is content complete, according to Might and Delight. "We are currently polishing it and making sure its as good as can be. A lot of interesting features has been added this last sprint and hope that our fans will understand and forgive the delay!" Pre-purchasing for Shelter 2 opens February 25 and doing so includes bonuses: a copy of the soundtrack by Retro Family (listen to the theme song here) and a "unique version of the Mother Lynx based on the Iberian Lynx (not native to the Taiga biome where the game takes place)."
The only game about mechanical wallabies you have to pay attention to this year Posted: 09 Feb 2015 06:15 AM PST Five Nights at Freddy's sort of has a monopoly on mechanical animals in the gaming space right now, but there's an up-and-coming title that will give it a run for its money, albeit in a very different way. That game is Mekazoo, and it's after an audience that seeks thrills from platforming prowess rather than being scared silly. Mekazoo, which is being developed by The Good Mood Creators, is a two-dimensional platformer in a three-dimensional world. It follows an armadillo as he sets off to free his friends from an insectoid army. His pals -- a frog, wallaby, panda, and pelican -- have been turned into giant bosses, and once beaten, join his side. Judging by the newest trailer, Mekazoo prioritizes free-flowing platforming throughout gorgeous environments. The different animals have unique abilities, which allow them to access new areas. They can be switched out on-the-fly, adding a bit of a problem-solving component to the experience. Mekazoo will roll, hop, and climb its way onto PC, PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One. It's currently scheduled for a quarter four 2015 release.
This Pokémon plate belongs in a museum (and is now in one) Posted: 09 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Very dang good artist (and current Firewatch art director) Olly Moss, whose work we routinely enjoy, made these pixel art Willow plates a while back. These classically-inspired works are now on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London if you want to give them a gander in person and also are in London. If you are not in London or don't like fine plates, maybe peep some of Moss' other work.
Yatagarasu AoC hits Japanese arcades this week Posted: 09 Feb 2015 05:45 AM PST Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm launches in Japanese arcades Thursday, Taito has announced. Meanwhile, the doujin fighting game's long-awaited PC release still remains a work in progress. "The timing of the NESiCAxLive release is one year later than originally planned," Shiza shares via PDW: Hotapen's dev blog. "But it is a huge milestone for the Yatagarasu development team and it is in large part thanks to the players who have supported and contributed to Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm to date. We are sincerely grateful to you all." The studio is focused on finalizing the PC version, but will not commit to a specific launch date. Perhaps that's for the best, considering the title has already missed multiple release windows. Yatagarasu AoC Developer Diary [PDW: Hotapen, NESiCA]
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 makes Gekko Moriah playable Posted: 09 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST Bandai Namco is showing off more One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 footage, and hot damn does it look great. In addition to some new zones and characters, you'll also see the newly playable Gekko Moriah in action. He's...really weird. It's due in March on the PS3, PS4, and Vita in Japan, with a summer release in the US, and a "TBA 2015" date for Europe.
| Resident Evil HD broke all sorts of sales records Posted: 09 Feb 2015 05:15 AM PST Given how much cash they bring in, it's tough to fault publishers for continually focusing on gussying up beloved titles instead of moving forward with new games. Resident Evil HD is just the latest example, as plenty were eager to download the remastered survival horror classic. Capcom released a statement this morning heralding Resident Evil HD Remaster as the fastest selling digital title in the company's history. That's quite the prestigious award for the masterpiece's mantle, even if it was likely bolstered due to its sheer accessibility (the game's available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One). However, Capcom isn't the only company singing Resident Evil's praises. PlayStation says it sold the best on its debut day of any title in PlayStation Network history. That claim accompanies the fact that the remaster was the top-selling PS3 and PS4 game on PSN last month, despite the fact that it launched on January 20. | Battlefield Hardline beta tops six million users Posted: 09 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST Battlefield Hardline is something different, and it appears as if gamers were interested enough to at least give it a shot. EA has not only delayed the game based on user feedback, but it's also ran multiple rounds of testing. Producer Steve Papoutsis notes that the attention to feedback is an ongoing process, including this recent beta round this past week. This strategy has likely paid off, since this has been the most successful beta for Hardline to date, racking up six million users and change. Even for a free open beta that's huge -- bigger than Activision's Destiny testing, which previously broke records as one of the most played betas. Battlefield Hardline Beta Update [Electronic Arts] |
