You can beat Dying Light with no weapons, just punches and dropkicks Posted: 04 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST Not long removed from Dying Light's recent release, one boy decided to play through the entire game engaging only its best elements. That is, running around and drop kicking fools. It's dubbed the Jean Claude Van Damme run and its the only correct way to play a game that has drop kicks. More games need drop kicks.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night theme eases the wait for Persona 5 news Posted: 04 Feb 2015 02:02 PM PST Okay, no big Persona 5 reveal yet. I am still completely, sincerely excited for the Persona 4 rhythm game and this amazing track, which we covered earlier today, is why. It's also worth listening to Japanese Teddy for. Plus, 90's boyband, bandana-clad Kanji. And my girl Chie finally making her dance debut. Give me this. If Atlus is sticking to the script, much of the following hours will be rebroadcasts of yesterday's content. Four hours from now (midnight PST) there will be a "Mystery" rebroadcast, so nothing there. At 1AM PST comes the "Final Countdown," then the Persona Stalker Club extra at 1:30AM, followed by the final "Mystery" at 4AM PST. I will not be awake, but someone will, maybe on the other half of the states where it'll be a more reasonable hour to be awake during. May we all wake up to the most glorious of Persona 5 news (it's a buddy cop game starring Chie and Mitsuru).

Nintendo has 'no comment' on third-party Wii games for the Wii U eShop Posted: 04 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST Nintendo recently started selling full Wii games on the Wii U eShop, leaving only the GameCube's library off the list of Nintendo's past home console titles that you can play (officially) on the system. Other than faster load times for some games like Metroid Prime Trilogy, these Wii re-releases haven't received any improvements since they were originally put on the market, but people are still darn excited about them, sometimes more than they were when the games were first introduced. I think that may have something to do with the Wii U's underdog image, but that's a topic for another time. I reached out to Nintendo to see if third-party Wii games might be coming to the Wii U eShop anytime soon, and it didn't have comment. My guess is that's either because it's planning on rolling out third-party games on the service with the announcement of some fan favorite like No More Heroes or Resident Evil 4, or third parties just aren't interested in getting their old Wii games on Nintendo's new console. That would be a shame, because the Wii was packed with the kinds of third-party games that would have sold great on Steam, PSN, and XBLA. Having them available for download on a system with a relatively small install base but a great attach rate might be the perfect way to give them new life. If third parties do start putting Wii games on the Wii U eShop, which would you want them to start with? My short list includes Little King's Story, Muramasa (preferably with the new DLC from the Vita port), MadWorld, No More Heroes 1 & 2, Lost in Shadow, Fragile Dreams, Trauma Team, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Zack and Wiki, A Boy and his Blob, and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, though I assure you that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Masked heartthrob The Phantom teased for Persona 5 Posted: 04 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST Today's issue of Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, as spotted by Gematsu, has a Persona 5 advertisement on the back. It reads, "Advance notice: Tonight I will appear in Nippon Budokan," the venue for the 30-hour Persona concert and super stream. The masked figured looks to have the same casually tussled hair as the presumed protagonist from the first trailer last September, though this guy--The Phantom, as the ransom-y note is signed--is a bit more malevolent looking. Watch the stream here. The "next event" is about to start. Persona 5 teased ahead of Persona Super Live concert in Japanese newspaper [Gematsu]

PS4, Vita ports locked in for rad racer Drift Stage Posted: 04 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST With a few days left on the Kickstarter for Drift Stage, developer Super Systems Softworks has confirmed that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita ports will eventually happen for its arcade racer. Expect those to land sometime next year, as Windows/Mac/Linux is still the priority. As for Wii U and Xbox One versions, we'll see. "If you're a fan of other non-Sony affiliated game devices, we haven't ruled them out, but we don't have anything to say right now." The demo for Drift Stage, early as it is, feels nice. You'll be right at home if you enjoy Ridge Racer. PlayStation 4 Days To Go! [Kickstarter]

Gundam Vs-like 2-on-2 arena fighter Rise of Incarnates on Steam Posted: 04 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Namco took the format of Gundam Vs. and brought it west with a new IP, the free-to-play Rise of Incarnates. After some time in beta, Rise of Incarnates is now in Early Access. And unlike some games that go paid Early Access to help pay for finishing development, Rise of Incarnates is free-to-play, costing you only some megabytes and time. Anyone planning on giving it a shot?

