Cool Mario Kart 8 soundtrack, Club Nintendo Japan

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST

Club Nintendo Japan has added some new rewards including a two-disc CD soundtrack for Mario Kart 8, a Majora's Mask jigsaw puzzle, and a lil Blooper shirt. You can squeeze into it, if you want.

There's also a tentative listing for another two-disc set featuring Nintendo ending / credits songs.

Even if you aren't in Japan, make sure to get on your region's Club Nintendo site before the closure. I wanted Kid Icarus: Uprising (dang game has held its value well over the years) but could only afford Super Metroid for the Wii U. It's not even like I needed it, either. I was just on a kick.

NBA Live 15 added to EA Vault

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST

Times have never been so low for those of us who love basketball and the games the sport inspires. While the NBA2K series may appear to be good enough for the majority, there is a growing minority that has become fed up with the way the series has been dragged down by microtransactions and inconsistencies.

Believe it or not, the House That Madden Built has been seen by some in the community as being the savior of our desperate prayers. Unfortunately, EA's NBA Live series has been complete shit. However, NBA Live 15 appears to show that this dog may have some legs (at least in the future).

If you happen to be an Xbox One owner and EA Access subscriber, then now is your chance to check out the other side of basketball gaming as NBA Live 15 is now part of The Vault. Go download and play, you lucky Xbox One plebes.

Tried to play Frozen Cortex, went Super Saiyan instead

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST

A little backstory: this video of Frozen Cortex is unedited, and shows off a glitch I encountered while playing a custom game online. After changing a handful of rules, we were left with what you see above, characters trying infinitely to pick up the ball. It seemed like it was missing a little something, so I added some Dragon Ball Z audio and voilà! A masterpiece.

Frozen Cortex has been out for a few days now, and it's great!

Fan-made Mother 4 still on track, finally gets a gameplay trailer

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST

EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi has already confirmed multiple times that he's not interested in working on any more games in the Mother series, but he wouldn't mind playing Mother 4 if it was made by somebody else.

Enter the EarthBound fans. The fine folks over at Starmen.net have been hard at work trying to make Mother 4 a reality. The project has been in development for five years now, and the effort and dedication really shows. Today, the team finally released a gameplay trailer, and it's looking absolutely fantastic. If I didn't know any better, I'd think it was an official sequel.

The trailer shows us a bunch of completely random things you can expect to do in the game, like ride around town on a motorcycle, talk to stray dogs, beat up melting robots, and more. I actually laughed out loud at several points during the video (that hermit can!), so that's definitely a good sign. It looks like they adopted the rhythm-based combat of Mother 3, which I'm very much a fan of, and added some new combat tactics as well. I cannot wait to play this!

We can expect to see Mother 4 this summer on PC, Mac, and Linux. It will even be available for free, so there's no reason not to check it out!

I badly want to pop this wall of Dragon Quest slimes

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

There's a bubble-wrap wall of slimes in this wild world of ours. Can you guess where?

Japan. Of course it's in Japan! The poppable piece of marketing is at the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line Shinjuku Station Metro Promenade. Lot of slime casualties, according to this tracker.

For those wondering what the heck is happening here because you've never played Dragon Quest or its spinoffs and you've stayed away from areas of the Internet where these adorable critters are spoken about, Ashley Davis' classic Flora and Fauna series has you covered.

Good on you, Tiny Cartridge, for bringing this and all manner of slime news to my attention.

Kane & Lynch join the Square Enix Humble Bundle 2

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST

With just under a week left to go before it vanishes, the Square Enix Humble Bundle 2 has added bonus titles: Startopia, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and the Kane & Lynch Collection.

If you already locked in your purchase for the pay-more-than-the-average tier, you're good to go. Otherwise, it has climbed to $7.57 since we last covered this bundle, so that's the price to beat.

I had forgotten how gross the Kane & Lynch series is. Funny image, though.

Crystal Dynamics: Tomb Raider partnership with Microsoft began in 2008

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST

At gamescom 2014, Rise of the Tomb Raider caused waves when it was revealed to be an Xbox exclusive. Well, sort of an exclusive. More like a timed exclusive. But, regardless of the confusion surrounding the announcement, the groundwork for the deal go back farther than anyone would likely imagine.

