Samuel L. Jackson is the real Ghost we deserve Posted: 06 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST One of the many knocks against Destiny is its story -- I mean, if you can call it that. And after earlier versions of the game, there was a vocal group of gamers who suggested that Peter Dinklage, the loveable Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones, was phoning in his performance as the Ghost tag along. Well, what if we replaced that empty Dinklage performance with the voice talents of American treasure Samuel L. Jackson? I think the answer is pretty clear from this video. The game suddenly becomes one of the greatest masterpieces of our time.
Casting The Legend of Zelda: A Netflix television series Posted: 06 Feb 2015 12:30 PM PST Netflix is reportedly making a live-action television series based on The Legend of Zelda. The news immediately sent the country, nay the world into mass hysteria. Some folks expressed unfettered glee. Others were upset, their minds drifting back to 1993 with repressed memories of the Super Mario Bros. movie seeping up through the floorboards of their tortured psyches. Anyway, let's suppose it's true. Such a production will need a cast. Let's put together another one.
These gifs for The Wild XYZ speak to me Posted: 06 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST This cool little top-down action/adventure game, The Wild XYZ, caught my eye on Tumblr today. It began life as as a prototype for the Space Cowboy Jam, and designer Joseph Gribbin has been chipping away at completing it in his spare time with a release later this year in mind. There aren't many gameplay specifics listed yet, only a lone devlog post and some gifs, but I can't stop watching them. Rolling looks good; shoot-'em-up-y bosses, too. Also, I had no idea .xyz was available as a domain extension. It's used perfectly on the game's website. Curious to see where this project goes. The Wild XYZ [Tumblr]
Dream cast: I want these actors for Netflix's live-action Legend of Zelda Posted: 06 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST I'm sure you've heard the bizarre news. Netflix is working on a live-action The Legend of Zelda series that is described as, "Game of Thrones for a family audience," which is kind of like if Breaking Bad was about Peanuts characters in a lemonade stand competition. I think Netflix is missing a huge opportunity to take J. K. Rowlings' Game of Thrones style--nudity and blood and tits--and present an aging Nintendo fanbase with a gritty re-imagining of the universe, but I'll respect Netflix's direction and cast a Legend of Zelda series where throne ascendancy disputes get solved like the time on Fresh Prince where it turns out Uncle Phil is really good at billiards. Not everything on television can be mature content for grown ups about dragons and skeletons, after all. Here's my dream cast!
Shadow of Mordor picks up eight D.I.C.E. awards, but not game of the year Posted: 06 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST When I think of the D.I.C.E. Awards, I'll remember montage guy, now and forever. I wasn't around to see if any similar unscripted hilarity took place at this year's show, but I did catch that Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor took home eight awards before losing out to Dragon Age: Inquisition for game of the year, and Destiny was lauded as the best action title of 2014. Huh. Find the nominees here, and the full list of winners below.
Friday Night Fights: Call of Earth: Last Hawk Defense 4 Posted: 06 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST Welcome back to Friday Night Fights! Once again, I am your new God host, Mike Effin Martin. Looking at the above image, I would not want to be Tony Hawk's kid? Sheesh. As a parent, I cringe. As a person who loves skateboarding, I love it. I grabbed myself a new plank this week, after years of not riding. Found a nice little Black Label deck, with some Grind Kings and Spitfires for $100. Figures that it starts raining today though. Got my son his first deck as well and I'm excited and nervous to ride with him. On one hand, I really look forward to sharing my greatest passion with my son; but on the other, I am a very protective parent. Going to have to take this slow, for his sake. I don't want to ruin awesome things by helicopter parenting my kid. In more game-related and community-based news, I am cooking up a possible contest for you folks. Something that will require you guys to work together and share it with the community. I am also beginning to plan a Mortal Kombat tournament, in anticipation of the new release. Look forward to those in the coming weeks. We are also compiling a list of all the clans you folks play in (here), so that I can begin listing them with these posts. (Please add your clan, if you haven't already done so.) That's about all I've been up to, besides absolutely loving Darkest Dungeon. That damn game is so good. Single player stuff is not for Friday nights though. Browse the list below and join us for some community gaming! If you don't see anything you'd like to play, post your own hosting in the comments! Let's play with each other and then game together!