The Crew patch fixes months-old lost stats bug, doesn't return lost stats Posted: 09 Feb 2015 04:45 AM PST Ubisoft's open world racer The Crew launched in December with a bug that the team couldn't fix over the holidays or also the month of January. It was a big bug, too, what with it randomly erasing players' stats. With the patch, due out February 12, "Previous data will not be restored, but new statistics should not be lost anymore." The rest of the patch notes are here. The Crew’s upcoming patch will finally fix lost stats bug [VG24/7]
Sling TV launches today on basically every planned platform but the Xbox One Posted: 09 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST Sling TV is here for those of you who own a Roku player, Android or iOS device, or PC. For those of you who haven't heard, it's an online TV service for $20 a month (with packages), that provides you with a number of cable channels without requiring a cable subscription. While the full channel lineup still needs a few more major players to really make a splash, the company has just announced today that AMC is joining the basic package, which is great news since The Walking Dead is still going strong, and Better Call Saul just debuted last night. Amazon Fire TV/Stick and Xbox One support is said to arrive "in the coming months." When that happens, I'll provide a more comprehensive picture of whether or not it's worth cutting the cord for -- if you haven't already.
Noct will scare the shit out of you when you least expect it Posted: 09 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST The derelict building was a sanctuary, a place to gather supplies and take shelter from the horrors of the outside world. I moved from one chamber to the next, anxiously investigating the structure, sighing in relief upon clearing the final alcove. No hostiles. It was safe. Or so I thought. It charged through the door the moment I lowered my guard, almost as though it was reading my mind, just waiting for the perfect moment to strike. I attempted to defend myself, but it was too late. The hulking abomination had me cornered and wasted no time running me down. This is the cruel world of Noct, a nightmarish landscape from the mind of Chris Eskins.
Shiftlings follows two space janitors as they try not to be F.I.R.E.D. Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:45 AM PST Usually, puzzle platformers feature a single protagonist, as the player guides him through environments filled with perils. In some cases, as with Ilomilo or ibb and obb, two are tethered to one another by the common goal of touching a thing and/or getting to the exit. The two unlucky space janitors in Shiftlings join in on that tradition, except they are literally tethered to each other. Sharing one life support system across two space suits, aliens Purple Plop and Green Goop can move gas between each individual suit, ballooning one or the other up at will. With this ability, they bounce around, plug up holes, and generally avoid the various death traps around them. While the hose connecting them gives them their abilities, it also acts as a weak point in the system: if it is severed, they both suffocate and die. That is just one of the ways that the two can be F.I.R.E.D. Perils of the job include being flattened, ignited, robo-murderized, electrocuted, or dismembered. Shiftlings is set to release the week of March 3 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Phil Spencer teases Xbox One screenshot capture Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST The Xbox One has undergone some massive improvements since launch, but it still lacks one glaring bit of functionality -- easy screenshot capturing. After a long delay it seems as if Microsoft head Phil Spencer has broken the silence, however. Spencer recently tweeted out a nonchalant "nice to finally be doing this on my Xbox One dev kit." Yeah, it is pretty nice! Now for some sort of timeline as to when we'll be able to use this feature. Phil Spencer [Twitter]
| AeternoBlade carves out a Vita release this week Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:15 AM PST AeternoBlade arrives on PlayStation Vita tomorrow, the latest PlayStation Blogcast reveals. The action platformer tells the story of Freyja, a warrior on a mission to take revenge on the man who destroyed her village and killed her tribe. It initially released on Nintendo 3DS early last year, earning high marks from Destructoid's reviews tsar Chris Carter. In his review, Chris stated "even though [AeternoBlade] doesn't really reach for the stars and looks decidedly dated, it's a decent way for any Metroidvania fan to spend their time." | The Denpa Men RPG Free! hits 1.8 million downloads in Japan Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST I'm glad that The Denpa Men franchise is still around. While it wasn't the best set of games on the already crowded 3DS eShop, it was a cute enough series, and I would like to see the little guys live on in some form. It looks like developer Genius Sonority has attained that goal, with its newly minted The Denpa Men RPG Free! hitting 1.8 million downloads on the 3DS. Now, that number doesn't necessarily mean converted customers, but for a small indie project, getting 1.8 million people to even download your game is a bonafide success. It's likely that this will come westward at some point, but for now we don't have any concrete info. The Denpa Men RPG Free! Reaches 1.8 Million Downloads On Nintendo eShop [Siliconera] |
