Liege is like chess, but with more face-stabbery Posted: 25 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST Coda Games' sole developer John Rhee just uploaded a revealing new pre-expo teaser for his Kickstarter-funded SRPG trilogy, Liege. In it, we get to see the most recent gameplay footage of the elegant, turn-based/tactical combat mechanics he's been perfecting. When describing the combat in Liege, Rhee highlights that it's "both tactical and turn-based," and that battles will "emerge seamlessly as you wander through the realm." So, gone are jarring battle transitions that we've grown accustomed to in JRPGs. In Liege, your heroes will simply draw their weapons on the field where they’re standing, and the fighting will commence. From what I saw in the new teaser, the transitions do look smooth. When characters entering combat approached one another, the field transitioned to a familiar tactical grid showing where each warrior could position themselves according to how many moves they had left to spend. From there, characters could chain attacks, moving from one target to the next, brutally dispatching foes. Seeing that played out from tactics to execution looked incredibly satisfying. Liege is planned to release as a trilogy with a continuous story arc. Platforms listed on the title's Indie Megabooth page are PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Wii U. Part One of the trilogy is scheduled to release sometime in 2015.
March's Games with Gold are some of the best games Posted: 25 Feb 2015 12:30 PM PST In the recent past, Xbox Live's Games with Gold program has had mostly the same cadence every month: a standout title, an indie game, and a bit of filler. March breaks that mold with three superb games from 2013. March's Xbox One title is Rayman Legends, which just happened to be my game of the year in 2013. Seriously, it's amazing. When informed of the selection, Destructoid editor Jordan Devore couldn't control his outbursts, exclaiming "So dang good!" and "Those games are masterful." Legacy console Xbox 360's titles aren't slouches either. Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider kicks off the first half of March, and BioShock Infinite holds down the back-end. All three games here are certainly worth downloading and playing. And, as an added bonus, Microsoft has announced that April will double down on Games with Gold. That means two games on Xbox One, and four on Xbox 360. Microsoft claims that this is to celebrate the program crossing 100 million game downloads across its lifetime. Whatever the reasoning, Xbox Live subscribers will certainly welcome the freebies. Make Room for Three Amazing Games in March – and Double Games with Gold in April [Xbox Wire]
Cuuute: A weapon shop game about potatoes Posted: 25 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Games about managing weapon shops are still novel enough conceptually and satisfying enough mechanically that they don't need much window dressing to draw me in. Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! has a cutesy art style and offbeat premise going for it. That's plenty. I'm am down. This title is in development at Singapore-based Daylight Studios with a summer 2015 release for Windows and Mac in mind, assuming it gets through Steam Greenlight. (It surely will.) Smelly ants are crawling all over my desk and, ugh, now me, so let me leave you with two parting tidbits: composer Masahiko Kimura (Castlevania series, Genso Suikoden) is on board, and Holy Potatoes has a potato dog, aka the second-best dog-related thing I saw today.
Game jam dealing with the struggles of being trans Posted: 25 Feb 2015 11:45 AM PST A month-long game jam, JamForLeelah, recently concluded and the 22 participating games are available now. Leelah Alcorn was a transgender teen who had a passion for videogames and an interest in game design. Leelah took her life at the end of last year. JamForLeelah spreads awareness for LGBTIQ issues and supports various transgender-based charities. Most of the games deal with gender, coming out and what it is like to be transgender; things many of us may never have to think about. The also jam includes a visual novel made by Destructoid's very own Laura Kate Dale. The games and more information are available on the jam's official site. #JamForLeelah [itch.io]
Kill cops (or robbers) early with EA Access and Battlefield Hardline Posted: 25 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST If you were planning on getting or trying out Battlefield Hardline and happen to have an Xbox One and EA Access, then your monthly payments are about to pay off. Well, kind of. EA announced that EA Access members will be able to play a full trial of the game on March 12. Users can experience all content 10 hours before the game is technically released to everyone else. See, money really can buy happiness.
I want more Warhammer 40K games, but not like this Posted: 25 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST It would be laughable how many Warhammer 40,000 videogame adaptations are in active development if it weren't so sad. Still no Space Marine sequel. But there is this, a multiplayer online battle arena game called Dark Nexus Arena. Discretion, Games Workshop -- show some! There's a $250 Flesh-Sculptor Pack available that comes with limited-edition character skins and early founder access to the game. It's just hard to look at this stuff and not grimace. Instead of going after that MOBA market, I would have loved to see a follow-up to The Last Stand, which debuted in Dawn of War II before going standalone. It was this stellar wave-based fight for survival that demanded proficiency with your character and their gear, and absolute teamwork. But, I get it. Money matters.