Nostalgia alert: New ToeJam & Earl in the works Posted: 04 Feb 2015 11:15 AM PST As a '90s kid, there was nothing better than sitting down and wasting hours upon hours playing ToeJam & Earl on the Genesis. It was a game unlike any other I had played and I can't even really think of any other game like it that captured my attention in the same way. Well, if you're a '90s kid like me or want to be a '90s kid, then you should know that a new ToeJam & Earl is currently being worked on. We have next to nothing as far as details, but the developers have released some early concept art. Ready to get hyped for a new ToeJam & Earl? [Via NeoGAF] Read more... |
It's hard to believe Grow Home is a Ubisoft game Posted: 04 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST In my dream world, Ubisoft would primarily put out smaller personal projects like Grow Home, but, I get it -- there's substantially more money to be made on Assassin's Creed and its ilk. I'll cherish these moments whenever I can, and boy, Grow Home sure looks like it's worth cherishing. Ben was only just summarizing this adorable platforming adventure the other day and here it is, out on Steam for $7.99 with Ubisoft's pesky Uplay service nowhere in sight. I'm smiling so hard. While I'd encourage you to watch the full trailer for its uplifting music, I made a gif excerpt in case you've only got about seven seconds of curiosity left: Read more... |
Mortal Kombat X's system requirements won't be a fatality for your PC Posted: 04 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST If the top-tier collector's edition is a bit of a brutal finisher move to your wallet, Mortal Kombat X's recommended PC specs are more akin to a Friendship. Well, that is, compared to the outlandish requirements by the bulk of triple-A titles nowadays. No, Mortal Kombat X won't make most rigs sweat just to run it. The recommended specs are getting up there, necessitating an i7 or equivalent. However, there isn't too much to worry about if you don't feel the need to rip someone's spine out in the prettiest way possible. Read more... |
This tool makes it way easier to keep track of your PlayStation Network purchases Posted: 04 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST Managing game downloads on PlayStation Network is a far greater pain that it needs to be, but I've grown accustomed to Sony's ways. Thank goodness for people like redditor RePod37, then, for coming up with an intuitive solution and generously sharing it with the rest of us. You're gonna want to get in on this. It's called PSDLE. It shows a no-nonsense list of your game purchases with tons of filtering/searching options and has download queue support. Just head to the PlayStation Store website, log in like normal, and then paste this into your address bar: javascript:$.getScript("//repod.github.io/psdle/psdle.js");void(0); Depending on your web browser, you may have to manually type in "javascript:" (without quotes) as I did with Firefox. Next, hit enter. You should see a little logo pop up on the bottom left-hand corner of your screen. Click it to start. There's no going back now. Some GameStops now taking in-store pre-orders on Mario Party amiibo Posted: 04 Feb 2015 09:49 AM PST [Update: Toad is up now on GameStop.com. So is the bundle. Go! I am also told that more retail locations will offer pre-orders for all the figures tomorrow.] According to an internal source, the Mario Party 10 amiibo line is not going to be rare, even if Toad is going to be stocked less. But if you have a kid who wants a particular character or a favorite yourself, you may as well play it safe. I got the heads-up that GameStop is now taking in-store pre-orders on Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, and Luigi. Of course, Mario is still exclusive to the Mario Party 10 bundle. I've contacted multiple GameStop locations across the country, and some seem to have them in their system. If they don't already, they may in the next week or so. Give your shop a call before heading out, because a handful of stores seem to be confused with the multiple listings from prior identical amiibo, and one store even said "oh we don't do pre-orders anymore, y'all are just going have to fend for yourselves on them." Yikes. They don't seem to be available on GameStop.com at the current moment.

New Devil May Cry video will melt your face Posted: 04 Feb 2015 09:45 AM PST For me, it's really hard to drum up a lot of excitement for remakes or remasters. If I've already played them, then why do I need to play again? And if I didn't play the first time, then why would I want to now? I'm a discerning consumer. I don't just toss my cash around for nothing. But as we've already learned, DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition is trying to add more value to our revisit of this DmC universe. And you know what, it doesn't look half bad. Check out this new gameplay trailer for yourself and see if it's worthy. Please note, if you're not a fan of dubstep, then you'll want to turn the volume way up.

