| Smiles are scary in We Happy Few Posted: 26 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST The creepy masked woman teasing Compulsion's new game was a start. Now there's an announcement trailer -- one of the best in recent memory -- and a name: We Happy Few. "Set in a drug-fueled, retrofuturistic city in an alternative 1960s England, you'll have to blend in with its other inhabitants, who don't take kindly to people who don't abide by their not-so-normal rules." Strong premise. Hopefully there will be equally strong gameplay to back it up. The studio says it is showing We Happy Few in a "way, way earlier" state than its last project, the shadowy platformer Contrast, in an effort to hear "great ideas" from the community before this next title is released, not after. "Starting at PAX, we're going to be opening up development to people who want to get involved. This means getting people playing the game early on, and pushing out constant content updates based on community feedback." I didn't play Contrast, but if the intrigue holds, I'm down for We Happy Few. |
| Is this amiibo white and gold or blue and black? Posted: 26 Feb 2015 01:45 PM PST Guys please help me. Is this amiibo white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the fuck out. |
| Can 2015 be the year of clay, please? Posted: 26 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST Ooh, a chance to talk about clay animation and armatures without straying away from videogames. Better jump on it. This video takes us behind the scenes of Armikrog, a point-and-click adventure that made it through Kickstarter in 2013 and should be playable before too long here. I had honestly forgotten the game was still in production. Coming off of the visual splendor of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, which I don't want to end, that's a real treat to hear. Instead of tapping on a pink puffball, we'll get to boss around Tommynaut, an astronaut who "tends to move in what he thinks are heroic poses." He also has a blind alien dog sidekick. Should be entertaining. Armikrog is headed to Windows, Mac, and Linux this spring, and Wii U eventually. Glad to see console support, but I don't want to miss out by staring at the GamePad screen the whole time. |
| Extrasolar's mobile interface got a slick update Posted: 26 Feb 2015 12:30 PM PST Extrasolar has always been a tough sell for hardcore gamers, in my eyes. Though it was one of my top games of last year, most readers tune out when they see a description like "free-to-play science simulator," and going any further into why it's so good spoils it. With an update to the mobile interface today, it may lower the barrier to entry even further for some. As a browser game, playing on mobile has always been an option, but now it has been designed and optimized for the platform. The map now has a pinch-to-zoom feature and menus are swipeable. I played around with it for a bit on my Nexus 4, and it runs great. I still think I'd prefer playing on my PC, since the high resolution vistas looks so great on a bigger screen, but it's nice to know that when the next season becomes available, I'll be able to set up photos while I'm out and about. |
| Tokyo Xanadu is a new Vita RPG from Nihon Falcom Posted: 26 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Tokyo Xanadu is the latest project from Ys and The Legend of Heroes studio Nihon Falcom. The role-playing game is a departure from your classic Falcom fantasy setting, given the story takes place in modern-day Tokyo. Don't worry though, there are still plenty of otherworldly things going on here, as our hero Kou Tokisaka discovers an alternate dimension teeming with demons. Falcom plans to release the PlayStation Vita exclusive in Japan this summer. A western release hasn't been confirmed just yet, but XSEED seems to have the inside track on everything Falcom. |
| Pokédex Animated starts things off right with Cubone Posted: 26 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST YouTuber Versiris began a new series of videos introducing Pokémon through adorably animated Pokédex entries, narrated by a GLaDOS-like voice. The first entry features my personal favorite Pokémon, Cubone. Cubone's story is really sad, so things get a little depressing for the first video. He's so cute, though! Poor Cubone... I just want to give him a big old hug. Which Pokédex entry would you like to see animated? You can vote on which Pokémon is covered in the next video, but it looks like Versiris is sticking with the first generation for now. Sorry, Gardevoir fans! |
| There's a max Rupee glitch in Hyrule Warriors Posted: 26 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST 9,999,999 Rupees in Hyrule Warriors. Yeah, I could go for that. The game's community has been working tirelessly to figure out a newly discovered glitch that involves slaying a giant boss (King Dodongo, Gohma, etc.) with a weapon that has the Rupees+ skill attached. The goal is to lower the monster's weak point gauge and then kill it, usually from a distance, without activating the weak point smash attack you'd normally use as the finishing blow. Problem is, this glitch is inconsistent. There's an element of randomness at play here, or so it would seem. If you're thinking of watching videos or reading instructions and "doing exactly what they did," be warned. I didn't have any luck in the half hour or so I spent trying last night. Also, it looks as if patch 1.6.0 for Hyrule Warriors (which is out now in Japan and goes live in North America on March 12) doesn't tamper with the glitch. No need to rush here. |