EA exec admits games are 'too hard' Posted: 06 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST Video games are an interesting medium. On one side of the spectrum, you have hardcore gamers that thrive on a challenge and feast upon the complexities of any given title. And on the other, you have casuals that want to do nothing but poke a mobile or tablet all day. The idea of continuing to branch out to a wider audience seems like it may be a huge focus for Electronic Arts (if it's not already). And really, can you blame them? EA's chief creative officer Richard Hilleman had this to say during the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas: "Our games are actually still too hard to learn. The average player probably spends two hours to learn how to play the most basic game. ... And asking for two hours of somebody's time -- most of our customers, between their normal family lives ... to find two contiguous hours to concentrate on learning how to play a video game is a big ask." We're at an interesting crossroads. Will we continue to see a trend of dumbed-down AAA titles to appeal to the masses? Will hardcore gamers be forced to rely on indie titles to get their fix? Or have video games truly become too complicated for our own good? The future is a scary place, man. EA Exec: "Our Games Are Too Hard To Learn" [GameSpot]
| CD Projekt RED isn't afraid to make The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt difficult Posted: 06 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST If you're planning on purchasing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt you're in for a tough journey. When developing the game, CD Projekt RED wanted to break the mold that action-RPGs have created lately with being too friendly, even on their hardest difficulty. Those used to Skyrim and the like might have a hard time adjusting if they've never played an entry of The Witcher series before. Combat is fast-paced, especially for an RPG, so you'll have to be on your toes even if you're facing lower-level enemies. The series has a history of throwing you in the mix and letting you learn through trial and error. There's no level scaling so if you wonder into the wrong place, don't expect to come out. When I played The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings for the first time, about ten minutes in I kept dying during the part where you have to wind the ballista. I eventually figured out that I had to fight tactically, and attempt to pick enemies off one at a time instead of rushing in headlong as I was used to doing in similar games. That kind of tactical thinking is a hallmark of combat in the series and will continue into the third entry. The journey promises to be difficult regardless of setting, with the lowest setting compared to the highest setting in Skyrim, and the hardest being around the toughest Dark Souls has to offer. Permadeath is also an option for the most masochistic among us, called "Dark Difficulty." If you die here, that's it. Your save is deleted and you'll have to start all over, whether you're 10 minutes into the game or 10 hours. I'm pumped for the return of Geralt on May 19, and knowing that I'm not gonna be able to waltz through it only heightens the anticipation. Dark difficulty and permadeath: how hard is The Witcher 3? | Zelda on Netflix looks to be Game of Thrones for the whole family Posted: 06 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a live-action The Legend of Zelda series is currently being developed by Netflix. According to mysterious sources quoted by the Journal, the series is still in its early stages of development and is apparently working closely with Nintendo. The show is still seeking a writer, so it may be quite a bit of time before we hear a whole lot more about this. The most we know right now is that the series will be based on the traditional Zelda story and is looking to be like Game of Thrones, but for a family audience. | Posted: 06 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Widely reviled as one of the worst game companies of all time, LJN earned its infamy way back during the NES era, pumping out terrible licensed game after terrible licensed game. The company was bought by Acclaim where it continued to churn out dubious titles and eventually faded from the public eye. I always assumed its legacy of mediocrity caught up with the company and it just went out of business. As the above video from the Gaming Historian shows though, the story goes a little deeper than that. LJN was first and foremost a toy company, and back in the wild and crazy '80s it thought it would be a great idea to produce a line of realistic water guns. Every gun in the Entertech series was all black with no neon safety tip and based on actual weapons like the Colt 1911, the TEC-9, and M-16. Do you see where this is going? Accidental deaths, robberies, lawsuits, bans, bad news. LJN reworked the line to be far less realistic, but by then the damage was done. The next product idea to rally from the failure of Entertech? Paintball guns marketed towards kids. Nice. LJN limped on for a few more years, but never quite recovered from the disaster of the Entertech line. For all intents and purposes, it folded up shop in 1995 before it could find any other ways to harm defenseless children (unless you count Maximum Carnage on SNES and Genesis, ugh). |
Battlefield Hardline's cops go nuts for donuts Posted: 06 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST I'm not hip on police vernacular. Like, "donuts spotted!" for instance. That probably either means they found donuts, or "spotted" is a cheeky word for sprinkles. Whatever the case, these Battlefield Hardline cops are stoked that there are some frosted confectioneries around. Typical.