Ultra Street Fighter IV for $14 as GMG's 2014 Revisited sale continues Posted: 04 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Today Green Man Gaming launched a new batch of PC game deals in its 2014 Revisited sale. Among the deals is the lowest price ever on Ultra Street Fighter IV which ties its all-time low last seen in December during winter sales. There's also a "hidden sale" on a few 2K games. You won't find them just by searching at GMG, and when you go to the deal itself you'll notice it's titled a "Mac" game, implying it won't work for PC. Fortunately these are Steam Play titles and the Steam key you'll receive will work on Windows/Mac (and Linux in the case of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel). Thus far the sale has been decent (Valkyria Chronicles for $8 was excellent; too bad it was a one-day-only deal). Here's hoping some of the top deals will make an encore return next week. OG Binding of Isaac getting DLC love Posted: 04 Feb 2015 09:15 AM PST I'm not going to lie to you, I've never played the original Binding of Isaac. Hell, I didn't even know there was one separate from The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth that has gotten extensive playtime on my Vita. Well, for those of you who were fans of Isaac before it was cool to be a fan of Isaac, then you will want to know that there's some new DLC being developed by co-creator and programmer Florian Himsl -- and he's doing it all himself! Details on this bad boy are slim at the moment, so we'll just have to accept these videos for now. Rebound: Original Binding Of Isaac Getting New DLC [Rock, Paper, Shotgun] Read more... |
Call of Duty unleashes DLC, zombie horde on PlayStation and PC in late February Posted: 04 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST The past few years have seen Microsoft hold a temporary monopoly on Call of Duty add-ons. That hasn't changed with Advanced Warfare, as Xbox players have been mowing down zombie puppies for a solid week now. Activision's announced that those on PS4, PS3, and PC can expect to fight off the infected later this month. Havoc's scheduled to release on those platforms on February 26. They might be a little late to the party, but when the party favors include jetpacking undead gnawing on your neck, never might finally be better than late.

Shape of the World has the prettiest purple trees Posted: 04 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST Conceptually, Shape of the World should not interest me. It's a first-person game about walking. But it looks so stunning, so colorful, that sure, I wouldn't mind getting lost in its ever-shifting world. This is in the works for a PC and Xbox One release next year. Also, it's an Unreal Engine 4 game, which was surprising to hear. I still conjure images of meat cubes and Gears of War when I think Unreal and would love to associate the engine with stuff like Shape of the World instead. Random aside: I almost typed "Shame of the World" by mistake, and now I'm having way too much fun brainstorming what that game might look like. I'm thinking Event Horizon, but more messed up. Meet the winner of Nintendo Power's The Mask II contest Posted: 04 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST In my heart of hearts, Nintendo Power will never die. If you were an American Nintendo gamer in the late '80s to early '90s, this monthly rag granted you unfettered access to a world of insider news and gossip that made you the envy of every schoolyard game jockey. The magazine itself may be gone, but its legacy is immortal. Over the course of nearly 25 years, a number of features and events inside and outside the pages of Power became legendary -- the Super Mario and A Link to the Past comics, the Star Fox 64 promotional VHS, EarthBound's literally stinky ad campaign. But among the most infamous was the ill-fated The Mask II Player's Poll Contest. In Vol. 77, published in October 1995, Nintendo offered one lucky winner a spot as an extra in the sequel to the smash hit action comedy The Mask. Production on the movie was halted indefinitely after Jim Carrey declined to reprise his role, which also meant that whoever won the contest was boned. The Nintendo Power editorial staff did eventually deliver a public apology... in the final issue. What happened in the 17 intervening years? Was the winner awarded an appropriate consolation prize, or did the Big N leave the kid high and dry? Well, why don't I just ask him directly? Read more... |
A detailed look at Dreadnought Posted: 04 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST For all you Battlestar Galactica fanboys who think you can command even half as well as the great William Adama, then the armada fighter Dreadnought might still be the battlefield you're looking for. In this new commentary video, Eino Joas and Timm Boukoura, two of the game’s designers, give us a look at 5v5 Team Deathmatch on the Glacier map. All of this was playable at PAX South, but here's a look in case you didn't get a chance to see it in person.

Hot Take: Grim Fandango is hilarious, but the puzzles suck Posted: 04 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Is it because you know the game? Or is it because you saw a skeleton on the cover? Either way it's all the same, because this is another Hot Take! Today, we're grabbing our scythes and diving into the wacky world of Grim Fandango Remastered for PlayStation 4. Now, I was, how you say, "three years old" when this game came out, so I don't quite have the same amount of reverence you folks might have for this beloved LucasArts title. So, from a fresh young'un's perspective, I can sort of see why people remember Grim Fandango so fondly. The parts of it that aren't a videogame (like the visuals or the writing) are endlessly memorable, but the puzzles...hoo boy. You'll see what I mean.