| Square Enix: Life is Strange Episode 2 delayed Posted: 26 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST The second chapter of Life is Strange has been delayed, a Square Enix representative confirmed to Destructoid today. We've inquired as to when the publisher now plans to release Episode 2 and will update this article when we have more information. Speaking with Destructoid at a press event prior to the launch of Episode 1, developer Dontnod informed us each installment would arrive precisely six weeks apart. If you'd like to know more about Life is Strange you can read Brett Makedonski's review of the debut chapter or have a listen to our round table discussion about it on the latest episode Podtoid. |
| Review: Pneuma: Breath of Life Posted: 26 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST Pneuma: Breath of Life is, through and through, a creationist tale. There's no theory of evolution, carbon dating, or Darwinism to cause debate. It's one god and the world that he brought into existence mere seconds earlier. As it turns out, being the only inhabitant of a world is a dull affair. |
| Posted: 26 Feb 2015 09:45 AM PST I got this email earlier today. But it is too late, Best Buy. It's always too late for retailer exclusive amiibo. Earlier today Nintendo also tweeted out a link to the Gold Mario Walmart listing -- about an hour after it sold out in 10 minutes. Retailers may not be able to meet demand, but it's Nintendo that made these deals in the first place. Nintendo, cut it out with the exclusive amiibo until you can get your shit together, or start producing AR cards. |
| Sega-Capcom crossover comic 'Worlds Unite' features characters we haven't seen in years Posted: 26 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Originally billed as another crossover of the Sonic and Mega Man universes in the vein of their Worlds Collide storyline, Archie Comics' upcoming Worlds Unite crossover is shaping up to be so much more. Not only will Sonic and Mega Man be featured prominently, characters from franchises spanning Sega and Capcom's rosters will make appearances. Over the last four days information has trickled out as to which characters will be featured in the story, culminating in today's final reveal. |
| Brutalities revealed for Mortal Kombat X Posted: 26 Feb 2015 09:15 AM PST Brutalities are back in Mortal Kombat X, and there will be "well over 100" according to series creator Ed Boon, a fact that makes me wonder just how many characters the game will have. Originally, brutalities were long combos ending with your opponent exploding into bones, but now they look more like the fatalities of old and less like the cinematic new ones. Brutalities also seem far easier now as they are automatically performed by completing a match with specific conditions, which is great news since I've never been able to pull one off. |
| Guild Wars 2 adding first-person mode Posted: 26 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST Typically, MMOs are third-person affairs and for good reason. Whenever you find yourself in any dangerous persistent world, you want a good idea of what's around you to have the best possible view of the battlefield. Well, some aren't content with that. Some just want to have it all. And for those who want it all, ArenaNet has announced that Guild Wars 2 will be adding a first-person camera view on March 10. Players will be able to get a preview of this new visual mode on Friday during the studio's Ready Up livestream on Twitch. Here's a breakdown of the changes happening in March according to ArenaNet: |
| Shelter 2's latest trailer will thaw the coldest of hearts Posted: 26 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST I was reminded of Might and Delight's upcoming abstract adventure game Shelter 2 the other evening as I was winding my way up into the snowy, North Carolina highlands at dusk. As I made the last few icy turns approaching my destination, I looked out the window to my left and noticed a muscular feline form slipping into the treeline. It paused for a moment, its body standing stock still, only turning its head to track the movement of my vehicle as I passed by. It was, of course, a bobcat -- the pointy, tufted ears and wiry frame a dead giveaway. As I drove on, I began to think about Shelter 2 and daydreamed for a moment about what the game might be like. I suppose I don't have all that long to wait to find out, though. As Jordan posted earlier, after a minor change in release dates, Shelter 2 is now on track for March 9, 2015. Might and Delight has a lovely new trailer