Flame Over fires up the Vita this March Posted: 25 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST The Vita means life. And what a life it's having. Even though its overall sales pale in comparison to the likes of the 3DS, the system is an indie lovers dream and is home to some of the most underrated games in the past few years. Flame Over looks to continue that Vita trend with its launch on March 10 (March 11 for Europeans). In honor of today's news, the developers have released a Let's Play video by game designer Alasdair Evans (as seen above). Not only does the video show off some gameplay, but Evans also mentions that the team is working on a PS4 version of the game -- he says it's "coming as soon as humanly possible." From the looks of it, it's got all the elements you'd want in a quality Vita title. It's roguelike, it's top down, has randomly generated levels, and it's got fire -- lots and lots of fire. The game also has a persistent upgrade system to counter all those nasty perma-deaths.
Scientists: Don't jump off buildings into haystacks like an assassin Posted: 25 Feb 2015 10:15 AM PST Everybody knows that people who play videogames are impressionable. After playing Pac-Man, we invariably binge eat. After a session with Call of Duty, we all joined the military. But science says that maybe we shouldn't do everything we see in a videogame. It turns out that jumping off buildings and landing in haystacks a la Assassin's Creed can be quite dangerous. In an article published in the student-run Journal of Physics Special Topics from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester, the authors found that a 1.5 meter haystack can safely cushion a fall from about 12 meters. It does note in the paper that a fall from up to 50 meters can be survived "if the jumper is willing to suffer severe injuries" in the process. 'Assassin's Creed' may give gamers a gripping sense of vertigo, but its leaping calculations are optimistic at best [University of Leicester]
Sea of Solitude looks like a Venetian monster-fest Posted: 25 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST Sea of Solitude -- I'd take Solitude Sea -- is currently in the prototyping phase, so who knows what'll come of it. Still, when Jordan showed me the gifs on its site, it seemed worth sharing. Similar to Enslaved, it shows an alternate, colorful, empty (but monster-filled) post-apocalyptia. Plus, the main character has been turned into a monster, too. Yeah, the loneliness metaphor and all that's a bit on the nose, but I always appreciate a pretty game gif. Find a few more here.
Woah Dave! Deluxe! out now, also coming to Wii U Posted: 25 Feb 2015 09:45 AM PST Woah Dave! Deluxe! is out now on Steam, Choice Provisions just announced. This is a free update (it's not often we get to say that these days) to the original game, featuring a myriad of enhancements, including two new levels, boss battles, new enemies, rideable UFOs, and a bushel new characters -- like CommandgirlVideo from the Bit.Trip series. Creator Jason Cirillo says Deluxe! is coming "soon" to every platform (3DS, PC, iOS, and Vita), plus PlayStation 4 and Wii U. Yes, the developer confirmed a Wii U version is also in the works. If you'd like to know more about this arcade-y platformer, you can read our full review here. Woah Dave! [Steam, Choice Provisions, Jason Cirillo]
ToeJam & Earl bring the funk to Kickstarter Posted: 25 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST The funkotronic duo are back in ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, and this time the developers are turning to Kickstarter to make sure the game gets made without publisher interference. Greg Johnson, one of the two creators of the franchise, has pitched the game as a ToeJam & Earl experience similar to the original game. While being old school at its core, it looks like there are going to be some welcome additions to the formula such as four-player cooperative, upgrades that carry between games, and hats that affect stats. ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove hopes to get $400,000 to release on PC and potentially other unspecified platforms. ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove [Kickstarter]
Posted: 25 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST LittleBigPlanet Vita developer Tarsier's new project, Hunger, is looking impressive. And spooky. It's that good kind of "everything is off kilter and uncanny" beat of constant unnerving versus any sort of aggressive scare. The wonky camera works help, and that discordant piano the Hannibal TV show has used so well. Hunger is all about guiding a young girl out of The Maw, an underwater nightmarescape -- hence all the bobbing -- where, presumably, she will be eaten.
Kill your friends when Friendship Club hits Early Access on March 24 Posted: 25 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST Friendship Club is aiming to be the premier bullet hell party game for Steam, though I don't think it has much competition. Taking place in a child's imagination, friends shoot at each other with infinitely bouncing bullets until only one remains. The cast of characters include an old prospector with a lust for gold and a duck from the Vatican. What looks to be a bullet hell of a good time, Friendship Club will be arriving on Steam Early Access on March 24 for $11.99.