Choose your own adventure Hamlet is now a game Posted: 04 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST A few years ago, Ryan North (of Dinosaur Comics fame) set up a Kickstarter campaign for a "choose your own adventure" styled retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet, titled To Be or Not To Be. It enjoyed enormous success, making more than $580,000 in pledges, and the final product turned out great. With all of the backer rewards long since taken care of, it was a surprise to see a new backer update show up almost a year after the previous one. In it, To Be or Not To Be was announced as a videogame, available immediately for PC on Steam and Humble for $11.99. As an owner of the book, I can heartily recommend it. It's filled with a ton of artwork created by a huge list of artists, and in contrast to a lot of recent adventure games, the choices made in To Be or Not To Be can send the narrative in significantly different directions.

Want the (non-metal) Super Mario amiibo? GameStop bundle pre-orders up Posted: 04 Feb 2015 06:45 AM PST There's a lot of hullabaloo around the secret, newly discovered but unannounced gold and silver Mario in the Super Mario amiibo line, but remember the regular Super Mario is temporarily exclusive to the Mario Party 10 bundle. Sure, "temporarily," but then what? Do you really want to risk not having this $13 toy because you were too afraid or fiscally responsible to pony up $60 for the toy and a Mario Party 10 disc what to use as a frisbee or coaster or relationship destroyer? Thought not. Anyways, the bundle is up for pre-order now on GameStop's website.

The Order: 1886 collector's edition is unboxed, under fire Posted: 04 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Third-person shooter protagonists spend a bulk of their time glued to chest-high walls, so it's fitting that the highlight of The Order: 1886's collector's edition depicts this very action. In this unboxing video that PlayStation threw together, a statue of Galahad under fire is the main attraction, alongside a steel case, some DLC, stickers, and the game itself. The biggest surprise comes from not what's inside the box, but the relatively reasonable price tag. The whole thing runs $80 and is a bit underwhelming, but it can be ordered at Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop. The truly nifty sets (like Mortal Kombat X) are the ones that will cost you a bit.

Glasses, tattoos, origins: A taste of Bloodborne's character creator Posted: 04 Feb 2015 06:15 AM PST In this short runthrough of Bloodborne's character editor, IGN was able to create a Harry Potter lookalike now that glasses are an option in the game. That's a worthwhile addition, but it's the "Origin" (i.e., class) option I can't stop thinking about. The names are terrific. If you want to have an "ordinary happy upbringing" with average attributes across the board, "Milquetoast" is perfect. I'm partial to "Troubled Childhood" and "Waste of Skin," myself.

Nintendo manufactured mysterious silver and gold Super Mario amiibo Posted: 04 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST If amiibo have been hard to come by before, it looks like we're in for a whole new kind of scarcity. CPSIA certificates from Nintendo revealed a previously unknown amiibo in the Super Mario line of toys, silver and gold Metal Marios. The Super Mario line Mario is already enough of a challenge to snag, what with it being tied to the Mario Party 10 bundle. Who knows how these gold and silver variants will be made available. Maybe a Club Nintendo (gold and platinum members) swan song? It would beat raiding stores. And those of us who don't care about amiibo could probably sell them for quite a bit. Uhm. I mean, scalpers are bad! CPSIA Certificates indicate Gold, Silver editions of Super Mario amiibo on the way [The Tanooki]

Evolve's live-action trailer is just teens playing hide and seek Posted: 04 Feb 2015 05:45 AM PST Let me go ahead and preemptively dash anyone's hopes that an Evolve live-action trailer might be cool in any conceivable way. It's just some teens running around in the woods with flashlights -- basically a Friday the 13th movie without the sex and a psycho-murderer. When Evolve releases on February 10, chances are that hunting your buddies will be a lot more intriguing than this trailer makes it look. The couch may be a tame setting, but at least the climax won't be your friend jumping in the water and then leaping at you like he has rabies.