Up next for Nintendo: More smartphone games, remakes, and trials on 3DS Posted: 06 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Nintendo plans to release more affordable games for the 3DS "based on past titles and smartphone offerings," reports The Nikkei. The idea is that with lower development costs, the company can justify charging prices as low as "several hundred yen." Expect more demos, too. It's possible to read into that vague description multiple ways, but there is a recent example of what the smartphone-to-3DS transition can look like with Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. There are easily hundreds of older Nintendo games fans would like to see resurface on 3DS, whether simply on the Virtual Console or in some potentially updated form. Getting more original, smaller-scale works like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball on the eShop would also be just lovely. As for system price cuts, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said there currently aren't plans for any. Nintendo to offer more low-cost software [Nikkei]
Mortal Kombat X introduces online factions and brings back the Challenge Tower Posted: 06 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Two more months. Just two more months. That's what I have to keep telling myself while agonizing over the release of Mortal Kombat X. As someone who logged nearly 7,000 matches into the last Mortal Kombat, and still plays Injustice from time to time, any new info is good news, and NetherRealm has recently dropped a lot of details on the game's online modes. Let's dig in.
| MLB 15 The Show gets bat-grain 10th anniversary edition Posted: 06 Feb 2015 06:45 AM PST Ok, that's a pretty sweet steelbook case. And Canada getting the Blue Jays' Russel Martin on the case is a nice touch. The rest of this package is a little more troubling. First, the 10th anniversary is only offered for PS4. Then there's the recent PlayStation Blog post that lists all of MLB 15's updates. The first category is "Gameplay Improvements"--an important one--wherein it notes "(PS4 and PS3 only)." So the Vita is probably going to end up a hack job. Giving $10 worth of in-game currency and $15 of item packs just feels like a way to encourage these micro transactions in the future, giving players a taste. Especially since you're paying an additional $10 for this edition anyways. You get all 30 teams' dynamic PS4 themes ($3.50 each), but I imagine you'll only want to use one of them. The team you're a fan of. Yeah, the packaging is the only thing that's any good here, and it isn't worth $10 to me. Annual sports games should be the last ones to try and get away with microtransactions, given their iterative nature and good sales. | Kids just won't understand how jaggy Q*Bert used to be Posted: 06 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST When Q*Bert Rebooted does a weird little hop thing over to PS4, PS3, and Vita, it'll evoke two different thoughts from its prospective audience. Old-timers won't be able to recall everything looking so smooth. Youngins will wonder what the hell a Q*Bert is. The transition from cubes to hexagons might be tough for seasoned Q*Bert players. Just like it was tough when Johnny Carson went off the air, and when those damned millenials ruined America. |
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D lands in America April 10 Posted: 06 Feb 2015 06:15 AM PST Xenoblade Chronicles 3D arrives in North America starting April 10, Nintendo revealed today. The company also reconfirmed the title's European launch date, April 2. The role-playing game is the first New Nintendo 3DS exclusive, making use of the portable's improved inputs and processing power. It also includes StreetPass functionality and amiibo support, both of which earn players tokens used to unlock music and character models. New Nintendo 3DS will be available across North America and Europe by this time next week.
The Halo 5 beta had exactly one Killpocalypse, here it is Posted: 06 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Any Killpocalypse medal earned in Halo is an impressive one. Perhaps that's why there was only a singular instance of it happening throughout the entirety of the Halo 5: Guardians beta. For those who aren't in the know, a Killpocalypse is a kill-streak where nine opponents are eliminated with no more than four seconds lapsing between each kill. What makes Omnipression's feat all the more remarkable is that he did it in four-on-four matches -- no Big Team Battle. The other side just kept spawning and tasting the sweet release of death over and over.