| DmC Definitive Edition wants you to visit Vergils Bloody Palace Posted: 09 Feb 2015 02:45 AM PST Vergil's Bloody Palace is a 60-floor combat arena coming to the current generation remaster for Ninja Theory's DmC, which Alessandro took a long look at a couple weeks back. Unlike Dante's, which progresses through the game's five difficulty levels, Vergil's palace starts on Nephilim difficulty en route to Son of Sparda and Vergil Must Die. | Creator of Contrast shows off its new project Posted: 09 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST In 2013, developer Compulsion Games let loose Contrast upon the world, first arriving on the PC and PS4 platforms before hitting the PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. It received a mixed reception mostly due to its so-so gameplay elements, but it was intriguing enough to the point where I wanted to see more from the studio. Thankfully we'll get that chance, as the dev has teased its upcoming new project -- and it looks just as interesting. All we have now is a freaky masked individual, and the assurance that it is "not a sequel to Contrast." That's good enough for me for now, and I'm really digging the art style so far. | Capcom is working on ten online games at the moment...ten Posted: 09 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Capcom Online Games is a thing, if you haven't heard about it already. It seems as if the publisher is tired of putting money into smaller franchises that don't make millions upon millions of dollars, so it's bumping up production of major hits and online titles in 2015. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Capcom is working on ten online games at the moment. Dragon's Dogma Online, Breath of Fire 6, and Deep Down are three, but there are a lot more in production. Speaking of Deep Down, apparently there will be "more to show" later this year. According to Capcom, developing the game takes "five to six times more effort than Monster Hunter Frontier G." カプコン「現在10本以上の未発表タイトル(オンラインゲーム) [Hachima Kikou via Gematsu] |
Are you okay with picking up multiplayer-heavy games week one? Posted: 09 Feb 2015 12:45 AM PST It's always been tough to judge the longevity of multiplayer games. Even growing up on PC titles with dedicated servers and devout fanbases, what's here today could be gone tomorrow, and many thriving online games have turned into ghost towns. Just look at the stark dropoff of Titanfall, a fun first-person shooter a lot of people stopped playing so much the developer had to eliminate some playlists. But now it's even tough to judge how a multiplayer game will fare in its infant stages. With broken components and bad connections, picking up something that's heavily reliant on online play can be a crap shoot. So how do you feel in this current climate -- are you picking up Evolve this week regardless of how it operates at launch, and are you undeterred for other online-heavy games as well? Or do you wait to hear the opinions of others for the "go ahead" so to speak?
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS will get its amiibo update ahead of the New 3DS launch Posted: 09 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST As we all know, the New 3DS will have the ability to work with amiibo out of the box -- as long as the game allows it. Thankfully, Super Smash Bros. 3DS will be getting an amiibo-centric software update tomorrow, ensuring that everyone in the US will be able to play with them once the new hardware iteration drops on February 13. That's great! The only issue now is that millions of "old" 3DS users don't have the adapter to even utilize amiibo functionality. Hopefully it'll arrive soon -- a Nintendo rep recently stated in a reddit AMA that development on the accessory was basically complete, and that it was slated to arrive sometime between amiibo Waves 3 and 4.
Posted: 08 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST Last night a few Evolve reviews were posted. Ours isn't ready just yet, though. 2K Games informed us that servers won't actually go live until later today, to prepare for the official launch. In other words, since we haven't had the opportunity to test real-life servers yet, we therefore do not have a review. Once we obtain a full retail copy of the game all of you will be playing, our own Nic Rowen will put it through its paces, and provide an update of his experience at launch, followed by a full, scored review. In other words, its part of our normal review in progress initiative, used to cover games reliant on online components. As always, use reviews and videos as a guide, not gospel. It helps to gather as much information as you can before making an informed purchasing decision, and we'll help you with that process once servers go live.
