| Jump into the sun for just $.99 Posted: 07 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST Sunburn is an award winning game on iTunes about leading a group of stranded space explorers, dangerously close to the sun, doomed to die a boring death by asphyxiation. What would you do if you had no hope for survival and a limited time to live, and you just happened to withing space-jumping distance from the sun? The choice is obvious, right? Any old goof can die from lack of oxygen, but the opportunity to see the sun that close only comes once in a lifetime. Literally! If that sounds fun to you, you can check the game out on your phone right now for the low "Super Sunny Sale" price of $.99. |
| Troll gone wrong: Suspected swatter arrested Posted: 07 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST Have you ever heard the saying, just because you can doesn't mean you should? Well, apparently this guy didn't. A Las Vegas "man" has been arrested after authorities alleged Brandon Willson, 19, made up a murder in order to get police to come down on another person's home. Going by the name Famed God, Wilson allegedly used his computer to contact a 911 center and claimed a murder happened at a home in Naperville. When Naperville’s Special Response Team arrived, they found no crime. Is this the same Famed God involved with the recent PSN fiasco? It's possible, but that's not why he was arrested this time. Willson also is accused of hacking into the gaming consoles of at least two people to obtain or change their personal information. What a winner! Oh, and he also allegedly threatened that he would access a person’s bank and Social Security accounts and put the person’s father "in debt for life." The Chicago Sun Times reports that Wilson is charged with two counts of computer tampering and one count each of intimidation, computer fraud, identity theft and disorderly conduct. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted. Hey kids, swatting is bad, mmmmkay. Las Vegas man arrested for Naperville ‘swatting’ incident [Chicago Sun Times]

| Raid Square Enix's tomb with this weekend's Steam sale Posted: 07 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST This weekend's Square Enix Publisher Weekend sale has some ridiculous deals. Some of my childhood favorites that I didn't even know made it to PC are on there, including the whole Legacy of Kain series. Here's some of the highlights:
This sale has some of the most iconic games of the late '90s and early '00s. If you haven't had the chance to play these, or haven't played them for a while, almost every game in this sale is money well spent. If you're hankering for one of these games, but just struggle with commitment, check back tomorrow for a chance to win one of these titles! |
| Amber's Unboxing Series: Voltron, Star Wars and Space Invaders Posted: 07 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST Amber's back with another month's worth of fun junk from Loot Crate. A lot of cool crap here, guys. She also had fun taking your feedback from last month's episode and using it to try to improve her style. I think she's doing a heck of a job, but if there are specific things you'd like to see her try with this series in the future, let us know. Personally, I'd like to see a little more of the comics that she gets in those crates, and maybe get a look at her drawing technique the next time she gets a sketch pad, but that's just me. We're also looking at opening up this series to more varietys of subscription junk, so if there is other mail order videogame swag services you'd like to see reviewed, let us know about that too, and thanks for watching. |

| Japanese Xenoblade Chronicles X cover is pretty badass Posted: 07 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST If video game box covers hype you up, then this newly released Japanese cover for Xenoblade Chronicles X found on Amazon Japan certainly has the potential to get you mega excited. Whether or not we will see this bad boy in North America or elsewhere remains to be seen, but surely they think the rest of us are worthy of such a cover, right? Who do we have to beg around here to make it happen? |
| Techland declares support for Dying Light modders Posted: 07 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST In a complete 180° from the events of last week, Techland has announced it will support mods for Dying Light. In an attempt to stop hacks for the "Be the Zombie" mode, Techland accidentally blocked modders from being able to tweak the game's files. Additionally, the Entertainment Software Association erroneously issued DMCA takedowns against sites hosting mods. Techland stated it would be releasing official mod tools and apologized for any offense it unintentionally caused. In the past the company has been supportive of the modding community and has stated that policy will continue with Dying Light. It created a dedicated forum for modders, which until the official tools release will probably be more of a place to share ideas than anything, but before long we hopefully will see some great things come out of it. | Experience Points .03: EarthBound Posted: 07 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome. This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time. This entry is all about EarthBound, one of my favorite games of all time. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments! |