Original designer of Ultima Underworld launches Kickstarter for a sequel Posted: 04 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST Looking Glass Studios released some of the industry's perennial favorites. The System Shock series, Thief: The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal Age, and the two Ultima Underworld games are all part of the company's ten-year history. The developer may be gone, but its legacy lives on in OtherSide Entertainment, formed by veteran designer and Looking Glass co-founder Peter Neurath. OtherSide intends its in-development Underworld Ascendant to be a modern sequel to the Ultima Underworld series. The team has permission to use any and all assets from the first two games, except for the Ultima name. The game will not be a "spiritual successor," but a return to the Stygian Abyss of the original series. Unlike most dungeon crawlers, this one will be alive with multiple factions and societies vying with each other. Your actions will have a direct effect on the world, and OtherSide promises a ton of choice when it comes to approaching situations. Ultima Underworld was super innovative for its time, with a fully realized 3D world that was one of the first to attempt a more "lifelike" approach to its world design instead of endless corridors, so hopefully this one will do its predecessor proud and offer the same rich gameplay tradition. OtherSide hopes to raise $600k with its Kickstarter to fund the rest of development, with stretch goals including new enemies, areas, and co-op play. As of the time of this writing, the studio was approaching $100k with 29 days to go. I personally hope it makes it. I'm usually weary of Kickstarter, but a team with this pedigree and a game with this kind of legacy has me pumped. No firm release date has been set for Underworld Ascendant, but the Kickstarter has a tentative delivery date of November 2016. Read more... |
Rare discount on Final Fantasy Type-0 HD pre-orders Posted: 04 Feb 2015 05:15 AM PST PC gamers are used to the usual pre-order discount scene, but console games are another thing entirely, rarely seeing discounts until a few months after release. Thankfully, NewEgg still happily takes your pre-order dollars for un-tested and un-reviewed games. Woo. Now through February 5, several games are on sale, including next week's release of Evolve. More notable, however, are rare deals on Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Just a note: NewEgg isn't like Amazon in terms of release-day delivery, so if you're fine with waiting 2-4 additional days in return for some extra cash in your wallet, this is a good way to go. Confirmed! You can play as dinosaurs in LEGO Jurassic World Posted: 04 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST "Imagine playing as the ominous LEGO T. rex, roaming the grounds of Isla Nublar, smashing LEGO bricks and battling with other dinosaurs -- this game is bound to bring out the kid in all of us," says TT Games managing director Tom Stone of LEGO Jurassic World. You're damn right, Stone. As a follow-up to the release info -- the game is out this summer for PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and 3DS -- here's a teaser trailer. It made me chuckle. Maybe you will too. LEGO Jurassic World covers the events of all four films and lets players "fully explore" Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna as well as collect dinosaur DNA to "create and customize species." I haven't played a game based on this property since the 16-bit days, but this one sounds unmissable.

Overture melted my face, has a free demo on Steam Posted: 04 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST Overture is the latest retro-inspired offering from Black Shell Games, the talented development team behind the ASCII RPG SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition. It's a charming game, with an adorably chunky pixel art style and an infectious chiptune soundtrack from Brazilian producer Rafael Langoni Smith. Proving that the studio isn't content to just stick to one specific approach to game design, Black Shell's second commercial release on Steam goes in a completely different direction, both visually and genre-wise. The team describe the title as an "action-adventure roguelike," drawing inspiration from beloved games like Diablo and The Binding of Isaac. While it does have some of the familiar flavors of the aforementioned titles, it does so without the need to mimic them. Overture is without a doubt its own game entirely. Its addictive, fast-paced and frenetic twin-stick shooter feel and almost sensory overload-inducing loot and treasure drops are an absolute joy to experience. Seriously, just look at the game's trailer and you'll understand where I'm coming from. It's amazing! Currently the title boasts twenty-four playable character classes, loot drops galore, randomly generated dungeons, and as mentioned before, a delightful chiptune soundtrack. If you're interested in giving Overture a go but on the fence about forking over the $4.99 asking price, Black Shell Games has you covered! It recently added a free demo on the title's Steam page. So go on then, shower yourself in floating text damage indicators, free of charge! Oh, speaking of free! We've got one Steam code for the game that we'll be giving away this evening courtesy of Black Shell Games, so make sure you check your private messages tonight to see if you're the winner. Very Quick Tips: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D Posted: 04 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Majora's Mask may have problems, but the three-day cycle concept is not one of them. While some people didn't like the fact that they had to "start all over" after the cycle repeated, that's not really the case. Review: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D Posted: 04 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is unlike any other Zelda game in the series. For instance, there's no sign of the franchise's classic villain Ganon, and no Zelda outside of a quick flashback reference. It's also a decidedly darker affair, with strong themes of depression, anxiety, and general angst due to the impending end of the world. Heck, there's even straight-up voyeurism quest and the assumption of dead people's identities. Majora has a lot of really cool ideas, and most of them are augmented by the slight upgrades found in Majora's Mask 3D. Read more... |
