Kill immortals for Death in Death's Gambit Posted: 27 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST Death's Gambit is a beautiful Castlevania-like title just revealed by developer White Rabbit that pits you as Death's agent sent to end the lives of immortals. Clearly a bit of influence from Shadow of the Colossus can be spotted in the trailer as well. No specifics on a release date have been announced, but you can follow the developers Twitch channel or check out the game at PAX East next week. I'll also be there, so you can check me out checking out the game as well, like a live Beard View!
Dtoid streams Resident Evil 2 just for the heck of it Posted: 27 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST The first episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2 was released this week, making it the fourth Resident Evil game to have a "2" somewhere in the title. I believe the second was Resident Evil Survivor 2: Code Veronica and the third may have been Resident Evil Outbreak File #2. Confused? Well it gets worse. The first Resident Evil game with a "2" in the name, also known as Resident Evil 2, happened to be split into four different scenarios, Claire scenario A, Leon scenario A, Claire scenario B and Leon scenario B. So that's technically four campaigns in the one game called Resident Evil 2. Tonight we're featuring a live stream of Resident Evil 2 Leon B scenario, care of guest live stream personality Claire Lara. That's right, a woman named Claire is about to start her first ever stream with Destructoid, starting with a game about a man who's first day of work involved killing a whole bunch of zombies with... a woman named Claire. This is seriously freaking me out, guys. The broadcast is set to start at around 10pm Destructoid time, so jump in the stream, get in the chat, and get to know Claire as she checks out one of the games that helped define an entire genre.
How do you Do It? I do it with action figures on Steam Posted: 27 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST There sure have been a lot of free games coming out on Steam these days, and how do you Do It? is probably my favorite. You're an 11-year-old girl and you've just seen your mother having sex. Now you're hell bent on figuring out just how that works by using your action figures. Go grab the game from Steam and make your action figures hump to your heart's content while pondering aloud if you're doing it right. I'm really hoping for someone to make a classic action figures mod. Thundercats, HO!
Harebrained Schemes' new adventure has shark men Posted: 27 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST "A third-person action game with shark men? Okay, I'll let them know." I ever so foolishly forgot that Shadowrun Returns maker Harebrained Schemes has Necropolis, "a game of brutal combat and survival," in its pipeline. The latest gifs 'n' pics are fabulous. Promises of an "ever-changing dungeon" don't do much for me these days, but Necropolis' low-poly art and "combat system based on timing and animation" have me on board like whoa. There's also an interesting backstory brewing here -- the Necropolis calls to adventurers in hopes that it can feed off their energy -- but I'll leave you to Rob's prior in-depth coverage of the setting. Harebrained Schemes is bringing Necropolis to PAX East next weekend. Booth #10187. Enjoy.
Destroy Internet trolls as Social Justice Warriors on Steam Posted: 27 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST Take on the role of a paladin, a cleric, a mage, or a rogue to fight Internet trolls. In this satirical role-playing game, you tear down the reputation and sanity of your enemies armed only with a keyboard and your wits. Social Justice Warriors will be available today on Steam. I've actually played a version of this some time back; it reminds me of my Twitter feed on a daily basis. You don't get XP on Twitter, just headaches from all the facepalming.
Zombie Army Trilogy video tells us what Zombie Army Trilogy is Posted: 27 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST The zombie saturation of the current videogame landscape will soon see another mindless meat shooter with the release of Zombie Army Trilogy this March. As if the literally hundreds of other zombie-themed games weren't enough for you, here's another chance to feel superior in your humanity. The video above is for the PS4 version, but the game also will be out on Xbox One and PC. Remember when everyone was tired of WWII games and they stopped making those for a while? Yeah, it's starting to feel like that with zombie games. But what do I know? Maybe this one is different. Maybe this one will show us why we still need more zombie games.
Destructoid Forums: The diabolical truth Posted: 27 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST [Did you know we have forums? Most people gravitate immediately to the front page comments or cblogs but Orlion spares nothing in his dark view of one of Destructoid's most enduring places of kinship. Remember to take everything here with a grain of salt because only a purifying circle will keep the dread demons at bay -Striderhoang] Not long ago 'twas that I discovered one who has claimed to be your guide. One who has claimed to show you what lies beneath...