Actually, there are shields in Bloodborne Posted: 06 Feb 2015 05:45 AM PST There are shields in Bloodborne after all, SCE Japan Studio has confirmed to IGN. Well I'll be. Shields will seem like a comfort to Souls players who haven't yet experienced the faster, in-your-face action of Bloodborne, but know that you won't want to get too comfortable: "if you're always standing back and guarding, you'll die very quickly," said producer Masaaki Yamagiwa. "We wanted these encounters and battles to be so intense that if you just stand and wait, you'll get overwhelmed and killed right away," he explained. "We wanted to encourage players to not hide and wait, but instead be more aggressive and pro-active in battle." It's true. I heavily relied on shields in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and tended to play conservatively, but mere minutes into trying Bloodborne for the first time I was all about rushing in for the kill. There's this newfound pressure to be unrelenting, and I really dig it. Bloodborne Has Shields [IGN]
La-Mulana EX delayed on Vita, still coming this month Posted: 06 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST La-Mulana EX is on the way for Vita, but it's not ready just yet. Rising Star Games has delayed the Vita version, which was set to arrive any day now. It's set for a "late February" release, which will presumably line up with the PSN update -- so Tuesday, February 24 is looking likely. This game is perfect for a portable play session, especially given how obtuse it can be at times. It'll be even easier to take a break, put the system in standby mode, and come back later. Rising Star Games [Twitter]
Monochromatic puzzle platformer Renoir coming to PC Posted: 06 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST Okay, we have seen grayscale puzzle platformers before, but the film noir style is still largely underused in the gaming space. Renoir wants to fix that. I'm down with the idea, but developer Soulbound Games has a long way to go before it's worth getting excited about. For one thing, the announcement video does not show any gameplay, so it is unclear what kind of puzzle platforming to expect. For two, the voice actor narrating doesn't quite have the gravelly noir sound down. Still, Renoir looks like something to keep on the radar. It is expected to release on PC and unannounced current-generation consoles.
Nintendo reveals Xenoblade Chronicles X multiplayer details and more Posted: 06 Feb 2015 04:45 AM PST I'll be the first one to admit how confused I am as to the connection between Xenogears, the Xenosaga series, and Xenoblade Chronicles other than director Tetsuya Takahashi. Especially given that Xenoblade Chronicles X is a "spiritual sequel" to the first game in the series. Thinking about Xenogears alone is enough to make my head spin, especially after reading Perfect Works. But hey, they're great games, so I guess it doesn't matter!
Etrian Mystery Dungeon shows off the Medic Posted: 06 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST What do you get when you mix Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon series? Etrian Mystery Dungeon of course! With development handled by dungeon master Spike Chunsoft, the new 3DS game will bring in that classic Etrian charm with Atlus publishing. This video shows the Medic class in all of its glory, and more gameplay if you're interested. It's set to drop in March in Japan, and April in the US.
The Dota 2 Asian Championships now has the second highest prize pool in eSports history Posted: 06 Feb 2015 04:15 AM PST The Dota 2 Asian Championships' (DAC) main event is underway now, and currently boasts a prize pool of just under $3,000,000. This brings it to the second highest prize pool ever, behind the 2014 Dota 2 International tournament which raised an incredible $10,923,980. The DAC, just like the International, has a Compendium available to purchase which contributes to the prize pool. The Compendium has a lot of stretch goals and in-game rewards, all of which are laid out here and on display here. The winners of the DAC will take home 42% of the prize pool, and GosuGamers.com has brackets and the schedule all laid out. What a great resource! It's great to see a lot of money contributed to tournaments not named the International, which makes it less of a Super Bowl-esque must-win event for eSports competitors. The more substantial each tournament gets, the easier it is to sustain a lifestyle that revolves around playing Dota 2 competitively. I hope more tournaments allow for direct contributions to the prize pool since the method is proven effective, at least when the stretch goals and HATS are appealing.