| 3000AD releases remastered Universal Combat CE for free on Steam Posted: 07 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST If Randy Pitchford and Peter Molyneux had a baby, Derek Smart would be the result. The long-running controversy concerning his first game Battlecruiser 3000AD is the stuff of internet legend and could fill a tome. With Usenet flame wars, lawsuits, and flipped tables, it was a huge ordeal. I bought both BC3K and Battlecruiser Millenium and they're near and dear to my heart. They're not good games, they're broken, confusing, rambling games, but they were ambitious and I had as much fun trying to get them to work and figuring out just what the fuck was even going on than I've had with complete AAA titles. 3000AD is still around and kicking, though not nearly as vocal as it was in the late '90s. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battlecruiser series, the company has remastered Universal Combat 2.0 Collector's Edition and released it on Steam for free. Derek Smart might be crazy as a shithouse rat, but he does show appreciation for his fans as this release is just the latest in 3000AD's policy of making its older games available as shareware when support for them is ended. 3000AD is still hard at work bringing its unique brand of broken, yet intriguing, space odysseys to new generations of players with a new refresh of Universal Combat underway. Regardless of quality I'm glad that there are developers like this in the industry who aren't afraid to reject the status quo. | My interview with the voice of Vegeta didn't go so well Posted: 07 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST I was surprised to find myself given the opportunity to interview Christopher Sabat; the founder of voice over studio, Okratron500, and the voice actor for Vegeta, and many other Dragon Ball characters. I've been a huge Dragon Ball fan for years, if you couldn't tell from the Just Saiyan series we once did, so this was very exciting for me. Perhaps my nerves got to me, or perhaps I'm just rusty from not having done any interviews for a while, but this did not go well. I didn't get the impression that Chris liked me very much. If you want actual information on Dragon Ball Xenoverse, just click here. [Disclosure: This interview took place at a Bandai Namco event held at a venue in San Francisco that I forgot the name of. It was catered by a food truck, but I wasn't very hungry. They started serving free alcoholic cocktails at 4:30. Chris was great sport with this video. I didn't actually stalk him.] |
| Jacob 'Humble' Browe talks Minelands: Call of the Border Posted: 07 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST Jacob "Humble" Browe is a visionary. He's just shipped a multi-billion dollar game to hundreds of retailers across the United States and Canada, with additional release dates staggered across the world. After running a successful Kickstarter that raised over $6.5 million to campaign for Avenged Sevenfold to play in his backyard, he then created a Patreon in an effort to supplement his crippling Starbucks habit month-to-month while using kickbacks from his millionaire parents to create Minelands: Call of the Border, the game that's got millions clamoring for a sequel only a day or so after release. Now he's making waves in the industry like we've never seen before. From humble beginnings, he's rising through the ranks of the video game business like a shooting star. It's going to be one fascinating ride. |
| 25% off next week's Evolve and June's Arkham Knight Posted: 07 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST The newsy deals this weekend are all on recently released and upcoming titles. Just yesterday, GMG relaunched its "VIP" sale (aka MSRP circumventing sale), where you'll see discounts on next Tuesday's Evolve and this summer's Batman: Arkham Knight. You'll need to login or create an account on this page to see the discounts. The 25% off applies to all three of Evolve's Editions - the regular ole' Standard at $45, Digital Deluxe at $60, and the pricey Monster Race Edition at $75. We ran the math, and essentially you can safely skip the Digital Deluxe - it offers the least compelling savings. Grab Standard if you don't care about the 5th monster, but if you do, you'll probably have to fork over the $75 for the Monster Race Edition (which includes the Season Pass and all those other trinkets). Over at Steam Store, they're running a Square Enix Weekend Sale, offering new lows on the Tomb Raider Collection and Lara Croft and The Temple Of Osiris. Games from the Final Fantasy series are also on sale, although they've been cheaper in the past. For consoles, Walmart is matching Black Friday's $39.99 price tag for Dragon Age: Inquisition on all the platforms. Good game, even if the weekend multiplayer events are a dud for now. |
| Fan film shows Gordon Freeman battling boredom Posted: 06 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST The wait for some kind of news on Half-Life 3 has been tough for everyone. A story cut off midway through being told, a set of balanced gameplay mechanics going to waste, and a developer who loves to announce things that are nothing to do with Half-Life in sets of three, knowing full well what we're all going to jump to. Many of us have lived for years with a sense of boredom, frustration and hope when it comes to us one day seeing Half-Life 3 get announced. Well, Gordon Freeman has been feeling the exact same way if this fan made film is to be believed. The five-minute-long fan film, Half-Life 3: Unannounced, was made by New Zealand film studio Fence Post Productions and tells a really bittersweet story about an adventurer who's a little worse for wear and eager to get back to doing what he does best. Come on Valve, see what you're doing to poor Mr. Freeman. Cut him a break and let him set off on a new mission. |