to coincide with the opening of pre-orders for the game, which you can see above. It follows the journey of a group of adult lynx as they travel together across the snowy plains. We're also treated to scenes of beautiful mountain vistas and the gorgeously rendered lowlands, and an unusual scene where a lone lynx walks through the forest in darkness, strangely humanoid constellations shining in the night sky above. Of particular note is the scene of the mother lynx and her adorable litter of kits nestled together to stay warm in their cozy den. It isn't that often videogames can elicit a genuine emotional response from me, but the pull on my heartstrings in this instance was undeniable. Those who pre-order Shelter 2 on Steam and GOG.com will unlock an alternate appearance for the mother lynx based on the Iberian variant of the cat, as well as a copy of the full musical score, written and performed by Retro Family. Currently, there's a 10% discount for pre-purchase and an additional 20% off for those who own the original Shelter. |
| Far Cry 4 somehow gets more dangerous in Valley of the Yetis Posted: 26 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST If Far Cry 4's jaunt through Kyrat serves as any indication, the Himalayas are an incredibly dangerous place. Whatever isn't trying to maul you is trying to shoot bullets at you. It's like being caught between a rock and a hard place, but it's more literally like being caught between a ferocious tiger and a fully-automatic machine gun. Somehow, Far Cry 4's Valley of the Yetis raises those stakes. The DLC, which releases on March 10, picks up after Ajay crashes a helicopter on a mountain ridge and has to wander into a nearby encampment to survive. As if the crazy cult followers weren't enough to deal with, there are goddamn yetis trying to separate Ajay's limbs from his body. In hindsight, maybe dealing with the occasional honey badger wasn't so bad. |
| Hyrule Warriors' play-as-Ganon mode looks broken and awesome Posted: 26 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST In the next and seemingly final piece of DLC for Hyrule Warriors, we'll be able to punch bosses in the face as the biggest boss of all, Ganon, in his own separate mode. I'm eager to let my anger out on the Imprisoned, that jerk. Toes will be smashed. The camera will peace out. Fun times for all. There's also a separate boss rush mode, which doesn't sound too appealing considering how painfully repetitive those fights become once you're hundreds of hours into the game, but I'll at least play to unlock some new costumes. Speaking of which, Ganondorf, you feeling okay? The Boss Pack DLC is now available in Japan and will release on March 12, 2015 in North America as part of the season pass. Alternatively, you can nab it as standalone for $2.99. A free game update is also on the way. Most notably, it'll address those pesky load times, raise the level cap to 255, and flesh out the Apothecary with mixtures that cause the weak point gauge to deplete more quickly, increase attacks against giant bosses, and absorb magic from bosses. |
| BlazBlue spin-off Xblaze 2 coming west this summer Posted: 26 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Xblaze Lost: Memories is coming west this summer, Aksys Games just announced. The "RPG-style" visual novel is the follow-up to XBlaze Code: Embryo, which Aksys localized for western audiences last spring. This PS3 and Vita title serves as a continuation of that story, but has additional gameplay mechanics. This time around Arc System Works has mixed in dungeon exploration and puzzle elements alongside the diverging plot lines with multiple endings.
You can check out Xblaze Lost: Memories' official website here for more information. |
| Y2K is a surrealist fantasy told through the lens of a Murakami-loving hipster Posted: 26 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Y2K began with protagonist Alex Eggleston returning to his his hometown from college. I watched him gaze out of bus windows until the scene shifted to him sharing a seat with a man in a panda costume. This was jarring enough to give Alex reason to look completely shaken and offended, and as the jaunty soundtrack suggested, should have felt super quirky and weird. It didn't. |
| Capcom pulls switcheroo with Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Posted: 26 Feb 2015 06:45 AM PST No stranger to controversy, Capcom is again making the headlines of popular gaming websites after delisting an offline cooperative mode that was advertised for the PC version of the episodic Resident Evil: Revelations 2 prior to its launch. It's an unfortunate situation for those who were looking forward to playing the game locally with a friend. Our own Chris Carter seemed impressed with the feature in his review of the Xbox One version, going so far as to say that "local co-op is where it's at." The features list for Revelations 2 on Steam shows assistive co-op play as being available, but the entry has been edited to remove any mention of co-op functionality after the game's launch. What customers see today when ordering:
What customers saw before when pre-ordering:
Alongside the updated feature listing, Capcom has also added a disclaimer at the bottom stating that online Raid Mode co-op functionality will be added at a "later date" and notes that "The PC version does not support offline co-op play in the Campaign or Raid Mode." |
| Payday 2 welcomes Jacket from Hotline Miami to the crew Posted: 26 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST You might not know this, but murderers love cross-brand synergy. That's why hot on the heels of some John Wick co-marketing, Payday 2 is getting a rash of neon-soaked DLC to celebrate the release of Hotline Miami 2. Remorseless spree killers have to stick together after all. With the purchase of Hotline Miami 2 on Steam, Payday 2 players will gain access to a dufflebag's worth of new Hotline-inspired masks. Spendy criminals who purchase HM 2's Special Edition however will be getting a little more, unlocking the Jacket character pack. He comes with his own weapons (a gussied-up Mac-10 and blood-speckled hammer), a new “Sociopath” perk deck, can only communicate with snippets of conversation played back on a cassette tape recorder, and totally won't look out of place next to three other guys wearing identical suits. The full list of unlocks can be found here. The only thing I want to know is if we can replace the regular tape recorder with a Home Alone 2-style Talkboy. In fact, now that I think about it, Kevin McCallister does tick off a distressing number of sociopathic personality traits. He probably wouldn't mind jumping aboard the co-marketing gravy train with the rest of these lunatics. In a surprisingly consumer-friendly move, Australian heisters who won't be able to legally partake in this crazy cross-promotion killing spree (because HM 2 is banned there due to REASONS) will be able to get the DLC for free by hitting up Overkill's support with proof of their Australian citizenship. Daww, behind all the hostage taking and gangland executions, they really do care! |
| We've got to go to Mars in Offworld Trading Company Posted: 26 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST In a future where corporate greed has depleted the Earth's resources, humanity has taken to space to acquire the goods needed for survival. The asteroid belt was supposed to be the great salvation, an almost limitless bastion of metal and minerals which could be used to prop our depleted world up. However, the same corporations that harvested the Earth dry laid claim to all the most bountiful asteroids, forming a syndicate that continued to subjugate even the most powerful of the world's governments. That's where you come in. In one last great experiment in capitalism, you'll be claiming stake in the New Martian Colonies, the last place within humanity's reach that hasn't been claimed by the hand of the syndicates. Offworld Trading Company is being produced by Stardock, developed by Mohawk Games, and headed by Soren Johnson, Civilization IV's lead designer. It's a real-time strategy where there are no armies to move, units to build, or cities to conquer. Instead your fight is purely financial; sell high, buy low, and bankrupt the competition. It's still in Steam Early Access, but the main gameplay modes are already all there. There's a dynamic campaign in which you'll play through a series of scenarios to make your way to the top of the Martian economy. They've also integrated a fairly intuitive set of tutorials that help get you into the game quickly, as well as take you through the advanced mechanics if you need the extra help. Multiplayer is also fully integrated, although when I checked there weren't a ton of people playing the game yet. |
| Laura's Gaming Butts: A Link To The Ass Posted: 26 Feb 2015 05:55 AM PST Hello all and welcome to Laura's Gaming Butts, Destructoid's new weekly YouTube show about butts in videogames. Yep, it's a video podcast where I get guests in to talk about butts. Professional journalism at its finest. This week we're joined by Destructoid community member Daniel Fox, better known here as Preposterous Whitey. From Tingle's adorable Christmas ornament of a rear to Ganon's transforming posterior, we're here today to discuss the butts of the Zelda franchise. Now, sit back and enjoy some butts. |
| Bungie implements patch 1.1.1 in Destiny, mostly changes weapon balance Posted: 26 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST Bungie has unloaded patch 1.1.1 into the Destiny world, which has a number of weapon balance adjustments, in addition to a new reputation window, matchmaking for weekly Heroics, and a fix for the dreaded heavy ammo bug. A few other stealth changes have made it in, too. The most notable ones include a fix for the 4th Horseman shotgun (which is now actually usable), confirmation that the Song of Ir Yut does have the extended magazine not shown in the tooltip, a small (fair) nerf to the Shoot To Loot perk, the guaranteed addition of Exotic engrams to Xur's inventory, the removal of heavy ammo drops for player kills in PVP, and a system in place that avoids repeated maps for Crucible queues. Weapon balancing seems ok so far outside of the needless assault rifle nerf, which is counteracted by making nearly all shotguns and some pulse rifles viable. I'm glad hand cannons were adjusted, because everyone using the Fatebringer at all times in PVE got old fast. As a scout rifle player at heart, I haven't noticed anything major in terms of a strategic shift, but I am using more of my Exotic cache lately (outside of ARs), which is good. This rock-solid patch is setting up House of Wolves for success early on, so Bungie may have an easier time bringing ex-players back into the fold if the expansion is actually good. 1.1.1 [Bungie] |