Deception IV: Another Princess adds a school and hospital setting Posted: 06 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST I can't contain my excitement for Deception IV: Another Princess. While everything shown off so far has been great, including the first playable character with direct physical attacks, these new settings are the best feature yet. The franchise has usually taken place in dusty old castles and other fantasy locations, but Another Princess will add a school, hospital, and playground to the mix. It's probably the craziest twist on the formula since the series first debuted in 1996. Just look at the amazing gallery of images below, and the newest trailer that shows off a legacy character. It will arrive on the PS3, PS4, and Vita later this year in Japan. No word on a localization just yet. Deception IV’s Updated Version Has Trap Filled Schools And Hospital [Siliconera]
The newest Steam beta client update is all about that DLC Posted: 06 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST Steam constantly improves itself, adding new features for us all the time. The latest beta client update includes DLC improvements, which adds in a "DLC view" to better see your add-on content. It not only shows your currently owned add-ons, but also what's installed. It's a neat feature since some DLC is bigger than base games these days. There's also a few minor fixes like push to talk improvements, and your "recent" list will include both purchases and played titles. Steam Client Beta Update - February 4th [Steam]
Activision: Next Call of Duty to be 'loaded with innovation' Posted: 06 Feb 2015 03:15 AM PST To the surprise of absolutely no one, the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise is well underway. If a Call of Duty game doesn't release, it doesn't actually count as a calendar year, you know. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg confirmed the expected news during a recent earning call. The 2015 iteration will be helmed by Treyarch, the studio responsible for Black Ops, World at War, and bringing zombies to the militaristic shooter. Hirshberg further added some vague promises of quality, saying that "it'll be loaded with innovation." To many, Advanced Warfare was the facelift the series needed. We'll have to wait and see if Treyarch's "loads of innovation" further add to that. Call of Duty 2015 is scheduled for fall from Treyarch, creator of Black Ops and zombies [Polygon]
Dying Light includes a strange recreation of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. Posted: 06 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Dying Light is making plenty of headlines, and not only for its unique brand of survival horror. There's also a host of interesting Easter eggs that can be found within the game if you take the time out to find them. While the game contains parodical nods to games like Destiny and others, arguably the most popular is this Super Mario Bros. Easter egg. The video above, courtesy of YouTuber Gametastik, takes you through a special pipe which you can find in the second open world zone in Dying Light that'll have you exploring a replica of World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. You can put all your sick parkour skills to good use while exploring the well-known stage from a first-person view for once, and stomp on some zombies for a real nostalgia trip...you know, if goombas were zombies and all that. Completing the area will net you some experience, but you'll want to seek out this fun little extra for a neat little throwback to a much simpler time in gaming. ‘Dying Light’ Includes Super Mario Bros. Level Easter Egg [Game Rant]
Flipnote Studio 3D Club Nintendo parting gift delayed Posted: 06 Feb 2015 02:45 AM PST Ever since Club Nintendo debuted its giant list of rewards, the site has been taking a beating. It's been hard to get in at all, much less redeem any Coins. Even though the site lists them as the "final" rewards, never say never -- Nintendo could have a few tricks up its sleeve before it finally calls it quits. As a result, Nintendo is currently fixing the site, but that means that the Flipnote Studio 3D free game reward has been delayed. It was supposed to arrive this week, and it did launch, but it crashed the site. It will now drop "later this month," so keep your eyes open. Flipnote Studio 3D [Nintendo]
Holy crap, check out the neon Goro hiding out behind Ed Boon! Posted: 06 Feb 2015 02:15 AM PST You know, developers are always looking for pre-order bonuses and special edition swag to get us to buy-in early. They'll hold popular character hostage for a pre-order or contract out an art design house to build a special little statue of a ninja (that looks like a villain from Batman Beyond), but sometimes, they miss the obvious answer. If that neon Goro was a packed in as a bonus for Mortal Kombat X, I'd have already pre-ordered two copies.
Xbox One's February update is pretty nice Posted: 06 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST Xbox One's February update is out. The highlight is probably the controller update, which lets you connect your Xbox One controllers faster, and fixes a few bugs. You'll also be able to access the Game Hub, which basically just lists off tons of info regarding specific titles, like achievements, leaderboards, friends who play it, and so on. It's kind of like what the PS4 has now but a little more in-depth, since you can "follow" games like Twitter and see more posts. Tile transparency is a nice feature, which lets you see your backgrounds and wallpapers better. The TV feature has also been upgraded with a few extras, and is now live in more regions. It's not a mind blowing update, but the controller bit alone will be great if it works, since some of my remotes take up to 10 seconds to connect. Xbox One [Xbox Wire]
Impact Winter's post-apocalyptic squad survival goes to Greenlight Posted: 06 Feb 2015 01:30 AM PST Impact Winter looked cool when it showed up last year on Kickstarter, but potential backers gave it an icy reception; it only made about 22% of its initial funding goal. Any who were worried that it may not see the light of day can chill out; development on the survival adventure has not frozen. Indeed, the project has moved onto Steam Greenlight with a projected release window of 2016, hoping that Steam users won't give it the cold shoulder. It may be a long ways off still, but even in its early alpha state it's snow slouch in the visual department. Destructoid will continue to keep its ice on the project.
| Elite: Dangerous 1.1 patch brings pilots together and enhances gameplay Posted: 06 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Elite: Dangerous continues to mature with the latest 1.1 BETA update. The addition of Community Goals adds missions for groups of players to work towards, like destroying x amount of enemies, or hauling a certain cargo to a destination. The success or failure of these goals will be felt in-universe as factions gain or lose strength accordingly.