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Crystal Dynamics' Darrell Gallagher explains that the studio's partnership began more than half a decade ago. "It's been a long partnership ... since 2008 when we started working with Xbox on Underworld with some exclusive DLC," he said.

Gallagher went on to list more examples of the blossoming union, such as Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light being part of Xbox's Summer of Arcade program.  He called Rise of the Tomb Raider a "natural evolution" of that relationship.

Even if the bond with Xbox is strong, Gallagher doesn't think that the partnership is vital to the new Tomb Raider. "I wouldn't say that," he commented regarding the game existing without Microsoft's involvement. "If you look at Tomb Raider, it's been around for 20 years. So, I do think it would still be around." Gallagher also confirmed that 2013's Tomb Raider sold 7.5 million copies, a statistic that supports his claim that the series is fine on its own.

Finally, when pressed about the likely event of coming to unannounced platforms, Gallagher was predictably quiet, yet left the door of possibility wide open. "We're focusing on Xbox One and Xbox 360 here at Crystal, and that's what we're focused on right now. And anything beyond? We'll come back to at a later date."

Xeodrifter is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and Vita this spring, Renegade Kid announced today.

The minimalist "Metroidvania" launched on 3DS and PC late last year, earning high marks from our own Jonathan Holmes, who said it might be the Mutant Mudds developer's "best game yet."

The studio also just put out a special edition on Steam, which features a dev diary and soundtrack.

Team Fortress 2sdays: Stuff and Things

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST

So today I’ll keep this fairly short. It turns out that I actually couldn’t just flip a switch to turn back on Vs Saxton Hale mode on the server, seeing as I need to update it. Eventually it will be done, alongside adding in some new maps. That brings up the question, what maps do you want to see on the server? Is there anything you hate with a passion and wish would go away? Is there anything you want to see more of?

In other news Between 2Fort will be making a return sometime in March, I’m nailing down specific dates now, but it will return. Also don’t forget that we are still looking for people to help with the PC FNF cblogs. It’s a super easy thing and you won’t be alone, I sometimes might not forget to help every other week. If you’re interested hit up Mike or Swishiee for the details.

 So what is TF2sday?

Every Tuesday, a ton of folks from all across Destructoid hop on to the community server to play, talk, and shoot each other. It's usually a pretty crazy good time, and almost always involves various melee only matches between a handful of classes. So feel free to jump on and join us sometime!

New to TF2sday?

Don't worry, you're not alone! Any and all Dtoiders are welcome, so please don't be shy. If there is ever something wrong, or if you need to contact one of the server admins, please see below, all admin names and links to their Steam profile is listed.

We asked the least cynical man alive about Kanye's new videogame

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST

Kanye West is working on a videogame. Weirder still, this is not Mr. West's first foray into the world of gaming. He is also a playable character in a game called I Won about throwing gold chains at women and turning them into trophies. As you might expect, there are also several fan games about Kanye, including that silly Kanye's Twitter Account Simulator and the also-silly Kayne Zone: An Interactive Web Experience

It almost goes without saying that it is very, very easy to become cynical while contemplating what Kanye's next game will be like. When making this video, I had to fight back the urges to make "jokes" about pseudo celebrities, charging the stage at the Grammys, delusions of grandeur, and other mean-spirited, well-worn crabby territory.

Luckily for me (and for you, the viewer) I just happened to be talking to Will Brierly (Soda Drinker Pro, My Girl, Vivian Clark) about an exclusive reveal he has planned for PAX East on the day that the Kanye game news hit. I asked Will what he thought of the idea, and gosh darn it, I'm pretty sure that this man actually is a soda. He's about as sweet and bubbly as they get.

Thanks for talking to us Will, and I hope Kanye is listening. He'd do well to take your canoe idea and run with it.

Besiege brings its funny, sexual, weird medieval siege engines to Mac and Linux

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST

AT-AT by Poroh

I thought Besiege looked good based on the developer-made gifs and videos, but the game's community has elevated the title to new heights with its ingenious, often times so-wrong-they're-right medieval creations. YouTube and the Steam community page are full of this stuff.

Developer Spiderling Studios has opened up the Mac and Linux builds of Besiege on Steam Early Access. More creators, more insanity. Knowing my game-playing habits, it's in my best interest to hold off until the final version, as I tend to move on after I've had my fill and never return. But it's tempting to get in now while this is $6.99. I should just guilt-trip myself with my Steam backlog.

