H1Z1 real life loot drop unboxing with Samus and Sagat

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST

People tend to hate microtransactions as a rule, but like any other tool, the relative quality all depends on how they're used. Make a game that suits a small but passionate audience who values the opportunity to purchase new content in small increments, and you're making everyone happy, especially if you use those profits to continue to improve the experience for your players. Use that money to send real life stuff to various videogame industry people in order to promote your game, and I'm not sure who you're making happy at that point.

That's sort of what happened here. Samus and Sagat recently received a heavy wooden box marked H1Z1 on the side, filled with survival things like a hat and some beets. It's similar to the air drop supply crates you get in-game if you are willing to pay a little real life cash. So in short, Sony used real money that they made from selling in-game supply crates to send Samus and Sagat a real life supply crate that they can use to survive an in-game zombie apocalypse.

Whoa.

Which video game makes you the happiest?

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST

Whenever you're having a rough day, there's nothing better than sitting down and putting on a game that makes you happy just to play it. Something that makes you laugh and smile, helps to relieve stress, or gets you to stop worrying about things for a bit. For some, this might be their favorite game. For others, it's more of a comfort game. Nevertheless, everyone has at least one game that makes them happy.

So, which video game makes you the happiest? Here's what our staff had to say:

After five long years, Portal: Outside Influence nears completion

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST

It seems like we were just posting about Portal mods the other day, doesn't it? Well, we've got another one for you to look at today, but there's a quite a bit more going on under the surface of this stellar-looking mod than you might at first think.

In an effort to provide full disclosure and absolute transparency for our readers, there are a few things that you should know about this particular mod before we get started:

Portal: Outside Influence will feature voice and script-editing contributions by both current and past Destructoid staff, namely our adorable Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Holmes; immensely talented contributing editors, the mustachioed wordsmith, Conrad Zimmerman; the lovely Laura Kate Dale, as well as voice work from our celebrated former Reviews Editor, Mr. Jim Fucking Sterling, Son. Additionally, certain musical selections will be provided by virtuoso community member, Alphadeus.

Non-Destructoid contributions include music from producer NxSG, script-work from co-writer Emilia Wake, and sound design by Matt Turner.

Why are so few of Evolve's characters female?

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

Evolve will launch with twelve hunters: eight men, three women, and a robot, though it's referred to as a "he." Of the three female characters, two are medics (Val and Caira) and the other (Maggie) is a trapper. There are currently no female assault or support class characters.

That could certainly change in the future. The asymmetric shooter's season pass contains an additional four hunters. As it stands, though, three-fourths of the cast are men, a ratio sure to disappoint some. Others may be surprised to learn there are any female characters at all.

The topic came up in an interview I conducted with Evolve creative director Phil Robb late last year. Speaking at developer Turtle Rock Studios' office in Lake Forest, CA, Robb told me "there was no political agenda" behind the uneven gender distribution. "It wasn't a planned thing," he added.

Robb went on to describe a fluid design process, one driven by "what feels right."

Review: Sunless Sea

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST

Adrift at sea in a massive underground cavern. No natural lighting to speak of. Your ship's hull has taken a beating from enemy cannon fire and giant crustaceans. Fuel and supplies are running low, but you might be able to survive the journey back home if you're willing to make some sacrifices. Your crew is growing scared and restless. You think you hear something moving under the water...

Sunless Sea is a game of choices. Will you risk smuggling illegal cargo to faraway ports if it means extra money for supplies? Will you offer sacrifices to the gods of the sea, or remain firm in your belief that your frightened, pious crew are just being superstitious? Will you resort to feeding on rats if you can't find anything else to eat? If it comes down to it, would you even be willing to eat your own crew if it meant you could survive another day? These are all questions you will eventually have to ask yourself if you ever hope to be victorious in the cold, dark waters of the Unterzee.

Valve and ESL retract ban on ex-ESC Gaming CS:GO team

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST

Last Friday, Valve and eSports League Europe, issued tentative bans on three Counter-Strike: Global Offensive competitive teams. Epsilon eSports, the former ESC Gaming team, and WinneR had players who were accused of match fixing and unsportsmanlike conduct. This comes in the wake of last month's scandal involving individuals from iBUYPOWER and NetCodeGuides.com who made a profit of around $10,000 from fixing matches between the two.

After further investigation, Valve and the ESL rescinded the ban on the ex-ESC Gaming team and stated, "The ex-ESC players were restricted from participating in Valve-sponsored events because their historical account activity matched allegations of misconduct. However, further investigation has clarified their role in the matter, and the restriction has been lifted." The team will be allowed to take back its slot in the offline last-chance qualifier at ESL One Katowice 2015.

No further comment has been made concerning the other two teams.