| PlayStation deals: $359 PS4, free PS TV bundle, or 20% off PSN credit Posted: 26 Feb 2015 05:15 AM PST Lots of PlayStation 4-related deals on this fine Thursday afternoon morning, as Rakuten offers the console's "choose one game" bundle for only $359.99. It's even throwing in six months worth of PlayStation Plus access. Over at Best Buy, the retailer must be itching to get rid of the PlayStation TV inventory it has stocked up because it's now bundling the system in for free in a PlayStation 4 The Last of Us: Remastered bundle. For $399.99, you're getting a decent value from an authorized Sony retailer. (The PS TV is worth about $60 to $80.) Finally, another worthwhile PlayStation deal that's somehow still in stock comes from PayPal Digital: $50 worth of PlayStation Network credit for only $40. If you do the quick math, you're basically getting 20% off anything on PSN -- a fairly rare deal, all things considered. |
| Dark Souls developer's PS1 classic Shadow Tower rated by ESRB Posted: 26 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST From Software doesn't just make Demon's/Dark Souls and Bloodborne. The company created Armored Core, too. It also followed its King's Field games with another first-person, skeletal RPG, Shadow Tower. Shadow Tower has been rated by the ESRB for PSP, PS Vita, and PS3, as spotted by DualShockers, which could point to an impending PSN release, possibly ahead of Bloodborne. And, if not, Shadow Tower has been on the Japanese PlayStation Store since 2007. You can always break out that alternate account. Shadow Tower [ESRB via DualShockers] |
| At long last, Republique is out on PC via Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store Posted: 26 Feb 2015 04:45 AM PST Once upon a time it felt like Republique would never make it to PC after its successful Kickstarter campaign. Thankfully though developer Camoflaj has been open about the process, guiding us through the series of delays until this moment -- launch. You can now find Republique Remastered on sale at Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store, which includes the first three episodes on the Unity 5 engine. It's priced at $24.99 ($19.99 for the first week), and includes episodes four and five. You can also buy a deluxe edition of the game for $34.99 (also discounted down to $27.99 for one week), which comes with extras like the original soundtrack, a documentary, and a few prototypes. |
| Namco teases new Vita RPG Ray Gigant from Demon Gaze dev Posted: 26 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST Demon Gaze developer Experience has been busy on the Vita since with Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy (and its upcoming sequel in Japan), but there are no shortages of dungeons to crawl or publishers to team with, so Bandai Namco has begun teasing Experience-developed Ray Gigant. The name could be worse. It stars the special chosen boy who blows up all of Tokyo after killing a Gigant, the (alien) monsters that have suddenly begun appearing worldwide. After getting the whole wiping out entire cities thing in check, he goes on to fight Gigants along with the two other main characters, unloved British boy Kyle (not MacGregor) and a girl named Nil of unknown nationality who posts up in the Caribbean. 新作ダンジョンRPG『レイギガント』公式サイトがオープン!ティザーPVや各種情報が判明 ― T.M.Rさん、飛蘭さん、南條愛乃さんの3人が主題歌を担当! | Bard the Wandering Caretaker will soon join the cast of League of Legends Posted: 26 Feb 2015 04:15 AM PST Riot Games continues to truck on with League of Legends, which is still going strong years later. Its newest Champion to join up is Bard, described as "The Wandering Caretaker." He'll make use of chimes spread about the map, which he can activate to utilize certain buffs and boosts. Riot notes that Bard is billed as a "wandering support," much like Alistar was in the old days before his rework. Sounds like a unique style of play -- I'm in. | Nintendo Download: Donkey Kong Land and Country! Posted: 26 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST This is a huge day for the 3DS and Wii U in terms of the Virtual Console. Not only is the 3DS getting Donkey Kong Land 1-3, but the Wii U is also getting Donkey Kong Country 1-3, which were removed previously from the Wii. Happy day! If you buy one or more games on the above list, you'll get 30% off Tropical Freeze until March 3. Also on the Wii U is GravBlocks+. The 3DS isn't resting on its laurels though, as Ironfall: Invasion launches today, as does the Titan Attacks! port. You'll also find Luv Me Buddies Wonderland, Around the World in 80 Days, and themes for Donkey Kong and Monster Hunter 4. |