Hybrid platformer/shoot-'em-up Velocity 2X headed to Steam and Xbox One Posted: 25 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST We didn't review Velocity 2X for PlayStation 4 or PS Vita, but Hamza did talk about how this half vertical spaceship shooter, half side-scrolling platformer was going to "melt [our] eyeballs." Hah, that Destructoid dot com -- always talking about how videogames will melt people's body parts. Velocity 2X does seem cool, though. With help from Sierra, developer FuturLab is going beyond PlayStation Network with new versions of the game for Xbox One, Windows, Mac, and Linux. When they arrive this summer, these ports will pack daily challenge stages as well as all of the bonus stages from the Critical Urgency and Dual Core DLC packs. The studio said its relationship with the publisher "doesn't end with Velocity 2X," and then it used a winky face. ( ゚o゚) Also, this: "FuturLab still loves PlayStation and its loyal players, and we'll continue to work closely with Sony to make sure the fan base we’ve worked hard to build is well served."
Eldritch developer's new game Neon Struct is out May 20 Posted: 25 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST I didn't think that Eldritch had been out for that long, but it turns out that it has been available for more than a year. So what has developer Minor Key Games been doing in the time since its release? It has been working on the "political thriller stealth game" Neon Struct. It has a lo-fi film grain look to it, neon flashbangs, and what appears to be the love child of Mr. Destructoid and a Star Wars AT-ST. That robot can never keep it in his metal pants. Neon Struct is set to release on Linux, Mac, and Windows on May 20.
Rocksmith will turn you into a guitar legend like Hendrix or the guy from Papa Roach Posted: 25 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Rocksmith 2014's getting some DLC songs by Papa Roach today. One time in eighth grade, a kid in my class started a speech by saying "Cut my life into pieces, this is my bat report. Echolocation, no seeing. Vampire bat bite your arm, now you're bleeding." I wonder what he's up to. Probably not playing Papa Roach songs on Rocksmith, if I'm being really honest.
| There's already a workaround to skirt Pokémon Shuffle's microtransactions Posted: 25 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST Pokémon Shuffle isn't Nintendo's initial foray into the seedy underworld of free-to-play with microtransactions. Rusty's Real Deal Baseball did it first, but Shuffle is the first example that drew ire from Nintendo's faithful fans. But, as they are wont to do, those outraged by Pokémon Shuffle's structure found a way to bypass all paid-for elements of the game. By taking advantage of the same exploit that made Game Boy Color ROMs playable, users have effectively reduced the cost of all in-game items to gratis -- a nifty little trick that grants unlimited hearts and gems without a wait to keep playing. The hack works by placing new code into the memory of a game via the 3DS browser. Because it uses an updated browser, the New 3DS safeguards against this sort of loophole; it had to be done on a system using firmware between versions 9.0 and 9.5. While it was just recently discovered, it seems as if the exploit has possibly already been patched up by Nintendo. Some users have replicated it, while others that chimed in later had no such luck. However, those that got in right away can hunt Pokémon to their hearts' content without pesky waits to sully the good times. | Majora's Mask bumped by God Eater from atop Japanese sales charts Posted: 25 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST It wasn't a long reign -- just one week, in fact -- but it was a good one. Majora's Mask 3D has to settle for second place on the Japanese sales charts. God Eater 2: Rage Burst is the new ruler. In its second week on the market, Majora's Mask 3D moved an additional 72,181 units, bringing its lifetime total to just more than 300,000. God Eater 2: Rage Burst on Vita weighed in just shy of a quarter million at 234,180. God Eater's success didn't come out of left field, though. The series is basically Namco's equivalent of Monster Hunter -- both games in a genre that sell particularly well in Japan. The PS4 adaption of God Eater 2: Rage Burst chipped in an extra 37,824 sales. But, as is expected in Japan, the handheld version was far more popular. 「GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST」合計27万2000本。「DEAD OR ALIVE 5 Last Round」「The Order:1886」も登場の「週間販売ランキング+」 [4Gamer] |
Hahah what: Don't Be Patchman is a 'sneak-and-grow' game Posted: 25 Feb 2015 07:15 AM PST As I watched the first video of Don't Be Patchman (below), I thought I had an okay feel for what it is. Plant apples, get an apple tree, shake it for more apples. Got it. I'm no Animal Crossing slouch. Next video, ladybugs are following Patchman as he plants flowers, drinks their nectar, and spits it up all over a house. Sure. Third video, a commentary on consumerism and commercialism. Fourth video, dodging deadly floating drones in an office building and a rock quarry. What is this game? The Kickstarter video above does a better job bringing all of the elements together, but it still looks like a weird experience. Don't Be Patchman is seeking approval on Steam Greenlight, and is on Kickstarter with a base funding goal of $25,000.