Shadow of Mordor's newest DLC has you wearing rings and fighting Sauron

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

Leagues of Uruks fell by your doing in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor -- just an unacceptable amount of dead orcs, really. Sure, that was gratifying in its own way, but a pile of orcs doesn't carry the same weight as someone whose title includes the words "Dark Lord."

The Bright Lord, the newest Shadow of Mordor add-on, affords players that opportunity. Playing as Celebrimbor, there's an eventual showdown with Lord Sauron himself. That's a tall task, so the fabled ring is there to put the power of invincibility in your corner.

All that lore comes at the cost of $10 for anyone playing Shadow of Mordor on PC, PS4, or Xbox One. The Bright Lord guarantees some of the telltale elements you think of when Lord of the Rings comes to mind. Or, you can keep stacking orc corpses for free. Just make sure not to fall in love with them.

Batman: Arkham Knight has an M rating

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST

The end of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, squeaked by with a PG-13, but it looks like Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy didn't have the same luck. Arkham Knight director Sefton Hill told IGN that the game was rated M for Mature by the ESRB.

According to Hill, like with the previous two games, Rocksteady went with the story it wanted to tell and just happened at an M rating. The team didn't aim for it, nor are they concerned about cutting down to a possibly more sales-friendly T for Teen.

"I'm not blind to the fact that [the M rating] does mean some fans will miss out," Hill said. "I don't want to be oblivious to that fact. It would have been wrong to water down the game and deliver a story we didn't believe in to keep the game 'mass market' or enable it for more people. We feel that's the wrong way to go about it. We said we love the story and we don't want to jeopardize that."

Personally, I like that Rocksteady stuck with its story, and I don't mind the fact that I'll have to have my mom buy the game for me.

Review: Aaru's Awakening

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST

Aaru's Awakening is an unrelenting challenge of a game, which places players in the world of Lumenox, a mystical land in a precarious state of balance between four deities who rule it, Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Night. Now that balance is being disrupted, as Dawn sends a faithful warrior, Aaru, to travel the domains of the other gods on a quest to remake the world.

Dark and twisted lands await.

Get your grid-based steampunkery on in Vaporum

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST

If you think that “steampunk dungeon crawler” sounds like Occam’s panty/brief-dropping sludge rock jug band, you would of course be correct. It also happens to be the genre type of FatBot Studio’s promising indie debut: the grid-based, first-person role-playing game Vaporum.

Picture the environments of Almost Human’s Legend of Grimrock reimagined in industrial Art Deco, then fill those gorgeous dungeons with creaking, whirring steam/dieselpunk enemy types and replace the familiar experience point/ability-based leveling system with a more streamlined, gear and gadget-oriented structure. That's essentially what the studio is shooting for.

As you can see in the latest pre-alpha teaser above, even at this early stage, Vaporum is striking. The lovingly crafted Art Deco aesthetic combined with a steampunk setting does wonders, in my mind, to help set it apart from other titles in the relatively underserved subgenre.

As I touched on briefly, Vaporum implements a "simplified character development system." While less complex than what we may be used to in typical RPG character progression, the studio says that by streamlining it in this way, it hopes to “make every player’s choice matter” without bogging you down in attribute tweaking and restrictive class-based abilities.

Grand Theft Auto V won't make it to PC until April 14

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 05:15 AM PST

It's the news we've been waiting to hear for months: four-player online heist missions will debut in Grand Theft Auto V on March 10, and the game's PC version will arrive April 14. There. Finally.

"Our apologies to PC gamers worldwide who have been counting down the days until the launch of the game," said the company, "but a bit more time is needed to ensure that the game is as polished as possible, and to make certain that both Heists and the GTA Online experience are ready to roll out on day one for PC." After all these delays, I'm expecting greatness. Have to.

Also, the next time Rockstar uses the word "soon" to tease upcoming details, donotbelieve.jpg.

Reunion tour: New Guitar Hero reportedly in development

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST

Don't adjust your (hot tub) time machine. You haven't traveled back to 2010; it just feels like it.

According to a report from Kotaku UK, Activision has a new Guitar Hero title in the works. It's said to be announced at E3, and released later this year. It's unclear which of Activision's studios are heading development, but it's most likely a west coast team. If this rumor proves true, it'll be the first installment in the Guitar Hero series since 2010's Warriors of Rock.