| Get double the pleasure with your OlliOlli Nintendo purchase Posted: 27 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Much like when Mario vs. Donkey Kong launches on March 5, those looking to get OlliOlli on Wii U or 3DS will unlock the game for both systems. This is an outstanding trend that PlayStation fans have been enjoying for quite a while with the Vita and its big brother consoles, so it's good to see this happening for others. Players will be able to purchase OlliOlli on March 5 from the eShop. If you have yet to try it out and own either of these systems, then I highly recommend you do. It's a fantastic game. | 'Ultimate' version of La-Mulana hits PS Vita next week Posted: 27 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST The PlayStation Vita and La-Mulana have long seemed like a good match, but it's taken some time for the two to hook up. Just kiss already! Rising Star Games and Pygmy Studio will have the "ultimate version" of this punishing platforming adventure out for Vita on Tuesday, March 3. Pygmy worked with Nigoro, the creator of La-Mulana, to "tighten up the game's puzzle logic [and] enhance the overall experience," according to producer and art director Hisashi Koshimizu. Specifically, there's now a Monster Bestiary, improved translations and signposting, and "some of the puzzles and obstacles have been altered slightly." The team had planned to create two separate difficulty modes for La-Mulana EX -- one for original players / purists, one for newbies -- but decided to consolidate the versions "in a way that improves the experience for everyone." And how about that new logo? Slick. La-Mulana EX Out Next Week, The "EX" stands for "Extra" [PlayStation Blog] |
BlazBlue: Battle Cards looking to take that card crown Posted: 27 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST The BlazBlue franchise continues to diversify its portfolio. Whether it be a mobile rhythm game or a visual novel, the series has grown from its fight-game roots. With BlazBlue: Battle Cards, that trend continues -- but only for the iPad. As similar titles like Hearthstone continue to succeed, this is clearly a genre ripe for the picking. If you're dying to try this out, we've been assured a demo for the game will arrive in the next few weeks. In the meantime, check out the first official gameplay footage for this card battler.
Friday Night Fights - Find Your Happy Spot Posted: 27 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST Don't have much to say today. Was delivered some news by my doctor that isn't sitting well with me. Especially since it was delivered in letter form and not even to my face. I'm not dying or anything, so no need for worried comments/PMs. Just feeling crappy. Hopefully some gaming with you all, will cheer me up. Take care and have a great weekend everyone!
Assassin's Creed will feature more modern day segments in the future Posted: 27 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST The amusing glitch-fest that was Assassin's Creed Unity didn't intentionally eschew the series' whacked out modern day narrative. In fact, more dalliances into now-time were planned for Unity, Assassin's Creed lead writer Darby McDevitt explained in a Ubisoft livestream. "There was a plan for a little more modern day in Unity," he said. "A plan. Nothing that was actually cut." It was just too much work (like animating women) for a new game on new hardware. "To create a city, for instance, or even part of a city, would require six months of work by many, many artists, designers, modellers," he explained. "And then you'd need gameplay systems that didn't feel like you were just fencing." McDevitt noted that Brotherhood's town of Monteriggioni, "only came about because [we] were able to reuse Monteriggioni from [Assassin's Creed II]. So the future -- and this is the plan -- is to smartly reuse things so we can have a more robust modern day." They'll need to smartly reused assets to keep the series going to exhaust the span the series' writers have put together. "We've created 500, 600, 700 years worth of history that we hope to start teasing out for the next 10, 20 years or however long we're around." Future Assassin's Creed games will have "more robust modern day" than Unity [Eurogamer]
Modern art meets roguelike FPS in Fancy Skulls Posted: 27 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Fancy Skulls is a challenging and visually striking first-person shooter that features random level generation, permadeath, and a distinct art style straddling the line between looking like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and exhibits you might find installed at the Museum of Modern Art. The game's creator, independent designer Tequibo, describes the protagonist as "an immortal creature" whose goal is to "escape capture from a collection where [it] is the main treasure." It's a straightforward premise, much like we find in similar titles such as Terri Vellmann's fantastic roguelike shooter Heavy Bullets. Fancy Skulls differentiates itself not only with its unique visual style but with its weapons. Each weapon type functions differently than the others, and every weapon can be modified with options that provide interesting new gameplay variables. Examples of mods include backpedaling to generate ammunition, scoring twelve hits without missing to earn money, last two bullets in a magazine do double damage, and firing while airborne costs no ammo. Fancy Skulls is a hell of a lot fun and definitely scratches that itch if you're looking for short bursts of challenging first-person gunplay. If you're interested in learning more about this Early Access title, you can do so on the game's store page on Steam or on the title's official website.