| Slain! is an homage to a particular kind of gothic, gory classic Posted: 26 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST We are not wanting for loving pixel art in this nostalgia-fueled retro renaissance, but Slain!'s Gothic horror manages to stand out the same way the sort of off kilter Altered Beast or Castlevania still do. Before "pixel art" became a bit of a catch-all aesthetic. Fight things. Fight bigger things. Do puzzles. Avoid traps. Die repeatedly, horribly, with lots of pixelated blood and viscera. Sounds good. Modest Kickstarter goal. Veteran (Naughty Dog, Rockstar) team. A year and a half of development finished with an estimated three months left, making for a May PC release. Sounds good. The team is considering a PS4/Vita version of Slain! too, if there's interest (Xbox One already confirmed), so please go yell loudly for that to happen after enjoying some fine, page-breaking gifs. | Bandai Namco is behind new space robot MOBA Supernova Posted: 26 Feb 2015 03:15 AM PST You can play Supernova today. The MOBA from developer Primal Game Studios is publisher Bandai Namco's next push into the realm of free-to-play (you'll remember the Gundam Vs-like 2-on-2 arena fighter Rise of Incarnates). Namco also sees entering the new hotly competitive genre as carrying on the competitive tradition of its fighting game heritage. Rather than spin-off an existing franchise into a MOBA -- there are quite a few of those -- the company let Budapest-based Primal create an original IP. In this case, a future setting where various commanders of human and alien are fighting for supremacy in the galaxy. What it boils down to, though, is a bunch Transformers-looking robots -- and a few sexy-lady-looking robots, for some reason -- pew-pewing the heck out of each other in space. |
| Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a quirky spinoff in line with series legacy Posted: 26 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Over the years, Atlus has become one of the more endearing presences in gaming. One thing fans appreciate is its tendency to switch things up. The publisher has a handle on the niche gaming scene, and it's reassuring to know that it recognizes when to branch out and try new things. With the upcoming spinoff for the Etrian Odyssey series featuring a partnership with Chunsoft, Atlus has got its eye on trying something a bit different with its favored dungeon crawler. Moving away from the first-person view from past titles, Etrian Mystery Dungeon blends the two series' specialties together to make a nice mix of hardcore RPG action with roguelike dungeon exploration. During a special hands-on session with Atlus, I got some time to experience what EMD has to offer. Though the perspective has changed, the spirit of the series remains. |
| Shovel Knight coming to PS4, Vita, PS3 on April 21 Posted: 26 Feb 2015 02:35 AM PST Shovel Knight will release on PS4, Vita, and PS3 on April 21, Yacht Club Games just announced. The retro-style platformer is a part of Sony's "Spring Fever 2015" promotion and will launch at a special introductory price for PlayStation Plus members, $13.49. After its first week on PSN, the "groundbreaking" title's asking price will jump back up to the standard $15. In contrast with previous releases of the game, the PlayStation versions will include a boss battle with Kratos, the antihero from Sony's popular God of War franchise. Yacht Club Games [Twitter] |
| Xenoblade Chronicles X shows off dynamic weather, day-night cycle Posted: 26 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST Day and night cycles aren't new, but it's a pretty one at least. Actually, thinking on it, more RPGs (particularly Japanese RPGs) could benefit from a day and night cycle just for the perceived visual variation on the hours and hours spent traversing and grinding. Xenoblade Chronicles X is continuing the trend with time of day affecting monster availability in the field. You'll be able to adjust time of day at rest stops by immediately sleeping some hours away. Planet Mira also has dynamic weather, from your typical clear sky, clouds, rain, and storms to even grander weather happenings like heat waves and sandstorms. These aren't just cosmetic -- they'll affect battle as well. Oh, and that dive, brief pause, and sudden surfacing with a bat out of hell swim stroke. Good stuff. 【XenobladeX】時間と天候 [Nintendo via Gematsu] |
| Microsoft cuts price of Xbox Live down to $40 Posted: 26 Feb 2015 02:02 AM PST [Update: it appears as if the promotion is temporary through Microsoft.com, as expected.] Microsoft is continuing its aggressive "let's undercut Sony" scheme, following up its Xbox One console price cuts. One year of Xbox Live Gold is now $40 on Microsoft's official site, which is often times the sale price at other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. We have reached out to Microsoft to see if this sale is permanent or temporary, as it was previously available for $60 a year. If the new price is here to stay it's cheaper than Sony's $50 PlayStation Plus, which also requires membership for online play. Though you could easily argue that Plus benefits severely outweigh Xbox Live Gold -- even if Games on Gold has been getting better every month. |