Elite: Dangerous is still very much a work in progress. However, Frontier Developments keeps expanding it towards their goal of a 1:1, living, breathing version of the Milky Way Galaxy. Elite: Dangerous is available now for $59.99. Elite Dangerous 1.1 adds Community Goals and enhancements [Eurogamer] |
GameStop joins the growing list of retailers screwed by Nintendo's US amiibo rollout Posted: 06 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST I know a lot of people don't like GameStop. That's cool. Like any retailer, bad customer service has the propensity to make people not want to return to a store. My local GameStop though is pretty great, and I've developed a rapport over the years with the staff there. So I have to listen to a short pre-order spiel because it's their job and they don't want to get fired -- no big deal. Plus, GameStop has been excellent with its handling of the amiibo situation so far. While Toys"R"Us, Target, and Best Buy have been fairly abysmal, canceling orders and handling pre-orders very poorly, GameStop is right up there with Amazon in terms of getting amiibo in the hands of customers. But the good times can't roll on forever, right? In addition to reports of delays from Amazon, GameStop is now joining the ranks of "we can't meet demand in the US" squad. Multiple readers are reporting GameStop has delayed a few amiibo beyond the release date of other retailers, specifically King Dedede and a few other Wave 3b characters. Worst of all, some readers are stating their order for Shulk, the exclusive figure that you can only get at GameStop, have been outright canceled. This is especially troubling because insiders have stated Shulk will be the most rare out of all of the exclusives, even more than Rosalina due to low or non-existent in-store stock. At some Targets, there were roughly 50 or more Rosalina figures. They may have sold out instantly or in an hour, but they were there. Reaching out to GameStop, it seems like Nintendo is to blame, as it is getting a "lower than anticipated stock" of all of Wave 3, including Shulk. These messages I'm getting from readers lineup with other reports, like this one from the Amiibo Inquirer. It's also rumored Target and Best Buy will not be stocking any amiibo from Wave 3b, making this potentially the most rare product drop yet. At this point no single retailer is safe from cancellations or delays. If you really want these things, you'll have to just pray at this point and keep up with the latest news to see if anything has changed.
Kane Hodder's on-screen killing spree continues in Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp Posted: 05 Feb 2015 07:00 PM PST If you know me, you know I love horror films. I also happen to be very much in love with everyone's favorite masked killer, Jason Voorhees. I even got a cute lil' bloody cleaver on my leg in preparation for what I wanted to become a tattoo tribute to gore, Jason, and Hellraiser, but that has yet to happen. You know what is happening, though? Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp. You know what you do in that game? You kill people. As a masked killer. At a camp. Sound familiar? But you don't just kill people as any old random loser off the street. You're going to get to take up the mantle of Kane Hodder. Yeah, that Kane Hodder. The one behind the hockey mask in four Friday the 13th films, the very same to play Victor Crowley of Hatchet, and one of my very favorite horror icons. He'll be lending his talents to the game in the form of motion captured movements, which should make for some interesting aesthetics. With the revelation of Hodder's involvement in Summer Camp, Lexington-based Gun Media's multiplayer endeavor is looking quite enticing to me. But wait! That's not all! Who's working alongside Hodder during motion capture sessions? The one and only Tom Savini, of course. You might remember him from a little film called Dawn of the Dead, where he was responsible for the special effects that made audiences' skin crawl. He's basically a legend in the horror industry: look him up. Rounding out the trifecta of terror is Henry Manfredini. You know the Friday the 13th score? He's responsible for that. I can't speak for the quality of the game yet, as I've not been able to get my hands on it, but I'm hoping for a love letter to my favorite years for slasher horror, and that these three fantastic personalities from the business will serve Gun Media well. We'll have to wait until more details surface to comment further, but I'm very pleasantly surprised by the announcements thus far. In the meantime, let's all have a Friday the 13th marathon. I know Jason X is really terrible and all, but let's watch that one first. That sleeping bag scene really makes the entire film.