Chop looks nice and furry in GTA V for PC Posted: 27 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST April 14, 2015. Barring any extra delays, that's when Grand Theft Auto V will release for PC. Rockstar released 15 screenshots today that aren't making our wait any easier. Good job, people responsible for capturing these scenes -- you correctly assumed I'd want to see how Chop the rottweiler looks in the PC version. My mind goes straight to the animals, always.
Beautiful UE4-powered shooter AIPD coming to GDC Posted: 27 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Artificial Intelligence Police Department, or AIPD for short, is an upcoming top-down, twin-stick shooter from Frankfurt-based studio Blazing Badger. It recently released this luminous new trailer for its debut title in preparation for this year's GDC in San Francisco. If you're attending the conference, make sure to drop by the Unreal Engine booth to try it out the prototype for yourself. AIPD's running on Unreal Engine 4, and I'm loving what the studio is doing with it. Although, the game is going for a retro-inspired look, the lighting being used makes the visuals pop and helps give the title a very contemporary appearance. Blazing Badger describes the look as an "homage to the '80s neon art styles, pioneered by games like Mine Storm on the Vectrex console." Feature films such as Tron are also listed as influencing the game's aesthetic. Core features include configurable game modes (up to 100,000 possible combinations), customizable ship loadouts, four-person cooperative play, online leaderboards, and timed challenges. The company says that AIPD should be available "soon" and lists a probable May release window on the title's PR page. Planned platforms include PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Damn, shouldn't have spoiled this Bloodborne boss Posted: 27 Feb 2015 06:15 AM PST Attempting to go into Bloodborne blind? I feel you. It's not something I can pull off consistently given the nature of this job -- that's one of the big tradeoffs -- but I still try with select titles. The PlayStation Blog has posted images and basic details for one of the game's bosses, and I regret looking at it. It's cool yet terrifying. Nito, you might even say. If you don't care about spoilers or simply lack self-control to leave while there's still time (there is!), well then, take a look. The header image is a family-friendly representation of what the boss will do to us. SPOILERS: New Bloodborne Boss Revealed [PlayStation Blog]
$8 Valkyria Chronicles returns, big Sega sale including Shining Force II, Golden Axe Posted: 27 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Based on recent reports, Sega is now focusing on digital titles. So it's not much of a surprise that Green Man Gaming has launched a huge Sega sale with discounts on recent titles such as Valkyria Chronicles and Alien: Isolation up to 50% off (these two expire tomorrow at 11AM EST). Some of the older Genesis classics are also available in a 24-hour madness sale, with choice picks such as Shining Force II, Phantasy Star II, and Golden Axe available for only $1.20 a piece (take note that most are SecuROM titles and not Steam keys). If you want to make sure the Genesis titles are Steam keys, we'd check out the Megadrive Collections Series 1 to Series 5 -- they are on sale for $3 each after coupon and include all the noteworthy titles.
Multimedia icon Leonard Nimoy has passed away Posted: 27 Feb 2015 05:45 AM PST Videogames aren't the first thing that most people associate with actor/writer/director Leonard Nimoy, but he made his mark on the medium over the years, providing narration for such classics as Civilization IV and Seaman and performing in the Kingdom Hearts series as villain Xehanort. This is all in addition to his work on multiple Star Trek games, most often in the role of Mr. Spock, the iconic character he helped create in 1966. Nimoy played the Vulcan in games, television, animation, and feature films for over 40 years. While many actors might resent being so closely associated with a specific character, Nimoy appeared to embrace it. Although we can't choose what others will appreciate us for, we can choose to appreciate that others see fit to give us their attention, regardless if it's for directing a movie, telling our life's story, or playing a pointy-eared alien on television. A life long fan of sci-fi and fantasy, Nimoy also voiced Galvatron in Transformers: The Movie and helped create the short-lived comic book series Primortals, which ran from 1995 until 1997. As much as I love the man's acting, Nimoy's surprise turn as a pop singer with this bubbly tune about Bilbo Baggins might be the thing that endears him to me the most. A self-aware, intelligent, thoughtful, and compassionate voice for geek culture, Leonard Nimoy will be missed by his friends, family, and millions of fans across the world.