| Minor league wrestler accidentally outs WWE 2K16's existence Posted: 26 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST After taking a proverbial steel chair to the back with WWE 2K15, the wrestling series seems poised to make a return to the squared circle. That's not shocking in its own right, but what's interesting is that 2K Games didn't get a chance to control the announcement. Instead, a minor league wrestler took that into her own hands. Sasha Banks is a wrestler in NXT, the development league for WWE. On Twitter, a fan asked if she got "scanned" to be a playable character in WWE 2K16. Banks replied with a simple "Yes, I did," effectively outing the game's existence, likely months before the publisher would've preferred. For comparison's sake, WWE 2K15 was revealed in May. Fortunately for Banks, it's not the most egregious of errors. Everyone knew there'd be another installment in the franchise. She was maybe just a tad too eager to state her involvement. @SashaBanksWWE [Twitter -- Thanks, Sebastian!] |
| Sega shuts down Valkyria Chronicles mobile game Posted: 26 Feb 2015 01:45 AM PST Sega and NHN are terminating service for their card-based social game Valkyria Chronicles Duel. The lights began going out today, as the companies have already discontinued sales of the browser and mobile game's virtual currency. The final blow is scheduled to take place on April 22. Valkyria Duel, initially released in Japan on July 26, 2012, eschewed the franchise's distinctive strategy-based gameplay in favor of a more management-driven deck-building experience. The original Valkyria Chronicles is now available on PC and, as always, PlayStation 3. 【重要】『戦場のヴァルキュリアDUEL』サービス終了のお知らせ [Hangame via Hachima Kikou] |

| Fans cobble together playable demo for abandoned Sonic X-Treme Posted: 26 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST The titled epitome of '90s raditude done in by hubris, Sonic X-Treme, was meant to be the first full 3D Sonic -- a Mario 64 colleague -- and the first of SEGA's star series for its Saturn system. Like so many subsequent 3D Sonic games should have been, Sonic X-Treme was cancelled. The Saturn lacked its company mascot, and ultimately SEGA was done in on the hardware side. We've seen leaked footage of Sonic X-Treme before, but dedicated fans have actually put together a playable demo, which you can get here with a forum registration. As the thread notes, it's just one level -- with "more builds and levels to come later" -- that is "an almost as is port of the engine...how the original developers had left it." The fish-eye lens that characterized the canceled platformer will come in a later version. |
| Fable Legends will be free-to-play on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs Posted: 26 Feb 2015 12:28 AM PST Microsoft has just announced that Fable Legends will be free-to-play. Well, that's certainly an interesting way to go about it. It will launch on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and requires Xbox Live Gold for the former. This will be the most "accessible" Fable iteration yet, and the entire story can be played for free, with a rotation of heroes and villains to play as. I just hope that they don't go overboard with microtransactions, and that a "full" game can be purchased somehow. Seeing Microsoft embrace free-to-play more is a sign of the times. Initially it was resistant to it, only featuring a few games with the scheme, but with coaxing from developers like World of Tanks' Wargaming, Microsoft seems to be more receptive -- although, I'm sure the Gold requirement is still annoying for some. | Gold Mario amiibo confirmed as Walmart exclusive, launches next month Posted: 26 Feb 2015 12:09 AM PST Oh hey it's that Gold Mario amiibo! Nintendo has confirmed to Destructoid that it will indeed be a Walmart exclusive, and will be sold on March 20 at $12.99. It will be available at 3,000 stores, so it's likely going to be easier to get to for some of you out in more rural areas. How much stock will be on-hand is yet to be seen, but exclusives have ranged from "zero" to as much as "50," at each store so we'll see. As I've said in the past, this is an exclusive I can live with. If people want Mario, they can get two other versions of him by way of the standard amiibo that's available everywhere, or the Mario Party 10 package shipping next month. With Meta Knight on the other hand, the only way to get him is through Best Buy who is completely out of stock, and he unlocks an extra function in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse -- which you can't use if you can't buy him. So who is getting the silver amiibo? Amazon? |