Last Round is the third Dead or Alive 5 release, but it has some bugs Posted: 25 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Koei Tecmo has been riding Dead or Alive 5 since 2012. If you count the PlayStation Vita-enhanced Dead or Alive 5 Plus, the recent Dead or Alive 5 Last Round release marks the fourth iteration. It has a couple new characters and stages, a higher resolution on current generation consoles, and plenty of skimpy costumes. It also has some bugs, particularly on Xbox One, which sees a lot of crashes while looking for a game online and arcade stick functionality issues. The PlayStation versions have more specific issues. On PS3, you can't tag team Hayate and Phase 4, while on PS4, pausing a replay when it shows a Power Blow can crash the game. The team has a list of known issues here and ways to try and circumvent some of them.
Tormentum looks like a sword-f***ingly weird time Posted: 25 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST I've seen a lot of weird shit, but Poland-based OhNoo Studio's macabre point-and-click adventure Tormentum ranks up there with some of the most horrifyingly surreal stuff I've had the pleasure of being exposed to on the PC. In just over a minute and a half of trailer footage, I'm pretty sure that I witnessed a corpse being rhythmically "penetrated" by some sort of medieval torture-porn machine made up of grimy swords; a gargantuan, sightless hell-worm rising from the abyss; and what looked like a light-beam puzzle that forms a glowing pentagram when solved. Color me intrigued. According to the OhNoo, Tormentum takes place in "a dark hopeless world" populated by "grim characters and hideous creatures." You'll play the role of a nameless protagonist who awakens in a metal cage suspended below what looks like some sort of demonic dirigible. The only thing the character can recall is a faint image of a statue of a woman surrounded by a "forest of stone hands." The hero, on a quest to discover the truth about himself, will travel through three separate lands, which the studio reckons will be comprised of around 80 locations. Destructoid's Alasdair Duncan is quoted during the trailer as saying he felt the game was like "H. R. Giger and all of the covers of your favorite metal albums had some freakish baby." I'd say that's a damned accurate description. However, I can see hints of Salvador Dali in it, myself. Well, more accurately: Salvador Dali after pulling an all-nighter with a gutful of Jimson weed. The game releases on March 4, but if you're eager to get a taste of this point-and-click weirdness before then, you can pick up the demo they've made available on Steam right now.
Forza Horizon 2 gets free, standalone Fast & Furious expansion Posted: 25 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Get ready to live your life a quarter mile at a time. An Xbox and Universal partnership has borne Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious, a standalone expansion. Not only do you not need to own the base game to play, but the expansion will be completely free from March 27 through April 10. It will cost $10 after that, but if you've downloaded it to your Xbox One or 360 during the free period, you still have it free of charge. Also Ludacris is in it. I'll take a free sampling of Horizon with Ludacris, sure.
Kitana has a 'Mournful' Jade-based variation in Mortal Kombat X Posted: 25 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST All of Mortal Kombat X's fighters have three variations that allow for slightly different play styles. A few weeks back, NetherRealm confirmed Jade would not be making it into Mortal Kombat X, but her spirit lives on with Kitana's "Mournful" variant. It gives her Jade's staff and slicey boomerang. Kitana continues fan fighting with her more traditional Royal Storm and Assassin variations, though the former leans more towards defense and zoning while the latter gets in close for damage. We've got more from our recent Mortal Kombat X preview here. Also I initially typo'd that as "Kokbat" and, man, that should be a game or a parody video or something, somehow.
Get possessive over Gotham in this Batman: Arkham Knight trailer Posted: 25 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST The upcoming, M-rated end to Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy has a lovely new trailer out today. And this one isn't polished, artsy CG the series is known for. Some well cut in-game footage, a view of the rogues gallery teaming up to take Bats down, and some Nolan-esque flaming logos. I continue to love how colorful this series is despite the grimdark. There's some Sleeping Dogs level neon reflecting all over the place and I dig it. Goes well with the comic roots, too. I also hope the Batmobile controls as slick as it looks. There's got to be good reason to use it versus just flapping about above the roadways.