Sublevel Zero is your new 6DoF roguelike shooter Posted: 27 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST Sublevel Zero is England-based studio Sigtrap's new roguelike reimagining of the first-person, six-degree-of-freedom shooter. Influences on the game's design swing from classic 6DoF titles like Descent to modern roguelike shooters such as Test3 Projects' Teleglitch. The studio says the game's combat will be driven by "modern looting and crafting," which I interpret to mean random item drops and buffs that will upgrade your ship's arsenal and defense systems. However, the crafting system has left me curious, and a bit concerned. Typically, I dislike crafting mechanics in my games, especially those that are action-oriented. But if it's incorporated in a smartly designed, efficient, and immersion-maintaining manner, it could possibly work out quite well. As exhibited in the video above, Sublevel Zero sports an exceptionally fetching, stylized, lo-fidelity art style. It seems to seamlessly blend aspects of Descent's chunky, '90s-era look with more contemporary aesthetics found in newer 6DoF titles, like Cadenza Interactive's delightful Retrovirus. It works well and gives the game a unique visual identity. Staying faithful to its roguelike inspirations, there are no saves in Sublevel Zero and it also prominently features permadeath. Depending on your persuasion, this will either be an extreme turnoff or an incredibly appealing design choice. As for me, it's most definitely the latter. Sublevel Zero is currently on track for release in summer 2015 and is planned for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. If you'd like to stay up to date with the game, you can find out more by visiting the game's website as well as following the studio on Twitter.
Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late out today in Europe Posted: 27 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late is now available at retailers across Europe, NIS America tells us. The PS3 fighter will see a digital release next week, starting March 4. For more information about Under Night In-Birth you can check out our review, where I described it was an "intelligent, tactical fighting game" occupying a niche between "breakneck air-dashers and slower, more grounded titles like Street Fighter." French Bread and Arc System Works really did a great job with this one.
Terry Cavanagh's new game takes on scummy advertising Posted: 27 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST First off, I recognize the irony in posting this on a website that gets most of its income from advertisements. Terry Cavanagh, best known for the punishingly difficult VVVVVV and Super Hexagon, has a new browser game out with biting criticism of the advertisement and marketing industry. Grab Them by the Eyes stars a street food vendor named Jay who must resort to buying an endless wave of ever flashier signs in order to attract attention for his business. The game plays with some simple card drafting rules. Signs can have various text, colors, borders, and effects, and each of those elements contributes some number of customers to the day's totals. Sign elements are drafted where the left-most one is cheapest, but players can pay an increasing amount for potentially higher output signs. Of course, new is always better, so each time a sign piece is used, it devalues for the future. Really, aside from the on-the-spot rendering of obnoxiously animated signs, this could be a simple physical card game. In contrast to most of Cavanagh's other work, Grab Them by the Eyes is not particularly difficult. It only requires understanding of the card drafting rules and a modicum of foresight to beat out competitor Filthy Burger, but it seems like the focus is on the message rather than the challenge. Indeed, players who stick around through the entire in-game week (roughly ten minutes of play time) will be treated to a not-so-surprising ending: customers don't care whose burgers to buy, they just want to go to the place that has the most eye-catching signs.
Final Fantasy XIV's Gold Saucer is amazing if you like Triple Triad or Chocobo Racing Posted: 27 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST The Gold Saucer is finally a part of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and it's glorious. That classic music returns, as do the iconic Triple Triad and Chocobo Racing activities. It's amazing how much content Square Enix has added to its newest MMO over time, more than justifying the subscription fee. It is living proof that not every MMO has to go free-to-play. I had a chance to take the Saucer for a spin this week, and was pretty happy with what I found. So long as you buy into the two big draws, you will be too.
There is a lot to unpack from this Mortal Kombat X story trailer Posted: 27 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST Ostensibly this story trailer for Mortal Kombat X is supposed to set the stage for the latest generation of Earthrealm warriors' struggle against the forces of Outworld, but we all know what the real hype is about -- character reveals! The trailer stars several descendents of past MK warriors we haven't seen before, including Jax's daughter, Jacqueline Briggs, Takashi Takeda, the son of Kenshi (no, he isn't blind), and Kung Lao's boy, Kung Jin. Along with Cassie Cage, this ragtag group seems to be the core set of good guys for the latest battle. They'll be going up against a familiar adversary. Mileena the cannibalistic ninja clone will be rejoining the cast in a much larger role than she has previously enjoyed. Eagle-eyed fans will also spot the return of Shinnok (groan) and Sindel in small blink-and-you'll-miss-them cameos. It's unknown yet if they will be playable characters or just flashback fodder, but if they are bothering to make up character models for them I wouldn't be surprised if they make it into the game proper. Aside from that we've got the old MK 3-style Sub-Zero, a maskless Scorpion fighting a baby Scorpion (?), some cowboy looking dude who seems to be chilling with the Special Forces group, and everyone's favorite purple ninja, Rain! For less than two minutes of footage, that's a lot of reveals! I've already watched it five or six times, but I bet I've still missed one or two things. Can you spot anyone else?