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer tied to Tomb Raider film reboot Posted: 26 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST A potential movie reboot of Tomb Raider just came a bit closer to reality with scriptwriter Evan Daugherty being hired to pen the tale of young Lara Croft's first adventure -- not unlike the recent game reboot. Warner Bros. has signed on as well to distribute the film and co-finance/co-produce with MGM, Deadline reports. Daugherty's first feature film was Snow White and the Huntsman, which he managed to sell in 2010 bidding war for $3.2 million dollars, because, holy shit, I'm in the wrong industry. Give me any existing fable, I will adapt it for a meager single million. Daugherty spun that success into writing gigs on Killing Season, Divergent, and Michal Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For the latter, he won the Razzie for Worst Screenplay. Aside from this Tomb Raider reboot, he is working on the script for G.I. Joe 3. It's been over a decade since Angelina Jolie's turn as the tomb raider and, well, this one just might be worse. Warner Bros And Scribe Evan Daugherty Join MGM ‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot [Deadline] |
| Dragon Quest Heroes free DLC adds new character, costumes Posted: 25 Feb 2015 11:30 PM PST Dragon Quest Heroes is already out in Japan -- thankfully, it has also just recently been confirmed for a Western release -- and its first wave of DLC is on the way. And it's all going to be free. First up is the Arena Battle and Alena and Kiryl Sub-Story. Clearing the Arena will unlock Alena’s original costume from Dragon Quest IV while clearing the sub-story will unlock different colored costumes for both characters. The following week is the Demon Sworsdman Battle and Jessica and Yangus Sub-Story. Beat him and Psaro becomes playable, plus there are Jessica and Yangus costume alternates to be had. There are three more non-detailed DLC named: Gods of Destruction and Slaughter Battle + Terry Sub-Story, Greatest Demon Beast Battle + Bianca & Nera Sub-Story, and Great Demon Lord Battle + Maya Sub-Story. It's not bad for free, weekly updates. I'm hoping and assuming we'll get it all free, too. Maybe it will just end up bundled in the Western release? | Masquerada is a very pretty Baldur's Gate-style RPG Posted: 25 Feb 2015 09:30 PM PST Leading with the Dragon Age comparison probably would've gotten more eyes on this these days, huh? The Baldur's Gate reference point just makes the most sense, though, especially with the isometric view. And there are plenty of fans left. I mean, Pillars of Eternity is happening. But onto Masquerada: Songs and Shadows. I'd hack the title at the colon, but otherwise I'm loving this "Venetian-inspired fantasy" world drawn with the colors of "French comic books and vivid games like Bastion." It's a less muted Banner Saga and more my style when it comes to "fantasy." In the city of Ombre, masks are key to casting magic. You'll play as Inspettore Cicero Gavar in his return from exile to solve a kidnapping. We're far out, as Masquerada is planning an early 2016 PC, Mac, and "consoles" release, but you can try the demo at PAX East if you're attending. |
| Wii U game Stone Shire is clearly not a Minecraft clone Posted: 25 Feb 2015 07:30 PM PST Due to be released on the Wii U eShop some time in March, Stone Shire is a "Minecraft-like experience" from Finger Gun Games. In Stone Shire, which is very much its own game inspired by Minecraft and not a direct clone, players can punch wood, dirt and stone blocks to collect resources, crafting them into tools which allow the player to more effectively collect resources. Following this, you can use collected resources to build structures in a large, blocky open world. Well, if you want to play Minecraft on Wii U, this is as close as you're going to get for a while. |
| New game from Darksiders creator will be announced later today Posted: 25 Feb 2015 07:00 PM PST Darksiders is continuing at Nordic (with a current generation port, first). Meanwhile, Darksiders creator Joe Madureira has a new studio, Airship Syndicate, staffed with some former Vigil employees. An email with the above image went out from Airship Syndicate, indicating that the team's new project is a Battle Chasers game. Over the course of four years, starting in 1998, Madureira wrote nine issues of the Battle Chasers comic. It ended on a cliffhanger as the tenth issue was never completed after Madureira left comics to join the videogame industry. The official announcement is coming six hours from time of writing. | Chainsaw-carved Majora's Mask is authentic as it gets Posted: 25 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST Now that's a one of a kind collector's item. Forget the gaudy gold New 3DS XL. Artist Griffon Ramsey works with the most delicate brush of all, the chained saw, and with it she sculpted this beautiful Majora's Mask out of a hunk of wood. It isn't the first time Ramsey's done videogame-based projects. You can check out this mounted Diablo III head, which she takes a damned flamethrower to. Well, a torch, anyway. But a fiery sort, not British for flashlight. |