This iteration of Guitar Hero will be a stylistic departure of sorts from the look that's been characteristic of the faux-rock franchise over the years. Kotaku's two independent sources corroborate that this Guitar Hero -- which is coming to PS4 and Xbox One at the very least -- will have more realistic visuals, and "authentic" artists and crowds.

Unsurprisingly, it's said that Activision is also making new instrument peripherals to sell alongside the base game. It's unknown if these will be a mandatory purchase, or if the peripherals from Guitar Hero titles on legacy consoles will be compatible.

Of course, Kotaku's report comes on the heels of the wide-spread rumor that Harmonix has another Rock Band game in development. The rhythm genre was unsustainably bloated five years ago. It feels like we might be getting right back to that before new games even release.

Telltale's first original series is a TV show and videogame crossover

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST

Telltale Games has a propensity for surprising when it comes to revealing new projects. The news that it was creating a story-based Minecraft was so far out of left field, that it prompted us to wonder aloud what the next Telltale series could possibly be.

Turns out that it won't be anything we could've predicted, because the studio's making an original series finally. However, this won't be restricted to a single medium; it's what Telltale has dubbed a "super show," a crossover between videogames and television.

While the developer has stayed mum thus far on subject matter for the new project, it's talked about broad ideas for how the presentation will work. Each episode will contain "Telltale-style" narrative-focused gameplay, alongside set television sequences. But, these won't feel like two separate halves forming a whole. According to CEO Kevin Bruner, "It's not an interactive series with a show, or a TV show with a game, but a story integrated in a way that only Telltale can do."

Accompanying the reveal was the announcement that Lionsgate has made a "significant investment" in Telltale, and that the movie production company's CEO, Jon Feltheimer, will join Telltale's board of directors. It remains to be seen what kind of creative input Lionsgate will have over this new series and on future projects.

Telltale added one other notable name to its board of directors today: Unity Technologies CEO (and former EA boss) John Riccitiello. Regarding both Feltheimer and Riccitiello, Bruner commented "This is a time of explosive growth and opportunity for our company, and I'm thrilled to have these industry giants join us as we continue to define exceptional interactive scripted entertainment."

Review: Roundabout

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

For its first game, developer No Goblin seemingly subscribed to the K.I.S.S. school of thought: "Keep it simple, stupid." But, perhaps the studio misunderstood the acronym to mean "keep it simple and stupid." That'd explain how Roundabout revels in its own absurdity while revolving around a rock-solid gimmick: rotation.

Yes, the notion of motion is at the center of Roundabout. There is literally not a moment in gameplay where action is at a standstill. Even the most innocent, non-meaningful proceedings in Roundabout squarely feature its constantly spinning limousine -- a trademark that it rightfully relies heavily upon.

Archie's Mega Man and Sonic 'Worlds Unite' crossover will be bigger than we thought

Posted: 24 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST

This year, Sega and Capcom will join forces yet again in a Mega Man meets Sonic Archie comic crossover. This time is billed as 'Worlds Unite,' which will feature a host of characters from the aforementioned franchises in addition to Sonic Boom. But according to an image teased on IGN, there will be a lot more characters involved.

If you look closely you can see some outlines of iconic characters, and the head writers are saying this time around the worlds are "drastically different" -- which should make for an interesting crossover.

That free Super Smash Bros. Club Nintendo soundtrack is starting to ship

In case you were living under a rock when Super Smash Bros. had its dual 3DS and Wii U launch, Club Nintendo had a really cool promotion where if you registered both games, you'd get a nifty physical soundtrack for free. The window already closed on that offer, but if you happened to get both of them in, said soundtracks will begin shipping this week, according to multiple tipsters.

Make sure you check your email for Club Nintendo happenings to see if one is on the way, and if not, just sit tight throughout the week.

We are four months away from Persona 4: Dancing All Night's Japan release (and special edition Vita) and we've already seen and heard the lovely intro, so now what? Well, character trailers can be fun. Little tastes of the beloved music and uncanny exposure to unfamiliar voice actors for familiar characters. Mega Man X's Spark Mandrill theme on eight floppy drives sounds awesome

If you haven't visited MrSolidSnake745's YouTube channel before, he basically recreates various iconic songs by way of floppy drives -- it's just what he does, and he does it well. Just yesterday he posted one of my personal favorite Mega Man tunes, "Spark Mandrill," and it's glorious.