Beard View: The Legend of Legacy Posted: 27 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST The credits for The Legend of Legacy read like a who's who of JRPGs, from the composer of Final Fantasy XIII to the writer of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. While the game is eye and ear candy, it is brutally unforgiving in the difficulty department. The only way I ever see this doing well here is if they add a "Easy for American babies" mode, though maybe I just suck. In other news, for upcoming Beard View episodes I've mostly got import 3DS games lined up and one titillating Japanese-only PS4 exclusive. If you have any suggestions for upcoming games that I should check out, be them import or not, please let me know in the comments!
| Forgotten Memories drags Silent Hill 2 alumni back to the world of survival horror Posted: 27 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST Psychoz Interactive's survival horror Forgotten Memories has been flying under the radar for some time now, but all that seems likely to change with the recent cast announcements of Guy Cihi and Dave Schaufele (Silent Hill 2's James Sunderland and Eddie Dombrowski). Forgotten Memories focuses on Rose Hawkins, a cop investigating the disappearence of child in a dilapidated Massachusetts asylum, the kind of place where nothing could possiblie [sic] go wrong. Guy will be playing Rose's partner, Nathan, whilst Dave is line to play Greg Anderson, the asylum's guard and an "important character from the Forgotten Memories universe." Their words, not mine. Whatever you may think of the old school gameplay, this one should be pretty interesting for Guy Cihi's return to voice acting. Sort of reminds me of how Matt Hannon's coming back for Samurai Cop 2. You can also catch his thoughts about the game and Silent Hill 2 on the latest Best Friends Podcast. Coming in Q1/Q2 of 2015, Forgotten Memories will be released on Wii U, PC, iOS, and PS Vita. | Posted: 27 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST Developing a Gears of War-like cover shooter for Nintendo 3DS is unconventional, but that's just what VD-Dev did with Ironfall: Invasion. Featuring both local and online multiplayer, as well as an 11-stage campaign, the project seems fairly ambitious for the handheld, and as you'd expect, there are mixed results. While multiplayer turned out well enough, the campaign is a mess. |
Posted: 27 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST In a lot of ways, The Deer God is a love letter to nature. The idea was born from the developers' childhood memories of playing in the woods and seeing wild deer, and that admiration of the outdoors is quite apparent. The forests, fields, and other natural locations are simply gorgeous, and playing as a deer is as soothing as you might expect. However, these tranquil moments eventually give way to some rather unfortunate gameplay decisions. I got a good sense of what the developers were going for, and in some respects they succeeded. But at times, it felt like they had too many ideas, or were trying to please too many people, resulting in a few areas of gameplay that fall flat or don't seem to fit in very well. It's still a very charming adventure, but it's hard to look past its flaws.
Bungie adds support for moving Destiny items between characters online and in-app Posted: 27 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST Chalk this up to "it should have been in at launch," but you can now transfer items between characters in Destiny. The process isn't perfect though since it isn't in-game, but you can do it by way of the companion app or Bungie.net, which is a start. Basically all you do is select your character's inventory (or the vault) by way of the interface, and then you can equip weapons and move anything around, even if you're in the middle of a mission (the only caveat is you can't insta-equip mid-mission, but you can still just move it to your active gear). But let's talk about the biggest update of all -- splitting stacks! Previously it was impossible to split items, leading to massive piles of 200 or more materials being switched between characters over and over. Now you can split it equally among all your characters if you want -- no need to go to the Tower three times every time you want to switch. Weekly Update [Bungie]

EU FNF: Tumbleweeds and Marmaduke Posted: 26 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST Welcome back to EU FNF! This week we still only have a couple games going, but nothing wrong with a slow burn. EU FNF was gone for so long, it'll take a minute to get bruin again. Don't worry though, I'm in this for the long haul. Also, I totally forgot to tell Panza how to do the blog, so bear with us as we get that going again as well. Allow me to take paws now and congratulate our very own GlowBear and Stevil for shedding their username flesh and rising up like phoenixes to become the beings know as Claire Sharkey and Stephen Turner, respectively. Bow to their black and white visages and await their writings with a UK slant. All the recent community hires on the writing side have been so awesome to see. Strider and I are the only ones on the community side, so sorry folks. You're screwed there. On that note, let's get to some gaming for this week. Have a great weekend everyone!