The Evil Within Assignment DLC gets real trailer, release date Posted: 25 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST All that matters is finding Leslie, but it is still nice to see an actual trailer for The Evil Within's first DLC, The Assignment, after last week's ten seconds of nothing teaser. There is a release date, too. March 10. The two-part story focuses on detective Juli Kidman, Sebastian Castellanos’ partner, and runs concurrent to The Evil Within. It will be finished with the second DLC, The Consequence, which comes out later this spring. So $20 for the whole story ($10 each), or pay $20 for the game's "season pass," which includes a third DLC episode, The Executioner. So like Resident Evil 4's Assignment Ada and Separate Ways, but you have to pay another $20. Ain't the future grand.
| There's a new BlazBlue rhythm game and it's out now Posted: 25 Feb 2015 04:15 AM PST "This isn't the BlazBlue game you're looking for," he persuades you with a small wave of the hand. Okay, maybe it is. Maybe you're in the market for a "gluttonous" rhythm game where you "eat to the beat of BlazBlue." In that case, step right up. Let me introduce you to Arc System Works' new free-to-play mobile game, Eat Beat: Dead Spike-san. Here's the premise:
It's out now for Android and iOS platforms in both English and Japanese. The base game features eight tracks at launch with more songs, characters, and items coming later down the line as DLC. Eat Beat: Dead Spike-san [Google Play, iTunes] |
| Answer Hotline Miami 2's call on March 10, 2015 Posted: 25 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST No maybe about it: Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number will release on March 10, just as the cryptic phone message seemed to indicate. The ferocious overhead action game is headed to Steam and GOG.com (Windows, Mac, Linux), and PlayStation Network (PS3, PS4, and PS Vita) for $14.99. Excuse me while I listen to these tracks again in silence. But first, some housekeeping: there's a Digital Special Edition of the game that comes with a six-track remix EP featuring M|O|O|N, Scattle, and Carpenter Brut, as well as some Hotline weapons and masks for Payday 2. Okay, I'm leaving now. No more HM2 talk. I mean it. See you March 10. |
Exclusive: Dot Arcade is a new Full Color Videogame for Wii U Posted: 25 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST Two of James Montagna's most well known games are Adventure Time: Hey Ice King Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!! and Wonder Momo. These games sold because of their characters. Wonder Momo had built up a strong following through her comic strip on Shifty Look, and Adventure Time was a worldwide merchandising phenomenon by the time it first hit the market. I'd imagine designing a game that features beloved characters must be a double-edged sword. Expectations are higher, but so are potential for sales. The pressure is on to design something that does justice to the source material, but on the other end, its the source material that will inevitably be the star of the show, not the design decisions. Maybe that's why James has designed his first "solo project" on videogame consoles to be something almost completely abstract. The only literal depictions of in-game characters coming form virtual "marquee art" that appears on the side of the screen. All the action takes place between on a field of simple flashing lights. That's just one of the ways Dot Arcade hearkens back to a day long before Montagna was even born, when electronic games were more analog than digital, where actual light bulbs worked as individual "pixels" and the language of videogames as we know it was still largely unwritten. It's a little hard to believe Dot Arcade is real, but according to James, "The game is actually finished. It's ESRB rated, and completely Nintendo Lot Check approved -- I just have to decide the release date and let Nintendo know when to pull the trigger."
You can now eat Xbox One burgers in Hong Kong Posted: 25 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST Everyone has their morning rituals. Some people need their coffee. Others jog. I peruse Japanese website Gigazine hoping to see pictures of bizarre and wonderful foods. It's rarely videogame related, so I haven't shared this rite until now, when I awoke to photos of an Xbox burger joint. It seems someone at Microsoft believes in the old proverb "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach," as the company is running an Xbox One promotion at fast food restaurant Triple-O's in Hong Kong. In addition to dressing up burgers in green wrappers, an entire location in the city's Wan Chai district will be decked out in Xbox One regalia through the end of March. Anything to get a foothold in an emerging market, I guess... Xbox HK [Facebook via Gigazine]
Surprise! OlliOlli 2 is coming out next week on PS4 and Vita Posted: 25 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST The original OlliOlli managed to charm a large number of the Dtoid staff, and a lot of us were looking forward to the sequel -- we just didn't think it would come this soon. According to the developer, OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood will debut next week, March 3, on the PS4 and Vita. You'll be able to experience new ramps, levels, and an expanded combo system that involves manuals and reverts. Sounds pretty sweet -- I wonder if it will come to PS+ eventually.