MrSolidSnake notes that Mega Man X was one of the first SNES games he ever had, and that he wanted to give tribute to Spark Mandrill's theme, which is his favorite next to "Armored Armadillo" and "Storm Eagle." All great choices -- what a great soundtrack.

Very Quick Tips: Resident Evil: Revelations 2's Raid Mode

Because of that it may take a little bit longer to acclimate, so here are some tips.

Sid Meier's Starships blasts off March 12 for $14.99

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 11:01 PM PST

Sid Meier's Starships warped in out of nowhere. We had never heard anything about it until just last month, and it turns out that it will be launching on iPad, Mac, and Windows early next month. March 12, to be exact!

It is retailing for $14.99, which sets the expectations for the small scope of the galaxy-spanning strategy title. I got to play a few rounds with the PC version, and you can check out my thoughts on it in the preview that just went up. Spoiler summary: I like it but I'm not sure it feels like a space game. I suppose I only have a couple weeks to see if playing a game to completion changes that.

The first three rounds of Sid Meier's Starships are not enough

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth released to mixed reactions. I loved how it took the took the classic gameplay to alien worlds, and I especially appreciated its underlying narrative about the future of the human race. Other long-time fans of the series saw it as derivative of Civ V, with too little added and too much stripped out.

Like it or not, one thing that Beyond Earth has done is to lay the foundation for Sid Meier's Starships. It continues the story of the human settlements on an alien planet, far enough into the future that they are able to travel between stars in less time than the initial exodus from Earth took. The result: a series of skirmishes for control of a very tiny galaxy. Sure, why not?

Look at this bushel of happiness on the PoPoLoCrois Farm Story Japanese cover

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 09:00 PM PST

Okay, I know no one cares that much about farm sims or things like that these days unless they're teeming with in-app purchases. Or PoPoLoCrois, for that matter. But for some reason, I really like both. I also really like the Japanese box art for PoPopLoCrois Farm Story. Enjoy it there below, and the above screen because we haven’t really gotten much out of the upcoming 3DS jaunt. It’s headed for release in Japan on June 18, but given the localizations of Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley, it’s not too far out of the realm of possibility that we could see this coming over too.

PoPoLoCrois is one of the games I consistently went to play on my PSP, but never could truly get into until an ice storm set in and I was forced to use either my DS or my softmodded PSP for entertainment. I’ve always loved Harvest Moon and games of that ilk though, so this looks right up my alley. Anyone else out there interested in giving it a go? Don’t be shy. We’re all friends here.

Seven minute Cyber Sleuth trailer is not your dad's Digimon

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 07:00 PM PST

People who watched Digimon in their youth are old enough to be parents. Damn millennial parents and their Digimon-playing children.

Some good music, a Summer Wars-looking digital world (yes, Hosoda, I know), a detailed Tokyo, some glam leather-vested glam rocker. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth looks alright with this lengthy showing. And sexier than I remember. But I mostly remember one season of anime, a PS1 game with a lot of poop eating, and a movie with a Barenaked Ladies song.

It's been. It's been. It's been. It's been. It's been.

I'd give it this Vita RPG a shot if it ever sees localization, though. The well-rendered models provide just enough nostalgia -- for the monsters I can remember, anyway. And I'd probably understand it more than I did Digimon World and not have a bunch of poop eating poop monsters.

Review: Resident Evil: Revelations 2: Episode 1

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 06:01 PM PST

Resident Evil is in a weird place. After the middling Resident Evil 6 and the public flogging of Operation Raccoon City, I'm sure Capcom got the message that it needed to go back to basics. It did just that with Revelations on the Nintendo 3DS, which was met with enough positivity to warrant a full-on set of console ports.

Then Capcom reached overwhelming amounts of success with Resident Evil HD, a game that's as basic as you get in terms of fundamental survivor horror. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 may be more action-oriented than some other entries, but it's a damn fine showing for the series.

Review: There Came an Echo

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST

Iridium Studios started out as a tiny developer with a humble Kickstarter for its rhythm role-playing game Sequence. It saw enough success that lead designer Jason Wishnov was able to fill out his team and spend more time taking on a much larger project.

Four years later, There Came an Echo is finally out. Though it plays nothing like the studio's previous project, the two do share some striking similarities. Both are built on a neat idea, both explore themes of morality in science fiction, and both are a little rough around the edges.