Dragon Quest Heroes is coming westward on PS4 Posted: 25 Feb 2015 01:14 AM PST Whenever I type up a localization announcement, I usually have a smile on my face. It's great to see more exposure for eastern games, especially one as enticing as Dragon Quest Heroes. Square Enix has just announced it's bringing the title over to the west by way of the PS4 later this year. I'm particularly excited because of the Hyrule Warriors-esque support strategy, with free villain characters arriving after the Japanese launch -- we'll likely see most of that content as well.
| If I didn't know better, I'd think these custom amiibo were Nintendo authentic Posted: 25 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST I think it's fair to say that amiibo are quite a tour de force in certain communities. In fact, some might even point a finger at this very website and accuse us of being mildly caught up in the craze. But, a talented few are going far above and beyond, and using the figurines as a platform to create something legitimately cool. Reddit user heyrich put together a collection of some of the best custom amiibo, complete with unique graphics to give them an authentic "new, in-box" look. Just take a gander at the likes of Cranky Kong or Ganondorf in his Wind Waker style. Oh! There's the whole Sonic Boom cast looking better than ever (not a tall order, honestly). Of course, this wasn't necessarily all done for the love of the game, so to speak. All of these custom amiibo are available on eBay, and they're going for a pretty penny. For instance, the lot of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy is going for a cool $300. Make sure to hold onto some Mega Stones if you want to up-size your wallet to pick up Charizard's evolutions. | Frictional says 'sorry for the silence' with a SOMA screenshot Posted: 24 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST I'm with Steven -- the ocean, pretty as it is, can also be petrifying. What just brushed against me? The studio behind Penumbra and Amnesia: The Dark Descent is plunging into the depths with SOMA, its next horror title, and this is gonna be real bad, you guys. I mean good. But also bad. The sci-fi title is set on a remote underwater research facility in which machines have begun "taking on human traits and alien constructions have started to interfere with routine." That's not new info -- just a refresher, as it's been a while since we or Frictional have talked about SOMA -- but it's still coming to PlayStation 4 and PC this year. The team says it's "closing in on Beta and everyone's working hard to get there. Once that's done, we'll reveal more!" For now, a new screenshot. Would have been amazing if the image was actually a gif in disguise with subtle, creepy-as-hell movement. Not too late to pull that stunt. I'd forget and fall for it. |
| Homeworld Remastered's new vid is a modern trailer for a modern launch Posted: 24 Feb 2015 09:00 PM PST My Steam clock tells me that Homeworld Remastered Collection unlocks in less than nine hours, but that just means there's just enough time left to put up this here launch trailer, which is brimming with all the bombast of a Sony or Microsoft E3 sizzle reel, complete with catchy contemporary dance music, beat-synchronized jump cuts, and big text popups. Already the comments are brimming with complaints about Gearbox not respecting Homeworld's "epic feel" and similar nonsense, but hey, the game's practically out already, so folks who want it will get all of Paul Ruskay's awesome soundtrack in a matter of hours. Besides, you can always just turn down the trailer volume and double up on some Chopin as an alternative. I've found "Raindrop Prelude" works quite well, and even matches the beats. | Platinum reveals meaning of Metal Gear Rising '2' logo Posted: 24 Feb 2015 07:30 PM PST Back in late January an image appeared for a split second during a Sony sizzle reel as part of a Twitch broadcast from Taipei Game Show. The image, a huge number two in what looked like the Metal Gear Rising: Revengence typeface, had a lot of fans predicting a sequel was on the way. Unfortunately, according to Platinum Games, the real explanation isn't as exciting. Apparently the tease was celebrating the two-year anniversary of the title's release. Obviously this doesn't mean that a sequel isn't coming, but this is now the official word on that big metallic "2." Platinum Games [Twitter] |
Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late discounted to just $24 Posted: 24 Feb 2015 04:00 PM PST Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late just launched in North America and it's already being offered at a deep discount via the PlayStation Store. Plus members can grab the PS3 fighter for a measly $23.79, while those without a subscription still have a deal on their hands at $33.99. In my review, I extolled UNIEL as an "intelligent, tactical fighting game" occupying a niche between "breakneck air-dashers and slower, more grounded titles like Street Fighter." It's notable for its GRD mechanic, which adds a clever tug-of-war-like quality to fights and encourages heady play. If you're a fighting game fan, you owe it to yourself to check this out -- especially at that price. Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late [PlayStation Store]
